Even though Tony and Kelly’s cottage on Stoney 

Lake wasn’t that old, dating from about 2000, 

the kitchen and dining room were small, dark 

areas, not conducive for entertaining. The couple, 

who live in the GTA, are looking to retire to the lake 

in a couple of years, and wanted to make it a more 

comfortable place in which to live and host their family 

and friends. 

“It’s pretty much open house all summer at our place, 

and we often have 35 people up, but the way the 

previous rooms were made it difficult to accommodate 

everyone,” says Tony. 

The couple wanted to remove a wall to enlarge the 

space and make it one open area that would flow into 

the adjacent great room. On the recommendation of 

friends, they chose Cabinetree for the project. 

“When we went into Cabinetree, it felt different – they 

spent time with us going over the options. We liked 

how they treated us and we were impressed by the 

wide array of selections in their showroom,” says Tony. 

Tony says it was an interactive process - the couple 

supplied information about styles they liked, with 

photos of kitchens they found online and ideas about 

where they thought the appliances should go. 

“Tony and Kelly brought their ideas and we helped 

them determine the best use of the space to make it 

functional and attractive,” says Beverly Wellington, 

Cabinetree Designer. “I crafted a layout with different 

work zones for baking, cooking, entertaining, along 

with a beverage station, that would also accommodate 

the flow of traffic. When I presented the plans to Tony 

and Kelly, they loved it, which made me so happy.” 

The space was then laser measured to the millimetre to 

ensure that all of the planned cabinetry and appliances 

fit. Beverly helped the couple select the cabinet style, 

colours, hardware, countertop and other features to 

create a cohesive look. 

“We were glad that we could bring home different cabinet 

colour samples, as the paint colours looked a little

different with the natural light in the cottage, compared 

to how they looked in the showroom,” continues Tony. 

The cabinets chosen are custom-made clean-lined 

Shaker-style doors with applied bead and a mix of 

glass and solid panels. The built-in cabinets and shelves 

are finished in Cabinetree’s own Morning Dew colour 

along with antique brushed nickel handles, to make 

an efficient use of the space. Clear leaded glass doors 

allow an attractive display of stemware. Unique features 

include the cabinet to the right of the oven which flips 

up to store small appliances, and the fridge, which is 

completely hidden by cabinetry for visual continuity. 

A large 10’ x 6’ eat-in maple island, stained in a warm 

grey Stone Henge, is the focal point of the new space, 

with seating for five or six people, a sink, dishwasher, 

and microwave, along with lots of storage. 

“The island is a gathering spot for our guests at 

breakfast time, with people sitting and milling around 

it,” continues Tony. “Cabinetree sourced one large slab 

of Vicostone’s Borghini Quartz for the top so that it 

didn’t have to be fitted in pieces.”

A bar/beverage centre at one end near the great room 

allows for ease of entertaining, with wine fridge and 

bottle storage, and a coffee and tea station. 

One of the original windows which was below counter 

height was reconfigured to match the other, and both 

now let in lots of light. The space is illuminated by 

LED lights on the ceiling, LED strips within and under 

the glass cabinets, and the overhanging glass-covered 

lights over the island that allow for clear sightlines 

throughout the main floor. 

“The new space is completely different – it’s night and 

day compared to how it was,” says Tony. “It’s so much 

brighter, more open and inviting, with more flow to the 

expansive great room. Cabinetree was great to work 

with, and they accommodated our schedule all through 

the process, including when we had a large party 

before all the work was completed! I would highly 

recommend them.” 

“This modern kitchen blends traditional elements with 

an elevated style for a bright, clean inviting space,” 

says Beverly.

Hobart’s is pleased to announce the opening 

of their third location, on Stoney Lake in 

Harbour Town, McCracken’s Landing. 

“We invite everyone to visit us by land or water to 

experience exceptional food, atmosphere and service 

in our casual dining restaurant,” says Wesley Found,

When Paul and Cathy purchased their 1958 

cottage in 2002, they were happy in it for 

many years, and renovated it to a certain 

point, but decided because it was small and not 

winterized, it would make more sense to rebuild. 

