CELEBRATING YOUNG SCIENTISTS DURING YOUTH MONTH
Murendeni Lalamani Veterinary Nurse
Murendeni’s job highlights
• Caring for and looking after sick zoo animals and seeing them
make a significant recovery.
• The excitement of learning new techniques and working with a
variety of captive animal species.
Murendeni’s passion for caring for his pet while he was young fuelled
his ambition to make a contribution in covering the gap of lack of
qualified veterinary nursing professionals in the country. He holds a
veterinary nursing diploma from the University of Pretoria, which he
completed in 2014.
Murendeni has had an exciting four years and three months of working
as a veterinary nurse in the Research & Scientific Services Department
at the National Zoological Garden, Pretoria.
Murendeni’s day to day work with his team focuses mostly on animal
health checks, marking of new-borns, checking the pharmacy
inventory and game capture. He also gets to spend time in a wellequipped
clinical pathology lab.
Zwelakhe Zondi Scientific Authority Technician
Zwelakhe’s job highlights
• Attending the CITES CoP16 which was hosted by South Africa.
Zwelakhe’s favourite school subject was natural science. His interest
in nature was also inspired from watching National Geographic
programmes. Seeing researchers out in the wild working with plants
and animals affirmed his passion for this field. Furthermore, Zwelakhe’s
desire to follow a different career path from what his peers wanted
motivated him to pursue studies in the field of zoology. He holds a
B.Sc. in zoology and an honours degree.
Zwelakhe has been working in the natural science field for six
years. He is currently working as a scientific authority technician
in the Biodiversity Assessment and Monitoring Directorate and is
based at the National Herbarium in the Pretoria National Botanical
Garden. His job entails extracting and analysing the Convention on
International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora
(CITES) trade data, which is used to prioritise species in trade that are
of conservation concern. Zwelakhe conducts cycad nursery audits for
CITES registration. He endorsed and developed Cynthia Giddy’s wild
cycad characteristics which can be used to help distinguish between
wild or artificially propagated cycads.
Get your adrenalin pumping!
Two young girls on their gap year go missing in
Thailand; their families frantic, desperate and
thrust into the international spotlight. A journalist
wants to be first with the story, but keeps thinking
of her own travelling son whom she hasn’t seen
for two years. We raced through Fiona Barton’s
The Suspect ... it’s gripping and full of twists to
keep you guessing. Couldn’t put it down! Penguin,
R290 • One death might be an accident. Two look
like murder. A detective investigating the shooting
of a man by his pregnant wife recognises her as
the same woman who, apparently accidentally,
shot her father 16 years before. Now she must find
out if the woman has twice been a victim, or if
she’s about to, once again, get away with murder.
Never Tell by Lisa Gardner is all twists, turns and a
thrilling read. Penguin, R290
The Taking of Annie Thorne by CJ Tudor
(The Chalk Man) is not an enjoyable read.
But it’s one you won’t be able to put down.
It’s the dark tale of Joe Thorn, a troubled
man who returns to his home town ... a
town where once, years ago, his sister went
missing for two days and then came back.
But although no one could put their finger
on it, something was just wrong with little
Annie. A twist which will give you shivers at
the end! Penguin, R290 • In Out of the Dark,
Gregg Hurwitz has the incredible Orphan X,
Evan Smoak, working out how to kill the
president of the USA. This is the fourth
Orphan X novel ... once again a fast-paced,
edge-of-your-seat, brilliant read. Penguin,
R290 • Saints and Sinners is a rather macabre
theme for a wedding ... even more so when
a young woman is found murdered. With
no means of identification and with all
guests denying knowing her, psychologist
Alex Delaware and LAPD Lieutenant Milo
Sturgis have to question hundreds of guests
to find out who the victim is and why she
was murdered. In Jonathan Kellerman’s
The Wedding Guest, the reception’s over, and
the hunt for a killer is on! Century, R270
PROMOTION
Kalahari
This month’s focus ... sensitive and sensitised skin
Did you know that approximately 50 per cent of clients believe they
suffer from sensitive skin? In fact, what they’re really experiencing
is sensitised skin! Truly sensitive skin is usually genetically inherited
and tends to be more prominent in younger skin. Due to the higher
histamine levels in the body, sensitive skin can be more susceptible to
inflammatory conditions, like psoriasis, rosacea, and eczema. For this
particular skin type, the slightest irritation or provocation can cause
a flare up as a result of allergies, pollution, chemical irritants, illness,
extreme temperatures, and other undesirable external conditions.
