CELEBRATES 10 YEARS
What a difference a decade
makes...After years offering
dancing boys, lap dances, and
questionable morals at best,
Adonis Lounge New York City
is set to celebrate their 10-Year
Anniversary event this Friday
night 10/25 at Evolve Bar (221
East 58th Street).
Adonis has transformed NYC’s
go-go boy scene one lousy
conversation at a time, bringing
along clientele from all over
the country and plenty of
international folks as well in
cities including Las Vegas, Palm
Springs, Long Beach, Phoenix,
and of course the two big boys-
Los Angeles & NYC.
Adonis has become known for
featuring all the biggest porn
stars, cam models, IG stars, boys
next door, and of course a few
annoying neighbors next door
you just can’t seem to avoid.
While tastes vary, a few things
tend to be universal at Adonisyou’ll
most likely engage in
dialogue that makes you infinitely
stupider, you’ll compromise both
ethics and values through a series
of poor decisions that leave you
more broke, but you’ll leave the
club with a smile on your face
worth every dolla’ bill.
If you’re just passing through the
city this weekend or a seasoned
veteran of NYC nightlife looking
for a fun night out, Adonis is the
place to be with 40+ models,
dancers, and porn stars scheduled
for the biggest stripper night in
NYC history.

The beautiful and talented drag queen
Alyssa Edwards (Justin Dwayne Lee
Johnson) will be coming to Carolines in the
heart of Times Square for five appearances
November 1 to 3, 2019. The serial pageant
queen, after winning multiple crowns, rose
to super stardom after appearing as a
contestant on Season 5 of “RuPaul’s Drag
Race” & “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars,”
she became a fan favorite.
Her edgy and warm personality afforded
her a household name, as did her role in
the Netflix docuseries, “Dancing Queen.”
Still performing and touring both nationally
and globally, Edwards also teaches dance
in her hometown. I had a blast speaking
to her regarding her drag experiences and
her quirky sense of humor.

I was stalking you on
Google, and you have
more titles than any
queen I know.
Thank you for reminding
me. I need that mid-week
Wednesday over here in
Dallas, Texas.
When did you decide
to become a pageant
queen?
I don’t know if I decided
to become a pageant
queen or if it was just in
my blood. I’ve always
been bred a through-andthrough
Texan, so it’s a
southern thing. We grew
up watching Miss Texas in
my family. I can remember
being a little boy in front
of a TV thinking, “This is
so incredible! Why are my
sisters is not wanting to
do this?” My mom would
always joke with me. She
said, “Well, none of my
daughters want Miss
Texas, but my son did.”
It’s true. I just remember
watching these pageants
on TV thinking, “This is
incredible! How much fun
would this be?” All the
women were so poised; it
was true perfection. I was
just always mesmerized
with pageants, so when I
started to do drag I really
ventured into the artistry
kind of by accident. I went
to an open-stage night. I
found myself on stage. I
won that night too! It was
judged through audience
response. It took off.
People told me that I was
born to be on stage. I had
braces, I was a young little
gay, big, wide eyes… and
this was before “Drag
Race,” before TV drag was
even heard of. So to get a
stage you have to have a
title. So I thought, “Wait
a minute, there is a drag
queen pageant?” Then I
saw a flyer. Oh my gosh,
you are taking me down
memory lane with this! I
just had to do it. My friend
said, “You don’t know
anything about this,” but I
had to do it. Laken Edwards
became my drag mother,
and she was a pageant
expert. It was like “Little
Miss Perfect: Part Two.”
She had me in rehearsals,
and we wound up in Miss
Texas, and you know what
Eileen, I made the top 10.
I think it was by accident,
because there was a pool
of 45 contestants. I was
the youngest, and I was
so excited and so eager.
I really believe it was my
talent that got me into the
top 10.

But you’re also so pretty.
Thanks very much, but you
know, in my earlier years
it was a creative work in
progress. So that’s the
story in a nutshell.
Then by the time you
got to “Drag Race,” you
were experienced.
By the time I got to
“RuPaul’s” I had already
been Miss Gay USA, I had
been Miss Gay America for
a good couple of months,
and I thought at that point
I was at the pinnacle of my
career. Little did I know
there was a whole other
testament that was being
opened. I just thought
being a small-town guy,
drag extraordinaire
performer, that I was at the
top. Then I realized, “Wait
a minute, drag is art, and
art is subjective.” There
were so many different
styles and types. It was so
fascinating to me to meet
other guys like myself with
a whole different medium
added to the word drag.
