Renowned for its ability to mimic the songs of
most other birds, the Railovy is also skilled at
catching insects in flight.
From its scientific name Dicrurus forficatus is a
black-coloured bird also known as the Railovy in
Malagasy. Recognisable by its black plumage, the
feather crest on its forehead and its forked tail, this
little bird measures about 26cm from head to tail. The
female lays three white eggs, dotted brown and beige
between the months of September and December.
As is often the case in Malagasy culture, there is a
legend around the bird, telling that one night, bats
fanned a fire with their flapping wings, putting all the
animals of the forest in danger. In the morning, the
Railovy claimed to have extinguished the fire and was
crowned by the other animals, placing a diadem of
feathers on its forehead.
The Railovy lives in tropical and subtropical dry
forests, in dry savannah and humid and subtropical
lowlands. According to the IUCN, International
Union for the Conservation of Nature, the Railovy is
a species of minor concern in terms of protection but
degradation of the forests and urbanisation present a
threat to the species.