On the other hand, sensitised skin – also known as ‘reactive skin’ – is
usually self-induced. This type of skin irritation can occur due to
pre-existing conditions which have gone undiagnosed or untreated
such as acne, rosacea, atopic dermatitis and certain food allergies.
The use of harsh chemical cosmetics, make-up, medicine, hormones
and too many professional treatments which strip the skin’s natural
hydrolipid barrier, are all major contributing factors. When allergens
come into contact with intolerant skin, the body issues a full-blown
immune response, releasing antibodies to attack the offending
substance, resulting in visible reddening and inflammation.
JUNE FOCUS
Kalahari treatment of the
month ... The Honeybush
skin treatment
The natural plant extracts found in our
Honeybush Skin Treatment include rooibos
tea, shea butter and Kigelia africana
which will instantly soothe, hydrate and
moisturise sensitised skin, without causing
any further irritation. Not only is this a
deeply nourishing treatment, but it is also
the ideal phase 1 treatment with which
to start your Kalahari Skincare journey.
A trained Kalahari therapist will use this
time to thoroughly assess your skin,
design an effective treatment strategy and
recommend homecare products specifically
suited to address your skin concerns.
Kalahari product of the month ...
Phytoflora Serum
When treating sensitive and sensitised skin
conditions, controlling the skin’s natural flora balance
is an important component in preventing a reaction.
Our Phytoflora Serum contains a combination of
Phyto-effective ingredients such as probiotics,
nasturtium flower extract, red algae and
malachite stone extract which maintain and
balance the skin’s natural microbes. Further
benefits of this serum include: radically
improving the skin’s complex defence system
and barrier function; cell oxygenation;
protection against environmental pollutants
and the overall prevention of cell-ageing. R252.
own power couple. Business partners and parents to two little girls, the Osmans make
juggling business and family look easy. We wanted to know just how they do it.
Born and raised in Pretoria,
Shaaista and Osman Osman
both called Laudium home
for many years before finally
settling down in Centurion.
Osman attended Central Islamic School
in Laudium and Shaaista the Pretoria
Muslim School. And although they both
called Laudium home at the time, the
dynamic duo’s paths would only cross
years later.
“I think I was about six or seven years
old when Bollywood shows were allowed
to come back into South Africa after
apartheid ended and a friend of my father
organised a show with Amitabh Bachchan
at the Sharks Rugby Stadium.
“While standing in line to go in, I saw
everyone waiting to greet the gentleman
who had organised the show. He had a
walkie-talkie in his hand and it was at that
point that I wanted to be the guy with the
walkie-talkie and not the guy on the stage.
I guess I am blessed and fortunate to be
living my dream today,” Osman explains
his passion for events management.
Little did he know then that his now
wife, Shaaista, also had big dreams of one
day owning her own events company.
When she was just 18 years old, she
started a company called Paragon
Generation, which focused on the
upliftment and development of skills
education for everyone from minors all the
way to tertiary level.
“I organised a lot of small events before
moving onto more private and corporate
events,” the bubbly businesswoman says.
In 2004, she started Regalo Ed Fragranza,
one of the countries’ first online fragrance
stores. She was importing from Paris and
London as well as all over the world, and in
2009 Blu Blood came into existence.
Blu Blood is a lifestyle and
communications company specialising in
live events and entertainment throughout
Africa.
