Welcome to our annual Business Year in Review
highlighting the many dedicated businesses and
organizations in all sectors that contribute to the
economy of Peterborough and the Kawarthas.
In this issue, of special interest are the achievements of
local businesses: the 70th anniversary of ISL Insurance
Brokers, Fox Law’s relocation to their new offices on
Water Street, D.M. Wills Associates Inc.’s winning of
two chamber business excellence awards: Employer of
the Year and Professional Services, and Weichel and
Associates winning of the Commercial Development
and Renovation award. Signarama has just launched
their new division called Fully Promoted.

Two Chamber Excellence Awards

D.M. Wills Associates Ltd. was honoured at this year’s
Greater Peterborough Chamber of Commerce Business
Excellence Awards to receive the awards for Professional
Services and Employer of the Year.
Michael Lang, Vice President of this engineering, environmental
and planning services firm, attributes their
success to their people and work environment.
“We believe the talent and character of our staff are
what sets us apart. This recognition reflects just that,”
says Lang. “We started small, and have worked hard to
maintain the family feeling as we have grown to have
more than 85 employees - we have each others’ backs.”
After more than 25 years at their previous location, Havelock
Metal Co. has relocated to a new state-of-the-art facility
in Peterborough, at 901 Major Bennett Dr. This has
resulted in a larger manufacturing area and storage facility,
a better yard for pick-ups and deliveries, and a large
showroom to better serve their customers across Canada.
Havelock Metal manufactures metal roofing, siding, trims
and accessories for residential, commercial, industrial,
agricultural, and cottage, purposes, with a focus on quality,
service and value.
Metal roofing continues to grow in popularity as consumers
become more educated about the many advantages
it offers – such as only needing to do your roof once, as
it will last as long as the structure itself, and that it is
maintenance-free, with many environmental benefits,
including keeping waste out of landfills. Havelock Metal

architectural panels that are available in a wide range of

Over the eight years since Todd and Jennifer Lawson
bought the business, they have relied on Terry Windrem
for their financial, business and strategic planning.

workers. This new system makes it easier for clients to
keep track of the training. The system contacts both the
client and the worker to inform them when they need
to have refresher training.”
Paget went on to say that the typical clients of HRS Group
are in the construction, industrial, mining, healthcare,
and government sectors. “Our clients are regulated by the
Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act,” Paget said.

WITH 30 COMMUNITY PROJECTS
An anniversary of 30 years is not a common
thing in today’s corporate world.
Staying relevant in the consulting industry
and active as community business

brought awareness to the causes they
supported. Their online accounts documented
each event and helped the community
learn about the organizations
and volunteer opportunities, and created

were open to friends and family.
The #wills30for30 campaign included
participation by the Wills team in events
such as helping at a local shelter; creating
a community garden; attending sports
fundraisers; adopting a zoo animal, and
winning tickets for charity events, to
name a few. Staff who were personally
involved with an event were welcome to
help co-ordinate, bringing their own care
and compassion to the table. With cooperation
from the various organizations, a
creative office interaction was planned
with each event, memories were created
and the conversations continue within
the office.
“Each event really developed its own
personality because of the enthusiastic
organizations we worked with and the
passion of our Team,” continues Bonner.
“Our office has had some memorable
moments through this campaign.”
The final event of the campaign was a
repeat from a 2014 corporate day
because it was such a positive experience
– working with Habitat for
Humanity on a local property, this
event highlights one of Wills’ core
values: “Community – we believe our
work has an impact on our community,
we take this very seriously”.

Peterborough and the Kawarthas are centrally located
to many markets with the result that many businesses
have established their offices here. The location, people,
infrastructure and balanced living offer a highly skilled
labour force, diverse economic base, superior quality of
life and competitive business costs.
There are many important building projects in the design
phase, underway and completed in Peterborough
and the surrounding areas. Many businesses choose to
locate here because of the lower price of land compared
to the GTA.
Dean Findlay, Chief Building Official at the City of Peterborough,
says that industrial, commercial and institutional
construction remains strong, and has been fairly
consistent during the past few years. Completed this year
are the Hospice Peterborough Care Centre and the new
City of Peterborough’s $22 million Public Works facility
at the former Coach Canada headquarters on Webber
Avenue.
“For the first time ever the building permits have exceeded
$2 million this year, evidence that the commercial and
industrial sectors are going strong,” says Findlay.
Findlay says that major projects underway this year
include the new three storey Brock Mission homeless
shelter on Murray Street scheduled for completion next
year; the Y-Lofts luxury condo style rental suites, an Atria
Development Project in the historic YMCA building at
George and Murray; the new urban park located in the
former Louis Street parking lot, a $6 million public and
private project that will include a skating rink, green areas,
stage, farmer’s market, washrooms, and residential
and/or commercial space; and the $85 million expan-

