Housing Solutions
The need for suitable and affordable seniors
housing options is more prevalent today than
ever before. Abbeyfield House Society of
Lakefield hopes to provide a solution to the lack of
transitional housing, particularly in rural areas like
Selwyn Township within the County of Peterborough.
Abbeyfield House is a long proven concept and entity,
founded by Major Richard Carr-Gomm in England
in 1956. With both an International and National
governing body ASHL joins a worldwide network of
over 9000 residents living in 850 Abbeyfield Houses in
13 countries, including 21 in Canada.
AHSL is a community-based and volunteer-led
organization, currently governed by a volunteer
Steering Committee. Its task at hand is to secure
funding to build a family style house providing ideally
12-15 seniors an opportunity to continue living in their
home community.
ASHL aims to provide accommodation with a balance
between privacy and companionship, security and
independence, combined with a caring element
provided by dedicated volunteers and the support of a
House Coordinator.
The Steering Committee has worked with Selwyn
Township and its interested citizens to ratify the
building of an Abbeyfield House. They have liaised
with regional and provincial governments to align
with the senior housing plan crisis, developed a
comprehensive business plan as well as hosting two
successful Welsh Choir Concert Fundraisers.
