Primary Times Hertfordshire
EARLY TIMES
Early Times
When the pressure gets too much
Raising a child is a learning curve for everyone and while
it’s a hugely positive and exciting experience, it can also be
overwhelming and isolating at times
Don’t compare yourself to other parents
“Each person will have a different parenting style, and every baby will have
different needs”, says midwife, Vicki Scott. “You are the only mum, or dad your
baby knows, and in their eyes no one is better than you or could do a better job.
To help relieve some parenting pressure, mum of one GP Dr Pixie McKenna,
and mum of two, midwife Vicki Scott, share their advice on how to avoid these
pressure points and what to do when things get a little bit too much.
Remember, parenthood doesn’t come with a manual
What might be right for one baby, might not necessarily be right for another;
trust your instincts and do what feels best. As long as your baby is safe and
healthy, you’re doing fine.”
Branch out and make new friends
Although it can feel daunting to make new friends at this stage in life,
remember that they are in the same position as you and probably feel
just as keen to make friends as you do.”
Speak up about how you’re feeling
“Being a new parent can often be challenging and isolating at times.
“If you feel like you’re really struggling, make sure you speak to your health
visitor, midwife or GP who will be able to provide you with some more
tailored advice and support.”
Remember that every baby is different
Midwife Vicki Scott comments, “Let your baby develop at their own pace and
encourage their achievements. There is no one size fits all when it comes to
milestones like weaning and crawling, so just remember that as long as they’re
happy and heathy, you’re doing fine.
Turn off social media
“There is a lot of pressure out there for parents to look and act perfect,
particularly on social media. However, it’s important to remember that not
everything you see on social media is a true reflection of parenthood,”
says GP Dr Pixie McKenna.
Don’t stress about the mess
Dr Pixie McKenna says, “During the first year, a baby is trying new food, taking
part in messy play and exploring. It is therefore certain to cause at least a little bit
of mess! This is completely normal and it is important to let them go through this
messy phase as they start to learn to feed themselves. Try not to get stressed
about your previously tidy and organised house looking less and less like a show
home, and remember that there is a difference between dirt and mess.
Anti-Bullying Week with…
Andy Day
Primary Times teams up with Andy Day to support Anti-Bullying Week which is
celebrated in over three quarters of schools across the country, 11 th - 15 th November
Andy Day is set to hit our screens in March
2020 with his new CBBC show Andy and the
Band, but the children’s TV star is also busy
playing a leading part in Anti-Bullying Week.
We tracked down the frontman of Andy
and the Odd Socks to find out why tackling
bullying is close to his heart.
When asked how he got involved in bullying
work, Andy explained “I wasn’t bullied at
school, but I saw others who were, and I’ve
seen the effects that bullying has had on
their personal growth into adulthood.
For some it has toughened them and for
many it has diminished their confidence
and potential”.
“It starts young”, he explains. “Having worked
in kid’s TV most of my career, when I got the
chance to be involved in Anti-Bullying week,
it just chimed with me”.
Andy Day has a children’s
band, ‘Andy and the
Odd Socks’, and
together they
came up with
a simple idea for supporting Anti-Bullying
week. “Why not highlight what makes us all
unique with an Odd Socks Day? Children
could celebrate difference and diversity
simply by pulling on a pair of odd socks
and raise some money for a good cause
in the process”.
Odd Socks Day started in 2017 and has
since been a runaway success, raising
over £60,000 to support the Anti-Bullying
Alliance’s work.
Every year Andy records a song to support
the theme of Anti-Bullying and this year’s
theme is ‘Change Starts with Us’. “The
idea is to highlight the changes, the little
things each of us can do, that make
all the difference to someone on
the receiving end of bullying”, Andy explains.
For Andy, tackling bullying “could be
as simple as being there to listen to
someone who is hurting inside. To build
their confidence and support them. Or
thinking twice before posting a hurtful
post on social media. Or speaking out
when banter has crossed the line into
something more harmful.”
“Most of us will experience bullying in some
capacity throughout our lives. Young or
old, we can all do something to show that
bullying is never acceptable.” Andy is working
on the song ‘Change’ and video as we speak.
“All I can say is: think the Muppets meet
Strictly, Odd Socks style! This tune will really
get kids (and grown-ups!) up and dancing!”
In addition to working with Anti-Bullying
week, Andy and the Odd Socks have just
finished filming their new comedy for CBBC
‘Andy and the Band’ and are looking forward
to seeing that broadcast in March 2020.