“We had seen a display of Discovery Dream Homes 

at a local event and met their representative Peter 

Henderson, who was most helpful,” says Paul. “We 

liked the layouts of their custom homes which were 

of a higher quality than what we had seen elsewhere.” 

Shawn Hunter, Director of Design at Discovery, 

worked with the couple on the plans for their new 

4,600 sq. ft. home. The couple liked Discovery’s 

“Lakes” model, and made some modifications to it to 

suit their needs. Constructed of pine post and beam, 

the five-bedroom home was built on three levels. 

To capture the lake views to the best advantage, the 

new timber frame home was built on land that was 

primarily bush and rock and a foundation space was 

blasted out of a rock shelf. The walk-out lower level 

is faced with a four-inch local granite, with wood 

siding on the upper two levels. 

The open concept main level consists of the great 

room with a high sloping ceiling of exposed pine 

beams that has become Discovery’s signature look. 

The granite gas fireplace, extending from the granite 

woodburning fireplace on the lower level, provides a 

focal point for the room. The dining area and eat-in 

island provide ample space for entertaining, along 

with a three-season room off the kitchen. The main 

floor also includes a laundry/pantry room off the 

kitchen, a powder room, the Master bedroom (with 

deck) and Master bathroom, as well as an office.

“We wanted all of our prominent rooms to face 

the lake and to have lots of light,” says Cathy. “And 

we didn’t want to paint the ceilings, so we chose 

naturally finished tongue and groove pine boards for 

the upper two levels.” 

The loft area overlooking the great room was 

modified from the original model to accommodate a 

bathroom for the two loft-level bedrooms, instead of 

each bedroom having its own bathroom, opting for 

extra storage off each bedroom instead. They also

modified the position of the stair case to run up the 

side to be as unobtrusive as possible. 

“One unique aspect of this home is the distressed 

wide plank pine floors,” says Shawn. “After the new 

floors were laid, gravel was spread over them so that 

when people walked on them, distinctive indentures 

were made on the floor. Then when the building 

was finished, the gravel was scooped up to reveal 

the floor, which now looks like 100 year-old barn 

board!” 

On the lower level is space for relaxing by playing 

pool in the rec room or sitting for a drink at the bar. 

There are two extra bedrooms and bathrooms on this 

level - the fourth is currently used as a gym and the 

fifth is another master with ensuite. 

The abundant decks and patios allow for maximum 

outdoor enjoyment, with a flagstone patio on the 

lower level, decks on the main level, accessed from 

the three-season room, the great room, and the master 

bedroom, and balconies on the upper floor bedrooms. 

The multiple windows throughout are Discovery’s 

elite energy-efficient double-paned windows made 

in Quebec that exceed building code requirements, 

contributing to the cottage’s coziness throughout the 

winter months. 

The three-car garage was built where the original 

cottage was located. The view from the new garage 

is reminiscent of the view from the original cottage 

and is a nice spot from which to view the sunset, 

according to Cathy. 

“We’re enjoying living up here full time now that I’m 

retired and are extremely happy with the end result,” 

says Paul. “Discovery Dream Homes and their general 

contractor, Ed Blekkenhorst, did excellent work.”

When Andy Mitchell, Chair of the Board of 

Otonabee Conservation, speaks about the 

work of the conservation authority, he 

explains the benefits to watershed residents and to 

the health of the local environment that sustains the 

watershed community. 

Under the Conservation Authorities Act, Otonabee 

Conservation is responsible for furthering the 

conservation, restoration, development and 

management of natural resources in the watershed. 

As Chair Mitchell explains, “It’s our mission to be a 

leader and support a healthy, natural environment 

through science, stewardship, education, policy and 

community partnerships.” 

Otonabee Conservation, established 60 years ago, 

annually delivers a robust conservation program 

to support a healthy natural environment where 

communities thrive. Otonabee Conservation provides 

important services including flood forecasting and 

warning, permits and plan review for development, 

floodplain mapping, tree planting, drinking water 

source protection, education and watershed health 

monitoring. In 2019, Otonabee Conservation will 

complete the reconstruction of the Millbrook Dam – 

the largest water control project in the conservation 

authority’s history. 

