Book club
Love. Laughs. And a little drama!
Book club
Every year, Sarah writes a love-filled
birthday letter to Izzy, her now sevenyear-old
daughter. And when she falls
pregnant with her second child, she
promises Izzy that when the new baby
arrives, life will not change, only get
better. But then, when five months
pregnant, Sarah collapses and her
future, and that of her pregnancy, is in
the hands of her husband and sister,
who don’t agree about what treatment
options the doctors offer, and the
family fights begin. Sinead Moriarty’s
tales are always heart-warming (and
sometimes heartbreaking) ... Seven
Letters is both – and thoughtprovoking,
too. Penguin, R290
Also look out for...
When Lucy’s affair with her married
boss turns sour and she’s retrenched,
she moves to a quiet village where
no-one knows her history. She’s the
incomer, as the locals call newbies,
until another arrives. Alice, also young
and single, moves into the house next
door. She’s a little strange and Lucy
doesn’t trust, or even like, her much.
Even less so when Alice suggests
starting a book club – her way of
getting in with Lucy’s friends. And
Lucy’s right not to trust her. Alice has
moved into the village for just one
reason. Revenge! Once you’ve started
CJ Cooper’s The Book Club, you won’t
put it down! Little Brown, R325
Good friends. True love. And all the signs of the zodiac. Those of you who enjoy
David Nicholls, Marian Keyes and Jojo Moyes are going to love Minnie Darke and
her brilliant, feel-good romantic comedy. In Star Crossed, Justine Carmichael
(Sagittarius, aspiring journo and sceptic), bumps into her teenage crush Nick
Jordan (Aquarius, struggling actor and true believer) by chance. Or is it? Could it be
written in the stars? She discovers Nick relies on the astrology column published
in the magazine where she works, and makes a few adjustments to the Aquarius
horoscope, thinking it may help her love life. After all, it’s just the stars. What could
possibly go wrong? Funny, romantic ... chick-lit at its best. Penguin, R290
When new mother of twins Lauren is
woken in the middle of the night, she
hears unusual noises from the bed
alongside hers in the maternity ward.
In that half-awake, half-asleep state
new mums find themselves in, she
thinks there’s a new arrival in the ward
... another mother, apparently also with
a set of twins. In and out of sleep she’s
not sure what’s a dream and what’s
not but she’s convinced someone is
trying to steal her children, and she
locks herself and her babies in the
bathroom until the police arrive. The
next morning, DS Joanna Harper picks
up the list of overnight incidents that
have been reported, and sees one is
of an attempted abduction – but it’s
been flagged as a false alarm. She’s
told there’s no case, but Harper feels
something’s not right, so visits the
hospital anyway. She discovers no-one
believes Lauren ... but Lauren, and
soon Harper, are convinced the twins
are in real danger. Little Darlings
by Melanie Golding is a haunting,
unputdownable read. Scary stuff!
It’s a comma
Nikki has a
selection of
high-impact talks for
women’s month. For
all the details, go
to Get It Joburg
North Magazine
Facebook page
Nikki Bush shares her tale of
taking responsibility for her
new future
Nikki Bush’s recent induction into the
Speakers Hall of Fame by The Professional
Speakers’ Association of Southern Africa is
proof that life continues after tragedy.
‘A broken picture is a weird thing – in just
18 months, I’ve gone from living with my
family of four in a home we owned, with
a half-acre garden, to a rental with a tiny
patch of grass,’ muses Nikki Bush, speaker,
author, media personality and parenting
expert. She is, of course, referring to the
tragic events of 2017, when her husband,
Simon, was murdered by intruders. Her
youngest son, Matthew, is currently away
studying at university, while her eldest,
Ryan, has just left for a stint overseas,
leaving her as a party of one.
Nikki candidly admits, ‘While there’s an
enormous amount of PTSD, if you look
hard enough you can find collateral
beauty among the collateral damage. If
you allow yourself to become mired in
the damage, your life reaches a full stop.’