On top of that, Andy explains, “we’ve had
an amazing summer touring the festival
scene – including performances at the BBC
Summer Social.”
“We’ve been fitting in visits to Odd Socks Day
schools too. Every day is an adventure at the
moment! All our focus now is on making this
year’s Odd Socks Day the biggest and best
one ever!”
Find out more
about how you can get involved at
anti-bullyingalliance.org.uk/anti-bullying-week
Get involved with Odd Socks Day
for Anti-Bullying Week!
Odd Socks Day, with support from SafeToNet, takes place
on Tuesday of Anti Bullying Week – the 12th of November
– and helps raise awareness around anti-bullying.
Odd Socks Day is designed to be fun! It’s an opportunity
for children to express themselves and celebrate their
individuality and what makes us all unique!
There is no pressure on the children to wear the latest
fashion or for parents to buy expensive costumes.
All they have to do to take part is wear odd socks, it
couldn’t be simpler!
We would like to invite children to make a £1
donation - or any donation you think appropriate -
to support us in continuing the week every year.
TRICK OR TREAT!
Five Tips for a frighteningly fun Halloween… without breaking the bank!
Whether it’s trick or treating, carving pumpkins, apple bobbing or lighting a bonfire, Halloween season can quickly become an expensive
time of year for families. Following America’s lead, Halloween in the UK has gained massive popularity, with statistics showing that Britons
spent £419 million on Halloween in 2018. However, the holiday for all thing’s horror, hilarity and fun does not need to break the bank every
year. Primary Times have put together 5 different ways to have a frighteningly fun Halloween with the children, without the hefty price tag.
Homemade
Trick or Treats
Whether you’re planning on heading out trick
or treating on Halloween night, or just having
a spooky night-in with the kids, the sweet
treats don’t have to cost a fortune. You could
make your own sweets by melting leftover
chocolate into spooky shapes or branch
out with your treat selection to offer your
children fruit, popcorn or party rings.
DIY Decorations
There’s no need to spend a fortune on Halloween
decorations when you can instead use items you have
lying around the house. Large hanging ghosts that will
sway spookily in the breeze can be made easily by draping
a white sheet, tablecloth or pillowcase over a balloon
and tying below the head. Alternatively, scarecrows
to decorate the party room, trees, patio or porch can
be put together cheaply by stuffing old clothes with
rags or rolled up newspapers – Don’t forget the elastic
bands to create the scarecrow’s knobbly knees!
Crafty
Costumes
Shop-bought Halloween costumes can look great,
but often come with a price tag to match. For an
equally effective result, try making and sewing your
children’s costumes yourself using items from around
the house. A yellow shirt and some overalls can make
a cute Minion, some black clothes and white tape will
transform your children into scary skeletons, or simply
an old sheet torn into strips and wrapped around your
kids will create some seriously spooky mummies.
Spooky
Snacks
Homemade baked goods can be a
great way to save on the pennies
whilst having fun with the kids too.
A batch of delicious Spooktacular
Halloween biscuits will be sure to
disappear in no time – take a look at
our recipe to have a go at home.
Penny
Saving
Party
Games
Party games are a great
way to add activities
this Halloween without
any additional costs.
You could try the
‘Halloween Feel Box’,
a fun sensory game
where the children
have to guess the
different household
items in the box, or
‘Pin the stem on the
pumpkin’, a spooky
alternative to ‘Pin the
tail on the donkey’.
Spooktacular
Halloween Biscuits
Ingredients
(Makes 6-8 Biscuits)
• 100g unsalted butter
• 100g caster sugar
• 1 free-range egg,
lightly beaten
• 275g plain flour
• 1 tsp vanilla extract
To Decorate
• 400g icing sugar
• 3-4 tbsp water
• 2-3 drops food
colourings
• Preheat the oven to 190C/375F/Gas 5.
• Beat the butter and sugar together in a bowl
• Beat in the egg and vanilla extract
• Stir in the flour until the mixture comes
together as a dough.
• Roll the dough out to a thickness of 1cm. Cut
biscuits out of the dough using Halloween-style
cutters and carefully place onto the baking tray.
• Bake the biscuits for 8-10 minutes and set
aside to cool on a wire rack.
• For the decoration, sift the icing sugar into a
large mixing bowl and stir in enough water to
create a smooth paste. Stir in the food colouring.
• Carefully spread the icing onto the biscuits
and set aside until the icing hardens.
What is Children’s
Occupational
Therapy (OT)?
People always say to me “you’re so lucky you love your job”
Yes, they’re right I do, but I wonder if they actually know what the
job of an Occupational Therapist entails?
