It is with a heavy heart that I announce the loss of one
of the UKs premier pinstripers.
He was an exuberant, beard sporting, roller skating
figure, known to many as Brother Lee Shove.
One of the UKs prolific pinstripers who was a
fixture at so many of the UK & EU Kustom Kulture,
Hot Rod, Bike & VW shows.
He was also an excellent teacher of the craft.
Someone I was proud to call a friend.
As many of you will know Simon was a regular
contributor to the magazine too, reviewing pinstriping
brushes, paints and other products for us.
He apparently suffered an aneurism on Friday 28th
June and despite excellent care passed away on
Tuesday 2nd July. Facebook tributes came pouring in
from around the globe.
Simon will be greatly missed and our sympathies go
out to his friends and family.
LEE MORGAN ARTWORX
“Lee Morgan first picked
up an airbrush following a
serious motorcycle accident
in 2011. Airbrushing
seemed to come naturally
and was great therapy
during Lee’s recovery.
Airbrushing quickly
developed into a hobby for
Lee, and this is now more
than just a personal passion
and is at the point where
he is taking up airbrushing
full time.
Lee is opening up at The British Ironwork Centre near Oswestry in
Shropshire, and will be offering custom airbrush artwork projects to
customers both in person and online. Lee has painted an array of engine
covers, motorbikes, bicycle frames, bonnets, vehicle panels, canvas and
his catalogue of outstanding work can be viewed on his Facebook page,
For the last couple of years Vintage Pinstripe has been holding regular oneday
workshops, which introduce groups of up to 10 students to Pinstriping.
People arrive on a Saturday morning from various parts of the country to
spend a day in North London exploring this specialised form of vehicle and
vintage art.
You paint for the entire day (except when you’re eating, food’s included
FEATUREDARTIST
PROFITT
FEATUREDARTIST
I am Dallas Profitt, a 23 year old beginner
pinstriper from Franklin, Ohio looking
to find my place in the pinstriping
community. I always loved looking at the
lines on cars and bikes going to car shows
as a kid. My father has always been into
cars, so from an early age I found myself
being around a lot of hot rods. From
the days I was in elementary school and
moving forward, I always loved being
in art class. I was born with the gift for
drawing so pinstriping kind of almost
came naturally to me.
To me, it’s the perfect mix of my love for
art, and my passion for cars that grabbed
my attention.
A few years ago I started trying to draw
designs with a pen on every piece of
paper I could find. Until one day I went
to my local paint store and bought my
first Mack brush and a can of One Shot
paint. Since then I’ve been practicing
everyday and trying out new brushes and
different ideas. Some of my favourite
brushes include Todd Hanson’s King 13s,
Von Dago Signature series brushes, and
Mack will always be my favourite. As far
as paint goes, I have been loyal to One
Shot paint, I have not used another brand
in the few short years I have been doing
pinstriping. My goal is to stay focused
and get better on every job.
I am completely humbled to be a part
of this community. I was blessed with
an awesome set of parents who taught
me respect. They always pushed me to
do great things and told me I could do
anything I want with my life. So I figured
I’d give this a shot, and now I don’t see
ever doing anything other than custom
paint and designs. I still have a lot of
years ahead of me to get better, it’s the
only thing I hope to do.
BETWEEN THE LINES
Steve has been pinstriping for more than 50 years and has gained a worldwide reputation.
A charter member of the PINSTRIPING HALL OF FAME, he has pioneered many new looks in
pinstriping and has taught many newcomers to perfect their own style through both group and
1-2-1 classes as well as his popular Wizard Pinstriping DVD tutorials and signature brushes. The
aim of this column is to inspire pinstripers of all levels in their use of colour and design.
Steve explores some of the possible situations you might face as
a striper and ways to perform your way to a bigger paycheck
and more loyal customers. Think like a successful pinstriper
and develop your repertoire so that when you come upon
a challenge, you have the tools. These photos might
help you develop your demographic into a wider
and more interested audience. If nothing else, you
can become more useful to more customers by
possessing a wider field of expertise.
EAGLE ART & SCROLL WORK
This piece is a faring on a newer Harley-Davidson. The
customer asked for the eagle and I finished it with a splash
of scroll work. As an accent it gives the bird movement and
flare without overtaking the art. Pinstriping as “garnish”, an
accent to the primary artwork.
SPEED & ACCURACY AT THE STURGIS RALLY
At a motorcycle rally such as the “Sturgis” rally, where up to 500,000
people might show up, its expensive and hectic to say the least.
Pressure is on to do a good job as well as turn a profit after the
huge expense of being there. Speed and accuracy are important.
That is the backdrop for this job - customers are in a hurry to get
back on the road and yet want you to perform magic in an hour.
Colors “Harley” orange is a big one asked for. I like to mix a couple
of shades for the low end stuff like this. Centerline and go, no grid
or pencil lines. You need to have a large measure of confidence and
skill to execute this volume of work in 10 straight days while keeping
your cool if something goes wrong. Yet, with customer watching and
glancing at his watch, you will hold their attention if you remember
that you have put in the practice time and know you can WOW
him for a good price. The key to success at a large event like this is
YEARS OF PRACTICE, good design and speed...
REAR FENDER This is a shorter area yet the color and style must
match. Line amount, that is the number of lines, as well as the
design concept must be held consistent throughout the piece. The
funny thing about these rallies is that if I am busy, I go as fast as I can
without looking rushed. Customers will quickly sense if you are out
of sorts or harried and become nervous. Keep your cool and slow
down, money isn’t as important as the quality of your product.
www.pandkg.com l 13

BETWEEN THE LINES
CLASSY & UNDERSTATED
My customer had simple
taste, and asked for subtle
and complimentary,
meaning he wanted the
work to be classy, quiet
and understated. I chose
to use the interior color on
the stripes. This made the
color choice easy, however
I needed to start with tan
and add white and a little
yellow to hit the color.
Lines were limited and
kept to a minimum.
CLIENT DETAILS
At a smaller, slower rally- this motorcycle has four colors utilizing a rare combination
of dagger and scroll styles mixed together. I usually keep them apart, not on the same
job, but occasionally (and reluctantly) I will mix the two together. When you make time
to add the details, and the customer seems to want a little more than two colors, let
him have what he wants. What usually happens is that they will look over your displays
and either trust your abilities or not (see display piece). The selling, for me, is done
quietly in front of my tent on my display rack.
ON-SITE WITH A CLIENT
This was quite a challenge - this customer cornered me at a rally
and asked if I would come by his place after the rally and do his
bike “on site” at his shop as he didn’t have it there. I explained that
it would be a little out of the way and that I would have to charge
extra. Once we established a price and I took a deposit, I gave him
about 2-3 hours worth of time to execute a very expensive job.
Don’t be afraid to ask for the extra money when jobs are truly out
of the ordinary. He will be back for more.
LOADED UP
This job is the overall shot of a finished piece- loaded up.
Customer had a more broad appreciation for the colors
and design. I gave him plenty of splash and attention. In
talking to him beforehand, I learned that he kept referring
to the more aggressive photos in the display area.
14 l P&KG Aug/Sept 19

