News & Views
from the
Boardroom
Today we extend a warm Paycare Ground welcome to the players,
supporters and officials of Bewdley Town FC. This will be the first league
meeting of the two clubs in 6 years the last meeting was at The City
Ground on 5 March 2013 when Bewdley ran out 2-0 winners. Irrespective of
todayʼs result their players and officials will be most welcome to join us for
our award winning hospitality.
Planning is already well underway for the official opening of the floodlights
against a Walsall FC XI on Tuesday 5 November 2019. Season tickets are
not available for this game so we have printed tickets to commemorate the
game. It would be helpful if you intend to attend the game if you purchased
tickets from behind the bar as soon as you can. If you have family or friends
who wish to come to the game please encourage them to buy their ticket in
advance.
In the last few weeks we have also been forward planning with regards to
further ground improvements. We have put in planning permission for
security fencing and the erection of additional seating and standing
covered accommodation. Whilst we do not need these improvements at the
moment, they form part of our future plans to get the ground up to Step 4
standard.
Halloween tickets are now on sale and available from Garry and I would ask
you to put a note in your diaries of the club pantomime on Monday 2
December 2019.
With nine Premier Division games played I am delighted with the progress
we continue to make. Andy and his management team are working
tremendously hard as are the players. I know Andy continues to add quality
and depth to the squad but it is difficult when most teams in this Division
and indeed many teams in Division One and some in Division Two have a
playing budget. The majority of clubs rely on benefactors who can withdraw
their financial support at any time. We are one of a tiny handful of clubs
who do not pay their players, but the spirit and hard work of the
management team and players is second to none. Long may it continue.
Enjoy todayʼs game………………
First time in three seasons it has not been
possible to bring you a “View from the
that we have not been able to bring you the
views of the manager or his management
team to give you an insight into their views
Black Country Rangers 0
Darlaston Town (1874) 0
For the first time since being re-formed in 2014 Darlaston fought out
a goalless League draw against Black Country Rangers at York Road
Oldbury.
On a difficult playing surface an evenly balanced game was scrappy,
littered with free kicks and not helped by some over fussy refereeing.
The first chance of any note fell to Darlaston on 12 minutes. Lucas
Hough and debutant Scott Stevenson exchanged passes in midfield,
Hough's pinpoint pass found Leon Taylor free inside the penalty area
but the striker was thwarted from getting his shot off by Musa
Jawara's superb last ditch tackle.
Rangers keeper Shane Maydew made a comfortable save
11

from Liam Smith's
header following a
Stevenson corner and
Taylor was again
denied, this time Joe
Bell with a last-ditch
challenge. Rangers
started to get a foot
hold in the game with
prompting and probing
passes from player/
manager and former
Stourbridge midfielder
Shaun Geddes, but
Darlaston's defensive
partnership of Liam Smith and Connor Fellows were superb at the
heart of the visitors defence.
Jarad Daniels blazed a free kick over the bar for the home side before
the best chance of the half fell to Darlaston's Daniel Bolzon on 35
minutes. Some excellent approach work down the right wing saw
Luke Charlton, Sam Causton and Stevenson combine, Stevenson's
near post cross was met by Bolzon whose first time effort was
smothered by keeper Maydew diving at the feet of Bolzon.
Neither side
were creating
any chances of
note Chris
Bladen and
Emile Beckford
impressing with
their forward
runs for
Rangers but
with no end
product.
Darlaston had
slightly the
better of the
half their work
rate and energy
impressive.
The second half followed a similar pattern to the first with play
broken up by niggling fouls or stray passes and neither side hitting
the heights with the quality of play associated with both
teams.
12

