Mission Statement<br />
<strong>Varsity</strong> <strong>Monthly</strong> <strong>Thumb</strong> Area (“VMTA”) is dedicated to the recognition and advancement <strong>of</strong> high<br />
school athletics in Michigan’s <strong>Thumb</strong> region. VMTA, created in 2014, is a monthly sports magazine,<br />
which displays achievements <strong>of</strong> local high school athletes, primarily through high quality photography.<br />
At the heart <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Varsity</strong> <strong>Monthly</strong> mission is the support <strong>of</strong> local students, and our high school athletic<br />
departments, in an effort to preserve physical health, competition through sport, and the development <strong>of</strong><br />
strong, well-rounded future leaders. Our various pr<strong>of</strong>essional photographers attend games and/or events<br />
in each <strong>of</strong> the 17 communities that we cover, each month. We then display these photographs <strong>of</strong> as many<br />
athletes as possible, through our monthly publication, website and facebook page. VTMA highlights a<br />
male and female standout athlete each month on our “Players <strong>of</strong> the Month” page. We are joined in this<br />
awesome mission by a wealth <strong>of</strong> local businesses who support our youth by advertising in our publication,<br />
on the page/s <strong>of</strong> their selected locality. The magazine would not be possible without these great<br />
supporters and ask that you keep our advertising customers in mind for your local business needs. We<br />
display the advertisements in the magazine, on our website and on our facebook page to provide them<br />
with maximum exposure. We also award a customer each month with our “Advertiser <strong>of</strong> the Month,”<br />
providing local business owners with an opportunity to reflect on the impact <strong>of</strong> high school athletics in<br />

Players Of The Month<br />
<strong>Varsity</strong> <strong>Monthly</strong> <strong>Thumb</strong> is proud to announce our new sponsor for the Players<br />

For the past four years, Kyle Stockmeyer has been a fixture on the<br />
court for the Reese basketball team. And the senior left his mark<br />
as one <strong>of</strong> the best players in Rockets’ history. Stockmeyer hit the<br />
ground running by averaging in double figures as a freshman, and<br />
didn’t let up. This year he became the third Reese boys’ basketball<br />
to score 1,000 points in his career.<br />
The 6-foot-3 forward, who can drive to basket or drain a threepointer,<br />
averaged 14 points and hauled down nearly 10 rebounds<br />
per game. He is a member <strong>of</strong> the All-<strong>Thumb</strong> team and also earned<br />
honorable-mention all-state from the Detroit Free Press and Associated<br />
Press.<br />
“The reason for my successful year is the people I’ve been surrounded<br />
by,” Stockmeyer said. “My teammates and my coaches have<br />
always given me confidence and set me up for success for whatever<br />
I do.” Stockmeyer was the 2017 <strong>Thumb</strong> Player <strong>of</strong> the Year, and also<br />
plays basketball and runs track. He will continue his basketball career at St Clair<br />
Community College.<br />

Since she began high school, Cass City’s Sayge Cuthrell has had a knack for standing out on<br />
the court. And her talent is impossible to ignore now that she’s a senior. Cuthrell could fill a<br />
trophy case from awards earned during her athletic career – and that’s just from the past six<br />
months. As an outside hitter for the Red Hawks volleyball team,<br />
Cuthrell earned third-team all-state and first-team all-<strong>Thumb</strong><br />
honors in 2017, while playing for coach Amy Cuthrell – Sayge’s mother.<br />
And the 5-foot-10 forward kept her motor running during basketball<br />
season, averaging 18.7 points and 11.1 rebounds per game, while<br />
scoring the 1,000th point <strong>of</strong> her career. Her performance didn’t go<br />
unnoticed as Cuthrell earned honorable-mention all-state and firstteam<br />
all-<strong>Thumb</strong> honors.<br />
“I worked hard in the <strong>of</strong>fseason with jump training and lifting that<br />
allowed me to be stronger and a better player in season,” Cuthrell<br />
said. “I just gave it my all and did what was asked <strong>of</strong> me from my coach.”<br />
Cuthrell is also a star s<strong>of</strong>tball player for Cass City, but is presently<br />
sayge cuthrell out indefinitely due to an injury she suffered during basketball season.<br />
She plans on attending Ferris State University to study nursing.<br />

defeated some very notible competition to make<br />
it to the state quarter final game. Beating powerhouse<br />
Saginaw Nouvel and 2 days later they<br />
backed that up with a huge win against defending<br />
State Champion Flint Beecher. With amazing fan<br />
support, the Patriots effort did not dissapoint.<br />