BETWEEN THE LINES
SHOW OFF!
Fine art and just showing off! Here we are
pulling out all the stops - giving it all we
got and more. This piece was a gift to my
revered friend Mike Lavallee who hosted
a get together at his shop several years
ago. Knowing his high standard of talent
and insatiable need for quality art, I pulled
together a gold leaf and striping panel that
took several hours. You will develop your
skills only by practice, observation and
dedication. Take pride and take your time.
TRUCK PINSTRIPING
This is on a big truck, a two color quick job but lots
of detail and panache. There is much more moving
around and working on ladders on a job like this,
whereas on a motorcycle - everything is right there
in front of you. Keep this in mind when quoting
these big jobs, because they take much more time
and involve more danger of injury by falling. I spoke
to this customer at length making sure he got what
he wanted, and where he wanted it. I had to refuse a
couple of places he wanted it because of rivets, and
other encumbrances. Think before you climb!
FILLING QUIET TIMES
Here is a sample of work I do at a
show, or rally when it is dead. Passersby
will often just stop and watch if
you are doing something interesting. It
helps to break the monotony as well
as perhaps spark interest in your work.
Have cards at the ready and be willing
to discuss what you are doing with
those showing interest. You never know
who’s watching!
SELF PROMOTION
In my shop I want hanging work that wows and amuses
customers. I thought up this tribal piece first, then thought
how cool it would look with the ravens and fire. Notice that the
stripes only accent the tribal. Hardly and “fluff” except for a
little in the middle. Here, I tried to make it “work” by distributing
just a small amount of pinstriping among gold leaf and fire and
wildlife... Four features that compose a nice, balanced piece.
Pinstriping as an accent only. This is one of my favourites.
Well, that’s a sampling of circumstances and situations that you
might find yourself in, as well as possible solutions. Pinstriping
takes many forms and offers many possibilities if you are
prepared and skilled to handle different situations. Reach out
for the next level always. Never stop learning and growing.
Till next time.....
Marcelo Lobão is a Brazilian
Tattoo artist, and pioneered
Pinstriping and kustom
kulture in his country.
Marcelo worked at Ink Addiction Tattoos
in Michigan, USA, for a few years, and
had the opportunity to see up close the
creations of Ed Roth and several other
makers and artists from the hotrod scene
and Kustom Art at the Detroit Autorama
events. He gained support from the local
artist Kevin Corder in learning the art of
Pinstriping and initiating his work.
He also tattooed for consecutive two years
at the “A-bombers old style weekend”
event in Sweden at the invitation of Mike
Pins and Tattoo Needles where he was
able to get to know the most traditional
hot rod scene in Scandinavia.
In Brazil he was responsible for the
first events and parties of Kulture
Kustom making networking possible for
people who also love this lifestyle. With
workshops and classes of pinstriping,
he has been sharing this technique and
culture for more than a decade throughout
the country. The difficulty in getting and
importing supplies for his work led him to
develop his own ink, the Lobão Kustom
Paints, now used by most of the lettering
and pinstriping artists in Brazil.
In his illustration work, Marcelo was
influenced by the Easyriders and Outlaw
bikers magazine, the entire punk and skate
universe of the 80s, and Kustom artists,
from the pioneers to present-day all over
the world.
Currently, he is working on a project for
online pinstriping courses, where he can
teach this technique to students from all
over the country. The result is incredible,
and the artist’s greatest satisfaction is
being able to spread the culture and give
more people the ability to survive in art.
FEATUREDARTIST
24 l P&KG Aug/Sept 19
Iam an artist from the Inland Northwest. I live in
a very small community near Moscow, Idaho.
As far back as I can remember, I’ve been
dabbling in art since I was a child. My mother
always encouraged me to draw and gave insight
on what I needed to improve on. She is an artist in
her own right through her singing but has a keen
eye for detail.
Throughout my childhood years my interests
changed and at times my art would take a back
burner. I didn’t take my art serious until after
meeting my husband who had influenced me with
the classic car hobby. With that I was exposed to
automotive art displayed at some of the car shows,
which stirred my interest to get back into drawing.
I started in graphite pencil then slowly made the
transition to acrylic, then on to 1-shot enamel.
That’s when I discovered the kustom kulture and
lowbrow art scene.
The first artist who had an impact on me with
this style was Nick Sinclair. His car drawings
and monster art really attracted my attention
and I’ve been a fan ever since. Through Nick I
discovered other lowbrow artists and pinstripers.
My inspiration for pinstriping came from another
friend, Todd Jones, who had guided me to the
direction of what supplies I needed and offered
some guidelines. This is when I was introduced to
a well known pinstriper, Von Dago. Dago has been
a great supporter over the years and is always
given help when I needed most. I took a break from
my car paintings and solely focused on practicing
pinstriping.
In 2017 I was invited to participate in the ‘Skull
Canvas Helmet Art Show’ hosted by Lawerence
Gardinier, another fantastic automotive artist! This
event showcased various helmet designs painted by
numerous of talented artists. The helmet I bought
from Larry was an NOS (new old stock) helmet from
the early ‘70’s. It was painted in bright red and
my immediate vision for it was an eyeball. It was a
challenging yet most enjoyable project I had worked
on! Unbeknownst to me, this would be the birth of
my fascination with eyes!
A few months later I was fortunate to become
friends with another well-known artist: Mike
Lavallee. I’ve been a fan of his work for many years,
since the days of Overhaulin’. Surprisingly Mike
invited me to his private event called the ‘Monster
Bash’ held at his shop in Snohomish, Washington.
It’s an invitation only where a few highly respected
artists from around the globe gather together for
a weekend panel jam. This event had such a huge
impact on me. I didn’t paint much, I was more or
less a fly on the wall! I knew this experience was a
special one and I wanted to absorb everything that
I could, not knowing if I would ever get a chance to
experience something like this again. Witnessing
the talent and the camaraderie between the artists
and the entirety atmosphere is indescribable. If
there could be an artist heaven, this would be it,
and I am forever grateful for Mike to allow me to
have this experience! The monster bash changed
my perspective and given me a new drive and
inspiration to push my inner limits. ‣

want to continue pursuing this kustom kulture art style and
hopefully give others the inspiration through my likes of work
as many others have given me!
In recent months I have added House of Kolor and Auto-Air
colors to my arsenal. With my type of work, the urethane and
water-based paints help speed up the dry time. The airbrush
From the dirty beaches of Los Angeles, Venice and the power plant, comes the new art book...
"GRATISFACTION:
THE UNASPIRATIONAL ART OF BIGTOE".
BigToe was raised in SoCal on a steady beach-rat diet of Ed
Roth, Mad Magazine and Surfer Magazine's Rick Griffin. After
over 20 years in the Southern California surfing and apparel
industry, he started painting for public exhibition in 2006.
The Artist creates art with a casual, tongue-in-cheek sense of
humor and playful eroticism that offers a nostalgic escape in
our fast-paced and ever-changing world. His art is inspired
by the confluence of Tiki, Kustom and Surf culture. The fusion
of these seemingly disparate lifestyles has always been an
obvious one to the artist: all 3 are outsider ways of life.
The last vestiges of wild west renegades.
The book is a prodigious collection of over 175
paintings, mugs, and designs from 2006-present.
Ifirst found myself blown away and intrigued by art when I saw my brother
drawing one day. I thought how incredible that he is able to create
something from nothing! I knew I wanted to be able to convey my ideas
and have people mesmerized by what I wanted to show them. So I started
drawing early and soon I was getting recognition in school and elsewhere.
It wasn’t until the birth of my son that I found myself home a lot more
without a lot of fun stuff to do, so it occurred to me to start a new hobby
because I was getting burnt out from drawing and feeling limited by paper. I
decided to try my hand at wood carving but quickly realized it would be far
too messy and time consuming (not to mention cramping my hand).
I already knew I wanted to carve “organic” works of art, meaning flesh and
bone based images but since I had decided carving wasn’t what I wanted, I
would need to learn sculpting!
Water based clay is intimidating and
messy! You have limited working
time before it begins to dry out so I
discovered early on in my research
there are other types of clay. I settled
on polymer clay for my works due to
the fact that it must be baked in an
oven to cure it. No kiln needed just a
dedicated convection oven.
I started with the idea of “functional
art” knowing my disdain for art that
you can not touch and therefore serves
better as a dust collector. Beginning
with simple things like cellphone cases
then onto lighter Sleeves and then
water pipes and accessories.‣
Sammy Lea’s Retro Emporium combines
my love of art and design in fashion (and
weddings), in short, give me a brief or a
challenge and I’ll paint it on a jacket for you!
I started back in 2015, just after my own
wedding. I realised there really wasn’t much
on the market for alternative couples; we
really struggled to find anything we felt
comfortable wearing for the big day. As soon
as we returned from our honeymoon I started
working on an alternative custom wedding
sign, featuring skulls and our married name,
to hang in our house – that was the start of
the business launching. As soon as I shared
it to social media, the orders started rolling
in. I was doing a full day at my boring ‘day
job’, coming home and working until 11/12 at
night to keep on top of orders from my own
little business. Within a few months it had
got to the stage that the day job wasn’t even
feasible anymore, as I had so many orders to
complete, so it was fantastic to say goodbye
to the 9-5!‣
www.pandkg.com l 33