Aarondeep Grewal
had Rangers best
chance when failing
to convert a backpost
header from
Daniels' 55th
minute corner.
Darlaston pushed
on with Scott
Glasby, Reis Nadat
and Sam Causton
all making runs
down both flanks
but some excellent
defensive play by
Rangers ensured keeper Maydew was rarely troubled.
Khurum Iqbal's 82nd minute free kick went high over the bar for the
home side with keeper Whittaker rarely troubled throughout the
second half.
Stevensons' speculative 35-yard shot brought a simple save from
Maydew before the best chance of the game fell to Taylor on the
stroke of full time. The striker broke clear of Joel Bell 25 yards out,
turned Iqbal on the edge of the box and with the goal at his mercy
his 15 yard shot ricocheted off the legs of keeper Maydew to deny
Darlaston all 3 points.
Overall a
draw was a
fair result
with both
teams failing
to come to
terms with
difficult
playing
conditions
with defences
on top,
limiting
chances to a
point were
both keepers
were rarely
forced into
action.
Darlaston Town (1874) 3
Bolzon 56, Taylor 66,71
Bilston Town 0
West Midlands League Premier Division rivalries were renewed for the
first time in 38 years as these two sleeping giants of Black Country
football entertained a bumper crowd at The Paycare Ground.
Following a goalless first half it was Darlaston who emerged
triumphant with a second half opener from Daniel Bolzon and a brace
from skipper Leon Taylor.
In glorious sunshine Darlaston were quickly out of the traps Leon
Taylor and Romano Graham both failing to convert early chances.
Bilston responded with the impressive Kevin Nickle bringing a
comfortable save from home keeper Liam Whittaker following some
neat play on the edge of the box.
The home side were in the ascendancy with Luke Charlton
14

and Lucas Hough both
majestic in midfield
breaking up play and
spraying the ball
around with amazing
consistency.
The busy and
energetic Daniel
Bolzon was guilty of
some erratic shooting
with 3 attempts in the
space of 5 minutes all
clearing the bar by
some distance. Some
superb last ditch defending by Shaun Morris and Bryn O'Neil thwarted
Taylor and Graham from clear shots on goal whilst Nickle and Yannick
Gomes both snatched at half chances shooting high over the bar.
As Darlaston pushed on in search of the opening goal Ryan Jones and
Sam Causton made several strong runs down both flanks causing the
visitors defence problems whilst Darlaston defenders Connor Fellows,
Liam Smith and Scott Glasby were all kept on their toes by Nickle and
former Darlaston striker Sam Melia both of whom were sharp and
incisive.
Further chances fell to Taylor, Graham, Jones and Hough but poor
finishing and superb defending kept the Bilston goal intact. Despite
all of their first half pressure Darlaston were relieved to go in at the
break level after Sam Melia hit the post for the visitors with a well
struck shot from inside the box on the stroke of half time.
The second half
continued in the
same fashion
with Darlaston
playing some
delightful
football keeping
the visitors
stretched at the
back, restricting
them to rare
attacks. As
pressure
mounted on the
visitors
goal. the
15

eakthrough eventually came on 56 minutes. Bolzon pounced on a
loose ball mid-way in the visitors half he glided past a defender, some
unselfish play by Taylor's diagonal run pulled Matty Barnett wide
allowing Bolzon to beat another defender and slide a superbly placed
shot beyond keeper Zach Stretton. The goal was greeted with huge
delight by the home fans and gave the home side confidence to push
on in an attempt to seal the game.
Leon Taylor was
superb
all
afternoon. a thorn
in the side of the
over worked
Bilston defence,
and he settled the
game with two
goals in the space
of 5 mins taking
his goal tally to 6
in 8 League
games. His first
came on 66
minutes. Ryan
Jones
and
16

