on November 7 to 10 at the
SMX Convention Center
Manila and the World Trade
Center Metro Manila, and will
also have three expansion
tents in WTCMM and an
outdoor display area for heavy
equipment at the Ipil-ipil lot of
the CCP Complex Grounds,
making this the biggest edition
of the show to date.

one of PCA’s ways of serving
industry needs,” shared Morris
Agoncillo, president of PCA.

How to Choose the Right Paint and
Color for Your Home
Building your dream house is not an easy
task; painting your dream house is a whole
different story. The color of both your
exterior and interior walls says a lot about
the vibes of your entire house. But while it is easy to
look at the broad array of color options in the
hardware store, picking the best ones to fit your
house might not be as easy.
Whether it’s your first time or your second, the
paint job is not always a piece of cake. But you need
not worry about that anymore. Here are a few tips
and tricks to help you in decorating
(or redecorating) your home.
Pick your room color starting from the
largest and most centrally located room.
The biggest part of the house is always a great place
to start imagining what your color palette would
look like. It can be either your living room or
kitchen. A soft, neutral hue for this room, like the
colors of Rain or Shine’s ROS Classic, will make the
color selection a lot easier for you. From there, it
should be easy to move on to the next spaces in the
house.
Create a palette with colors of the same hue.
Once you’ve settled on the color of your main

Separate the downstairs and upstairs rooms.

When the air conditioning system in
the office is faulty, you must decide
between investing in a replacement
or spending for another costly
repair. Whether these units have been performing
poorly from the get-go or are nearing the end of
their lives, these air conditioning systems, at their

How it all started
PHILCONSTRUCT was first
launched in 1990 through the
Philippine Constructors
Association’s (PCA) president,
J.V. Angeles. President Angeles
was known to have lots of
uncertainties about the
exhibition; however, he still gave
the go signal to finally unveil the
event. Back then, it was called the
‘Philippine Construction
Equipment and Building
Materials Exposition’ and was
eventually changed to
PHILCONSTRUCT. For four
years, the event was held every
March in the ballrooms of Hotel
Nikko Manila (now Dusit Thani
Manila). Participating companies
were less than a hundred at that
time.
In 1995, the event was moved to
November at the newly opened
EDSA Shangri-la Hotel in
Mandaluyong City to coincide
with PCA’s Golden Anniversary
Celebration. In the same edition,
the first Technoforum Seminar
Series was held. It was also in the
same year where the
Association of Carriers and
Equipment Lessors, Inc. (ACEL)
joined PCA through displaying a
variety of construction
equipment at the expo.
After two years,
PHILCONSTRUCT finds a new
home at the World Trade Center
Metro Manila (WTCMM), giving
it more than 1,400 square meters
of exhibition space. The show
indeed looked better, but despite
the progress and the upgrade, the

event was not making enough
to cover its expenses,
PHILCONSTRUCT is facing a
financial struggle.
In 2004, PCA was undeniably
at the brink of canceling the
PHILCONSTRUCT show for
good. PCA has always had a great
vision for this event, but at that
time, that vision was not quite
translating into reality. PCA was
ready to quit at that moment, but
then decided to give it one last
shot and awarded the project to a
new events team – Global-Link.
It was also in the same year that
PCA launched Estilo de Vida.
Regardless of the possibility of
losing more than the association
can handle, PCA still pushed
through an inter-school interior
design competition, through the
leadership of Mr. Jorge Consunji.
Estilo de Vida has now become
an annual competition that is
always looked forward to by
students from different
prestigious universities and
colleges.
It was hard to cope up, find
sponsors, look for participants,
reach the right people, and
convince associations and
related organizations that this
is the platform for them, but
the event slowly recovered and
made it bigger a little year after
year. In its 16th edition, the event
received recognition from the
public sector and had the Vice
President Noli de Castro lead its
opening rites. In the next year,