Nikki, on the other hand, has turned that
full stop into a comma, a pause in her life.
She has, in her own words, ‘refused to let
my narrative become one of tragedy’. A
wise decision.
Long before there was Nikki Bush, high
profile widow, there was Nikki Bush,
the speaker who had cornered a tricky
market by empowering and teaching
parents how to build resilience and
prepare their children for a fast-changing
future that’s hard to imagine.
Nikki says the veracity of her teachings
has been put to the test through an
experience she calls ‘a life quake’.
‘I’ve always said parents need to give
their children scenario plans for ‘what if’
moments, should they happen in the
real world or online,’ she says. Nikki ran
one of these blueprints, and it literally
saved her life.
16 Get It Joburg Northern Suburbs July 2019

not a full stop
By walking with grief and trauma, she’s
come to the realisation that hers is
a life that has been disrupted – but,
as she observes with her trademark
pragmatism, disruption is part of the
human condition. ‘We all experience
loss on some level, whether it’s the
loss of a loved one, your home, your
health or wealth. The key lies in looking
for growth and rebirth and taking
responsibility for your new future.’
Of course, that isn’t always easy. Nikki
recalls ’hitting a wall’ the night of
Simon’s funeral, when she realised
she had absolutely no idea of what
tomorrow would look like. For a gogetter
who eschews uncertainty of any
kind, this was simply terrifying. That’s
when a friend gave her the advice that
If you look hard
enough you can
find collateral
beauty among the
collateral damage.
would change her life: ‘You need to
reframe this as a pause in your life, a
comma followed by dots, and these
symbolise the future you’re going
to consciously create and build for
yourself. ‘ She grabbed this insight
and made it her own, and it’s this
that made sure her challenge didn’t
bury her, but planted her like a seed.
She’s embracing the adventure of the
unknown, of creating a new normal.
The loss of her husband and her
home (they moved out after a second
attempt on their property) was
compounded by having to deal with
the inefficient bureaucracy that makes
wrapping up a life – all the practical
matters, like the papers, policies and
money – a customer service nightmare.
‘Empathetic, humane customer service
is in short supply, and there’s no script
for dealing with death among most
financial or legal advisors and service
providers, despite what they advertise,’
she says. ‘It’s incredibly difficult to keep
your temper when you’re grief-stricken
and traumatised, and talking to a call
centre agent who insists on speaking
to the policy holder, when you have
seconds ago explained that the policy
holder is dead,’ Women, in particular,
are less prepared than men to deal
with a ‘what If’ scenario, should it strike,
she maintains.
Nonetheless, she reiterates, the
understanding that life continues is
vital – as her life has done. ’Gradually
you pick up your scattered, shattered
pieces, and even though you’re
changed forever, your energy and
focus returns.’ Nikki was overwhelmed
by the support she received – from the
corporate that changed the date of a
national product launch so she would
be able to speak at the event, to the
stranger who walked up to her in the
bank and wrapped her in a wordless
embrace – and determined she would
live up to their perception of her. She
has written furiously, updating her
best-selling Future-Proof Your Child
(due out in August 2019); created
a new series of talks based on the
insights forged through her grieving
and rebuilding process, and has made
history as the first woman inducted
into the Southern African Speakers
Hall of Fame, shattering the glass
ceiling in this industry. ‘When your life
has been disrupted, you can choose
to be broken and buried, or broken
open and grow. You have to force
yourself to flip-flop out of the dark
into collateral beauty and possibility,
and be open to what happens next.
Grief is not linear, and each person’s
process is unique but people, places
and experiences reflect the new
you like a mirror, and there can be
profound self-discovery and growth in
this,’ she concludes. Details: nikkibush.
com or info@nikkibush.com
What if ...
Nikki shares her tips for handling
a ‘what if’ moment.
• Always have a Plan B. Nikki
saved her own life by following a
plan she developed in case her
house was burgled.