They are the leading producers of
Bollywood events on the continent and
on the local comedy front they own the
brand Kings & Queens of Comedy, which
tours throughout South Africa and plays
to sold-out audiences.
“We also have a public relations and
communications arm that handles crisis
management as well as PR, corporate
profiling, artist management, a digital
media agency and a print and design
house, ” Osman explains.
Although the couple grew up in the
same community of Laudium, they never
met until one day when they both used
the services of the same graphic designer.
Osman was organising one of his first
events, the Laudium Community Bizarre
and Shaaista needed some design work
done for her Mama Africa campaign for
Childline.
“Shaaista demanded to be helped first
and I decide to strike up a conversation
– without any response. She was so
beautiful ... but so out of my league! I did,
however, get her phone number and a
beautiful friendship soon started,” Osman
fondly remembers their first encounter.
“I can’t say that it was love at first
sight, but it’s been the most amazing
relationship that I have ever had, and it
grew so strong and so deep that our love
runs ever deep to this day. It’s a love that
humbles and grounds us,” Shaaista adds.
As if written in the stars, the couple soon
after merged their lives and businesses,
building it into the success story it is today.
“Being the good husband that I am,
I decided to relinquish my brand and melt
my company into Shaaista’s company Blu
Blood. Well, it was that and the fact that
she had the better logo,” Osman jokes.
So who does what? And how difficult is it
really working so closely with a spouse?
“Shaaista is very good with proposals;
she is the one who comes up with all these
crazy ideas. I’m the person that makes
it happen, I’m the deal maker. I turn her
crazy ideas into reality,”
Working together so closely, it also helps
if your spouse is your best friend.
“You have to share the same vision and
ambition and have the same goals to
make things happen. Shaaista and I both
know where we want to be and what we
want for our brand and company. One
difficult thing, however, is learning when
to switch off and keep a positive point
of view even during conflict times. For
example, if you’re in the dog box at home,
you’re business partner cannot give you
the silent treatment at the office,” Osman
explains. “You can’t take your work into
the bedroom and you can’t take your
bedroom into the workplace. That being
said, Osman is an amazing individual and
a real force of nature to work with. He
pushes my boundaries and I push him
too, but at the same time, we ground
each other and that is an important asset,”
Shaaista adds.
“Call it the yin to my yang, north to
south, east to west, day to night – I would
not want to work with anyone else but
him, and I am so privileged and honoured
to do so every day of my life.”
When the couple isn’t working, they like
to relax at home with their two daughters,
aged seven months and five years, and
catch up on their favourite series.
“It sounds very simplistic but in the
hectic, crazy lifestyle that we lead, we find
great solace and great pleasure in just
relaxing which we don’t get a lot of during
the week,” Shaaista says. Family means
everything to the Osmans and somehow
they make juggling family life and work
look easy.
For the love of
writing
Joan Hettema is no stranger in literary circles and has honed her writing skills over the
years working in all aspects of the craft. Now, after a process of 13 years she’s published
her book, Jacaranda Rain - A South African story and we wanted to find out more about
this interesting local writer.
Joan Hettema’s passion for reading
and books began with her father
reading her fairy tales, long before
she could even read herself. This
special relationship with the written word
kickstarted a career in writing spanning
several decades
She has dabbled in journalism, written
text for theatre programmes, worked
on articles on scientific research and
was a lecturer and judge for a national
publication forum. These days she edits
dissertations and other writing.
“I love language as it reflects the
workings of the human mind and heart.
It has such variety and can express every
nuance of thought and feeling,” says Joan,
who attended Brooklyn Primary before
matriculating at Pretoria High School for
Girls.
She even worked as a newspaper
journalist for The Pretoria News, a career
that she says completely started by
chance.
“I knew the journalists who worked as
theatre critics for the newspaper and
went to show them my baby son after
he was born. They then told me that the
newspaper was looking for a copy typist.
