Experts in the
construction industry
have projected a
significant increase in
its contribution to the
Philippine economy to P130
trillion by 2030. Launched
earlier this year at the
Luzon edition of
PHILCONSTRUCT organized
by PCA in Clark, Pampanga,
this higher-grossed roadmap
the brainchild of both the
Department of Trade and
Industry (DTI), the
Construction Industry Authority
of the Philippines (CIAP), and
the Philippine Constructors
Association (PCA).
30th PHILCONSTRUCT to
Highlight New Technologies
in Construction
New innovations and
machines will play a
critical role in construction
development. Truly, these
newer items have the
capability of revolutionizing the
construction ecosystem and
facing the challenges of the
industry. “PHILCONSTRUCT
gives industry decisionmakers
and buyers to connect
with suppliers and
manufacturers from both
here and abroad in one
convenient venue, cutting
down on the time to connect
with each company on a
personal basis.” said Gerry
Pancho, overall event
chairman and 1st vice
president of PCA.
Turning 30 this year,
PHILCONSTRUCT will be held
on November 7 to 10 at the
SMX Convention Center
Manila and the World Trade
Center Metro Manila, and will
also have three expansion
tents in WTCMM and an
outdoor display area for heavy
equipment at the Ipil-ipil lot of
the CCP Complex Grounds,
making this the biggest edition
of the show to date.
“More than putting together
sellers and buyers in one
venue, PHILCONSTRUCT is
one of PCA’s ways of serving
industry needs,” shared Morris
Agoncillo, president of PCA.
That is why foreign exhibitors
will demonstrate and
showcase the new
technologies in their array and
recommend solutions to the
local practitioners.
“PHILCONSTRUCT is no
longer just a trade expo. We
have come a long way from
simply being a showcase of
products and machinery,”
added Pancho, who firmly
believed that the
PHILCONTRUCT brand’s role
has grown from being the
mere salesman of tools, into
the paragon of ease of living.
By advocating this, those at
PHILCONSTRUCT will not only
transform the industry, but the
nation as well.
Those interested to visit may
log on to
www.philconstructevents.com
before October 31 to get a
free 1-day pass. The 30th
PHILCONSTRUCT will occupy
both the SMX Convention
Center Manila and the World
Trade Center Metro Manila,
featuring more than 2,500
brands from 23 countries.
How to Choose the Right Paint and
Color for Your Home
Building your dream house is not an easy
task; painting your dream house is a whole
different story. The color of both your
exterior and interior walls says a lot about
the vibes of your entire house. But while it is easy to
look at the broad array of color options in the
hardware store, picking the best ones to fit your
house might not be as easy.
Whether it’s your first time or your second, the
paint job is not always a piece of cake. But you need
not worry about that anymore. Here are a few tips
and tricks to help you in decorating
(or redecorating) your home.
Pick your room color starting from the
largest and most centrally located room.
The biggest part of the house is always a great place
to start imagining what your color palette would
look like. It can be either your living room or
kitchen. A soft, neutral hue for this room, like the
colors of Rain or Shine’s ROS Classic, will make the
color selection a lot easier for you. From there, it
should be easy to move on to the next spaces in the
house.
Create a palette with colors of the same hue.
Once you’ve settled on the color of your main
room, all you need to do now is to select the shades
of the same hue for your walls and adjacent rooms.
This will make the building of your palette easier
and faster. Simply move on the next shade of that
particular color and you’re done! The advantage of
this trick is that you’re sure that the final colors of
the rooms will blend well together.
10

Separate the downstairs and upstairs rooms.
When you’re working on two or three-story
houses, it is best to work on the colors of both levels
separately. Feel free to create one mood or theme
for the downstairs space and another mood for the
upstairs space. This will create a diversified vibe in
your home and will not make it look
monotonous.
Use neutral colors for connecting spaces.
Halls and landings are best painted with neutral
colors such as white, greige, or beige. This will put
the highlights in the colors of the room and not on
the blank spaces in between. However, if you chose
the mentioned colors for your rooms, then the
connecting spaces should be painted with hues that
are about a shade or two darker from the colors of
your room.
Whether you’re looking forward to finally adorning
your new home with inspirational colors or just
simply want to redecorate your house and conceal
ugly cracks and spaces, Rain or Shine Paint is ready
to serve all your painting needs. Select from a wide
variety of colors of the ROS Classic or the ROS
Hi-Gloss for your interior paint. For your exterior
walls, you can count on ROS Dirt Shield and ROS
Hydro Lock to keep your walls free from leaks and
cracks and prolong the exterior beauty of your
house.
FEATURE STORY
Advantages of Installing Multi Variable DC
Inverter VRF System in PH Buildings
When the air conditioning system in
the office is faulty, you must decide
between investing in a replacement
or spending for another costly
repair. Whether these units have been performing
poorly from the get-go or are nearing the end of
their lives, these air conditioning systems, at their
current state, cannot efficiently serve their purposes
in the Philippines’ urban environment any longer.
That being said, a Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF)
air cooling and conditioning system is one of the
must haves in cooling the places the average,
ordinary, everyday working Filipinos frequent.
Compared to traditional HVAC systems composed
of a large central unit pumping out air to a whole
new space, VRF system installations are gaining
traction to urban locations. And, if one thing is for
certain, there are countless business districts and
high-rise buildings all around the metro just
waiting to be cooled by a more efficient air
conditioning system. This urban setting is perfect
for the more efficient
TMV5 is a new generation of multi-VRF systems,
integrating central air conditioning.
Having a TOSOT TMV-5 VRF system in the
facility, whether it’s the most peaceful resort or the
busiest casino in the metro, has a handful of
advantages. These advantages can be surmised to
overall operational efficiency, which is important
for the facility visitors’ comfort and the least
harmful to the wallet.
While efficiency and cost effectiveness alone is
enough to attract any facility owner, here are 5
detailed reasons why the TOSOT TMV-5 VRF is a
crystal clear front-runner compared to other HVAC
systems for the Philippine urban setting.
14

