EDITORIAL
Software issues
While not exactly a new industry, the
electronic security sector is still evolving and
the next big change is happening right now...
Throughout the year we are invited to attend various
company and distributor roadshows/events to look at new
launches and hear about new services. Increasingly however
we have noticed that the amount of new hardware on show is
dwarfed compared to the latest software developments being
released. I mentioned this in a column after IFSEC this year and
I’m seeing the trend continue with just about every event in 2019
so are we in a new phase of technology development in the
sector - with software and SaaS becoming the major growth area
and hardware R&D slowing down?
No doubt cloud storage and applications are the way forward
with instant upgrades and data security being the cherries on
top. Software is empowering the surveillance camera and
opening new doors for installers in the same way IP, HD etc did in
the past. So don’t be surprised if the next few years sees the
upgrading of CCTV systems becoming a software job while our
trade shows lean further away from new hardware unveilings. Of
course we will always have a need to fit more capable cameras
but HD will be absolutely fine for some time to come as the
software behind the scenes evolves.
EDITOR
As we went to press with this
edition, Simon Banks, Chairman
of the BSIA, released a statement
following the sad news of the
passing of industry pioneer David
Snook who we featured in our
April edition:
“It is with great sadness that
we report the death of David
Snook.” said Simon. “David lost his battle with cancer aged
69 last Sunday. He was a big BSIA supporter and was
awarded a lifetime achievement (Chairman’s Award) at the
Association’s British Security Awards in July of this year.
“David left the RAF and started his career at Scantronic,
inventing some of the most prolific microprocessor control
panels of the 1980s and 90s. The 9100, 9200 and even the
9600 and 9800 had the magic touch provided by David.
“His contribution saw Scantronic hold near 75% of the
market with his innovative and before-their-time designs.
Later in his career he worked for Dycon, inventing greenlyefficient
switched-mode power supplies, and even found time
to design some of CSL Group’s most successful
communication products. He had a long history with CSL and
made a significant contribution in hardware design to some of
its most successful products.
“David is survived by his wife Mary and their two children,
and our thoughts will be with them during this sad time.”
PSI would like to pass on our condolences to David’s
family, friends and colleagues.
Genetec set to open new HQ in
City of London
Genetec is set to unvei new headquarters in the
City of London. This follows a period of
accelerated growth for Genetec in the UK, with
The next generation is now
onboard at Amthal
Amthal has welcomed the third generation of
the Allam family to join the business under the
company’s apprenticeship scheme.
Luke Allam, son of founder and Operations
Director John Allam, has started as an
Apprentice Engineer, working with the team to
progress into the company strategy.
Luke said: “Amthal has always been part of
my life, and when the opportunity of work
experience was presented, I grasped the
chance to see what it was ‘all about,’ and
understand the commitment of the Allam
family to the business. I had a great time
working in such a positive environment that I
an increase in EMEA revenues over the last five
years.
Paul Dodds, Country Manager, UK & Ireland,
commented: “At a time when Brexit has seen
many organisations reconsider their presence,
Genetec is unequivocal about the role of the
United Kingdom as a critically important part of
the global economy. As such, we’re delighted to
be opening a central London headquarters to
better meet the needs of our channel partners,
end users, and prospects.”
The new headquarters will incorporate an
expanded training facility, and a ‘Genetec
Experience Center’ housing solutions from
Genetec and its ecosystem of technology
partners a dedicated research and development
team focused on justice and public safety
applications for law enforcement, emergency
responders and local government.
wanted to stay and learn more, which the
Apprenticeship scheme now provides.”
The Level 3 Apprenticeship course in Fire
Emergency, and Security Systems is delivered
by a combination of JTL Training college based
classroom learning and ‘on the job’ training,
mentored by Amthal’s team of engineers. All
works and progress are monitored externally.
Luke will be learning about design,
installation and monitoring of smart solutions,
including intruder, CCTV, access control and
fire systems for residential and commercial
applications.
John Allam concluded: “Naturally I’m
delighted and very proud to welcome Luke on
board as the next generation Allam joining our
family business. Luke joining was his decision
and commitment to Amthal after doing work
experience in the summer. We see, as parents
and as a company supporter of
apprenticeships, there has been a significant
change in attitudes towards vocational
learning. This is reflected in the number of
young people that are now choosing to go
down this route as their ‘first choice’. Luke was
determined from the outset and already
making his own mark and identity on our
engineering team.”
VMS. During this time, we helped with many
versions of the new camera, testing them at our
head office and in the field.
“The close technical partnership between
our two companies has grown to provide many
successful surveillance solutions across a range
of diverse applications, including hospitals,
colleges, ports, corporate headquarters and
critical national infrastructure sites.
Mark Rees, Managing Director of 360 Vision
Technology says: ““Check Your Security is a
Euralarm publishes Priorities and Challenges
document 2019-2024
Euralarm has presented its
Priorities and Challenges
2019-2024 with the
publication of the document
“Working together for a safer
and more secure future”
which describes areas of
cooperation to achieve a safer
and more secure society for
Europe and build an industry
that contributes to
sustainable growth in Europe.
The fire safety and security
industry has worked to
develop solutions to prevent and limit the consequences from
threats such as fire, theft, property damage and others. In
collaboration with public authorities, policy makers, standards
and certification bodies and industry associations, the
industry works to address society’s needs for safety and
security in Europe and globally.
Members of the European fire safety and security industry
want to contribute to driving sustainable growth that will
strengthen the EU’s Single Market, attract investment to
Europe, and expand global markets for European companies.
To do this the Euralarm members are continuously assessing
the opportunities and the challenges that they are facing to
identify the priorities that will allow Europe to advance as a
prosperous, safe society and global actor.
The Association’s priorities for 2019 to 2024 are:
• developing a strong Single Market and expanding global
markets for quality products and services;
• raising standards for industry professionals through
training and qualification;
• turning emerging technologies into sustainable solutions;
• advancing knowledge and innovation.
Euralarm aims to accomplish this by focusing on marketoriented
standards for products and services and on a pan-
European testing and certification of products. Accomplishing
the priorities also requires a strong focus on training and
qualifications, digitalisation including cybersecurity, IoT and AI
as well as partnering with research bodies.
THE BOTTOM LINE
IN ASSOCIATION WITH CSL
The interview that gets
the facts from the top
This month Simon Banks
talks to Jonathan Parker,
Managing Director at
EDSB Group of
Companies. EDSB are a national
provider of Fire & Security, Electrical,
Mechanical and Building Services
based in Leeds.