“We need natural resources like forests, wetlands, 

shoreline buffers and floodplains if we want clean 

water and a vibrant economy,” says Chair Mitchell. 

“Investing in conservation is an investment in our 

natural capital.” 

Otonabee Conservation works in partnership with

KLT prioritizes lands for securement that have 

significant ecological features such as: long natural 

shorelines along lakes and rivers; prairie remnants; 

alvars and limestone features; Oak Ridges Moraine; 

unique topographical features such as drumlins, 

eskers, and hilltops; large woodlands; major corridors, 

along with other landscapes and linkages. 

Kawarthas Naturally Connected 

The organization identifies significant properties 

and works with landowners to protect them in 

perpetuity. Through a recent grant from the Ontario 

Trillium Foundation there will be a focus on four 

areas of special interest: East of Kawartha Highlands 

Provincial Park and surrounding Stony/Clear/ 

White Lakes; Gannons Narrows; the Balsam Lake 

conservation corridor north to the Queen Elizabeth II 

Wildlands Provincial Park; and Fleetwood Creek near 

Bethany. 


The Kawarthas Naturally Connected (KNC) 

initiative is a program that identifies and maps 

environmentally important areas to reveal 

connected natural heritage systems of wetlands, 

forests, rivers, meadows and lake corridors. 

The KNC project involved more than 25 area agencies 

and organizations who worked together to identify 

and map a network of connected natural features. 

Kawartha Land Trust (KLT) was the lead partner for 

this program that has identified more than two dozen 

key areas in the City of Kawartha Lakes and the City 

and County of Peterborough. 

The natural heritage system mapping is available 

online for all to review and use in securing and 

stewarding regional and local lands. KLT uses the 

KNC mapping tool to address the urgent need to 

conserve and enhance significant and vulnerable 

natural heritage features in our region. 

Kawartha Land Trust currently protects 17 properties 

totaling 4,101 acres and assists in the management 

of five additional properties including one owned by 

Trent Severn Waterway – Parks Canada, according to 

Tara King, KLT Development Manager.

are committed, through the international Aichi 

Biodiversity Targets of the Convention on Biological

interests in land and engaging the community in 

support of this work to ensure that these lands are 

cared for, in perpetuity. 

KLT’s mission is: “Caring for lands entrusted to us 

and helping others protect the land they love.” They 

conduct their work with a staff of four, a board of 

directors, and a team of over 110 volunteers.

Blockbuster “Ice Age Mammals” Exhibition 

For the first time in its history, the Peterborough 

Museum & Archives (PMA) is hosting what 

is considered a blockbuster exhibition. On 

loan from the Canadian Museum of Nature is, “Ice 

Age Mammals” – a national travelling exhibition 

that explores themes of climate change and biology. 

This exhibition is making its final stop at the PMA 

before being taken off the market for refurbishment, 

meaning this will be one of the final opportunities to 

see all that “Ice Age Mammals” has to offer. 

In the exhibition, one can expect to see a variety of 

fossils and specimens including a real mammoth tusk, 

muskox furs, interactive learning stations, skulls of 

various mammals, and a skeleton cast of a mastodon! 

What makes this exhibition a blockbuster is the 

appeal that it will have to non-traditional museum 

visitors. It will provide an opportunity for local 

residents and tourists to the area to not only learn 

about the mammals that survived the ice age, and 

those that didn’t, but also to explore themes of global 

challenges related to climate change. This is a priority 

message of the City of Peterborough, and through this 

exhibition, the museum is able to share the goals of 

The Peterborough Museum & Archives presents: 

sustainability in a non-traditional forum, shedding 

light on the natural environment of today through the 

lens of the past. 

