Anti-Bullying Week with…
Andy Day
Primary Times teams up with Andy Day to support Anti-Bullying Week which is
celebrated in over three quarters of schools across the country, 11 th - 15 th November
Andy Day is set to hit our screens in March
2020 with his new CBBC show Andy and the
Band, but the children’s TV star is also busy
playing a leading part in Anti-Bullying Week.
We tracked down the frontman of Andy
and the Odd Socks to find out why tackling
bullying is close to his heart.
When asked how he got involved in bullying
work, Andy explained “I wasn’t bullied at
school, but I saw others who were, and I’ve
seen the effects that bullying has had on
their personal growth into adulthood.
For some it has toughened them and for
many it has diminished their confidence
and potential”.
“It starts young”, he explains. “Having worked
in kid’s TV most of my career, when I got the
chance to be involved in Anti-Bullying week,
it just chimed with me”.
Andy Day has a children’s
band, ‘Andy and the
Odd Socks’, and
together they
came up with
a simple idea for supporting Anti-Bullying
week. “Why not highlight what makes us all
unique with an Odd Socks Day? Children
could celebrate difference and diversity
simply by pulling on a pair of odd socks
and raise some money for a good cause
in the process”.
Odd Socks Day started in 2017 and has
since been a runaway success, raising
over £60,000 to support the Anti-Bullying
Alliance’s work.
Every year Andy records a song to support
the theme of Anti-Bullying and this year’s
theme is ‘Change Starts with Us’. “The
idea is to highlight the changes, the little
things each of us can do, that make
all the difference to someone on
the receiving end of bullying”, Andy explains.
For Andy, tackling bullying “could be
as simple as being there to listen to
someone who is hurting inside. To build
their confidence and support them. Or
thinking twice before posting a hurtful
post on social media. Or speaking out
when banter has crossed the line into
something more harmful.”
“Most of us will experience bullying in some
capacity throughout our lives. Young or
old, we can all do something to show that
bullying is never acceptable.” Andy is working
on the song ‘Change’ and video as we speak.
“All I can say is: think the Muppets meet
Strictly, Odd Socks style! This tune will really
get kids (and grown-ups!) up and dancing!”
In addition to working with Anti-Bullying
week, Andy and the Odd Socks have just
finished filming their new comedy for CBBC
‘Andy and the Band’ and are looking forward
to seeing that broadcast in March 2020.
On top of that, Andy explains, “we’ve had
an amazing summer touring the festival
scene – including performances at the BBC
Summer Social.”
“We’ve been fitting in visits to Odd Socks Day
schools too. Every day is an adventure at the
moment! All our focus now is on making this
year’s Odd Socks Day the biggest and best
one ever!”
Find out more
Get involved with Odd Socks Day
for Anti-Bullying Week!
Odd Socks Day, with support from SafeToNet, takes place
on Tuesday of Anti Bullying Week – the 12th of November
– and helps raise awareness around anti-bullying.
Odd Socks Day is designed to be fun! It’s an opportunity
for children to express themselves and celebrate their
individuality and what makes us all unique!
There is no pressure on the children to wear the latest
fashion or for parents to buy expensive costumes.
All they have to do to take part is wear odd socks, it
couldn’t be simpler!
We would like to invite children to make a £1
donation - or any donation you think appropriate -
to support us in continuing the week every year.
Have fun and stay safe this
fireworks season
With Bonfire Night and Diwali Celebrations
just around the corner,
make sure your kids are aware of
the safety issues around fireworks.
Lots of guidance is available on
the Royal Society for the Prevention
of Accidents (ROSPA) website,
including the full firework code.
Children must be supervised
around fireworks, enjoying them
from a safe distance. Organised
displays are always the safest
option, but if you are planning to
have a fireworks party at home,
make sure only adults deal with
setting up, lighting and disposing
of the fireworks after use. Remind
children never to return to a
firework once it has been lit, and
never to put fireworks in pockets
or to throw them.Sparklers are
great fun, but burns from sparklers
can be really serious since they
burn at fierce temperatures. Make
sure children wear gloves when
holding sparklers, and that used
sparklers are put straight into a
bucket of cold water. Hot drinks
and fireworks parties also tend to
go hand in hand. Check hot drinks
are well out of children’s reach
and away from the edges of tables
and worktops where they could be
knocked off. A child’s skin is much
more sensitive than an adult’s and
a hot drink can still scald a child 15
minutes after being made.
First Aid on the Curriculum
“After 10 years of campaigning
by the British Red Cross, it will be
compulsory for first aid skills to be
taught in all state schools in England
from 2020. It’s an impactful way to
give young people the confidence
they need to help someone.
As parents, Ben and I are so thrilled
our children will be able to learn these
important skills so that they never
feel completely helpless in an
emergency situation.
It’s also a relief knowing that if
anything were to happen to them in
the future, more people might be
able to help.
We support the British Red Cross’s
calls for it to become a compulsory
part of the curriculum throughout the
UK so all school children get the same
chance to learn how to save a life.”-
gently encouraging rugby specific
skills such as running with the ball,
finding space, kicking, catching,
scoring a try and much more.