FEATUREDARTIST
We then very quickly moved from
offering just alternative wedding signage
to painting, upcycling and generally
pimping client’s vintage jackets too.
It’s a great way to breathe new life into
something that’s been lurking in your
wardrobe unused, that you just can’t
bear to part with.
Social media and our Etsy store front
quickly helped grow the business
to a full-time job, coupled with the
opportunity to supply jackets to several
photoshoots which were featured in
blogs, the business took off faster than I
could have predicted.
Now I create around 30 plus custom
jackets each month (which doesn’t
leave much time for sleep!), I source
both vintage and brand new jackets for
customers, and work with the them to
create a design that incorporates their
wording, imagery and sentiments, so
that it’s really personal to them, and fun
to wear. Once the design brief is signed
off, it’s then chalked onto the jacket and
painted with hard wearing specialist
leather paint and finisher.
My favourite commissions are always
the old school tattoo style designs, or
cult movie artwork (although most of
my week involves custom rock n roll
wedding jackets). I often have envy
when a really kick ass piece leaves the
studio, some of them are really hard to
part with! We’ve provided jackets for
music videos, hundreds of photoshoots,
and even the odd celebrity.
I’m hoping to expand the range in the
coming months, as I have so many ideas
for other clothing product areas; luckily
my husband is a clothing designer, so
I’ll be picking his brains to make the
ideas a reality! I also need to expand
into a bigger space and find an assistant
(who doesn’t mind working the bonkers
hours and unusual projects that I do!!)
I’m still so grateful that I’ve had the
opportunity to work for myself and
run my business my way – for anyone
thinking about taking the leap to
being your own boss I would highly
recommend it, just be prepared to
work harder and longer than you
ever have! My top tips are to get all
of your ducks in a row as quickly
as possible before you start getting
busy, set procedures, order process,
suppliers social media etc in place, as
once you start it gets very hectic (I still
haven’t had time to finish my website!).
Surround yourself with people who
will staunchly support you and share
your excitement over small victories,
and prepare your friends and family to
be bored to death hearing about your
latest projects as it’s literally all you’ll
talk about for the first year!
Like most gearheads, my interest in hotrods and motorcycles began at a very early age.
My Dad’s interest in cars and bikes and Hot Wheels started it all off. Saturdays were
always race day and the basement was my domain. The quest for more speed, higher
ramps and endless lengths of bright orange track in loops and straight aways covered
the floors and fuelled the imagination. Don “The Snake” Prudhomme, Tom “Mongoose”
McEwen’s funny cars and a ‘63 Vette were my most treasured Hot Wheels cars and were
unbeatable. I still have them - 45 years later. My Hot Wheels collection was extensive
and broken into two categories: the “good” ones for looking at, and the ones for full
on, heated weekend competitions of crash and bash derbies or flat out speed and
loops of death races. All this nonsense was fuelled by Dad. He was always pushing the
limits of track engineering and even won a race or two. All those Saturdays sparked
my obsession of hotrods and eventually transitioned to the art and photography work I
create now. It is dedicated to my dad Jimmy - a hot rodder and motorcycle enthusiast in
his day, and the most unorthodox backyard mechanic I have ever known.

FEATUREDARTIST
Dad taught me about twisting wrenches, built not bought, doing it
yourself and most importantly, that “leftover parts from any repair are
just fine and were probably not needed anyway”. How we survived is still
a wonder. He let me loose on his camper truck one summer and by the
time I was done, he had the baddest truck camper in the campground.
A rumbling big block 454, chromed out, headers, Flowmasters and of
course a crushed velvet interior to top it off. Well, it was the 80’s afterall!
Anything that could come loose wasn’t safe against any performance
goodies I could swap out for, and I did. He would sport a huge grin
pulling into a campground, revving a couple extra times before finding
the “perfect spot”. The rumble would draw over all the campground
dads for a beer, some BS about his hotrodded truck camper, and to
curse out his son for the mufflers that keep falling off. Really dad...
Open headers are cool! That started me down the rabbit hole for sure.
www.pandkg.com l 37