“Ice Age Mammals” is also physically larger than any 

other on-loan exhibition hosted at the PMA, meaning 

there is more to see in the museum. Part of what has 

made this possible is a series of renovations that 

began in 2010 and concluded in 2017. The Museum 

Renewal Project included rejuvenation of all public 

spaces, the construction of a 9,000-square-foot storage 

facility, and improvements made to preservation and 

exhibition environments. The completion of this 

construction project increased the number of 

opportunities the PMA can leverage when thinking 

about programming and booking exhibitions. “Ice Age 

Mammals” is the PMA’s first kick-at-the-can hosting a 

blockbuster exhibit, with (hopefully) more to come in 

the future!

your sense of adventure to the many activities 

offered by the Canadian Canoe Museum this 

summer.

Some spaces are still available for their Summer 

Paddling Adventure day camps and multi-day canoe 

trips for youth age 8 to 14, where campers learn skills 

from Ontario Recreational Canoeing and Kayaking 

Association-certified instructors in a fun, safe and 

supportive environment while interacting with nature, 

developing their paddling skills and enjoying the lakes 

and rivers in the Kawarthas.

this summer, including the Peterborough Pulse 

street festival, the Muskoka Heritage Boat Show in 

Gravenhurst and local farmer’s markets – be sure to 

come over and say hello,” says Hyslop.

Down at the Peterborough Liftlock, the museum’s 

voyageur canoe tours take guests for paddles up 

and over the Liftlock north along the Trent-Severn 

Waterway for a 90-minute fun and engaging ride 

suitable for all ages and abilities. Scheduled tours 

are available on weekends and custom tours can also 

be booked for up to 20 people by emailing paddle@ 

canoemuseum.ca or by calling 705-748-9153 ext. 218. 

Currently on display is Just Add Water: Little Boats 

with BIG Stories featuring canoes from noteworthy 

people, including Robert Bateman’s Minto canoe and 

Gordon Lightfoot’s canary yellow canoe, along with a 

Fijian Takia boat, and the stories behind these vessels. 

Meanwhile, the museum is planning for its new facility 

at the water’s edge, estimated for completion in 2022. 

Come visit the museum itself to learn about the 

importance of the canoe and kayak to not only the 

local area but to the history of Canada. The museum 

has the largest collection of its kind and displays 

more than 100 canoes and kayaks ranging from 

First Nations’ dugouts and Beothuk bark canoes to 

canvas canoes made in Peterborough. These are all

When Art and Maureen moved into their 30 

year old home five years ago, they knew 

the kitchen needed to be redone. Art says 

it was the most inefficient kitchen he’d ever seen, 

with no cupboard space, so that much of the kitchen 

stuff had to be stored elsewhere. Once they decided 

to go ahead with a new kitchen, the couple did some 

research and investigated several companies. 

“We liked the drawings that Buchanan Kitchen & Bath 

drew up for us the best, taking into account our wish 

list,” says Art. 

Steve Buchanan removed the old kitchen and opened 

up the space to accommodate their needs. 

“We eat mainly in the dining room, so there was no 

need for an island or a table in the kitchen, which 

freed up space,” says Art. “My wife likes to watch TV 

while I cook, so Steve had a TV built into the cabinets 

– works for us!” 

Art says he likes to totally immerse his grill in the 

sink, so Steve installed a deep single undermounted 

sink to fit it. 

Designer Tammy helped the couple in choosing the 

colours. For the custom Cabico cabinets, they selected 

a textured grey and brown melamine finish. The

details such as soft-close doors and drawers, fullextension 

wood dovetail drawers, and solid backs in 

every cabinet. Cabico has a stringent environmental 

policy and all of their products are CARB2 compliant 

as they also ship to California. The upper cabinets are 

push open for ease of use, with handles just on the 

lower ones. 

To complement the cabinets, the couple selected a 

white quartz with grey veins for the countertops, 

and grey wall tile for the backsplash. Where there is 

exposed wall, they chose a flannel grey colour. Maple 

hardwood flooring, which adds warmth to the area, 

extends throughout the kitchen into the main floor 

with a finish that Art says is virtually invisible and 

looks like sanded wood and is good to last between 

15 to 20 years. Alex from Meistercraft Wood Flooring 

repaired and re-finished the floors. 

