November and December are no exception for fun in London. The capital is busy and buzzing 

with lots of wonderful events, shopping crowds and beautiful light displays. There’s Bonfire Night 

on 5th November with spectacular fireworks all over the city and the incredible visual experience 

that is at Diwali - the Festival of Light in Trafalgar Square on 3rd November.

in 2013 when Chefs Maurilio 

Molteni and Daniele Pampagnin 

opened the Venetian-Italian

Make Your 

Own Christmas 

Wreath

Flower Designs 

A Christmas door wreath is perfect 

for creating lasting first impressions 

and adding some Christmas cheer 

to the outside. Whether you live in 

a small flat or a large house anyone 

can have a door wreath. 

First, you will need some materials 

which you can get from your local florist, 

garden centre or online… 

You will need: 

A wreath ring or base, florist's wire, string, 

fresh or fake sprigs of spruce - pine, holly 

or other foliage, decorations, a glue gun 

and ribbon.

1. Creating the base 

First, you need a wreath base - choose from a 

wire ring or a floral foam wreath. You can also 

make your own ring from thick wire or a metal 

coat hanger by bending it into a circle. Or 

you might prefer to buy a readymade spruce 

wreath to add decorations to. 

2. Pick the theme 

Decide how you will decorate your wreath. 

Do you want something traditional, natural 

or modern? For a traditional look, use lots of 

lush reds with holly sprays, roses or berries, 

and some rich red ribbon to make a beautiful 

statement bow. For a more modern look, go 

for sparkly baubles, berries and lights. Or to 

create a natural garden style wreath use a 

variety of berries, dried fruit, nuts and cones. 

3. Attach the stems 

To build your wreath, start by 

securing foliage stems to the 

base using lightweight 

floral wire. Bend your wire 

into a U-shape using 

one side to bend round 

the foliage. Overlap 

the stems as you go to 

avoid gaps. Keep adding 

stems until the wreath 

base is fully covered and 

looks thick and lush. 

4. Add the Christmas lights 

Your wreath should be starting to take shape 

and looking a bit like a doughnut, so now if 

you want to use lights you can wrap them 

around your wreath through your hole in the 

middle. 

5. Add the Christmas decorations 

Now you can add your decorations. These 

can be attached using string, wire or glue. 

Using your ribbon to make a large bow and 

attach this to the top or bottom of your 

wreath in the centre. Add your decorations 

to your wreath securing them to the wire. To 

secure, poke the wire through your wreath 

and tie it at the back, if using string. Keep 

your decorations in groups of three and you 

should only need three sets depending how 

large your wreath is. Leave the same amount 

of space between each set of decorations. You 

can fill any gaps with your berries or smaller 

decorations. Use a glue gun to secure if 

you find wiring difficult. 

6. Finishing your wreath 

By now your wreath should be 

looking wonderfully wintery so 

just trim any loose bits. You can 

also give your wreath a finishing 

touch of snow or glitter spray. 

Now it’s ready to hang!

The festive season will soon be 

upon us, so it’s time to start 

thinking of the big C-word! 

London is illuminated at this 

time of year, with Christmas 

lights seemingly adorning every 

corner of the capital. To help 

you choose where to take your 

family and friends to have a 

well-deserved cup of mulled 

wine, we have pulled together 

the best Christmas 

lights in London. 

Oxford Street 

When you think of London Christmas 

lights, Oxford Street is normally the 

first to spring to mind. This haven of 

all things shopping is transformed 

into a winter wonderland from early 

November with twinkling lights 

hanging over this famous street. The 

big switch-on is sure to be a huge 

event with live music, performances 

and over one million spectators. 

Shepherd Market 

Nestled away in Mayfair, Shepherd 

Market is a real hidden gem of 

festive fun at Christmas. Boutiques, 

pubs and brasseries stay open 

late on the night of the switch-on 

where visitors can enjoy mulled 

wine, mince pies and even a spot 

of carol singing.

Carnaby Street 

Fancy huge shopping discounts and 

beautiful Christmas lights? This great 

combination can be found on Carnaby 

Street throughout November and 

December with special events galore and 

the local shops and bars offer discounts to 

celebrate the festive season. 

Last year’s decorations were Bohemian 

Rhapsody-themed so you can expect 

something equally impressive this year. 