Bolzon combined,
Bolzon hooked the
ball on for Taylor
who out muscled
Matty Barnett to slot
home from 10 yards.
Five minutes later
Taylor grabbed his
second of the game,
a superb defence
splitting pass from
Lucas Hough set up
Taylor to calmly take
the ball around the
keeper and tap
home from 2 yards.
Darlaston were playing some impressive football, substitute Jamie
Holder combining on several occasions with Sam Causton setting up
chances for TJ Davies and "Zico" Agyemang whilst Taylor and Davies
both missed several one on one chances with keeper Stretton who
stood firm to round off an impressive goalkeeping display. For the
visitors Melia, John Dodd and Kamal Perry all had half chances from
distance without troubling keeper Whittaker.
Both sides played their part in entertaining the large crowd and
despite the intensity of local derbies the game was played in a superb
spirit as both sets of players, management and supporters represented
their clubs
impeccably.
The seasons
“Beyond the
Dressing Room”
So, another week another home game which
follows last week's trip to see the lads play away at
York Road against Black Country Rangers. In the
most difficult conditions, the boys worked hard,
kept their shape well to earn a point. I am not going to be around for
today's game but there are a few things happening that I haven't
mentioned up to yet worth bringing to your attention.
Firstly, the club have been asked by our good friend Sharon Felton of
Darlaston All Active if we will help with a display for the town’s
Remembrance Parade. I have been busily asking those people who I know
can either knit, or crochet, so they can and can make us poppies to attach
to the display. If you or anyone you know can please get in touch with me.
It really is important to unite as a community every now and then and
show thanks for those who have worked hard for us in the past.
Touching on this I think I would like to let everyone know that tickets are
now on sale for a number of events Halloween, the Walsall FC Game when
the floodlights are officially turned on, along with one of the best award
winning tribute acts in the country when Cher arrives on Nov 16th. If you
do want any tickets you will have to be quick especially for the social
events, please speak to either Gaz or Lynne Hale.
I think this time of year anyone involved on the fundraising side of things
begin to slowly feel a little bit frantic and like there isn't a second to lose as
events come thick and fast in the run up to the festive season.
Yes, I did say festive season! It will soon be here! Personally, I love the
events at this time of year, but they sure do take a lot of work to arrange
and host.
I want to ask everyone to start to have a think about raffle prizes
especially when and if you are having a clear out at work or
home. If you have anything you think may be suitable please
20

ing it with you the next time you come to the ground leave it for either
myself or Lynne.
All of the youth and ladies teams season’s are well under way, most are
doing well. We received some outstanding news recently, last season’s
Darlaston U14’s Warriors were crowned joint Walsall Junior Football
League Division One Champions. The delay was caused by an outstanding
disciplinary issue held over from last season leaving champions elect
Tipton Youth in third place after points were not awarded for a fixture.
Congratulations must go to Jamie Taylor, his management team and the
lads for their amazing achievement and bring the club their first ever
youth trophy, yet another chapter in our history has now started.
So proud of how you have all come into the Darlaston family and made us
all grow and develop. Our club is a force to be reckoned with on and off
the pitch and you all are part of that bigger picture.
I think over the next few months we have a load of home games, so lots
of pieces to write, so I will have to think of running a competition or
something to keep you all entertained. For now I leave you with this plea
to get involved with the poppy appeal be that with your children/
grandchildren or by making rain proof poppies we can use in the club’s
donation for our community's event.
Just to keep you all busy I've given you a few anagrams to warm you up
for what's to come, to keep you entertained.
The following are all anagrams of former coaches of the England national
football team:
1) Craves Clement
2) Lay Frames
3) Oven Ride
4) Good Horns
5) Clams Already
6) Enters Bravely
7) Capable Folio
8) One Wrongdoer Answers are on the bottom of Page 31
So good Luck today lads in your game and I hope you all can get behind
the lads and sing, chant and support Andy and the lads in todays game.
A BRIEF
HISTORY
Bewdley Town Football Club, as it is now known, was
formed in 1978, following over 90 years competing under
various local names, one of which has been resurrected recently by the youth
section as Bewdley Comrades.
The club was formed with the merger of two local teams, Bewdley Old Boys
F.C and Woodcolliers FC, the latter who played on a Sunday and both
originally playing at Gardeners Meadow in Bewdley. The ground at Gardeners
Meadow was sold for re-development which meant the club had to seek a new
venue and moved temporarily to Kidderminster. A massive fundraising project
commenced, which enabled the club to purchase land and return to Bewdley,
to their home Ribbesford Meadows under the guidance of Robert Burns.
After playing in the Kidderminster and District Leagues, the main senior side
under the management of Craig Payton and Chairman Geoff Edwards, joined
in 1999, the West Midlands Regional League Division One South. Prior to this
Ribbesford Meadows had been an on going project, providing football
facilities for all ages including, youth football in the Stourport and District
League and Midlands Floodlit League, adult football in the Kidderminster and
District League, and can boast being one of the first clubs in Worcestershire in
1993 under FA Coach Chris Middleton to start a Mini Soccer Centre. This centre
is still is still in operation, and draws children of all abilities from the age of 4,
from all areas of the Wyre Forest region, under the expert tuition of FA Coach
Wayne Payton and co-ordinator Jo Payton, and their team of qualified
coaches.
In 2005, Bewdley Town finished runners up in Division One gaining promotion
to the West Midlands (Regional) League Premier Division, however in order for
them to comply with the ground grading requirements for this level, Bewdley
had to groundshare with near rivals Stourport Swifts. In 2006 permission the
club was granted to build stands and erect floodlights to comply with ground
requirements and returned to their home ground. On the pitch the
first team finished third in the league. Having headed the table for
24

