1. TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.
I am Cabral Mercer, a tailoring conceptualist
based in London. As an artist, I have an
undeniable passion for style and design,
discovering my natural niche twenty years ago
when I first ventured into the colourful world of
fashion. I’ve always had a passion for creating
concepts, whether on- or off-stage, delivering
masterpieces that showcase the individuality
and authenticity of the wearer. In the past, I’ve
also expressed my creative energies through
dancing, rapping and even acting. As a designer,
I’m dedicated to my mission to handcraft the
finest bespoke jeans on the planet.
For three years, I worked with the worldrenowned
Savile Row as a bespoke jeans
tailor, serving as consultants for clients like
the Cad and the Dandy, Chittleborough &
Morgan, and Gieves and Hawkes. This was a
tremendous learning experience allowing me
to stamp my value in the fashion industry while
gaining my own confidence to rise on my own.
I realised my need to become independent,
knowing that I can only grow to a certain
height under someone else’s ceiling.
In these recent years, I’ve had the opportunity
of working in an exciting art exhibition called
Lost Tribes alongside the DJ and actor Goldie.
Lost Tribes taught me how to harness the
power of my character and understand my
worth as a creative individual. I’ve also worked
with Dynamo, the magician known for his TV
show Dynamo: Magician Impossible, as the
Executive Costume Designer for the amazing
project that launched the new Fiat 500X by Fiat
Chrysler Automobiles. In this project, Dynamo
performed an incredible illusion before a live
audience. It was very humbling and satisfying
to hear that I fulfilled my task, having been
told by his wife that Dynamo himself felt like
Michael Jackson in his outfit.
My intuition, being a creative sixth sense
perhaps, is one of my greatest assets: I believe
that if it feels right, then it is right—a personal
mantra that guides me in approaching every
opportunity that presents itself.
You may find more about me and my craft at
https://youtu.be/Jh5VxT91Wjs.
2. WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF
FASHION?
Fashion is an art that creates and recreates
itself, often cyclical or seasonal, responding to
the feelings and urges of the buying populace.
As for me, fashion changes like the weather—
like a particular look of clothing that transitions
into a revamped arrangement, only to return
a few seasons later in a different fabric and
silhouette, and oftentimes with a different
name or label. You can buy fashion—everyone
can—but to me, this is not enough to be truly
fashionable.
Style, in contrast with fashion, is the artistic
expression one is born with: ubiquitous,
unchanging and priceless. In another sense,
having authentic style is the true measure of
fashion. Interestingly, one can buy fashionable
labels and yet possess a cramped style. To
wear what makes you feel beautiful and
comfortable is the very essence of style, the
true mark of being fashionable.
3. HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN
FASHION?
I landed a career in fashion because of an expartner.
She, who was talented in dressmaking,
was ironically studying theatrical make-up at
that time. I watched her trace a piece of fabric
with chalk, creating a wearable garment out
of it. Fascinated, I thought that I could do
the same, deliberating internally until the
conceptual designer in me was born.
People come and go into your life for a reason.
I’m grateful for the memories she shared with
me, and I believe she delivered this special
gift to me: the realisation that I could be
something more.
4. WHAT IS THE BEST PART ABOUT
BEING A FASHION DESIGNER?
It brings me immense joy to design and
create unique garments that are markedly
different and special, pulling out a fresh
look from my own eclectic insights. I
treasure this gift of creativity, as I am also an
individual who celebrates individuality and
unconventionality.
5. WHAT INSPIRES YOUR DESIGNS?
I am a fan of diversity and originality seamlessly
sewn together. Various ideas, concepts and
artistic inspirations are interwoven in the
stories behind my designs. I take strong
insights from the subtle observations I see
every day—from a seemingly plain bag
panel, inconspicuous car seat piping, to the
soothing, stimulating textures of different
types of fabrics I lay my hands on. I can
visualise the ‘unseen’ designs around me,
bringing them to life.
People, in general, inspire me as well. I learn
from watching and listening to others, which
can be something I may have overheard
in a conversation, or the do’s and don’ts
most people abide by—somewhat an
amalgamation of ideas. I also tap inspiration
in my daily activities, especially when I’m on
the move—walking, commuting by train, or
sitting by the plane window. Movement and
open space are stimulants to get my creative
juices flowing. On the flip side, I meditate to
silence the ‘noise’ in my mind, particularly on
those days when I put my designs on trial to
get a fair verdict from my creative inner jury.
6. WHO ARE YOUR TARGET CUSTOMERS?
At present, my target customers are
individuals looking for unique, trendy items,
as well as those who require garments tailormade
to their specifications and preferences.
In many cases, clients would request a
particular garment that they have seen in
stores or boutiques to be custom-fitted to
their colour and style. I talk with my clients,
personally advising them in choosing the right
fabrics, appropriate cuts and complementary
accessories. Once the client and I agree on
the customisations, I proceed with my magic
to create the perfect piece.

7. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR
PERSONAL STYLE?
Cabral Mercer, as a personal style, is dressing
to the aura, mood, and vibration. I sport
tailored-fitted contours and bold, vibrant
colours. On special days, I like black-on-black
layered, polished looks. The romantic natural
in me flourishes when I do my colour tests,
experimenting on palettes and themes.
8. WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST ROOKIE
MISTAKE YOU MADE WHEN JUST STARTING
OUT?
Mistakes are only lessons learned. With that in
mind, one of the biggest lessons I’ve committed
to memory is making sure to put as much
emphasis and attention on managing your
business as you do on creating your designs
and unleashing your creativity. I learned the
hard way when I had to dissolve a company in
the past because of small errors. As a creative
individual, designing and bringing ideas to
life comes easy to me, but not so much on the
business side. I suggest that if you’re planning to
go the entrepreneurial route with your creative
talents, find business-minded individuals who
are as passionate as you are about your craft to
help you handle your business.
9. BIGGEST FASHION NO-NO?
My red flags are raised when I spot people
wearing garments and accessories of different
brands assembled as sloppy, flashy outfits. For
me, this is the biggest fashion no-no. Sporting
an assemblage of brands, whether high-end or
not, looking like an advert from top to toe, is
not cool. For example, it’s a major turnoff when
someone blatantly wears a Nike with an Adidas,
or say Gucci with a Louis Vuitton. You can get
away with accessories, be it bags, shoes, or
glasses, but if you are planning to wear different
brands together, make sure that there are no
visible logos to look more classy or refined.
10. IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING IN
THE FASHION INDUSTRY, WHAT WOULD IT
BE AND WHY?
Change is the only constant aspect of our
reality—so why the need to change a thing or
two? The world is forever evolving—and this
is what makes it exciting to venture out in the
world of fashion, and design original, diverse
creations for the future. I would love to see my
own brand to become world-renowned in the
line of luxury custom-made fashion clothing and
to have an appointment-only boutique in every
major city. Cabral Mercer of London—yes, I am
claiming it!
11. WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE GCC
MARKET?
Currently, I am collaborating with another brand
called SW3 who specialise in custom footwear.
As a guest designer for SW3, I am creating
a collection of ready-to-wear jackets to be
marketed in the GCC region. I am very excited
about the designs as we are planning to launch
in 2020. We are also discussing and planning
for a project in Saudi Arabia, with a dedicated
online platform to boot—so watch this space!

WEARING ANIMAL PRINTS:
A DEFINITIVE GUIDE TO
THE OFFICE VERSION
Animal prints are prized patterns of nature,
exuding the raw sensuality and boldness that
are often worn to symbolise daring and alluring
fashion statements. In the old times, monarchs
and tribal leaders donned animal coats with
unusual patterns to signify class and wealth. When
the Bohemian movement sparked the modern
curiosity on animal prints back in the 1970s, the
rage was evident and far too irresistible. Since
then, using animal prints in contemporary art and
fashion never lost its mainstream appeal.
liberating trends emphasising the equality
between genders. Animal prints, as a fashion
statement conventionally assigned to women,
presents a challenge to the male community.
Moreover, animal prints are usually worn casually
or in a party setting. Is there a way for both men
and women to sport the raw, dominating aura of
an animal print in an office setting without coming
off as too tacky and audacious? The answer, of
course, is a beaming yes!
While women are known as the more dominant
gender poised in popular fashion as the main
wearers of animal prints, men are also picking up
the vibe—in a cautious manner though—enough
not to raise a brow. But fashion is a genderless
master, and the designers of today are attuned
to the call for a much-needed diversity and
We’ve gathered the most noteworthy and
inspirational fashion ideas for both men and
women in this definitive guide in wearing animal
prints to work. You may want to take down notes
as you learn how to easily incorporate this allseason
trend into your daily grind without causing
alarm in the office corridor!

WEAR IT CLASSY—NOT TRASHY
Animal prints are associated with
positive and negative connotations in
popular media. These patterns convey
boldness and confidence. Many
people are simply content with seeing
animal prints in small items like scarves,
hair clips or printed bags. Today, we
are seeing more of this fashion trend
in main items of clothing, showing
these bold designs at work, parties,
and casual affairs in full-blown dresses,
coats, and even footwear—not
giving two pence about those raised
eyebrows.
There’s understated fun in being rebellious.
However, keeping your job means being
faithful to the employee handbook: follow
the mandatory dress code. Professionalism
is a must as responsible employees, so
dress appropriately while keeping your style
on fleek.
Animal prints worn alone as a single
garment may seem flashy, gaudy or cheap,
particularly if used as formal office attire.
Mixing and matching with different pieces
is a better styling strategy. Instead of going
solo with a single garment animal print,
go with two pieces instead— accentuating
your look without overdoing your style.
Pair an animal print shirt with plain pants
or even contrasting skirts to comply with
the office dress code. Shades ranging from
muted dark greens, neutrals, pastels, taupe,
mustard and similar shades effortlessly
complement animal prints.

THERE’S STRENGTH IN COLOUR COMBOS
If the classic colours of animal
prints may appear improper to be
worn as a work dress, opt to sport
the animal print in a different
shade. A change in palette
exudes a more sophisticated
vibe enough to stand out from
the crowd, while also toning
down the boldness associated
with the original colours of the
particular animal print.
However, take note that pairing
animal print dresses with
matching animal print shoes is a
fashion faux pas! Go for plainly
coloured, unassuming flats,
boots, heels or mules—whatever
suits your fancy—to ideally
complement a vibrant outfit.
LET’S GO BACK TO THE BASICS
Since animal prints could come off as loud, exotic fashion
statements, ‘over-styling’ with these natural patterns may
end up cramping your style. Unless you’re about to stride
the catwalk in a bohemian fashion show, wearing animal
prints from top to toe is sure to turn heads with incredulous
expressions. Highlighting or accentuating your style with
small garments or accessories is always a safe styling move
when using animal prints.
Wearing animal prints is much like wearing an expensive, heady
perfume: too much is almost always offensive to the observer. We
love the less is more approach: tread lightly on sporting animal
prints to preserve your refined vibe.

Animal print accessories are trendy items that add chic and versatility to
an otherwise austere fashion statement. Accessories like blazers, scarves,
watches, and belts are great ways to transition into this trend without being
the centre of attention.
Jewellery featuring animal prints are
also becoming popular and more widely
available. They add a subtle, chic style
to go perfectly with your work outfits. It’s
a brilliant way of spicing up your style
anew without crossing the borders of
your comfort zone.

ANIMAL PRINTS
FOR MEN
ANIMAL PRINTS IN MEN’S FASHION
While women’s clothing isles in boutiques and malls are teeming
with animal prints, the men’s fashion section is certainly scarce
in showcasing these trendy patterns in most of their collections.
Take leopard prints, for example. This distinctive pattern gives
off an intimidating vibe, perhaps signalling our latent instincts to
run away from predators as soon as we spot them in the savanna
grasses.
There’s no doubt animal prints have gone mainstream, and more
daring individuals are donning big statement pieces. While
adventurous men won’t mind going for these bold patterns, the
majority are overwhelmed with apprehension and disapproval.
With the right mixing and matching, men can sport these
patterns too—without looking ostentatious at the office.

