Acknowledgement
I must acknowledge my soul guide for watching over me throughout my life’s work and the
two ladies who deemed to spend their lives with me. My first wife who throughout our short
life together and suffered the most debilitating illness through which she taught me how to
care. My second dear lady who from our very beginning together has exuded the most
beautiful nature, love and caring attitude that anyone could hope for.
My Soul’s Enlightenment
Introduction
Where to start? Always the problem one encounters in committing to paper one’s
thoughts. So, let me set the base. I was born into a very religious Church of Scotland
Presbyterian family although through time I have developed a totally non-religious state. Do
not get me wrong. I do have a belief, though it does not follow any prescribed or accepted
religion or faith. It is very personal. It is a belief which although I explain, I do not expound
to others. This has developed over the years as I journeyed down my road of enlightenment.
The very substance of these writings.
I hope that if you continue to read through this manuscript, that you may discover a
way in which to qualify your own enlightenment. Whether it be to enhance your specific
religious faith or not, because this is only a path. It does not express any preference to any
belief system. See me solely as an erector of signs down this road which may or may not lead
you to discover your own truth.
2
The Beginning
So, what do I mean by enlightenment? The dictionary definition gives it as, “The
action of enlightenment is to understand. It is the state of understanding”. It was a term
constructed around a period in the eighteenth century defining the Age of Reason throughout
Europe. It was said that, at that time, if you stood at a corner of St Giles Church on the Royal
Mile in Edinburgh, that within ten minutes more than fifty men of genius would pass you by.
I am that man standing at that corner and this manuscript depicts all that I have learned in order
to walk you down this road of my enlightenment, erecting signposts on the way to help you
pass by.
My first encounter with the gathering of knowledge came through my tutor at
Manchester University, the famous if somewhat extraordinary freethinker and member of the
Dead Sea Scrolls team, John Allegro. It was he who installed in me the art of questioning and
the beauty of cuneiform. The system of writing developed by the Sumerians, circa 3500-3000
BCE, and later developed by the Arkadians. Unfortunately, unless you go into teaching, there
is only one well paid job in translating cuneiform in the UK and that is in the Victoria and
Albert Museum. I am not sufficient enough even to contemplate such a post and teaching is
just not my forty. The development of Sumerian culture is an epic on its own, but in translating
some of the many thousands of scrolls of the library of Ashurbanipal, including the Epic of
Gilgamesh led me to believe that there was much more to life than position, wealth and power.
Through the need to earn a living and enjoy some of the pleasantries of life, I eventually
studied architecture and later structural engineering. This was my day job for the rest of my
life. Indeed, at this point in time, at the age of seventy-four, I am still designing and building
albeit for my family, but all the rest of my time is spent developing my enlightenment.
My middle name, Benjamin, might give you a clue as to my next sojourn. In Biblical
Hebrew Benjamin (Binyamin, literally means “the son of days”). So, to learn more enter the
Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the wonderful depictive world of the Hebrew Mysteries.
The knowledge that I gained the most from during this time originated from the writings
of Rabbi Yehuda Leib Ha-Levi Ashlag, also known as the Baal Ha-Sulam in reference to his
magnum opus. One of the men of genius who passed me by whilst standing on the corner.
Now it would be impossible, or indeed unwise, for me to recall Ashlag’s writings within this
dissertation. Not only would it probably be impossible to do, but it may only result in
influencing the reader in one particular direction. However, there is one construct which I will
interpret and lay before you as it is a sign on the path we are travelling.
The terminology that I use in this construct is not his but my translation selected for
easier understanding. Rabbi Ashlag saw most evolution as a triangle divided into four parts.