“Steve did a beautiful job,” continues Art. “All of the 

tradespeople he brought in were expert craftsmen 

and totally skilled at their jobs.” 

In the previous kitchen, the microwave was too high 

and hard to reach, as the couple are both “height 

challenged”, so the new placement suits them better, 

mounted below the cabinets. It’s finished in a burnished 

stainless steel, as are the new fridge and stove. 

“Steve and Tammy put a lot of thought into designing 

this beautiful, unique kitchen, which we absolutely 

love. They were so good to work with,” says Art. 

“It turned out to be spectacular - it’s so much more 

efficient now, with lots of storage space.” 

“Art and Maureen are a lovely couple who spend a lot 

of time in this space, so it was important to us that 

it fitted their needs perfectly,” says Steve Buchanan. 

“I’m so glad they have a new, comfortable kitchen for 

them to enjoy.”

Carol and Lawrence’s 40 year-old cedar cottage 

on Lake Catchacoma was worn and dark 

and needed to be upgraded or replaced. As 

renovating it was going to be too expensive, they 

decided to have a new home built by Linwood Custom 

Homes. 

“We had seen the work of Angela Jones of Lakeshore 

Designs on a Prince Margaret Lottery Linwood home 

and loved the look she created, so we decided to 

engage her for the interior design,” says Carol. 

“We had a consultation with Carol and Lawrence, who 

said they liked our Lakehouse style and wanted their 

home to be as lovely as our Princess Margaret Homes. 

This full-build project was exciting for us and we 

proceeded with a full furniture layout, colour palette, 

stylings, and customized architectural details such as 

the rustic ceiling beams,” says Angela. 

Angela and her team organized and coordinated all 

aspects of the project, including arranging for the 

tradespeople, ordering and staging the furniture, 

selecting the flooring, countertops and other finishes, 

and measuring and placing the various components, 

with minimal inconvenience to the clients. 

The colour palette Angela chose is light and fresh with 

white ship lap on the ceiling, soft neutral linens in the 

furnishings and finishes, that complements the light 

airy space. 

“The colour scheme is fabulous and I loved how 

Angela’s choices brightened the space, with Coventry 

Grey on the lower level and Linen Grey on the upper,” 

says Carol. 

The open concept main level boasts a cathedral 

ceiling in the living room facing the lake. The great 

room flows into the dining area and kitchen with 

eat-in island. The hardwood engineered flooring 

from Monaghan Lumber was chosen for its ease of 

maintenance and dog friendliness. 

Angela and team selected all of the furniture, including 

the creamy linens and oatmeal oversized sectional 

sofa in a transitional style for the living room, and 

the charcoal blue-grey sectional that fills the space 

in the lower level. Other elements such as chairs, 

coffee tables, a circular dining room table with cream 

upholstered chairs, and unique décor items, such as 

paintings, area rugs, lamps, and mirrors, all contribute

decorated with a slatted cream headboard, matching 

chest of drawers and complementary bedding. “We love 

waking up in the morning in our comfortable nest with 

the sun streaming in the window,” says Carol. 

The bright laundry area, accented in whites and blues, 

is conveniently located off the kitchen and pantry. 

“There is a walk-out lower level with four bedrooms 

and two bathrooms. A cottage theme for this space 

with custom bunk/loft bed with two queens built by 

cabinetmaker Jeff Chandler,” says Angela. 

The three-season Sunspace room off the dining room 

with its floor-to-ceiling windows is furnished with 

a rattan patio set and matching area rug. “I am just 

blown away by the end result,” says Carol. “Angela and 

her team pulled all the details together from beginning 

to end – we’re so happy with how it turned out.” 

“I’m so pleased with Carol and Lawrence’s dream 

home, I want to move in myself!” says Angela. “They 

were a lovely couple to work with.”