with 1253 HLM Inc. to build a low-rise condominium
style apartment building at 1253 Lansdowne
Street West beside the Super 8 Hotel. The building
under construction is the first of three buildings
planned for the project site. Neil Campbell of Aside
Architects is Castleridge Court’s architect of record.
The buildings are strategically located adjacent to the
Harper Park natural area and the Lansdowne Street
West commercial area.
The 44 suite building has primarily two bedroom suites
and a few one bedroom suites. The four storey building
has walkout-style apartment suites on the lower
level. Individual storage units will also be located on
the lower level. Onsite parking and a select number
of parking garages will be provided.
“The ‘smoke and vape-free’ building will be geared
to adults and seniors aged 50 and up,” says Murray
Davenport. The stone and brick building will have a
secure entry door system and an elevator to provide
access to all floors. The suites have been professionally
designed with simple, spacious and flowing layouts.
The building is constructed with insulated concrete
form (ICF) exterior walls and interior corridor walls.
The floors are hollow core precast concrete. The attic
space is insulated to current Ontario Building Code,
2012 specifications. The 44 suite building will cost
approximately $5,500 annually to heat so will have
a carbon footprint less than any heritage building in
central Peterborough.
M.J. Davenport & Associates Ltd. is a well-established
Consulting Professional Engineering and Planning firm
that has provided a wide range of professional engineering
and planning services to the new development
industry since 1983. Castlewood Place, an attractive
59 suite apartment/condominium building located at
1833 Willowcreek Boulevard, was also constructed in

Other projects under construction include the $24 million
six storey seniors’ apartments housing project on
Bonaccord, with a proposed 81 suites, being built by
the Peterborough Housing Corporation. The adjacent
building, formerly the Fleming College School of Trades,
is being renovated to include 38 apartments for single
mothers as well as a daycare facility. Greg Gordon is the
architect, and Westmount Contracting is the contract
manager, with the trades being hired directly by PHC.
The Mount Community Centre, formerly Mount St.
Joseph, is now undergoing a major renovation by Beavermead
Construction to redevelop the 131,400 square
feet of buildings into affordable housing, office space for
non-profit organizations, and private tenants to serve
community needs and continue to be a thriving community
hub.
The new Canadian Canoe Museum is moving forward
with their project to relocate in a new building alongside
the Peterborough Liftlock on the Trent-Severn
Waterway. A design competition resulted in awarding
the project to heneghen peng architects of Dublin and
Kearns Mancini of Toronto for the building which will
have a green roof. Now in its detailed design phase,
the project is receiving cultural infrastructure funding
from the Government of Canada, funding from the
Ontario Government, local government, private donors
and more.
Leo Brouwer, President of the Peterborough and District
Construction Association, says that the commercial
industry is fairly healthy, that all their members are
busy, and he predicts that this will continue into the
near future.
“However, we still have some challenges, in that we are
still looking for skilled construction trades people, and
hope that more younger people will choose to train as
skilled labourers,” says Brouwer. “Development land is
in short supply, especially in the housing market, which
is slowing down construction. Passenger rail service
would be a great asset for moving people and reducing
havoc going to the larger suburbs.”