1. It does not interrupt the comfort of others
A VRF system’s compressor unit is able to identify
the requirements of each area and expel the exact
amount of refrigerant needed to cool that room
or area. The precision of these systems stamps out
awkward cold spots, hot spots, and corrects off
humidity issues. The TOSOT TMV-5 VRF steps it
up by using an All DC inverter technology to
improve compression efficiency
2. It is as silent as a breeze
Instead of having one large, noisy central unit, the
TOSOT TMV-5 VRF system is a quiet outdoor and
indoor unit. They are much smaller and generate
less sound. Since a VRF’s louder condensers are
located outside the building, these contraptions
operate silently, ensuring a quiet environment for
visitors and workers alike.
3. It is energy efficient
With up to 22 HP in a single outdoor unit and the
ability to connect a maximum of 80 sets indoor
units per system, you can cool more rooms at a
lesser cost with the TMV-5. The system is also able
to intercept heat and, as part of the cooling process,
channel this heat to other locations in the building,
which may need heating. This cyclical process is
another indication of the VRF’s cost-effectiveness.
4. It is clean, compact, and takes little space
In response to the many minimalists and Marie
Kondos who praise a clean, decluttered design,
facility owners would be happy to know that these
VRF systems are small-space friendly and have a
beautiful, near seamless design. It will blend with
the environment, operating effectively while
staying invisible to the public eye. And, if you needs
to move, this system also travels lightly. You can say
goodbye to large maintenance room, service shafts,
distribution pips, and water pumps. Lacking these
results in an overall easier installation experience
and a cleaner look. Still in the theme of cleanliness,
The TOSOT TMV-5 VRF system also has
an eco-friendly R410a refrigerant, lessening your
carbon footprint while making you comfortable.
5. It talks to you
Everything utilizes smart technology nowadays, so
it should come as no surprise that even air
conditioning and cooling systems are jumping on
that technological trend. TOSOT TMV-5 VRF
system boasts ease of use and a smooth user
experience with technologies such as nonpolar
CAN technology to improve communication
efficiency and season setting and key card control
functions for added security. These features allow
users a less cluttered, less complex experience with
the VRF system. It is like talking to the system itself.
So, whether you own a little coffee shop in one of
the nooks and crannies of urban Manila, or looking
over the rest of the world from atop a corporate
building floor, you can rest easier knowing the
cold breeze you are feeling right now is thanks to
a TOSOT TMV-5 VRF system somewhere in the
building.
Being a nation builder is one
thing, serving the nation builders
is another story. In three decades,
the trials, detriments, and
misfortunes anyone can
experience can lead to downfall,
and PHILCONSTRUCT
was not an exemption.
PHILCONSTRUCT was not an
instant success. Its 30-year story
is full of ups and downs; it has
been moments filled with fun,
excitement, frustration, tears,
and overall worthwhile
experience. Such is the story of
PHILCONSTRUCT - Southeast
Asia’s longest-running and
undoubtedly the Philippines’
biggest construction industry
expo.
C O V E R S T O R Y
How it all started
PHILCONSTRUCT was first
launched in 1990 through the
Philippine Constructors
Association’s (PCA) president,
J.V. Angeles. President Angeles
was known to have lots of
uncertainties about the
exhibition; however, he still gave
the go signal to finally unveil the
event. Back then, it was called the
‘Philippine Construction
Equipment and Building
Materials Exposition’ and was
eventually changed to
PHILCONSTRUCT. For four
years, the event was held every
March in the ballrooms of Hotel
Nikko Manila (now Dusit Thani
Manila). Participating companies
were less than a hundred at that
time.
In 1995, the event was moved to
November at the newly opened
EDSA Shangri-la Hotel in
Mandaluyong City to coincide
with PCA’s Golden Anniversary
Celebration. In the same edition,
the first Technoforum Seminar
Series was held. It was also in the
same year where the
Association of Carriers and
Equipment Lessors, Inc. (ACEL)
joined PCA through displaying a
variety of construction
equipment at the expo.
After two years,
PHILCONSTRUCT finds a new
home at the World Trade Center
Metro Manila (WTCMM), giving
it more than 1,400 square meters
of exhibition space. The show
indeed looked better, but despite
the progress and the upgrade, the
22
event was not making enough
to cover its expenses,
PHILCONSTRUCT is facing a
financial struggle.
In 2004, PCA was undeniably
at the brink of canceling the
PHILCONSTRUCT show for
good. PCA has always had a great
vision for this event, but at that
time, that vision was not quite
translating into reality. PCA was
ready to quit at that moment, but
then decided to give it one last
shot and awarded the project to a
new events team – Global-Link.
It was also in the same year that
PCA launched Estilo de Vida.
Regardless of the possibility of
losing more than the association
can handle, PCA still pushed
through an inter-school interior
design competition, through the
leadership of Mr. Jorge Consunji.
Estilo de Vida has now become
an annual competition that is
always looked forward to by
students from different
prestigious universities and
colleges.
It was hard to cope up, find
sponsors, look for participants,
reach the right people, and
convince associations and
related organizations that this
is the platform for them, but
the event slowly recovered and
made it bigger a little year after
year. In its 16th edition, the event
received recognition from the
public sector and had the Vice
President Noli de Castro lead its
opening rites. In the next year,