EDSB has experienced lots of recent success. How has that
been achieved?
We are one team made up of experienced Fire & Security personnel, who
collectively have hundreds of years of valuable industry awareness. I am
fortunate to work alongside many key staff members who share my enthusiasm
for unbeatable customer service and a focus on delivering the highest level they
can achieve. Our fantastic client base is made up of many major organisations
across the UK, who have experienced our ‘strive to deliver’ and as a result have
re-paid that faith by renewing their contracts year after year.
What latest technologies are you focusing on?
We have several technological developments running right now which are either
internal or customer facing, and we see these as a huge contributor to our
business becoming more streamlined. Over the past 12 months we have rolled
out a vehicle management system, helping to improve efficiency and reduce our
carbon footprint. The sales department have also started using a state-of-the-art
CRM platform to manage their accounts even better. This is a favourite of ours,
as we want to make sure we visit all clients regularly and not only provide them
with the latest industry updates, but also ensure we are acutely aware of our
own performance.
Over the summer we began a rollout with the WebWay range from CSL, and this
has been hugely beneficial to some of our biggest clients across the UK. They
are now able to monitor their own signalling status as well as manage their own
estates more closely. They can use this as a Building Control System, observing
opening/closing times and perform weekly tests to ensure they are on time and
compliant. We are delighted with the feedback we have already received after
the initial rollout and look forward to offering this product to many more EDSB
clients to show that we are here to support them every day.
Fire compliance has been high on the agenda over the past few years.
How much of a role has this played for EDSB?
We have an internal mantra here: ‘Compliance is Key, at EDSB’. We have always
focused on Fire Compliance and our clients trust our business to protect their
estates and to keep them compliant. There have been a high number of
publicised fires in various environments over the past few years, influencing a
shift in our clients’ behaviour. Ultimately every business has a responsibility to
understand Fire Compliance and to have the correct level of contingency in place
should it ever affect them.
The EDSB Group opened a Design & Training Centre back in July with the aim of
providing our staff with the right amount of knowledge to follow compliance. We are
now hosting FIA training sessions and have already held several Fire Compliance
CPDs with a handful of our major clients. This is crucial in our company ethos as
we are not only maintaining and monitoring our client’s systems, but we are also
educating them on remaining compliant as legislation evolves. Although it might
sound cliché, we provide our clients with a total partnership and I believe this is a
huge part of our longevity and growth in the industry.
YOU SAID IT!
“[CSL’s Dual SIM Router] really helped me out earlier this year when the client’s broadband failed”
Optio OPA4ED28V12IRG
What’s in the box?
Camera
Quick Guide
Security Torx wrench
Fixing screws and wall plugs
Optio products form a
subset of the Vista
range
The OPA4ED28V12IRG camera is an IP67
rated, 4 Megapixel (2560H x 1440V) Eyeball
style analogue camera with a varifocal
2.7mm to 12mm lens. It consists of an aluminium
body and mount available in a dark grey or white
finish. Optio products form a subset of the Vista
range.
Getting started
The camera has a single composite feed that
splits off into three cables. One is for power
supply at 12v DC ±30%. The second is a BNC video
output connection and the third is for a settings
switch for the analogue format. This dual switch
has a captive screw-on top to provide
environmental protection. The four options
available are CVI, AHD, CVBS or TVI format.
The camera globe is held in a wall or ceiling
mountable frame with a single Allen screw locking
its position in the frame. A removable bung in the
side of the frame allows for the cable to be fed out
if surface mounted. Alternatively, an optional
camera mount OPJB4G can be used; this has two
screw capped side and one rear conduit apertures
and is supplied with fixing screws and an Allen
key.
Information is available through the Norbain
Vista website with the camera documentation
available for download once the relevant product
and bracket options are selected. Alternatively, for
smart devices a QR code on the supplied
documentation can be used to download the
manuals and datasheets.
Operation
The camera is supplied with the DIP switch set to
CVBS output allowing it to be viewed on any basic
analogue monitor or system. These switches are
actively monitored so can be changed while the
camera is operational and after a few seconds the
mode changes and confirmation of the new mode
is momentarily displayed in the centre of the
screen.
No lens control is possible when in CVBS mode
as this format does not support coaxial control
signalling. The control protocols used are HDCVI
3.0 or HDCCTV 2.0. There is no conventional or
legacy wired telemetry control connection. A
compatible DVR allows the camera’s on-screen
menu to be selected and the full range of camera
settings to be managed.
Day to Night switching has a default setting of
6 out of a range of 1 to 19 and Night to Day as 12
out of a range of 2 to 20. The max and min range
values will dynamically change to prevent overlap.
A waiting time of 2 out of 1 to 15 defines the delay
to prevent “hunting”. With these default values,
the camera was found to switch to monochrome
at a scene light level of approximately 8 lux and
return to colour mode at just over 15 lux.
Performance
With its default settings the camera provides
good colour rendition for both outdoor and indoor
scenes and a high level of image detail. Its
analogue format means there is no noticeable
latency.
Although stated as a varifocal lens the zoom
operated without the large focus shift often seen
with such lenses. This meant that only a small
focus adjustment was necessary to maximise
detail. This should ideally be performed at low
light in order to open the iris wide for minimal
depth of field if neutral density filters are not
available. Alternatively, the camera has a range of
high shutter speeds that can be used for this
operation.
Two infrared LEDs are used for night vision
with one above and one below the lens. While the
specification states an IR range of 60 metres,
reasonable results were observed to at least 30
metres for the differentiation of objects and
observation of moving subjects.
Conclusion
Working with all of the key analogue HD formats
and providing up to 4MP resolution this camera is
relatively simple to install and set up.
When combined with a compatible recorder,
this camera allows simple and cost-effective
upgrades for legacy analogue systems using
coaxial cabling.
Default values are shown above as underlined.
The Image Mode has options of Standard, Soft
and Flamboyant and these change the various
Brightness, Contrast, Saturation etc. settings from
their default value of 7. Alternatively, these can all
be manually adjusted to suit the scene.
There are 8 privacy zones and they scale
reasonably well with lens zoom position.
The resolution for CVI, TVI and AHD can be set
to either 4MP or 1080p@25fps; the manual also
states a 720p figure for CVI but this was not
available on the tested camera.