• Keep a ‘what if’ file filled with
up-to-date copies of everything
from policy numbers and
passwords to unabridged
marriage and birth certificates.
• Stand up for yourself from
the beginning. Wrapping up
an estate is very difficult and
service providers will give you
a hard time. Stay firm from the
start.
• Tell people talking to you to
slow down, especially legal and
financial advisors who speak in
jargon or legalese.
• When wrapping up an estate,
ask a trusted friend or family
member to accompany you to
every meeting, because your
memory may be impaired.
• Accept support. You cannot
walk the journey of loss alone,
but also follow your gut.
• Don’t let other people lay their
own ‘stuff’ on you.
• You have to ‘do grief’, not just
read books about it. Understand
that grieving is an active
process. For Nikki, that meant
crying, talking, sleeping, walking,
swimming, journalling, praying,
meditating, reflecting, birthing,
changing, absorbing, accepting,
healing and growing.
• Don’t underestimate the power
of rituals such as coffins, burials,
cremation and eulogies – they
help you accept death. Nikki
says her memory of walking
behind her husband’s coffin at
the funeral was an anchor to the
reality of a loss that for a year
seemed almost surreal.
A NOT-SO-TYPICAL
COMEDIAN
Ndumiso Lindi – or Roosta, as his
friends call him – is not a South
African household name … yet!
That’s soon to change, as this
comedian, corporate MC, voiceover
artist and presenter is set to
blaze across a stage near you in
his upcoming stand-up comedy
show, Boys Don’t Cry in July,
which hits the Auto and General
Theatre on the Square in Sandton.
Starting on Tuesday, July 23, Lindi
is hosting a five-day run for us to
enjoy his fresh comedy, baritone
voice and flawless delivery.
The oddly named show is largely
because Lindi has an aversion
to the typical. ‘I try to run away
from SOMETHING SOMETHING
COMEDY SHOW! when it comes to
naming things. I’m running away
from those obvious titles and
trying out these movie-style titles.’
While the title of the show may
be movie-style, the show has a
personal touch. ‘It’s a dedication
to my father, who died last year in
July,’ Lindi says.
‘I decided to do a show I’d
dedicate to him, his life and just
talk about everything. Dads always
say to their sons ‘boys don’t cry, be
strong’. When last July came, I fell
apart. Because stand-up comedy
for us is like therapy, we take our
pain and put it on stage and find
the funny bits in it. One comic
once said a comic goes on stage
and talks about funny things, but
a comedian goes on stage and
makes things funny.’ We know
Lindi will.
The ‘gentleman of
comedy’ tells us about
Boys Don’t Cry in July
... his new show on
stage at the Theatre
on the Square and
about his mastery of a
personal voice
The aptly named ‘gentleman
of the South African comedy
circuit’ can read a room like no
other. His intuition and streetsmart
nature help to keep his
finger on the pulse of the nation,
guaranteeing an appeal to every
audience member. His comedy
is self-described as ‘observational.
I always talk about what I’ve
experienced. I talk about my
family, I talk about what humans
do. I always talk about the music.
I’m a storyteller.’
If you’re planning to catch his
show, you can expect about an
hour of laughs. This comes with a
‘but’, as Lindi says, ‘If you’re really
having fun on stage, time doesn’t
really matter. You can open your
mouth to say hello and the next
thing you know 10 minutes are
gone.’ His comedic inspiration is
classic: ‘I’ll always look up to the
greats like Richard Pryor. I started
comedy, then bumped into his
DVD – it changed everything I
knew – how I delivered a joke on
stage, the way I build up a joke.
Another one is Dave Chapelle.
His subject matter, his delivery on
stage, just the way he is. Around
the world he’s considered the
king of comedy. Eddie Murphy, of
course.’
