DANCE AT MARYMOUNT
MANHATTAN COLLEGE
The Marymount Manhattan College Department
of Dance prides itself on providing the best of both
worlds—a strong dance program, rigorous curriculum,
and excellent faculty combined with a well-rounded
education that comes from being part of a liberal
arts college. It is the department’s philosophy that
this combination offers the best preparation for the
dancer to perform on and off the stage. We believe
that becoming a dancer is not just a matter of
learning dance techniques or interrelated subjects,
but requires the kind of personal growth that a
liberal arts education provides. Offering both a BFA
and BA in Dance, we strongly encourage study in
interrelated disciplines of Dance rich with creativity
and opportunity. The dance faculty is committed to
the belief that learning through the body is a means
for the acquisition, translation, and creation of social,
historical, and theoretical knowledge. Our movement
classes offer a rigorous approach to the physical and
verbal command of dance vocabulary, requiring the
student to formulate aesthetic insights and apply them
in the contexts of individual works, stylistic traditions,
and historical and cultural awareness. Students are
able to pursue a minor or a double major in other
areas of the College’s curriculum, providing them with
additional skills to use after graduating and expanding
their opportunities for personal growth. Our interest
is in the dancer as a whole person, an artist who
balances a trained body with an active, capable mind
and deeply engaged spirit. Senior year students are
assisted with resumes, photos, and cover letters, to
equip them for interviews and/or auditions. We strive
to instill discipline, self-esteem, artistry, and creativity,
components that students need to realize their fullest
potential in any profession, but most especially
in dance.
NEW YORK CITY IS OUR CAMPUS
The Marymount Manhattan College Department of Dance offers the opportunity to enjoy New York City’s
unparalleled cultural resources. Dancers have performed at The Joyce Theater, 92nd Street Y’s “Fridays at Noon,”
Everett Performing Arts Center, The Hostos Center for the Arts & Culture, Aaron Davis Hall, Parsons Dance Gala,
and at public high schools in the New York City area. Dance majors are often given the opportunity to sign up for
free tickets to dance in performances around the city, and our course work may require students to attend multiple
performances throughout a semester with group rates. Additionally, the Upper East Side is home to Museum Mile,
with the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Frick, and The Guggenheim all within walking distance of our campus.
By the spring semester of senior year, students begin to explore options for working, auditioning, and interviewing
in the New York City area in their area of specialty.
Internships
Internships and independent studies create a
bridge from college to the professional dance
world. The dance department’s relationships with
several companies and arts organizations help
place students in areas such as fundraising,
marketing, company and school management,
production, and teaching where they gain work
experience, build their resumes, and create
professional connections. Recent internships
have been held with the schools and companies of
Merce Cunningham, Martha Graham, José Limón,
Paul Taylor, Lar Lubovitch, David Parsons, and
Stephen Petronio, as well as with organizations
including the Princess Grace Foundation, New
York Live Arts, The Joyce Theater, Sony, Lifestyle
Media, Pointe Magazine, The National Dance
Institute, and The New York State Council for
the Arts.
BRITTNEY OATHOUT, BA ’16
working at her internship at the
National Museum of Dance in
Saratoga, New York.
In their auditions, candidates
compete for dance
scholarships, renewable for
three years if the student
remains in the Dance
program and maintains a 3.0
grade point average. Dance
scholarships are awarded
on the basis of talent and
academic record. In addition,
the College offers many
academic scholarships;
contact the Office of
Admission at 212-517-0430
for further information about
these scholarships and other
questions regarding the
application process.
“I was very fortunate to
work with Jacqulyn Buglisi
and perform her signature
piece, Requiem, in my
first year at Marymount
Manhattan. Subsequently,
Ms. Buglisi periodically
invited me to perform
with her company as an
apprentice. Following
graduation, I became a
full company member of
Buglisi Dance Theatre.”
Study Abroad
Dance majors have the opportunity to study abroad
through our Study Abroad office. To date, students
have studied at the Theatreschool in Amsterdam
(The Netherlands), DanceJerusalem – Rothberg
International School and the Jerusalem Academy of
Music and Dance (Israel), London Contemporary
Dance School (England), University of Roehampton
(England), Wells College (France), Lorenzo de’
Medici Institute (Italy), and Bond University
(Australia).