“In those days, there were no cellphones,
e-mails and so forth and the court
reporter had to phone in the text of the
story to the copy typist.
“After a few months, the news editor
said there was a vacancy for a reporter
and asked if I would be interested.
“I had worked for SA Panorama, a
monthly glossy depicting the best
of South Africa and published by the
SA Information Services, as well as
SA Digest, a weekly newsletter for the
same department, so it was just a matter
of adjusting to more stringent deadlines,”
Joan explains.
The Pretorian is a self-confessed
bookworm and holds multiple
qualifications: a degree from the
University of Pretoria majoring in English
and Latin, a BA (Hons) English Language
and Literature from Unisa and Troisième
Degré from the Alliance Francaise.
“This is quite simply an enduring
curiosity and desire to know about
everything possible. But true knowledge
goes much deeper than book learning.
Each person has to find the core
themselves,” Joan adds.
You might recognise her surname as
apart from her own accolades, Joan’s
husband was the late Jan Hettema,
Springbok Olympic Cyclist and Springbok
Rally Champion and her daughter is
acclaimed singer, Helena Hettema.
The Muckleneuk resident recently
finished her book Jacaranda Rain: A
South African Story. It is a tale within a
tale and tells a personal story against
the backdrop of the purple blooms of
Pretoria renowned for its jacaranda trees.
Spanning seven decades, the mood and
atmosphere of South Africa come to life
– from the time of the Second World War
under the leadership of Jan Smuts – to
more than 40 years of National Party rule
and Nelson Mandela’s release after 27
years of imprisonment and becoming
president of the “Rainbow Nation” in 1994;
and finally, a new era with the ascendancy
of Cyril Ramaphosa in 2018. “The idea of
the book just came to me and unfolded
as I went along. Essentially it was done
in a few months, but then the tidyingup
process – taking out some bits and
adding others – took another few years,”
Joan explained the process.
All events in the book really happened,
as seen through her eyes. Some names
have been changed, but she tried to
depict the mood of the various decades
and the mores that motivate people.
All in all, the book took 13 years to
complete and you can get your copy at
Uppercase Books at Menlyn Maine and
Protea Books in Hatfield. It is also available
on Amazon and on Kindle as an e-book.
Any advice for up-and-coming writers
hoping to pin down their story in book
form? “If you have an idea just sit down
and start writing. When the time is right
it will simply flow out of you. The inner
dialogue and self-doubt can hold one
up. It is also very lonely – it is fruitless to
discuss your ideas with others, as this
can blur the concept and confuse one’s
inspiration,” she says.
“When I start writing, I cannot stop. This
usually takes place in the early hours of
the morning just before and after sunrise.
One carries on for a few hours until
exhausted. However, everyone has their
own pattern of working,” she adds.
When Joan is not busy writing, she
loves to read, sew or take long walks with
her dog Rex-Star. She’s a self-confessed
hermit. At present Hher favourite author
is the South African, Wilbur Smith. “He is
able to recreate dialogue that is totally
authentic and is a master of action and
suspense. He was also once a journalist
and this can be seen in his style.
* Joan’s book, Jacaranda Rain: A South
African Story, will be launched at the Arts
Association Pretoria in Mackie St (off
Queen Wilhelmina) next to the Trim Park,
Nieuw-Muckleneuk on 8 June. The event
will start at 10:30am for 11am.
SUITS
BE
GONE
Who says only women care about fashion? We live in modern times and male fashion looks
can rival their female counterparts any day. But what to wear if suits are not your thing?
Here are a few ideas:
If you’re a man who dreads getting
ready for the office in the morning,
we have a few ideas that might help,
courtesy of Crate|ov Clothes stylist, Big
Kev.
“The good news is that suits are officially
out! That’s right, new reports show that
only 10% of men in the workplace still
wear a suit to work,” Big Kev says.