TEST
PRODUCT TEST
Midas - SpiderEx
Pic courtesy of Ultimate Handyman on YouTube
SpiderEx is an aerosol
spray formulated to
help remove spiders
and reduce nesting in
almost any area it is
sprayed.
Originally developed for
the CCTV and security
industry to stop spiders
nesting around cameras,
housings and alarm
sensors, its clear, odourless
coating stops spiders and
other crawling insects from
making a nuisance of
themselves.
The product can be used
indoors and outdoors on
any smooth surface and is
available from UK supplier
QED.
In use
Supplied in a 300ml spray
can the product is used in a
simliar way as any other
insect repellant.
We first removed all
signs of spiders from around
cameras, an alarm bell box
and a PIR light before
applying the spray.
After shaking the can
first, the area was sprayed
(avoiding the camera lens).
Due to the nature of a spray it is important that
for best results the product is applied on still days
to avoid blowback or poor coverage due to wind
dispersal. The instructions state that a 1-second
burst of spray will account for 1g of insecticide so
each container holds plenty of applications.
The product sets as a clear lacquer over the
area and it is recommended that, if unsure, you
should check for colour fastness first.
Reapplication is suggested “as necessary”.
The spray has the distinctive odour of an insect
repellant and should be used in well ventilated
areas as you would expect with such a product.
Results
The area around the PIR light was quite heavily
covered with cobwebs and as soon as the
SpiderEx was sprayed around the unit a couple of
spiders emerged and showed an instant reaction
to the product.
After one month of application there was still
no sign of any spider activity on any of the units
even after heavy rain in week three. No new
cobwebs had been formed and the shiny coating
left by the spray was still visible.
Conclusion
We’ve all seen videos online of supposed ‘ghosts’
caught on camera which you can clearly see are
insects crawling around the camera. While this is
a source of amusement for the viewing public it
can be an annoyance for those using motion
detection in their surveillance and can also block
the image (as shown left).
SpiderEx not only removes the likelihood of
unsightly cobwebs around technology but may
also therefore aid in the reduction of unwanted
alarm triggers.
At around £10 per 300ml can of spray it might
sound a bit pricey but it does represent a simple
method of reducing insect activity for your
installations. What’s more, in our test it did
appear to work unlike a bowl of conkers or
peppermint oil that ‘old wives’ say will keep
spiders away. It was quite clear from the reaction
of spiders in the vicinity when the spray was
applied that they really do not like this stuff!
After one month of application
there was still no sign of any
spider activity on any of the units
even after heavy rain
BENCHMARK
...The Event of 2019
Show Guide
SiX
19
2 November 5/6
Dedicated to Installers & Integrators
In Association with:
sixevent.co.uk
ORGANISED BY Pro-Activ

SiX
2 19
SiX is the industry’s ONLY event dedicated
to serving the ever-changing needs of
the busy installer and integrator
SiX 2019 opens its doors!
Welcome to the inaugural SiX event. You asked for a security systems
installer/integrator dedicated event so here it is! I hope you have a
great two days – there certainly is a lot going on…
As the publisher of security industry titles
PSI and Benchmark, we have been asked
many times if we could stage an event
aimed squarely at our readers; the
installers, designers and integrators of
electronic security systems, rather than the
end users of the technology who have
completely different requirements. Some
people told us that they felt events which
tried to tick all security-related boxes by
targeting all levels and facets of the security
industry were not working for those looking
to reach the installers and specifiers of
technology. So here we are with SiX!
Support from the industry
Right from the start, SiX has had the support of
the UK’s largest security event, IFSEC. Simon
Parker of Informa stated, ‘’IFSEC is delighted to
support and partner Pro-Activ in the exciting
launch of the SiX event in Manchester. We’ve
been listening to our customers in the North
and Midlands for a number of years and fully
understand the need for a highly targeted
regional event, which provides support and
guidance for security professionals. IFSEC and
Pro-Activ have enjoyed a rewarding, longstanding
partnership and this strategic alliance
will play to the strengths of both brands.”
Also supporting SiX are all of the major UK trade
organisations, certifiers and associations
including the BSIA, NSI, SSAIB, FSA, FIA and
CTSP. The fact that all of these bodies came
onboard to lend their weight to the show told us
that this was exactly the right kind of event to be
hosting:
“We see SiX as a fantastic opportunity
to engage with installers to discuss
standards and regulations and how
we can raise the professionalism of
the security industry.”
– Andrew Brown, SSAIB
“The FIA is the largest fire protection
trade association in Europe with more
than 850 members. Our objective is to
promote, improve and perfect fire
protection methods, devices, services and
apparatus and we see SiX as being a great way
to help us to deliver on those messages by
informing specifically targeting installers”
– Ian Moore, FIA
“As the mark of approval for elite
companies within the security and fire
safety sectors, the National Security
Inspectorate (NSI) is delighted to be
supporting the new SiX event. It represents
another valuable opportunity for security
systems installers across the UK to connect,
broaden knowledge and further raise standards
within the sector.” – Richard Jenkins, NSI
“The BSIA are excited to be a part of
the SiX event. The event provides
security professionals an excellent
opportunity to meet major players and
influencers in the industry, as well as learn
about technology developments and potential
legislative change that may impact them and
their business.”
– Mike Reddington, BSIA
Exhibitors
One of the main attractions of an event such as
SiX is the list of companies that will be keen to
network with visitors to discuss the latest
developments in technology and its application.
As you will see from the listing later in this Show
Guide there have been plenty of companies
signing up to take part in the exhibition. What
you will note is that we have not just put the
show together with the aim of filling floor space,
the companies at SiX are all innovators in the
market and can provide you with new and
exciting ways to grow and develop your business.
All of the exhibitors at the event want to talk to
people like YOU.
2
www.sixevent.co.uk

“As SiX is an event that focuses on
installers it is particularly relevant to
Inner Range in the UK as our latest
solutions are aimed directly at the
installer. 2019 Sees us expanding rapidly
within the UK market and SIX promises to
attract our target audience”
– Tim Northwood, Inner Range
Location
Another issue addressed by SiX is the location of
the event. As we all know the main security show
in the UK takes place every year in London.
While the ongoing success of the event and the
fact it remains the first dates put into the diary
every year is a testament to its position as the
industry leader. However there is no doubt that
for some installers a trip down South is not the
most appetising of travel propositions. By hosting
SiX in Manchester in the new purpose-built Event
City the SiX show splits the nation in half, sitting
in an easily accessible area with plenty of local
options for overnight stays if required.