ACCEPTING THE DARE
We’ve meticulously gathered a couple
of stylish statements that also border
on the safe side of responsible office
wear fashion. We recommend these
looks for men involved in the creative
industries, as well as for those who
prefer a business-casual appeal that is
suitable for everyday work.
Basic Styles using Animal Prints
Go for animal print blazers over
contrasting plain shirts and bottoms,
or simply pair an animal print tee over
plain, trimmed pants. Pants with animal
prints, on the other hand, are not
professional-looking and are therefore
not work-appropriate. Avoid mixing
other patterns or prints — a medley
of striking patterns and bold colours
might be a bit too much for work.
SMALL STEPS ARE ALWAYS BETTER
If you wish to add variety in your current style without entirely
ditching your personal tastes, start small by tweaking the small
details. Wear a tie with a subtle animal print in muted shades.
Donning a black suit layered over an animal print shirt retains an
elegant, masculine edge without being over the top.
Once again, we’re repeating this advice: opt for different shades
or hues instead of classic animal print palettes. The size of the
patterns, like the stripes or the dotted marks, has a significant
bearing on your overall style as well.

THE BARE NECESSITIES
Shoes are quotidian necessities, one
of those ideal accessories to try out
animal prints without the cringe factor.
Animal prints in belts and bags are also
commonplace, so don’t be afraid to
pick out the subtle ones to match your
attire. Be a cool dude with a fresh take
on style: pair these accessories with
monochrome or non-patterned outfits
to stay on the safe side.
Wallets, scarves, sunglasses,
backpacks, watches, and other
accessories could effortlessly
feature animal prints. These
accessories match formal or
elegant office suits, adding a
verve of youth and hinting a
M A K E U P
M A D N E S S
WITH
GLORIOUSLY DEWY:
THE ULTIMATE BEAUTY HACKS
FOR MOIST AND SUPPLE SKIN

Hey girl, have you been following your daily
facial regimen?
The ultimate rulebook of makeup and skincare
emphasises the importance of adequate skin
hydration. Before moving on to work the
magic of makeup, facial skin must be primed
to allow the cosmetics to sit perfectly.
• Refresh, Hydrate & Rebalance the Skin’s
PH Level - Toner with Glycolic Acid (5%),
Ginseng, Aloe Vera
• Skin Booster - Skin Brightening Essence
• Exfoliate Dead Skin Cells - Skin Brightening
Chemical Exfoliant
When I do my makeup for my MDB clients, I
begin with the indispensable step of verifying
the skin type and then move on to my extensive
skin prep process. This is what I absolutely
love being a beauty enthusiast: transforming
the skin before moving on to the glamour and
dazzle of makeup artistry.
How do we achieve gloriously dewy skin
that everyone is obsessing about? Start by
cleansing the skin, which, depending on the
amount of sebum on the outer layer of the
skin, may require a ‘double cleanse’. Usually,
I start off by washing with a cleansing prep
balm. Afterwards, I proceed with my cleansing
procedure with a water-based cleanser to
remove the extra layer of excess oils. I also
include steaming in the cleansing process. As
my favourite step in the cleansing process, my
clients are familiar with the label I refer to it:
Steamin’ n’ Beamin’! Note, however, that you
should never steam for more than ten minutes
but no less than five minutes, depending on
your skin type.
After cleansing, I move on to the so-called
‘Glow’ step: prepping your skin for tone,
texture, and elasticity. I want to achieve the
supple, bright glow before applying any
makeup products. I make minor adjustments
based on the skin type and skin requirements
for every client, although I specialise in
treating hyperpigmentation or discolouration.
I recommend these amazing products to
revitalise and achieve the effortless ‘glass
skin’ look:
• Hydration & Glow Sheet Mask 20
minutes - 2% Concentration of Alpha
Arbutin + Hyaluronic Acid
• Brightening & Pigmentation Treatment -
Niacinamide Serum
• Moisturiser, Antioxidant + Quick Youthful
Skin - Magical blend of Vitamins C and
E, plus Ferulic Acid
• Rose Gold Hydra-Gel Eye Patches for 40
minutes - Hyaluronic Acid for Hydration
& Glycerin for Lipids
Before removing the rose gold eye patches,
I massage the client’s face with a jade stone
facial roller. This allows the skin layer and
underlying facial muscles to relax, allowing
better penetration of skin-caring ingredients.
After removing the eye masks, I gently
press any excess serum into the skin area
surrounding the eyes. I never waste any of that
skin goodness! During this step, most of my
clients are relaxed, with some even napping
comfortably, because it feels pleasant to have
the skin prepped this way. I also apply a small
amount of collagen eye gel in the undereye
area to seal the tightening effects of the eye
patches. It’s a delectable skin treat—and your
eyes will thank you for it!
Now on to more good stuff: we want to lock
in all of these prepping ingredients with Skin
Glow Beauty Oils and Glow Mists. This is the
most rewarding step, as you can already see

the glowing and supple skin that has eventually emerged. I love taking the time
and effort to prep the skin because I get to witness the happiness and amazement
in my clients’ faces, even before getting to the final look. The skin, which is now
renewed, revived and brightened, is pristine as a blank canvas ready for the touch
of art and colour of makeup!
Following my skin prep process will definitely shorten the makeup application process.
Trust me: supple and healthy skin trumps even the most intricate and laborious
makeup applied on sallow, unprepped skin. If you have any questions, please feel
free to book my one-on-one Skin Prep Course at melanindeepbeauty.com.
FABULOUS
FABULOUS DIY EYE MASKS
& QUICK TIPS TO VANISH DARK UNDER-EYE CIRCLES
Going to bed early and fulfilling the doctor’s recommended
eight hours of sleep might pose as the only solution to nip
dark circles in the bud. But unfortunately, this isn’t as simple
as it sounds. Regardless of how meticulous you are in
following a good diet, getting a full night’s sleep, or drinking
twelve glasses of water a day—many factors play a huge
role in causing dark under-eye circles. Genetics, ageing,
sun exposure, allergies and skin pigmentation, as well as
lifestyle factors such as drinking, smoking and prolonged
exposure to mobile phones, TVs and laptop screens, may
cause darkening of the under-eye area and contribute to
the accumulation of water and fats in the orbital area.
Not all high-tech procedures, beauty products, or skincare
recipes are going to work in your favour. Fortunately, trying
a select few may help in your case. We’re talking about
DIY beauty recipes which are recommended to lighten your
dark circles with patience and regularity.
The catch is to stick with using these recipes on a regular
basis. You’ll definitely see subtle results in the first attempt.
With continued usage, the results will be more pronounced,
making your dark circles less visible with time.

1. THE VIRAL TURMERIC EYE MASK
Turmeric is one of the healthiest
spices to add in your diet and beauty
regimen due to its main chemical
compound called curcumin, which
has been scientifically studied for
its alleged effects in alleviating
symptoms of cancer, Alzheimer’s
disease, and heart problems. Turmeric
also contains anti-inflammatory and
antioxidant properties that may
help in reducing the appearance of
inflamed eye bags. Moreover, it works
as a pigment corrector, owing to its
bright yellowish hue, which visibly
brightens dark circles.
This recipe uses buttermilk—a
great source of calcium, potassium,
riboflavin, Vitamin B12, and lactic
acid, which is a mild beta-hydroxy
acid that helps in sloughing off dead
skin cells.
INGREDIENTS
1. Turmeric Powder, 1 tablespoon
2. Organic Buttermilk, 1 tablespoon
3. A small mixing bowl
4. A small spatula to mix
METHOD FOR THE PASTE MIXTURE:
Combine the ingredients in a small bowl, mixing evenly
with the spatula to achieve the consistency of a smooth
paste.
APPLICATION
Apply the paste mixture under your eyes like an eye
gel patch with the help of a small brush or a clean
eyeshadow brush. Let the mixture sit for 15 minutes,
or until it’s dry. Rinse the dried paste with water or use
a damp washcloth to remove the traces of the mixture
in your under-eye area. You’ll immediately notice the
remarkable decrease in pigmentation in the orbital area,
especially under the eyes. Plus, this recipe doesn’t cause
irritation, sensitivity or redness. For safety purposes, a
patch test is recommended.

2. THE ROSE AND CUCUMBER EYE MASK
The accumulation of constricted
blood vessels under your eyes
contributes to the appearance of
puffy, swollen eyes. Cucumber, a
centuries-old trick to soothe the
eyes, reduces the inflammation of
these blood vessels due to this fruit’s
cool and soothing properties.
Rosewater, on the other hand,
prevents swelling and irritation—
thanks to its antioxidant and antiinflammatory
agents present in rose
essential oil and hydroalcoholic
extract. It also evens out the
appearance of harsh bluish or purple
veins under the eyes, contributing to
overall skin lightening.
INGREDIENTS
3. Cotton Rounds
1. Rosewater, 1 oz 4. Cucumber Half
2. Blender
5. A small bowl
METHOD FOR THE SOAKED MIXTURE:
Add cucumber and rose water in a blender and
blend to form a liquid. Transfer the mixture to a
bowl. Cut your cotton rounds in the shape of an eye
gel patch—or a half-moon shape—and soak them in
the mixture. Squeeze out the excess and re-soak for
better absorption. Store the soaked cotton pads in a
plastic zip-lock bag in the freezer for later use.
APPLICATION
Take out two frozen pads, letting them slightly thaw.
Place the cold pads in the undereye areas near the
bottom lash line, allowing them to sit for 10 - 15 minutes.
The coolness will reduce the puffiness and lighten the
dark circles. Gently tap the serum-like residue from the
pads with your ring fingers, spreading the liquid in your
eye area and ensuring that the surrounding skin tissues
will not be strained with pressure.

3. THE POTATO & MINT EYE MASK
It seems that our oil glands are absent where
we need them the most. The skin beneath
the eyes, including the eyelids, are thinner
than most areas of the face and have
fewer oil glands, which contribute to loss of
elasticity and hydration. For this reason, the
eye regions most often show early signs of
ageing than the rest of the facial features. To
make up for the lack of oil glands, you can try
out this potato and mint eye mask.
Potato is rich in soothing enzymes and
Vitamin C, which is scientifically proven to
improve pigmentation and combat skin
dullness. Potato also contains starch and
other beneficial nutrients, keeping the
fragile skin around the eyes moisturised
and nourished. The presence of catechol,
a beneficial enzyme found in potatoes, also
decreases the appearance of dark under-eye
regions. On the other hand, mint has wellknown
soothing and cooling properties,
reducing inflammation of eye bags and
expelling dryness.
INGREDIENTS
1. Mint Leaves, 5 to 6 pieces
2. Potato, 1 large piece
3. Cotton Pads, 10 to 15 pads
4. Blender
5. A small bowl
6. Water, as needed
METHOD FOR THE ‘MASK’:
Peel off the potato skin, and cut the flesh into cubes. Blend
the mint leaves and potato cubes until liquefied. Use water
as needed to achieve a thin consistency.
Transfer the mixture into a bowl and soak the cotton pads.
Gently squeeze the excess liquid. Place the cotton pads in a
ziplock bag, keeping adequate distance between the pads
to prevent from adhering with the other pads. Store in the
freezer for later use, placing the bag flatly against a surface.
APPLICATION
Take two moist cotton pads out of the bag, tapping
off the excess juice. Pop them over your eyes for 15
- 20 minutes. Do this whenever you feel the need to
rejuvenate your eyes.

QUICK TIPS
Too busy to try these DIY
concoctions?
We have gathered these additional
tips for you:
• Apply a light amount of almond
oil and honey beneath your eyes
before sleeping. Almond oil and
honey are effective hydrating
agents that can help in minimising
stubborn eye shadows.
• Press cool tea bags of any kind
(preferably refrigerated or chilled)
in the morning for ten minutes
to de-puff your eyes and reduce
inflammation.
• Massage coconut oil in the undereye
region every day to reduce dark
eye circles and eye bags overtime.
These DIY fixes are not only relatively inexpensive but fantastic for your
overall under-eye health as well. Incorporate them into your daily skincare
routine and thank us later!