“At MMC, I received not only the very
highest technical training, but my
education in dance and the liberal arts
opened my eyes and mind to all that I
could become. As a result of my training
at Marymount Manhattan and the
relationships I developed along the way,
I was blessed to be hired by the Parsons
Dance Company immediately upon
graduation.”
Bachelor of
Fine Arts
(BFA)
The Bachelor of Fine Arts is a professional
program in dance designed for the student who
plans to pursue a career in dance performance
and/or choreography. The BFA Dance program
emphasizes the nurturing and further
development of each student’s technical skills
and artistry. Students study both ballet and
modern and/or jazz daily. Courses in music,
choreography, anatomy, production, and dance
history round out the dance curriculum. Each
semester, students further their performance
experience while rehearsing and studying all
aspects of dance production.
Ballet
Classical ballet training is the primary focus of this
concentration, with emphasis placed on proper use
of turnout, alignment, and development of strength.
The curriculum is broad-based in its training,
encompassing, but not limited to, the traditions
of R.A.D., Vaganova, Cecchetti, the French School,
and others. Current methods of movement analysis
are critical to the knowledge of this technique so
that students move beyond learning by imitation
and attain deeper understanding. Classes en pointe
actualize the technique and are a focus of this
concentration, and men’s classes are devoted to the
technical skills required of male dancers. Quality of
movement as a platform for artistic expression is
honed in the advanced levels, while special attention
is paid to maintaining the integrity of the technique
throughout the curriculum.
Modern
The BFA concentration in Modern Dance offers a
rich program of study in the essential movement
principles and skills particular to this dance form.
Course offerings in the techniques of modern dance
pioneers Martha Graham, Lester Horton, José Limón,
Alwin Nikolais, May O’Donnell, and Paul Taylor
individually address locomotion motivated by the
specific use of the torso, and the breath and weight of
the entire body. In addition, courses in improvisation,
designed to encourage an in-depth exploration
of movement, ultimately provide valuable skills
necessary for individual freedom of expression in
both the performance and invention of dance.
Choreography
Students in the Choreography concentration study, in
theory and practice, the art and craft of choreography.
Through various processes, techniques, sources, styles,
and points of view, they gain experience in composing
dances in both solo and group forms. In addition, students
acquire an understanding of production value and
technical support and how these impact the conception,
development, and execution of an artistic idea and the
realization of a complete theatrical experience. Honing
their craft in a diverse array of rehearsal environments,
participating either as performers or choreographers,
students completing the work in this concentration
are prepared to mold and pursue their own individual
aesthetic interests and objectives.
Jazz
The Jazz concentration is a comprehensive
curriculum of dance studies with additional
requirements in jazz and tap techniques. The jazz
dance component is structured with theories and
practices created by such Broadway luminaries
as Jack Cole, Agnes DeMille, and Bob Fosse. Tap
courses address both traditional Broadway and
rhythm tap disciplines. To maximize potential
opportunities in the field, candidates within the
concentration are encouraged to audition for
the musical theatre productions produced by the
College’s theatre department. The goal of the
concentration is to generate professionals through
the dynamic synthesis of Western theatrical art
forms, to provide relevant material for today’s
artists, and to help students develop a personal
voice in jazz dance through exploring historical and
contemporary styles.
me as a dancer, an artist, and as a
that I left as Marymount Manhattan’s
biggest advocate.”
“The opportunities I had in the
dance department allowed me to
develop, challenge, and experiment
with my ideas as an artist while also making
connections in the industry. These connections
were invaluable, as I left MMC with job-in-hand
working as the production manager and media
artist for Peridance. I now have a family here in
NYC, from those I went to school with to those I
am still meeting.”
—Meghan Rose Murphy, BA ’12
“The Body, Science,
and Motion program
gave me everything I
needed and more to be
accepted into the Sarah
Lawrence graduate
program for dance/
movement therapy. I
continued dancing and
was able to incorporate
the things I learned
in the studio and the
classroom to see how
dance can help people
in many different
facets.”
— Taylor Deysher, BA ’14
Bachelor of Arts (BA)
The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Dance
offers interdisciplinary pursuits of
dance studies in dialogue with or
congruent to concert dance. The
dance department emphasizes the
importance of dance education as
applied to pedagogical systems,
theorizations of performance
practices, an analysis of movement
and its implications in a variety
of arenas, and the emerging
relationships between dance and
media. BA candidates are given a
solid foundation in dance technique
and a balanced approach to
course work to facilitate the four
concentrations: Body, Science, and
Motion; Dance and Media; Dance
Studies; and Teaching Dance Arts.
