John’s Jottings
Good afternoon everyone, welcome to The Martin & Conley Stadium.
Our visitors are Herne Bay. Welcome to their players, officials and supporters and, of course, to the
match officials.
Herne Bay are in a very respectable 5 th division in the league. They are on a run of three league victories
in a row. Last Saturday they achieved a 3-1 win at home to East Grinstead Town.
We played our last match in the group stages of the Velocity Trophy on Tuesday. Our visitors were
Cray Valley PM who did so well in The FA Vase last season. This helped them to have a very healthy
budget in this, their first season at this level. We played them in August and lost 3-1. They looked a
very good side and I thought then it would take a good side to beat them. The team they put out on
Tuesday showed a number of changes from their usual line up. The 3-2 win understated the opportunities
we had to get a number of goals. An excellent all-round performance but I must mention Joshua
Oliver and Enoch Adjei who terrorised the Cray defence with mazy runs. Also, Sid Sollis who picked
up two really good goals. We now wait to see how Sevenoaks Town get on against VCD Athletic next
week to see who tops our group. Sevenoaks Town need a point to go ahead of us and win the
group.
Tomorrow is remembrance Sunday and as we always do, we salute those who gave their lives in
conflicts by holding a one minutes silence. Thanks to Jim Pledger for arranging the standard to be
displayed at the ground today. Tomorrow at the war memorial in Remembrance Avenue Sittingbourne,
Derek Wakeling will take his place along with many others representing Sittingbourne organisations
and lay a wreath on behalf of the club.
Last Saturday our league match at Haywards Heath was postponed around mid-day, too late to stop
the team and many of our supporters from travelling. Annoying that it was postponed late in the day
but the rules of the FA at our level do not make it easy for teams to cancel earlier to prevent unnecessary
travel. It’s not good enough to look at the weather forecast and come to a sensible decision to
postpone the match on the information available. The League and the FA are far too inflexible on this.
Something that really needs to be looked at. Along with many of you, I can well remember in our
Southern League days two aborted long trips to Bashley that could have been avoided with common
sense rules being available.
We have a function here on Friday 22 nd November. There is a question and answer session with
manager, Chris Lynch. This will be followed by a “Race night”. Entry is £10.00, The proceeds will be
shared jointly between Sittingbourne Football Club and The Charlie Taylor fund. We want to have
regular functions here to support the club. We need you, the supporters to attend to make this worthwhile.
On the player front Tom Loynes came through his first game back after injury successfully. Ex Millwall
player, Harry Taylor, who signed for us but then went on to play for a Swedish professional side is
now back in England. We have applied for International clearance so he should soon be seen in our
colours.
It’s worth expanding on the Development match that Tom played in as part of his recovery programme.
What a game! Entertaining throughout. A 6-2 win over a team flying high towards the top of
the league shows what a good performance it was. The youngsters really are well worth watching.
Their fixtures are shown on our web site.
Next Saturday we visit Chichester City. Another long journey into Sussex. Let’s hope we do not have
weather related problem then. Our next home game is on Saturday 23 rd November when we
entertain VCD Athletic. We then have three away games on the trot. Stop Press: The Hastings Utd
home game has been rescheduled for Tuesday 10th December. JOHN

Hello everyone
From the Programme Editor
The programmes is now back to its usual 32 pages after the bumper FA Trophy copy and the 4
paqe of the Velocity Trophy, the programmes really are coming thick and fast.
As I wrote in the Velocity Trophy programme.
Tony Rickson has decided to stop doing the match reports and I would like to thank Tony for his
many excellent reports and website previews that he has done over many years.
I have included Bygones again in this programme and Paul Martin has Written an interesting
piece about a little known football supplement that was issued some years ago. The history of
programmes feature covers programmes during the 1930’s depression.
Good news: I have Sittingbourne FC pin
badges on sale today price £3.50 so if
you want one come up to the PA shed
where I should be.
Talking of the PA apologies for all the
trouble that we have had with the PA
since the power surge that Woodstock
suffered some two weeks ago. I am still
struggling to see what’s wrong so today
we will have the mega amp and speaker
on standby in case the system still isn't
working.
Following the power surge a fuse blew
in the amplifier and Radio spares quoted
February 2020 before they had stock
but I have found an international supplier, albeit not a cheap one, and hopefully the fuses will
arrive before today. Unfortunately though I’m not sure that the problem will be cured.