EventCity is one of the UK’s best conference and
exhibition venues and is the second largest
event space in the UK outside of London,
conveniently located close to the main arterial
routes in and out of Manchester.
“I think the industry is missing the
convenience of a ‘middle of the
country’ show – potential customers
from Birmingham and above don’t
appear to have the appetite to trek to London
(Docklands) and therefore this show should
generate more flow from our Northern
prospects” – Mark Rees, 360 Vision
Technology
“SiX has got the timing, location and
value right. With PSI magazine’s
strong following we feel confident that
installers will want to come along. The
North West has been a bit neglected by larger
events in recent years and it’s a concentrated
area in terms of installer companies so an event
in Manchester makes a lot of sense. We hope
that SiX is successful for both exhibitors and
installers and becomes the ‘go to’ installer
event for the North complementing IFSEC each
summer.” – Rob Evans, CSL
In essence SiX is being held at the right time and
in the right place. It is aimed squarely at
installers, systems builders and integrators with
no end-user focus or long trek on the cards for
those looking to attend.
“Installers are at the forefront of
understanding the evolution of
security needs for residential and
commercial premises. As SiX is
dedicated to installers we see it as the ideal
platform to engage with them. Furthermore,
Manchester is a great meeting point for the
Midlands and the North while being well
connected by public transport to the South of
the country.” – Ben Linklater, Optex Europe
So the event has the right focus, support,
exhibitors and location but what else is there?
Well, we have two seminar streams, one from
PSI covering business development issues and
one from Benchmark looking at technology
innovations and opportunities. There is also a
workshop from CTSP running throughout the
event, a security industry Question Time session
plus, on the evening of the first day, we will host
the PSI Premier Awards Gala Dinner. More
information can be found further in this Guide.
In essence we’ve taken on-board all of your
suggestions and requirements for an event and
met all of your demands – and more. I hope you
have an enjoyable and rewarding time at SiX!
SiX 2019
Programme
The SiX seminar streams
break the mould of trade
event theatre
presentations as they
have been developed
with the installer in mind,
not the system
manufacturer whose aim
is to promote a product
or service. Independent
presentations mean that
there are no sales
pitches or biased
messages. The two
streams have been
compiled by the two
leading security industry
publications PSI and
Benchmark with a view
to maximising the value
of attending the event.
The PSI Stream is
concerned with
developing your business
while the Benchmark
stream looks at the use
of technology to achieve
optimum results.
PSI Seminar Programme Day 1, 5th November
11.00-11.30 Growing your service business
It is surprising how little time is invested by business owners and management in
the security sector in growing the service contract base and related income
streams, when most of the profits and the value of the company are in the service
area. The focus of this presentation will be on providing practical strategies to grow
your service business.
Jim Rathbone, Rathbone Results, Managing Director
12.00-12.30 Apprenticeships and employers
David will provide an update on what is involved in the fire and security
apprenticeship programme (what the apprentices learner over the three-year
programme), which colleges & training providers offer the programme, how the
programme is delivered (block release, day release and online) and how much the
apprenticeship will cost the employer.
David Scott, Skills for Security, Managing Director
13.00-13.30 GDPR: everything you wanted to know but were afraid to ask!
A general session aimed specifically at questions and answers from delegates
relating to general GDPR requirements what organisations should be doing that
may have been overlooked or misunderstood. The speaker will answer questions
from the floor relating to general enquiries, more specific enquiries relating to
surveillance and CCTV and other forms of security systems, including digital
recognition systems such as biometrics and facial recognition. Also the role of DPO
and compliance with user rights and DSAR requests.
Ray Ford, The GDPR Institut, FoundingAssociate and Data Protection Officer
14.00-14.30 Business opportunities through cyber security
Keeping a business secure against the ever increasing cyber threat is critical for any
organisation. As Government and, increasingly, the private sector look to ensure a
secure supply chain, this session will highlight how maintaining good cyber security
can deliver real opportunities to gain and retain business.
Chris Pinder, IASME, Business Development Manager
15.00-15.45 Question Time
Ever wanted to put a question to the industry trade associations and certifiers? Now
is your chance with the PSI Question Time panel, ready to address any concerns or
queries in an open forum discussion about the security and fire sectors.
Panel:
Mike Reddington, BSIA, Chief Executive Officer
Matthew Holliday, NSI, Technical Manager
Geoff Tate, SSAIB, chairman
PSI Seminar Programme
GROWING YOUR SECURITY INSTALLATION BUSINESS
The PSI seminar stream consists of key information regarding the day-to-day running, growth
and success of security installation businesses. Delegates will pick up advice on a range of
subjects concerning staff, sales and finance to help develop their company performance and
meet the demands of the modern environment.
Also covered will be the thorny subject of GDPR but for both the installation company and the
systems being fitted. Independent experts will look at best practice for the business contracted
to carry out the work and also for the customer who is processing the information.
Audience: This impartial series is aimed at the managers and owners of UK security installation
for it under the new privacy legislation.
Ray Ford, The GDPR Institut, Founding Associate and Data Protection Officer
11.30-12.00 Recurring revenue
Recurring revenue is the life’s blood of any business model and is the true value and
worth of any security company. Find out how you can raise your standing with wellmanaged
Anthony King, Square One, Managing Director
12.30-13.00 Attracting new talent (sales and engineers)
With a widely acknowledged shortage of quality engineers and skilled sales staff,
could one solution be to look to other sectors for future stars in addition to the
security pool? Also, how can you make your company an attractive proposition for new
employees and generations?
George Zitko, Zitko Consulting, Managing Director
13.30-14.00 Finance options for growing businesses
Benchmark Seminar Programme Day 1, 5th November
10.30-11.00 The importance of common specifications for smart solutions
As an organisation developing common protocols for system interoperability, ONVIF
has created a number of technical profiles which simplify integrations. This seminar
will look at how the organisation is developing new solutions which will assist in the
creation of bespoke system as new technologies impact on the security sector.
Per Björkdahl, ONVIF, Chairman
11.30-12.00 Selling Benefits, Not Products
As technologies become smarter, the industry emphasis on selling ‘products’ must
change. Customers don’t want to know what devices are being offered, but instead
must understand how the systems will solve their everyday problems. This seminar
will address how integrators and installers must highlight the benefits available
from systems to ensure end users understand the value on offer.