the event began expanding its
products range by co-locating
HVAC/R, which led to drawing
more industry-related
professionals.
When the SMX Convention
Center at the Mall of Asia
Complex was built in 2008,
PHILCONSTRUCT moved its
exhibition, and at this time has
a total of 30,000 square meters
of exhibition space. The Manila
show is now starting to bloom. It
continued growing by connecting
with the Cebu Contractors
Association, Inc. and Davao
Contractors Association Center,
Inc., which then launched Cebu
and Davao editions of
PHILCONSTRUCT
respectively in 2010.
As the regional shows flourished,
Manila is reaping a successful
turn out as well. In 2013, SMX
Convention Center can longer
accommodate the participants
of the expo. Thus,
PHILCONSTRUCT utilized both
SMX Convention Center and
World Trade Center Metro
Manila with a total of 33,600
square meters of indoor
exhibition space and 15,000
square meters of outdoor
exhibition space accommodating
more than 1,000 exhibitors.
To celebrate its 25th year in 2014,
PHILCONSTRUCT’s Manila
edition grew even bigger by
adding up the Philippine Trade
Training Center (PTTC), which
gave the show 3,000 square
meters more of exhibition space.
In the year 2016, it was full of
celebration and rejoicing, as for
the first time, all three venues of
the Manila show were completely
sold out. The developments and
growth were constant each year,
and the committee behind the
show always ensures that
PHILCONSTRUCT can offer
something new for the industry.
PHILCONSTRUCT Today
For its 30th year,
PHILCONSTRUCT widened its
reach by holding the first Luzon
edition of the expo in Clark,
Pampanga, last March. Aside
from the expo, a series of
seminars, and different industry
competitions, the show also

hosted the launch of the
Philippine Construction
Industry Roadmap for 2020
to 2030, together with the
Department of Trade and
Industry (DTI). Our Cebu and
Davao show also posted
record-breaking numbers as they
each celebrate their 10th year
anniversaries in June and
September.
Both the SMX Convention
Center Manila and World Trade
Center Metro Manila venues
were completely sold out! Aside
from occupying the two biggest
venues in the country, three
expansion tents at the WTCMM
were added, and we also moved
our outdoor exhibit at the Ipilipil
lot of CCP Complex Grounds
making this the biggest edition of
the show to date, covering over
100,000 square meters of
exhibition space in total.
A special focus was also exerted
for this expo to have foreign
exhibitors to showcase new
technologies and solutions that
our local practitioners should
consider utilizing. For one, we
have a New Technology Pavilion
by the European Union. About
30 exhibitors from all over
Europe are coming over to be
part of this. The expo will have
participating companies from
China, India, Korea, Japan,
Jordan, Malaysia, Singapore,
Spain, Taiwan, Vietnam, and the
United States as well.
Since PHILCONSTRUCT is
not just an expo, various
Technoforum seminars,
workshops, and Skills/Demo
Olympics will be held coinciding
with the show. To name a few, the
editor at large of World of
Concrete USA, Rick Yelton, will
be back to lead the third edition
of Concrete Construction

Seminar Series. ACEL will also
hold different CPD accredited
seminars for Civil and Mechanical
Engineers. There are free
seminars for industry
professionals hosted by the
European Union, as well. All

The exciting future of
PHILCONSTRUCT
PHILCONSTRUCT will surely
continue to expand and reach
more industry players in the
country. We have already started
to partner with the Department
of Trade and Industry (DTI) and

regards to the Philippines
Construction Industry Road
Map 2020 to 2030, and with that,
we will continue to monitor the
progress and use this platform to
spread knowledge on its direction
for the coming decade, and the
important role industry
professionals play in turning this
vision into reality.

