Wheelchair
at Nga
Puna Wai
• By Matt Slaughter
CONCERNS HAVE been raised
about accessibility issues for
wheelchair users at Nga Puna
Wai.
The city council say it is aware
of these concerns and will put
in place measures to improve
accessibility.
Spreydon-Cashmere
Community Board chairwoman
Karolin Potter said wheelchair
access at the venue is not good
enough and the rest of the board
agrees.
Ms Potter brought to the board
a wheelchair user’s concerns about
having trouble seeing when they
use the wheelchair seating areas at
the venue to watch sport.
For wheelchair users, Ms Potter
said: “The fence around the field is
at their eyeline or just below it, so
you’re either looking through wire
netting or you’re looking at the
fence post along the top rail.”
Ms Potter who used to work for
the Human Rights Commission
said this is not good enough.
“My experience over the years is
that we fail and fail and fail again
on the issue of disability access.”
EFFORTS ARE under way to
secure additional funding for
the Hornby mega-facility to
Hornby community leaders
Wednesday to discuss ways
of getting additional funding
for the new
Hornby
But details
on the outcome
are staying
under wraps for now.
Hornby resident Marc Duff
said the funding is still being
worked on behind the scenes
but details will be revealed
soon.
Previously Hornby resident
Mark Peters, who was also at
the meeting on Wednesday, told
Western News the city council
needs to use some imagination to
find ways to fund the building.
City council head of recreation,
sports and events Nigel
on how the funding would be
In Brief
NO NAME FOR SUBDIVISION
The Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board has decided
to hold off from making a
decision on naming a road in
Yaldhurst Park subdivision again.
The unnamed road provides
access from Yaldhurst Park to
properties that are west of the
subdivision, known as Lot 22.
The board had deferred the
decision in November last year
due to concerns by resident Colin
Stokes. Mr Stokes says naming
the road would legitimise it but
he also says it does not have the
required stormwater provisions.
The proposed name for the road is
Jack Clarke Rd.
FUNDING GRANTED
Two community organisations
have received funding from the
Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board to help
with the operation of their
organisations. The South
Christchurch Christian
Community Trust was granted
$2000 to go towards the costs of
delivering event Carols@Westlake.
Carols@Westlake is an event
that has been running annually
for 17 years and is attended by
several thousand people each year.
Another grant of $2000 was given
to the Hornby Cricket Club to go
towards the purchase of a roller.
No new quarry consent for Fulton Hogan
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
FULTON HOGAN will
not have to apply for a new
resource consent to quarry
near Templeton – in spite of
the raft of changes made to its
application.
The three-person hearings
panel, chaired by Rob van
Voorhuysen, has decided the
changes made to the company’s
original
application do
not require a
new resource
consent.
Environment
Canterbury
and the district
Simon Moore
council called
for public
submissions on
whether the application should
be a new process due to the
changes, but these were required
to be authored by legal counsel.
The councils called for them
after Fulton Hogan made
changes to its application, which
included:
•Decreasing the total active
open area of the quarry from
40ha to a maximum of 26ha.
•Originally the application
sought to provide for up to 1500
heavy vehicle movements per
day with an average of 1050
DECISION: The changes made to Fulton Hogan’s application
to quarry near Templeton will not require it to apply for a new
resource consent.
PHOTO: MARTIN HUNTER
movements per day. But Fulton
Hogan now wishes to amend the
proposal to a daily limit of 800
heavy vehicles.
•Fulton Hogan initially
intended to develop a new
dedicated heavy vehicle access
from Jones Rd and use the
existing access off the road as
a dedicated light vehicle access
to the site. Instead it wants
to provide a “shared” heavy
and light vehicle access point,
meaning there will only be one
access point.
Upset residents wanted to
have a say on the changes.
But only the submitters who
chose to speak at the upcoming
hearing in November will get
the opportunity to have a second
say on Fulton Hogan’s amended
application.
Quarry opponent Simon
Moore was not “too worried
about” the hearings panel’s
decision to not require a new
consent from Fulton Hogan.
“We have got the opportunity
to be notified and have all the
submissions which we may not
get if they redo it,” he said.
His biggest concern is
not giving submitters the
opportunity to amend their
written submissions to reflect
the changes Fulton Hogan has
made.
On behalf of Fulton Hogan,
a lawyer has since said the
company would not be opposed
to submitters who did not
want to initially be heard at the
hearing to now be heard.
The hearing on the company’s
proposal to open a 170ha quarry
between Dawsons, Curraghs,
Jones and Maddisons Rd will be
held in November.
The only submission made on
treating the resource consent
as a new process was from legal
counsel on behalf of Fulton
Hogan.
It said: “The proposed change
in sequencing and staging of
the application does not change
the scale or intensity of the
proposed activity.”