With so many comedians out
there, what sets Lindi apart
from the others is his mastery
of a personal voice. ‘I guess I’ve
always tried to stay away from
what other comedians are doing,
especially in a line-up show,’ he
says. ‘If comedians are talking
about current issues and I’m the
headliner, then I stay away from
those issues unless I come up
with a different angle, which is
something I always challenge
myself to do.’ His personal
touch doesn’t just extend to his
performances. ‘I studied graphic
design, so all my posters are my
own work. Creative director!’
With so much on the go, it’s
natural to question what comes
next. For Lindi, this year is about
collaborations and doing the
shows he’s been wanting to do
for a while. ‘We kicked off this year
with a show we started last year,
Married, But Not to Each Other,
with Tumi Morake’ – a queen of
South African comedy, according
to Lindi (we agree!).
‘Next up,’ he says, Keeping Up With
the Xhosas.’ He also has his sights
set abroad. ‘Comedy is my ticket

to the world. I love travelling and
it’s taken me to a lot of places
around the continent – Nigeria,
Kenya, Uganda, among them, and
overseas the UK, United States,
Switzerland. The more you start
performing around the world, the
more you like it. You feel you’re
making the world laugh.’
That said, South Africa is his love.
‘Local will always be lekker. It gives
you an advantage to perform in
your own language and you know
the right references to throw
in.’ South Africa has a gorgeous
comedy scene but so many of us
are out of touch with it because
our idea of family time or a date
night usually involves a restaurant,
perhaps with a movie afterwards.
Lindi wants to challenge that.
‘Laughing is good for the body.
People should go out and
support stand-up and get positive
vibes. Also you don’t have to tip
anybody.’ Good point!
When asked for any pearls of
wisdom for budding stand-up
comedians, Lindi says, ‘Don’t do
it for the fame or for the money.
Do it for the love. Be patient. Keep
writing and try to stay original.
Don’t be the next me or Trevor
Noah or whoever. Find your own
voice.’
To get a feel for Ndumiso Lindi’s
voice (and probably lose your
own voice from laughing so hard),
23 at the Theatre on the Square,
or take a look at his website.
Tiana Theron
story on how she
overcame her acne
condition with the
help of Kalahari. Visit
kalaharistyle.com
If you suffer from problematic skin, you know how
disheartening it can be to wait until adulthood to finally have
a clear complexion, only to discover that acne doesn’t necessarily
end when your teenage years do! Acne can be a life-long battle, and
occurs when a pore or hair follicle becomes clogged with natural
sebum (oil) and dead skin cells. When the bacteria that lives in the
skin, enters and infects the pore, it results in inflammation. There
are two types of acne; the inflammatory and non-inflammatory
kind. While inflammatory acne consists of painful papules, pustules
(pimples), nodules and cysts; non-inflammatory acne occurs in the
form of closed comedones (whiteheads) and open comedones
(blackheads). Problematic skin conditions can be the result of a
number of contributing factors including; genetics, hormones,
hygiene, incorrect use of skincare products, stripping of the skin’s
natural oil barrier, diet, stress, poor sleep patterns, medication, solar
exposure and smoking. Kalahari’s main aim when treating acne-prone
or problematic skin, is to restore the skin’s natural hydrolipid barrier as
well as reduce inflammation by targeting the bacterial infection.
heers
to drinks with a difference
Craft rum. Vodquila. Non-alcoholic drink options. There’s a
reason they’re popular and Mbali Zondo can tell us just why.
Text: Lisa Witepski. Photo: PETER WHITFIELD
Want to know if you’ll still be using
your gin infusion kit next summer,
or which red blend will make your
guests swoon? Mbali Zondo, group
marketing manager at Norman
Goodfellows, is the person to ask.
With a background in PR and event
organising, Mbali’s career has always
had a strong social element – and, of
course, where there are people, there’s
food and drink. In fact, socialising
is one of her great loves, along
with feeding people (although she
confesses she’s a baker rather than a
cook), so her position at one of South
Africa’s well-known liquor chains suits
her perfectly. ‘I love being exposed
to new brands and different types
of drinks,’ she enthuses – which is
why every Friday afternoon finds her
browsing the aisles of her store, trying
a new brand or figuring out what’s
driving sales of another.
