Mission Statement<br />
<strong>Varsity</strong> <strong>Monthly</strong> <strong>Thumb</strong> Area (“VMTA”) is dedicated to the recognition and advancement <strong>of</strong> high<br />
school athletics in Michigan’s <strong>Thumb</strong> region. VMTA, created in 2014, is a monthly sports magazine,<br />
which displays achievements <strong>of</strong> local high school athletes, primarily through high quality photography.<br />
At the heart <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Varsity</strong> <strong>Monthly</strong> mission is the support <strong>of</strong> local students, and our high school athletic<br />
departments, in an effort to preserve physical health, competition through sport, and the development <strong>of</strong><br />
strong, well-rounded future leaders. Our various pr<strong>of</strong>essional photographers attend games and/or events<br />
in each <strong>of</strong> the 17 communities that we cover, each month. We then display these photographs <strong>of</strong> as many<br />
athletes as possible, through our monthly publication, website and facebook page. VTMA highlights a<br />
male and female standout athlete each month on our “Players <strong>of</strong> the Month” page. We are joined in this<br />
awesome mission by a wealth <strong>of</strong> local businesses who support our youth by advertising in our publication,<br />
on the page/s <strong>of</strong> their selected locality. The magazine would not be possible without these great<br />
supporters and ask that you keep our advertising customers in mind for your local business needs. We<br />
display the advertisements in the magazine, on our website and on our facebook page to provide them<br />
with maximum exposure. We also award a customer each month with our “Advertiser <strong>of</strong> the Month,”<br />
providing local business owners with an opportunity to reflect on the impact <strong>of</strong> high school athletics in<br />

Players Of The Month<br />
Brendan Hamilton was an all-Greater <strong>Thumb</strong> West selection at tight end last year. But he<br />
will not be an all-league tight end this year. That’s because the Cass City senior has found a<br />
new position on <strong>of</strong>fense, and it’s paying dividends for the Red Hawks football team – big time.<br />
Hamilton has helped Cass City blast out <strong>of</strong> the gate, rolling up the yardage as the squad’s go-to<br />
running back, and leading the Red Hawks to a 3-0 record and No. 6 ranking<br />
in the state.<br />
The wins haven’t been pushovers. Cass City beat returning play<strong>of</strong>f<br />
qualifier Flint Hamady 54-30, 2016 Division 7 semifinalist Ubly 30-16, and<br />
Brown City 54-30 in Week 3. Hamilton has put up monster numbers in each<br />
win. He has 559 yards rushing already, and has scored nine touchdowns<br />
(145 yards, 4 TDs against Hamady; 187 yards, 2 TDs against Ubly; 227<br />
yards, 3 TDs against Brown City).<br />
On defense, however, Hamilton is still his ball-hawking self. A<br />
second-team all-conference selection a year ago, Hamilton is also making<br />
a splash this year at defensive back, recording over 30 tackles in the<br />
three games, highlighted by a 14-tackle effort on Sept. 8 against Brown<br />
City. The Red Hawks are flying high a third <strong>of</strong> the way through the <strong>2017</strong><br />

football season. Last year, Cass City made the play<strong>of</strong>fs with a 6-3 record, but it could have very<br />
easily been a season that ended with a perfect record. Cass City lost each game by six points or<br />
less, and had a lead in the final two minutes <strong>of</strong> all three <strong>of</strong> them. This year, Hamilton, and his<br />
Cass City teammates, are looking to put last season’s hard luck behind them.<br />
Frankenmuth’s Hannah Loucks always tries to get a leg up on the competition. And at the<br />
first Tri-Valley Conference East cross country jamboree this year, she got several legs up on the<br />
rest <strong>of</strong> the field. Loucks has started her season in style, and is looking to mark her mark as the<br />
TVC-East’s top female runner in <strong>2017</strong>.<br />
On Sept. 12, at the Birch Run-hosted event, Loucks easily dashed to victory, beating her<br />
nearest opponent, teammate Gabbie Michael, by nearly a full minute.<br />
The Eagles took five <strong>of</strong> the top six spots at the meet, scoring 16<br />
points (cross country is like golf, the lowest score wins), to finish<br />
ahead <strong>of</strong> second-place Birch Run (55). It was Loucks’ second win, and<br />
fourth top-three finish, in the Eagles’ first four meets. At the 11-<br />
team Marauder Invitational (in St. Johns), Loucks took first place in<br />
a time <strong>of</strong> 19:26.5, setting a new personal record. Loucks took third in<br />
her other two races, the 19-team Birch Run Early Invitational, and<br />
the 13-team Bret Clements Bath Invitational.<br />
Loucks has qualified for the Division 3 cross country state<br />
finals the past two years, placing 60th as a sophomore and 28th last<br />
year. She also stars for the Frankenmuth track and field team, qualifying<br />
for the Division 3 state meet in the 1,600-meter run, 3,200-meter<br />
run and 3,200-meter relay in each <strong>of</strong> the last two years.<br />