3
At the bottom part of the triangle we find the greatest quantity,
namely the inanimate. At this level we find all the hard matter of
the universe. At the vegetative level we find all the organic plant
matter. If we take a single plant, a single flower, it expresses a
higher evolution than the inanimate as it can make a determination
between what’s good for it and what’s bad for it, and it grows in
a very limited way, towards the sun and taking certain elements
from earth and so on. It’s a simple form of life. Above that we
find the animate. From the smallest insect to the largest animal
which can express individuality and seek out and choose between
good and bad for its wellbeing. All this on an individual basis. Above that we find the human
level. This level incorporates all of the levels below it. They are all incorporated in it. On
this level, we have something called “mind and heart”. These elements allow us to experience
not like an animal that only sees the present, but to be able to use our mind and our heart to
compensate for those that are not present before us. So, this level actually incorporates all the
previous levels and effect all levels below it. So, the inner life of the human level is really
what makes for the conditions of everything else in the universe.
Evolution, however, does not end there. Within all
levels there are additional levels. Indeed, a further four in each.
However, let us ignore for the present all but the human level
where we find the following additional evolutional levels. The
Producer, the Improver, the Controller and the Thinker.
The vast proportion of the population lies within the producer
level. All a producer seeks is to be the hunter gatherer. He
works to sustain his own and his direct family’s responsibilities to be able to provide those little
luxuries in order to make life bearable. Ultimately, reproduction to maintain the human
domination of our material world is the main purpose of this section of the human population.
Advancing onwards, some of those in the improver layer who became bored with just being
one of the herd discovered the fact that by employing others to carry out the mundane work,
they could devote their time to other pursuits for furtherment and leisure
The natural evolution of man does on occasion pop up those within the improver level
who again become bored with their lot and by development discover that with wealth comes
the opportunity of power. It is then an easy progression into the controller level.
Those within this group who through wealth and power seek to impose themselves as
the leaders of our communities, whether for good or bad. I am sure everyone can name many
of those for good or ill who have dominated our world throughout the ages. However, there
comes a time when power and wealth wears thin and again some within this group become
bored and seek something else and progress to the thinker level.
This level, the thinker level, is in itself a very complex area. Not only is there a natural
evolution from producer to thinker but some, a very few, elevate directly into the thinker level
from their conception. This evolutional jump will become more clearly understood as we
progress, especially as we examine the work of Dr. Michael Newton.
4
So, what do I mean by the thinker level? Well it is within this level that all theoretical
and philosophical expressions are discovered, experimented upon and expressed as theories
and in many occasions turned into workable and fully understandable answers. In the past you
can see people such as the religious prophets, brilliant engineers and designers and the highly
advanced scientists such as Aristotle, Archimedes, Galileo, Sir Isaac Newton, Einstein, Steven
Hawking through Penrose and Hameroff to practical theoretical and experimentalist Michael
Newton who carried out recorded experiments on more than seven thousand people.
Not all within this level will reach the advanced level of brilliance as those above.
Many, in fact most, will just advance their own personal thinking and understanding. The
most predominant question in my mind is probably the same as everyone else within this
groups. It is the most important and misunderstood question of all time namely:
“Who am I; Why am I here; and Where am I going”?
These questions have haunted me from my earliest memories because I have always
had an overriding feeling that I did not belong. This is complex because I did have caring
parents, however, notwithstanding the biological facts, the feeling that I had little connection
with them or with my sibling brother was very strong and as time advanced this feeling of
separation grew greater and greater. I also believe that this feeling of separation was mutual
because of actions and words said and which I recalled in hindsight.
So, let me summarise my travels up to this point. Not necessarily in a distinct
chronological order but in a retrospective order of thought progression.
1. Birth. From my earliest memories, a deep feeling of not belonging.
2. Categorisation. Where in the evolutional levels do, I think that I reside.
3. Advancement. Has my progression so far given me a springboard to carry on?
Considering the element that I have termed Birth. It is clear from my earliest memories
that I had an underlying feeling of not belonging to my birth family. However, this does not
single me out as a recluse. I have made significant relationships with people who I do feel
very attached to and significantly part of. This is very significant and I will relate to this in
more depth when I feel able to answer the question “Who am I?”
