A well-known face within the
community, Ella Bella is one of
the dynamic ladies behind the
well-established Miss Earth South
Africa, a programme that aims to
empower young South African
women to create a sustainable
difference in protecting our
environment.
We caught up with the ‘green’ influencer to see what
she has been up to.
Behind her gorgeous smile is a woman who has a
passion for the environment, hoping to influence
and guide young minds to follow a greener lifestyle.
These finalists will be implementing their own
projects in local schools and communities. We have
partnered with the Department of Environmental
Affairs on their Good Green Deeds campaign
encouraging people to do one good deed a day;
either at work, home or at school. Our women
empowerment programmes will also focus on
educating members of our society to change their
heads, hearts and hands to be able to do more good
green deeds,” said Ella Bella.
“Having a passion for something is so important. It’s
your passion that carries you through hard times.
Having a passion to succeed is what makes things
worthwhile. It makes the hard work not seem too
hard. My sister Catherine, director of Miss Earth South
Africa, and I have such a great working relationship.
We are very different in personality and strengths,
but because we are so different we complement
each other in the business world. Over the years
we have learned to use our strengths to grow the
opportunities around us and lean on each other
when we need to.”
But enough about business. The last time we
checked in with Ella Bella she was recently married to
Mark. Now she has become mother to a little
boy, Luke.
How is life with a toddler?
“As a young girl I always wanted to be a mom and
when I realised I was pregnant it was a blessing
from God. When it happened it was a blessing

from the Lord. Our little boy Luke brings us so
much joy and laughter. People always warned
us our lives would change; and our lives have in
so many ways. It’s not just our free time which
is filled up by this little human, but our way
of thinking has changed, our understanding
of being safe has changed, the things we
have been doing all our life have changed to
accommodate the needs of this little human we
have been entrusted with to nurture and protect
for all the days of his life.
“Little Luke is not so little any more, he is now
16 months old and walking. He is so quick
on his feet and he manages to get into every
cupboard, every drawer and has his own idea of
where shoes should go. It’s lots of fun and hard
work, but we love it,” Ella Bella added.
Your hubby and Luke
“I love watching the two of them. The love and
happiness I see in my husband’s eyes is priceless.
When they play my heart skips a beat from time
to time watching how he throws Luke in the
air, or hangs him upside down, but I guess boys
play differently. I love the shrill of excitement
from Luke when ‘daddy’ gets home and he can
hear Mark’s car coming up the driveway. Mark
really helps a lot at home; from doing the dishes
to changing nappies. It’s a partnership. I heard
somewhere that if each person gives 110 per
cent to the relationship you can’t go wrong.”
Share the special bond you had with
your dad
“Unfortunately my father passed away. He
suffered from Alzheimer’s disease for over 15
years, but mostly suffered in silence trying not
to be a burden on us. He was a real people’s
person. He always made people laugh with
his naughty jokes (which often embarrassed
us). He was kind and enjoyed working in the
garden, making a braai and going for a ‘goof’
in the swimming pool he built. He was warm
to every soul who crossed his path. He used to
always tease my mom with tickles or he would
tell everyone that it was him who had cooked.
My mom just looked at him lovingly, not saying
a word.”
Share the special memories you had with
your dad
“When he was already sick we were lying on
my bed chatting about frivolous things. He
turned to me and said, ‘My girl you must find a
man who will love you and make you happy. If
you don’t I will not be happy and you will not
be happy – okay?’ He made me agree to this
and now years later I can say with all honesty
I have chosen a man who does not only make
me happy, but one I know my dad would have
approved of.”
What is the biggest lesson you have learned
from him?
“To be kind, always be the first to smile and offer
a kind gesture, it costs nothing but can have the
biggest impact on someone who is having a
bad day.”
Apart from your busy schedule, what do you
enjoy doing? Do you have any hobbies?
“I was enthralled by Ken Follett’s Pillars of the
Earth and now I’m currently reading the follow
up, Column of Fire. I blame my midwife for this
obsession! I love having picnics and going out
to enjoy nature. Rietvlei Zoo Farm, Mondeor
River and Klipriviersburg Nature Reserve have
awesome spots for some time out with the
family. I enjoy going to movies and getting the
biggest box of popcorn possible but I have
to be there early as I can’t miss watching the
trailers.
“When I’m at home I have to admit I’m a TV
addict! I absolutely love Game of Thrones, How
to get away with Murder, Isidingo, The River,
Days of Our Lives, Fixer, Grey’s Anatomy, This Is
Us, A Good Wife and A Good Fight – actually I
like too many series and movies!!!
“I have a scrap book waiting to be filled with
romantic trips with my husband and all the
adventures when travelling with my sister and
brother and of course pictures of Luke and his
first year.”
What is your vision for the future?
“To see South Africa prosper. Everyone who
feels the beat of Africa in their heart, may
you prosper and be fulfilled with the love of
South Africa and her Rainbow people. I hope
to grow the Miss Earth Legacy into something
young women aspire to join and which will
be implemented in schools throughout South
Africa, with gardens and recycling systems at
every school. Instead of clean-ups we should
be planting trees and vegetable gardens. We
should all mentor a young boy or girl to help
develop our society. My vision is for climate
change to be slowed down and for people to
care so much more about the planet and their
impact on the world. In the meantime I’ll just
keep on doing my best to live a ‘greener life’
and to make this all come true.”