Yes, she confirms – that’s just as much
fun as it sounds, but it’s useful, too.
‘From a professional perspective,
you can’t build a brand if you’ve
only experienced it on paper. I also
like the fact that I’m able to give my
friends personal recommendations.’
And what, exactly, would those
recommendations be? ‘If we’re talking
winter drinks, you can’t go wrong
with a red wine or red blend. But I
also recently tasted a whisky espresso
cocktail that’s perfect for chilly nights.’
If she’s choosing her own drinks,
Mbali opts for bubbles or gin. Valdo
Floral Prosecco gets her thumbs-up,
especially because she can never
resist a beautiful bottle. As she says, ‘A
drink must look as good as it tastes!’.
That’s also why she favours Catherine
Marshall’s reds and Chenin Blanc –
although, great art direction on the
wine labels aside, she’s an enthusiastic
supporter of women in the drinks
industry. It’s not surprising then, that
she also lists Ntsiki Biyela’s Aslina wines
among her favourites – after all, Biyela
was one of the first black women
winemakers in South Africa and Mbali
is especially passionate about the
advancement of women. When it
comes to gin, The Botanist is her pick,
garnished with blueberries, grapefruit
and cucumber to get the perfect
balance of floral and citrus notes.
About that gin … Mbali predicts
that the craft bottles on our shelves
may still have a place for some time,
but it won’t be long before they’re
joined by rum. This is one of the most
exciting spaces in the drinks industry,
she reports … a trend that’s pushed
by the proliferation of pop-up rum
restaurants, giving us a chance to
experience the spirit as never before.
Experimentation is all part of the
fun, but for those who wish to stay
away from the strong stuff, there’s
also a significant turn to low- or nonalcoholic
beers ... a great choice for
those who want to be able to enjoy a
good party and still get up early for a
cycle the next day.
Mbali notes that the interest in
alcohol-free beverages may also be
attributed to the growing concern
about ethical eating. ‘There’s an
increased demand for natural, organic
ingredients – and drinks trends always
follow food,’ she observes. This also
explains why we’re seeing more food
and wine pairings – and for those
who are still daunted by the notion of
finding the perfect Merlot to match
their meat, there’s usually a new food
festival or rooftop market where
someone in the know can share their
expertise.
Also, there’s the Instagram explosion
of people hoarding ice buckets of
pricey bubbles at these events – a
phenomenon which may baffle the
average South African, but which
Mbali explains is all down to the
need for social acceptance. ‘South
Africans love to splash and splurge on
30 Get It Joburg Northern Suburbs July 2019

expensive brands to show they can,’
she says. This is one of the peculiarities
of our market, which is amplified by
our diversity. On the plus side, that
diversity means there are literally
thousands of palates distillers and
winemakers can appeal to, and some
are doing so with surprising results.
Enter the vodquila (a mix of vodka
and tequila), along with flavoured
beers and gin cocktails.
Of course, says Mbali, for every person
who wants to play with flavours,
there’s a loyalist who wouldn’t
dream of ordering a different
brand of cognac. And while that’s
understandable, she wishes more
people would try South African
brands which, she believes, ‘don’t
get the shine they deserve’. It helps
to have more celebrities releasing
their own beverages: Think I Am
Khanyi – Khanyi Mbau’s gin or Bonang
Mathebe’s House of BNG MCC Brut
Rosé, because these brands have
undeniable sparkle, encouraging
more people to sample them. What’s
interesting though, is that these
famous folk have actually had a hand
in the creation of their drinks, rather
than simply endorsing them, which
makes the celebrity tipple space a
particularly interesting one to watch,
according to Mbali.