JOY AJLOUNY
CO-FOUNDER OF FETCHR

1. TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.
My name is Joy Ajlouny, a seasoned
businesswoman and passionate entrepreneur
currently based in Dubai. I’m one of the
founders of Fetchr, a logistics company aiming
to solve the problem of the lack of addresses
in emerging markets. Today, Fetchr is one of
the leading shipment and delivery service
providers in the Middle East. In 2012, I also
founded Bonfaire, an e-commerce platform for
undiscovered brands, connecting designers
with consumers across the globe.
I’ve always been an entrepreneur—it’s in my
DNA. I know myself to be a creative thinker,
and as people say, creativity comes with being
kooky. I’m also great at telling stories, and
that speaks volumes about my marketing style
because marketing is all about storytelling.
I prefer the unconventional, as the best
innovations and exciting ventures are born
when we do things out of the ordinary. Being
a risk-seeker rather than averse to uncertainty
has brought me to where I am now. Fortune
favours the brave, as they say, and I truly
believe that.
2. HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN
BUSINESS?
At the age of ten, I had my own lemonade
stand just outside the house. That’s how I
started doing business: selling lemonade as a
young entrepreneur full of dreams and creative
energy. Back then, I was thinking of ways to
turn my little business around. I had a eureka
moment that worked: I used organic sugar and
found a way to source all-natural water with
no harsh aftertaste, and I made sure that my
customers knew about this. As a result, I made
my product very desirable to more customers.
At a young age, it was an eye-opener for me.
I was born to be an entrepreneur with a vision.
Even now, this fact about me still rings true:
I find ways to improve my business in a way
that’s also beneficial to my customers.
3. YOU SEEM TO HAVE A KEEN
INTEREST IN STARTUPS, WHY IS THAT?
I love startups because I’m an executor. For
me, there are three words to say in a business
about to take flight: execute, execute, execute.
Startups are all about wonderful plans and
goals. Still, without the steadfast commitment
to bring about these endeavours, failure is
most often the bitter result.
I was born a non-conformist, so I’d rather lead
than follow the usual crowd. This is why I love
the idea of startups with disruptive business
models. Disruption is the art of creating new
waves in a turbulent market and changing the
direction of the tides of consumer demand.
For a startup to effectively disrupt a market,
you have to answer the difficult questions:
Can we do it better? Does it always have to be
this way? What can I do to make a difference?
Deviating from the status quo is challenging,
and to me, this is exciting!
4. TELL US ABOUT THE STARTUPS
THAT YOU’VE WORKED WITH AND
WHERE THEY ARE NOW.
I started off my career with Bonfaire, a
Silicon Valley startup I founded in 2012,
successfully raising over $2.4 million in total
funding. Bonfaire is an e-commerce platform
for undiscovered brands. In 2013, it was
subsequently acquired by Moda Operandi,
the leading platform for fashion discovery in
the world.
Even after raising capital for Bonfaire in April
and September of 2012, that year did not
end without more exciting surprises. I was in
touch with entrepreneurs and investors from
the Middle East in Silicon Valley. I met Idriss Al
Rifai, a fellow entrepreneur with a passion for
disruptive business ideas like me.
Idriss was pitching an innovative business
idea aiming to solve the logistical problem of
delivering in regions with no formal addresses.
I immediately loved his proposition because
I was well-acquainted with the situation he
wants to solve. In the previous company I
worked for, part of the marketing strategy
I helped in developing was to ship in Russia
and the Middle East. I didn’t know that there
were problems with the addresses until the
boxes started coming back to us. Customers
are buying online and through their mobile

phones, but they couldn’t be reached in their
homes. I know that this is a ubiquitous problem
in the Middle East that is worth solving.
Most people who live in the Western world are
not aware that half of the world’s population
do not have addresses. Some of these regions
with no specified or identifiable addresses are
located in India, Middle East, South America
and Brazil. Imagine the logistical difficulties of
doing business without an address. Language
barriers complicate this problem, as with the
case when the sender cannot communicate
effectively because of difficulties speaking in
English. I made up my mind, certain of what I
had to do next.
I went up to Idriss and said, “Love, love this
idea. I had experienced it.” I asked him if
he was looking for a business partner, and
he replied in the affirmative. He expressed
the difficulty of entrepreneurs coming from
the Middle East in raising funding in Silicon
Valley. Coming from Silicon Valley with a track
record and a network of investors, I knew I
had to partner with Idriss to build a fantastic
company. Thus, Fetchr was born in November
of 2012. In 2015, we raised $11 million, and
the company moved to Dubai.
I literally packed two suitcases and stepped
foot in this melting pot of business and
culture in the UAE. I moved into a fullyfurnished,
70-sqm rental apartment, and six
years later, I’m still here. Altogether in my
career I’ve raised almost $100 million, which
I’m very proud of. According to Fortune, just
2.7 percent of venture capital funding was
invested in women-led businesses in 2017.
I’ve done this twice, successfully raising
capital for disruptive startups.
Fetchr has gone a long way since its inception.
With over 5,000 employees, offices in Saudi
Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, Oman, and Bahrain;
the company continually growing and
innovating. Perhaps one of our greatest
successes as a company is Fetchr being the
first Middle Eastern startup to acquire earlystage
funding from a major US venture capital
firm. We opened the door for other investors
and startups to see investment opportunities
in the Middle East. We’re always proud of
this fact.

5. YOU HAVE RAISED SIGNIFICANT
AMOUNTS OF MONEY FOR STARTUPS.
WHAT’S THE SECRET TO RAISING
FUNDS FOR STARTUPS?
You have to be an entrepreneur, an avid risktaker
willing to risk everything for your beliefs
and aspirations. This attitude towards risk
might be too much for the average person to
handle, so it’s fair to accept that risk-taking is
not for everybody. Most people like to play
it safe. If you have a fear of rejection, then
being an entrepreneur might not be the best
path for you.
As a person, I don’t really care much about
what others think of me. You can slam the
door in my face any number of times. I just
keep coming back. In modern dating, they
call it having a ‘stalker’ behaviour. You know,
it actually works really well in business. My
secret is my quality of being unwavering:
being relentless despite the rejections and
difficulties which has propelled me to heights
I never thought were possible.
6. AFTER ALL THESE YEARS IN
BUSINESS, WHAT KEEPS YOU GOING?
I love putting goals on the table. It feeds
my self-esteem to accomplish them one by
one, doing my best every time with no holds
barred. When you can make things happen,
you experience a sense of accomplishment
that nobody can take away from you. It’s
the so-called flow—when your mind, heart,
determination, drive and passion coalesce
together to create achievements. My
God, nothing feels better than that—
and it’s not about the money: it’s
about proving to yourself that
if you can set your mind on
a goal, everything is possible. It feels like an
adrenaline rush of self-esteem. This is what
keeps me going.
7. WHAT IS YOUR LATEST VENTURE?
What’s next? I’m in stealth mode. I’m
definitely going to be doing something new,
but I’m not discussing it. I find it wise not
to discuss a potential venture or plan in a
startup until all the money is in the bank—
or as the Americans say—when all the I’s are
dotted, and the t’s are crossed. But yes, i’m
absolutely going to continue the spirit of
innovation in my next endeavour.
8. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE
TO SOMEONE WANTING TO START A
BUSINESS?
Fair warning: prepare to make a lot of
sacrifices. Working for a startup will definitely
take almost all of your waking hours away from
your personal and family life. It is challenging
and exhausting, almost as if it is your only life.
Expect that relationships with your family and
friends will suffer to some degree.
At the pre-operating phase until its
operational infancy, a startup is not profitable.
It’s a hard, constant chase for the money. I do
agree with Reid Hoffman, the co-founder and
executive chairman of LinkedIn, who said that
building a startup is akin to being thrown off
a cliff and building an aeroplane on the way
down. Nine out of ten startups fail, and this
is the sheer, bitter reality. Startups deal with
this unwavering pressure to resist the crash,
making sure to figure out a way to climb and
take flight to success.

9. WHAT ARE THE BUSINESSES OF
THE FUTURE?
Everyone is practically talking about
blockchain technology and quantum
computing. Blockchain, for me, is still a big
mystery—but what I understand is that due
to its high-level cryptography, it might be
the future of finance. Blockchain technology
enables information stored digitally to be
recorded and made publicly viewable. Still,
at the same time, it provides foolproof
security by making this information stored
in ‘blocks’ practically uneditable, or in other
words, almost impossible to hack.
Google recently announced that it made a
leap in artificial intelligence and quantum
computing. According to them, they have
developed a quantum processor that was
able to perform a task in three minutes that
would take the best supercomputer in the
world 10,000 years to complete! It sounds
like a story out of a science fiction novel, but
this is happening. Technologies or businesses
built on quantum computing has to be one
of the biggest disruptors of the future.
I also think that any major disruption or gamechanging
innovations in a conventional
or ‘old-school’ industry is also going to
cut it. Take the medical field, for example.
Replacing human staff or personnel with
robots to accomplish tasks that require
precision is cutting-edge practice. Imagine
having a robotic needle to extract your
blood samples in just a few seconds with
no pain at all, precisely sensing the vein in
your arm. This is not only efficient in the
operational sense but may also improve the
patient experience by avoiding the need to
undergo repetitive blood extraction from an
inexperienced nurse.
10. WHAT’S YOUR IDEA OF
SUCCESS?
Spiritually, emotionally or financially—there
is only one ideal state where we all strive
to be. Success is about looking at yourself
in the mirror and liking what you see. My
idea of success is having self-respect and
dignity, beholding your image in the mirror
with pride and confidence.
You can have all the money in the world
and loathe yourself silently. The key, then,
is to embrace the totality of your being and
find where the peace inside you reside.
This is the concept of gratitude: the state
of harmony between your heart and mind.
We have to accept certain realities in our
lives as well—that there is no such thing
as eternal happiness. As Thomas Jefferson
puts it: Nobody is better than you and
remember, you are better than nobody.
I feel blessed in my life because I am
thankful for the experiences I’ve had. I
am also immensely grateful to the people
around me who have brought me to where
I am now. When you are grateful, the road
to happiness opens its gates for you. That’s
where you’re going to find the true key to
happiness and success: contentment.
11. COMPLETE THIS QUOTE:
“LUCK IS ______________.”
Luck is self-created energy that defines
your reality.
I remember one of Albert Einstein’s famous
quotes: “Everything is energy and that’s all
there is to it. Match the frequency of the
reality you want, and you cannot help but
get that reality. It can be no other way.”
I do believe in luck as an energy with
the potential to define your reality.
Consequently, I believe in making your own
luck with the combination of your passion
and determination. When I get up in the
morning, I think of the great things that are
going to happen. Positive thoughts attract
positive energy. My intuition tells me that
this mindset is not simply metaphysical, but
also founded in actual science that we may
not yet understand as of now.

KRIS FADE

1. TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF
My name is Kris Fade. I am an Australian-Lebanese radio host. I moved
to Dubai eleven years ago from Sydney, Australia to help start a little
radio station called Virgin Radio. Now, every single weekday morning,
I host the morning show called The Kris Fade Show with Priti Malik and
Big Rossi. It is the number one radio show across the country—which
we’re super happy about.
I have two beautiful daughters named Noushie and Kikki, age 10 and 8.
I also run a little snacks business called Fade Fit Kids—my side hustle,
which I’m loving, providing the healthiest snack option for kids.

2. HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN MEDIA?
Back in Sydney, I did a bunch of jobs that I wasn’t
interested in. I used to be a barista, I washed cars,
and I even started my own cleaning company. None of
these really stuck with me. Somehow, I landed a parttime
radio job where I helped in cleaning out the prize
cupboard. The next thing I know, I realised I love this
radio thing. I watched the presenters do it and started to
understand what radio was all about. That’s how I really
got into the whole radio business.
3. HOW HAS YOUR LIFE CHANGED SINCE
LIVING IN DUBAI?
Since I moved to Dubai, my life has changed dramatically.
I gained a hell of a lot of experience. I’ve had two
babies, and becoming a father meant carrying huge
responsibilities. When I first moved to Dubai, I only had
around AED 10,000 in my pocket, and I knew absolutely
no one. Thankfully, eleven years later, I have a lot more
money now, and I came to meet amazing and diverse
people. Now, I’ve got a fairly high profile here in this
country, so wherever go, I’m always getting stopped—
which I absolutely love. Life’s fantastic.
4. WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?
Oh man, I motivate myself, yes, but this might sound
weird: I don’t really like to push myself that hard. I feel
like, as humans, we’re really hard on ourselves—we
are our own worst critics. But I like to make sure that
I give myself an appreciative pat on the back when I
accomplish something good. When I finish a gym
routine for the day, I tell myself, ‘Good job, Kris’, ‘Great
job, you did it.’ And I think that’s really important. If
you can motivate yourself, guess what? You motivate
others.
5. WHAT WOULD YOU TELL YOUR 20-YEAR-
OLD SELF?
I’m only 21—so I’m not sure! [laughing] Patience is really
important. I’ve got the word ‘patience’ tattooed across
my left shoulder, and I believe in doing things with
patience. Things will bear fruit in time, and for a reason.
Focus on “yourself” and not on “you”. Something that
I live by as well: focus on yourself, and then they’ll focus
on you. Put yourself first, trust the process, and it will
happen. But you’ve got to work hard. I would tell my
20-year-old self: just keep going.