the event began expanding its
products range by co-locating
HVAC/R, which led to drawing
more industry-related
professionals.
When the SMX Convention
Center at the Mall of Asia
Complex was built in 2008,
PHILCONSTRUCT moved its
exhibition, and at this time has
a total of 30,000 square meters
of exhibition space. The Manila
show is now starting to bloom. It
continued growing by connecting
with the Cebu Contractors
Association, Inc. and Davao
Contractors Association Center,
Inc., which then launched Cebu
and Davao editions of
PHILCONSTRUCT
respectively in 2010.
As the regional shows flourished,
Manila is reaping a successful
turn out as well. In 2013, SMX
Convention Center can longer
accommodate the participants
of the expo. Thus,
PHILCONSTRUCT utilized both
SMX Convention Center and
World Trade Center Metro
Manila with a total of 33,600
square meters of indoor
exhibition space and 15,000
square meters of outdoor
exhibition space accommodating
more than 1,000 exhibitors.
To celebrate its 25th year in 2014,
PHILCONSTRUCT’s Manila
edition grew even bigger by
adding up the Philippine Trade
Training Center (PTTC), which
gave the show 3,000 square
meters more of exhibition space.
In the year 2016, it was full of
celebration and rejoicing, as for
the first time, all three venues of
the Manila show were completely
sold out. The developments and
growth were constant each year,
and the committee behind the
show always ensures that
PHILCONSTRUCT can offer
something new for the industry.
PHILCONSTRUCT Today
For its 30th year,
PHILCONSTRUCT widened its
reach by holding the first Luzon
edition of the expo in Clark,
Pampanga, last March. Aside
from the expo, a series of
seminars, and different industry
competitions, the show also
23

hosted the launch of the
Philippine Construction
Industry Roadmap for 2020
to 2030, together with the
Department of Trade and
Industry (DTI). Our Cebu and
Davao show also posted
record-breaking numbers as they
each celebrate their 10th year
anniversaries in June and
September.
Both the SMX Convention
Center Manila and World Trade
Center Metro Manila venues
were completely sold out! Aside
from occupying the two biggest
venues in the country, three
expansion tents at the WTCMM
were added, and we also moved
our outdoor exhibit at the Ipilipil
lot of CCP Complex Grounds
making this the biggest edition of
the show to date, covering over
100,000 square meters of
exhibition space in total.
A special focus was also exerted
for this expo to have foreign
exhibitors to showcase new
technologies and solutions that
our local practitioners should
consider utilizing. For one, we
have a New Technology Pavilion
by the European Union. About
30 exhibitors from all over
Europe are coming over to be
part of this. The expo will have
participating companies from
China, India, Korea, Japan,
Jordan, Malaysia, Singapore,
Spain, Taiwan, Vietnam, and the
United States as well.
Since PHILCONSTRUCT is
not just an expo, various
Technoforum seminars,
workshops, and Skills/Demo
Olympics will be held coinciding
with the show. To name a few, the
editor at large of World of
Concrete USA, Rick Yelton, will
be back to lead the third edition
of Concrete Construction
26

Seminar Series. ACEL will also
hold different CPD accredited
seminars for Civil and Mechanical
Engineers. There are free
seminars for industry
professionals hosted by the
European Union, as well. All
the other seminar details can be
viewed through the official
website of the show
The exciting future of
PHILCONSTRUCT
PHILCONSTRUCT will surely
continue to expand and reach
more industry players in the
country. We have already started
to partner with the Department
of Trade and Industry (DTI) and
Construction Industry Authority
of the Philippines (CIAP) with
regards to the Philippines
Construction Industry Road
Map 2020 to 2030, and with that,
we will continue to monitor the
progress and use this platform to
spread knowledge on its direction
for the coming decade, and the
important role industry
professionals play in turning this
vision into reality.
We will aim to make our local
builders globally competitive by
continually bringing the latest
technologies from around the
globe, and we will stay true to our
goal of serving the nation
builders, for the simple reason
that PHILCONSTRUCT is a
show by the industry, for the
industry.
In the words of Engr. Gerardo
Pancho, PHILCONSTRUCT
2019 Event Chairman
The first time I got involved in
organizing PHILCONSTRUCT
was when I was appointed
chairman of its Technoforum,
which is what we call the
educational program and
seminars held alongside the
exhibit. That was in 2008. I never
really thought I would be given
the chance to play an even bigger
role in the event in the future.
In 2012, I was appointed the
overall event chairman. The first
time was a big challenge already
in itself but back then, we only
had the SMX Convention
Center to think about for the
Manila show. When I got
reappointed in 2018, the show
had already expanded into twice
the size as the 2012 edition. So at
this point, I’m thinking it would
not be enough to just fulfil the
basic duties of the chairman. I
personally challenged myself to
step up, try, and contribute
something a bit more.
It was in 2018 when we started
elevating the lobby design of
the show. We also launched our
own mobile app. We went really
aggressive on strengthening the
brand and making it even more
attractive to exhibitors and
visitors. Seeing the response we
got from those initiatives has
been very fulfilling.
As head of a construction
business myself, I have a
first-hand account of the
struggles contractors face. One of
those is not having access to new,
cutting-edge technologies that
are already being used in other
countries. Our event
committee really made it one of
our priorities to showcase new
tech from around the world
so that hopefully they will get
picked up by local distributors
and become more accessible to
our fellow contractors.
Luckily, we have friends from
around the globe who share the
same goal with us, and we were
able to get the European Union
for the first time to showcase new
tech and solutions from their
top manufacturers. We are also
flying in speakers from the US,
UK, and South Korea to share
their knowledge and best practice
advise on a wide range of topics.
This is on top of local expert-led
seminars that we regularly have
at PHILCONSTRUCT.
For the first time, we also have
the Skills Olympics which will be
held at our much bigger outdoor
display area. We will have rebar
tying, scaffolding, and painting
competitions and demos. That
will surely make for an exciting
experience for our attendees.
For me, more than anything, this
is like giving back to the industry
that has served me so well. I have