It’s all a sign that the industry is
changing, she continues – and it’s
something she’s proud of. With
brands like whisky label Glen Scotia
undertaking initiatives to boost
ethical consumption (it’s adopted
100 000 bees to preserve the species
and improve sustainability), there’s
a new standard in ‘drinks that make
a difference’. Mbali would like this
attitude extended to other areas of
the industry. Her personal bugbear
is the perception of people who
work in the industry as lushes who
do nothing but swill drinks all day.
It’s an image she hopes will change
as consumers are educated about
the good the alcohol industry can
achieve. And on the subject of things
that need to change, she’d like to see
greater participation by young black
women, along with clear-cut career
paths for them to follow.
We’ll drink to that! Details: @mbals on
RAISE A GLASS
Compiled by: DANIELLA POTTER and MEGAN BRETT
Testament to the saying ‘good things come in threes’, we’ve
found a trio of new – and really fab – cocktail spots ... and we’ve
thrown in two more treats for your shopping list – cheers!
Now here’s a great location for sundowners
Perched on top of Northcliff Hill one recent crisp Tuesday evening, the sight of
what seemed like a million twinkling lights took our breath away... Then we were
handed a glass of bubbly and we thought, wow, we’ve really hit the jackpot! We
highly recommend you too take the journey up this Joburg landmark and pay a
visit to the new, seriously classy, boutique hotel, The Northcliff, and try the Kranz
restaurant. It’s an exceptional spot for sundowners – from the grand windows in
the intimate restaurant, you’ll take in the view that stretches from our northern
suburbs right the way through to the Magaliesberg – wow! Opt to enjoy your
pre-dinner drinks (the wine list is very diverse and there are cocktails too) on the
pool deck – we did and it was magical. When you start to feel a little peckish,
you’ll be spoilt for choice by the three-course menu. Seafood fans, we can vouch
for the butter poached prawn with chimichurri, coconut rice ball and sweet
potato as a starter – yum! And our sweet tooth swooned at the delicious malva
pudding with tonka bean ice cream and a rooibos glaze – worth every straightto-the
hips calorie! Starters and desserts around R90, mains from R165.
Gin fans ... this one has
your name on it! The
Skip the hangover
If it looks like a cider, tastes like a
cider ... it’s still a cider – but without
the alcohol! Enter Savanna Non-
Alcoholic Lemon ... apparently SA’s
first non-alcoholic cider. We all know
there’s a rising trend of ‘conscious
consumption’ and this cider’s said
to have been designed in response
to it. For those who are mindful of
their consumption ... or looking for a
tasty something to sip during a night
out before that (unbearable) 5am
wake-up call for gym or long day at
the office, this zesty cider could be
it! R15, from Norman Goodfellows.
The place to get social
If there’s one thing for sure, Social Parkwood
lives up to its name! This recently opened spot
has already become a top hang-out venue ...
the place to mingle and meet new people. It’s
seriously vibrant ... oranges, blues and Africaninspired
murals set the tone of this trendy bar
scene. Afternoons effortlessly roll into evenings
– especially on Friday and Saturday nights when
the DJ plays soulful house, Afro and jazz. The
drinks menu is detailed ... seriously, you’ll be spoilt
for choice with the huge selection of cocktails,
gins, beers and wines. But the menu offers help
too – there’s a taste map so you can find just the
right drink to suit your palate (or mood). Our top
pick? The personalised G&Ts ... choose your fave
gin, add flavourants, tonic and top it off with
some garnish ... all of your own fancy (what fun!).
On the cocktail list ... we highly recommend the
Pornstar martini (pictured) served with fresh
passionfruit and a side tot of bubbly – fruity, silky
and oh-so-yum! The menu’s locally-themed and
has some really tasty easy-to-share options ... great
for a large group of mates. Trust us, the Tshisha
Nyama sharing platter is a must-try ... the truffled
Parmesan pap will have you licking the plate!
