WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS & TRICKS
IF YOU ARE JUST STARTING OUT
BY LAURA BAROVICH OF LUMIERE PHOTOGRAPHY
So you want to make that jump into the unpredictable world of
wedding photography. Many of us photographers have to start
somewhere, whether it be photographing your family, friends
and even your church. You find out after much soul searching
and prays that you enjoy documenting precious moments because
let’s face it, we are the history keepers if it weren’t for us
many key moments in history would just be lost. I started just
like everyone else, a girl with a mediocre camera and a dream.
In my 1st year, I shot everything and everyone I could get my
hands on. Then one day I was asked to shoot a friend's wedding.
I didn’t ask for any form of payment just maybe to bring home
some cookies. Armed with my nifty 50 and canon rebel off I
went, nervous, borderline having a panic attack honestly. Let me
tell you! Some guests had better cameras than I did! But I didn’t
care, I was there, mentally and emotionally ready to rock. I
worked all day and into the late evening hours on end, the
couple gifted me a tip and I was astatic that someone would pay
“little ole’ me”.
DIA DE LOS MUERTOS
Dia de los Muertos is a popular holiday celebrated in Mexico to celebrate loved ones that have passed before us. During a three day period at the first of November, graves are cleaned
and decorated with marigolds (sometimes called the “flower of the dead” in Mexico), sugar skulls, and candles to invite loved ones to visit us in spirit. Most of us see the sugar skull face
paint and think of Halloween, but it’s actually a completely different holiday. Those that paint their faces are actually dressing up as Catrinas. The purpose of the holiday is not to scare
anyone like Halloween. It is a celebration of the natural human lifecycle! Colors have always inspired me, and the first time I saw the Catrina face painting, I knew that I needed to learn
more about this holiday and find models to complete a Dia de los Muertos session. While on of my models is of Mexican descent and celebrates this holiday with her family every year,
I wanted to show how we can all celebrate this holiday by including someone that had blonde hair and blue eyes and is clearly not of Mexican descent. Celebrating together is a great
way to learn about other cultures and what makes them so special I was really hoping to grow the knowledge of this special cultural holiday as well as celebrate the use of color on this
personal project. Summerana’s smoke bomb overlays really helped build a spiritual realm for some of the images, and I couldn’t be happier with the outcome!