much of the season, some may say the league was lost because of bad floods
during the season. This meant a huge fixture backlog at the end of the season
which took its toll on the players. Even if they had won the league however,
they would not have been promotion due to the on going development of the
ground and once again not meeting the required grading level for step 5.
In 2007-8 the ground had been given a higher rating allowing them to
compete in matches at a higher level and gain promotion if they finished in
any of the top places. Bewdley Town FC also made history in this season, when
they were allowed to enter the F.A. Vase for the first time, where they reached
the third round proper, losing to higher ranked opposition Coventry Sphinx.
The following season saw Bewdley make their appearance in the FA Cup,
although short lived, when they lost at home to Midland Alliance side
Alvechurch FC.
The last few seasons, have seen Bewdley Town, under the guidance of joint
managers Craig Payton and Brian Lacey, become one of the top sides in the
West Midlands Regional League. Their attractive style of football has made
them one of the hardest sides to beat, and one which has attracted supporters
from all over the country.
Work is on going at Ribbesford Meadows, as the committee and loyal band of
volunteers continue to develop the ground for higher levels of competition.
Their hard work and achievement, was recently recognised by an award from
“Groundtastic Magazine” for the best stand in the lower levels of non league
football and narrowly missed winning best ground in the same category, they
have recently attained the necessary grading to allow them to proceed up the
non league ladder.
The 2008/09 season saw Bewdley Town reach the final of the Worcestershire
Senior Urn, losing narrowly to Midland Football Alliance side Studley 3-2 at
Aggborough, although many thought they were unlucky to do so. However
two years later in the 2010/11 season, they gained their revenge beating
Studley 2-1 in front of a crowd of over 500.
The 2011-12 season saw Bewdley become a strong cup side, they again
reached the final of the Worcestershire Senior Urn, where they retained the
trophy, once again in front of a 500+ crowd beating Alvechurch FC from the
Midland Football Alliance, coming from a goal down to win 3-2. They also
nearly caused an upset in the FA Cup, where after progressing through to the
Second Qualifying round, they very nearly claimed the scalp of Evostik
Southern Premier League side Stourbridge, leading 1-0 with 13 minutes of the
game left, but eventually losing 2-1, their victors progressed through
to the second round proper.
25