Mark Bennett, Texecom, Regional Sales Manager - North of England and Scotland
12.30-13.00 Cybersecurity Compliance and Risk Mitigation
As the security sector rapidly migrates onto network-based platforms, the issue of
cybersecurity must be taken seriously. In many cases, regulations and legislation
impacts on end users. As a result, integrators and installers must not only be aware
of the changing regulations, but must also ensure they can demonstrate
compliance to corporate clients.
Steven Kenny, Axis Communications, Industry Liaison - Architecture & Engineering
13.30-14.00 The Importance of Cloud Platforms for Smart Solutions
The cloud is increasingly becoming an important element with regard to the delivery
of smart systems and intelligent solutions. As enhanced flexibility is demanded by
an increasing number of end users, the functionality inherent in cloud services can
play a greater role in delivering accurate insights in a timely fashion.
Jan Lindeberg, Milestone Systems, Senior Product Manager
14.30-15.00 The decentralisation of security systems
For many years, the topology of systems has centred around a centralised
approach, predominantly because the restrictions of legacy infrastructure didn’t
allow any other approach. Today’s technology allows a decentralised approach,
which in turn allows the design and implementation of more efficient systems.
Frank Graham, Mobotix, Regional Sales Manager - UK, Ireland & Benelux
15.30 – 16.00 The importance of VMS Rules
The creation of logical rules based upon rigger events and subsequent actions is
one of the most beneficial features of VMS solutions. This seminar looks at how
integrators and installers can use this functionality to create bespoke solutions
which deliver added value to end users.
Mark Ross, Cathexis Europe, Managing Director
16.30-17.00 Using Perimeter Systems for Early Warnings
Increasingly, end users want the earliest possible warning of potential intrusions,
allowing them to take action in a timely manner and address situations. This can be
achieved by moving the first line of detection to the perimeter of site, enhancing the
level of protection on offer.
Simon Reeve, Pyronix, Account Manager - North Midlands
Benchmark Seminar Programme
CREATING SMART SOLUTIONS
The evolving technological landscape now presents an increased level of flexibility to those designing,
specifying and implementing smart security and business solutions. Where once the investment in such
systems was something of a ‘grudge purchase’, the ability to deliver smart solutions adds value for the
customer, delivers a wider range of business benefits and, as such, enhances return on investment.
By exploiting the potential on offer from emerging technologies, integrators and installers can not only
differentiate themselves by offering more flexible and efficient systems, but can also ensure their solutions
not only meet, but exceed, the growing expectations of end users.
Audience: The Benchmark seminar stream will appeal to system integrators, security installers, specifiers and
consultants who are seeking to design and implement best-of-breed solutions which offer high levels of
security, smart functionality and a bespoke solution for today’s customers.
Benchmark Seminar Programme Day 2, 6th November
11.00-11.30 OSSA and IoT
OSSA has been formed by industry leaders to help create a unified approach for the industry with regard to the
adoption of IoT technologies. This seminar will outline how OSSA intends to achieve this, and what the benefits will
be for system integrators and security installers.
Daniel Vornefeld, Open Security & Safety Alliance, Vice President, and Bosch Security Systems, Director of
Business Development
12.00-12.30 Cybersecure Strategies
As advances in technology push system design into a more software-based sector, integrators and installers need
to implement defined strategies to address on-going threats and risks if customers are to view them as trusted
partners. This seminar will examine the best ways of achieving this.
Peter Ainsworth, Johnson Controls, Product General Manager, Video, Global, Building Technologies & Solutions,
13.00-13.30 Machine learning video analytics at the Edge
Metadata offers a valuable addition to video surveillance data, and can provide insights which provide both
security- and business-related advantages for many sites. This seminar will look at how metadata can be used to
enhance system performance in an effective and cost-efficient manner, increasing the overall return on
investment.
Andrew Pigram, Managing Director, Bosch Security & Safety Systems (UK) Ltd
14.00-14.30 How the correct balance of GPU vs CPU is transforming specialist server design in the IP
Surveillance industry
An insight into how cost effective GPU technology is gradually taking over the more CPU intensive tasks in IP
Surveillance. This seminar takes a look at GPU use in AI, recorder and client side decoding and mobile
transcoding creating cheaper but more powerful server technology.
Robin Hughes, Secure Logiq, Sales Director
15.00-15.30 The role of Big Data in surveillance
As security systems increasingly gather data that can be used for both security and additional site management
tasks, so there is a need to understand why different types of data, such as alphanumeric data and streaming
video footage, place different demands upon storage systems.
Jermaine Campbell, Seagate, Surveillance Head
PROMOTION
In the dark about light?
When securing a location, it’s not
uncommon to face challenging light
conditions, especially if you don’t have
easy access to artificial light sources. However,
there are technologies that allow you to easily
guard your perimeter, even in the dark.
Thankfully surveillance technology is not as
dependent on light as it was twenty years ago.
Below are three examples of technology which
enable detailed, sharp footage even in the worst
light conditions.
It’s all in the photons
Light is made of particles called photons. Our
eyes are naturally sensible to photons, they
record their presence and our brain puts
together a picture based on the information the
eyes collected. A visible-light camera works in
the same way. However, photons come in a wide
range of wavelengths, of which only a small
fraction of about 400 to 700 nanometers (nm) is
visible to humans and visible light cameras.
When the light is low, or near to none, there are
fewer photons that can reach our sensors,
therefore the brain and the visible light camera
computer don’t have enough information to
build a detailed picture.
The technologies listed here enable cameras
to optimise the way their sensors collect
information in the form of photons.
Lightfinder
As the name suggests, Lightfinder technology is
built to be very sensitive to the few visible light
photons in low light areas; thanks to a
combination of extremely sharp sensors and
carefully tuned image processing, cameras with
this technology can capture full-colour images
in extremely low light.
In fact, they can discern colour in low light
better than the human eye, which is particularly
important when images are used for forensic
purposes. The truer the colours, the better your
chances of identifying a subject.
This result is achieved by a combination of
optical components, such as a high-quality lens,
a custom-selected image sensor optimised for
surveillance, and digital image processing
algorithms embedded in the system-on-chip.
OptimisedIR
While Lightfinder is great for low light
conditions, when you need to secure an area in
total darkness, you may want to choose a
technology that can expand the wavelength of
photons it can capture. Enter OptimisedIR,
where IR stands for InfraRed.
Cameras that can use IR light for imaging
have so called “day-and-night functionality”, or
are “day-and-night cameras”, which means that
during the day, they employ visible light to
create pictures, but when light falls the night
mode is triggered which expands the camera
sensitivity to the infrared spectrum. This mode
expands camera sensitivity to the IR spectrum.