FEATUREDARTIST
When I wasn’t under the hood playing
with motors, building trucks and bikes, I
was drawing or taking pictures of them.
High school was all about mechanics
class and art class. All us buddies cutting
class and digging into performance
tweaks on our rides every chance we
could so we would be ready for the
coveted 2am Saturday street drags at
the edge of town which would hopefully
include the bragging rights from any win
or, actually make it home under our own
power and not the dreaded rope tow.
Growing up in Canada, there was a lot of
time in the long cold winters to build in
some killer new tweaks to grab just a little
more horsepower for the big Spring roll
outs, and new bragging rights at “bullshit”
corner every weekend.
Now you would think I would have ended
up twisting wrenches for a living with all
that passion, but instead chose to go to
art school and not just once but twice. 4
years for fine art and then realizing that
food and shelter were important, back
in for another 3 years for graphic design
which has kept me fed and bought way
too many performance parts from my
graphic design business for the past 22
years. All along, still taking photos of cars
and bikes at car shows and any event I
could find something cool at.
Eventually that spawned a new company;
Dirty Monkey Kustoms. Hotrod art and
apparel. Well there you go, that is the
history. The images you are seeing here
are what turns my gears and gets me
lost for hours and hours creating. Always
tweaking and looking for that little extra
“horsepower”. Sometimes shooting
pics ol’ skool film in the Hasselblad or
digital “hit ‘n run” shooting at car shows
looking for the unique angles and curves.
Nowadays, the fun is either in mixing my
photo images with digital and traditional
drawing, or drawing up kool new T-shirt
designs to sell along with my other swag
at car shows.
One thing is for sure, I am lucky I get to
still play with the hotrods (big and small
ones), and share my art with others.
Hope you dig what you see and thanks for
hang’n out!
In this Roadside Kitchen
series, we champion oneoffs
and family-owned
eating houses with
individual and sometimes
quirky characteristics, both
in presentation and in menu.
We favour businesses which aim to offer
something a little different to add to the
interest of a road journey or a passing visit.
We avoid the predictable chains of food
outlets such as McDonalds if we can. Back
in P&KG 72 (February-March 2019) we gave
the low-down on our visit to Austin, Texas,
to check out as many of the live music
establishments as we could that might
feature a bit of rock ‘n’ roll, jive, rockin’
country and rhythm & blues music. During
our short stay in Austin, we discovered
an establishment called ‘Magnolia Cafe’.
This is at the north end of South Congress
(number 1920). It is ideally positioned for
getting a bite to eat before or after visiting
the sorts of clubs that we like, which are
gathered in an area around South Congress,
examples being The Continental Club,
As soon as you get into the Magnolia
Cafe you notice you are certainly entering
a distinctive eatery because of all the
colourful hand-painted artwork and
decorations on the walls.
Carefully observing the welcome homecooked
appearance of the meals being
enjoyed by other customers as we made
our way to a vacant table on our first
visit, Paul had already decided before
he sat down that he simply had to have
some of the Blueberry Pie! As to the
rest of the meal, we got so engrossed in
looking at the paintworks around us that
the waitress had to come back to our
table a second time to take our order!
The menu is inviting, as our photos show.
Fortunately, we found the Magnolia
on our first day in town and we used it
throughout our stay for breakfasts and
lunches as well as evening meals.
Each meal was a delight, from the
avocado dishes to the omelettes, the Mag
stir-fry, the Mag scramble, the salads,
burgers and much more. You can find the
full mouth-watering menu on the web at
café averages 4.5 out of 5 stars from over
920 reviews.
Everything seemed to be wholesome
and pleasantly affordable, such that the
enjoyment of the good food wasn’t spoilt
by the tab at the end. The Magnolia
Cafe is evidently held in high regard
because it always seemed to be doing
a great trade. Many of the folk seemed
to be locals, which is always a good
sign. They ranged from young couples
to family parties and old-timers. But
although it always seemed to be pretty
busy, the cafe was efficiently run and
the food took no time at all to arrive.
Also, we weren’t hurried or crowded
while there and we were able to study
the various leaflets of attractions which
we had picked up at our lodgings and
elsewhere and plan our days while
enjoying the food and the surroundings.
If you are ever in Austin, we are sure
the Magnolia Cafe will keep you well
fuelled to enjoy all the delights we
described in our Austin feature.
Marissa Says:
NEVER UNDERSELL YOURSELF
Part Two
TIPS:
KEEPING UP IN THE ART WORLD
Be true to yourself. Learn from others
and your own mistakes, but never be a
copycat. Find the thing you love to paint
and express yourself. People that buy
art, look for a way to connect with the
art(ist). They need to feel something
when looking at it. There are so many
ways to express yourself and so many
different tastes in art, that there is always
a market for your art, when done well.
Visit galleries and art shows to see what
people like to buy nowadays. Art is
timeless, but we do see trends! Personally
I don’t really go along with trends, but if
you want to have a higher chance of sales,
it’s a good thing to be aware of.
THERE IS
ALWAYS A
MARKET FOR
YOUR ART,
WHEN DONE
WELL.
Check out your colleagues that are on
the same level and compare prices.
Women tend to underprice with at least
50% compared to men with similar
works. So get to know yourself!
Be real. Don’t pimp your photo’s with
filters or Photoshop to get more likes on
social media. If you ever show and sell
your originals, it will come out anyway
and your career will stop before it starts.
Respect copyrights of other artists.
Provide your own reference material for
commercial artworks, don’t make exact
copies from books, other artworks or
internet pictures. This can be good for
practice when keeping things to yourself,
but it won’t get you far if you intend to
make a living with it. Another important
thing is of course the copyright itself, if
an artist misses income because you are
selling the same of his or her work, it
could come to a lawsuit.
Ask permission. If you want to practice
with someone else’s photo or artwork,
you can always ask for permission, and
then you will never have a problem when
you want to publish it.
Understand image licenses. There are
also stock photography websites where
you can buy a license to use the image,
always read which license you need, they
often offer different options.
Use references. A cool place for
reference (especially when you need
something for your own composition), is
https://www.wildlifereferencephotos.com
which is created for artists that like to
paint animals.
Step up your techniques, so that your
creative ideas can be technically executed
and supported with good techniques.
Practice makes perfect.
Schedule work time. It’s hard work to be
an artist, but the people that surround
you might not always be aware of that
and can disturb you any time of the day
because “you don’t work”. This can be the
end of an artistic career, so try to “switch
off” when working and give yourself a
time schedule as if you have a boss.
Keep your bookkeeping in order, so this
can’t give you extra stress and you keep
a good eye on incoming and outgoing
invoices. Financial stress can be a good
reason for an artist to give up, so keep
things clear from the start and work hard
to make it work.
Plan to be financially secure. If you have
a full time job, and like to make a career
switch as an artist, make sure you have
enough savings, or keep a part time job
until you are financially secure.
www.pandkg.com l 45

TIPS:
COMMISSIONED ART
Commission payments. When taking in commissions, make
sure you can handle the request and that you can work with
deadlines. Always respect the given deadline and don’t delay
work for customers. Make an agreement with your customer
and ask for a deposit. I take a 50% down payment and the other
50% at delivery. I also prefer my customer to pick a frame as
frames are very personal, due to interior and taste. It also saves
you in time and weight when shipping the artwork.
Contracts and down payments. Contracts scare people off.
Down payments are very well accepted. I only work with
contracts when companies are involved, they usually provide a
contract themselves. Make sure you read them well before you
sign anything and don’t hesitate to ask when things aren’t clear.
We aren’t lawyers and don’t always speak their language.
Working on a commission. Commissions are different from
creating your own art, but they can provide a good income as
they’re highly demanded. You do need to be able to:
• Work with a bad reference when people or animals
have passed away, and still turn it into good art.
• Be able to work with deadlines.
• Be able to make adjustments when requested.
• Work with feedback of your customer so you both
can be happy with the result.
Using commissions as promotion. You must know that you
can’t always put commissions in your resume. Some want to
keep things private. So make sure you have enough good work
on your portfolio to reel in new customers. If you don’t have
to work on an assignment, make one for yourself that you can
showcase and maybe even sell eventually. Stay busy!
Preserving your art. To protect your art from UV and dust,
you can varnish it. Golden Satin and Sennelier HC10 are my
preferred varnishes for acrylic paintings. They don’t “eat” my
white and leave no spatters around. It does make the art look
vibrant. Always let it harden for a day or 2 before wrapping.
When using a flat brush to varnish instead of spray-cans /guns,
make sure you spray a good waterproof fixative (also HC10) if
your paint is waterbased. The wet varnish on the brush will drag
off the paint when not hardened or when made wet again.
Shipping your art. Provide a good box for artwork that requires
shipping. Always check if it’s shipped insured and for how
much, in case things get lost or damaged. Use acid free paper if
you wrap your art. Protect corners and make sure it can’t move
inside the box.
A Private Commission in progress, and a
close up of it, airbrush on board. It’s been
put together from 3 different shots until the
customer liked it. Working with deadlines and
Feedback of customers is an important thing
when taking in commissions.
FEATUREDARTIST
Tim Scoggins has been an illustrator, exhibit painter,
faux finisher, mural artist, portrait artist, and most
recently turns his talent to airbrush artist.
In my early days right out of Colorado Institute of Art, I freelanced as an illustrator
using primarily, Prismacolor colored pencils. Having only a basic knowledge of how
the airbrush worked, I only tried to use it for graduated backgrounds at first.
After a couple years freelancing, I was hired as a staff artist for Copley Los Angeles
Newspapers. During my decade at the newspaper I accomplished over a 1000 pieces
of art. Everything from, small 2 inch square spot drawings, to full two page spread
illustrations for every section of the paper.
50 l P&KG Aug/Sept 19
It was during my time at the newspaper that I did a one week seminar put on by the
UCLA extension center with famed movie poster artist/illustrator Drew Struzan.
Seeing how Struzan combined the airbrush with colored pencils literally changed
my life, and as an illustrator, even more importantly, my speed. By using airbrushed
acrylics as an underpainting and the colored pencils as the detail over the top, I went
back to the newspaper after the seminar and was able to crank out more work in a
much shorter period, and start doing even more freelance work.