6. TELL US ABOUT YOUR VENTURES
OUTSIDE OF MEDIA.
I have a few ventures going on. The biggest
one is Fade Fit Kids, which is the healthiest
snack option for kids. We’re in over 400
stores and locations across the UAE. We’re
expanding globally, which is fantastic. We
have three amazing flavours, solely made
from dates. I started the business with my
daughters Noushie and Kikki. One is the
financial controller, and the other one is the
general manager [laughs]. We’re having a
lot of fun doing it. Fade Fit Kids is located
in some of the big names like Carrefour,
Zoom and Amazon—and there’s more to
come. Fade Fit Kids will also launch more
snacks—including the first sugar-free
gummy multivitamins for kids, and this
one’s dropping very, very soon!
7. WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO,
OR DO DIFFERENTLY FOR YOUR
DAUGHTERS TO WHAT YOUR
PARENTS DID FOR YOU?
My upbringing was amazing because my
parents are fantastic. In raising my kids, I do
it differently in some ways. For example, I
want to make sure that the girls can make
their own decisions. Most of the time, I
don’t tell them what they can and
cannot do. I let them know
what’s probably right and
wrong, and then I’ll let
them make that decision.
Growing up, my parents—
especially my father—told
us that if we get tattoos,
we’re not staying in the
house. Interestingly enough,
guess what we did? As soon
as my siblings and I moved out,
we all got tattoos. It’s like telling
someone what food to eat or not
to—you can’t have this, you can’t
have that. What do people do when
they’re out of sight? Well, they eat
all the food they’re told not to eat. So
what I do with raising my girls is making
sure that I give them the choice. I think
giving them the power to make decisions is
really important.
8. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU
GIVE TO SOMEONE WHO WANTS
TO GIVE UP THEIR 9-5 TO FOLLOW A
PASSION?
Listen—if you’re stuck in the 9 to 5 and you
hate it, get a side hustle. Start an online
business: what you can do right now on
the Internet and with the power of your
phone is fantastic—you can start earning
on your own. I’ve done it numerous times,
and it worked. You can start small, making
small amounts of money at first, but your
online business can expand very quickly.
So after you’re finished with your 9 to 5,
you’re coming home to work on your own
business. You may also do your side hustle
on your lunch break—but don’t tell the boss
you’re doing it while working, of course
[smiles]. Start something that you love.
Once you start doing something that you
love, believe me—you’ll begin to enjoy life
a lot more.
9. WHAT’S THAT ONE QUOTE
THAT YOU LIVE BY?
“They tried to bury me. They didn’t
know I was a seed.”
I have this quote tattooed on
the right side of my chest. This
quote reminds me that you
can be pushed deep down
into the ground. People
will tell you things that you
don’t want to hear: they can
make you feel horrible and
ashamed of yourself. But
guess what—if you’re a seed,
what you’ll eventually do under
that darkness is to take roots and
find a way to the sunlight above.
Growth is inevitable. And that’s
something that I always commit to
memory, an ideal I’ve always lived by.

10. AND FOR THOSE WHO
LIVE UNDER A ROCK, WHERE
DO WE FIND KRIS FADE?
You’ll find me, Kris Fade, every
weekday morning from 6 to 10 on
104.4 Virgin Radio — or if you’re in
Australia, you can catch me on the
weekends on Kiss FM. You’ll also
likely to find me in a gym somewhere
around the city, and make you grab
our snacks, Fade Fit Kids. Order
them now at fadefit.com, Amazon,
Carrefour, Zoom, Tim Hortons and
a bunch of other amazing locations.
Make sure to check out KidZania at
the Dubai Mall and Yas Mall because
guess what? We’ve got them there!

LIFESTYLE
THE POWER OF ALIGNING
YOUR THOUGHTS AND ACTIONS
You’ve probably met a person who is a walking
irony—someone who does not practise what he or
she preaches, as the cliché goes. While the habit of
not aligning our thoughts and actions may seem like
a natural human aspect that cannot be helped, this
attitude hinders in the way of our personal growth,
and ultimately, success itself.
Say, you want to be promoted this year. Are you
working towards this goal through concrete,
attainable milestones? If you stick with your old habits
and shun the commitment on showing up promptly
on meetings, upholding company rules or attending
important seminars, what is going to change?
Almost every one of us has been there and done
that, oftentimes reneging on our own words—even
preaching what our children should or should not do
when we ourselves are doing the opposite. When
gearing up for success, discipline and resilience are
your most formidable assets. Setting a goal only
lights the fire of the dream. What you want to sustain
is the fuel that lights the fire on your way to success.
Many people rely on the principles of the so-called
‘law of attraction’—the belief that positive thoughts
‘attract’ positive experiences, and vice versa.
While many find this idea, an inspiring way to lead
meaningful lives, the substance of thoughts alone—
without the force of action—cannot bring about a
tangible consequence. Successful people did not
rely on their thoughts alone to achieve what they
want: they worked hard to get to the pinnacle of
their dreams.

THE TRUE MEASURE OF SUCCESS
Success is a relative experience: it’s not the
same highway that everyone takes. Going
where you want to be may require you
to build the road for yourself when there
is none. It is the same thing with finding
where you belong: success, in essence,
is being where you are at your most
contented disposition.
Success is more about the fulfilment that
only you can define for yourself, and less
about financial and worldly gains. For
some, success is about wealth-building
and professional advancement. The rest
of us, on the other hand, dream about
touching or changing other people’s lives
for the better.
Take the story of Steve Jobs. Jobs is
described by many as a visionary, perhaps
one of the greatest innovators the modern
world has seen. He was relentless in his
goals, even when others were convinced that
the feats he had in mind were impossible.
Breaking boundaries and exceeding
expectations, Jobs introduced the touch
technology, and the rest is history. His
success wasn’t achieved overnight—years
of hard work and sleepless nights made
his story an astounding reality. Steve Jobs,
like other successful figures and visionaries,
aligned their thoughts with their actions.
REALISTIC THOUGHTS FIRST
For many of us, we think that almost
every thought that crosses our minds are
realistic. However, what we experience
now independent of other factors that we
cannot possibly control is a result of our
own thought processes. The judgments
and rationalisations we make directly
affect the ‘now’ and the future. Most
situations that we experience are the
direct consequences of decisions we’ve
made: quitting a job because of poor
work performance, being indebted as a
result of spontaneous shopping sprees,
and so on—almost everyone has their own
relatable stories to share.
The quality of our decisions is highly
dependent on our own perception of
the world—which boils down to having
thought processes that are anchored in
reality. How then do we align the distorted
thoughts in our minds for us to grow as
wiser individuals?
1. CHALLENGE YOUR BELIEFS
AND ASSUMPTIONS. Take the time
to reflect on your deep-seated beliefs,
principles and assumptions about life. For
example, what is the ideal work for you?
Do you like the concept of working from 9
to 5, doing the minimum requirements and
performing just to keep the job? If this is
your idea of the ‘perfect’ work, then maybe
you have to stop wondering why you’re not
getting a career advancement. Assuming
that ‘doing the minimum is enough’ will
not get you to a position that will require
you to do more than what is expected. In
this example, we see that the assumption
about work itself hinders one from being
promoted. Use this flow of reasoning to
assess all the other assumptions you have
and identify any misguided or distorted
notions about life in general.
2. DEVELOP AN AWARENESS
OF SPONTANEOUS THOUGHTS.
By being your own ‘thought police’,
you’re able to stop the resulting train of
thinking from automatic or instinctive
thoughts that are not realistic or are
simply born from strong emotions. When
you catch yourself saying—I hate this
job, I hate being here, I don’t like my
boss—flag these thoughts immediately:
isolating them to get to the reason you
had them in the first place. Were you
simply stressed or angry at the moment?
You will likely quit your job sooner and
abandon your career goals when you
think that you hate your job every minute
of the working day. Learn to reframe the
situation to control your thoughts. Having
these automatic thoughts influences your
resulting reaction and behaviour, affecting
the decisions you make.

3. REEVALUATE A SITUATION FROM
A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE. We are used
to assessing a situation from our points of view.
Reacting or deciding based entirely on the weight
of own judgments, especially when we are new to
certain experiences, may not be the wisest thing to
do. Putting our feet in the shoes of other people
and seeing situations from their perspectives may
help us in making better decisions.
4. AVOID ALL-OR-NOTHING THINKING.
This is also known as the black-and-white
approach—a case of over-generalisation. Viewing
success as simply a pass-or-fail experience
hinders your capacity for growth. People who are
perfectionists are almost always guilty of overgeneralising,
treating circumstances as mere
variations of success and failure, and nothing
in between. The same goes for individuals who
always blame themselves, rather than attributing
the reasons to other likely factors. Say, you want
to learn how to dance, and enjoy watching others
dance. Assuming at the outset that you can never
dance, however, will not get you anywhere. If you
reframe this thinking by saying—I will learn how to
dance even though I will not be good at it at first—
you will find the activity attainable with patience
and dedication. To effectively align your thoughts
with your actions, replace your all-or-nothing
beliefs or assumptions with a more grounded
approach, leaving room for improvement and new
experiences.
5. STOP IDEALISING YOUR REALITY.
Focus on the way things are, rather than how you
think they should be. Before we even try to steer a
different direction in our lives, we should accept the
way things are now. Think of it this way: suppose
you want to get from Point A to Point B. Getting to
Point B requires your knowledge of Point A for you
to assess the direction and route you’re going to
take. It is useless to think that you’re supposed to
be in Point C, which may be an ideal location going
to Point B, when in fact you are in Point A. The
same logic applies in making real-life decisions.
If we’re hoping to achieve something, accept the
reality first to be able to develop a concrete plan
that fit the circumstances you’re in.
HOW TO ALIGN YOUR THOUGHTS AND
ACTIONS FOR SUCCESS
Developing an emotionally-stable thought process
is essential in achieving healthier thinking. Our
spontaneous perceptions and thoughts about our
personal circumstances influence our emotional
and behavioural reactions. When emotions are out
of sync with the mind, the perception of things,
as well as our ability to understand situations

and make decisions, become
dysfunctional—often resulting in a
distorted interpretation of reality.
By learning to identify and evaluate
the thoughts arising spontaneously
or out of wishful imaginations,
we can start reframing the world
as we perceive it so we may
better align it with the reality. A
framework of beliefs and principles
that are founded in reality rather
than whimsical idealisations forge
concrete, realisable goals.
Thus, aligning your thoughts with
your actions commence with
having realistic thoughts that match
attainable or doable actions.
Secondly, outline a concrete plan
with activities that are doable within
the limits or constraints of your time,
resources, skills and environment.
These may range from the minute
details of your daily work, weekly
goals and annual resolutions. Starting
small and accomplishing things little
by little is more than enough than
having to strive with futility in a single
activity that you mistakenly think is
going to work overnight. The path
to success is a series of small steps
taken by one foot at a time, rather
than a single impossible leap using
all your strength and will.
Your thoughts are powerful, which
is why you need to align them with
your actions to achieve what you
want in your life. Start with making
small changes in the way you
process your thoughts, progressing
until you’ve attained awareness of
your own consciousness. Achieve
the life that you want tomorrow
by working towards it—starting
today!