This after the majority of men polled
said that the change was due to suits just
being too uncomfortable. A more casual,
yet still professional approach is more
comfortable and affordable.
“Wearing an outfit of their choice gives
men a chance to express themselves and
their personalities better, said the study,”
Big Kev adds.
Most workplaces are becoming more
chilled: less of a hierarchy and more of
a team. Long gone are the days where
bosses were seen as scary authoritarian
figures – these days they function more
as coaches and facilitators. So no wonder
dress codes are becoming much less
formal and a lot more casual.
Now don’t go thinking that suits are out
completely.
It used to be that men wore suits
during the day while the more casual
attire were kept for night time. But if
you’re still keen on a suit, most men are
dressing down their suits for after-work
drinks, events or dates. Simply leave off
the tie and go for more casual shoes to
18 Get It Pretoria June 2019
show off your ensemble in a cooler way.
So what to wear when ditching the suit?
JACKETS AND KNITS
A sports jacket can dress up jeans in a
flash while still being less formal than a
blazer. Jerseys and sweaters are also a
good idea in cooler weather.
Opt for a lightweight knit in solid colours
that doesn’t clash with whatever else
you’re wearing. Stay clear of anything too
baggy and make sure your clothes fit you
right.
BUTTON DOWNS AND PANTS
It is important to remember that
professionalism is key.
Smart jeans (not ripped) or chinos in
conservative colours like navy, black
or beige, with a button down solid
colour shirt will look smart in that cool,
unplanned way.
4. Skinny stay-black jean from Country
Road, R899.
Details: www.woolworths.co.za.
5. Camel Frank formal narrow leg chino
from Polo, R999.
Details: www.polo.co.za.
6. Burgundy slim-fit easy Oxford shirt,
R429. Details: www.woolworths.co.za.
KICKS
You know what they say – shoes make the
man, so don’t let your footwear drag you
down. Sneakers are only allowed if your
business is super casual and only if your
boss wears them too. We’d check, just to
make sure.
As a more casual alternative, rather
opt for some soft leather loafers or dress
shoes. Big Kev suggests investing in a pair
of black and brown loafers so you can
wear the right colour with the right pants.
7. Aliade loafers in cognac, R1 699.
Details: www.aldoshoes.co.za.
8. Suede penny loafers in chocolate from
David Jones, R999.
Details: www.woolworths.co.za.
TIP: Expressing your individuality and
style through fashion while at the office
should reflect who you are, but within the
confines of professionalism.
If you’re not sure what your work style is,
why not get the Crate|ov Clothes team to
put something together for you.
Simply supply some information
about your size, style, budget and
work environment, and you’ll get a
keep and pay for what you like. You can
return the rest at no charge.
Hot new
yoga trend
Heat and sweat is synonymous with exercise, but usually don’t involve pods.
Ever heard of hotpod yoga? Yeah, it’s a thing, and we’re going to tell you all
about it.
You might be familiar with yoga
in its more traditional form. But
this is something completely
different.
Introducing Hotpod Yoga. Its aim? To
help you breathe deeper, stretch further
and sweat harder.
As you can imagine, it is a bit different
than your average yoga class, so if it is
your first time, remember to take it slow
and easy.
Apart from the many physical and
mental benefits of yoga, yoga seek to
balance the body and mind through
physical exercises and controlled
breathing.
It is believed that meditative practices
helps to release stress and anxiety,
22 Get It Pretoria June 2019
promoting clarity of mind, better focus
and increased energy and alertness.
Hotpod Yoga, however, should not be
confused with Bikram, the well-known
US-based hot yoga franchise.
Bikram is a strict practice, made up of
26 postures, practised for 90 minutes.
Some Hotpod postures are similar to the
Bikram sequence, as both forms derive
from the same root of yoga.
Hotpod classes are an hour (or 45 min)
long, slightly less hot, typically more
flowing and are less prescriptive –
classes vary.