over 15 people at their 10,000 sq. ft. facility on Rye St. in Peterborough

emergency and preventative maintenance service.
They are the only authorized dealer in Ontario for Maximal lift trucks. Also they are the dealer for
Haulotte, Bil-Jax and skyjack booms and scissor lifts, as well as the service center for Heila, PM
Elliott and Manitou Truck Mounted Lift Equipment.
Their rental fleet has grown significantly over the years. They have put an emphasis on expanding
and upgrading their fleet to include larger and more late model units, with over 200 types of lift
equipment in stock for rent or purchase.
They have become the largest lift rental company in Central Ontario. President Chuck White says,
“We specialize in hard to find equipment. If there is a way to make it happen, we will find it! Our
customers need to know that we will always find a solution.”
To keep up with the needs of their customers, they have recently added their own in-house delivery
trucks, including a tandem axle heavy duty roll-off truck, plus a 53’ sliding axle equipment trailer.
This allows them to deliver everything from small lift trucks to large heavy equipment, in a timely
manner. Also, they are available to move other customers’ equipment as needed.
They also offer an in-house/on-site operator training for scissor lifts, boom lifts, indoor rough
terrain lift trucks which are in compliance with the Ontario Ministry of Labour.
When asked to what he attributes his company`s success, White says, “Ultimately it starts
with our loyal and dedicated ‘team of employees’. The business wouldn`t be what it is today
without our exceptional team of employees. Our loyal customer base has been an integral
part of our growth over the past 27 years, and we greatly appreciate the support and the
relationships we have built over the years.”

Retail space in downtown Peterborough is available, but
it’s hard to find anchor tenants for the storefronts, which
would then bring other occupants downtown, says Alket
Kulla, realtor at RE/MAX Eastern Realty Inc. Brokerage.
“But there is a lack of commercial space for offices,” says
Kulla. “I have clients who want to expand their businesses
but can’t find the buildings for that. I had a recent call
from an out-of-town business owner who wants to move
here and create jobs, but I don’t have the properties to
show him.”
Demand for industrial, commercial and investment property
has outstripped the supply in the city. Kulla says one
problem, for both commercial and residential new home
development is the lack of serviced land in the area.
Residential Construction Steady
Peterborough and the surrounding area are great places
to live in for many reasons – there is a thriving arts scene,
post-secondary institutions, much more cost-effective
housing prices compared to the GTA and it’s close to nature,
according to Garnet Northey, president of Spotlight
Home & Lifestyle Inc., a past president of Peterborough
and The Kawarthas Home Builders Association and board
member of the Canadian Home Builders’ Association.
Subdivisions now have a mixed blend of housing.
“The housing continuum of a rental, then a starter
home, larger family home, and then downsizing when
the kids move out, means that people want to stay in
the same community as their housing needs change,”
says Northey. “This is resulting in communities of mixed
housing being designed. There is also a trend to highdensity
living in the downtown core, with infill projects.”

Chuck White, president of Rapid Lift Inc., has noticed
an upswing in construction in the Peterborough area
in the last couple of years.
“We’ve been involved in several large projects recently,
including the new Kingdon Timber Mart in Lakefield, the
Fairlife expansion to the Minute Maid Plant and the new
Shorelines Casino, to name a few,” says White. He has
operated his locally owned business for over 27 years,
providing rentals, sales, service and training of all types
of lifting equipment. They employ over 15 people at
their facility on Rye St. in Peterborough.
White is also is a board member of the Peterborough
Construction Association (P.C.A.). He says that the
general consensus is that most of its members have
had a very busy couple of years and it’s looking like the
trend may continue. White says that P.C.A. is a great
organization in which to network with others in similar
industries who have the aim of keeping business local.
“We all aim to keep business local,” says White.
“Keeping business local has a huge trickle-down effect.
If the general contractor on a construction project is a
local firm, then they will typically use the services of
other local contractors and suppliers. Conversely, if an
out-of-town general contractor is used, then we see
outside companies coming in to do the work along
with outside labourers, materials and equipment, with
the result that the money leaves the community. Using
local tradespeople really has an economic benefit on
the community.”

CHERNEY PROPERTIES
SERVING PETERBOROUGH FOR 80 YEARS
Cherney Properties’ tradition of excellent service began in the early 1930s, with Abraham
Cherney’s furniture store on Hunter Street. Then in 1937, his sons Myer and Harry
Cherney started a small furniture business on George Street which grew into a chain of
eight warehouse sale centres. In 1984, the furniture business was sold but the family held
on to the real estate.
Harry’s wife, Erica, and members from both Harry and Myer’s branches of the family
presided over the growth of the business into a modern enterprise which now comprises
14 properties, featuring a combination of office, residential, retail and industrial uses.
At the same time, Erica became a beloved community leader, with senior board roles at
Trent University and TVOntario.
Sadly, Erica passed away in 2016. However, the extended family is maintaining continuity
and the next generation of the family is excited to lead the business into the coming
decades.
When it comes to creating communities, Cherney Properties has the history, the team,
and the passion to make it happen, according to manager Kristi Dick, who has been with
the company for 20 years.
“To better reflect what we do as property managers, in 2017 we underwent a re-branding
and are now known as Cherney Properties”, she says.
With their own maintenance staff and their relationships with local trades, Cherney
Properties offers full-service to its clients. Dick says many people have been tenants with
the company for more than 20 years.