BACK TO
BASICS:
PRACTICAL WAYS TO IMPROVE YOURSELF

You’re responsible for your own
progress. What and where you are
today are the results of your past and
present actions. If you want to achieve
great results from your efforts, work
on yourself first. Keep improving—
after all; you’re a work in progress.
By having a so-called growth
mindset, you will be able to unlock
your potential to its full capacity.
Whenever you think you’re already
good at something, you can always
be better. In pursuit of constant selfimprovement,
successful people
practise these nine basic habits that
you can accomplish with patience and
dedication.
and mental tasks. Highly effective
people know very well that they
should invest in their own health and
wellness to be able to do more—and
you should too.
PLANNING AND ORGANISING
ACTIVITIES
Successful people lead meaningful
lives that are built on structured
schedules and organised workflows.
Proper planning enables them to
prioritise and compartmentalise
goals and activities by assessing
their necessity, urgency and required
resources of the tasks they need to
accomplish.
READING BOOKS REGULARLY
According to a study, CEOs of
Fortune 500 companies read about
4 - 5 books a month—an impressive
habit that they can do despite
working in a demanding executive
role. Reading is a stimulating mental
activity that can boost your working
memory and language proficiency,
not to mention the added knowledge
from informative and expositional
articles. Reading on a daily basis also
strengthens neural connections in the
brain, contributing to overall brain
health and slowing down late-life
cognitive impairment.
MAINTAINING A HEALTHY,
BALANCED DIET
Look after your body by eating
healthy and balanced meals daily.
Having a regular balanced diet
ensures that you’re getting adequate
nutritional support for your brain and
body, allowing you to perform at your
optimum levels.
EXERCISING REGULARLY
Exercising regularly improves your
overall health, physical stamina and
mood. People who exercise regularly
are able to perform better at physical
WAKING UP EARLY
People who tend to wake up earlier
than most are known to be more
productive than night owls. As most
activities tend to happen during the
daytime, successful people make
sure to wake up before sunrise to get
ready to take on the challenges of the

day. Truly, Benjamin Franklin’s quote will never go out
of style: Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man
healthy, wealthy and wise.
TAKING RISKS AND OVERCOME FEARS
Stepping out of your comfort zones is one of the
habits you need to acquire on your path to success.
Returns necessitate the acceptance of risk. If you want
to be successful, you must brace yourself for you will
encounter risks and uncertainties along the way.
ENHANCING YOUR SKILLS
Being good at something should not stop you from
getting even better at it, nor should it prevent you
from acquiring a new skill. After all, the world is
constantly evolving, and more companies are looking
forward to hiring people in skill-based markets rather
than traditional talent acquisition platforms.
LOVING YOURSELF
Perhaps this is the most important tip of all. Most of
us do not prioritise our own selves, putting others
first instead: be it work, family, friends or even loved
ones. However, this attitude is counterproductive
and hinders self-development. Love yourself—but
not in the self-centred sense—if you want to improve
remarkably and see things going your way. You need
to accept who you are, including your strengths and
weaknesses.
CHANGING BAD HABITS
Changing your unnecessary and unproductive habits
is an acquired habit in itself. Most people tolerate
their own misgivings and self-destructive habits as
an escape route or acts of self-gratification. Resisting
the pull of bad habits is a mark of a truly disciplined
person—one who is committed to self-improvement.
THE GROWTH MINDSET:
The Road to Self-Improvement
The more we grow and acquire maturity, the more we
realise that there is so much that we do not know.
The most successful and highly-effective people
keep themselves productive, constantly aspiring for
improvement and learning new things. They retain
and practise healthy habits that uplift a holistic lifestyle
that encourages productivity, mindfulness, and mental
resilience while preserving a healthy mind and body.
Start incorporating these habits in your life and see
the change for yourself. We wish you all the best in
your personal journey of self-improvement!

DEALING WITH BULLYING
IN THE WORKPLACE
Bullying is a pattern of behaviour characterised by
deliberate humiliation and violence against others, often
committed by aggressive individuals unto those who
are typically more vulnerable. As a ubiquitous social
phenomenon, bullying can happen in any setting and
to any individual, even to those who are perceived to
be strong. It is not simply an interpersonal rife between
the bully and victim: the social setting that promotes
bullying as acceptable social behaviour is also a factor
to be assessed.
Perhaps in schools and neighbourhoods, you’ve
witnessed a bullying incident as a passive bystander.
Most of the time, the bully verbally and physically
assaults a non-violent victim, humiliating the victim in
front of encouraging peers and helpless watchers.
The workplace is not exempted from this deviant social
behaviour. Bullying is also a frequent occurrence in
the professional setting, despite strict policies against
physical violence and verbal harassment. To maintain
superiority and compensate for lack of self-esteem and
respect, bullies resort to passive-aggressive behaviour
against their colleagues, challenging the victim’s
perceived status in the workplace. Both genders can be
victims of bullying. Misogynistic attitudes and outdated
beliefs about traditional gender roles complicate the
problem even more.

According to the Workplace Bullying and Trauma Institute
(WBTI), a U.S. organisation dedicated to the study and
prevention of workplace bullying, 72% of workplace
bullies are superiors or bosses. This presents a complex
power dynamic, with the boss having direct control
over the subordinate. Workplace bullying may result in
tangible economic losses for the organisation in terms of
reduced productivity and high human resources turnover.
These are the commonly reported bullying behaviours
experienced by many professionals in the workplace:
• Malicious patterns of aggressive communication,
either through verbal or non-verbal cues, which
include direct threats, intimidating language, and
passive-aggressive behaviour.
• Spreading malicious, humiliating or defamatory
statements against colleagues, with the intention of
harming the reputation and career advancement of
the victim.
• Intentionally and arbitrarily modifying the working
arrangements of the victim, including but not
limited to increasing job responsibilities beyond
the reasonable requirements of the job, removing
duties from the victim without just cause, setting
unreasonable deadlines or schedules, etc.
• Preventing the victim from effectively carrying out his
or her duties, which includes withholding necessary
information, tampering working files, stations or
equipment, and deliberately preventing the victim
from attending meetings, seminars or training.
• Other malicious activities that threaten the personal
safety and belongings of the victim, such as theft of
personal items, sexual harassment, physical violence
and similar criminal offences.
Call out the bully by pointing out his or her actions,
describing in detail how his or her behaviour prevents
you from carrying out your duties, even if the bully is
your own superior. Do not resort to outbursts of anger
or profanity as this will make the situation worse. Use
simple language while maintaining a professional and
impersonal tone.
Do warn the bully by telling him or her to cease with
the toxic behaviour. By telling the bully that you’re also
going to report the incident as a disciplinary violation in
the workplace, or seek legal and prosecutorial actions,
you are communicating your readiness to resort to
serious modes of action.
DEALING WITH A WORKPLACE BULLY
Bullies tend to repeat their behaviour when they are
not confronted at the first occurrence of bullying. When
they are tolerated in the workplace, even the bullied
and other bystanders are made to believe that bullying
is normal, resulting in a dysfunctional organisational
culture. Victims of workplace bullying are emotionally
overwhelmed in dealing with the toxic behaviours of
bullies. If you have experienced bullying at the office,
take charge of the situation and stop the cycle.
1. HELP YOURSELF BY SPEAKING UP AND
UPHOLDING YOUR RIGHTS AGAINST HARASSMENT.
Bullies are often insecure, feeding on the power dynamic
of bullying to boost his or her ego. You can win over a
bully with a firm and strong demeanour, exuding selfconfidence
and conviction.
2. SEEK SUPPORT IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL
NETWORKS.
Bullies often target individuals who are independent
but isolated, which may appear to them as vulnerable,
manipulable targets. Keeping a supportive network of
friends, mentors and acquaintances in the office will
likely discourage the bully from perpetrating his or her
behaviour.
Outside of the workplace, join or participate in
professional groups that can also support you in finding
appropriate remedies to combat bullying. There are
professional organisations that provide grievance
support platforms that communicate serious issues or
violations in the workplace to applicable government
agencies and even to the company management.

3. RESORT TO SERIOUS MODES OF ACTIONS
AGAINST THE BULLY.
When personal confrontation and social support are
futile, consider resorting to serious actions.
Document the bullying incidents and submit a
letter of complaint directly to the HR manager or
executive, ensuring to copy-furnish the complaint to
your immediate superior, department head and the
bully being complained of.
HR will most likely schedule a conference involving
the bully and the victim, as well as other concerned
employees. After the formal conference, a
subsequent investigation may also be conducted
by the HR staff, gathering relevant evidence to
sanction applicable penalties in accordance with
the employee code of conduct. The HR executive
will most likely decide the applicable penalties
or sanctions based on the recommendation of
the investigating HR personnel. Serious bullying
incidents involving physical violence, repeated
verbal abuse, intentional obstruction of working
arrangements and even sexual harassment may
result in the bully being fired and permanently
banned from the workplace.
If the bully is your boss or someone of higher rank
than you, express your full conviction that there are
legal remedies you’re entitled to resort to under the
Labour Law, as well as applicable penal provisions
under the Penal Code and Anti-Harassment Law in
relation with harassment and discrimination.
4. FIND A BETTER WORKPLACE.
If the company is silent about the bullying incidents
despite having received bullying complaints,
recognise the fact that the workplace itself
encourages and tolerates the toxic culture of bullying
and unhealthy working relationships. Understand
that this company is not worth your time, effort and
professional expertise.
Bullying in the workplace is emotionally stressful
and hinders professional growth, but you can do
something about it. The bottom line is to stand up
against bullying, leaving no room for tolerance and
ensuring that the bully will receive the applicable
sanctions.
It will also be in your best interest to start looking
for a new job if the organisation you’re working for
does not address bullying issues with severity and
urgency. We deserve to grow in a happy, productive
and harmonious organisation, and dealing with
bullying in the workplace do not form part of our
job descriptions!

FITNESS
5SAFE AND
EASY
WORKOUTS
FOR
PREGNANT
WOMEN
Pregnant women often excuse
themselves for not exercising
regularly. From backaches and
swelling ankles to insomnia,
lack of appetite and stress,
the physical challenges of
pregnancy make it difficult for
moms and would-be moms to
exercise.
Pregnancy is indeed a crucial
stage for both the mother and
the baby. Adequate physical
exercise, aside from balanced
nutrition, will aid in the
proper development of the
growing baby. Even physicians
recommend that pregnant
women should exercise,
albeit with careful exertion
and moderation. Exercising
during pregnancy is proven to
alleviate back pain, bloating
and constipation. It also
maintains muscle strength and
tone, allowing the pregnant
woman to better cope with
labour pains on the day of
birth delivery.
We recommend these five
safe and easy workouts that
every pregnant woman can
accomplish.

1. PRENATAL YOGA
Yoga is one of the best workouts recommended for
pregnant women, particularly to enhance flexibility
and balance. Doing yoga ensures that the joints
stay in good shape while also improving blood
circulation and muscle tone.
Yoga promotes calmness and relaxation, which
is also ideal for pregnant women experiencing
anxiety, insomnia and restlessness. This activity
also improves focus and concentration, making
pregnant women more likely to be calmer and in
control during the actual delivery of the baby.
For safety purposes, avoid doing difficult poses
that challenge balance and coordination as the
baby bump grows. Overstretching is also not
recommended for pregnant women, especially in
the latter stages of pregnancy. Avoid poses that
lie flat on the back to ease the pressure against
the pelvic bone. Pregnant women should also duly
consult with an OB-gynecologist before engaging
in yoga or other exercises.
2. WALKING
Walking is one of the simplest ways to exercise
during pregnancy. It is an easy cardio workout that
does not put too much pressure on the ankles
and knees. Special equipment is not necessary to
accomplish this activity. Just a quick ten-minute
stroll around the block or at the park is good
enough, no pressure!
Pregnant women may notice a temporary loss
of coordination and balance, especially in the
late stages of pregnancy. They are advised to be
mindful of the surface they are walking on, making
sure that they are also wearing comfortable
footwear specially made for walking or strolling to
alleviate swelling feet.

3. WEIGHTLIFTING
Weightlifting is recommended to maintain body strength
and muscle tone. It is also safe to do during pregnancy as
long as the pregnant woman stays within her limits, and
if her OB-gynecologist approves. Using weights during
pregnancy will help pregnant women in alleviating body
pains as the baby grows and also prepares the body for
labour.
Fitness trainers recommend that pregnant women should
use lifting equipment to reduce the chance of injury
and to limit their motion range. They should also avoid
isometric movements, or those involving holding a still
position for a few seconds, as these movements tend to
make pregnant women light-headed and nauseous.
Pregnant women should also reduce the weight load
immediately if they feel like they are holding or catching
their breaths. This is to prevent high blood pressure and
reduce the risk of constricting blood flow to the baby.
After a session, they should do post-stretching.
4. PILATES
Pilates is a little to no impact exercise that aids in easing
backaches, enhancing flexibility, and maintaining good
posture. It is also a preferred workout activity for many
women to lengthen their muscles and strengthen their
core.
Pregnant women may also do pilates. However, they
should look for a Pilates class that are made suitable for
pregnant women to avoid overstretched movements
along with other activities not suitable for pregnancy.
5. WATER AEROBICS OR SWIMMING
Water aerobics and swimming are ideal, low-impact
exercises for pregnant women, offering them a total body
workout without the added strain on their knees and
joints. Moreover, dipping in the pool on a regular basis
is not only relaxing but also aids in relieving puffy ankles,
sciatic pain and nausea. Swimming and water aerobics
are also valuable in relieving pain in the ligaments and
joints.
Be extra careful when walking in the pool area to prevent
slipping. It is also dangerous for pregnant women to dive
or jump into the water.
Exercising during pregnancy is as important as having
a balanced, nutritious diet to ensure that pregnant
women are at their best in time for the delivery of the
baby. However, consult with your OB-gynecologist
before attempting an exercise regimen.