After qualifying in 2003 I thought that surely by 2019 OT
would be as well-known as Physiotherapy, but unfortunately
here in the UK it isn’t. Well I am going to explain the real benefits
of an Occupational Therapist and how OT can really improve the
quality of life for a child.
Everyone has occupations and for children theirs are playing, going
to school, socialising, getting dressed and eating their food etc.
Sometimes for various reasons children cannot function as they
want to in their occupations, whether it be due to physical, sensory
or cognitive reasons. An Occupational Therapist assesses why
the child cannot function in the activity and establishes the
underlying reasons for this.
I at Superstars Therapy see children in their home and school
environment. When an occupational therapist sees a child in his/
her natural environment, there is an opportunity to observe first
hand any functional challenges that the child might face on a
daily basis. Working in the home or school also allows parents and
teachers the chance to be 'hands-on' in the therapy processes
which is more beneficial for the child.
Occupational Therapist’s will assess children depending on the
area of difficulty. This can include an assessment of the child’s
play (turn taking, sharing, socialising, messy play tolerance), fine
motor (hand strength, handwriting, using a knife and fork), gross
motor (balance, catching ability, body awareness, sitting posture),
sensory processing (attention, tolerance to noise and touch,
sensory seeking behaviours, fussy eating), visual perceptual
(letter formation, copying from the board, colour discrimination)
and independence in self-care skills (dressing, bottom wiping,
awareness of hygiene, drinking from an open cup).
Once we have established the underlying reasons why the child
cannot function as well as they could in their occupations, the
intervention includes fun creative activities and individualised
advice programmes to help the child maximise their potential and
thrive in their occupations!
And develop their SUPERPOWERS!
Occupational Therapists can work across a number of
different areas but what we share is our love for our job, our
values and our desire to improve the quality of life for people
whatever their age or ability.
How to look after your child’s
teeth from day one
Even babies can develop tooth decay
if good feeding habits aren’t practiced.
Putting a baby to sleep with a bottle
might be convenient, but can harm
the baby’s teeth. When the sugars
from juice or milk remain on a baby’s
teeth for hours, they can eat away
at the enamel. Sucking on a bottle
throughout the day can be equally
damaging to young teeth.
Children should see a dentist by their
first birthday. These visits can help find
problems early and help kids get used
to visiting the dentist so they’ll have
less fear about going as they get older.
- Once your baby gets teeth, brush
them with an infant toothbrush.
Use water and a tiny bit of fluoride
toothpaste (about the size of a grain
of rice).
- Around age 2, your child should learn
to spit while brushing. Avoid giving
your child water to swish and spit
because this might make swallowing
toothpaste more likely.
- Kids ages 3 and up should use
only a pea-sized amount of fluoride
toothpaste.
- Always supervise kids younger than
8 while brushing, as they are more
likely to swallow toothpaste.
Give your CV an MOT
If you’re thinking about a return to
work now the kids are back at school
or seeking a more flexible role to give
a better work/life balance, now’s a
great time to make sure your CV is in
top shape!
Ten2Two is a local recruitment agency
specialising in part-time and flexible
working roles and they see hundreds
of CV’s daily. Here are their top tips to
make your shine:
1. Your CV has one purpose: to get you
an interview. Keep this in mind when
reviewing or rewriting yours.
2. A good CV will have an opening
statement outlining who you are, a
snapshot of your experience
and what it is you want.
3. Focus on using relevant
wording for the position you
will be applying for. Ideally,
you’ll have a job advert in
front of you and be able to
use terminology from this
to ‘pepper’ your CV with the
same words.
4. You may have many years
of experience, but really the
last few positions will be the
ones recruiters focus on first
so aim to keep everything on
two pages (three maximum).
5. If you’ve had a gap in your
career it’s important that
you cover this. You don’t
want any questions raised by missing
information. You could say, ‘Career
break to raise children’ or just ‘Career
break’.
6. Lay your CV out chronologically,
most recent position first (even if this
is a break).
You’d be amazed that not everyone
knows how to write a CV or takes
enough care and attention over it.
Make yours shine and your effort will
be sure to pay off!
You can find more tips about how to
write a CV and strong cover letter
and register for work on the
Sing! Dance! Act!
Primary Times explores how the performing arts benefits our children,
and how parents can get involved at home
The performing arts are
a fantastic way to help
children to develop their
creative skills. There
are no wrong answers,
and everyone is actively encouraged to
explore new and alternatives opinions.