Northey says that even though there is a lot shortage in
Peterborough and the surrounding areas, the custom
home building and renovation industries are busier than
ever as people convert their cottages into year-round
residences for retirement, or upgrade their homes in
order to meet their needs.
Dean Findlay of the City of Peterborough says that during
last year and this year, there has been a lot of multilevel
construction units, such as townhouses, condos and
apartments being built. He agrees that there continues
to be a low inventory of single-family dwelling creation.
Demand for Residential Real Estate Strong
According to the Kawarthas Association of Realtors’
statistics, September’s home sales were up 40.5 percent
from a year ago, with 267 sales. Feedback from
agents indicates that there is more demand than there
are houses available on the market.
Alket Kulla says that residential real estate is up in
prices, about eight percent from January until now,
with the average price of homes going from $399,000
to $430,000.
“The volume of buyers coming out of the GTA has
increased,” he says. “About 50 percent of buyers are
from the GTA, attracted here because of the lower home
prices, with a mix of younger families and retirees. I
sold a home recently to a family from Scarborough.”
With the rise of house prices in the GTA, many people,
especially retirees are opting to live at their cottages.
The proximity to cottage country makes Peterborough a
very attractive destination for buyers and retirees based
on the quality of life one could expect, with average
prices lower than other cities in the Golden Horseshoe.
Not only is the interest and purchasing of cottages in
the Kawarthas on the rise, but the nearness of Kawartha
cottage area is driving home sales in Peterborough and
the surrounding areas. Many residents in the GTA sell
their homes there and move to Peterborough in order
to be closer to their cottages to the north, for instance
on Stoney Lake.
Peterborough and the surrounding area continue to be a
desirable location for homes and businesses alike.

You’ve probably seen some of the many buildings
constructed by Kloosterman General Contractors
around town without knowing it – Mastermind

Timber Mart in Lakefield. The company specializes in

“When we’re working on a project, we use many different
local trades, subtrades and supplies, not like out-of-town
contractors, who tend to use their out-of-town connections,”
says Rich Kloosterman, president. “Over our years in business,
we’ve developed good relationships with our local

During construction, Kloosterman employs dozens of
local sub-contractors for work that includes excavation,
foundations, structural steel, plumbing, electrical, framing,

come from local retailers.
Rich credits his sons Dan and John with the company’s
continuing success.
“My sons and I are a strong team who are dedicated to

because of our commitment to quality and seeing

Agriculture is important in the local economy
and is a major employer in the Peterborough
and the Kawarthas region. Farmers produce
a wide range of high-quality crops and animals
on their fertile farmland, ranging from beef and
dairy cows, sheep, goats, hog, poultry, fruit, maple syrup,
market-garden vegetables and crops such as hay, corn,
wheat, oats, barley, soybeans, and oil seeds.

June,” says Maloney. “This had a great impact on crops
with reduced yields.”
Maloney says that beef farmers have been affected by
export issues with the large markets of China and Saudi
Arabia, and that many are now seeking federal support
to get them through this time.

“The local agricultural community took part in a comprehensive
survey regarding business retention and
expansion,” says Robbins. “It was generated by the Ontario
Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, to
examine the current business landscape of agriculture.
From that, we have come up with a detailed action plan
to strengthen this sector.”
The Agritourism in Peterborough & the Kawarthas report
resulted from a process that brought together the
agriculture and food tourism communities.
“Agritourism can include a range of activities, such as
visiting a farmers’ market, joining an educational tour
of an operational farm, purchasing from a farm-stand,
Kawartha Choice FarmFresh is an initiative to promote
and sell local agricultural products, to support local farmers
by helping them sell directly to the customer, such as
restaurants, small retailers, and to end users at the farm
gate or at farmers’ markets.
One exciting event on the horizon is the International
Plowing Match and Rural Expo which will be taking place
in October next year at the Lindsay Exhibition grounds.
Approximately 80,000 visitors are expected, bringing
tourism dollars in the range of $25 million.