With a few more months of boating left, 

the summer is a good time to review 

some important safety tips before 

heading out with friends and family on the water, 

says Susan Mellow, Public Relations Officer with the 

Peterborough Power and Sail Squadron. There is 

nothing better than an enjoyable stress-free day on 

the water to create a lifetime of memories. 

“Sometimes we become complacent after boating for 

a few months and need to be reminded to keep safety 

a top priority,” says Mellow. 

She says that before leaving the marina, make sure 

all required safety equipment for your vessel size is 

accessible during an emergency and that everyone is 

wearing a correctly sized approved Personal Flotation 

Device (PFD). It is a fact that most boating-related 

drowning victims are not wearing a PFD and they 

are within a few feet of safety on inland waters. The 

Canadian Safe Boating Council has a very good short 

pre-departure checklist video that can be found by 

visiting www.csbc.ca. 

“Also remember to check the weather and get the 

latest marine forecast for your area,” she continues. 

“Often storms can whip up quickly with summer 

daytime heating and heading for safety is the best 

course of action.” 

Mellow recommends that the day before heading 

out you get out your paper charts and go online to 

check the Notice to Mariners, posted by the Canadian 

Coast Guard, to update charts, buoy placements, radio 

aids, as well as sailing directions for pleasure craft 

boaters. Notices are published monthly for eastern 

and western areas in Canada and can be accessed by 

visiting www.notmar.ca. 

“There can be changes in the water course, such 

as buoys removed for maintenance, or because of 

changing water levels, and you want to make sure 

that your charts are up to date,” she says. “Remember 

to have all your important documents handy including 

insurance, boat ownership, Pleasure Craft Operator 

Card (PCOC), VHF/DSC licence and any other marine

it is recommended that you enrol in the squadron’s 

CPS-ECP courses. The Pleasure Craft Operator Card 

from CPS-ECP is accredited by Transport Canada and 

is the only PCOC recognized by the U.S. Coast Guard. 

Also the squadron will be offering several other 

courses this fall including Boating 2 – Beyond 

Boating Basics for those who have the PCOC and 

want to learn more about navigation and safety 

skills, anchoring, working with ropes including lines 

and knots, what to expect when your boat is under 

power, and more. Boating 3 – Introduction to Marine 

Navigation takes place immediately afterwards and 

carries on with navigation knowledge, how to plot 

paper charts, the skipper’s duties before setting out 

and while underway, handling of the boat under 

sail, environmental responsibilities relating to grey 

water, recycling, and animal habitat, tides, currents, 

and more. Both courses are held once a week in the 

evenings for five to six weeks. More details will be

Things To Do This Summer! 

There is lots to see and do this summer in the 

beautiful North Kawartha Lakes, in between 

relaxing dock time or fantastic fishing and 

boating on the pristine lakes.

July 1: Fireworks in Norland at Ward Park – begin at 

dusk. 

July 13 & 14: the Norland Summer Festival features 

vendors/crafters and displays and the amazing 50 

ft. inflatable obstacle for children and inflatable for 

toddlers all weekend long. Saturday showcases the 

horseshoe tournament, lob ball tournament, and the 

ever-popular Roast Beef dinner with the Crazy Loonies 

game to follow. Sunday features the return of the 

popular Redneck Ruckus Demolition Derby by Impact 

Motor Sports (with new bleacher seating) and new this 

year…the Rat Rod Car show.

For the historian in the group, the Balsam Lake Dry 

Stone Wall is a fantastic example of a Scottish dry 

stone wall still intact today and built by George 

Laidlaw in the 1870s, and the historic Lime Kilns still 

overlooking Coboconk remind us of how limestone 

played a crucial part in the village’s history. Canada’s 

Smallest Jail in Coboconk also has some interesting 

stories to tell. 

Last, but not least, a must-see is the Kirkfield Lift Lock. 

Built in the early 1900s, it physically raises and lowers 

to move boats through a change in elevation on the 

Trent-Severn Waterway and has a number of features of 

interest to bridge enthusiasts. It is an amazing feat of 

engineering.