Finally congratulations to the management team and players - we are joint 9th in the Respect
table to 22/10/19, and 2nd in our league. An excerpt from the table is further on in this
programme.
C’mon you Brickies
Herne Bay— A Brief History
It could be argued that Herne Bay FC had their most successful season in their 125 th year. Having
been runners up two years running in the Kent League they secured the League Championship
with games to spare and had a superb run in the FA Vase becoming only the second Kent
League club to reach the semi-final stage where they went out to Northern League side West
Auckland Town over the two legs by the odd goal in seven (4-3.) Herne Bay were formed in 1886
and began life in the East Kent League, then having a short period in the Kent League before winning
the East Kent League in four successive years between 1902 and 1906 returning to the Kent
League as a result.
1953 saw the move to Winch’s Field. Over 1,000 spectators saw their first match at their new
home; a 2 - 2 draw against Tunbridge Wells Reserves in Kent League Division 2. Within two
years they lifted the Division 2 title, winning promotion to Division 1. In the 1957/58 season the
club won The Kent Amateur Cup beating Bromley 2 - 0 in the final. The following season saw the
Kent League fold and a move to the Aetolian League followed. The 1964/65 season saw another
move to Division 2 of the Athenian League, where they enjoyed several successful seasons followed
by promotion to Division 1 on winning Division 2 in 1970/71. A good run in the FA Cup saw
the Bay reach the 4th qualifying round, where they lost to the then ‘mighty’ Margate in front of a
record home attendance of 2,303.
At the start of the 1974/75 campaign the Club returned to the Kent League, and in the 1978/79
season they had good runs in the Cup competitions; defeating Welling United in the Kent Senior
Trophy and losing to Sheppey United in the Kent League Cup. The nineties saw the Club become
the most successful and consistent side in the Kent League, winning four Kent League titles. The
1996/97 season was without equal in the history of the Kent League. Within the space of four
weeks the Club won the Kent Senior Trophy, The Kent League Division 1 Cup and The Kent
League Championship. A unique treble!
A complete change of management and playing staff took place after the 1997-98 season, with
manager Tommy Sampson leaving the Club to take over the reins at Deal Town taking the majority
of the established first team players with him. That Deal Town side became the first Kent
League club to win the FA Vase at Wembley in the last ever Vase Final staged at the old stadium
in May 2000. The team had a fantastic 2000/01 season finishing runners-up in the Premier Division,
scored 93 goals in the league. Nick Denly (father of England cricketer Joe Denly) received
an unprecedented three manager of the month awards in his first full season at the helm.
However the 2001/02 season proved to be one of great disappointment. Exiting all cup competitions
at the first round stage and finishing a poor 7 th position in the league, despite being one of
the few teams to defeat league and cup double winners, Maidstone. A major grant was awarded
to provide new perimeter fencing and refurbishment of the changing facilities and these works
were complete prior to the start of the 2003/04 season when the club celebrated 50 years at
Winch’s Field. Former Gillingham and Maidstone player, Jason Lillis took over the reins for the
2004/05 season which proved to be very successful as Bay finished runners up in both the
League and League Cup, losing out to Ramsgate in both competitions.
Both the 2005/06 and 2006/07 seasons proved to be very disappointing and with several senior
players, and Jason, leaving the Club during the 2007/08 season, the Club built on the success of
Herne Bay Youth with the introduction of a number of very good young players into the first team
squad. This proved very beneficial and these players formed the basis of the first team squad for
this 2008/09 season. Along with some very influential experienced players introduced by new
manager, Barry Morgan, the Club had high hopes for a successful 2008/09 campaign. Unfortunately
a run of five defeats in six matches in October severely dented any promotion prospects.
Despite a twelve match winning sequence Bay fell just short at the end of the campaign and a defeat
in the final match saw them finish in 6th position in the League. The majority of the young
squad were retained for the 2009/10 season and with new sponsors there was a renewed optimism
within the Club. Continued on next page
Herne Bay — A Brief History Cont
With the appointment of Simon Halsey as Manager, Herne Bay FC pushed on to finish runners
up in the Kent League Premier Division two seasons running, the second of those going down to
the last few minutes of the last match where a goal at Tunbridge Wells gave Hythe Town the title.
But, in season 2011/12 Herne Bay swept all before them, narrowly missing out on a Wembley
appearance in the FA Vase and capturing the Kent League Premier Division title and promotion
to the Ryman League.
