What’s new at Eye Centre Heywood? 

New Look – we’re thinking about up-dating the shop front. Just to remind you, we’re 

near the new Post Office, just a couple of doors down Market Street. At the moment, 

we’re painted green, with a slightly faded sign. The plan is to go grey – because it’s a 

fashionable colour. Any suggestions for a better choice will be considered. 

Charity News – our new “pupdate” from Guide Dogs 

for the Blind has arrived. If you want to have a look at 

the new photo of our sponsored puppy, we have it on 

display. He’s not a cuddly puppy any more – more like 

a cuddly, big dog. 

Even though the shop front colour will be changing, 

inside, we still have a wide selection of fashionable 

frames to suit all budgets. As before, standard lenses, 

including varifocal and bifocals as included in the price 

for frames over £69.00 and you still get a warm 

welcome from Sue and Brit and a thorough eye test 

from Maralyn, our resident optician. 

We are still collecting unwanted glasses for people in 

need. They have asked for donations to be of useable 

glasses. I’m not sure what we should do about old 

cases. I think – just bring them along too.

MEDICAL SCANS ULTRASOUND CLINIC 

As a sonographer I have worked in many NHS sites delivering ultrasound scans in GP 

surgeries. The team from Streetwise recently came to visit us at our clinic in Queensway 

and I was delighted to show them around the Clinic demonstrating the different 

ultrasound machines. Medical scans is an independent private CQC registered site focusing 

on providing a range of diagnostic ultrasound scans with a printed report. 

We can carry out specific types of scans including those carried out on individuals with 

sporting injuries as well as joint pain in their knee, ankle, foot or shoulder. As ultrasound is 

a safe non-invasive form of investigation, it is widely used to assess the growing baby during 

pregnancy. In past years, technological advances have enabled ultrasound imaging to show 

critical assessment of the bony surface of joints and the soft tissue to detect inflammation 

and fluid and to image tendon and muscle tears. Ultrasound can detect the presence of 

groin hernias. It is used to look at the uterus and ovaries. In addition, some people might 

have kidney pain or upper /lower abdomen issues that require an ultrasound. Ultrasound is 

also used to detect the location and size of a clot in major blood vessels. 

If you don’t want a lengthy wait or if the scan cost can be claimed back from an insurance

This year the “Friends of Queen’s Park” 

have organised a calendar using 

photographs kindly donated by local 


All the amazing pictures within the 

calendar have been taken within the 

Queens Park and it is amazing to see 

what wonderful wildlife is thriving within 

our local park. 

The calendars are £5.00 each, and 

all money raised will be used to fund 

future events within the park. 

They are currently available from Queen’s 

Park Café and Bamford Print, Cowburn 

Street, Heywood. Orders can also be made 

by requesting a copy on the “Friends of 

Queen’s Park” Face book page or by 

ringing 0749 632 0836. 

If you would like to become involved 

with helping your local park to remain an 

interesting, attractive and safe place to 

visit all year round then please contact the 

Friends of Queens Park Group through the

07496 320836. They do some fantastic work 

throughout the year including organising 

litter picks in the local area, celebrating the 

park through “Heywood in Bloom”, assisting 

with Heywood Charities Fete, arranging 

regular traditional Punch and Judy shows 

and Dogs Trust and R.S.P.B events. To 

celebrate the visit of Dippy the dinosaur in 

Rochdale 2020, a bog garden was created 

in the old paddling pool near the lake. 

They hold meetings in the Park Lodge on the 

3rd Thursday of every month and everyone is welcome.

Rosslee Construction joins 

second phase of Emergency 

Works at Hopwood Hall Estate 

Hopwood Hall Estate is delighted 

to confirm that osslee Construction 

based in ancashire has been 

appointed and began work earlier 

this month on the second wave of the 

emergency upgrade of Hopwood Hall. 

osslee is expected to complete in 

early as part of a 

matchinggrant from Historic ngland 

and ochdale Council. This phase is 

focused on stabilising the Hall and 

making it wind watertight. 

Councillor Janet Emsley, cabinet 

member for neighbourhoods, 

community and culture, at Rochdale 

Borough Council, said: 

“It’s great to see that this exciting 

project has taken another step 

forward with our support. This work will 

help prevent further deterioration of 

this important building and preserve 

it for future generations. We’ve already 

invested well over than £250,000 into 

the hall over the last five years and are 

working closely with Hopwood to help 

him realise his plans to bring it back 

into use.” 

This second phase of emergency 

works follows anchesterbased 

Buttress Architects design brief which 

was put out to tender earlier this year 

and subsequently won by osslee.

“Our on-going and urgent goal has 

been to get Hopwood Hall protected 

against the elements ensuring that it 

can be both wind & watertight as soon 

as possible in order to prevent further 

damage to this beautiful building.

roceeds going to enefit the riends 

mission and activities to assist in 

saving the Hall.