To achieve this, cameras can employ either
natural IR light, such as moonlight, or artificial
light, from incandescent light bulbs or a
dedicated IR light source, which can be built in
the camera for extra discretion. The footage IR
produces is not colourful, but in scales of grey.
Forensic WDR
We have seen a camera that sees in low light or in
darkness, but what if you have to deal with
extremely bright and extremely dark areas in the
same frame - for example, a tunnel or a parking
garage? In these situations, you can be forced to
optimise the settings for just on one of the areas,
potentially missing crucial details in the other.
When images are underexposed or
overexposed it can be impossible to identify
objects and people. The technology best fit for
this scenario is Forensic Wide Dynamic Range
(WDR), which solves the issue by applying
multiple exposure levels, contrast
enhancement, and advanced algorithms that
lower noise and increase the image signal.
Getting back to photons, this technology
assures that the camera doesn’t collect too
many photons from the brighter areas, while at
the same time reducing the noise resulting from
the low concentration of photons in the darker
ones. This way, you can place your cameras
exactly where you need them, with no need to
worry about difficult lighting.
Technology now allows cameras to go
beyond the performance of the human eye.
Andres Vigren, Global
Product Manager at
Axis Communications
looks at three
technologies that can
help you see in the
dark
You can place
cameras exactly where
you need them, with
no need to worry
about difficult lighting
INTERVIEW
Apprentices and accessibility
This month we talk to David Scott
from Skills for Security about how
training is vital for the future of the
fire and security industry
In August this year, the BSIA announced the
appointed of David Scott as the new
Managing Director of Skills for Security, the
body that provides access to apprenticeship
security training courses and security
qualifications for people employed in security
roles across the UK.
David most recently held the position of
Curriculum & Quality Manager at New College
Lanarkshire, where he worked for over eight
years. Having come through an apprenticeship
himself and qualified to degree level in both
teaching and management, David became an
accredited chartered manager with the
Chartered Management Institute.
PSI caught up with David just a few weeks
after his appointment to find out about his goals
and hopes for the UK fire and security industry
and how apprenticeships can be made more
accessible.
What are your aims for Skills for
Security?
My immediate objective is to steady the ship
and make sure that we are delivering a product
that is fit for purpose for the industry, its
customers, employers and students and to
make sure that the apprenticeship program we
have is not just good, but is the best in the UK.
This will be the focus of my first six months,
then further down the line my two- to three-year
strategy is to widen participation of the
apprenticeship, make people more aware of
what's involved in the programme and to make
training more accessible.
I've already started working on those
targets, but I think we are looking at a threeyear
period before we will see a change in
culture within the industry to get to a point
where people find training more accessible so
they can come on board without needing to
travel hundreds of miles every day. Ideally they
will be able to attend a local college or training
provider and access the same quality of training
as everyone else.
Why is there a
reluctance to
work in the
security sector?
I think the main
reason is that noone
actually knows
what a fire and
security engineer
does! If you
consider a school or
a career
fair/guidance class
not one person in
that situation is
thinking “I really
want to be a fire and
security engineer”
instead they want to
go university or
college and become
electricians, joiners
or doctors. No-one considers a job in this
industry when thinking about potential careers
and for me that has to be part of widening the
participation goal that I mentioned previously.
We're going to have to put a strategy in place
where we can target schools in terms of making
students aware that security is a career of
choice. They need to know how they can access
the industry and who the right people to speak
to are. This is where we can play a really
important part.
The lack of awareness about our industry is
quite surprising because people do tend to like
technology-based jobs and with the emergence
of IoT and networked security systems there
should be interest from younger generations.
The industry is worth around £1.5bn in the UK
alone so it's a massive industry with lots of
talent and technology and that's why I've
personally enjoyed it so much. I have been in
the industry for 15 years and I've just loved it
because each day is a challenge and there is a
learning curve with new products and standards
launching every day.
How can you raise awareness?
One of the projects that we are working on at
the moment sees us as the lead organisers of
“We're going to have
to put a strategy in
place where we can
target schools in
terms of making
students aware that
security is a career of
choice”
INTERVIEW
46
(continued from previous page)
“An apprenticeship isn't just for a young person anymore.
Apprenticeship funding from the government is actually for
anyone, from any background or of any age”
Skills for Security is a major
supporter of the Engineers of
Tomorrow competition
the World Skills competition, which is
essentially a competition for every single trade
you can think about including welding,
construction, electrical etc. Fire and security
trades have not been involved in the event
before, however on November the 21st and
22nd we will see the first-ever security
competition being run at World Skills at the NEC
and the benefit of us being there is it's going to
shine in a massive, positive light on what we do
as an industry. 70,000 people attend the event
with the aim of learning about careers and
finding out about new apprenticeships, so if we
can capture just 1% of that 70,000 we would
have 700 young people interested in a career
within the industry. As lead organisation we are
joined by CSL, Texecom and Hikvision who have
all put in a large sum of money each to support
the competition.
Are you going to be working with
installers and employers?
Yes, I'll probably be working more with
employers and installers across the board
because they are the people who will be looking
to take on apprentices. I've worked in education
for eight years and one of the biggest barriers
that we are up against is that there aren't
enough young people applying for jobs or are
interested in a career. If we don't solve that
problem, then we're not going to solve the
shortage we have in the industry. We have to
start with schools, but that will only be a small
part of my job, the main body of my role will be
to deliver a really high quality fire and security
product and to do this we need to make training
more accessible.
How are you going to do that?
I'm speaking to a lot of colleges across the UK
to try to strike up partnerships, because they
are suffering from the same problem as
employers in that there is a shortage of
engineers and they can't get anyone to come in
to deliver the training. We're asking the colleges
to deliver the core products of the
apprenticeship be that health and safety,
customer service skills, electrical principles etc
and Skills for Security will then deliver the fire
and security training part of the apprenticeship.
We're offering this partnership to colleges with
the aim of making training more accessible for
employers so that they don't have the high cost
of sending a student hundreds of miles a week.
If employers can do this then that itself will
hopefully boost recruitment.
What are you doing for installers with
experience?
An apprenticeship isn't just for a young person
anymore. Apprenticeship funding from the
government is actually for anyone, from any
background or of any age. People with years of
experience can still benefit from taking a funded
apprenticeship. Another programme we are
working on involves short commercial courses.