The Enchanted 

Woodland - 

Syon Park 

The Syon Park Enchanted Woodland 

event transports you out of West 

London and into a magical forest 

within the 600-year-old gardens. Over 

400 different tree species are lit up 

in a rainbow of colours, with lasers 

and strobe lights putting the finishing 

touches to this spectacular event. The 

Enchanted Woodland is open on Friday, 

Saturday and Sunday evenings from 15th 

November to 1st December this winter. 

Seven Dials 

Heading back towards Covent Garden 

and Seven Dials hosts another shoppingrelated 

Christmas lights switch-on. Last 

year’s event combined a live orchestra 

and free wreath making with a popup 

curling rink and – of course – an 

impressive light installation as well 

as discounts across shops, bars and 

restaurants in the area. 

Covent Garden 

For something with that wow-factor, head 

down to the famous Covent Garden where 

the market buildings and outdoor area 

are draped in 30,000 lights, with London’s 

biggest hand-picked Christmas tree the 

main attraction – 55ft tall and weighing 

1.5 tonnes! There are mistletoe and glitter 

balls in the Market Building and an ‘infinity 

chamber’ light installation in Conduit Court.

I have been here for three months. 

How did you become a doorman? 

The desire to be a doorman came 

from my love of working in the 

hospitality industry. I really enjoy the 

job and feel like I’m a natural! 

Could you describe what your job 

might entail on a day-to-day basis? 

We welcome the guests, trying to make them 

feel a bit special and at home. Our goal is to 

leave a long-lasting first impression. We also 

help with their questions. 

What would you say is the 

most interesting thing 

about your job? 

I meet lots of new 

people every day - 

talking to them and 

making connections.

Building a true connection with guests and, of 

course, receiving good feedback from them. 

What’s the most unusual thing that you’ve 

encountered whilst working as a doorman? 

I have worked at different hotels throughout my 

career and guests have recognised me even if 

I’m at a different hotel! This is important to me 

as it means they truly remember me and I have 

managed to create a lasting impression. After 

all, isn’t the whole point of hospitality to create 

good memories? I have also received gifts from 

some guests as a thank you gesture!

Fireworks

3. Party from the 20’s through to the ’90s 

Every year the Royal Festival Hall hosts 

a huge vintage New Year’s Eve party 

with five pop-up nightclubs, a hair and 

beauty salon, walkabout entertainment,

4. On one of London’s famous bridges 

Not all of the riverside is ticketed for the 

fireworks, so if you head a little further 

away and get there early you can get a 

great spot on one of these bridges to see 

the fireworks in all their glory - Southwark 

Bridge, Tower Bridge, Vauxhall Bridge, 

Lambeth Bridge or the Millennium Bridge. 

5. Down South 

Hilly Fields in Brockley are a bit further 

out but a quieter option for spectators.

SPENCER CHAPLIN 

Spencer Chaplin is a Swiss musician, singer and songwriter. With the legendary silent film 

star Charlie Chaplin for a grandfather, Spencer was surrounded by music, creativity and 

entertainment from a very early age. 

What has been your best gig to date? 

My best gig would have to be St. Patrick’s day 

2017 in Zermatt, Switzerland. We were up in 

the mountains with hundreds of people dressed 

up with the Matterhorn as the backdrop. It was 

beautiful and so much fun! 

How would you describe your music? 

Old-time rock ‘n’ roll and Americana. 

Who inspires you and why? 

Bob Dylan because his songwriting is 

effortless. No one can write a song like him. 

He is one of a kind! 

What is your favourite cocktail? 

I don’t drink cocktails but If I had to choose 

I would say a Moscow Mule. 

What has been the craziest moment in 

your career so far? 

Moving to London and starting from scratch 

after living in Switzerland for most of my life. 

What are some of your favourite songs 

in your set? 

Bob Dylan - Don’t Think Twice It’s Alright, 

Bruce Springsteen - Dancing In The Dark, 

Stray Cats - Rock This Town. 

Who have you had the pleasure of 

working with? 

In 2015 I had the pleasure of touring Brazil 

with some of the best musicians in the 

country. I played with Armandinho Macedo 

and Sandra de Sa in some amazing venues. 

It was a great time in my life. 

What have you got coming up? 

Working on some new material which will 

hopefully follow with a tour.