The pods allow for a studio to be
created pretty much anywhere and
creates a tranquil environment in which
to practise the art of yoga. And did we
mention that it’s inflatable?!
The pods are heated to 37°C to help
the heart and lungs work a little harder.
This will help you burn more calories,
giving you a great cardio workout.
The warmer temperature also
increases flexibility and can prevent
injury while sweating will help eliminate
toxins and help cleanse the body.
Hotpod Yoga was launched in 2013
with a simple mission: to reinvent yoga
for the modern world.
The idea was to create a yoga
experience like no other, and hopefully
attract more people to the practice.
Today, there are over 50 locations
across eight countries practising
Hotpod Yoga.

ABOUT THE CLASSES
Interested in joining a class? Then get
ready for the experience of your life, and
lots of sweat.
As the name suggests, classes all take
place within a heated environment. And
just like regular yoga, the atmosphere is
calm and tranquil.
Classes are rooted in Vinyasa Flow
– a style of yoga that synchronises
movement and breathing, to work the
body and calm the mind.
Each class type will follow a familiar
structure and flow, but teachers do
get to bring their own individual
personalities and styles to make each
class a little different from the other.
THE PODS
Apart from being inflatable, the pods
also glow with a special purple hue. And
it is no coincidence either.
The calming colour will help to
immerse deeply into the practice,
calming the mind, quietening racing
thoughts and transporting you a million
miles from the outside world.
Music also plays a very big part in each
training session and you will definitely
not hear any pan pipes. Hotpod Yoga
music is all about urban-chill beats to
help enhance your flow and take you
deeper into your class.
And the scent … You might notice a
distinct blend of bergamot, lavender
and orange fragrance in the air inside
the pods. This is also done to unwind
the mind and awaken the senses.
WHAT TO PACK
Comfort is key and gym clothing is
recommended – leggings, shorts and
vest tops as it does get sweaty.
Also do not forget to bring water and
a towel to lay on your mat. Mats are
provided.
TRY IT FOR YOURSELF
To understand it fully, you might want to
go try it out for yourself. But remember
to book in advance, as only 20 people
are allowed in a pod.
No under-16s are allowed, but keep an
eye out for the occasional kids class.
Classes are available in Menlo Park and
Olympus. Purchase a single-class pass or
join multipack.
Class passes never expire so you can
join whenever you want. Memberships
are also a possibility if you want to
attend Hotpod Yoga on a regular basis.
be a beer guru to taste your way around
and even sound smart while doing so.
So for the next time you’re at the pub,
or for when you just want to impress the
man in your life, check out this nifty guide
from SAB (South African Breweries) to
taste beer like a pro.
STEP 1:
CLEANSE YOUR PALATE
Anything you consume prior to tasting
your beer can influence the taste, so
cleanse or refresh your mouth. Cheese or
crackers can affect your palate’s sensitivity
to the flavours of certain beers, so keep it
simple and use water.
STEP 2:
OBSERVE THE COLOUR
Observe your beer carefully. The colour
will represent what type of brew it is –
pilsners are a pale straw while American
and English Ales have a golden hue,
porters and stouts are amber brown and
black.
If you are going to taste several
different beers, it is better to taste from
light to dark. This will help you focus on
the developing flavour intensity and
characteristics of the beer style.
STEP 3:
GET A QUICK WHIFF OF THE AROMA
After observing your beer, move the glass
past your nose once or twice – this action
is known as “the drive by”. Your nostrils
and taste buds work together, so your
sense of smell will give you vital clues
about the type of beer you are tasting.
You should be able to pick up roast
notes typical of malts; or pine, citrus,
pepper, and fresh cut grass from the hops;
or perhaps even hints of yeast.
This is when you would detect
undesirable aromas which are called
“off flavours”. The most common one is a
sulphur-type flavour, which can happen
in beers which have been exposed to too
much light. This “off flavour” is somewhat
like percolating coffee, with some people
likening its aroma to the smell of tinned
tuna. Other “off flavours” are aromas like
vinegar and butterscotch toffee, which are
undesirable in beer styles such as lagers.
