SHALOM AND MORAL IMAGINATION<br />

FOR BUSINESS TECHNOLOGISTS<br />

Abstract: This essay addresses <strong>the</strong> problem “What are <strong>the</strong> ethical implications from a biblical perspective as technological<br />

changes reshape stakeholder relationships?” It characterizes <strong>the</strong> effects of technological change upon stakeholder<br />

relationships <strong>in</strong> microeconomic terms, so that various technologies can be understood <strong>in</strong> terms of <strong>the</strong>ir implications.<br />

It <strong>the</strong>n describes <strong>the</strong> <strong>Christian</strong> ethical concept of “shalom,” and explores some of its implications for stakeholder<br />

relationships with biblical ground<strong>in</strong>g. It next explores <strong>the</strong> microeconomic stakeholder implications of technological<br />

change <strong>in</strong> terms of shalom. It f<strong>in</strong>ally discusses moral imag<strong>in</strong>ation as a practical technique for understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> ethical<br />

implications of a novel situation, envision<strong>in</strong>g practical and moral alternatives, and select<strong>in</strong>g an optimal alternative. This<br />

essay contributes to <strong>Christian</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess ethics by apply<strong>in</strong>g an exegetical approach to shalom to a class of contemporary<br />

bus<strong>in</strong>ess ethics problems (i.e., technological <strong>in</strong>novation), <strong>the</strong>reby overcom<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> hermeneutical distance between <strong>the</strong><br />

horizons of Scripture and contemporary bus<strong>in</strong>ess technology. It also contributes to <strong>Christian</strong> management practice by<br />

specify<strong>in</strong>g a practical approach to identify<strong>in</strong>g and solv<strong>in</strong>g ethical problems posed by technological <strong>in</strong>novation.<br />
