<strong>Ben</strong> <strong>McLaughlin</strong>’s mother, Shirley, was both his harshest critic and his greatest<br />
supporter. A graphic designer, she was <strong>by</strong> nature a keeper-of-things and it is from her<br />
lifetime’s book collection that <strong>Ben</strong> has taken the titles for the <strong>work</strong>s in this show.<br />
The Battersea flat near the River Thames where she lived for most of her life is where<br />
<strong>Ben</strong> and his sisters have many of their strongest childhood memories. Every wall was<br />
covered in a collage of images - from posters and paintings to the children’s drawings.<br />
Rather than forbidding her children to draw on the walls of every room she made a<br />
practical and inspired rule which allowed them to make art on the lining paper of the<br />
hallway.<br />
This exhibition is dedicated to <strong>Ben</strong>’s mother and father.<br />
<strong>Ben</strong>’s recent paintings are concerned with gaps in one’s recollections. Like memories,<br />
the inspiration to make art comes and goes and is seldom reliable. And, like memories,<br />
good art may not arrive on demand, but it is worth waiting for and should be treasured.<br />