Open daily from noon. Details: socialshabeen.co.za
Toast a chic new bar
Classy. Elegant. And oh-so-stylish. The SkyBar
at The Houghton Hotel is definitely the spot
to clink glasses ... perfect for a celebration, but
just as good for a vibey Saturday night out. For
sundowners, opt to sit at the bar outside ... the
peaceful sounds of running water from the pool
features will make you feel as if you’ve escaped
the city for a while (bliss!). You may catch some
golfers taking a swing on the Houghton golf
course too. When it gets chilly during winter
nights, head indoors ... you can resume a barseated
position, but we highly recommend the
comfy lounge areas. There are a few spaces to
choose from ... some social, others slightly more
intimate. The decor is tasteful ... greys, whites,
wooden and a touch of blue, with stylish lighting.
And the drinks? Spoilt for choice! There’s an
impressive wine selection ... the Bordeaux- and
Rhone-style blends are fashionable choices.
Hugely popular are the on-tap beers, range of
whiskies and vast selection of gins that you can
garnish as you wish. Cocktails? Staff can whip up
an array of them ... think refreshing Long Island
ice teas and zesty margaritas (both pictured).
They can stir – or shake – up a martini (Bond
would be happy) ... and there’s even an espresso
martini that’s apparently so delicious it’s already a
favourite! In short ... your next night out is sorted
... you’re welcome! Details: thehoughtonhotel.com
Indoor or out ...
Lavender Avignon Early Blue is small and bushy with deep blue blooms and
the strong fragrance of English lavender. Keep flowering plants in a warm,
sheltered spot on the patio during winter and it will continue flowering into
spring. Use the edible flowers in cooking or baking, and to flavour sugar. Cut off
the dead blooms to encourage new flowers. In summer it can be planted out
into the garden or into outdoor containers. It’s suitable for our hot, dry summers,
being able to tolerate heat better than stoechas varieties.
eco-friendly
‘If the bee disappeared off the
As a critical part of our food cycle,
and contributing significantly
towards the sustainability of
our eco-system through simple
pollination, we really should be
doing all we can to save the bees.
yellow and red-velvet petals sparkle
like a firework display. Each bloom
is different, and the cooler days
Like the other novelty petunias, the
flowers are single, with compact, neat
growth that suits smaller gardens, and
spill out of containers and hanging
baskets. Plants can double-up as
in indoor flower arrangement for
a day or two before being planted
outdoors. They like full winter sun,
well-drained soil, regular watering and
fertilizer once a month to ensure an
Coastal escape
Plett ... still (and always will be) the perfect
destination for a mid-year coastal break
With its plush boutiques and
smart complexes, Plettenberg
Bay is hardly a sleepy seaside
village getaway. But in spite of
the dramatic development that’s
taken place in recent decades, the
town remains a shrine to nature’s
bounty. And there’s nowhere
better to enjoy the view than
at the Sky Villa Boutique Hotel,
part of the Cape Summer Villas
Collection.
‘Plettenberg Bay always has the
most wonderful sunrises,’ my
mother tells me, reminding me
of how we used to sit, hands
wrapped round steaming mugs of
coffee, watching a small red ball
slowly climbing the horizon. That
was back in the nineties, when
Plett was our family holiday spot.
And, although much has changed
since then, the grandeur of the
sunrise certainly hasn’t. That’s
what I’m thinking as I watch that
same red ball from my balcony, its
rays refracted into a golden splash
on the surface of the lagoon. Just
beyond this gilded spectacle, the
beach beckons…
It’s no wonder Plett’s legendary
scenery draws legions of
holidaymakers, local and
international alike. But the same
craggy beauty which makes it
a joy for the eyes also makes for
outstanding exploring. While it’s
tempting to sit and take in that
balcony view, I know there are
even greater splendours beyond
the hotel.
There’s the famed Robberg hike,
for instance – a favourite way for
locals to spend the weekend. The
walk takes you from rocky dunes
(watch out for the views of seals
at play) to wave-splattered beach.