Now which Category do I see myself in? It is very difficult to categorise yourself, so
I sought the views of others. On examination I had to admit that their analysis of me was in
fact very accurate. They pointed out that I had absolutely no desire to fall into the producer
group and I had to agree that as a hunter gatherer I was barely adequate. They also stated that
in their opinion I had no desire for wealth or power and again I had to admit that I find money
a necessary evil and that power over others is to me an anathema. So, where does that leave
me? Well in their opinion they see me in an ivory tower surrounded by books searching for
knowledge and understanding. This therefore must result in my categorisation as part of the
thinker level. Albeit in my opinion a very low level within this group.
As to my Advancement, well the above does act as a springboard for me to progress
on my path. By necessity, if for no other reason, I need to discover why I feel connected to
some but unconnected to others, hence enter the differential world of consciousness.
5
This is a good point at which to halt, as we have reached a crossroads. For some this
may well be as far as they wish to travel. For others they may wish to select from the signposts
at these crossroads in order to travel in a different direction. There is nothing wrong with
either of these decisions. For some, probably the few, they may feel in sympathy with my
thoughts and direction of travel and continue on with me.
6
Enter The Quantum World
When we speak of consciousness it is important to qualify what we actually mean.
Philosophers since the time of Descartes have struggled to comprehend the nature of
consciousness and pin down its essential properties. The term “consciousness” would appear
to describe the experience of awareness and scientists have now acknowledged that there are
numerous states of awareness. The Oxford Dictionary defines Awareness as, “knowledge or
perception of situation or fact and self-awareness as: conscious knowledge of one’s own
character and feelings”.
It is now understood that the lowest state of awareness, often termed “Mindfulness,” relates to
the now. The present moment known as the beta state and classed as “Consciousness”.
Experts in learning have often said that seventy percent of what we sense as our learning in this
state, is not retained or remembered. That the sensory information goes in and out.
The next state of awareness, the alpha state, often termed “Subconsciousness” is the
level at which we learn faster and with greater ease. At the deeper levels of subconscious state,
physical body awareness reduces while emotional and cognitive awareness remain high. In a
dream state, you would experience the emotional effects of being attacked with no physical
manifestation.
Rising to the next level. The “Unconscious” state also known as the theta state. At
this level the state of brain wave functioning, most of the body and mind functions are at rest.
The survival mode functions, which include core memories, are active.
Above this appears another layer of awareness lying within the gamma state. A level
of “Superconsciousness” which is detached and disengaged. It is a witnessing mode of
consciousness, transcending the other three. Thus, it is a true “being” state where you just
“are.” You are no longer an actor in the drama of your life, merely a witness.
This term “Superconsciousness” does require either a leap of faith or an understanding,
where possible, around the edges of quantum theory. Once you start poking around in the
morass of consciousness studies, you soon encounter the numerous papers of Sir Roger
Penrose, the renowned Oxford physicist with his audacious theory about the quantum origins
of consciousness.
He believes we must go beyond neuroscience and into the mysterious world of quantum
mechanics to explain our rich mental life. No one quite knows what to make of this theory,
developed in conjunction with the American anaesthesiologist Stuart Hameroff.
However, as expected conventional science vehemently opposes their theory. But
without exception, the conventional science community all qualify their opposition to the
theory by stating that as Penrose, classed by his peers as a genius, is so brilliant we’d be foolish
to dismiss their theory out of hand.
So, what is the Penrose/Hameroff theory. They suggest that a deeper level of
explanation is needed. They start with the premise that consciousness is not computational,
and it’s beyond anything that neuroscience, biology, or physics can at present explain. “We
need a major revolution in our understanding of the physical world in order to accommodate
7
consciousness,” Penrose stated. He went on to say that “The most likely place, if we’re not
going to go outside physics altogether, is in this big unknown namely, making sense of quantum
mechanics.” They draw on the basic properties of quantum computing, in which bits (qubits)
of information can be in multiple states. For instance, they can be in the “on” or “off” position
at the same time. These quantum states exist simultaneously. Superposition coalesce into a
single, almost instantaneous, calculation. Quantum coherence occurs when a huge number of
things such as a whole system of electrons act together in one quantum state.