found a lot of success in this field,
in my career, and I think it’s only
right to do my part in further
contributing to its growth.
People will look at the
PHILCONSTRUCT show this
November and see how
impressive it is. While it’s true
that I am the event chairman this
year, I don’t take credit for that
success. I am only here chairing
an extraordinary event because
so many other chairmen before
me have put in a lot of hard
work, time, passion, and effort
into making it the success that it
is today. These are people who,
even before PHILCONSTRUCT
became a huge success, already
believed in its vision and have
done their part in making sure
it stays true to its mission of
being an event that unifies this
industry. We owe it to them to
make this 30th edition deliver its
purpose. Having great numbers
is great, but for us, having quality
exhibition which caters exactly to
what the nation builders need, is
the best.
I would like to end this by
expressing my deepest gratitude
and appreciation to all the men
and women who became part of
PHILCONSTRUCT for the last
three decades. Let me say thank
you for not giving up. If not for
the commitment and willingness
they have dedicated to this show,
it would not be as big as it is
today. Their sacrifices have truly
inspired not only me, but
everyone in the industry to give
back. Indeed, this is the only
trade exposition done not for
personal gain, but the industry. It
has always been for the industry.

30TH PHILCONSTRUCT TO HIGHLIGHT NEW
TECHNOLOGIES IN CONSTRUCTION
difference between winning and
losing projects.
Projections by industry
experts indicate that the
construction industry
will further increase its
contribution to the economy to
P130 trillion by 2030 under its
roadmap. The roadmap was
crafted by the Department of
Trade and Industry (DTI) in
collaboration with the
Construction Industry Authority
of the Philippines (CIAP) and the
Philippine Constructors
Association (PCA). It was
launched earlier this year at the
Luzon edition of
PHILCONSTRUCT organized by
PCA in Clark, Pampanga.
Innovation in construction
development is going to play a
crucial role under this roadmap.
The construction ecosystem now
has focus on finding solutions
to the many challenges faced
by the industry. “This is where
PHILCONSTRUCT’s role as the
industry sourcing show becomes
very important,” said Gerry
Pancho, overall event chairman
and 1st vice president of PCA.
“PHILCONSTRUCT gives
industry decision-makers and
buyers to connect with suppliers
and manufacturers from both
here and abroad in one
convenient venue, cutting down
on the time to connect with each
company on a personal basis.”
PHILCONSTRUCT, which
celebrates its 30th anniversary
this year, will be held on
November 7 to 10 at the SMX
Convention Center Manila and
the World Trade Center
Metro Manila. Aside from the
two convention centers,
PHILCONSTRUCT will also
have three expansion tents in
WTCMM and an outdoor display
area for heavy equipment at the
Ipil-ipil lot of the CCP Complex
Grounds, making this the biggest
edition of the show to date – over
100,000 sq. meters of exhibition
space is being targeted.
While it’s true that the
construction industry presents
many opportunities for business,
the need to stay on top of the
game is becoming even more
imperative as this could spell the
“More than putting together
sellers and buyers in one venue,
PHILCONSTRUCT is one of
PCA’s ways of serving industry
needs,” shared Morris Agoncillo,
president of PCA. “This year, we
have put special focus on getting
foreign exhibitors to showcase
new tech and solutions that our
local practitioners should
consider utilizing. For one, we
have a New Technology Pavilion
by the European Union. About
30 exhibitors from all over
Europe are coming over to be
part of this.”
Another important highlight of
this year’s PHILCONSTRUCT is
a showcase of the Philippine
Construction Industry Roadmap
2020 to 2030. This showcase,
which is being prepared in
partnership with the DTI and
CIAP, aims to spread knowledge
about the four pillars of the
industry, its direction for the
coming decade, and the
important role industry
professionals play in turning
this vision into reality.
Pancho added,
“PHILCONSTRUCT is no longer
just a trade expo. We have come
a long way from simply being a
showcase of products and
machinery. This event is deeply
grounded and rooted in PCA’s
mission as nation builders to
unify the industry and ensure
42

that we are all playing our
respective roles in not only
making it globally competitive.
Our belief is that by improving
the practice of construction, we
are able to create and build better
structures, infrastructures, and
communities which hopefully
will create a ripple effect in the
way Filipinos live, work, and
play. Our hope here is that by
transforming the industry, we are
transforming the nation.”
Those interested to visit may log
on to www.philconstructevents.
com before October 31 to get a
free 1-day pass. The 30th
PHILCONSTRUCT will occupy
both the SMX Convention
Center Manila and the World
Trade Center Metro Manila,
featuring more than 2,500 brands
from 23 countries. This will
include its co-presenter
Pacific Paint (Boysen)
Philippines as well as major
sponsors CW Home Depot,
Panasonic, Mitsubishi, Civic
Merchandising, and Isuzu.
43

The World Trade Center Metro Manila will once again be filled with the latest machinery and
equipment for building and construction
Meanwhile, visitors can expect a packed showcase of building materials, tools, interior products,
and more at the SMX Convention Center Manila
PHILCONSTRUCT to feature manufacturers of building materials and HVAC & R technologies
from Korea
46

Taiwan will also have a country pavilion at the expo featuring a wide range of tech for smart cities
This year’s outdoor display of heavy equipment and machinery will be at the Ipil-ipil Lot in CCP
Complex Ground to give way to three expansion tents which will be put up specifically for
PHILCONSTRUCT at the World Trade Center
Rick Yelton, editor-at-large of the World of Concrete USA, will be back for the third edition of the
Concrete Construction Seminars held under the banner of PHILCONSTRUCT
47