“Our Summer ’19 Roadshow was a great success,”

KFBG meetings generally take place five times a year on

The Greater Peterborough Chamber of Commerce helps

“The Chamber helps to strengthen local business in
a number of ways, from advocating for more efficient
regulation and better trade agreements, to making connections
that can help local businesses compete locally,
nationally and globally,” says Stuart Harrison, President
and CEO. “The Ontario Chamber of Commerce has operated
a very successful program called Export Market
Access, which helps businesses create and foster their
presence in foreign markets.”
Harrison says that there are a number of policy resolutions
at both the provincial and federal level with specific
recommendations on how to improve national and
international trade.
“We work closely with other organizations, including
the Kawartha Manufacturers Association, Peterborough
and the Kawarthas Economic Development (PKED), the
Innovation Cluster, and the Brazil Canada Chamber of
Commerce, to help make local connections of benefit
to local companies,” Harrison continues.
Traditional exporters like McCloskey International and
Quickmill remain strong globally, while smaller companies
like Walton Wood Farms are learning how to
compete at the retail level.
“Doing business online changes everything, making
it easier to erase borders, and solve distribution challenges,”
he says. “But the logistics of doing business
globally remains a tricky and important component of
any export strategy.”
Suzanne McCrimmon, Director of Business Development
at PKED says that medium and small manufacturers
are having a real resurgence in this community
and that over the past 12 months, they’ve been getting
much larger contracts.
“There are a lot of hidden gems in the Peterborough and
the Kawarthas manufacturing community that have a
much stronger global presence than most would think,”
she says.
This includes companies with a long-standing presence
in the community, such as Coca-Cola (Minute
Maid) who is building a $85M production facility for
Fairlife Ultrafiltered Milk; innovative startup businesses
such as Entomo Farms, a Norwood-based farm which
produces cricket protein as a sustainable food product
and became available as a President’s Choice product
in Loblaw stores; Harco Enterprises which produces
parts, pumps and components for the food and dairy
industry, shipping all over North America; and the global
aviation services company, Flying Colours, whose head
office is in Peterborough, but which also has operations
in the USA and Singapore.
Peterborough and the Kawarthas are being sought out as
a region that offers talent, access to markets, and a supportive
business ecosystem – factors that are necessary
in order for companies to grow nationally and globally.
The region continues to make its mark on the world
stage by attracting, retaining and supporting global
businesses, investors, and entrepreneurs in order to

Trades and Technology Centre contributes to this pool,
with a broad range of programs taught in the stateof-the-art
facility including welding, plumbing, HVAC,
carpentry and more. In a time of unprecedented technological
growth, Fleming embraces innovation to better
serve its students and produce graduates that meet the
demands of the rapidly-changing labour market.
One way the college embraces innovation is by actively
recruiting women to trades and technology to provide
the talent needed to fill the work force.
“Actively recruiting women to trades and technology
is more imperative than ever and at Fleming, our female
enrolment has grown, however, not as much as it
could, or should,” said Maureen Adamson, president of
Fleming College. “To be true community partners, we
have an obligation to train women and prepare them
for careers in trades and technology. We are partnering
with professional women who currently work in trades
and manufacturing, such as Rhonda Barnet, President
and CEO of Avit Manufacturing in Peterborough.”
Adamson says that there is a continuing need for skilled
workers, and that women can fill this huge gap.“We’re
speaking to high school students, and reaching out
through social media and hosting events at Fleming to
reach young women and show them that the trades are
a viable option for their careers,” continues Adamson.
Adults wishing to transition to other careers can look
to Fleming College for training. “We offer many continuing
education programs in project management,
how to grow a business, technical training, and more,
in person and online through us and Ontario Learn,
where those who are working can study at their own
pace in the evenings and on weekends,” she says. “We
are quite flexible and try to create schedules that work
for the students.”
Fleming College’s employment agency, Fleming CREW
at 1550 Lansdowne St. W. helps those who are looking
for work, not only students, but also those in the community.
“Fleming CREW helps those looking to transition to other
fields by suggesting training options and upgrading
their skills to enter different sectors,” she says. “Fleming
is where I started my studies and it has led to an
interesting career.”
Students graduating from Trent University are also
sought after because of their career readiness.
The university offers opportunities for students in their
programs to gain workplace experience, whether it’s in
education, nursing, social work, forensics, child and
youth programs, or environmental studies. They do
community-based research, internships, job shadowing,
conference presentation, and other work-related
activities, and the university is working towards having
an official, fully accredited co-op program with three
paid work terms in the near future.
Trent has traditionally been known for fostering soft
skills in students such as communication and writing
and that these skills, along with their professional
knowledge, contribute to the fact that 93 percent of
Trent students are employed after two years, according
to the Council of Ontario Universities. For the ninth
year, Maclean’s magazine has rated Trent as “Ontario’s
top undergraduate university.”
Through these educational institutions, the future workforce
continues to acquire the skills they need to succeed
in the changing world of the 21st century.