Now I do realise that the above is just a tad complex, to say the least. But it did lead
me down the rabbit hole, as the saying goes and make me look more closely at
“Superconsciousness”. This research pointed to one outstanding hypothesis regarding
superconsciousness. It was a recurring statement that memories of the mind appear to go far
beyond our physical self, reaching back to memories of the past. This has been well
documented in “Near Death Experiences” as gathered by physicians and reincarnation
memories recorded and researched involving very young children.
You require to research both the NDE and the reincarnation studies for yourself but for
me and my own research studies, I was personally convinced and wanted to discover more
about the reincarnation reports. Unknowingly this was to lead me into the realm of past lives
and the zone known as life between lives.
8
The Afterlife
There are numerous pundits who pontificate about these phenomena so it is imperative
to find an authority who has both the academic credentials and a vast quantity of reliable
recorded experiments in order to delve deeply into the concept of reincarnation. Now I mean
scientific credentials and records and not the plethora of religious and or spiritualist gurus who
proport to know but offer no proof other than dogma.
After much research I came across a Dr Michael Newton PhD. He held a doctorate in
Counselling Psychology and was a certified Master Hypnotherapist and a member of the
American Counselling Association. Dr Newton was on the faculty of several higher
educational institutions as both a teacher and counsellor. He specialised in behavioural
counselling and was a group therapy director for many community mental health centres.
What I liked about Dr Newtons work was that like most great scientific revelations it
came about accidentally. His interest in reincarnation and metaphysics he classed as only
intellectual curiosity until he worked with a young man on pain management. This client
complained of a lifetime of chronic pain on his right side. One of the tools of hypnotherapy
to manage pain is directing the subject to make the pain worse so he or she can also learn to
lessen the aching and thus acquire control. In one of his sessions involving pain intensification,
this man used the imagery of being stabbed to recreate his torment. Searching for the origins
of this image, Dr Newton eventually uncovered the subject’s former life as a World War I
soldier who was killed by a bayonet in France. Because of this he was able to eliminate the
pain altogether.
With encouragement from his clients, he began to experiment with moving some of his
subjects further back in time to before their last birth on Earth. He has clearly stated that he
was concerned that a subject’s integration of current needs, beliefs and fears would create
fantasies of recollection. However, it didn’t take long before he realised that our deep-seated
memories offer a set of past experiences which are too real and connected to be ignored. Dr
Newton came to appreciate just how therapeutically important the link is between our bodies
and events of our former lives and who we are today.
Dr Newton then stumbled onto a discovery of enormous proportions. He found it was
possible to see into the world between lives through the mind’s eye of a hypnotized subject
who could report back on the life between lives. This sparked his research as a full-time study
and before his death he had recorded over seven thousand documented sessions with subjects.
He wrote several books, well worth reading for those interested in taking this further.
9
A Regression Example
From analysing many transcripts of regression records. I believe that the following
depicts a simplified example of what transpires during a deep life regression session.
When you enter a deep state, you can’t feel your body. You know that its there. You
are aware of it but it is like being paralysed. Not in a bad or uncomfortable way. This state
is very deep and powerful. It is like being in a dream state of sleep yet being conscious enough
to be asked and answer questions. Now to explain a nonphysical experience in physical terms
is extremely difficult. Descriptions more resemble metaphors of the experience than what can
be told in pure physical terminology.
The process of regression works like this. You spend a significant amount of time
going into deep trance. A little bit less than an hour. After going into a deep trance, you
regress down in age. Stopping at certain stages to remember memories. It can be amazing
when asked at certain stages to account for things how accurate it can be without having to
think and account for time. Recall was easy and automatic.