builders globally competitive by

2019 Event Chairman
The first time I got involved in
organizing PHILCONSTRUCT
was when I was appointed
chairman of its Technoforum,
which is what we call the
educational program and
seminars held alongside the
exhibit. That was in 2008. I never
really thought I would be given
the chance to play an even bigger
role in the event in the future.
In 2012, I was appointed the
overall event chairman. The first
time was a big challenge already
in itself but back then, we only
had the SMX Convention
Center to think about for the
Manila show. When I got
reappointed in 2018, the show
had already expanded into twice
the size as the 2012 edition. So at
this point, I’m thinking it would
not be enough to just fulfil the
basic duties of the chairman. I
personally challenged myself to
step up, try, and contribute
something a bit more.
It was in 2018 when we started
elevating the lobby design of
the show. We also launched our
own mobile app. We went really
aggressive on strengthening the
brand and making it even more
attractive to exhibitors and
visitors. Seeing the response we
got from those initiatives has
been very fulfilling.
As head of a construction
business myself, I have a
first-hand account of the
struggles contractors face. One of
those is not having access to new,
cutting-edge technologies that
are already being used in other
countries. Our event
committee really made it one of
our priorities to showcase new
tech from around the world
so that hopefully they will get
picked up by local distributors
and become more accessible to
our fellow contractors.
Luckily, we have friends from
around the globe who share the
same goal with us, and we were
able to get the European Union
for the first time to showcase new
tech and solutions from their
top manufacturers. We are also
flying in speakers from the US,
UK, and South Korea to share
their knowledge and best practice
advise on a wide range of topics.
This is on top of local expert-led
seminars that we regularly have
at PHILCONSTRUCT.
For the first time, we also have
the Skills Olympics which will be
held at our much bigger outdoor
display area. We will have rebar
tying, scaffolding, and painting
competitions and demos. That
will surely make for an exciting
experience for our attendees.
For me, more than anything, this
is like giving back to the industry
that has served me so well. I have

found a lot of success in this field,
in my career, and I think it’s only
right to do my part in further
contributing to its growth.
People will look at the
PHILCONSTRUCT show this
November and see how
impressive it is. While it’s true
that I am the event chairman this
year, I don’t take credit for that
success. I am only here chairing
an extraordinary event because
so many other chairmen before
me have put in a lot of hard
work, time, passion, and effort
into making it the success that it
is today. These are people who,
even before PHILCONSTRUCT
became a huge success, already
believed in its vision and have
done their part in making sure
it stays true to its mission of
being an event that unifies this
industry. We owe it to them to
make this 30th edition deliver its
purpose. Having great numbers
is great, but for us, having quality
exhibition which caters exactly to
what the nation builders need, is

How to Find The Magic of
Industry 4.0

The continent where everything
started for humanity is set to
reassert its position in our
future. In sub-Saharan Africa,
the population is projected to
double by 2050. In fact, in the
next 30 years the world’s
population is set to grow by an
incredible 2bn – an increase of
more than 25% - and a large
portion of that growth will be in
sub-Saharan Africa. This
exponential population growth
comes at a time when the largest
demographic for this region will
be of working age – a fact that
points to the potential for huge
economic growth. Growth,
incidentally, that will be
championed by the digital
generation.
I believe that when it comes to
industry 4.0, the true potential
of your enterprise is not in what
it does, but what it can do. The
potential of your team is not
what they can do today, but what
they could do in the future. The
opportunity doesn’t lie in what
we know, it’s in what we don’t
know yet.
The rate of change in the modern
world is staggering and it shows
no sign of slowing down – in fact,
it is speeding up. Industry 4.0 is
both an example of this, and a
result of it. Digital
transformation is at the heart of
fundamental societal changes
that are emerging. In the region
that I lead for Rockwell
Automation – specifically the
Middle East, Turkey and sub-
Saharan Africa – there are huge
changes in progress.
Let’s start with the Middle East.
It’s an area that is no stranger to
change, with great cities having
risen from the deserts – as well as
great economies. And the
industrial change in the area now
is one of rapid diversification
as whole new industries are
envisioned at national levels and
realized at break-neck speeds.
Turkey, the ancient empire(s),
bridging Europe with Asia,
bridging tradition with future,
bringing cultures together, is
another market with enormous
potential and possibilities for
growth, always in a cycle of
changes and reinventing itself.
The opportunities for industrial
enterprises in these regions are
evident. There is no doubt that
the enterprises meeting the needs
of the new markets by leveraging
Industry 4.0 technologies and
strategies are the ones that will
succeed.
For most enterprises though,
leveraging Industry 4.0
technologies requires strong
change management capacity. It
requires learning new skills
rapidly, investing in the
workforce, investing in new
approaches, systems and
technologies. It requires
embracing disruptive
technologies – and often it will
entail being a positive disruptor.
Finding the Magic
We’ve probably all seen the
diagram of two circles that don’t