The winner and four runners-up will have to

indestructible and almost never
without flowers. We love soft pink,
the colour of a flamingo, which
is the other name for anthurium.
Plants like a warm room and bright
light, but not direct sunlight. Let the
soil dry out moderately between
watering. If the leaves turn yellow
(but not brown and withered), this
may be a sign of overwatering.

Winter growing
Step-by-step planting for the Winter season.
We’re planting: Pansy ‘Halloween’ because it is not
your usual pansy, and the name says it all. The extra-large
flowers are pure black and lightly perfumed. A real novelty
for the garden, it stands out if planted alongside other bright
orange pansies. For winter to spring flowering, plant in full
sun to bring out the black shades. The large plants (20cm high
and wide) show up well in containers, or as an accent plant in
garden beds, with spring bulbs, or other bright winter annuals.

• Love lilies? Plant bulbs from now until
August, in slightly acid soil that drains well.
• Water once a week and fertilise once
a month. Spring flowering bulbs should
not be allowed to dry out; water for forty
minutes every four days.
• Dead head poppies, calendula, and
sweet peas to encourage new flowers. Cut
down cannas and dahlias. Tidy up other
perennials. Shrubs and trees can be lightly
trimmed to let in more sun.
• This is the best month to move or plant
summer-flowering shrubs, rose bushes,
perennials and even small trees.
• Repot outdoor container plants.
• Water lawns once a month and fertilise
once a month in frost free subtropical areas.
Remove weeds by hand or with a targeted
weed killer.
• Protect tender or semi-tender plants
from frost with frost guard cloth.
• Spray preventatively for conifer aphid
with an organic insecticide but make sure
that the spray reaches the inner trunk and
foliage. Insecticide granules can also be
sprinkled around the base of the conifer.

Leaving footprints
Dario Gouveia, founder of Sole2Sole, has up to date collected 34 000 pairs of shoes and are still
going strong. We visited this youngster at their family home in Meyersdal.
We were in awe when Dario showed us
their garage filled with shoes, and that
is only a small portion of what has been
collected. He started Sole2Sole two years
and three months ago and with the help
of his mom Zita, dad Mario, sister Liana,
granny Salome, family, friends and all
those who have donated footwear, the
unbelievable grand total of 34 000 pairs
has been reached!
“I never ever thought we’d get to this
amount. I’m so thrilled. I can’t think that
from one pair of shoes given to one small
boy begging in the street, we’ve
managed to collect and distribute to
so many people.”
Over the past two years Sole2Sole has
donated shoes to well over 100 places of
need. “Our shoes have no colour,” said
mom Zita, “we give to everyone we can,
who needs them.”
After Cyclone Idai hit Mozambique a few
weeks ago and so many people were
left homeless with absolutely nothing,
Sole2Sole packed 1 100 shoes and
dropped them off at Steyn City, in the
north of Johannesburg, where lots of other
donations of clothing, blankets and shoes
were being organised to get to
the homeless.
“This is very close to our hearts,” said Zita,
“Dario’s grandfather was born and lived in
Mozambique, and we really wanted to do
something to help.”

“At Rosemarie Schools we strive to
stimulate our children to achieve every one
of the abovementioned criteria. A lack of
stimulation can result in developmental
delays and can often be frustrating for the
child”, said René.
The following areas of stimulation are
crucial to the development of a child:
Hairdressers, chefs and doctors is where
children learn to interact in groups or pairs.
Babies learn to share toys, they learn to
watch and enjoy their crib mates’ antics.
Soon they start playing imaginary games,
where they imitate their moms going
shopping, they use fantasy corners to
become hairdressers, codes and doctors.
They are stimulated to take turns in being
the client and the hairdresser, they role
play taking animals to the vet and while
they
play, their vocabularies and social
interaction grow.
Gross motor development is stimulated
by changing the outdoor play area.
Pre-schoolers are encouraged to move
according to the theme of the week.

establishing a functional pencil grip.
The pre-school child, referring to babies
from 3 months to Grade R pupils are
stimulated to perform perceptual skills
in many ways. Apart from sensory
integration, we apply ourselves to teach
children to listen by reading stories and
asking questions. The story is then acted
and we work on emotions
and feelings.
“The answer to the what, why and how of
stimulation simply cannot be addressed in
one article. The importance of stimulation,
may however not be underestimated”,