These will represent upskilling opportunities for
those that have been working in the industry
who might not want to do an apprenticeship due
to the time scales involved or might not be able
to regularly attend a training centre. Short
commercial courses will last for just one week
covering specific disciplines within the industry.
These will be ideal for those who have the work
experience but not necessarily any official
qualifications.
I recently did a presentation at a NSI
Regional Meeting and I was asked what we
were doing to help with vital skills not related
to fitting security systems, such as estimating
and team leadership. To meet this demand we
are now looking at including these types of
subjects into the short courses so we can focus
on the specifics of surveying fire and security
rather than people having to attend generic
courses.
What would you like to happen in the
security industry going forward?
I'd like to see apprenticeships and training
become a mandatory requirement. I would like
to see something similar to what we have with
licenced guards in that there is government
legislation that says in order to commission or
install a file alarm system you must have proven
a certain level of competence.
I'd also love to see thousands of apprentices,
colleges and training centres for studying and
learning about the fire and security industry. We
have only 340 apprentices in England at the
moment and 150 of them are enrolled with Skills
for Security. I would like to see those numbers
in the thousands with ourselves, Banhams,
Access, Hopwood Hall, Training 2000 and all of
the providers really succeeding in delivering
high quality training for industry with lots of
apprentices coming through.
Meet the installer
Security life with Angela Bennet &
Steve Snoddon of Diamond Systems
Name: Angela Bennett & Steve Snoddon
Job title: Joint Managing Directors
Time in security/fire: Angela – 11 years
Steve – 25 years
Company: Diamond Systems
Location: Belfast, Northern Ireland
Areas of expertise: Electronic security
and life safety systems
Accreditations: NSI Gold, BAFE, Safe T
Cert, N Viro Cert
The family behind the business: Angela,
Steve and dad Tom who founded the
business in 1987
What would be a typical project for you?
As specialists in fire and security systems for over
30 years, a typical project for us would be the
installation and commissioning of a large,
networked system, which fully utilises the skills
set of our experienced team.
What is the best thing about working in
security?
Protecting lives and property through intelligent
systems. We add value to a customers’ business
by providing solutions to problems that other
providers have been unable to resolve.
Is third party accreditation beneficial to
your company?
Beyond public sector procurement, there is not a
great deal of awareness of what third party
accreditation is, or the benefits of it. More needs
to be done to raise the profile of the accreditation
bodies, especially in Northern Ireland.
Are you concerned about Brexit?
In Northern Ireland, we are more concerned about
the lack of an Executive at Stormont, than we are
about Brexit, but yes, we have taken professional
advice and are prepared for Brexit as best we can
at this stage.
If you won £25,000 what would you do with
the money?
We would probably all go on a family holiday
somewhere very warm and relaxing. Working in a
family business means the whole family, whether
they are employed in the company or not, play
their part in the success of the business, so it
would be nice to treat everyone.
“We add value to a customers’
business by providing solutions
to problems that other providers
have been unable to resolve”
Do you think there is a skills shortage in
the industry? Any trouble recruiting?
In the past few years we have seen a good level of
interest in security apprenticeships, and that is
where we are mainly focussing our efforts in terms
of our engineering talent pipeline. But this hasn’t
happened by chance. We have been working with
schools in our area to raise awareness of the
qualification and offering work experience.
Are there any common requests from
customers that give you problems?
Within the new works side of our business, we
have to walk away from some projects because
we can’t meet contractors’ expectations when it
comes to price. It is not possible to deliver a good
quality project for a very cheap price, and we
would never lower our standards to win work.
Multi sensors protect European
history in Serbia
Following a €12 million refurbishment, the
National Museum of Serbia opened its doors to
the public last year. The historic building contains
over 400,000 precious objects, including many
foreign masterpieces and the museum is
protected by analogue multi sensors produced by
Hochiki Europe.
Decision makers at the museum needed a fire
detection system that would safeguard its
reconstruction. Set over six floors and housing
Emergency barricade provides
peace of mind at school
Kingsland School, in Kingstanding, Birmingham,
is one of the first to fit Lockdown from ERA. The
systems is an emergency barricade device able
to lock down a door in seconds in a crisis
situation, helping to protect school children.
Designed to provide security in the event of a
threatening situation, Lockdown is easy to fit,
making doors inaccessible to intruders and
creating a safe hiding place for students and
teachers in the event of an attack.
Lockdown’s design ensures it is stronger and
more robust than a regular lock as it secures the
full door, not just at one point. Additionally,
unlike a thumb turn lock, where the room can be
accidentally or mischievously locked by
students, Lockdown is always intentionally
deployed.
Carol Stephenson, school business manager
at Kingsland School said, “Security is becoming
much more of a priority within the education
system, especially for schools such as ours
which are located in deprived areas with high
crime rates.
“Having identified the need for something to
help us be more secure in a threatening
situation, our research highlighted Lockdown.
“Initially, we were attracted by how easy it is
to deploy something that was incredibly
important to us. We decided it was the right
product for our school of 327 pupils.’
ERA’s Head of Marketing, Tania Tams said,
‘Sadly with threatening situations becoming
600 employees as well as members of the public,
it was essential the chosen products could be
easily used and managed throughout large,
complex premises, providing a life safety
detection network. Being able to detect heat and
smoke simultaneously, the ACC-EN(SCI) offered
the protection needed to safeguard the various
artifacts stored throughout the museum.
The ACC-EN(SCI) is Hochiki Europe’s current
multi-sensor that features three modes of
operation incorporating the detection of fire
through either its optical elements, its thermal
element or both elements simultaneously, helping
reduce the risk of false alarms. It also
incorporates an integral short-circuit isolator,
developed for the European market. Negating the
need for special isolator mounting bases, the
devices are operated through a compatible ALPHA
2100 control panel from Quadel Doo.
Following the installation, Quadel Doo’s
technical director, Dejan Ciric, said: “Accessible
through a control panel, the device’s ability to
provide continual levels of protection and control
no matter the user’s location proved to be of great
benefit for the maintenance team at the museum.
We were also able to couple this with our
ALPHA2100 control panel which improved the
system’s functionality, and allowed us to
continually monitor and record the environment’s
temperature.”
more commonplace, schools are being
encouraged to plan for such emergencies.”
POWERFUL WEB BASED CONTROLLER
SIMPLE & EASY INSTALLATION

APPLICATION
Access control system installed
for marijuana grower
3xLOGIC recently announced that integrator
partner Harris Tec has installed an infinias access
control system for their customer.