The 2013/14 season saw another new start for the Bay with Sam Denly (son of former manager
Nick Denly) taking up the managerial reigns following a disappointing first season in the Ryman
League where immediate relegation back to Step 5 was narrowly avoided. Achieved highest ever
finish and points total in the 2014/15 campaign in Herne Bay ‘s third season at this level. The
2015/16 season Bay faired even better, sitting in the play-off position for most of the season and
with a number of poor results in March Bay finally finished 8th, surpassing their highest finish in
the Isthmian league achieved in the previous season.
Retaining all the players for the 2016/17 season Bay expected to achieve a better position, but a
number of poor results in the early part of season set the tone for the rest of the campaign. Bay
hovered around relegation zone until late January. The player's budget was cut and immediately
there was an improvement in results. A ten match unbeaten run saw Bay climb away from the
relegation zone with an eventual finish in 17th place. Sam Denly resigned at the end of the season
and all of the players left the club. New managers, professional players, John Embery and
Jermaine Darlington, well known to Brickies fans as the joint managers of their development
squad, were appointed. They built a totally new side comprising, a large number of very talent
young players, many from the Brickies, along with some experienced older players.
This is the second time in the last 17 years that a totally new side has been formed and to blood
these youngsters into what always proves to be a very competitive level of football. the club were
delighted with a mid table finish in 12th place.
Embery and Darlington departed the club after suffering abuse on social media, the club saying
that “social media trolls have won the day.” Anthony Deer took the team for the next game. Nick
Gearing took the managers job in May 2019 but a new consortium headed by now Chairman
Stuart Fitchie released Gearing before he had even taken a coaching session or managed a
game and appointed ex Canterbury City Manager Ben Smith who is the current manager.
Buglione putting two excellent chances
wide before being substituted for
Ullathorne with McRobert playing up front
with Daniels. This had an impact and
Sittingbourne looked livelier in attack. Paul
Haylock limped off injured and striker Lee
Thompson replaced him.
Twenty five years ago Sittingbourne were
desperately trying to pull away from the
drop zone along with Corby, Gravesend,
Atherstone and Gresley who were the visitors
to Central Park for a Beazer Homes
Southern League encounter.
Lack of goals was the biggest concern
which was a puzzle given the players in
the squad. Martin Buglione and Lee
McRobert were
both proven goal
scorers with their
previous clubs. The
pair had cost
Against Gresley Sittingbourne enjoyed
one of their better performances, dominating
much of the match, working hard and
The second half continued the same with
Daniels created a great chance when he
raced through the Gresley defence but his
shot on goal was saved by Aston the
Gresley goalkeeper.
As both defences tired there was an
increase in scoring opportunities however
true to form Sittingbourne failed to convert
them into goals.
The game finished 0-0 and it was a case of
two points dropped
however when you
are in a relegation dog
fight any point is a
good point.
Manager John Ryan
would have been
pleased with the performance
of Lloyd
Hume who was
improving with each
match he played.
Seventeen year-old
defender Phil Walker made his league
debut and left back Scott Saunders,
signed from Thamesmead Town was
beginning to shine and grow in confidence.
Sittingbourne: Ebbli, Haylock, Walker,
Beard, Saunders, Strouts, Bloomdale,
Hume, McRobert, Buglione, Daniels.
Subs: Ullathorne, Thompson.
Next up at Central Park was mid-table
Halesowen Town. After the draw with
Gresley Sittingbourne must have been
optimistic.

Paul Martin— “Soccer Review”
If you are old enough, like me, to have watched football in 1965
and that football included visits to Football League grounds (or a
few non-league grounds) you were quite likely to have bought a
programme. If you had, you may have been surprised to find an
insert in that programme, either stapled in the centre or just loose.
As a new initiative, a football magazine, originally named “Soccer
Review” was sold to those clubs who wished to participate at a
minimal price with the intention of increasing programme sales and
passing on general Football League information. I have a few copies
from that first season and I must admit they are quite dull, being
in black and white and not particularly
interesting. There is a “team
of the week” and a letters page
which reflects the attitudes to football
at that time.
As there were about 38 editions
in that first season and
clubs had only about 21 or
23 home games (plus perhaps
some home cup ties) it
was fairly impossible to collect
a full set although they
have cropped up in Reserve programmes.
With the World Cup coming up at
the end of that season, what were the big talking points? A “war”
between the FA and the Football League, wider scope for substitutions,
professional referees, football on television, signing on
fees, illegal payments and hooliganism. Not much has changed.