Then there’s cruising down the
Keurbooms River, where shadow
plays on fynbos-festooned
mountains and amber-coloured
water laps at private beaches. If
ever there was a place that called
you to spread out your towel and
turn off your phone, this would be
it – but, then again, that would be
a wasted opportunity. The smooth,
calm waters also make this an ideal
spot for trying out your stand-up
paddling skills. But if that idea
doesn’t grab you, perhaps the
thought of cruising slowly down
the river, bubbles in hand, will.
Plett’s beaches are also a favourite
party spot for whales and
dolphins. We played tag with them
out on the ocean, and although
the dolphins proved somewhat
shy and elusive, nothing could
beat the exhilarating sensation of
streaming over azure blue waves.
Then there are the boutiques
and bakeries. Those
who love browsing
through interesting
stores will find time
flies as they meander
down Plett’s high
street, refuelling
occasionally with a
flat white and slice
of buttery cake.
As much as all these activities are
food for the soul, there’s just as
much fulfilment to be found at
the hotel itself. It’s as though every
angle and corner of Sky Villa has
been carefully designed to make
you stop and stare – inside the
hotel, a luxe palette of metallics
is offset by moody wallpapers
and floral fabrics. Clearly, this
establishment hasn’t been created
merely as a place to relax; it’s also
intended as a treat for the senses.
The hotel’s gardens are even more
pleasing. Flurries of fynbos make
for a smudgy pastel landscape,
while the vista rolls all the way
down to that sapphire
sea. You can’t blame a
girl for wanting to take
it all in – which is why I
spend much of my stay
at the heated pool by the
rooftop bar. The espresso
martini I’m sipping certainly
doesn’t hurt, either.
The panorama from the
restaurant is similarly
spectacular. That might be the
reason the hotel is fast gaining a
reputation as a favourite breakfast
destination, although it’s the
dinners that really get my mouth
watering. The menu draws on
Mediterranean influences, so
expect plenty of fresh, bold
flavours that pair perfectly with
your coastal location. My all-time
hero dish is Live By Chocolate, a
chocolate experience so densely
delicious it will take care of all
cravings for the next week – think
a duo of mousse, lashed with
butterscotch sauce and finished
off with a dollop of home-made
ice cream. Of course, life isn’t
just about dessert (would that
it could be). I also loved the
avocado and salmon tartare,
with a liberal drizzle of sesame
oil complementing the Asian
complexity of the dish, while the
pork belly received lavish praise
from my companions. A word
of advice – go hungry! Sky Villa’s
portions are generous, to say the
least, and you’ll definitely want to
do them justice.
After just one weekend here, I feel
cosseted and cocooned – and
more than ready to tackle life
below the clouds.
Spoil
July
Fine bedding for
winter cocooning
OUR JULY SPOIL
Fancy a new set of linen or a warm
knitted throw? We’re giving a reader a
R1000 Volpes voucher to spend on linen
of their choice. Simply visit Facebook
(Get It Joburg North Magazine), like our
VOLPES WIN post and you’ll be
in the draw. Comp ends July 23.
Good luck (and stay warm).
There’s nothing like the colder months to make your bed a cosy haven. Add loads of layers ... think throws
in faux fur or velvet, blankets in flannel or knit or (oh ... winter bliss) the ever-popular Sherpa. You can add
a quilt too ... no longer just for granny’s room, they’re making a huge comeback – and the reversible quilts
with coordinating prints are fab – ring the changes, depending on your mood. Slipping between crisp cotton
sheets is always wonderful, but if you really suffer from the cold, consider brushed cotton sheets – the fabric is
brushed to create a nap that traps in air to hold in the heat, making them wonderfully soft and warm. Volpes,
our local linen specialist, has an exceptional (and jolly well-priced) range ... well worth visiting before Jack
Frost arrives with a vengeance. Details: volpes.co.za