Justin Harris or Harris Tec, based in Las Vegas,
said: “Our customer does local cultivation of
marijuana plants and marijuana production, which
means marijuana by-products. Cultivation and
production are in two separate parts of the facility
and require two separate licenses.”
On November 8, 2016, Nevada voters approved
Question 2, which legalises, regulates, and taxes
recreational marijuana throughout the state and
allows adults age 21 or older to possess up to one
ounce of marijuana and grow up to six plants
beginning on January 1, 2017. Marijuana is largely
a cash business and with high-value inventory
also on the premises, security is of utmost
concern for such an entity.
The facility is approximately 30,000 square feet
in size, and the infinias system manages access
for eight doors and an inventory cage. Except for
one exterior door, all other managed doors are on
the interior. Justin said: “I like the system’s
flexibility, we have it programmed to create a man
trap at the main entrance, so only one door can be
opened at a time. We can also do lock down with
the system automatically halting all ingress and
egress.
“My staff aren’t experts in all things access
control but they manage this system very well and
they’re able to leverage all the system’s
capabilities. By closely managing the interior
doors, we are making sure the 40+ employees are
going only where they are explicitly approved to
go.
Sustainable key management
solutions at College
Dundee and Angus (D&A) College has invested
in a new master key cylinder platform and key
management solution from the Assa Abloy Door
Hardware & Access Control Group, contributing
towards the college’s sustainability ambitions.
D&A College delivers over 700 courses to
around 16,000 students across three campuses,
with two main sites in Dundee and one in
Arbroath. It therefore required a robust master
key cylinder system that could securely manage
the high traffic using its facilities, while also
satisfying the college’s key control needs.
The college’s previous master key system
posed a risk because of the short-term patent
protection that it offered. In addition, the college
was seeking a better means of accounting for all
the master keys it has in circulation.
An Assa Triton² master key cylinder system
and Traka 21 key management cabinet have
recently been installed at all three of the
college’s campuses. Billy Grace, Head of Estates
at D&A College, explains: “Sustainability is a
key issue for the college, and we’re very proud of
the fact that we have achieved a 53 per cent
carbon reduction since 2009. We have heavily
“It is not practical to give out keys to the
facility, so we have to implement electronic access
control. And in this business, there is a good
amount of turnover, so it’s essential we are able to
program entry badges both on and off
immediately,” said Justion. The end user’s
employees are organised into several different
groups, each with different access privileges in
terms of day and time and location.
Harris Tec is the Managed Services Provider
(MSP) for the end user, performing day-to-day
system management, troubleshooting any issues,
making all changes to schedules and groups, and
turning badges on and off. System-generated
reports are used for trouble-shooting and on-site
security staff manage doors with an app installed
on a tablet.
invested in sustainable technologies, and the
decision to choose Assa Triton² is just the latest
development in this commitment. With the
patent protection on our previous master key
cylinder system soon running out, this posed a
substantial risk around key duplication. Assa
Triton² offers patent protection until 2036,
which is protecting us for the next 17 years
against unauthorised key copying. Key
personnel, such as our caretaking and
maintenance staff, can then easily use the Traka
21 system to help manage master keys across all
our three campus sites.
Networked camera system
protects Hockenheim circuit
The Hockenheimring south of Mannheim,
Germany spans nearly 97 hectares with a motor
racing circuit length of nearly five kilometers. The
grandstands have room for 120,000 spectators
welcoming more than 700,000 visitors a year.
Therefore, protecting people and property at the
events is of high priority. To achieve this, a
solution planned and implemented by Bosch
helps to prevent and investigate criminal offences.
A video security system with more than 64 IP
cameras monitors the entrances and exits, the
grandstands and adjacent areas, as well as the
entire racing circuit. The video solutions delivers
high-resolution images, also in challenging
lighting conditions.
All cameras are networked via a central video
management system. Among other things, the
police can access them live and via mobile links.
The video security system is also used to monitor
the 2,000 squaremeter motorsport museum, for
which Bosch additionally implemented a fire
alarm and intrusion detection solution to
safeguard its 300 historic racecars and
motorcycles. The Hockenheimring additionally
uses the video cameras as webcams and for
documenting long-term construction projects.
Hull to become first UK
programmable city
Hull will become the city first in the UK to
benefit from its own purpose built Smart City
Operating System (OS). Using an Internet of
Things (IoT) foundation to its digital strategy,
the CityOS platform provided by Connexin,
enables Hull to become a programmable city.
Connecting essential council services and
centralising information that can be analysed
and used to promote a better quality of life for
residents. Following the success of being
crowned the UK City of Culture 2017, Hull City
Council has forged a partnership with Connexin
to deliver its plans to make Hull a Smart City.
The Smart City OS will allow Hull City Council to
add and connect new smart, sustainable
technology solutions.
Described as the “Operating System of a
Smart City” Hull City Council will use Connexin’s
CityOS platform to integrate, view, manage and
respond to information from a range of council
services, sensors and systems, using a single
intelligent dashboard. Information from current
and future data producing deployments, such as
smart lighting, parking, traffic, waste
management and Wi-Fi deployments, are to be
integrated into the “single pane of glass”
software platform.
Councillor Daren Hale, Deputy Leader of Hull
City Council said: “Developing Hull as a Smart
City will give us the opportunity to work with
public and private sector partners to deliver real
benefits to communities, businesses and visitors
to Hull. The project will involve technological
solutions to enhance data-sharing and decisionmaking,
which will help us to deliver more
effective services, including everything from
traffic management to health and social care.
The system pulls together information that
currently sits within separate council computer
systems to enable city wide management of the
city’s public assets in real time. Residents will
receive better information to make choices
about transport, traffic and parking. But this will
be just the beginning of what is possible. As the
project develops, it will create a demand for new
digitally skilled workforce in the city, so we will
need to invest in skills and training for younger
generations so they are prepared for the new
types of jobs that will be created in the digital
sector.”
Furqan Alamgir, Founder and CEO of Connexin
said: “Our platform will enable Hull to become a
“programmable city” and move from outdated
siloed service driven technologies to a central
platform to improve service delivery, reduce
costs and to make the most of new technologies
such as IoT, AI and machine learning
algorithms.”
Connexin’s Smart City Operating System is
built around the Cisco Kinetic for Cities platform
which normalises and aggregates data from a
range of IoT sensor types into a certified set of
urban service domains such as waste, lighting
and parking.