For the 1966/67 season, the
name was changed to Football
League Review and the editions
were slightly more professional
in appearance. For
the 1972/73 season, the name
was changed again to League
Football and lasted as a publication
until midway through
the 1974/75 season when economics
forced its closure. Altogether,
I reckon there were
over 350 editions and, sadly, I do have most of them!
A series of articles by the author of the book ‘A History and Guide to Football Programmes’
describing how programmes have changed over a century-and-a-half of Association
Football. These articles will appear throughout the season in the Sittingbourne FC
programme.
Top Club Programmes Through the Depression
The dreadful, debilitating economic Depression of the 1930’s had little impact on the style and
standard of football programmes. Clubs continued to produce fairly substantial 1d or 2d issues,
and they appeared to include as many advertisements as before, suggesting that programme
revenue did not suffer the same fate as the rest of the economy. In terms of the quality and
quantity of issues, the advances of the previous decade were consolidated and programmes
changed little between 1930 and 1939.
Pre-war programmes from the North East of England are notoriously difficult to obtain today, but
the Sunderland 1930’s programmes were substantial 12-page productions with a splash of red
ink on the front cover of an otherwise black-and-white issue. In common with most clubs at the
time, there were no match details on the cover, simply the name of the club and a crest or logo;
but the major part of the front page was devoted to an advertisement. These, presumably expensive,
adverts were invariably for well-known local industries or enterprises. In Sunderland’s case
it was for Vaux Beers.
Newcastle United also issued an excellent pre-war programme, comprising 16 pages, printed
dark grey on white paper. A sketch of two footballers shared club details at the top of the cover,
which was dominated by an advert for the Sunday Sun newspaper.
The Sheffield clubs issued handsome programmes of contrasting styles. Wednesday abandoned
their long-standing small size with team lines on the front, to produce a splendid large page edition
with a striking sketch of Hillsborough’s main stand on the front cover. Sheffield United favoured
a smaller size, in 16 pages, with red and white stripes on the cover and an aerial sketch
of Bramall Lane showing the old cricket pitch and pavilion.
Fairly brief programmes were favoured by some of the top clubs. For example, West Ham and
Tottenham shared a similar style, with a very large folded sheet. There were few if any adverts,
type-size was very small with plenty of reading crammed in, and the price was an undemanding
1d; but it remains a surprise to see such prominent clubs issue such brief programmes. Chelsea
were hardly better - albeit they put their name to 8 pages. In the capital, it was Arsenal who produced
by far the most impressive pre-war programme, with a 16 page edition that sported a deep
red card cover advertising Highbury’s enviable local transport links.
Kent Senior Cup
Sittingbourne (1) 1 (Caney-Bryan 9) Ramsgate
(1) 1 (Miller 25), Attendance: 77
Ramsgate won a penalty shoot-out 5-4
Keep practising the penalties, Sittingbourne,
for you never know when they’ll come in
handy.
This was the third penalty shoot-out they’ve
had this season, and after winning one and
losing one in the Velocity Trophy, this one in
the Kent Senior Cup went to sudden death
before Sittingbourne were beaten.
They’d gone in front, too, with confident pens
by youngsters Declan Pearse and Josh Oliver,
Ramsgate’s first attempt sailing out of the
ground. Sid Sollis saw his spot-kick turned onto
the post, but then keeper Jordan Perrin and
Jason Fregene kept Sittingbourne ahead by
scoring theirs.
Ramsgate were also on target, though, which
meant the shoot-out ended 4-4. Into sudden
death and when Sittingbourne’s Kane Phillip
chipped onto the bar, Ramsgate just needed
to convert theirs to go through.
A disappointing end for Sittingbourne, who put
in a decent performance throughout and
mainly dominated the second half without
converting their chances.
With the team showing four changes from Saturday’s
exciting win over South Park in the FA
Trophy, Sittingbourne took an early lead
through Johan Caney-Bryan.
Just like on Saturday the opening was carved
out down the right wing, Enoch Adjei firing in a
cross that was blocked. But only as far as
Caney-Bryan and he confidently side-footed it
inside the far post.
The same player could have made it two
when he got clean through, but the keeper
came out to save, and Oliver went close when
he cut in on his right foot from the left wing,
looking for all the world like Marcus Rashford
the night before, only to fire narrowly wide.
Ramsgate equalised midway through the half
when a corner was half-cleared to Miller, and
he calmly avoided one challenge, before
shooting accurately into the far corner.