FEATUREDARTIST
After a decade at the newspaper I moved on to continue
freelancing and started taking on large display work for a
variety of exhibit companies. It was during this period that
I started working with larger spray guns in combination
with my airbrushes, using the spray guns to lay in big
areas, and replacing the colored pencils with the airbrush
as the detail medium.
The next step was a natural transition into mural work,
both commercial and residential. It was also around this
time that the choice had to be made between continuing
as an illustrator, and becoming a digital artist, or moving
on away from illustration and remaining old school with
physical mediums like paint and my airbrushes. For me
the decision was easy. Having experimented with digital
mediums during my time at the newspaper, I knew that
when I finished a piece of art, I wanted a physical piece of
art, not a file.
Over the last 20 plus years I have almost completely
switched over to airbrush for all of my work and continue
painting murals, large and small, and also one of my first
loves, portraits. I paint a lot of memorial portraits of
peoples loved ones, celebrity portraits at art shows and
markets, and also more elaborate “ Fine Art” portrait
series for the fun and love of it.
Like a lot of other airbrush artists, I work on any and all
kinds of projects, large and small. Helmets, cheer boxes,
t-shirts, signage, banners, shoes, luggage, cornhole
boards, literally, you name it. I’m admittedly older now,
but haven’t lost my passion for learning, or for the work,
and intend to keep on going for the rest of my life, and
hope to inspire others and keep making clients happy.
STEPBYSTEP
STEP 10
Shadows: Bloodline Deep Bruise Purple is a great shadow tone. I add
shadows and fur texture with this color on the wolf. For areas where
I want even darker shadows, add 1:1 Paynes Grey to the Purple.
This achieves darker shadows and starts to form background behind
feathers on the right side of painting.
STEP 11
Details: Begin to indicate details in the beadwork of the headdress,
using Bloodline 5045 Decay and then a Yellow or Magenta depending on
area of beads. Use Old Bone White with Decay and a drop of Bloodline
5046 Blunt Trauma Umber to add little skulls in the headpiece. You can
also use some 5036 Dermatitis Tan for a great skull color and opacity
building. Carry Tan and Blunt Trauma Umber 1:1 mix through painting to
chisel details in jewelry, necklace and mushrooms on hands.
STEP 12
In the wolf, push and pull with Deep Bruise Purple /
Grey mix mentioned before to build more texture in
wolf and shadows underneath leaves and vines. Create
depth and layers in the foreground of wolf. Add Purple
/ Grey mix to black in wolf nose and gums to make
appear more 3D (black on its own often appears flat
and less reflective).
54 l P&KG Aug/Sept 19
STEP 13
Detail out the wolf’s eyes using same steps as Step 7 to
achieve cloudy ghostly look. Use Sepia in Infectious Pink
1:1 to add shadows in both eyes. Add in small details
with Vile Green, White and Yellow 1:1:1 for moss, leaves,
vines and tribal markings above wolf eyes and brows.
Keeping this green flowing makes the whole painting
cohesive with the mossy effect and color scheme.

STEPBYSTEP
STEP 14
Use a Yellow / Moss Green / White mix even
ratio to build more leaves and vines. I then
overpower the mixture with Moss Green to
add shadows, veins and leafy texture.
STEP 15
Light source: At this point of any work,
I focus on the light source. Make sure
to keep everything on a similar plane of
light. As eluded to before, the main light
source on this piece emits from the top
left of the canvas. Having all highlights
and shadows follow this direction keeps
the image believable and realistic.
Shadow source: Use 10 drops Purple to
8 drops Umber ratio to chisel out beads
and shadows in leatherwork. I think
adding texture in the leather and bottoms
of mushrooms makes the viewer take
notice. Strengthen any shadows in wolf
and background.
STEP 16
At this point, detail teeth in wolf. I add
cracks and texture with a 1:2 Sepia / Ochre
mix. You can tint out feathers and teeth
with yellow mixture. Crisp up the necklace,
leaves and skull. Pop highlights / shadows
where necessary. Use dagger strokes to
build up remaining fur texture in wolf.‣
www.pandkg.com l 55

STEPBYSTEP
STEP 17
Almost all the details are in the moss and leaves. I have used the
Sepia / Ochre mix to chisel necklace. Overpower with Old Bone White
adding highlights in skulls, leaves and mushrooms. Use a 5048 Surgery
Sienna and 5037 Injury Ochre mixture in background to unify the
warmth in the painting. Final highlights in the wolf fur and eyes are
straight Illustration White. Add bright white textures and highlights
throughout the painting.
STEP 18
Focus on the overall piece, checking that
the lighting and shadows are consistent.
Start adding final shadows with mostly
Deep Bruise Purple and Black 1:1 in the
darkest areas and White in the brightest
highlights, maintaining the light source.
Make sure the focal point, sharpest area, is
the most acute on faces and trails off to the
side; fades out on the edges and around
the sides of the canvas for that extra effect.
STEP 19
This shows the scale of the final
painting, 4ft by 6ft in size. I like how
dynamic and bold large works are from
any distance they are viewed!!
Finally, sign your work and call it a
finished painting!
Thanks for following along, you can use
these steps to create a similar painting
or inspire you to create your own
headdress creation!!
FEATUREDARTIST
Davide Gloria AKA Maw Custom, was born in Rome
in 1989. As a child with a passion for drawing he
started at an artistic high school, where in the last
year he approached airbrushing, fascinated by the
kustom hotroad chopper and musclecars.
“For years I studied the airbrush by myself, learning
from industry gurus and reading magazines.
In 2011 I decided to expose myself with my first
contest at Rome Motodays, winning the first prize in
the custom section. Subsequently, given the difficulty
of the Italian market in 2012, I decided to move to
Australia, not knowing the language and armed with
an airbrush, in 3 months I was hired in the most
important body of Queensland Brisbane, where I
customized mega trucks and Australian v8s for a
year. Then I came back to Italy where, thanks also to
the expanded curriculum in Australia, becoming part
of a KP Familla crew composed of elites of the Italian
sector, where I could compare and grow artistically.
At the same time I also started the tattoo company
where I attended the most important conventions
in the country for 3 years. In doing so, I opened my
artistic horizons, which proved to be of fundamental
importance in the development of my style in
airbrushing.
In 2017 I moved to Sanremo, north Italy, where I
run a tattoo shop working with the airbrush at the
same time, to such a point to perfectly blend the
techniques and styles.
In 2018 I returned to Rome where I decide to focus
exclusively in the technique that I love, airbrushing.”
Do our eyes play
tricks on us?
I cannot speak for everyone, but yes they do. We at times airbrush black and white
artworks only to find that it’s either too dark or too light, and for no good reason.
So why does this happen?? The simple answer is that our eyes thought it would be
funny to play a joke on our brain…ha ha very funny. But the real answer is that we
were tricked into believing that we had the right tonal value, but didn’t. We teach this
to our unit 2 students and when they go through these exercises it makes a massive
difference to the tonal values used on their artworks.
So read on… Find how and why this happens.
Which colour/tone we see isn’t just a matter of the light coming
into eyes, it’s also the effects that caused that idea, for example,
light and dark. We use the setting around us to gain information
for our colour/tonal experiences. Some people see just what’s in
front of them and some people are affected much more by the
environment around the artwork itself.
Take the following graphic by Edward H Adelson. Squares A and
B appear to be different shades of Grey. Cover the surrounding
squares and you’ll see how at times our eyes play tricks on us.
Checker Shadow Description
Now for the technical stuff…Read through this (If you are an
insomniac this is the cure) and do the exercises, as this will show
why the information is so important, especially if you want to be
accurate in your airbrushing.
In this case the problem is to determine the tonal value of the
grey in the checks. Just measuring the light coming from a
surface is not enough: a cast shadow will dim a surface, so that
a white surface in shadow may be reflecting less light than a
black surface in full light.
In simpler terms that means:
In shadow or not, a check that is lighter than its neighbouring
checks is probably lighter than average, and vice versa. In the
picture, the light check in shadow is surrounded by darker
checks. Even though the check is physically dark, it is light
when compared to its neighbours. The dark checks outside the
shadow, conversely, are surrounded by lighter checks, so they
look dark by comparison.
Then we have the gradual changes in light level, so that it can
determine the grey value of the surfaces without being misled
by shadows. In this graphic, the shadow looks like a shadow.
And the reason? Because of the soft edges and also the shadow
cast from the cylinder, understood as changes in surface tone
rather than in terms of shadows or lighting. Still awake??
The important task is to break the
image information down into meaningful
sections, and thereby identify the type
of the objects in view. Helping us to
distinguish grey scale
or tonal values in
our artworks.
“THE WHITE CHECKS
WILL BE DARKER IN
THE SHADOW AREAS.”
www.pandkg.com l 63