AUTUMN FESTIVITIES
Autumn
Festivities
Christmas
Light Festival
Oxford’s historic city will be
celebrating world achievements
in its annual ‘Christmas Light
Festival’ this November. Inspired
by the 50th anniversary of the
moon landings, the theme
‘Discovery’ is to be the focus of a
series of illuminated installations,
exhibitions, performances
and more. Over the weekend of
Friday 15th to Sunday 17th
November, the city centre will
be lit-up as cultural organisations,
schools, community
groups, artists and performers
populate the streets and buildings
ready to share their Discoveries.
The festival is produced by
Oxford City Council and receives
funds from Arts Council England.
www.oxlightfest.com
Upton House and Gardens
Open 11am-5pm every day until 3
November. Come and collect a spotter
sheet from reception and see how
many signs of Autumn you can find
around the grounds. The Woodland
Den will be open for children to take
part in autumn related nature activities
(including making wild crowns – as
part of ‘50 things’).
26, 29, 31 October and
2 November, 11.30am-2pm
We will also be inviting children to
decorate a plant pot and fill it with
paperwhites. These delicate flowers
(which can be seen on display in the
house at Christmas) will look perfect
on your Christmas dinner table. Spotter
sheets and wild crowns are free, but
the planting is £3 per child.
Abominable
DreamWorks Animation and Pearl Studio’s co-production Abominable takes
audiences on an epic 2,000-mile adventure from the streets of Shanghai to
the breath taking Himalayan
snowscapes. When teenager
Yi encounters a young Yeti
on the roof of her apartment
building in Shanghai, she and her
mischievous friends, Jin and Peng,
name him ‘Everest’ and embark
on an epic quest to reunite the
magical creature with his family
at the highest point on Earth.
But the trio of friends will have
to stay one-step ahead of Burnish, a wealthy man intent on capturing a Yeti, and
zoologist Dr Zara to help Everest get home. Abominable is in UK cinemas from
11 October.
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil
In Disney’s sequel to the 2014 global box office hit, Maleficent and her
goddaughter Aurora begin to question the complex family ties that bind them
as they are pulled in different directions by impending nuptials, unexpected
allies and dark new forces at
play. The years have been kind
to Maleficent and Aurora. Their
relationship, born of heartbreak,
revenge and ultimately love,
has flourished. Yet the hatred
between man and the fairies
still exists. Aurora’s impending
marriage to Prince Phillip is cause
for celebration in the kingdom
of Ulstead and the neighbouring
Moors, as the wedding serves to
unite the two worlds. When an unexpected encounter introduces a powerful
new alliance, Maleficent and Aurora are pulled apart to opposing sides in a
Great War, testing their loyalties and causing them to question whether they
can truly be family. Maleficent: Mistress of Evil opens in cinemas on 18 October.
Family man but there’s
trouble on the horizon
in the shape of design
TV phenomenon Margaux Needler. The Addams Family mansion is the one
thing blocking her dream of selling all the houses in the neighbourhood. Funny,
outlandish and completely iconic, the Addams Family redefines what it means to
be a good neighbour. Oscar Isaac and Charlize Theron lead the spook-tacular
cast. The Addams Family is in cinemas from 25 October.
Hallowe
TRICK OR TREAT!
Five Tips for a frighteningly fun Halloween… without breaking the bank!
Whether it’s trick or treating, carving pumpkins, apple bobbing or lighting a bonfire, Halloween season can quickly become an expensive
time of year for families. Following America’s lead, Halloween in the UK has gained massive popularity, with statistics showing that Britons
spent £419 million on Halloween in 2018. However, the holiday for all thing’s horror, hilarity and fun does not need to break the bank every
year. Primary Times have put together 5 different ways to have a frighteningly fun Halloween with the children, without the hefty price tag.
Homemade
Trick or Treats
Whether you’re planning on heading out trick
or treating on Halloween night, or just having
a spooky night-in with the kids, the sweet
treats don’t have to cost a fortune. You could
make your own sweets by melting leftover
chocolate into spooky shapes or branch
out with your treat selection to offer your
children fruit, popcorn or party rings.
DIY Decorations
There’s no need to spend a fortune on Halloween
decorations when you can instead use items you have
lying around the house. Large hanging ghosts that will
sway spookily in the breeze can be made easily by draping
a white sheet, tablecloth or pillowcase over a balloon
and tying below the head. Alternatively, scarecrows
to decorate the party room, trees, patio or porch can
be put together cheaply by stuffing old clothes with
rags or rolled up newspapers – Don’t forget the elastic
bands to create the scarecrow’s knobbly knees!
Crafty
Costumes
Shop-bought Halloween costumes can look great,
but often come with a price tag to match. For an
equally effective result, try making and sewing your
children’s costumes yourself using items from around
the house. A yellow shirt and some overalls can make
a cute Minion, some black clothes and white tape will
transform your children into scary skeletons, or simply
an old sheet torn into strips and wrapped around your
kids will create some seriously spooky mummies.
Spooky
Snacks
Homemade baked goods can be a
great way to save on the pennies
whilst having fun with the kids too.