Always sniff before you take the first
sip – once you swallow a sip of beer,
your ability to smell it will be slightly
diminished.
STEP 4:
GIVE IT A SWIRL
Swirl the glass gently – this releases
the volatiles, which are trapped and
concentrated in the glass. Swirling knocks
some of the CO2 out of the solution,
causing it to foam slightly.
Allowing the beer to mix with the air
provides the drinker with a stronger scent
of the various aromatic components such
as hops and malt.
STEP 5:
TAKE A DEEP SNIFF THIS TIME
Take another deep sniff – not too deep,
to set the stage for you to have that longawaited
taste.
This whiff should differ from the
previous one, as now you’ll be able to get
hints of the aroma. There are three main
aromas to look out for:
- Malts: should smell of honey, biscuit,
caramel, or baked bread flavours, but
can contain hints of roasted coffee
or in the case of stouts, a hint of dark
chocolate.
- Hop aromas: these are generally citrusy,
floral, or perhaps grassy in nature.
- Yeast aromas: these will be fruity or
sulphurous in nature.
STEP 6:
THE LONG-AWAITED SIP
Take a small sip, enough for it to run
across your entire tongue, then let it
slowly roll over your tongue for a few
seconds before you swallow and breathe
out gently.
At this point you’ll taste both broad and
subtle flavours, the former being what
you mainly taste while the latter will be a
hint of a flavour.
Broad flavours range from sweet, salty,
acidy, or simply bitter; while subtler
flavours can range from cloves, fruit,
caramel, coffee, nuts, chocolate, oak and
many more.
STEP 7:
FOOD PAIRINGS TO COMPLEMENT
YOUR BEERS
SAB has a range of beer styles to cater
for varying palates. It is recommended to
have something to eat in between your
beer tasting.
Here are some recommendations:
- Stella Artois, a soft and creamy pilsner,
goes perfectly with creamy food dishes
and seafood, such as a lightly curried
butternut soup.
- Hansa Pilsner, with its crisp flavour, is
best paired with light meals such as a
green salad, steamed broccoli, or even a
fillet of hake.
- A great palate cleanser between beers is
Brutal Fruit Litchi, to give yourself a reset
between the various flavours.
- Carling Black Label, a full-bodied lager, is
best paired with strong-flavoured foods
such as a peppered fillet of springbok
with a creamy mash potato.
- And lastly, Castle Milk Stout – the toffee,
coffee, and mocha flavours found in this
stout are perfectly paired with chocolate
desserts but can also be paired with rich
meat (oxtail and lamb shank) as well as
other puddings made with chocolate
and caramel. A perfect way to end off
your beer-tasting adventure.
STEP 8:
BE BOLD, THE JOURNEY DOESN’T END
HERE
The key to building your palate rests
in being knowledgeable about beer in
general.
In the process you’ll learn what marks
the key differences between an ale and
a lager, what IPAs or Hefeweizens are, as
well as how to distinguish characteristics
of beers.
Your beer-tasting journey can be as
adventurous as you want it to be but
remember, drink responsibly – and beer
tasting isn’t a skill any under-18 should
have. And when in doubt, visit the SAB
World of Beer so you can experience a
beer and food-tasting.
PUT YOUR SKILLS TO THE
BECOME A
BONSAI MASTER
In the spirit of Father’s Day, why not spend some time with the kids and get your hands
dirty with this quirky and cute Bonsai gift idea.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
• Bonsai clippers
(scissors and concave
cutters)
• A juniper tree
(± 4 years old)
• Bonsai soil
• Chopstick
• A bonsai pot
• Wire:
(2 different types – one
thick for the trunk and
one thinner for the
branches)
• Bonsai paste
STEP 1: ASSESS YOUR TREE
Remove your tree from its pot and very carefully dust all
the soil off its roots, you can use the chopstick for those
little corners. Once you have a clear view of the roots, you
can see where the first roots come from.