overlap, where one is labelled
“your comfort zone” and the
other is labelled “where the magic
happens.” It’s one of those that
you look at and instantly
recognize the truth of – and
perhaps with a tiny sinking
feeling as you realize that maybe,
you should get out of your
comfort zone a little more.
The implicit message of that
diagram is that “magic” requires
change. It is something I believe
very strongly, and I’m inspired by
the words of Walt Disney (who
knew more than most about
magic): “If you can visualize it,
if you can dream it, there’s some
way to do it.”
I can’t think of a better message
for industrial enterprise leaders
in this era of change. We stand
with the makers, the doers, the
builders; the innovators. Our
most successful customers in
adopting industry 4.0 approaches
have taken the step of visualizing.
They have dreamed of what could
be done. By coupling this human
ingenuity and innovation with
the power of machines and
Rockwell Automation solutions –
we always find a way to do it.
That’s where the magic of
Industry 4.0 happens. Take a look
just outside your comfort zone,
the benefits are close at hand, but

KONE wins order to equip second phase of
Finland’s West Metro extension
KONE, a global leader in the elevator and escalator
industry, has won an order to supply elevators and
escalators for the second phase of one of Finland’s
biggest infrastructure projects, the West Metro
extension in the Helsinki metropolitan area. KONE
also delivered solutions for the first phase of the
project, where the metro line was extended
westward from Helsinki into the neighboring city
of Espoo. The second phase will add a further seven
kilometers of metro line and five new underground
stations on the Espoo side of the line.
KONE will deliver 27 KONE MonoSpace®
elevators, four new-generation KONE inclined
elevators, and 42 KONE TransitMaster(TM) 140
escalators to West Metro. All the equipment has
been designed for heavy public transport use, and
the elevators can also be used in case of fire.
“Many of the technical requirements of the West
Metro are not visible to passengers. The elevators
and escalators are visible, and they are an important
part of the metro journey, the customer experience
and accessibility at the stations,” says Länsimetro
Oy Chief Executive Officer Ville Saksi.
Länsimetro Oy is the main developer of the project.
The West Metro will also use the cloud-based
KONE 24/7 Connected Services maintenance
solution. Utilizing the IBM Watson built on IBM
Cloud platform and other advanced technologies,
it monitors, analyzes and displays in real time vast
amounts of data gathered by sensors connected to
elevators and escalators. This means less equipment
downtime, fewer faults, and the availability of
detailed information on maintenance work.
“Thanks to our newest solutions, we can offer
increasingly better value to the West Metro and
increasingly smoother people flow for the people
using the metro. We are pleased to be able to use
the know-how gained through our extensive
experience of major infrastructure projects around
the world at the new West Metro stations,” says

The installation of elevators and escalators is
scheduled to begin at the end of 2019. The second
phase of the new metro line is expected to be

• Laying glass or ceramic mosaic in swimming pools,
storage tanks, etc., or even on absorbent surfaces.
• Laying glass or ceramic mosaic on flexible surfaces
(plasterboard panels, reinforced cement, cement fibre,
wood or derived materials, provided they are well
fastened).
TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS
Isolastic is a very fluid, pinkish-white liquid composed of a
water dispersion of an extremely elastic polymer which,
when mixed with cement based adhesives, improves
adhesion to all substrates, deformability and
impermeability, once hydration has taken place.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Kerabond, Kerabond T, Kerafloor or Adesilex P10 mixed
with Isolastic must never be used for:
• installing stone slabs subject to moisture movement;
• installing marble or natural stone subject to efflorescence
or staining from moisture;