“More than putting together sellers and buyers in one venue, PHILCONSTRUCT is one of PCA’s
ways of serving industry needs,” shared Morris Agoncillo, president of PCA.
Gerry Pancho, overall event chairman and 1st vice president of PCA, said, “PHILCONSTRUCT
gives industry decision-makers and buyers to connect with suppliers and manufacturers from
both here and abroad in one convenient venue, cutting down on the time to connect with each
company on a personal basis.”
The 22nd edition of HVAC/R Philippines has now become a certified industry event, carrying the
latest technologies in ventilating, cooling and refrigerating technologies. The show will be
incorporated with PHILCONSTRUCT once again
How to Find The Magic of
Industry 4.0
By Sebastien Grau, Regional Sales Director Middle East,
Turkey, Sub Saharan Africa, Rockwell Automation.
The continent where everything
started for humanity is set to
reassert its position in our
future. In sub-Saharan Africa,
the population is projected to
double by 2050. In fact, in the
next 30 years the world’s
population is set to grow by an
incredible 2bn – an increase of
more than 25% - and a large
portion of that growth will be in
sub-Saharan Africa. This
exponential population growth
comes at a time when the largest
demographic for this region will
be of working age – a fact that
points to the potential for huge
economic growth. Growth,
incidentally, that will be
championed by the digital
generation.
I believe that when it comes to
industry 4.0, the true potential
of your enterprise is not in what
it does, but what it can do. The
potential of your team is not
what they can do today, but what
they could do in the future. The
opportunity doesn’t lie in what
we know, it’s in what we don’t
know yet.
The rate of change in the modern
world is staggering and it shows
no sign of slowing down – in fact,
it is speeding up. Industry 4.0 is
both an example of this, and a
result of it. Digital
transformation is at the heart of
fundamental societal changes
that are emerging. In the region
that I lead for Rockwell
Automation – specifically the
Middle East, Turkey and sub-
Saharan Africa – there are huge
changes in progress.
Let’s start with the Middle East.
It’s an area that is no stranger to
change, with great cities having
risen from the deserts – as well as
great economies. And the
industrial change in the area now
is one of rapid diversification
as whole new industries are
envisioned at national levels and
realized at break-neck speeds.
Turkey, the ancient empire(s),
bridging Europe with Asia,
bridging tradition with future,
bringing cultures together, is
another market with enormous
potential and possibilities for
growth, always in a cycle of
changes and reinventing itself.
The opportunities for industrial
enterprises in these regions are
evident. There is no doubt that
the enterprises meeting the needs
of the new markets by leveraging
Industry 4.0 technologies and
strategies are the ones that will
succeed.
For most enterprises though,
leveraging Industry 4.0
technologies requires strong
change management capacity. It
requires learning new skills
rapidly, investing in the
workforce, investing in new
approaches, systems and
technologies. It requires
embracing disruptive
technologies – and often it will
entail being a positive disruptor.
Finding the Magic
We’ve probably all seen the
diagram of two circles that don’t
54

overlap, where one is labelled
“your comfort zone” and the
other is labelled “where the magic
happens.” It’s one of those that
you look at and instantly
recognize the truth of – and
perhaps with a tiny sinking
feeling as you realize that maybe,
you should get out of your
comfort zone a little more.
The implicit message of that
diagram is that “magic” requires
change. It is something I believe
very strongly, and I’m inspired by
the words of Walt Disney (who
knew more than most about
magic): “If you can visualize it,
if you can dream it, there’s some
way to do it.”
I can’t think of a better message
for industrial enterprise leaders
in this era of change. We stand
with the makers, the doers, the
builders; the innovators. Our
most successful customers in
adopting industry 4.0 approaches
have taken the step of visualizing.
They have dreamed of what could
be done. By coupling this human
ingenuity and innovation with
the power of machines and
Rockwell Automation solutions –
we always find a way to do it.
That’s where the magic of
Industry 4.0 happens. Take a look
just outside your comfort zone,
the benefits are close at hand, but
industry leaders must embrace
change to find them.
If you can visualize a bright
future for your enterprise, come
and talk to us, and we’ll help you
connect the imagination and
ingenuity of your people with the
intelligence of machines to make
it happen.
About Rockwell Automation
KONE wins order to equip second phase of
Finland’s West Metro extension
KONE, a global leader in the elevator and escalator
industry, has won an order to supply elevators and
escalators for the second phase of one of Finland’s
biggest infrastructure projects, the West Metro
extension in the Helsinki metropolitan area. KONE
also delivered solutions for the first phase of the
project, where the metro line was extended
westward from Helsinki into the neighboring city
of Espoo. The second phase will add a further seven
kilometers of metro line and five new underground
stations on the Espoo side of the line.
KONE will deliver 27 KONE MonoSpace®
elevators, four new-generation KONE inclined
elevators, and 42 KONE TransitMaster(TM) 140
escalators to West Metro. All the equipment has
been designed for heavy public transport use, and
the elevators can also be used in case of fire.
“Many of the technical requirements of the West
Metro are not visible to passengers. The elevators
and escalators are visible, and they are an important
part of the metro journey, the customer experience
and accessibility at the stations,” says Länsimetro
Oy Chief Executive Officer Ville Saksi.
Länsimetro Oy is the main developer of the project.
The West Metro will also use the cloud-based
KONE 24/7 Connected Services maintenance
solution. Utilizing the IBM Watson built on IBM
Cloud platform and other advanced technologies,
it monitors, analyzes and displays in real time vast
amounts of data gathered by sensors connected to
elevators and escalators. This means less equipment
downtime, fewer faults, and the availability of
detailed information on maintenance work.
“Thanks to our newest solutions, we can offer
increasingly better value to the West Metro and
increasingly smoother people flow for the people
using the metro. We are pleased to be able to use
the know-how gained through our extensive
experience of major infrastructure projects around
the world at the new West Metro stations,” says
Thomas Hinnerskov, executive vice president,
KONE Central and North Europe.
The installation of elevators and escalators is
scheduled to begin at the end of 2019. The second
phase of the new metro line is expected to be
completed during 2023.
Rockwell Automation Expands
Its Threat Detection Services
Globally
Cybersecurity services powered by Claroty protect
supply chains from unknown threats and provide
operational benefits
Masud, manager security services
portfolio, Rockwell Automation.
“Our Threat Detection
Services combine our innate
understanding of industrial
automation with Claroty’s
trusted OT network visibility.
The services can give companies
peace of mind by protecting not
only one facility but their entire
supply chain from unpredictable
threats.”
More than half of
all respondents to
an LNS Research
survey said their
industrial facility has
experienced a cybersecurity
breach. To help prevent such
incidents and combat the
unpredictable threats that cause
them, industrial companies
around the world can now
manage cyber risk in their
operations using the Rockwell
Automation Threat Detection
Services powered by the Claroty
threat detection platform.
Rockwell Automation recently
expanded the services globally
to help more companies combat
the unknown nature of today’s
rapidly evolving industrial
cybersecurity threats.
“A scary aspect of security threats
is what you don’t know about
them – what techniques they’ll
use, what attack vector they’ll
leverage, what vulnerabilities
they’ll exploit,” said Umair
The Threat Detection Services
help safeguard connected
operations in three key ways:
• Identify and Protect:
Identifying all industrial
control networked assets, and
their vulnerabilities, to help
companies know what to protect
• Detect: Monitoring networks
for not only known threats but,
more importantly, anomalous
traffic or behaviors to alert
companies of a security incident
– possibly before it even happens
• Response and Recovery:
Developing plans for containing,
eradicating and recovering from
attacks to keep operations
running or more quickly return
to a fully operational state
Companies that have used the
Threat Detection Services have
also discovered operational
benefits. For example, collected
asset data can help uncover risks
like obsolete technology,
outdated firmware and spare
parts shortages.
The Claroty threat detection
platform creates an inventory of
74