8BUDGET-
FRIENDLY
FITNESS
IDEAS
The weather’s finally cooling
down! This mild, breezy weather
is perfect for outdoor fitness
activities and nature-tripping.
Staying fit doesn’t necessarily
mean spending dirhams on gym
memberships and fitness classes.
Many outdoor and other fitness
activities are budget-friendly,
and some of them won’t even
cost you a penny. Pack your
duffel bags and sunglasses—
head to the outdoor with your
game-face, fitness mode on!

Camping is a budget-friendly recreational fitness activity
perfect for the whole family. Just pack the camping
essentials, which include tents, sleeping bags, cooking
tools and ready-made food for cooking and consumption,
and you’re good to go. You will find great and relaxing
camping spots with incredible trails in the UAE, notably
desert camps, wetland reserves, hot springs and even
seaside camps.
Lahbab sands are one of the camping spots to go camping
in the UAE. Lahbab, a good destination for beginner
campers, is also famed for stargazing, and taking photos
by the Fossil Rock. To get here, you should take the Al
Awir Road or E44 before traversing the Dubai-Hatta Road
or Ras Al Khor Road.
Tip:
Take note that free camping rules and access routes in
different sites are subject to change throughout the year.
Inquire additional information from the local authorities
before planning your camping trip.
CAMPING
HITTING THE
BEACH
Explore and hit the beaches for fun water activities and
bonding with the family. Popular beach destinations in the
UAE include Umm Suqeim Park Beach, Kite Beach Dubai,
JBR Beach, Abu Dhabi Corniche Beach, RAK Beach and
Fujairah Corniche Beach. Notably, Umm Suqeim Beach
is known for stunning views of the sea and exciting kite
surfing activities.
If you love water sports, go ahead and schedule your
beach tripping over the weekend. If you prefer to avoid
the crowd, visit the beach, ideally in the morning. Do not
forget to bring your snacks and drinks because you are on
a budget, remember.
Tip:
Some UAE beaches look idyllic and calm but take caution
because some are also known for notorious and strong
currents.

Whether you’re a natural dancer or simply love to move
with the beat, you can make dancing a part of your fitness
routine. Try different forms of dances like the modern,
trendy Zumba, or classic ballroom that brings out the retro
vibes. The important thing is to choose the groove that
moves you naturally, pumping your heart rate up!
You can always go dancing for free in your living room,
watching YouTube videos and instructional videos in
dance blogs. Try different venues: come over at a friend’s
house, or even outdoor places with free Zumba sessions.
In the UAE, belly dancing is trendy and popular among
young ladies and working women alike. Belly dancing
strengthens the abdominal muscles, as well as the
buttocks and thighs.
Tip:
Dancing engages the minor muscles, which are often
overlooked when doing weight training and cardio
exercises. Music also uplifts the mood and sense of wellbeing.
DANCING
Rock climbing is a total body exercise that engages the upper
and lower body. It is indeed a challenging sport, coupled
with the tingling adrenaline rush! Rock climbing, whether
done in indoor gyms or rocky cliffs in the wild countryside,
trains the body to acquire an incredible sense of balance and
above-average core strength.
In the UAE, rock climbing is a favourite workout among
hardcore mountain sports enthusiasts and CrossFit athletes.
Trained professionals only do high altitude rock climbing with
special climbing and safety equipment and other materials.
It is not an easy feat, even for experienced mountain
climbers: rock climbing as a pro-sport requires intensive
physical training and mental preparation. We recommend
trying indoor climbing first before engaging in outdoor rock
climbing. If you are interested in this sport, it is also important
to consult with sports professionals and experienced rock
climbers while following a rigorous training program.
ROCK CLIMBING
Tip:
For an indoor experience, schedule a climb in the highest
climbing wall in Abu Dhabi at the Dorell Sports for a
reasonable fee.
Clymb, which will open in Yas Island in 2020, will be the
tallest indoor rock climbing wall in the UAE soon!

The nature lovers’ favourite sport: hiking!
This budget-friendly activity brings one closest to nature
by traversing mystical, forest trails, crossing babbling
brooks, and following a challenging assault to the summit.
Hikers swear by the enjoyable experience they feel when
following the trails deep in the mountains and pristine
forests.
HIKING
Hiking is sure to give you an intense workout with the many
challenges you’ll encounter along the trails. There are
many mountainous parts in the UAE and Oman that every
avid or regular hiker recommends exploring. Experience
the beautiful trails in Hatta and Ras Al Khaimah where you
will find old settlements, interesting flora, and ethereal
views of the countryside.
Even those with the busiest schedules can engage in
walking. It’s an under-rated fitness activity, but for many
individuals who can’t afford to strain their muscles and
joints because of health reasons, this activity is ideal. If
you feel like burning more calories, you can also try slow
jogging or brisk walking.
WALKING

Let your mind and body experience the ‘flow’ through
yoga, a great fitness activity that comes in different
forms. If you want to achieve a greater sense of balance,
coordination and flexibility, yoga might be the ideal
activity for you.
For a start, search online for beginner tutorials. As you
progress, look for paid sessions of a yoga instructor in
your area to further advance your skills and knowledge in
doing yoga.
DOING
YOGA
WATER
AEROBICS
Water aerobics is another fun way to exercise and stay fit.
It’s an intense body workout that does not put too much
pressure on the joints. You can also try water biking, a
great water sport that focuses on lower body strength.
Water exercises reduce your body weight by half when
submerged in water, so they are not too straining on the
joints, tendons and muscles.
Definitely, the list goes on for fun and budget-friendly
ways to improve your fitness routine. Enjoy these activities
with the mild weather to come!

BALANCING IT ALL
Name: Rupsikha Borah Deori
Age: 35
Marital Status: Married
Number of children: 2

1. TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF
My name is Rupsikha, best known as Rini among
my circle of friends and family. I’m a full-time mom
to two super-active girls—Akshita, 9, and Ashrita,
5. I hail from India, and have travelled across
nineteen countries and lived in three. We moved
to Abu Dhabi in 2017. My life revolves around my
kids and my family, while doing my passion for
lifting weights and cardio in the gym, as well as
helping other moms with their fitness goals.
I’m an ISSA Internationally Certified Specialist
in Sports & Nutrition and Level 2 Internationally
Certified Gym Instructor (Active IQ). I’m currently
pursuing my Level 3 International Personal
Trainer Certification (Active IQ) which I expect to
complete this month.
2. HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN FIT? WHAT
INSPIRED YOU TO LIVE A HEALTHIER
LIFESTYLE?
Before, I was not particularly concerned about
my health. In fact, I was never really interested
in being fit. Like everyone else, I was more
concerned about looking thin.
My fitness journey began after my pregnancy.
Post-pregnancy, I weighed about 90 kgs. I started
off on the wrong foot by going on a crash, fad diet
despite warnings from my Babhen, my husband,
who is also a fitness freak. Yes, I did shed some
weight—but consequently, I lost my stamina
and my healthy glow too. I felt tired doing daily
chores, running out of breath when playing with
my kids. I realised it wasn’t a healthy way to lose
weight.
Having lost all hopes in fad diets, I went running—
pun intended!—back to Bhaben who introduced
me to weight training and proper diet. The
results were incredible, and once I saw physical
changes in my body, motivation started building
up. Slowly, I focused on losing body fat while
maintaining lean muscle. Eventually, I was lifting
heavier weights, improving my cardiovascular
resistance—until I finally decided it was time to
level up to the competitive stage.
3. DESCRIBE WHAT YOU’RE DOING TO STAY
OR GET IN SHAPE? HOW OFTEN ARE YOU
WORKING OUT AND FOR WHAT DURATION?
Initially, I focused on weight training, but later
I figured out that I enjoy doing high-intensity
training (HIIT), with my body responding better to
HIIT. I incorporated a mix of weight training and
HIIT in my fitness routine, and the results were
great. This is what I follow until now. Currently,
I am working out for three to four hours a day,
six days a week since I am preparing for a fitness
competition.
4. WHAT IS YOUR DIET LIKE?
To prepare for the competition, currently, I am on
a moderately protein-rich, low-carb, low-fat diet
with a caloric deficit. Off- or on-season, I always
eat about solid five to six meals a day.
My diet includes rich sources of ‘good’ fats:
avocado, nuts, all-natural peanut butter, whole
Omega-3 oils, eggs, macadamia nut oil, and
extra virgin olive oil. For carbs, mostly, I eat
white rice, rice cakes, and oats. As for protein
sources, I love chicken, white fish, egg whites,
and isolate whey protein. Vegetables like green
beans, spinach, broccoli and similar greens meet
my fibre requirements. I also make sure to include
micronutrient supplements like multivitamins,
omega-3, omega-6, calcium, and vitamin D3.

5. HOW DO YOU STAY MOTIVATED?
Progress is the biggest motivation for me. Any
person striving to get better will draw motivation and
passion from his or her own progress. I take pictures
of myself every week, and I constantly measure my
progress. Pictures never lie.
However, I do not rely on motivation alone. You can
easily achieve a lot if you are driven and enthusiastic
about what you’re doing. But on days when you
just don’t feel like it, discipline is what will take you
closer to your goal. Even when you are drained, and
you feel like not doing anything, a disciplined mind
will take you out of your comfort zone—telling you
it needs to be done, irrespective of how you feel.
Apart from discipline and motivation, my family is
also my greatest cheerleader. When my kids tell me
that I look fitter, saying they want to have six-packs
like me in the future—I feel very proud and inspired.
Once, my eldest daughter asked me to teach her
how to plank, and I loved that motivating moment.
To help me workout longer, my husband shares
the domestic responsibilities with me, like reading
books at night for the kids, or taking them out for
play or swimming pool. Things like these motivate
me, driving me to do my best.
6. DO YOU HAVE ANY MENTAL TRICKS THAT
YOU USE WHEN YOU JUST DON’T FEEL LIKE
WORKING OUT?
Of course, and there are so many of them! I do these
to beat the slack:
1. I aim to be disciplined in whatever I do. The
struggle is rarely about working out—but to push
myself just to go to the gym! Once I’m in the gym,
the ambience and seeing like-minded, motivated
individuals automatically charges me up, and I end
up working out. So make sure to choose a gym with
an electrifying environment!
2. Set a deadline, or sign up for a transformation
challenge or competition! Doing this will give you
tunnel vision—pushing your body every time you
feel like losing the drive. I stick to this mantra in
everything I do, and not just in my fitness routines.
When I plan to complete a task in a day, I make sure
that it is completed within the deadline—even if it
means having to do it until midnight. Believe me, it
works.