Manufacturing Sector Strong in
Peterborough and Surrounding Area
Peterborough’s manufacturing sector remains
strong into the 21st century with its involvement
in innovation, training programs, exporting
opportunities, diversifying customer bases,
establishing new markets, and addressing the skills gap
to ensure the future of the sector.
Most companies are seeing modest growth, with larger
firms becoming more automated, according to Sean
Dooley, Labour Market Information Analyst with the
Workforce Development Board.
“All of the local manufacturers are having difficulty
finding workers and are in need of those in the skilled
trades,” says Dooley. “Last October we went on an Open
Door tour of three local businesses: Siemens Milltronics
Process Instruments, Flying Colours and Avit Manufacturing
(formerly known as Steelworks Design) with
guidance counsellors from local schools and saw lots of
innovation and creativity in the high tech workplaces.
There continues to be a strong need for highly skilled
workers including engineers, machinists, CNT programmers,
and more, especially those who are flexible and
versatile who can change with the times and grow with
the technology.”
Dooley says that the current workforce is aging with
those who are nearing retirement, and that the current
situation will be compounded with employee shortages
in five to ten years.
“We have been taking part in STEAM (science, technology,
engineering, art and mathematics) events, which
are pushing to include women in the skilled trades,”
says Dooley. “Only two percent of all employees in the
construction industry are female – we are continuing to
try to eliminate barriers for women entering the skilled
trades.”
These efforts are important in attracting more young
women to the skilled trades in order to increase their
participation in the local and national manufacturing
sector and help to fill the shortage of skilled workers.
The Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters’ National
Campaign “We Can Do It” pledges to add 100,000 new
jobs for women in the sector in the next five years. This
work is being supported through federal funding and
The Status of Women Canada to help more woman have

The Kawartha Manufacturers’ Association was founded in
the late 1980s to increase the competitiveness and competencies
of manufacturers in the Kawarthas by providing
a forum for sharing information, ideas and resources;
promoting continuous improvement through education in
contemporary management and manufacturing practices;
improving the appreciation of manufacturing and its contribution
to regional quality of life; and improving links
between education, other manufacturers and government.
The group advocates on behalf of its members at all levels
of government to raise issues of concern to manufacturers.
Every sector is represented in the association, from those
producing large equipment such as McCloskey International
and Quick Mill, to custom design manufacturers
such as Avit Manufacturing, sporting equipment manufacturers,
the aerospace industry and small-to-medium sized
businesses such as Merit Precision Moulding and Harco.
Advanced technologies, which are becoming increasingly
important to manufacturers and educators, are coming
to downtown Peterborough in an upcoming makerspace,
according to Keaton Robbins, Corporate Communications
Officer, Peterborough & the Kawarthas Economic
Development (PKED).
“Plans are underway for the makerspace, which will
contain 3D printers, virtual reality tech, laser engravers
and other equipment at the Venture North building on
George Street, in a collaboration between the Greater
Peterborough Innovation Cluster and Fleming College.
The space, which will be available to Fleming students
and Innovation Cluster clients, will provide ‘experiential
learning’ and provide the materials needed for the jobs
of the future,” says Robbins.
Connections between educational institutions and manufacturing
companies are building momentum to service
the companies’ lack of employees and skillsets for the
jobs they need. One example is Fleming College working
with Flying Colours to develop courses tailored to
the aerospace sector, according to Suzanne McCrimmon,
Director of Business Development, PKED.
“The thing that I’m most excited about within the manufacturing
sector is how the educational institutions are
working with our local manufacturers to ensure they meet
the skills that are required to fill the needs of the jobs
that are available,” McCrimmon says.
The Kawartha Trades and Technology Centre at Fleming
College trains students to meet the ongoing demand for
work in the skilled trades. The building houses Fleming’s
trades and technology skills training programs, including
welding, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and HRAC,
which is heating, refrigeration and air conditioning. There
are traditional classrooms, lab and shop spaces and the
Skills Arena, a large open area that contains a threestorey
steel structure which simulates an actual job site,
with different programs on each level – the Fall Arrest
program is on the top level, plumbing is on the second
level, with electrical on the lower level. This design allows
for interaction between the trades as would reflect
a true construction site. Carpentry also takes place in the
Skills Arena. Skills that students learn are transferable
to project management in any manufacturing process.
Manufacturing continues to thrive in the area with the
establishment of high-tech businesses such as Noblegen
Inc., an advanced bioproducts manufacturer established
by Adam Noble and Dr. Andressa Lacerda, CapTrack,
which produces a portable device that manages refrigerated
inventory and caps specimen tubes for medical
laboratories, and PKA SoftTouch, which is a micro-needle
injection Technology that is safe, simple and pain-free.