a user’s industrial network assets,
monitors traffic between them
and analyzes communications
at their deepest level. Detected
anomalies are reported to plant
and security personnel with
actionable insights.
“The Claroty platform, used
within the Threat Detection
Services, can accelerate a
company’s journey to more
connected and digitally driven
operations,” said Amir
Zilberstein, co-founder and CEO,
Claroty. “Most critically, the
platform can help companies
detect and quickly respond to
threats that bypass their security
controls. But it can also give
companies a deeper
understanding of their industrial
assets and improve their ability
to keep operations running.”
The Most Innovative and
Applicable Projects for the
Recovery and Reuse of
Water Resources
the other hand, is borne out
by an important event held in
September precisely in Italy:
The 3rd edition of the
Resource Recovery
Conference (www.iwarr2019.
org) of the IWA (International
Water Association), of which
IEG expo was a partner: it is
the major international summit
on this matter, which brings
together hundreds of world
experts intending to implement
projects of circular economy in
the water sector.
Today, the circular
economy applied to the
integrated water sector
- only calculating the
resource’s reuse in agriculture
– is able to provide a turnover
of 777 million euros and
approximately 4000 jobs in
Italy (“Circular Economy in
Italy”, Duccio Bianchi, Edizioni
Ambiente publishers). But
its potential is much greater:
there again, the 2017 edition
of the United Nations’ World
Water Development Report
has an eloquent title:
“Wastewater: the untapped
resource”.
The topic of the management
and sustainable exploitation
of wastewater, at urban and
industrial level, has a high
profile at Ecomondo
(5-8 November, Rimini Expo
Centre, Italy), the Italian
Exhibition Group’s platform
for the circular and green
economy in Italy and Europe.
With the Global Water Expo
section, and thanks to the
partnership with Utilitalia,
Ecomondo provides a
showcase for the innovation
every stage of the integrated
water service and wastewater
cycle. The central role of
Ecomondo in this context, on
At Ecomondo, the expo
section of Global Water Expo
is constantly growing (two
halls - D1 and D2 - are
reserved for it at the 2019
edition), while a panel of very
high profile scientific meetings,
prepared by Professor
Francesco Fatone
(Marches Polytechnic
University), responsible for the
“water” area on the Ecomondo
Technical-Scientific
Committee, will ensure
opportunities for in-depth
networking on all the major
topics connected with the
water sector: from the
combination of water and
agriculture, to that of water
and health, from the integrated
management of wastewater
and urban waste in cities
(water and the city), to issues
of governance and
regulations. A focus will also
be dedicated to digital
solutions (water 4.0), with a
view to improving efficiency,
planning and management for
better economic and
environmental sustainability.
HORIZON 2020 EUROPEAN
INNOVATION ACTION
At this edition of Global
Water Expo it will be again be
possible to obtain close-up
knowledge of the evolution
of the innovation projects in
the water sector co-financed
by the European Commission
through the Horizon 2020
action. As well as the
conclusive results of the
Smart Plant project which, in
large-scale pilot plants, has
validated for over two years,
the possibilities of the recovery
and reuse of cellulose,
biopolymers and nutrients from
wastewater and purification
sludge, Ecomondo 2019 will
enable attendees to know the
characteristics and steps of
the innovative Hydrousa
project, which has the
objective of responding to the
problems of water shortage,
typical of the Mediterranean
islands in the summer tourist
period, by means of
innovative nature-based
solutions: recovery of
wastewater, collection of
rainwater, low-cost
desalination of seawater, replenishing
ground-water
water and collecting air
humidity. Innovative solutions
that will be tested on three
Greek islands (Lesvos,
Mykonos and Tinos), while
other areas of the
Mediterranean (including
the Tuscan archipelago) will be
involved for the repeatability of
the concept. New solutions for
the reuse of purified
wastewater in the
Mediterranean basin are also
at the centre of the European
project Fit4rReuse.
All innovative projects that
combine research and
applicability, and which in the
context of Ecomondo will be
covered in depth on
Tuesday 5th November
during the meeting entitled
Water reuse in agriculture,
sustainable irrigation and
nature managed water cycle
in the new European
framework.
The European project
Digital Water City (DWC) aims
at finding digital solutions for
the optimization of urban water
services and will be presented
at Ecomondo on Thursday 7th
November in the context of
the conference on Water and
sanitation safety plans,
organized in collaboration with
the Superior Health Institute
and Utilitalia. Professor Fatone
explains, ”Digital technology
can be of great use for efficient
management of services
and water resources, but also
for properly planning
investments and contributing
to safeguarding the
population’s health by means
of smart systems and early
warning experts.” The Digital
Water City project involves five
European cities: Paris, Berlin,
Copenhagen, Sofia and, for
Italy, Milan.
On the other hand, the issue of
legislation on matters of
sustainable sludge
management and valorization
in wastewater treatment is the
topic of the meeting being
held on Thursday 7th
November entitled Barriers
and solutions for sustainable
sludge management and
valorization in wastewater
treatment.
FEATURE STORY
Project Engineers Win Construction
Contracts Putting These Skills to Test
Becoming a project
engineer goes hand in
hand with being a good
project manager.
Engineers help build structures
through accurate technical
reading. Project managers
facilitate the design-buildoperation
process by managing
people.
What makes the two so distinct
yet very similar? Their purpose—
which is to put their individual
strengths toward project
completion. Managing the technical
and people side of the
business isn’t a skill honed
overnight; a project engineer
jumps through many hoops to
assimilate a strong culture of
caring into tight bottom lines.
Project management in
engineering is a growing
discipline where engineers apply
project management techniques
to better manage their role on
site.
Responsible for product
design, engineers prepare
detailed sketched and engineering
reports after reviewing
drawings built by architects to
ensure compliance with code and
client specifications. Enormous
technical detail and support
go into materializing the final
design, which creates an equally
big room for errors if consistency
and accuracy are affected.
The bid-to-win ratio of
construction contracts has
diminished over the past two
decades, where in the prefinancial
crisis era more
projects would be up for auction
to a select few contractors in lo-
82