This season Cottage Toys is celebrating their 30th 

anniversary of carrying everything needed for 

fun times on the water. And to include their 

online and in-person customers in the festivities, they

artists is Tim Packer who has earned a solid

Meyer’s Landscaping has been creating

“Sometimes with neighbours’ high decks, it can feel as 

if you’re living in a fish bowl,” he continues. “By adding 

trees, shrubs and flowers, we can create privacy, colour 

and interest to your yard to make it less sterile.”

The need for suitable and affordable seniors 

housing options is more prevalent today than 

ever before. Abbeyfield House Society of 

Lakefield hopes to provide a solution to the lack of 

transitional housing, particularly in rural areas like 

Selwyn Township within the County of Peterborough. 

Abbeyfield House is a long proven concept and entity, 

founded by Major Richard Carr-Gomm in England 

in 1956. With both an International and National 

governing body ASHL joins a worldwide network of 

over 9000 residents living in 850 Abbeyfield Houses in 

13 countries, including 21 in Canada. 

AHSL is a community-based and volunteer-led 

organization, currently governed by a volunteer 

Steering Committee. Its task at hand is to secure 

funding to build a family style house providing ideally 

12-15 seniors an opportunity to continue living in their 

home community. 

ASHL aims to provide accommodation with a balance 

between privacy and companionship, security and 

independence, combined with a caring element 

provided by dedicated volunteers and the support of a 

House Coordinator. 

The Steering Committee has worked with Selwyn 

Township and its interested citizens to ratify the 

building of an Abbeyfield House. They have liaised 

with regional and provincial governments to align 

with the senior housing plan crisis, developed a 

comprehensive business plan as well as hosting two 

successful Welsh Choir Concert Fundraisers.

A: ““It depends on the shoreline, size of the lake, and 

other factors,” says Jeff Ball, owner of Kawartha Docks.

Q: What safety and security features should 

I keep in mind while selecting a new 

overhead garage door? 

A: “New garage door openers and doors have many more safety 

features than in the past,” says Ron Beausoleil, owner of the Overhead 

Door Company of Peterborough. “They are much more sensitive and 

have a reverse system should they come in contact with an object, pet 

or small child while going up or down.” 

New electronic units come equipped with photo-eye sensors that 

have a reversing mechanism, a feature that has been mandatory since 

1996. And new doors are “pinch proof” which means that your fingers 

won’t get jammed between the door panels if you’re lifting or closing 

it manually. 

In terms of security, Beausoleil says new electric operators have a 

remote system with a rolling code which can’t be duplicated, and 

that new garage doors are constructed of heavy duty materials that 

deter burglars. Even if the doors have small windows, he says that 

it’s uncommon for a break-in to take place through a garage door 

window. If you’re concerned about security, you can always have 

frosted or tinted windows installed.

“Our heated saltwater pool is available seven days a 

week all year round, and is kept at a balmy 92 degrees

aquafit classes and open swim times to keep everyone

The indoor atrium with a cathedral ceiling lets in 

copious amounts of light, making it seem like summer 

all year long. Filled with live plants and trees, residents 

can have fun playing billiards or shuffleboard with 

others, have a game of cards or find a quiet spot beside 

the fireplace to read a book. 

Three meals a day are provided in the dining 

room where residents can socialize together. The 

broad, seasonal menu is prepared with the freshest 

ingredients by qualified chefs. Families are invited to 

join residents for delicious, home-cooked meals. 

“We have lots of organized activities such as yoga, 

dance classes Pilates, Tai Chi, yoga, meditation, Nia, 

indoor Nordic pole walking, Falls Prevention, Super 

Seniors, where they exercise with weights, and Better 

Balance with the aim of promoting strength, endurance 

and agility,” continues Beaudoin. “Our gym has a 

range of Keiser exercise equipment, with tread mills, 

cycling trainers, sit-down cardio machines and more. 

Our Wellness Coordinator organizes a full program of 

fitness classes.” 

In the mentastics exercise class, residents sit down 

and do gentle movements to keep both their bodies 

and minds active. There is also programming about 

nutrition, to ensure that seniors’ bodies are wellfuelled.