Celebrates 50 Years

Peterborough Airport celebrated its 50th anniversary
with an impressive air show last September
featuring Canadian Forces Snowbirds and
a Canadian Armed Forces SkyHawks parachute
demonstration, with 9,000 people in attendance. At the
Saturday night gala, a plaque dedicated to this significant
milestone was unveiled.
The airport continues to attract manufacturing companies
with aviation connections on their serviced industrial
lands in a prime location. The Loomex Group operates the
airport on behalf of the City of Peterborough, the owner,
and is expanding into aerospace education and training
across Canada. The airport is home to 23 businesses in
general aviation, education and training, maintenance
repair, overhaul as well as other tenants who arrange
business and recreational flights from there.
Flying Colours Corp. is nearing completion on their new
100,000 sq. ft. buildings which will add 50 to 60 new
employees to the company. The first building is opening
mid November and the maintenance facility is opening
next February 2020. Serving the international business
aviation sector, Flying Colours does maintenance, repair
and overhaul services, completions, refurbishment, exterior
paint, engineering, and avionics installations and
upgrades.
Seneca College’s School of Aviation is continuing to grow.
Seneca is responsible for half of the landings and takeoffs
on the runways. The four-year Honours Bachelor of
Aviation Technology degree program now has between
150 to 175 students per year,

There are multiple ways to move around Peterborough
and the surrounding areas: walking, cycling,
travelling by bus, driving, flying and more.
Peterborough Transit of the City of Peterborough
operates out of the terminal at 190 Simcoe St.
There are now 12 routes, with express service to Trent
University and Fleming College. Handi-Van services are
available for those with mobility issues. Regular trips to
the GTA are offered by Greyhound Bus, operated by the
Liftlock Coach Lines, and the GO Bus to Oshawa which
connects with the GO train to Toronto.
The Highway 407 East Phase 2 project involving construction
to connect Highway 115 with the eastern portion
of the Highway 407 toll road is on schedule to be
completed by early 2020. Highways 401 and 407 will
also be connected with the 10-kilometre Highway 418
in Clarington and eight interchanges on 407. The new

highway is already bringing growth to Peterborough
and the surrounding areas, as well as the expectation
of faster trips to and from the GTA.
The Peterborough Airport can now accommodate larger
aircraft, such as the Boeing Business Jet 737 and other
narrow body aircraft such as the Airbus 320, to support
opportunities for existing and new businesses. In recent
years, chartered flights have travelled to New York City,
New Orleans, and other U.S. destinations. Under the
auspices of Carlson Wagonlit-G. Stewart Travel Services,
this season they are flying to Gander, Newfoundland,
Savannah, Georgia, New Orleans and Nashville.
Commercial and recreational pilots, guests, and business
owners are frequent users of the airport and the
50,000 annual aircraft movements include recreational,
commercial jet and turbine planes, medivac, charter,
cargo and training flights.

For fifty two years, the Paxton
group of companies, owned and
founded by Russ Paxton, has been

Monika says that with the 407 extension
soon to connect to the 115, along with
Peterborough being named the fastest
growing city in the country, that there will
still be a strong need in the local area for
commuters wanting fuel efficient, lowemissions
vehicles. She says the Honda

industry, according to the latest Green
House Gas (GHG) report by Environment
Canada.
Honda introduced the Clarity, a plugin
full electric hybrid, 22 months ago,
and also offers an Accord Hybrid, and
Insight hybrid in its current lineup. They
are committed to having 50 percent
of their lineup offered in a hybrid or
electric version by 2024 which will meet
the current government GHG standards.
They will focus on the battery, electric
vehicle by 2025 and beyond.