3. Take measurements and pictures bi-weekly and
track your progress. Sometimes, minor changes in the
body might not be visible in the weighing scale, but as I
said before, pictures do not lie. Once you see progress,
it will be addicting!
7. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR MOMS WHO
SAY THEY DON’T HAVE TIME FOR EXERCISE?
As moms, we are mostly organised for and committed to
our families. We would not compromise a thing when it
comes to our kids or husbands. But we seldom take care
of ourselves. Quite often, we feel guilty when we invest
time for ourselves.
Still, we should make time for exercise. Think of it this
way: having a fitter, healthier body means you’ll be able
to take good care of your family even better.
Most moms are already active, which means they
already have a decent NEAT (Non-Exercise Activity
Thermogenesis) score. House-cleaning, playing with
kids, walking and shopping for groceries, and a host
of other domestic chores are calorie-burning routines
too! So it’s about acquiring good dietary habits and a
workable fitness structure to your daily life.
If possible, head to the gym and exercise for at least
forty minutes, which is more than enough. If not, do your
workout at home. There are so many exercises that you
can do with your body weight or with simple instruments
that you can keep at home.
If you are trying to lose weight, do empty stomach
cardio or walk in the park for thirty minutes. Taking care
of your body is of the utmost importance. If you have
absolutely no time, take control of your diet. Even by
removing fried foods or sugars from your food, you will
see results. Unless you are fit, you can’t expect your kids
to be healthy too, and don’t we want our kids to grow
strong and healthy?
8. THINGS YOU’VE YOU TRIED AND HATED—DIETS
AND WORKING OUT?
A ketogenic diet, or keto, just doesn’t work for me. I
lose weight rapidly with keto, but I also lose energy and
strength along with the fat breakdown. It also causes
gas problems in my stomach. I am a high-intensity girl,
which means I need glycogens to fuel my workouts and
replenish my muscles afterwards. Even when I am on a
low-carb diet, I time my carb intake in between workouts
to have maximum insulin sensitivity. Weight training and
nutrition is about finding what works best for you. Not
every fad diet or fitness routine suits everyone. Fitnesswise
though, I enjoy any sort of physical activity.
9. WHAT ARE YOUR TOP 3 TIPS TO HELP WOMEN
GET INTO SHAPE POST-PREGNANCY?
1. Do not stress. Give your body time to recover.
Spend time with your little one, and slowly start working
towards your health. It’s a necessary part of the process—
so enjoy it!
2. Do not overeat or indulge excessively and avoid
junk foods during your pregnancy. It is your wild card to
gaining weight! Too much of anything is not good. Have
a balanced diet, which will pay off for your little one too:
healthy moms make the best milk!
3. When you’re ready to be active, do low-intensity
activities like a thirty-minute stroll in the park with your
kids every day. You might also want to explore the option
of Low-Pressure Fitness (LPF) to restore your pelvic
health. See a trained professional before doing LPF
activities.

TRAVEL
EAT, PRAY, LOVE
IN UBUD, BALI:
A PARADISE
DESTINATION OF
REDISCOVERY
AND HEALING

Healing is the central theme of the
inspirational memoir Eat, Pray, Love:
One Woman’s Search for Everything
Across Italy, India and Indonesia—a true
to life autobiography of Elizabeth Gilbert,
a divorced woman who rediscovered life
and the meaning of true love through
her travels. Eat, Pray, Love inspired me
to embark on a journey to understand
myself, and these three words from
Gilbert still play a significant role in my
life.
In July 2019, I packed my belongings
and said my goodbyes to my life in the
sandbox that is Abu Dhabi. I set out to
start a new life and career in Indonesia—
an exotic Asian country of Zen living, selfreflection,
and gratitude.
Most people think of Indonesia as a
slideshow of breathtaking sunsets,
pristine beaches, sacred temples,
and verdant rice paddies—sights and
landscapes of the paradise that is Bali.
However, maybe far from the popular
allure of this tourist-laden place, I initially
visited Pekanbaru—a quaint city located
in the province of Riau on the island of
Sumatra. When I arrived in the busy town,
I was greeted by the thick jungle that was
home to thousands of wild monkeys.
Monkey-watching, a hobby I found
too inviting to do, became a favourite
pastime.
I found that it was time to go after being
acquainted with the place, and having
experienced three months of poor air
quality due to the slash and burn of palm
oil plantations in neighbouring parts of
the island. Fall break came to invite my
soul once again, and I was off to Eat, Pray,
and Love my way through UBUD, a small
town located in the uplands of BALI.
FINALLY, TO BALI
I arrived at Ngurah Rai International
Airport (DPS), the international airport
located in the southern region of Bali. A
cab driver welcomed me with an open
smile of hospitality, leaving a warm
impression of what Bali is as a living
paradise. He quickly loaded my luggage
into the car and informed me that the
drive to Ubud would take about an hour
and a half. It was a busy Friday afternoon,
with many people waiting impatiently
in traffic headed to the beach. Scooters
zoomed in and out between cars in
congested streets and intersections. The
journey to Ubud became apparent as I
started to notice tall, adorned statues,
shrines and temples, and even the sight
of volcanoes off into the distance.
Having arrived in Ubud, busy streets lined
with cafes, yoga studios and boutiques
are waiting to be explored. The winding
roads led us from the hustle and bustle
of the city centre to the rice fields of
Tegallalang. I checked-in to my villa,
immediately amazed by the views of the
neighbouring rice paddies and my first
Balinese sunset. That evening I enjoyed
a relaxing swim and a plate of delicious
pumpkin ravioli, retiring in my villa to
relax and wrap the day. Day 1, with all the
sights and sounds of commuting, setting
afoot in Ubud, had come to an end.
EAT
The local restaurants and cafés are
teeming with flavourful vegetarian dishes,
fresh juices, delectable sweet treats, and
tasty cocktails to offer. I tried the famous
‘floating breakfast’, curiously awed with
having my favourite meal of the day at
the pool. Things got quite interesting, as
the day wore on.
I decided to travel four kilometres from
my hotel to the Tegallalang Rice Terrace.
Most people come here for the views and
pictures at the different swing stations. I
did both, of course, but also decided to
do something that I had actually passed
up several times prior. During my time at
the Tegallalang Rice Terrace, I decided
to indulge in an organic tea and coffee
tasting. In addition to the tasting, I
decided to have what the server joked
about being a “poopacino.” Coffee made
from ‘poop’ was definitely not on my todo
list, but I decided to give it a try. The
kopi luwak, also known as civet coffee, is

one of the world’s most expensive coffee varieties. It is
made from partially digested coffee cherries that are
eaten and defecated by luwaks, an Indonesian cat-like
animal. As unappealing as it sounds, it was actually a
very smooth cup of coffee with a distinctive yet pleasant
taste.
* As of November 2019, the entrance fee for the
Tegallalang Rice Terrace is 0.71 USD / 10,000 IDR
* The tea and coffee tasting was free; however, the
price for the kopi luwak is 4.62 USD / 65,000 IDR.
PRAY
While on this trip, I was eager to start each day with
gratitude, meditation, and prayer, something that
I hadn’t regularly been doing since my move to
Pekanbaru. This trip allowed me to renew this healing
routine for the soul. I was grateful, and yet, I still wanted
more. I wanted to experience the true Balinese Zen.
I booked a seven-hour tour on Airbnb Experiences,
described as being a “holy trip for the soul.” The
tour included prayer and offerings at a local temple,
water soul cleansing at a waterfall, sound and crystal
relaxation healing, as well as Karmic reading by a
Balian, a Balinese shaman.
Our first stop was the sacred Taman Beji Giriya Waterfall
located in Badung. We descended down a stairway into
a series of canyons and through sacred waterfalls—
washing, cleansing, and drinking the sacred water.
I felt the greatest release standing arms wide, openhanded—yelling
my loudest scream under the
waterfall. At that moment, I felt the release of all my
frustrations, stress, and doubts. My body, mind, and
spirit become one: devoid of all negative thoughts.
It was an amazing experience: cleansing the body,
mind and spirit—receiving blessings of abundance,
health, and happiness.
*Price of the Matasidhi Holy Trip for the Soul -
$83.30 USD / 965,000 IDR.
(Transportation, sarong and Vegetarian lunch
provided)
LOVE
The people and culture of Bali make it one of the
most amazing destinations I have visited. A sincere
feeling of love is radiated by its inhabitants, whether
from their kind gestures, warm smiles, or selfless
hospitality. With all the love in the ambience and
breeze of Bali, it is the perfect place to practise selflove
and enjoy the things I love.
From the villa, I couldn’t help but to stop and look
around, appreciating even the warmth of the sun,

the crisp, fresh air, and lush green scenery
surrounding me. But once the sun had set, I
decided not to stop there.
I wanted to celebrate my love for music and
dance by attending traditional Barong dance
at the Ubud Royal Palace. The Ubud Royal
Palace is a historical building built in the 16th
century, once the official residence of the royal
family of Ubud. Barong is a traditional dance,
the most well-known dance in Bali. Barong tells
stories interweaving mythology and history
in one performance. These stories are often
centred on universal themes of love, war, or the
battle between good and evil. The traditional
dresses, music, and dances were all captivating
and worth sitting in even through the rain. The
Bumblebee Dance, or Oleg Tambulilingan,
was my favourite as it represented a traditional
Balinese love story symbolising the courtship
ritual of young Balinese natives in love.
*Shows are held nightly beginning at 7:30 pm.
Price of the ticket - $7.15 USD / 100,000 IDR.
[AH1]
I travel quite often and alone most of the time.
This trip was different. I was especially excited
to take my first solo trip to Bali. I wanted it to
be my own—a time I could focus on myself and
my spiritual and mental health. So while it may
not have included all of the top tourist locations
or Instagram spots, it was just what I needed,
wanted, and imagined it to be. I can honestly
say that Bali fed my mind, body, and soul.
I did it. I made this Bali trip my own. It may not
have included all of the top tourist locations or
Instagram spots—but it was just what I imagined
it to be.
#EATPRAYLOVE
If you’re unable to get away, don’t let that stop
you. Eat, pray, love isn’t something that can only
happen in exotic travel destinations. Here are
some #EATPRAYLOVE tips for eating, praying,
and loving anywhere, anytime—helping you
find joy and purpose consistently.

1.
EAT. Try a new restaurant or recipe.
Feed your mind by reading a new
book and or listening to a thoughtprovoking
podcast.
2. PRAY. Start your day with prayer
or meditation. Give thanks for your
blessings or the small things we
sometimes take for granted. Pick
up a gratitude journal from your
local bookstore, or download the
Calm App for daily meditation and
breathing exercises.
3. LOVE. Be loved and give love. Read
a positive affirmation, write it down,
and share it on your social media.
It could be just what someone else
needs to make it through the day.
“People tend to think that happiness
is a stroke of luck, something that will
descend like fine weather if you’re
fortunate. But happiness is the result of
personal effort. You fight for it, strive for
it, insist upon it, and sometimes even
travel around the world looking for it. You
have to participate relentlessly.”
TALES FROM THE
REDRIDINGWANDERER (AAHNA)
ANCHORED FOR EXPERIENCE:
YACHT NOW OR NOT?
I’ve always loved the idea of cruising by boat or travelling by ship into
the open—passing along ports, beholding the endless views of the
sea and savouring the refreshing scent and sounds of the ocean.
My fascination for ships, boats and yachts borders on the feeling of
excitement, curiosity and a little apprehension, as the sea can be a
very strange place far from the safe shores of the land.
I’m back with another short tale featuring a lovely, nostalgic
tour of a full-rigged ship, specifically a clipper ship, designed
for speed for trading merchants in the mid-19th-century.
Today, clipper ships and other full-rigged ships boasting
heavy masts and square rigs form part of navies for
diplomatic and training purposes.
Jump on-board and enjoy the trip to the impressive
clipper ship belonging to the Royal Navy of Oman: the
Shabab Oman II.

THE RETURN OF SHABAB OMAN II
FROM ITS INTERNATIONAL VOYAGE
Shabab Oman II is a full-rigged ship which
entered service with the Royal Navy of
Oman in 2014 and recently arrived from
its international voyage. The sailors of
Shabab Oman II travelled to take part
in the 2019 Tall Ship Races to win over
friends from all over the world. By offering
their friendliness and hospitality which
form the cornerstone of Omani culture,
this ship successfully wooed audiences
from across 17 ports in 12 countries in
Europe. Shabab Oman II aims to spread
the Sultanate’s message of peace, mutual
understanding and cooperation across
the world.
The Omani sailors, some of them in their
crisp navy-blue uniforms and a few in their
traditional, flowing white dishdashas, sang
and danced to the tunes of traditional
Omani bagpipes to woo the audience
who visited the ship to enjoy the event.
The impressive building of the classiclooking
ship awed visitors like us. We were
welcomed aboard to experience Shabab
Oman II. Here’s how it looks like! This
definitely intrigued me to plan a yacht
experience soon.
PLANNING FOR A YACHT EXPERIENCE
Yacht tours feature different activities aside
from cruising in designated sailing waters,
often offering lovely dining experience
away from the crowd and noise of the
urban hustle and options to engage in
water sports, island tours and even
fishing. Some special yacht cruising tours
include snorkelling and scuba diving in
coral-abundant, clear waters, while some
would also let you experience adrenalinepumping
water sports such as jet-skiing,
surfing and wakeboarding. Flexible
itineraries make the yacht experience
enjoyable too.