ECan and the district council’s
legal counsel had a similar view,
saying the changes will “actually
reduce the intensity or impact of
the anticipated effects.”
WESTERN NEWS
Evidence
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
FULTON HOGAN has released
its evidence ahead of a major
hearing next month over its plans
to open its quarry in Templeton.
About 16 reports have been
received by Environment Canterbury
in support of the proposed
quarry at Dawsons, Curraghs,
Jones and Maddisons Rds.
Experts have given a wide
range of evidence on air quality,
human health, traffic effects,
noise and water quality and
water use.
Evidence has also been received
from Fulton Hogan national
environment and sustainability
manager Donald Chittock and
general manager Craig Stewart.
In his evidence, Mr Stewart
said: “Fulton Hogan has invested
a significant amount of time and
resource into selecting and developing
the proposal for Roydon
Quarry.”
He said the quarry will be
commercially viable and has a
real opportunity to showcase
exemplary quarry management
and rehabilitation. “Fulton
Hogan is committed to
continuing engagement with the
(Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton)
community board beyond the
consent process.”
released for hearing
“We want to ensure . . .
Roydon is operated as a positive
contributor to communities.”
Mr Chittock said as a longterm
neighbour, Fulton Hogan
is committed to maintaining a
good relationship with the
Templeton community.
He said the company
has made a number
of changes following
consultation with the
public.
They include no
processing of aggregates
before 7am or after 8pm
and there will be a limit
of 800 truck movements
a day.
Heavy vehicles will
also not travel on Jones
Rd (west of the access),
Dawsons Rd north of
Jones Rd, or on Jones
Rd east of Dawsons Rd
between 8pm and 6am.
Now all submitters
intending to use expert
evidence in support of
their submissions will have to
provide it by October 14.
It comes as Fulton Hogan’s
legal counsel said it would not
oppose allowing people to speak
at the hearing who initially
only opted to provide written
submissions.
But ECan said this will be
determined by the independent
hearings panel.
Templeton Residents’
Association treasurer Jolene
Eagar said it is important
the hearings process is
made as easy as possible
for people not used to
public speaking.
“These are people who
care about their town
and where they are living
and how this is going
to affect them. We have
to make sure it is not
off-putting to people,”
she said.
Meanwhile, details
on the venues for the
upcoming hearing have
been revealed.
From November 18-22,
it will be held at the West
Melton Community
Centre in the Pearce
The second week
from December 2-6, will be at
The third week from December
Concerns over access
•From page 1
“Nga Puna Wai is brand new
and this made me feel more
angry than I could possibly
discuss with you about this
issue. It’s just outrageous,” said
Ms Potter.
The board has asked city
council staff to investigate
accessibility issues at Nga Puna
Wai, including introducing space
for spectators in wheelchairs to
have an unobstructed view of the
sports fields.
Said city
council manager
of recreation
and sports
facilities David
Bailey: “We
David Bailey
value the
concerns and
have investigated
one complaint about the hockey
wheelchair spectator area not
being accessible. In this instance,
the limited access was due
to temporary fencing
incorrectly closing off the area.
The issue
was rectified on the same day.”
Ms Potter said some of the
wheelchair seating at Nga Puna
Wai is separated from the other
spectator areas with little shelter
from the elements.
Said Mr Bailey: “Within the
UNFAIR: Visibility from wheelchair areas at Nga Puna Nai has
been raised as an issue and the city council says it will take
measures to improve accessibility at the venue.
covered spectator seating for
hockey there are dedicated
spaces at the top of the stand
for people who use wheelchairs.
Fixed seats are below this
viewing platform for other
spectators. The covered seating
provides some protection from
the weather, specifically rain.
The rear and sides of the
stand provide some wind
protection.”
Ms Potter said accessibility
and inclusiveness at the facility
has to be improved.
“The premise is, is that
everything we do should be just
like an open door, it should be
built for everyone.”
Mr Bailey said the city
council’s current plans to
improve accessibility at Nga
Puna Wai will involve installing
“improved signage directing
wheelchair users to the accessible
viewing stands.”
Incredible story of escape told to
•From page 1
Said Dr Lengoc: “I made the
decision to leave because it
would not have been very safe
for me to stay. We did not know
what they (the communists)
would do to us.”
Having witnessed first-hand
the devastation of the war, the
opening of the award-winning
musical Miss Saigon this week
will mark a poignant moment
for the Vietnamese Society of
Christchurch spokesman.
As part of the lead-up to the
opening of the musical produced
by Showbiz Christchurch,
Dr Lengoc, who has lived in
Christchurch for 43 years, was
invited to share his story with
the theatre company.
Days before the end of the war,
Dr Lengoc and his wife were
two of 108 South Vietnamese
“adopted” by his wife’s employer,
American John Riordan, of
Citibank Saigon, who organised
the escape for all of his staff and
their relatives.
