Its biodiversity and the relief are second to
none and its geomorphology make it a unique
work of art in the world. The mountain chain
harbours a surprising biotope and exceptionally
rich fauna and flora. The massif is full of many
endemic Malagasy specimens and today is one
of Madagascar's New Protected Areas.
The Makay massif
is a mountainous
barrier 150km long
and 50km wide
that covers an area
of some 4000 km² north of
Ranohira, in the south-western
region of Madagascar, which
makes it larger than Reunion
Island alone. It is located
between the Tsiribihina river
in the north and the Mangoky
river in the south. The
geological formations of brittle
sandstone domes, criss-crossed
by rivers in the middle of
green canyons,that are several
thousands of years old. Although the climate is dry and
arid so characteristic of this region of the Centre South-
West, the massif shelters at the bottom of canyons, a
vegetation identical to those of the East, while on the
heights we observe dry seeded forests.
The Makay mountain chain has become a paradise
for hikers. However, it does not only attract trekking
lovers, but also many naturalists, archaeologists or
anthropologists.A journey in this massif allows you to
experience an adventure in a region that has barely been
explored and some of which canyons will be explored
for a long time to come. During these trekking trips, the
moments of exchange with the Bara porters are numerous
and enriching and it is advisable to stop in their villages
to get to know them before or after a trekking.