The curriculum is comprehensive,
forward thinking, and pragmatic in
its approach to future studies and
careers in dance-related fields. It
is non-performance-based and has
the flexibility to meet the needs of
dance students, dance professionals
seeking a degree, and those
interested in pursuing a minor or
double major in a related field.
Body, Science, and Motion
The BS&M concentration creates an
opportunity to combine dance with
a scientific foundation, providing a
path for those who wish to pursue
postgraduate programs in allied
health, somatic work, or general
research. Dance majors prepare
for roles as practitioners, physical
therapists, movement specialists,
consultants, clinical educators, and
scholars. Depending on career goals,
the concentration can stand alone or
be further enhanced with the MMC
Biology minor. Our goal is to support
the need to meet the challenges of
the rapidly changing and burgeoning
field of dance medicine. Internships
with noted practitioners and medical
institutions in Manhattan will
provide our candidates with cuttingedge
experience and introduce
opportunities in the field.
Dance and Media
The Dance and Media concentration
provides theoretical and practical
experience for students who wish
to record, document, present, and/
or manipulate images related to
the body, dance, and movement.
Dance and Media students work
in artistic, scholarly, archival, and
arts administration/marketing
contexts. The concentration
addresses the conception and
production of audio and visual
media for use in live, recorded, and
web-based applications. A variety
of sub-concentrations permit the
exploration of specialized interests
in the dance and media fields.
Dance Studies
The Dance Studies concentration
equips students with a detailed
knowledge of dance practices and
theories across a range of social,
historical, cultural, economic,
political, and artistic contexts. It
fosters a thorough understanding
of selected theoretical debates and
issues that are pertinent to the study
of dance in order to provide students
with creative, compositional,
and performance strategies for
the production, analysis, and
documentation of dance. Students
learn to select and manage relevant
source materials from which
they can analyze, interpret, and
synthesize research findings.
Students are also able to critique,
construct, and embody ideas
through oral, literary, electronic, and
performance modes.
Teaching Dance Arts
The Teaching Dance Arts
concentration provides theoretical
knowledge and practical experience
for BA dance majors who wish to
pursue a career in teaching dance
to those who seek movement
exploration as a means toward
self-expression, self-discovery,
and self-knowledge. It addresses
the fundamental and practical
knowledge of various dance
techniques, principles of music,
anatomy, curriculum development,
and pedagogy. Students learn to
incorporate the National Dance
Education Standards for teaching
dance in the arts for levels from
children through professionals.
Students explore the methods
and strategies of teaching creative
movement, the structure and
content development required to
create a beginning-level technique
class, and the observational
and critical thinking skills for
assessment. A broadened perspective
ensures recognition of the role
that dance education can play in
the enrichment of lifelong learning
skills and allows for an emphasis
on special populations, community
outreach, arts advocacy through
education, interdisciplinary
practices, and teaching as creating,
performance, and vocabulary. This
track is housed within the BA Dance
major and does not constitute
a minor in education leading to
New York State certification in dance.
Audition Dates
Auditions are held nine times per year.
Four auditions are held off-campus, in Austin,
San Francisco, Chicago, and West Palm Beach.
Five auditions take place on campus in New York City.
One is held in November for spring admittance; the other
four take place during the spring semester. For a complete
and up-to-date list of audition dates, visit
www.mmm.edu/dance.
Audition Process
All applicants, whether they are pursuing a BA or BFA
degree in Dance, must audition for acceptance and proper
placement in the Dance program. Information is available
upon request from the dance department. Under no
circumstances are private auditions allowed. All audition
candidates participate in an abbreviated ballet class and
learn a jazz and/or modern combination. Tap is assessed
once a student is accepted to the program during the firstyear/transfer
orientation. Additionally, a rhythmic skills
evaluation is given for placement purposes only. After the
technical segment of the audition, auditionees who have
demonstrated proficiency in at least one area are asked to
present a solo dance. A one-to-two minute solo is required
in the styles of the dancer’s choice, e.g., ballet, modern, or
jazz (no tap or hip-hop); it need not be choreographed by
the applicant. Following the solo, candidates have a private
interview with members of the Dance faculty. It is to your
advantage to audition in person at one of the audition
sites. If you audition at one of our off-campus sites and get
accepted to the program, we believe it is vitally important
to visit the school at which you intend to spend four years.