TIPS TO GET A GOOD YACHT/SHIP EXPERIENCE:
1. Think about what type of yacht experience
you want to have.
2. Consider if the yacht offers comfortable
spaces and amenities.
3. Find the right match to your budget.
4. Talk to the tour organisers and share an initial
plan for the trip you want.
6. If there is a water activity or sports that you
would like to try, ask the crew. They’ll probably
make it happen!
7. Obey the rules and respect the crew members.
8. Relax and enjoy!
Enjoy the journey while it lasts! Until my next tale...
Bon voyage!

FOR THE CULTURE
EVERYDAY REINVENTION:
OVERCOMING THE OVERWHELMING AS YOU MANAGE LIFE’S TRANSITIONS
YVONNE CHIEDZA MTENGWA
If you’ve checked out my previous articles, you would
have figured out that I’m very passionate about helping
individuals and entrepreneurs figure out what their ‘next’
is through helping them reinvent the methods by which
they go at life, relationships, and businesses. Meeting
with one of my brand strategists the other day, he asked
me what direction I wanted to take my business and
coaching programmes. The usual questions came up:
“Who are you speaking to?”
“What exactly do you want to achieve?”
“How do you envision yourself getting there?
“Why, why is this so important to you?”
In that moment I realised that I needed to employ the
same pieces of advice to myself as I do with my clients
and mentees, especially when they are trying to figure
out what they should focus on next while navigating a
very noisy world and an all-round, high-octane life.
Whether you are changing jobs, starting a new business,
moving to a new city, establishing new relationships or
working towards cutting costs so you can have a better
handle on your finances, or in my case, figuring out what
next to roll out with my brands—the transition phase can
be quite taxing and downright exhausting.
OVERCOME THE OVERWHELMING, friend! The
cluttered thinking, the questionable temperament, the
rollercoaster of emotions that may make their entry—
trust and believe it’s all part of the process. Managing
your transitions successfully often requires grit and a
daily dose of faith and action. If you find yourself toiling
through your season of transitioning into your ‘next’,
appreciate that there are some elements of the process
that you simply won’t get around easily. Check out my
Top 5 tips of managing one’s self as you work through
seasons of transition:

1. FEELING OVERWHELMED IS NORMAL,
BUT DON’T STAY THERE. You aren’t a machine.
You are a human with a full range of emotions and
a host of thoughts. You aren’t crazy when you start
to feel overwhelmed. However, the real test lies in
what you do to channel any anxiety you may carry
into something positive.
I turn to praying on the daily, but during hectic
times, I’m intentional about what I allow through my
eye and ear gates to stop the anxiety from taking
a comfortable seat in my life. Whatever you must
do, while you acknowledge the feeling of being
overwhelmed, overcome it by making sure you
consciously work towards neutralising the stressors
by doing something cathartic. Pray, meditate, listen
to motivational podcasts, chill in a neighbourhood
coffee shop—whatever your fix is—make time to
squeeze that in.
2. TRANSITIONS BUILD ADAPTIVE CAPACITY.
Change is constant. If you aren’t adapting to change,
you may very well be dying a slow death. The more
change you endure, the tougher your adaptive muscles
become. I work in a pressure-filled environment
that requires managing a lot of stakeholders, all
of who want different things oftentimes all at once.
Experience has taught me to roll with the punches,
manage expectations and do my best to keep calm
through seasons of testing. Everything always works
out, so there’s no sense in allowing my blood pressure
to rise when things go haywire (easier said than done,
I know, and I’m guilty for getting a little riled up from
time to time). Know this: with each item you remove
from your checklist; you have likely learned a more
efficient way of getting it done next time. Find the
lessons in your transitional seasons of life and use
them as foundational blocks for your ‘next’.
3. KNOW THAT THE PRESSURE SHALL PASS. The
pressure, the pressure—it won’t last long. Many of us
are aware that the planning and pre-launch phase of
any project is always rife with pressure. Life’s switches
can be equally tension-ridden if you don’t accept
them for what they are—seasons of working through
changes. As days pass on and you master the tricks
required to streamline processes, better manage
people and expectations, you become more efficient,
and pressure points fade away. However hectic your
days might be, know that stress will end. Take every
day at a time, ending each day satisfied with the fact
that you have done your best.

4. LEARN YOUR LESSON. Learning
the lessons is integral in developing
the capacity to achieve your goals. In
your transitory phase, you will endure
a mix of emotions, and you may very
well question your abilities, knowledge,
and skill set. Folks may act in a certain
kind of way as they adjust to you, who
is working towards your new reality—
and that’s okay too! Whether things are
smooth-sailing or fraught with drama,
find the lessons to be learned. The
stage-by-stage analysis will help you
manage relationships, comprehend
human behaviour, plan for future
projects better, identify your strengths
and detect your areas of weakness
along the way.
5. COMMUNICATE. I’m not a fan of
operating solo, especially when I’m
going through some things. It’s true—
the enemy does his best work when
he’s got you isolated! Personally, I’m
super relational, drawing strength
from a strong network of hardworking,
focused people who happily sow seeds
of reasoning in my life. It’s important
that you too have a diverse network of
individuals you can trust in your moments
of weakness or downright fluster as you
work through the changes. You matter,
and you need sounding boards. It’s
also important that you understand
that individuals in your life are all
wired differently and will, therefore,
respond to what you are going through
differently. Communicate. Folks can’t
work with you or extend grace where
needed if they don’t know what you
are up against. Manage expectations
by communicating your position.
I can share a boat-load of other
pointers I’ve discovered along my
journey. Relocating to four countries
in the past fifteen years, getting
married, becoming a mother, making
new friends, reconnecting with old
ones and cutting my losses with some,
starting businesses, navigating the
professional landscape and a host of
other transitional seasons taught me
many things about overcoming the
overwhelming. I would be remiss to not
end my list of Top 5’s by mentioning
that it’s important you keep going at
it. Practice every day reinvention by
pressing on with whatever lies before
you until you are satisfied. Punctuate
the tension with some fun, lighthearted
moments with loved ones and take
the time to unwind and reclaim your
energy!

CREATING
CULTURALLY
DIVERSE
FRIENDSHIPS
BY JEROME DOUGLAS

Vladimir Lenin left us a golden line which is even more
famous than himself: Tell me who your friends are,
and I will tell you who you are. This quote delivers
an unencrypted message, one which highlights the
importance of friendships and how they impact our
personal identities.
Our lives are influenced by the diverse people we
connect with on a daily basis. In this ever-evolving
society turning into one cosmopolitan melting pot of
races, cultures and social minorities, we are also learning
to accept and welcome with open-mindedness the
possibility of creating genuine cross-cultural friendships.
We are reaching out every day to people of different
backgrounds, learning their ways and practices, and
constantly creating the Goldilocks social zone of mutual
understanding and tolerance.
With friendships spanning across countries and
continents, we could learn so much more.
LEARNING NEW LANGUAGES
Language is the mirror of a particular culture. Many
social scientists believe that studying languages shed
a deeper understanding of the cultures affixed to these
languages. A language is indeed created and moulded
by the culture that gave birth to it.
Consequently, learning the native tongue of a friend
hailing from another country forges a deeper bond.
Conversations become more natural, more relatable and
empathetic. Be genuine in learning the subtle expressions
of a new language to connect more intimately with a
friend.
DESIRE TO TRAVEL THE WORLD
Friends from different backgrounds and countries will
most likely share with you the beauty, diversity and
uniqueness of the places they’ve come from. I know
this for a fact, having travelled to the destinations my
friends have told me about. They inspired me to see the
corners of the world they’ve seen with their very eyes.
I sang Havana at the presidential palace in Cuba and
gazed from the top of the majestic Burj Khalifa. The
taste of vanilla ice cream is even made better in the
hot and humid avenues of the historical city of Manila.
I have felt the cool drench of monsoon rains in Mumbai
and quenched my ancient curiosity in the impossibly
arresting pyramids of Giza.
I’ve been to many places, all thanks to my friends from
these parts of the world.
The world is even made more beautiful in my imagination
after listening to stories from my friends. So let yourself
go and accept your adventurous side! See the world
through the eyes of cultural diversity: Yalla! Vamos!
GASTRONOMIC DELIGHTS FROM VARIOUS
CULTURES
A culturally diverse network of friends will also lead you to
discover a wide range of exquisite and savoury cuisines.

Your friends will give you the best recommendations for
the best dishes from their own countries. Indeed, the
best ways to get to a friend’s heart is to fill the tummy!
From my friends, I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing
eclectic gastronomic delights ranging from Arabic, Asian,
Indian and Caribbean cuisines. While working in the
UAE, I’ve found that most types of cuisines are available
in the major cities. There’s no excuse for my friends or me
to not to try our traditional cuisines!
It is amazing how food can intertwine people from
different cultures. Without my friends coming from diverse
cultures, I would not have pressed any attempts to try
new cuisines. My friends and I have experienced being
given group treats from restaurants, who are astounded
by the fact that we are from diverse backgrounds.
Masha’Allah! Bonito!
UNDERSTANDING OTHER CULTURES AND
LEARNING FROM EACH OTHER
Creating friendships with individuals of different cultures
and races from around the globe is life-changing,
sowing not only tolerance but also genuine appreciation
and understanding of the values, beliefs and practices
of different cultures. Realising that we are cultural
ambassadors of our nations, it brings about a sense of
pride and uniqueness.
TO A CULTURALLY DIVERSE WORLD
In conclusion, there is much to gain from international
alliances. Creating culturally diverse friendships,
especially in the free, dynamic cities of the world, is
ushering us to a more progressive era where we hope to
finally eradicate the primitive concepts of discrimination
on the basis of race, sex, religion and culture. Today,
we do know that humanity has come so far, reminiscing
the eras from the annals of history when languages and
cultural differences were once major frontiers, aside from
the waters and country borders.
Share, care and spread love everywhere! Let’s create
culturally diverse friendships and lead amazing lives!
Ma’salama! Adios! Au revoir!
BOOK REVIEW:
THE RICHEST MAN
IN BABYLON
The Richest Man in Babylon by George S. Clason is a
timeless collection of parables about wealth-building
and financial independence. The majority of the
original text of the book was first published in 1926 in
the form of informational brochures on basic financial
management. In 1927, these brochures were compiled
and subsequently published as a book.
The Richest Man in Babylon tells the adventures of an
ordinary Babylonian man who managed to build his
wealth with guiding principles about attaining financial
freedom and success. The tales are compelling and
written in an entertaining manner. Wise characters,
mostly protagonists, share lessons learned from past
failures in order to allow their readers to benefit from
their experiences and avoid the same pitfalls in their own
road to financial success. Every story is full of hope and
wisdom.
THE BOOK INCLUDES FIVE MAIN THEMES:
1. Saving money
2. Avoiding Debt
3. Investing
4. Continuous Learning
5. Valuing Hard Work
The whole book is written in a narrative style.
The linguistic style may seem archaic, as an
attempt to reflect that these stories were lifted
from the ancient times, yet undoubtedly, the
messages are simple and clear. Although the
reader may wonder if the approaches are
truly logical or scientific, the tales provide
uncomplicated heuristics, sometimes even
bordering on hasty generalisation.
The book addresses the common financial
problems that the average individual will
inevitably face in their personal lives: debt
paralysis, stagnant finances, unexpected
economic spinoffs, bogging down in cheap
jobs, and investment procrastination.
However, it may be said that the lack of
scientific or empirical evidence is one of the
major flaws of this book. For example, why the
need to save 10%—and why exactly 10%? For
instance, some people may choose to save less
or more depending on their financial situations.
Most of the advice in this book should be used
as flexible rules-of-thumb.
MAIN LESSONS INCLUDE:
1. Saving at least 10% of what you receive
2. Making wise investments
3. Taking advice from an expert in your field
4. Paying off your debt
5. Planning for your future
For the most part, The Richest Man in Babylon
is an excellent reference for anyone who wants
to improve their personal finances. It makes for
a memorable gift to a recent college graduate,
or to a young professional starting out in his or
her career. The book is replete with valuable,
enduring lessons in personal finance that will
always be applicable in our daily lives.