Whether its dancing, acting, or singing,
the arts can teach our children listening
and communication skills, boost their
self-belief and confidence, and improve
their academic performance. But most
importantly, the performing arts are a
way for children to let off steam and
have a lot of fun!
One of the main advantages of taking part
in the performing arts in young individuals
is the improvement of communication
skills. Acting and drama, for example, will
help with their presentation skills, vocal
projection, tone of speech, and articulation.
Listening skills will also become refined
by taking on board stage directions from
teachers, collaborating with peers, and
working together toward a common goal of
a fantastic end-performance. From learning
new lines, to remembering their acting cues
and timing, and rehearsing scenes time
and again, children can improve their
focus, memory, concentration, and
quick-learning skills.
For some children, confidence comes
naturally to them, however others needs
more support and encouragement in order
to develop into confident individuals. The
performing arts can provide children with
the combination of a safe environment and
activities they love outside of the normal
classroom environment, allowing them to
gradually come out of their shells.
Overcoming backstage, pre-performance
nerves can normalise a child’s feeling of
anxiety. Whilst it won’t take away nerves
they may have, it’s a fantastic way to teach
them methods of successfully overcoming
feelings of pressure. Practices like
contributing ideas to a drama performance
or adding new moves to a dance routine
can allow them to express their personality
in ways they may not have done before.
Links to improved performance in maths,
reading and writing from involvement in
performing arts are widely documented
too. Studies have found that creative and
critical thinking, problem-solving, and
reasoning increase and improve when arts
education is added to the mix.
Top Tips!
For how to
incorporate
the arts into
your home
When you read to your children, be
dramatic. Act out stories with props and
costumes. Encourage them to create
their own stories to act out for you.
Save old costumes and props for dress-up fun.
Add to the collection with clothing you no longer need:
hats, scarves, purses, shoes, and any other hand-medowns
you can find.
Introduce dance into the home. Teach your children
traditional dances you know or improvise with them.
Body movement is fun and good exercise.
Sing together. Teach the kids your favourite songs.
Expand your musical repertoire at home and in the
car. Venture into unknown musical territory so that
you and the children can hear something out of your
usual fare. This can be easily expanded by tuning
into a different radio stations and by checking out
cassettes and CDs from the public library — all for free!

Ten years ago I opened my clinic
to support parents for children with
learning difficulties.
Like all parents with a child who
struggled at school, I was looking
for answers. My boy was diagnosed
with auditory processing issues
which teachers did not understand,
thinking he ignored them when in
fact he was eager to learn. Further
he couldn’t understand why he was
constantly told off at school.
I was worried sick for him and his
academic future. Then by chance
I came across an ad in the Times
Newspaper, about a course to help
children with dyslexia, dyspraxia,
ADHD, Autism involving special
physical exercises that trained the
brain to improve cognition and
performance. I was sceptical but
completed the course, going onto
study numerous programmes
First Class Learning – The
Best Choice
First Class Learning is a worksheet
based, math’s and English program.
The program is in line with the
National Curriculum and reinforces
what the children are learning at
school.
“The First Class Learning English
program is more than just a
reading program! The Developing
Understanding module helped guide
my child through the given text so
that she not only understood what she
was reading but had the opportunity
to evaluate and analyse before writing
down her answers.”
including NLP coaching and
nutritional therapy via the College
of Naturopathic Medicine in
London. All to progress my son.
This has culminated in him getting
a scholarship into and graduating
from Bournmouth University with
a 2-1 a BA degree. Then going
onto working for an Internationally
renowned Advertising and vfx
company in Soho, London.
My work now is to help as many
children and families as I’m able.
With ten years of experience
working with children and with my
qualifications in Nutritional Therapy,
I am confident I can turn your child
around, making them even more
amazing at home and at school.
Tutor Doctor
For most parents, good education is
a priority and a growing number are
turning to Private tuition to support
their children’s academic progress.
Tutor Doctor believes the benefits for
students are vast, we can address
specific individual difficulties ensuring
they can tackle more complex
problems. When a tutor works one to
one with a child there is no escape, no
one to impress or feel silly in front of,
so the child is more likely to be honest
esteem. To support this, we visit
schools to explain the process step
by step, offering ways to help parents
to prepare their child. This is a free
presentation, open to all primary
schools. Our ethos and approach is
one of care and nurturing which is
encapsulated in our logo “When a
about any difficulties they experience.
Sessions are intense, going at the
child’s own pace, allowing for more
Having a tutor to iron out a few
difficulties will certainly increase their
confidence. Parents also develop a