cal areas. Today, the sheer growth
in construction activity has also
generated a parallel growth in
the number of contractors,
except now those that are
digitally inclined bring more
business due to the cost and time
Project Management
for Engineers
How Construction Project
Engineers Communicate
PEs work with multiple teams for
months until the end of a
project. Communication about
daily project events helps them
collaborate even under
pressure—something that young
PEs easily give in to before
weighing their options to get to
an agreeable solution.
Construction projects are volatile
and that brings ambiguity even
to the most thoroughly-planned
project items. The
superintendent and PE are in
close quarters which can lead to
as much efficiency as anxiety for
PEs to prove themselves on the
job. When things don’t go
according to plan, PEs can take
on more than is reasonably
manageable without raising
queries, since they may view
themselves as seeming
incompetent if they raised
difficult questions.
This can deter effective teamwork
as the focus drifts away from the
task on hand to pandering to the
perceived interests of the project
stakeholders. Hence, it’s always
advisable to raise issues when
they arise to ensure that everyone
involved has enough bandwidth
to arrive at a fair solution.
Stabilized communication
increases your chance to convey
what’s deliverable to a client,
resulting in greater accuracy in
bid proposals which in turn is
likely to improve your winning
odds.
How Project Engineers Build
Relationships
Project engineers, as already
seen, collaborate with a variety of
stakeholders. From clients to
subcontractor teams, they’re
deeply involved throughout the
project lifecycle, which requires
them to nurture relationships to
achieve desired outcomes.
Strong internal relationships
determine their success at
bidding events since a full and
fair estimation of projects
enables them to promise only
what’s achievable—not what they
think the client would want in an
effort to outdo their competitors.
Setting yourself apart from the
competitors is a multi-faceted
process, one that needs clarifying
what type of work you can do
and at a price that beats direct
rivals.
If you’re on strong terms with
your customers, you can glean
valuable insights from their past
engagements with contractors to
prepare and price your projects
accordingly. Many times, bidding
at the lowest price isn’t feasible
while coming in at a higher price
point isn’t entirely risky since
you must be on the same page
with the client about the value
your resources and expertise will
deliver.
Avoid speculating on what your
client wants. Instead, actively
work with them to form a
proposal that appears to hit their
targets. For instance, you can
include a list of past projects
showing how you surpassed the
schedule and result expectations
through pictures of similar projects.
Draft a phased schedule of
delivery to help your client think
about how you intend to
complete the project. Aim to
include appealing added services
to your proposal that prove you
can reach your completion date
with no pending work and all
obligations met.
Onboard a Construction
Estimating Software
Using software is yet to become a
universal SOP; however, a
construction estimating tool is
effective to centralize bid
information and define
workflows to control costs
and schedule.
Should your company find value
in a digital solution, here’s a
comprehensive guide on
construction project manage-
86