A batch of delicious Spooktacular
Halloween biscuits will be sure to
disappear in no time – take a look at
our recipe to have a go at home.
Penny
Saving
Party
Games
Party games are a great
way to add activities
this Halloween without
any additional costs.
You could try the
‘Halloween Feel Box’,
a fun sensory game
where the children
have to guess the
different household
items in the box, or
‘Pin the stem on the
pumpkin’, a spooky
alternative to ‘Pin the
tail on the donkey’.
Spooktacular
Halloween Biscuits
Ingredients
(Makes 6-8 Biscuits)
• 100g unsalted butter
• 2-3 drops food
colourings
• Beat the butter and sugar together in a bowl
• Beat in the egg and vanilla extract
together as a dough.
biscuits out of the dough using Halloween-style
cutters and carefully place onto the baking tray.
• Bake the biscuits for 8-10 minutes and set
aside to cool on a wire rack.
• For the decoration, sift the icing sugar into a
large mixing bowl and stir in enough water to
create a smooth paste. Stir in the food colouring.
• Carefully spread the icing onto the biscuits
and set aside until the icing hardens.
The new academic year got off to
a flying start for our Year 6 boys
Consistent excellence for
Cranford House
Cranford House is extremely proud
to be celebrating another set of
superb GCSE results. With 63%
of all grades 9-7 (A*-A) their 2019
results demonstrate the consistent
academic excellence for which the
school is renowned. Impressive
results like these have seen the
South Oxfordshire school ranked
in the top ten nationally among
the Sunday Times National Parent
shelters, to sleep under. They
returned full of stories of their
adventures. This is just one of the
many trips offered to boys to enrich
the curriculum.
A Choristership in New College
Each September four or five sevenyear-old
boys start as choristers in
New College Choir, and begin an
extraordinary musical and educational
journey. Six years later they leave
as expert musicians. They sing in
concerts across the world, record
CDs, and take part in choral services
in Oxford’s grandest medieval
chapel. Choristers learn exceptional
musical skills but also the fun and
challenges of being a team player,
as well as commitment and focus
which enhances every aspect of
their lives. Parents often ask how an
‘ordinary’ small boy is transformed into
a musician of professional standard,
while still being a ‘normal’ school boy.
The answer lies in our specialist music
programme developed by the choir
director, Robert Quinney, with choir
and school staff. We recruit in year 2
and choristers start musical training at
the start of year 3, before becoming
full choristers in year 5. The qualities
we value are enthusiasm and energy,
love of singing and a quick musical
ear, and a spark in the eye!
Sing! Dance! Act!
Primary Times explores how the performing arts benefits our children,
and how parents can get involved at home
The performing arts are
a fantastic way to help
children to develop their
creative skills. There
are no wrong answers,
and everyone is actively encouraged to
explore new and alternatives opinions.
Whether its dancing, acting, or singing,
the arts can teach our children listening
and communication skills, boost their
self-belief and confidence, and improve
their academic performance. But most
importantly, the performing arts are a
way for children to let off steam and
have a lot of fun!
One of the main advantages of taking part
in the performing arts in young individuals
is the improvement of communication
skills. Acting and drama, for example, will
help with their presentation skills, vocal
projection, tone of speech, and articulation.
Listening skills will also become refined
by taking on board stage directions from
teachers, collaborating with peers, and
working together toward a common goal of
a fantastic end-performance. From learning
new lines, to remembering their acting cues
and timing, and rehearsing scenes time
and again, children can improve their
focus, memory, concentration, and
quick-learning skills.
For some children, confidence comes
naturally to them, however others needs
more support and encouragement in order
to develop into confident individuals. The
performing arts can provide children with
the combination of a safe environment and
activities they love outside of the normal
classroom environment, allowing them to
gradually come out of their shells.
Overcoming backstage, pre-performance
nerves can normalise a child’s feeling of
anxiety. Whilst it won’t take away nerves
they may have, it’s a fantastic way to teach
them methods of successfully overcoming
feelings of pressure. Practices like
contributing ideas to a drama performance
or adding new moves to a dance routine
can allow them to express their personality
in ways they may not have done before.
Links to improved performance in maths,
reading and writing from involvement in
performing arts are widely documented
too. Studies have found that creative and
critical thinking, problem-solving, and
reasoning increase and improve when arts
education is added to the mix.
Top Tips!
For how to
incorporate
the arts into
your home
When you read to your children, be
dramatic. Act out stories with props and
costumes. Encourage them to create
their own stories to act out for you.
Save old costumes and props for dress-up fun.
Add to the collection with clothing you no longer need:
hats, scarves, purses, shoes, and any other hand-medowns
you can find.
Introduce dance into the home. Teach your children
traditional dances you know or improvise with them.
Body movement is fun and good exercise.
Sing together. Teach the kids your favourite songs.
Expand your musical repertoire at home and in the
car. Venture into unknown musical territory so that
you and the children can hear something out of your
usual fare. This can be easily expanded by tuning
into a different radio stations and by checking out
cassettes and CDs from the public library — all for free!
