When Andy Mitchell, Chair of the Board of
Otonabee Conservation, speaks about the
work of the conservation authority, he
explains the benefits to watershed residents and to
the health of the local environment that sustains the
watershed community.
Under the Conservation Authorities Act, Otonabee
Conservation is responsible for furthering the
conservation, restoration, development and
management of natural resources in the watershed.
As Chair Mitchell explains, “It’s our mission to be a
leader and support a healthy, natural environment
through science, stewardship, education, policy and
community partnerships.”
Otonabee Conservation, established 60 years ago,
annually delivers a robust conservation program
to support a healthy natural environment where
communities thrive. Otonabee Conservation provides
important services including flood forecasting and
warning, permits and plan review for development,
floodplain mapping, tree planting, drinking water
source protection, education and watershed health
monitoring. In 2019, Otonabee Conservation will
complete the reconstruction of the Millbrook Dam –
the largest water control project in the conservation
authority’s history.
“We need natural resources like forests, wetlands,
shoreline buffers and floodplains if we want clean
water and a vibrant economy,” says Chair Mitchell.
“Investing in conservation is an investment in our
natural capital.”
Otonabee Conservation works in partnership with
local municipalities, government ministries and
agencies, community organizations and private
landowners. The Board of Directors approves an
annual conservation program and budget.