I fell short. I don’t want to
say I fell, because I learned
so much. I was counting
on winning. I thought
to myself that this is the
world’s largest pageant,
and I am the crème de la
crème. When RuPaul said
“Alyssa Edwards, sashay
away,” I thought, “Well,
hold on, things were not
supposed to go down like
this.” I was having my Sally
Field moment from “Steel
Magnolias”: “It’s not
supposed to happen like
this.” This whole thing with
Alyssa Edwards and my
career had taken another
turn. It took another
fascinating turn, and here
I am, going to appear
at Carolines. This was a
whirlwind. This was nine
years ago; I’m going to
be 40 in January. Can you
believe that?
I cannot.
I remind myself every
night when I get home,
or my body reminds me
first, “You’re not that little
spring chicken anymore.”
I remind myself every
night that I’ve had such an
amazing life. I am living my
life on stage, day after day.
I’m just so grateful. Drag
really is alive. It makes
people smile, it makes
people feel a certain way.
It’s given me the strength
and the courage to face
my fears head on. That is
the biggest reward that I
get from all of this.
So tell me about
Carolines. What can your
fans look forward to?
Well, with Alyssa Edwards,
always expect the
unexpected. It will be a
night of a million giggles
and a really good time. I
think what people think
of me and my character
is they envision an all-out
southern shindig. It’s like
going to a barbecue on
Sunday. You hear stories,
you hear laughs, and that’s
what I’m all about. That’s
what my character is. Crazy
but fun, a good time.
BY IAN-MICHAEL BERGERON
@ianmichaelinwonderland
Last week I wrote
about Therapy’s
soul-fulfilling new
brunch, Sunday
Services. What I
didn’t mention is
that afterward my
boyfriend and I,
drunk and drunker,
boarded a downtown
train to The Phluid
Project.
I’ve been to several
events at The Phluid
Project, New York’s
gender-neutral clothing
store. I’m familiar with
their beautiful employees,
their brightly colored
windows and their shoes
tall enough that I’m not
sure I could walk in them.
But there was a new display
that I wasn’t familiar with.
Stretching across the center aisle
was a set-up for Mattel’s new dolls,
called simply “Creatable World.” The
individual dolls don’t have names,
because Mattel doesn’t want any labels
attached to them: Creatable World is
their first gender-neutral doll.
If you’ve seen the ads, you get the gist:
The dolls have short hair and come with
a long-haired wig, as well as clothing
from wedges to sneakers, skirts to camo
pants. The idea is simple: The dolls can
be whatever their creator wants them to
be, and can change as they want them
to. No labels and no shame: Let kids be
kids.
I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.
My parents believed in letting me be
a kid. When I wanted Barbie, or all
five Spice Girls, or Sailor Moon (and
it was usually one of the three), my
parents had no problems with it. (Of
course, there’s always fear that your
child will be bullied, but is that worth
suppressing who they really are? My
parents, luckily, said no.) I had a specific
doll from an anime that was my favorite:
Lain. She had a flat chest and short
hair; sometimes I would pretend she
was a boy, putting her
in baggy pants from a
Bratz Boyz doll.
And here it was: the
doll I always wanted,
but didn’t exist.
Two of the six dolls
looked like my
boyfriend and I, and
our vodka-soaked
brains didn’t need
to think twice.
If I said I hadn’t
purchased a doll
in a long time, I’d
be lying. That’s
something
I’ve always
loved about
“collectors” of
dolls and the like: a part
of them never really grew up, a part
that shouldn’t grow up, a part of them
that’s creative and fun—a part of them
that still wants to play. (Lina Bradford’s
collection is INSANE.)
Playtime
I called my mom to tell her about the
dolls. She told me that, on a recent
vacation, she woke up early and
went to the beach to collect shells.
While walking along the shore, she
had a thought: I’m playing. I’m on an
adventure in a new land, on a quest for
the prettiest shell. I could hear her smile
on the phone. “I don’t remember the
last time I’d played,” she told me.
She’d already seen Mattel’s Creatable
World ad online. “When I saw the child
with the buzzed hair in a tutu playing
with the doll, it reminded me so much
of you.”
It’s a beacon of hope in the world we’re
living in. Despite reading about fear
and bigotry every day in the news,
specifically anything concerning The
White House, Mattel has released
a gender-neutral doll—and, more
importantly, they’ve released said doll
because studies show it will sell.