Cut out a mask
By viewing patches of the squares without the
surrounding framework, you can remove the effect of
the illusion. Trace out the squares “A” & “B” and the
check the difference in Tonal Value. Surprised? In Unit 1
of the Airbrush course taught by Airicons you learn the
importance of focal values and in Unit 2 we work heavily
on tonal values. This exercise shows the importance of
making sure that your tonal values are accurate as well.
Simultaneous Contrast Illusion
Consisting of two bars one with a gradient dark to light and the
middle bar is painted evenly throughout. However its perception
is affected by the gradient scale distribution of the colour in the
background. The illusion is noticeable even for small ranges of
the background grey and almost independently of the relative
shape of the bar(s).
This exercise shows again that our eyes can and will be tricked
when we mix light and dark tones. As the bar is a solid mid
grey...it is the background that is a gradation and so gives the
thought that the bar is also gradated.
Both of these graphics prove the need for colour swatches or
in this case a grey scale swatch so as to be accurate in your
tonal values.
KEEPING AN EYE ON THE WORLD OF AIRBRUSH
By airbrush artist Svee Wheeler, email: svee@sveeart.com
Hi there you lovely readers you! Svee here. If you have a
topic or product you would like to discuss/review/know more
about or have questions on, give myself and the P&KG crew
a shout and we’ll see what we can do for you.
Sparmax Flyer SR
Airbrush Review
Sparmax Flyer Specifications:
• Nozzle size: 0.4mm
• Plastic bottle size: 15cc (PETG – NOT
solvent resistant)
• Glass bottles available for solvent use
• Standard 1/8 PS air hose fitting
• Simple to use
• Light weight (75g with bottle)
• Ergonomic PC handle
• Adjustable line width
• No disassembly of airbrush
• Can be used with Sparmax’s smallest
compressors, DC-25/DC-25X
With the aid of extra bottle/bottle sets sold
separately:
• Swift swapping of colours
• No cleaning between colour change
The Flyer is available in two different types.
The regular “Flyer” and the “Flyer SR”. The
regular version comes with a plastic bottle made
of PETG so it’s not something you want to be
putting solvents into. If you are just a waterbased
sprayer it’ll be perfect but if you want to
spray solvent based paints then you need to go
with the version we have been sent, the Flyer SR.
This comes with a solvent resistant glass bottle
rather than the plastic one.
The lovely people at Sparmax have
sent us something a little different for
review. The Flyer SR airbrush. This isn’t
your typical airbrush though as it uses a
quick release bottle system rather than
a traditional paint cup attached to the
brush so rather than having to clean out
your paint cup every time you want to
change colours, you just grab a bottle
with the correct colour in and plug it into
the airbrush. Here’s the tech stuff….
66 l P&KG Aug/Sept 19

Straight out of the box you get the airbrush itself, an instruction
manual and a handy little plastic cradle for the Flyer to sit in
when not in use. The airbrush itself has a very comfortable
design. It sits nicely in your hand, is lightweight and feels
comfortable. You’ll notice the Flyer is more of a single action
design, there is a large trigger on the handle that turns the air on
and off but the paint flow is controlled by how much you have
the paint bottle screwed into the cap. One thing to note, when
changing colours make sure the bottle is screwed in all the way
to the closed position otherwise you’ll be leaving the nozzle on
the top of the bottle open and your paint could dry out a bit
over time.
The actual process of changing paint bottles is incredibly
easy. You just pull the current bottle out of the airbrush in a
backwards direction (after making sure you’ve screwed the
bottle to the closed position to stop your paint from drying out)
and insert the next one. Easy as that.
In use, the Flyer is a very easy tool to get along with. It’s worth
noting that with it’s 0.4mm nozzle, it is more suited to general
airbrushing over large areas. Don’t go buying this expecting
to pull off insanely detailed works of art and tiny details that
you would expect to see from the higher priced dual action
airbrushes with 0.15 or 0.2mm nozzle set ups. I did find whilst
using it, the bottles suffer from tip dry when using water-based
paints. Of course, all airbrushes suffer from this, its just part
of the game when using water-based paints. The only problem
here is that the nozzle is part of the bottle so you need to
remove the bottle and unscrew the nozzle from the top of it to
clear the blockage. Sometimes you could just open it up fully
and blast the blockage out of there but I did find clearing the
clogs from tip dry rather a pain at times. It’s by no means a deal
breaker but I do feel it’s worth mentioning that you will need to
stop to clean the bottle now and then when using water-based
mediums.
What’s really useful with this system
is that the paint side of things is all
taken care of in the bottle.
None of it ever touches the rest of the airbrush so colour
changes are instant with no intermixing. If you’ve been spraying
black and you plug in a bottle of white, you can rest assured that
the first squirt of paint to come out will be pure white. There will
be no residue left over from the previous colour to get mixed in
with the new one.
In conclusion, the Sparmax Flyer SR is a bit of an odd looker
at first but upon using it you soon realise that this is a quite
capable little tool as far as general airbrushing goes.
It is very easy to use and the paint
changes can be done in seconds which
depending on what you are doing,
can be invaluable. It would be a very
handy piece of equipment to have
in anyone’s arsenal from beginner
airbrusher to advanced.
Although it isn’t really suited to the more finer spraying and
detailed artwork, the Flyer is amazing at basecoats, primer and
spraying a smooth, even finish over larger areas quickly and
hassle free for very little cost.
STEPBYSTEP
DRAGON AX
Step by Step
(Part 1 of 2)
The “FBS Dragon Ax” project was
designed exclusive for the FBS Custom
Tapes & Sprayers Co. This piece was
unveil along with many other beautiful
art pieces from well known artist at the
FBS booth at the SEMA SHOW 2018
event in Las Vegas, Nevada. USA.
It was a true challenge since many well known artist will participate
in this event, and I know I must do something special for the event,
FBS create and distribute high quality custom tape for artists and
custom painters, I decide to design a coat of arms that represent
the brand, so I start creating concepts and sketches with a coat of
arms shield in mind and with an Ax where the blades will be the
wings of the dragon, and part of his body turned in to a custom
tape with a few different rolls of tape around the handle which end
on a spear! My idea is to create a powerful design, with a medieval
theme with a touch of Fantasy!
STEP 1
The concept of this project has being created digitally using
Adobe Photoshop, this design is based on an Ax design, which
have the shape of a dragon with the wings as the blades of the
Ax, the handle is a spear stick surrounded by a roll of adhesive
tape similar to the speciality tapes manufactured by FBS, in the
lower part of the handle a spearhead is formed with a blades
which contains the logo of the company FBS.
www.pandkg.com l 69