Once regressed down to a young age you are then encouraged to enter into the mother's
womb. It is normally during this action that you first experience and encounter a distinctly
separate energy force completely separate from your body’s energy. You eventually recognise
this energy as being your true energy. It is quite different and far superior to your body’s
physical energy. Some of those who have undergone this experience have called this energy
as being their “soul”. No matter what the term used is it is obviously a symbiont life force
which is in symbiotic consort with the body.
After this you venture into a past life. On most occasions your immediate past life.
The time spent in this state and at this stage often depends on the simplicity or complexity of
the past life. It normally culminates in the death scene of the past life. I do not intend to
dwell on recalling a death scene as each is very personal and reflects the context of the life and
the experience of the soul undergoing it. If this is of interest to you, I would recommend that
you might research further this period of regression.
When it is time to move on and fully leave the physical world you will be met by either
your guide or a healing entity if the situation requires it. Once again let me stress that our
physical world metaphors are but a mere representation. It is said that if you take the
explanations which follow and magnify them thousands of times. Highlight them by multiple
dimensions and then explode them beyond the very corners of you mind, you may then have
just a hint of the beauty which I describe.
If you are met by a cleansing entity, they will probably come across as being dark and
androgynous. Please note that within this world the colour and luminance describe the
advancement of the soul. Young souls are pure white and the darker they become signifies
greater advancement. It requires an advanced soul to carry out the cleansing. It has been
described as being vacuumed, or dry cleaned, or something of that effect. It makes you feel
fresher, revitalized, crisper and cleaner than before. Sometimes you will meet familiar souls
who may convey the answer to specific things which may have happened in your life and which
troubled you much. It is then your guide will present itself.
On most occasions, but not always, your guide will come across as strong, domineering
but they will always be accepting, loving and to work with you. It is they who will answer the
10
myriad of questions that you will have. They will answer all the questions that you have
pertaining to your purpose in the past life. Lessons accomplished or not. Great clarity came
from the discussion with my guide. From my discussions and my growing awareness, it
became obvious that this was where I belonged. This was my home.
After this initial meeting with your guide and the souls cleansing your guide directs you
towards your place of residence. It is not direct but appears to be through a hub where huge
numbers of souls distribute to their place. It has been likened by subjects to be like a wheel
with a hub and with spokes radiating outwards. Others have described it like an airport with
souls coming and going in different directions from a central zone out and along exit routes to
discharge gateways.
The arrival at your place of residence, your home coming, has been described as
meeting with you peer group of souls. Some of them glow with a low slow pulsation,
indicating that they are in part still incarnated, whilst other glow fully and communicate fully,
being like you between lives. Your abode has been described as being like a bunch of grapes
on a vine where there are many bunches. This reminds me of the passage from the Book of
John 14:2 which said, “In My Father’s house are many mansions.”
Group placement is determined by soul level. After physical death, a soul's journey
back home ends with disembarkation into the space reserved for their own colony. The souls
represented in these cluster groups are intimate old friends who have about the same awareness
level.
After souls arrive back into their soul groups, they are summoned to appear before a
Council of Elders. While the Council is not prosecutorial, they do engage in direct examination
of a soul's activities before returning them to their groups.
Once settled into their group all souls undergo a period of education and development
which all souls benefit from which can last as long as desired or as long as is necessary for
further soul development and advancement. Souls have equated this as attending classes or
studying in vast libraries or being instructed in elements of creation. However, there comes
that time when it is deemed beneficial for the soul to once again leave the sanctuary of the spirit
world for another trip to Earth in order to develop further and to advance. This decision is
not an easy one. Souls must prepare to leave a world of total wisdom, where they exist in a
blissful state of freedom, for the physical and mental demands of a human body. It has been
seen how tired souls can be when re-entering the soul world. Many don't want to think about
returning to Earth again. This is especially true when they have not come close to their goals
at the end of a physical life. The rejuvenation of souls energy and personal assessment takes
longer for some souls than others, but eventually the soul is motivated to start the process of
incarnation.