In the 2011/12 season saw Bewdley Town enter a team in the new Under 21
league of the Midland Combination, the first season saw them finish a
creditable fourth place in a strong league with a number of academy sides.
Season 2012/13 also begins a new chapter, with a new Under 18’s and our
Under 14’s entering the Midland Junior Premier League, playing on Saturday
mornings, where, very much like the Under 21’s, the competition will be against
strong academy sides. The introduction of these teams bodes well for the
future of Bewdley Town FC, with a direct route now through from Youth to 1st
XI football and beyond, which the club has continued to pursue since the
introduction of the Mini Kickers.
Bewdley Town were awarded the Charter Standard Adult Status in April 2012
and together with their successful Youth Section, are striving towards
Community Club Status.
At the end of 2012/13 season, Bewdley added to the trophy cabinet by winning
both the Worcestershire Infirmary Charity Senior and Junior Cups with the first
team beating Malvern Town 4-3 and the Under 21 beating the same
opponents 2-1. May 2014 saw an era come to an end, when joint managers
Craig Payton and Brian Lacey decided to retire. The position of first team
manager was handed over to the vastly experienced Phil Mullen with former
Kidderminster Harriers striker Paul “Ocker” Davies as his number two.
The 2014-15 season was a struggle for the new look Town, as, not only did the
club have new managers, but also had a new team, with a number of the
“older heads” deciding to retire, leaving Phil no option but to look to youth.
Town finished the season in seventeenth position, well clear of relegation, but
the final game of the season saw them regain the Worcestershire Infirmary
Charity Senior Cup with a 1-0 win again at Malvern Town.
The 2016-17 season saw the reintroduction of a second team, having been
accepted by the West Midlands Regional League, they will compete in Division
Two. The team will be under the joint leadership of Wayne Payton and Russ
Godfrey giving a much-needed link from the youth section to adult football.
This season saw the club enter and win the Smedley Crooke Charity Cup with a
victory on penalties against Coton Green. The first team finished in a creditable
sixth position in the league having been as low as seventeenth at the
beginning of January, the Reserves in their first season finished fourteenth.
During the close season, the club also obtained an FA grant enabling them to
have major drainage work done to the main pitch, hopefully this will mean no
mid-season break due to waterlogging as has happened in previous years.
Around the League
Shifnal Town and today’s visitors continue to set an unbelievable pace
at the top of the Premier Division both recording their seventh
consecutive league victories to maintain their 100% records.
At the Acoustafoam Stadium Shifnal recorded a 5-1 win against
Worcester Raiders. Jay Holdcroft, Kyle Montague, Ben Perks, Rees
Wedderburn on target as well as an own goal, Sam Carey on target for
the visitors. Bewdley maintained the pressure on Shifnal also recording
a 5-1 home win against Cradley Town who fell to the foot of the table
with their seventh defeat in 8 games.
Wolves Casuals remain the only other unbeaten Premier Division team.
Cassies boss Dean Gill returned to his old stomping ground at
Wednesfield where Cassies ran out 2-1 winners. Karen Danilian and
Marvin Nisbett on target to give them a two goal half time lead before
Cassies conceded their first league goal of the season, Wednesfield
reducing the arrears with a second half penalty.
Third placed AFC Bridgnorth fell to an unexpected 2-1 home defeat in
the Shropshire derby against Wem Town. Goals from Callam Briscoe
and Dylan Hillier giving the visitors only their second win of the season
and taking them off the foot of the table.
Dudley Town made it 5 league and cup wins on the bounce with a 4-0
win at the Aspray Arena against pre-season promotion favourites
Littleton FC. Two goals from Hinesh Patel supplemented by goals from
Mitch Lawley and Lewis Taylor Boyce settled the game.
At Queen Street Bilston Town beat fellow strugglers Dudley Sports 3-0,
Justice Campbell (two) and Ryan Sappleton Williams on the scoresheet.
In the only other game Pershore Town travelled to Smethwick Rangers
emerging 3-1 winners. A 13 th minute goal from Jordan Hayward and
second half goals from Sam Clark and Nick Seabourne sealed the win.
In Division One shock of the day was at The Garden Walk where Gornal
Athletic ruined the 100% record of leaders Willenhall Town in a 3-0
victory after Willenhall missed a first half penalty.
Wellington Amateurs missed the chance to leapfrog Willenhall
27

and go top falling to a 4-0 home defeat at the hands of Old
Wulfrunians. Two goals from Nathan Scott in the opening 25 minutes
put the visitors in control. Nathan Lodge added another before the
break, substitute Chris Farnell completed the scoring to send Wulfs into
third spot.
On the 4g pitch at Team Dudley all goals came in the first half in their
2-1 defeat against Black Country rivals Tipton Town. Matthew Hogg
gave Tipton an 8 th minute lead before Jack Bailey equalised on 27
minutes. The teams were level for just 4 minutes, Conner Scott netting
the winner for Tipton on 31 minutes.
After a run of four league and cup wins Sikh Hunters were brought
down to earth with a 4-0 loss at Allscott who moved into fourth spot.
Tom Fallon, Joe Bullock, Tom Horton and Rune Corinaldi all finding the
net. In the only other Division One game Bromyard town edged home
by the odd goal in 7 against Gornal Colts.
There was just one game in Division Two where leaders Coven Athletic
missed the opportunity to extend the gap to 5 points over Ludlow
Town falling to a 4-3 away defeat at AFC Bentley. In the landlord v
tenant clash it was the landlord’s who came away with the points
courtesy of four goals from former Wolves striker Liam Hughes.