STEPBYSTEP
STEP 2
Once the overall shape of the
Ax has been vectored, I sent the
digital file of the silhouette of
the dragon and the coat of arms
shield to my talented friend
Troy Eliot, who cut to size the
shape of the dragon on a sheet
of metal, as well as the shield
shape and the frame of it.
STEP 3
As you can see Troy
Eliot did a great job
cutting the shapes
of the dragon and
the shield, these
pieces have been cut
separately and the
shield shape have
been ground to give
a special effect of
texture and reflection.
STEP 4 & 5
Troy sent me the shape of the dragon already cut, to prepare it,
I gave it a black base applying Auto Born Sealer from Createx
Colors, to giving an even base color first.
STEP 6
Once the color black has been applied, I applied
Auto Born Sealer White as a base color before
applying the coats of Auto Air metallic white fine and
coarse finish to give more reflection when applying
the Candy color over the white metallic base.
STEP 7 & 8
Now I proceed to prepare the
image of the dragon that I will
transfer that has been printed
on sheets of good quality paper,
the silhouette of the Dragon
Ax has been cut manually with
the help of a rotating knife to
facilitate the cutting of it.
Note: I make sure that the shape
of the dragon corresponds
exactly to the shape of the
silhouette of the Ax.
70 l P&KG Aug/Sept 19

STEPBYSTEP
STEP 9 & 10
Once the painted metal shape of the
dragon has been protected with 4030
Balancing Clear from Createx, it is
ready to be mask. As you can see,
the entire silhouette of the Ax has
been covered with Gold Mask and it is
ready to be cut.
STEP 11
With the help of a sharp blade
I cut around the metal shape of
the dragon, which was visible
through the translucent paper
of the FBS Gold Mask.
STEP 12, 13 & 14
To transferred the main
lines of the dragon and
the rest of the design, I
use Saral transfer paper
in graphite color, placing
it between the printed
copy and the masked
area, then I transferred
the main lines of the
whole design, the lines
must be very easy to
read to simplify to
cutting of the mask.
www.pandkg.com l 71

STEPBYSTEP
STEP 15 & 16
I make sure to delineate with
a fine marker the cutting lines,
with the help of a professional
swivel knife (an old brand
Xacto model 3051) I can follow
without problems the marked
lines and make all the detailed
cuts, likewise I use an Olfa
compass circle cutter to cut the
concentric circumferences of
the FBS logo.
STEP 17
Having all the sections cut, I
carefully remove the areas that
must be painted in Silver color
Like the Ax blades (edges of
the dragon wings, and also the
edges in the lower part of the
spearhead in the lower part
of the handle using Createx
Metallic Silver and applying it
with my Anest-Iwata LPH-50
spray gun.
STEP 18
With the blades sections
painted in Silver color, I start
to detailing the edges by
airbrushing some cracked
lines an bevel borders with
a reduced Black Illustration
color to give the effect of an
old metallic blade.
Note: It is very important
that all the colors used over
the metallic white base, are
only Candy 2O colors, unless
some illustration colors are
indicated, this way the metallic
base can be seeing through the
transparency of the candies.
STEP 19 & 20
Now I removed the mask from
the areas that correspond to
the lower part of the handle,
where the FBS logo is located.
Using Candy 2O colors I start
painting with Marine Blue,
and accents with Cobalt Blue
Illustration color the contours
of the shapes and the filigree
inside the spear, with the help
of my Texture FX templates
from Artool, I managed to give
a special stone-like finish. The
contrast between the colors of
the logo and the Silver color
that surrounds this part of the
handle give a very interesting
touch to the tip of spear.
Follow the next part of Gerald’s
superb step by step in Issue 76.
I have a photographic approach in my paintings by
composing and placing highly detailed parts of the motif
in focus - and others to fade out in blur. To achieve this
effect, I blend traditional media and brush strokes with
freehand Airbrush techniques.
To master and develop the creative craftsmanship and
precision is an essential part of painting for me. My goal is
to achieve photorealism and then go beyond, adding my
personal touch. With a passion for portraiture, I am drawn
to creating art that is realistic but also providing a gateway
into the subject’s soul... I use eyes as a channel.
To me painting is also play, relaxation and recreation.
Iwata Eclipse
HP-CS
Airbrush Review
Although the Iwata HP-CS isn’t a new
product to the airbrushing market, it is
still one of the most popular airbrushes
out there today. Its large paint cup
makes it ideal for larger areas without
having to keep stopping to refill and the
Eclipse ranges unique removable nozzle
makes them a doddle to clean quickly
and easily. Before we get too far into it
though, here’s the tech specs...
Airbrush Specifications:
• A 0.35mm needle and drop-in self-centering nozzle.
• Generous 1/3 oz sized paint cup designed with funnel shape
making for easier cleanups and more efficient paint flow.
• Capable of spraying heavier acrylics and Medea Textile
Colors, while maintaining high levels of detail.
• Single cut-away handle.
• Spray pattern – hairline to 2” (50-mm) round.
• Optimal Working Pressure of 25-35psi.
• Easy, compression fit nozzle.
• Gravity Fed.
• Dual action trigger.
• Internal mix.
• 10 year warranty
www.pandkg.com l 81