Sittingbourne took control after the interval
and Sollis had his shot from a narrow angle
tipped away, before his chip was brilliantly
headed out at the far post by defender Barrett
under pressure from Caney-Bryan. Both players
got hurt in the process and had to be substituted.
Ramsgate got back into the game near the
end but Lex Allan stopped the dangerous Miler
with a great block, and Ben Fitchett, who
otherwise had an excellent game, conceded
an injury time free-kick right on the edge of his
own area that came to nothing.
And so to penalties, and defeat means Sittingbourne
won’t be celebrating the 10th anniversary
of winning this competition by repeating
the feat this season.
BetVictor Isthmian League South East Division
Sittingbourne (1) 1 (Caney-Bryan 51) Hythe
Town (0) 0, Attendance: 217
No manager gets every substitution right, but here
was one that won the game for Sittingbourne. Soon
after coming on, Kane Phillip brilliantly ran from his
own half to set up the only goal of the game for onfire
Johan Caney-Bryan, his third of a highly successive
week.
This was Sittingbourne’s fourth game in succession
in which they’ve been unbeaten over 90 minutes,
and it was also their first home league win of the
season.
The ingredients are undoubtedly beginning to gel. A
front player who’s scoring goals, a midfield prepared
to run their socks off, a determined and accomplished
back four who hate conceding goals, and a
cool-as-cucumber goalkeeper in the form of his
young life.
This was by no means the best game of the season,
but what an important win for Sittingbourne over a
Hythe team who did the double over them last season.
Nathan Elder, who swapped the assistant manager
role at Sittingbourne for the same job at Hythe, must
have been left wondering if he’d made the right
choice.
His new team have a lot of experience, but perhaps
that also slowed them down and made it hard for
them to match the youthful exuberance of Sittingbourne.
It was a beautiful autumnal afternoon at Woodstock,
in front of a noisily supportive largest home crowd of
the season, and the game had a dramatic start
when Tommy Fagg was booked in the very first minute
for a trip. 89 minutes is a lot for any hardtackling
midfielder to hold out without getting in trouble
again, let alone Fagg who never backs out of a
challenge. Hearts were in mouth when Hythe were
very quick to point out another first half foul by him,
but he escaped a second yellow and was good as
gold after that.
There was more drama in just the second minute
when Caney-Bryan got clean through on skipper
Chris Webber’s pass, but his finish lacked guile and
the keeper was able to tip it over.
Hearts were in mouth again for Sittingbourne on 20
minutes when keeper Tom Benham hurt his ankle
and looked as if he wouldn’t be able to carry on.
Striker Sid Sollis even had his shirt off in apparent
readiness to take over, but Benham opted to soldier
on, even though he had to give up
taking goal-kicks after that.
Sittingbourne’s ambitious start seemed to fade a bit
as they lost possession too easily with attempted
long passes to get behind what they must have assumed
was a Hythe back line lacking in pace.
The visitors had a great chance to take the lead after
36 minutes only for Simpson to head over from
close range, and Sittingbourne manager Chris
Lynch decided to change things a few minutes later,
withdrawing Josh Oliver and opting for the extra
pace of Phillip out wide.
There was a moment of controversy just before halftime
when Benham kicked the ball out after a Hythe
player went down dramatically, seemingly desperately
injured, and then they refused to give the ball
back from the throw-in.
The first few minutes of the second half decided the
game. Benham made an excellent save from Tom
Carlton – son of watching former Sittingbourne player
Paul – and then repeated the act as a close
range header came in from the corner.
And then Sittingbourne won it. Hythe were caught
on the back foot unsuccessfully appealing for a freekick,
and Phillip raced up the field with the ball. He
exchanged passes with Sid Sollis, got a lucky break
when the ball came back to him off a Hythe player,
and still at full speed crossed low to the near post.
Caney-Bryan anticipated beautifully to get there just
in time to score from close range, though he was
clattered in the process and had to go off injured.
That’s all three goals for Sittingbourne in the past
week for Caney-Bryan, who’s terrific
at finishing instinctively like this.
Hythe captain Collin had a couple of chances to
equalise but headed one of them over and saw the
other one stopped by Benham, and Sittingbourne
held out well. Is letting in late goals now just a distant
memory from earlier in the season?
All of the back four were excellent, with Jason Fregene
having another storming game at left-back
where he’s proved a great asset for Sittingbourne
this season.