When my boyfriend and I got home, the
first thing we did was unpackage our
new dolls and play.
THOMAS
TALKS
ABOUT: THE SILENT
I surprised my
boyfriend of four
months with a special
night out for his 28th
birthday two days
ago. We got in a small
spat after having a
few drinks and he
stopped talking to
me for the rest of the
night. We still spent
the night together,
but in silence. I tried
talking to him before
he left in the morning,
but he gave me
nothing. We’ve talked
every day since we
met, always texting,
and now NOTHING.
He won’t even answer
a call from me, but
I know he’s fine
because he has posted
on IG. I have no idea
what happened, and
I’m really anxious.
We even had plans
to spend the holidays
together. IDK what
to do, and I’m hurt.
-Male, Gay, 29
If you’ve been dating
for four months, calling
each other boyfriend
and planning for the
holidays, then simply
disappearing is not
appropriate. You’re
both adults, and the
silent treatment is
pathetic. If he needs
space, he needs to
use his big boy words
and say it. I’m sorry
this is happening to
you; it’s very frustrating
when people don’t
communicate what
they’re thinking or
feeling. It makes sense
that you’re hurt—I
would be too. More
importantly, this dude
is showing you how he
handles conflict, and
it’s not good. This will
suck to hear, but unless
he comes back with
a VERY good reason,
move the f*ck on.
I work with my best
friend, and she is sort
of having guy trouble
with someone she just
started dating maybe
like three months
ago. They keep taking
breaks, on again
off again, all that
dramatic shit. She’s so
freaking moody when
things with him aren’t
going well and then
acts like she’s on cloud
nine when everything
is fine. It’s like a
whiplash day to day
entirely dependent on
if this guy is nice to
her or not. To make
it worse, when things
aren’t perfect with
him, she takes it out
TREATMENT
on everyone else.
She’s always like this
with guys, and it’s
so annoying. Should
I tell her to knock it
off or just wait for
this relationship to
inevitably end so she’s
stable again? -Male,
Gay, 27
Good friends are
able to both give and
receive feedback.
It’s possible that she
doesn’t realize how
much her moods are
connected to this guy
or how she takes it out
on others. Whether she
likes the feedback or
not, it’s something she
should be made aware
of. However, how you
provide that feedback
is very important.
I’d wait for the right
moment and start
with something like,
“I noticed something
recently, and I’m
curious if you’ve
noticed it too.” Then
ask her if she’s noticed
how her mood seems
to be really attached
to what’s going on in
her relationship. Try
not to accuse her of
anything and just be
open to exploring it
with her. “Stop acting
like a bitch because of
this guy!” is probably
not going to get you
very far.
CELEBRITY CORRESPONDENT
Maddelynn Hatter
Pursing drag as an art for the past 12 years, Maddelynn
Hatter can often be seen at The Ritz, The Rosemont
and Macri Park. She will be featuring her own immersive
vampire Halloween party in Brooklyn on Halloween. This
party could very well mark a new trend in parties and in
drag entertainment. We shared questions and answers
regarding her career and featured show.
What do you like most about
performing in drag?
I like being asked to tell a story
mostly. Bring the audience through a
moment with you, giving emotion in
a way that they may have not seen
before. My performances are more
for me as I use them a lot as a way
of therapy to work out my own shit.
I am a really open book, lol! You can
ask me pretty much anything and I’ll
give you an answer. It may not be
the answer you wanted, but I’ll give
it to you.
Where can people see you if they
want to?
I do a show at Macri Park called
roadhouse every second and fourth
Sunday, Boop at The Ritz every
Sunday, Trifecta at the Rosemont
every first Thursday. And then
I guest and have a couple new
regular shows on the horizon.
Since “Dragula” happened my
travelling gigs have shot up, and
now I’m gonna be traveling a lot
and getting out there more, which is
really exciting, because I really love
meeting new people and seeing
new places!
What are you doing for
Halloween?
I have put together my very first
production called “Noctis Sanguis,”
which is latin for Night Blood. It’s a
fully immersive vampire den party at
C’mon Everybody in Brooklyn where
you will be pulled through the event
and through a story where you will
be able to see what it’s like to be
seduced by a coven of vampires.
What projects are you working on
for the future?
I’m working on a bunch of new looks
and art videos for my Patreon and
my online content over all. It’s all
super exciting!