STEP 2: PRUNING
The goal is for the centre of your bonsai to appear to
be thick, gradually narrowing outwards to the thinnest
branches - this is how bonsai plants manage to get their
bonsai “look”. Cut away any branches that cross, and any
thick branches that are close to the top in the canopy,
where the leaves are. If there are any large cuts on your
tree, put a little bit of bonsai cut paste on. If the tree you
have purchased is looking really raggedy, you can trim
away about a third of it. Also remove all dead or dying
leaves and twigs. Have a look at the tree and decide where
you’d like the apex. Cut off any thicker branches with the
concave cutter.
1 2
26 Get It Pretoria June 2019

STEP 3: SHAPE YOUR TREE
Using thick wire, you will be able to make your bonsai tree
grow sideways like it’s windswept. Place the thick wire in
the soil and make it bend around the trunk of the tree at a
45° angle. Keeping that angle going, wind it all the way up
the trunk to the top, and cut off any excess wire. The tree
is now a little bit pliable, so you can bend it a little to give
it an interesting slant.
STEP 4: WIRING THE BRANCHES
In the same way you wired the tree trunk, you can wire
the branches. Start the wire by looping it around the trunk
once. Extend it down the branches. You can now bend
your branches. Normally, a bonsai tree’s branches run
parallel with the floor, dipping slightly. Try to mimic the
branches of a big tree.
3
4
STEP 5: PREPARE THE BONSAI POT
Bonsai trees don’t like their roots to sit in water, so it’s
important to include a drainage hole at the bottom of the
pot. The hole will need something over it to prevent the soil
from leaking out. A piece of mesh is perfect, you can attach
it to the pot using a piece of wire that is bent into a hairpin
shape. Use the two ends to secure it to the bottom of the
pot by bending them and trimming off excess wire.
Using a long piece of wire, bend it into a square shape.
Later on, you will use this wire to secure the tree to the pot.
The bottom of the pot should have two small holes, feed
the square-shaped wire through these small holes with the
bottom of the square aligning with the bottom of the pot.
STEP 6: PREPARE THE ROOTS
Using the chopstick, scrape away the soil that is around the
roots. The bottom of the roots will be trimmed away, the
soil towards the top can stay. Once you have cleared a fair
amount of soil, you can trim away around 1/3 of the roots.
5
6
STEP 7: POTTING YOUR TREE
Next cover the bottom of the pot with a layer of soil, and
place your tree on top of the soil. Position the tree at an
angle, it shouldn’t be exactly straight. Now you can use
those wires that are sticking up through the bottom of the
pot to hold down the tree. Twist the two ends of the wire
together, making sure the wire holds the tree roots down.
Then, trim away any bits of wire that are still showing. You
can now cover the tree roots with more soil. Push the soil
between the roots, there should be no air pockets, you can
use the chopstick for this.
STEP 8: YOU’RE FINISHED!
ONGOING CARE
Once you have watered the tree, it is ready to be displayed.
Wait four weeks before you apply fertiliser, and be sure to
check that the wire is not damaging the branches.
June
We’re just wild
about Lou Harvey
We’ve long been Lou Harvey fans, but have to admit
the new leopard range is our favourite yet. We’re just
wild about the overnight bag (the perfect size for
a safari weekend away in the bush) ... Smaller (but
equally desirable) options in this new range include
all the nifty bags we use for absolutely everything ...
There are make-up and cosmetic bags, wine coolers
and lunch bags, laptop and stationery bags. Details:
www.louharvey.com. To win a trio of goodies from
the Lou Harvey leopard collection, visit our Facebook
page (Get It Pretoria Magazine), follow the rules on
the “Wild about Lou Harvey” post, and you’ll be in the
draw. Entries close 25 June.