Subject Choices
Grade Nine learners will soon have the exciting task of selecting the subjects they want to pursue for the next
three years, on which they will be tested during the final exams.
Because of the withdrawal of the designated
subject list by the Department of Basic Education
last year, they are truly spoilt for choice, but this
also means they need to be more focused than
ever, because their decision now can have farreaching
and even life-altering consequences, an
education expert says.
“It’s a tough ask of teenagers to make a
commitment now which will affect their ability to
gain access to higher education and potentially
their qualification of choice in four years’ time,
when many are not even yet sure what they want
to study after school,” says Dr Gillian Mooney,
Dean: Academic Development and Support at The
Independent Institute of Education, SA’s largest
private higher education provider.
“It is therefore very important for them to firstly
realise the gravity of the potential consequences
of the choices they make now, and then, to really
consider the strategy which will keep as many
doors as possible open down the line,” she says.
Mooney explains that Grade Nines are required to
select at least seven subjects on which they will
be tested in Matric, four of which are compulsory:
Home Language, Second Language, Maths or
Maths Literacy, and Life Orientation. The balance
then, are elective subjects, and should be chosen
carefully.
“Because there are no longer so-called designated
subjects, learners may be tempted to choose
subjects they envision will be comparatively easier
than others, in order to gain the best possible
Matric marks,” she says.
“However they need to consider not only which
subjects will ensure they get admission to higher
education, but also which subjects will allow
them admission into their chosen qualification. If
they don’t yet know what they want to do, they
need to make sure that their choice positions
them well to access a wide range of qualifications.
Their selection must also ensure they can claim a
well-rounded education upon completion of their
schooling.”
Mooney says Grade Nines – with the help of their
parents or guardians, and ideally even with the
help of career and student counsellors from a
respected higher education institution - need to
carefully weigh up their various options, and the
various combinations of subjects that are suitable
for them.
“The aim is to choose those subjects that will
leave you with a wide range of options, while at
the same time also positioning you optimally to
perform well in your last three years of school,”
she says.
“Your subject choice must enable you to
demonstrate proficiency in critical thinking and
numeracy, and particularly important is the choice
between Maths and Maths Literacy, as many
university courses still require core maths,” she
says.
Choosing three relatively easy subjects as
electives might help a learner achieve good
aggregate marks, but their options will be limited
if their education doesn’t incorporate those
subjects that teach logic and argumentation,
and scientific and reasoning skills as found in for
instance History, Accountancy and Maths, and
Physical and Life Sciences, says Mooney.
“So it would not be wise to go for the shortterm
gain of spectacular marks, instead of
implementing a long-term vision which will
support an holistic academic development, as the
impact on the future student’s studies – which
require higher reasoning than what is expected at
school - will be significant, even if they do qualify
for study,” she says.
“The best way to future-proof your study options
and therefore career choices, as well as your
ability to be resilient and adapt to currently
unpredictable changes in the world of work - is
to get as solid a grounding during your last three
years of school as possible, even if it is going to be
more challenging.
“Before making your choice, make an effort
to gain as much information about admission
requirements for potential career paths from a
wide range of higher education institutions, and
then to work back to ensure that your subjects will
enable you to enter those fields. Very importantly
however, ensure that your choices reflect a wide
enough range to develop an extended skills base
which will serve you well into the future.”

We’ve got some great news to share.
We came across a math programme
where moms and dads can help their
children improve their maths skills
through games and activity sheets.
Maths 4 Mommies or Daddies is a fun,
interactive facilitation programme for
parents who would like to help their
child learn mathematics. The programme
by Liezel Blom, founding partner of SA
Teacher, helps children from Grade RR up
to Grade Six with mathematics.
Liezel has more than 21 years’ experience
in teaching and development. She is
also the creator of the mathematics
material. “The sessions focus on ways
that adults can encourage and assist their
children in understanding and enjoying
mathematics,” said Liezel.
Her main focus is on sharing her extensive
knowledge with children and parents and
uplifting the community of Alberton. “This
is not only for children who struggle with
mathematics, but also for children who
excel in mathematics.”
All the material for the course is provided
at the sessions, which also include fun
activities to do with the children at
home. Maths 4 Mommies or Daddies is
conducted once a month for one year.
Facilitation is conducted in a group
environment by a head facilitator who, in
this case, is Liezel.
Help a child learn mathematics
Liezel created Mingcele Africa (NPO
number 168-973), a non-profit
organisation, where people who want
to support her cause can donate money
towards a child who needs help with
mathematics.
“One of the biggest struggles for me is to
find a set location as my house is too small.
It would really help if we can get a place
that is big enough for the current group
and a bigger group as then I can take in
more children and parents,” she said.
