Mission Statement<br />
<strong>Varsity</strong> <strong>Monthly</strong> <strong>Thumb</strong> Area (“VMTA”) is dedicated to the recognition and advancement <strong>of</strong> high<br />
school athletics in Michigan’s <strong>Thumb</strong> region. VMTA, created in 2014, is a monthly sports magazine,<br />
which displays achievements <strong>of</strong> local high school athletes, primarily through high quality photography.<br />
At the heart <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Varsity</strong> <strong>Monthly</strong> mission is the support <strong>of</strong> local students, and our high school athletic<br />
departments, in an effort to preserve physical health, competition through sport, and the development <strong>of</strong><br />
strong, well-rounded future leaders. Our various pr<strong>of</strong>essional photographers attend games and/or events<br />
in each <strong>of</strong> the 17 communities that we cover, each month. We then display these photographs <strong>of</strong> as many<br />
athletes as possible, through our monthly publication, website and facebook page. VTMA highlights a<br />
male and female standout athlete each month on our “Players <strong>of</strong> the Month” page. We are joined in this<br />
awesome mission by a wealth <strong>of</strong> local businesses who support our youth by advertising in our publication,<br />
on the page/s <strong>of</strong> their selected locality. The magazine would not be possible without these great<br />
supporters and ask that you keep our advertising customers in mind for your local business needs. We<br />
display the advertisements in the magazine, on our website and on our facebook page to provide them<br />
with maximum exposure. We also award a customer each month with our “Advertiser <strong>of</strong> the Month,”<br />
providing local business owners with an opportunity to reflect on the impact <strong>of</strong> high school athletics in<br />

Players Of The Month<br />
The girls’ high school basketball rankings won’t be out until the new year. But it’s<br />
a good bet that Sandusky will begin this year where it left <strong>of</strong>f in last year’s poll. A big<br />
part <strong>of</strong> both teams is junior guard/forward Gabby Gough – <strong>Varsity</strong> <strong>Monthly</strong>’s <strong>December</strong><br />
Player <strong>of</strong> the Month. It’s easy for a player to get lost in the shuffle since Sandusky always<br />
features multiple star players, and the last two years have been no exception. But<br />
Gough, at 5-foot-11, has stood tall. The junior has helped the Redskins<br />
to a 5-0 start as <strong>of</strong> Dec. 13, and has scored 21 points in a pair<br />
<strong>of</strong> games – a 61-17 win over Deckerville and a 51-27 win over Cass<br />
City.<br />
Last year Gough was named honorable mention on the <strong>Thumb</strong><br />
Sportswriters Association All-<strong>Thumb</strong> team for Sandusky. The Redskins<br />
went 20-0 in the regular season last year, finishing the season<br />
as the No. 1 team in the final Class C poll. And this year, the Redskins<br />
which also features returning first-team all-TSA pick Haley<br />
Nelson and second-team selection Madysen Jansen, and are lead by<br />
hall <strong>of</strong> fame coach Al DeMott, are on the same track.<br />
Despite her height, Gough is just as likely to hit a three pointer<br />
as she is to score <strong>of</strong>f an <strong>of</strong>fensive rebound. That kind <strong>of</strong> versatility<br />
is common in DeMott-coached players. DeMott, incidentally recently earned his<br />

700th win as Sandusky coach. Gough is a three-sport athlete for the Redskins, also playing<br />
volleyball in the fall. She has played s<strong>of</strong>tball the past two years but says she plans<br />
on running track this spring. She enjoys rollerblading, hanging out with friends and<br />
watching Netflix.<br />
Reese junior Gabe Robinson racked up football postseason honors because <strong>of</strong> how far<br />
he can kick a football. Turns out he’s pretty good with his hands too.<br />
Robinson, a 6-foot-3 sharpshooter, caught fire in the Rockets boys’ basketball season<br />
opener against Millington on Dec. 6, exploding for 20 points in a 58-51 Reese come-from-behind<br />
win. The astonishing part <strong>of</strong> his performance is that Robinson was held scoreless in the<br />
first half. Robinson was one <strong>of</strong> Reese’s top players as a sophomore,<br />
and looks like he’s ready to pick it up a notch this year.<br />
During football season, Robinson was in all-conference<br />
defensive back for the Rockets, but was recognized on a broader<br />
scale for his ability to boot the ball. The <strong>Thumb</strong> Sportswriters<br />
Association named Robinson to its first team as both a punter<br />
and a kicker. And he also was named to the Division 7/8 All State<br />
Team as a punter. He plays baseball for Reese as well.<br />
Robinson’s sister, Sophee, is a starting guard on the Reese<br />
girls’ basketball team and he includes singing duets with his sister<br />
while driving as one <strong>of</strong> his hobbies. He also likes to golf, although<br />
he admits his game needs a little improving.<br />

Advertiser <strong>of</strong> the Month. Club 24 is owned and operated by Ross & Linda Downing <strong>of</strong> Caro.<br />
In 2014 the Downings purchased the JJ Jamokes restaurant from John Sauber. In 2016, they<br />
closed JJ Jamokes, remodeled the building and reopened it as the Club 24 Sports Bar & Grill.<br />
Club 24 takes its name from a “dive bar” known as Club 24 that was located at the same location.<br />
It was torn down before the construction <strong>of</strong> JJ Jamokes. The original Club 24 was<br />
owned by Linda Downings parents, Keith & Gayenell Dykes.<br />
Club 24 Sports Bar & Grill features Buzztime trivia and games for the whole family to<br />
enjoy. Club 24 also has 32 TVs; it is the perfect place to watch the “Big Game” or just hang<br />
out with family and friends. Club 24 <strong>of</strong>fers appetizers, sandwiches and wings, they have<br />
recently updated their menu to include a Caro area favorite, dough balls. Ross and Linda<br />
and their staff are huge supporters <strong>of</strong> all high school sports in the area. Thank you, Ross &<br />
Linda and the Club 24 staff for supporting high school athletics in the <strong>Thumb</strong> area by being<br />
loyal advertisers in <strong>Varsity</strong> <strong>Monthly</strong> <strong>Magazine</strong>. Next time you are looking for the right<br />