The airbrush comes well packaged in a nice
sturdy box and comes with the usual spanner
for taking the airbrush apart and a small tub
of superlube for ensuring the needle glides
effortlessly with each movement of the trigger.
You also get a spray test sheet, instruction
booklet and an Iwata sticker!
The airbrush itself is in a high quality chrome finish. It weighs in
at 0.25 lbs (0.11kg) so it feels robust and solid but isn’t heavy
enough to cause your hand/wrist to
suffer from fatigue easily. It
feels well balanced and
comfortable to hold.
As mentioned above,
the HP-CS comes with
a 0.35mm nozzle and needle setup. This enables you to spray
a wide range of paints and get some real fine details. If you
would rather have a larger spray pattern or wish to use thicker
pigments though, you can easily purchase a 0.50 set up that fits
straight in with very little fuss.
Any airbrusher will tell you, 99% of the problems you will
encounter when spraying come from cleaning. It is very easy
to get a small bit of paint stuck in your nozzle which will cause
you no end of problems until it is cleaned out. This is where
the Eclipse series of airbrushes come into play. They feature a
“push-in” nozzle rather than a screw one. This means should
you need to get access to the inside of the nozzle for cleaning it
takes just seconds to unscrew the end cap and just pull off the
nozzle. Of course, be careful not to bend the end of the needle
when doing so but it really is as simple as that. No messing
around with different size spanners or having a nozzle that is so
tiny its easily lost.
In conclusion, the Iwata HP-
CS is a real work horse of an
airbrush. Capable of spraying
a huge range of material with
great results and the possibility
of getting some very fine
details. If looked after, this
airbrush will quite literally last
you years and produce some
amazing work.
The Iwata HP-CS is available
ADVERTORIAL
Iremember back in 2000 when I decided to make painting
my final career. Although I’ve been painting for what seems
my entire life, I had the opportunity after my career in the
forces, to learn to paint properly. The military at the time
provided funding for service personnel such as myself,
to attend training courses to help prepare us for civilian
life. Having always been interested in the painting industry, I
was looking to go on a course that taught me everything there
was to know about custom and conventional paintwork. To my
disbelief however, I couldn’t initially find anything I was looking
for. Smart Repairs, airbrushing or college were my only options.
I was serving in Northern Ireland at the time when I had
the opportunity to attend a one day’s beginner’s course in
airbrushing with the legendary Simon Murray. This ignited my
interest for airbrushing, however I soon realized I needed to
perfect much more than just this. I wasn’t prepared to sit in
college for 3 years at this stage of my life so the only other
option I had was to undergo a smart repair course.
This was a bad idea as I felt I didn’t learn anything useful and
didn’t quite get the concept of cutting corners or to bodge a
repair didn’t sit well with me, thankfully I wasn’t paying for it
myself. I’m sure nowadays the concept of this training has more
than likely been refined, but the basic principles I’m sure are the
same. Time had run out so I started with what I had. Back then
there was no YouTube or the like and painters are protective of
their knowledge, so head first I went for the next 2 to 3 years,
taking on anything and everything I could to make a living. You
name it, from airbrushing and painting helmets and bikes in my
garage to mobile full resprays and repairs on peoples driveways.
Working around the clock, making big mistakes and achieving
great success. Although those were hard times I wouldn’t want
to repeat, I look at them with fondness because they were the
building blocks of what got me to where I am today.
Today I run a comprehensive training facility and like to think I’ve
developed the best painting and custom course on the planet. A bold
statement? I believe it is, but one I would stand by when you look at
value for money and the results I achieve in a small time scale.
I like to think I take a different approach to my courses and
teaching. There are lots of variables within the disciplines of
repairs, painting and airbrushing and they all need to come
together at the right time, in the right sequence to make a job turn
out well. I believe knowing the fundamentals of everything about
the surface you’re working on, or, the products you apply, leads to
the success of any job.
For example, take the photos of the student’s final projects
you see here in this article and the photos in our gallery on our
website. On our Full 11 day course, the custom paint work you see
is done over a two and a half day period. From the primer stage
through design, paint work and the two lacquer processes up to a
highly polished finish. It’s a misconception that these projects are
done over the full length of the course, they are not. So I have the
remaining 7 days to teach you to repair heavy damage, airbrush
and paint in order to achieve these results at a day to day price
that still beats even the most basic training courses. If you know of
any other course that can compete at this level please let me know
and I’ll give you my course for free! So, I stand by my statement.
If only I could have found what I teach
now, it would have saved me so much
time and money. So with that in mind
and years of teaching experience I
looked at what was on offer and set out
to provide something different. So in
2006 I wrote my first course.
ADVERTORIAL
There are three aspects to my business life:
• Paint my Ride
• The Auto Paint Training Centre
• My brand new addition Micmans,
automotive paint supplies.
I have used the name Paint my Ride since 2002 which was
before the TV show that came along and stole my thunder, but
its OK, I’m sure it’s helped me in one way or another. Paint My
Ride is a fully equipped body shop and we don’t just teach, we
undertake jobs ranging for your typical bumper scuff to panel
fabrication and welding on both cars and bikes including custom
paint designs. At the moment we are focusing more on the
classic car restorations but there isn’t a great deal we can’t take
on. We don’t just teach it, we do it, because we can, so if we’re
not running a course we are head first in our latest project.
The training centre side of paint my ride currently provides 3
structured courses:
• 11 day conventional and custom paint and repairs.
• 5 days conventional prep, repair and paint
• 3 day airbrush package
We also provide a 5 day 1-to-1 package and we are in the
process of developing a 5 and 10 day welding and restoration
course to include metal shaping to be launched towards the end
of the year.‣
ADVERTORIAL
Due to all of the finer aspects of what we teach we steer away
from set standard procedures. Set procedures may work for one
thing but wont for hundreds of others. Everything from your
paint, repair or airbrushing is different on the multiple scenarios
you could face , there are hundreds of ways metal reacts to
a dent, hundreds of different paints and application methods
on all angles. Custom paint is one thing on a flat board, quite
another on a curved surface. We teach the feel and the visual
aspect on everything so the students feel in control of what they
do; not just hoping it turns out right. This is achieved by staying
away from overpriced equipment and going back to old school
hand skills. Students tend to find it beneficial to train in a real
time working environment and if the opportunity arises they
often observe and get involved in ongoing projects.
A lot of my time on the phone to ex-students is solving product
issues and it can be frustrating to relate to their products used
as in most cases I don’t use myself. We are in a sell sell market
with a vast amount of products on offer which can even confuse
me, so with my business partner Jennifer we have just opened
our new venture MICMANS paint suppliers. Like our training
we’ll be approaching this from a different angle, but that’s our
next story.
Look forward to finding out more about Micmans paint supplies
in our next issue.
I guess the real training starts after the course. I can only teach
so much in the time I have so me and the other instructors are
always available for support and guidance when needed and
enjoy seeing the skills taught put to good use.
Ibegan illustrating in the early 90s,
creating posters, record sleeves, T-Shirts,
flyers and merchandise for Sheffield’s
notorious nightclub The Leadmill, and
consequently for clubs, record labels and
theatres around the world.
For a few years I took jobs in video games and feature
animation before going freelance, working on storyboards and
corporate projects.
Designs for Iron Sphincter – The Zombie Band led to drawing
zombie caricatures at horror conventions, tattoo shows and
burlesque nights, where I started getting commissions for
merchandise artwork.
I first encountered kustom cars in the 90s rockabilly scene,
where car parks at gigs and festivals were as big a draw as the
music. I had no knowledge of cars (and still don’t!) but was
besotted by the design, shape and detail. And then I saw the
art, paintwork and pinstriping and was blown away.
Rendering primarily in black and white I use dip pens and
brushes, in a style influenced by my love of old comic books.
My reference folders are full of all things vintage- horror
comics, film posters, toy packaging and silent era movie stars.
Inspiration comes from the psychotronic and golden age- hot
rods, Zoltar machines, X-Ray specs, atomic movie monsters,
grindhouse cinema and Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes!
Whilst drawing I usually listen to music, all different stuff, from
rockabilly to punk to space rock, psychedelic to jazz to film
soundtracks and molten metal.
Recently I’ve been lucky enough to merchandise for Whitby
Kustom and Burlesque Noir- events that I love attending. I
met legendary burly performer Satan’s Angel at a festival
dedicated to her legacy, and (aside from falling head over
heels) created official Angel prints. She performed, for the
very last time, her signature Flaming Tassels routine, and
life will never be the same!
In 2017 my work was featured in Clive Barker's Hellraiser
Anthology, a deluxe hardcover book published by Barker's
own Seraphim Inc. I'm a huge fan of his books, so that was
a real high point. I was sent a few complimentary copies
and, weeks later, a friend was flipping through one book
and pointed out that it had been signed by Clive himself!
I’d love to get more gigs designing posters and merch for
kustom shows and other subculture/alternative events.
Being an active part of these scenes is the best, and
meeting people into the same stuff really inspires me to
continue. Often I’ll bump into folks at punk gigs or burly
nights or horror cons that I’ve previously met at bike shows
and rockabilly weekenders and kustom shows- there’s a big
crossover, the common denominator being that everybody’s
super cool.
I co-run the Astro Diablo brand and sell online through our
Etsy shop. We stock a broad range of our own alternative
greeting cards, T-shirts, prints, pomade, tote bags, tea
towels and more! Moving forward we hope to sell hoodies,
skateboards, badges, sneakers and anything we can print
on. All screen-printing is handled in house from our secret
Sheffield bunker, housed deep beneath a treacherous
mountain and guarded by Lost World dinosaurs.