While the afterlife environment is hard to leave, souls may also remember the physical
pleasures of life on Earth with fondness and even nostalgia. When the wounds of a past life
are healed and souls are again totally at one, they feel the pull of having a physical expression
to their identity. Training sessions with the soul’s counsellors and peer groups have provided
a collaborative effort to prepare our soles for the next life.
The soul must now assimilate all this information formation and take purposeful action based
upon three primary decisions:
11
• Is the soul ready for a new physical life?
• What specific lessons does the soul want to undertake to advance and develop?
• Where should it go, and who shall I be in my next life for the best opportunity to work on my
goals?
Older souls incarnate less, regardless of the population demands of their assigned
planets. When a world dies, those entities with unfinished business move on to another world
which has a suitable life form for the kind of work they have been doing. Cycles of incarnation
for the eternal soul seem to be regulated more by the internal desires of a particular soul, than
by the urgency of host bodies evolving in a universe of planets.
Souls have the freedom to choose when, where, and who they want to be in their
physical lives. Certain souls spend less time in the afterlife in order to accelerate development,
while others are very reluctant to leave. There is no question that our guides exert great
influence in this matter. Just as we were given an intake interview in the orientation phase
right after death, there are preparatory exit interviews by soul advisors to determine our
readiness for rebirth.
Once a soul has decided to incarnate again, the next stage in the return process is to be
directed to the place of life selection. Souls consider when and where they want to go on Earth
before deciding on who they will be in their new life. As you may surmise this is complex, in
order to get it right.
In the place of life selection, our souls preview the life span of more than one human
being within the same time cycle. When we leave this area, most souls are inclined toward
one leading candidate date presented to us for soul occupation. However, our spiritual advisors
give us ample opportunity to reflect upon all we have seen in the future before fore making a
final decision. This is a very complex choice and way beyond my simple explanations.
One of the last requirements before embarkation for many souls is to go before the
Council of Elders for the second time. While some souls see the Council only once between
lives, most see them right after death and just before rebirth. The afterlife is an environment
personified by order and the Elders want to reinforce the significance of a soul's goals for the
next life.
Rebirth is a profound experience. Souls getting ready for embarkation to Earth are like
battle-hardened veterans girding themselves for combat. This is the last chance for souls to
enjoy the omniscience of knowing just who they are before they must adapt to a new body, for
when they enter the new body there appears to be a switch, an amnesia switch, which when
activated stops any memories of the afterlife and life’s purpose from being remembered. Now
there are and have been exceptions of this recorded from many young children who clearly
remember past lives. However, by the time that they are seven or eight the amnesia switch
activates and their memories go.
12
Under The Microscope
The example of regression which I have recalled are but a smidgen of the complex
journeys which souls take to and from the afterlife. If it interests you then there are many
sources of research that can be followed.
There are certain aspects which a feel that I should clarify for the reader in respect of
the form that souls take within the afterlife. You may remember how I spoke of how young
souls were pure white and the darker they become signified greater advancement, well let me
elaborate.
All souls see the differentiation as shades within the following colour structure.
Primary Colour Soul Level Description
White 1 Beginning Souls
Red 2 Advancing Souls
Yellow 3 Teacher Souls
Green 4 Healer Souls
Blue 5 Master Souls
Violet 6 Ascending Masters
Purple The Higher Levels Unseen but known to be level of Higher Souls
In order to clarify the difference between these soul levels let me explain that:
In soul levels 1 and 2, there are two types of beginner souls: souls who are truly young
in terms of exposure to an existence out of the afterlife, and souls who have been reincarnating
on Earth for a long period of relative time, but still remain immature. It is believed that almost
three-quarters of all souls who inhabit human bodies on Earth today are still in the early stages
of development.
Within levels 3 and 4, it would appear that souls are at last ready for more serious
responsibilities. The relationship we have with our guides now change from teacher-student
to one of colleagues working together. Since our old guides have acquired new student groups.
It is now our turn to develop teaching skills which will eventually qualify us for the
responsibilities of being a guide to someone else.