ment software to move to the
next level.
Construction bidding software
is widely integrated into project
management software to cover a
variety of activities across
project phases. It automates
costing jobs and comes with a
range of integrations and product
support that smoothens tasks
from creating drawings to billing
clients.
Being a smart data management
tool, it regularly notifies users of
price fluctuations in the market,
labour costs, material supplies,
and offers a plethora of bidding
resources that come in handy
wherever you are in the
construction bidding process.
The database adapts to the
method you use to cost jobs
while updating with the
incoming market and industry
trends.
This minimizes errors and risks
and gives contractors, engineers,
owners, and clients the confidence
to visualize the project to
completion.
Lean Construction for
Higher Bid Wins
The most viable approach to
greater bid wins is to have the
lowest possible costs and the
most efficient field project
management process. Field
teams must adopt lean and
productive approaches to
executing on project design
requirements with zero
downtime, lags, quality slip-ups,
and errors. With everyone
managed according to lean
construction parameters, your
jobsite will function as was laid
out during the planning phase.
Here are some tactics to help you
imbibe lean construction project
management:
• Present a realistic proposal
• Onboard digital solutions and
show their application
• Offer specialized services
• Offer a complete package of
trained staff and value-added
engineering services
• Provide proof of being
well-financed alongside permits
and liability coverage
• Give a walkthrough of a
schedule to show faster project
completion
• Develop a partnership and
promise to do whatever it
takes to account for what
you’ve proposed
FEATURE STORY
How Engineering Can Keep
In-Person Casinos Alive
The world we live in today is one that’s moving constantly toward
new innovations and greater tech dependency. We’ve seen the rise of
services that allow you to place orders for meals and groceries,
experienced ride sharing’s transition from horror story to everyday
utility, and watched as streaming services took over television. It’s not
the first thing we think about as we consider these changes, but in all
of these instances physical venues and product stand to suffer as a
result of innovation. And when we think of things this way, another
industry comes to mind as one that’s approaching a crossroads of
sorts in its ongoing digital revolution. Internet-based casinos have
become so sophisticated, and so widely available, that it’s become fair
to wonder if in-person alternatives can continue to survive.
That’s an open question, but thinking of it from a creative engineering
standpoint, there’s more than a glimmer of hope for these traditional
commercial venues.
The Expansion of Online Casinos
Online casinos are nothing new, but they do seem to have grown
both in number and audience as of late. And while this seems in an
overarching way to be a sort of natural evolution resulting from better
software on gaming platforms (in some cases it really is that simple),
there would appear to be a few more specific explanations for what
we might call the second rise of online gambling.
For one thing, the best games on the internet are easier to find than
ever before. Fifteen or 20 years ago, finding the best online gambling
opportunity meant testing out different poker sites - essentially to
find the one that was least annoying. Now, it’s as simple as going to
one of a handful of trusted, aggregator platforms hosting wellreviewed
games from top genre developers. Furthermore, these same
platforms and games can now be accessed easily via mobile, putting
the best online casino games in history right in people’s pockets.
There’s also the legal side of things to consider, and this is actually
where we’re seeing the most evidence that the surge in online casino
popularity could continue in the coming years. Specifically, new
online casinos in the U.S. are beginning to expose the American
market to the industry. It’s going to take state-by-state legislating to
make the games legal to play with real money, but the first steps have
been taken, and tens of millions of U.S. gamers could add significant
revenue and attention to the market.
It’s these developments that seem to be at least opening the door for
physical, in-person casinos to see a decline in popularity. But as
alluded to above, this is where creative designers and engineers can
come into play.
How Casinos Can Survive
Casinos have long attracted crowds of people all over the planet, for
a number of different reasons: bright, exciting visuals, a positively
charged atmosphere on location, and of course, the dream of earning
boatloads of cash. But with online gambling opportunities
improving so rapidly, some of those attractions are becoming
decidedly less special. Exciting visuals? These are easily replicated by
modern casino gaming graphics, if not improved upon. The chance to
risk and win real money? This is, if anything, more convenient
online, and with more options at hand. This doesn’t mean people
won’t continue to enjoy in-person casino floors, but it does mean
casinos that want to continue thriving may have to emphasize other
aspects of their appeal. And the things not even the best of the best
online platforms can compete with are atmosphere and physical
impact.
To some extent we’re already seeing casinos acting on this. There does
appear to be more emphasis being placed on live attractions, from
shows to restaurants run by celebrity chefs. And some of the newer
casinos in places like Las Vegas are clearly built with beauty and
luxury as the first priorities, and gaming merely a feature. These
trends, subtle though they may be, are likely to continue, and the
thinking here is that they can be enhanced significantly by bold and
exciting engineering projects.
To explain this idea, look back at a previous post you may have seen
here regarding Dubai’s push to attract more tourists. The famously
94

innovative city is constructing the world’s largest ferris wheel,
adding yet another engineering marvel to an impressive list that’s
been amassed over a relatively short time period. Now think about
this in the context of attractions like The Venetian Macau’s artificial
canal network, or the miniature New York City at the New York, New
York in Las Vegas, or even the sky-scraping infinity pool at the
Marina Bay Sands in Singapore. All of these are effectively
engineering and design achievements that have come to define
casinos already, and in some cases entire towns!
This, given all of the digital takeover potential described above, is
what casino owners and operators will need to be thinking about in
the next five, 10, or 15 years. Just another casino resort - even a
beautiful and luxurious one with a massive gaming floor - is
unlikely to offer much specifics appeal to the modern gamer who’s
used to digital convenience and sees nothing special in an in-person
slot machine or poker table. However, what if a new Vegas
establishment hired an engineering team to beat out Dubai’s new
ferris wheel? What if a major European city challenged the highest
skyscraper in its country with a new casino resort? What if a country
built an artificial island incorporating ferry service to a faux-tropical
casino venue? These features and attractions can still make an impact
that online gaming can’t match.
It’s for this reason that we might expect a significant push toward
innovative and daring engineering in this particular space.
