Sensual Fireworks of Color –
Mauro Bergonzolis Masterpieces
by Holde Heuer Journalist and Author – June 2019
translated from German into English – Franziska Fugger-Babenhausen
Mauro Bergonzoli glances across at his wife Franziska, and the love immediately
shines as crystal clear as sun kissed daylight, in fact it fills the
room, floor to ceiling, wall to wall, even to the most casual observer, it
is obvious that these two are completely and absolutely head over heels
for each other.
His beloved Muse and Manager, his gentle and supportive rock during the
endless periods of creation. His most beautiful, his inspiration, Aphrodite,
his greatest friend and one true love, Franziska Countess Fugger von
Babenhausen. The magnetism is electric, the sparks are flying.
“Every thought, every playtime with our daughters, Blue Aurora and Victoria,
our family rituals and routines in the countryside …everything is a painting.
Nothing is a coincidence. The thoughts we think, the feelings we feel
are much more than the casual passing snapshots of our consciousness’.
They make us into what we are. The thoughts we keep thinking form and
shape our character. The feelings we keep feeling shape our soul.” Indeed
Bergonzolis art has the power to make you fly.
And, having seen the Artists exhibitions, his works echo his words, that
rare, elusive, and precious fusion of truth and beauty. Spirit forms matter,
and faced with the work we find ourselves carried aloft by a spiral of
delicious thoughts and feelings. “The Soul has the color of your thoughts.”
And in Bergonzoli’s world, the eye, the symbol he constantly uses to sign
off his work, his logo in fact, is indeed the window of the soul, as his
paintings lead us joyfully through a riotous celebration of the senses,
sometimes worldly, always magical, ethereal, the eternal philosophical
quest for truth and lasting recognition of self.
Bergonzoli strives for perfection, for complete beauty. To achieve this,
he is open to anything . This, of course, is true of any serious author,
musician and of course especially the painter. Think of all Italian painting
from Masaccio up to the current day. The goal is always the realization of
this rare and precious tryst of truth and beauty. Bergonzoli is convinced
the attainment of a complete and total balance is the goal of all great artists.
Beauty is the most important, credible and clear vehicle with which
to lead the observer to truth. It always shoots straight into the heart.
One simply needs to marvel at Bergonzoli’s sunsets, his fiery St. Mark’s
Square, gently dipped in orange, red, pink and purple or the eroticism of
his thoroughbred horses, dancing as they gallop with nude beauties into
the flaming evening light.
The Maestro with
Artistic beauty trumps natural beauty, think of “The Weather Project” Olafur Eliasson’s
installation in the Tate Modern in London (2004). And now Bergonzoli, the artist many
serious gallerists are convinced can become a new Rauschenberg or Warhol as he
exhibits his work worldwide as far afield as Venice to the Côte d’Azur, Art-Basel, Hong
Kong and Miami. Renowned art historians describe Bergonzoli as the most important
representative of Neo-Pop-Art currently working anywhere in the world. His art is of
his age, epochal, devoid of intellectual stuffiness, pretension, and even the slightest
evasion of raw emotion and feeling, all these are conceits foreign to the artist, and
banished entirely from his work. “My art is and always will be positive”. It is my absolute
motivation, absorbs every fibre of my energy.
If Bergonzoli’s style reminds some people of Jeff Koon’s Kitch-Art, or others find his
joyous and exuberant take on life to be de trop , then so be it! Bergonzoli’s statement
expresses an eternal desire and permanent promise: “You get what you see!”
Each and every one of his depictions of life can be made possible by the imagination
of the viewer, and his style is unmistakeable. A colorful mix of Pop Art and comics,
and often humorous too, an absolute refusal to take himself too seriously, magic
bunnies – why not ? - and that ubiquitous all seeing eye that appears again and again
throughout his work, the eternal search for truth that always lies beneath the slick and
seemingly superficial veneer.
There is no doubt that discerning collectors around the world are learning to
appreciate this exceptional artist, but sadly the world of the Medici, the potentates who
breathed life into the arts, cherished and supported the great artists of their time, is
long past. So where are the great patrons of today ? – I urge you, step up to the plate !!
The brilliant power of his artworks shines blindingly bright like that of all the greats
from Roy Lichtenstein, Goya, Leonardo da Vinci, Andy Warhol or James Rizzi, in every
medium, and every conceivable form of expression. The artwork on wine-bottles, ceramics,
sculptures, race-cars, and even giant chewing-gum packages – the entire world is his
stage, there are no limits - ever ! According to Mauro Bergonzoli, everything can be
made “more wonderful and stronger in it’s own beauty.” This is the visionary’s only
wish: to portray a festival of the senses, classic pieces celebrating life, seeing, and
feeling! For him, every place carries it’s own magic, and hence his incomparable works
reach new heights of profound and fundamental fusion. Each painting is filled with
pure Love…Amore. The kissing mouth, the all seeing eye, the delicious and uninhibited
pleasures of the senses. The artist is solely interested in the emotional condition, the
creation of the whole fullness of life and meaning, pure joy and infinite energy.
On one hand you have the visions of the artist, and on the other his other magical half,
who supports, organises, inspires him, and also manages his business. And between
them comes nothing and nobody, so powerful and perfectly matched is the couple,
Franziska and Mauro, forever in love. Hence, it is possible to surpass Yin and Yang
in their completion. The Fairytale Family lives in their paradise with their magical
daughters Blue Aurora and Victoria in the picturesque countryside of Tiefenried outside
Augsburg. Soon they will take up golf, a wonderful new Sujet for Bergonzoli’s
Neo-Pop-Art. Another Dorado of beauty and humour in it’s full complexity. All in all,
simply paradise!