Arup wins contract to complete Malaysia’s
first major Rail Asset Condition Survey (ACS)
Kuala Lumpur, 15 October 2019 – Arup has been
appointed by the Malaysian Mass Rapid Transit
(MRT) Corporation to perform the first major
railway asset condition assessment in the country
with a contract value worth close to RM2.7mil. The
commission will examine the condition of assets on
the Sungai Buloh-Kajang Line (SBK Line) and will
also provide a basis for a more holistic and
proactive approach to asset management.
Arup will assess the current asset condition and
their rates of deterioration, providing a basis for
proactive asset management in future. Arup will
also help MRT Corporation develop its strategic
asset management framework to enhance the line’s
performance through a more joined up approach.
The 51km KVMRT SBK Line opened fully in July
2017. It runs underground for a distance of 9.5km
beneath the center of Kuala Lumpur while the rest
of the alignment is elevated. It has 31 stations of
which seven are underground. Each train serving
the line has four cars, allowing a total capacity of
1,200 passengers.

The European project
Digital Water City (DWC) aims

and Utilitalia. Professor Fatone
explains, ”Digital technology

The world we live in today is one that’s moving constantly toward
new innovations and greater tech dependency. We’ve seen the rise of
services that allow you to place orders for meals and groceries,
experienced ride sharing’s transition from horror story to everyday
utility, and watched as streaming services took over television. It’s not
the first thing we think about as we consider these changes, but in all
of these instances physical venues and product stand to suffer as a
result of innovation. And when we think of things this way, another
industry comes to mind as one that’s approaching a crossroads of
sorts in its ongoing digital revolution. Internet-based casinos have
become so sophisticated, and so widely available, that it’s become fair
to wonder if in-person alternatives can continue to survive.
That’s an open question, but thinking of it from a creative engineering
standpoint, there’s more than a glimmer of hope for these traditional
commercial venues.

How Casinos Can Survive
Casinos have long attracted crowds of people all over the planet, for
a number of different reasons: bright, exciting visuals, a positively
charged atmosphere on location, and of course, the dream of earning
boatloads of cash. But with online gambling opportunities
improving so rapidly, some of those attractions are becoming
decidedly less special. Exciting visuals? These are easily replicated by
modern casino gaming graphics, if not improved upon. The chance to
risk and win real money? This is, if anything, more convenient
online, and with more options at hand. This doesn’t mean people
won’t continue to enjoy in-person casino floors, but it does mean
casinos that want to continue thriving may have to emphasize other
aspects of their appeal. And the things not even the best of the best
online platforms can compete with are atmosphere and physical
impact.
To some extent we’re already seeing casinos acting on this. There does
appear to be more emphasis being placed on live attractions, from
shows to restaurants run by celebrity chefs. And some of the newer
casinos in places like Las Vegas are clearly built with beauty and
luxury as the first priorities, and gaming merely a feature. These
trends, subtle though they may be, are likely to continue, and the
thinking here is that they can be enhanced significantly by bold and
exciting engineering projects.
To explain this idea, look back at a previous post you may have seen
here regarding Dubai’s push to attract more tourists. The famously

innovative city is constructing the world’s largest ferris wheel,
adding yet another engineering marvel to an impressive list that’s
been amassed over a relatively short time period. Now think about
this in the context of attractions like The Venetian Macau’s artificial
canal network, or the miniature New York City at the New York, New
York in Las Vegas, or even the sky-scraping infinity pool at the
Marina Bay Sands in Singapore. All of these are effectively
engineering and design achievements that have come to define
casinos already, and in some cases entire towns!
This, given all of the digital takeover potential described above, is
what casino owners and operators will need to be thinking about in
the next five, 10, or 15 years. Just another casino resort - even a
beautiful and luxurious one with a massive gaming floor - is
unlikely to offer much specifics appeal to the modern gamer who’s
used to digital convenience and sees nothing special in an in-person
slot machine or poker table. However, what if a new Vegas
establishment hired an engineering team to beat out Dubai’s new
ferris wheel? What if a major European city challenged the highest
skyscraper in its country with a new casino resort? What if a country
built an artificial island incorporating ferry service to a faux-tropical
casino venue? These features and attractions can still make an impact
that online gaming can’t match.
It’s for this reason that we might expect a significant push toward
innovative and daring engineering in this particular space.