Those within soul group 5 are both old souls and highly advanced. They exhume a
very high level of superconsciousness. It would appear very rare for researchers to come
across subjects for regression within this group. In all probability there is very little need for
these advanced souls to incarnate into our physical world.
Violet represents the highest vibratory level of the soul that has been able to be charted.
Level 1 through Level 5 are progressive points of the soul's evolution. Level 6 and beyond
represent higher advanced souls no longer requiring further physical incarnations to develop
further.
The Final Crossroads
Having come to this point on my path of enlightenment and having resolved in my own
mind the questions posed, namely:
“Who am I; Why am I here; and Where am I going”?
I feel relieved to finally understand why I had that feeling of not belonging.
understand the reason why I had felt the necessity to seek out this knowledge.
answer the above questions:
I now truly
So, let me
Who am I? I am a homo sapiens, sapiens within which there resides a symbiont life
force which by many cultures and I term “The Soul”. The Soul is truly who I am. It is a life
force which is eternal.
Why am I here? Because of the amnesia switch, I cannot at this point in time
know exactly the answer. However, I do understand that I have agreed with my elders in the
afterlife, prior to this incarnation, to resolve either problems affecting myself or in helping to
resolve the problems of others.
Where am I going? Well it must by now be obvious that no matter what happens
within this physical world, when it is my time to pass, it will be the sign to go home.
Now I can fully understand the many sceptics who may read this and dismiss it out of hand.
Also, the many who because of their religious dogma see my writing as heretical. Let me
assure you that this was my path of enlightenment. As to those with a strong religious faith, I
hope that this may give you additional hope that your faith in an afterlife is indeed true although
perhaps slightly different to what you have to date perceived.
WARNING
Now, let me again stress that these writings are mine. This is my path of
enlightenment!! I cannot tolerate those who pontificate or evangelise that their particular
religion or philosophical faith is the only one. Is the right one. Is the only one sent from their
Godhead.
All religious and faith books are not dioramas of history, nor are they written by their
God. They are all written by man. Granted these men were mostly men of wisdom, indeed
men of great wisdom, but as soon as man in general gets hold of these writings, they, in every
case and without exception, become tools of power over others. If anything, history has shown
us that, and that is wrong!!
Every one of us is freely entitled to their own faith, be it religious or philosophical.
14
Anything which advances or strengthens our personal faith must be good. There is no right or
wrong associated with this. Every religious book written is, as I have said, not works of history
but in reality, were written as allegories and require to be translated and interpreted.
Why do I feel so strongly about this? Well I come from a country steeped in the
tradition of religious missionaries. From Scotland they travelled to every corner of the world
in an attempt to indoctrinate whoever they came across. In some cases, for good, but in most
cases for bad destroying the native and often long held traditions of peoples. I also come from
a country, Scotland, who built great cities such as Glasgow, on the back of Caribbean and
American slavery. I come from a country, Scotland, where religious bigotry is still rife.
All this is totally wrong.
Do not get me wrong, there were many great and good things and people who are
Scottish. I am immensely proud to be Scottish, but our history is tainted with wrong
approaches to faith.
So, let me put into place the context of my writings, in the context of a biblical allegory.
Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, gad more faith in Jesus. He brought forward a young boy
who had five small loaves of barley bread and two small fish. Jesus ordered the crowd to sit
down in groups of fifty. He took the five loaves, looked up to heaven, gave thanks to God his
Father and passed them to his disciples to be distributed. He did the same with the two fish.
One of the best interpretations of this allegory came from Pope Francis in December 2014,
where he explained: “The parable of the multiplication of the loaves and fish teaches us exactly
this: that if there is the will, what we have never ends. On the contrary, it abounds and does
not get wasted”.
Like the loves and fish that I could bring you, I cannot make you eat!
Like all the writing in the World that I could bring you, I cannot make you read!
If anything, my advanced years and my constant search for truth and wisdom has taught me,
can be summed up by one word:
TOLERANCE
May your God go with you all.