“He said whoever wants to go
just put their name down and he
organised the exit. Everyone was
to wait until someone knocked
on the door of your house and
you had to leave within a few
minutes. No warning at all,” Dr
Lengoc said.
The day before he was due to
go through with the escape, Dr
Lengoc married his wife at a
wedding registrar so his name
could be added to the list of
relatives seeking to escape the
country.
The couple along with the
other refugees were taken to
a secret location – a house Mr
Riordan was renting – where
they were told to wait to be
picked up and taken to Tan Son
Nhut International Airport.
While men between the ages
of 18-45 were drafted to join the
frontline of the South Vietnam
army, Dr Lengoc was exempted
due to the excellent grades he
was achieving while studying
a bachelor degree in animal
science.
Initially, the plan was for the
escapees to flee on a Boeing 727
Mr Riordan had hired from
Hong Kong.
But the pilot who was set to
take the refugees was unable
to obtain permission from the
Vietnamese authorities to land
in Saigon. Dr Lengoc could see
the window of opportunity to
escape was narrowing.
“No one knew how many more
days we would have. Once the
communists took over Saigon,
no planes would be allowed to
leave.”
But Mr Riordan quickly set up
another plan, co-ordinating with
the United States Air Force to
take the refugees to the island of
Guam.

Women and children were
given first priority, while the men
were last to leave.
Knowing the evacuation
would have to be stopped when
the communists took over, the
men had a higher risk of being
trapped in Vietnam. Dr Lengoc
recalls the fear he felt when he
was taken to the airport.
“At the time, the soldiers
understood some people were
leaving the country and were
jealous, we didn’t know how
angry they would be if they knew
we were leaving for the airport.”
The bus was stopped at least
twice by Vietnam soldiers and
police.
Not knowing what the soldiers
were thinking, Dr Lengoc
contemplated the prospect of
being shot or harmed.
“We all had our head down
so they couldn’t see through the
window. I looked down and John
(Riordan) was saying something
to the soldiers and policeman
and handed over American
dollars and then we were allowed
to leave.”
They were taken to Guam on a
Lockheed C-130 Hercules.
“As soon as the door of the
plane closed I felt so relieved,” he
said.
The refugees stayed at a
SAFE: Minh Lengoc and his late wife Dung after they arrived
safely in New Zealand in 1975 following the end of the Vietnam
War.
naval base in Guam, which was
converted into camp, for 10
days. Due to the United States
immigration laws, the group
was then taken to another army
camp in California.
Dr Lengoc described feeling
very “un-welcomed” and feared
for his safety.
Fortunately before the fall
of Saigon, he was granted a
scholarship in 1970 to study
a post-graduate diploma and
master’s degree in agriculture
and a master’s degree in animal
science at Massey University
in Palmerston North, which he
finished in 1973. During his time
there, Dr Lengoc became friends
with Jim Mann.
Mr Mann became a medical
technologist at Palmerston
North Hospital before he served
in Vietnam with the New
Zealand medical team for a year.
After a call for help, Mr Mann
arranged through the Ministry
of Foreign Affairs and Trade for
Dr Lengoc and his wife to travel
to New Zealand. The couple
stayed with Mr Mann for two
weeks in Palmerston North,
where Dr Lengoc got a job as a
garment presser.
Nine months later, he found
a job teaching at Lincoln
University where he completed
his post-graduate doctoral
degree.
He then went on to work at
biotechnology company, Life
Technologies, for 25 years before
retiring in 2012.
Dr Lengoc remained good
friends with Mr Mann and
visited him every year until he
passed away last month. In 2009
he suffered another great loss
when Mrs Lengoc passed away
following a five-year battle with
bowel cancer. But before she
died, Mrs Lengoc arranged for
her husband to marry one of
her friends, Thao, so he would
not be alone. The couple were
friends with Thao when while
studying at university. Thao had
a boyfriend at the time, but lost
contact with him following the
war and never married. Before
Mrs Lengoc died, the couple
arranged a trip to Vietnam in
2008 to reunite with Thao.
It was following the trip, Mrs
Lengoc told her husband: “You
go remarry Thao when I pass
away. Don’t remarry anyone else,
Thao is a good person.”
Dr Lengoc initially declined,
as he was preoccupied with
his wife’s failing health. But
following her death, he travelled
back to Vietnam before
organising for Thao to come to
New Zealand.
“She has been with me
since 2010, we are very happy
together,” Dr Lengoc said.
Dr Lengoc is one of 14 siblings.
Following the war, three of his
brothers who served in the South
Vietnam army were sent to reeducation
camps.
Another sister tried to escape
by boat over the South China
Sea but was never seen again.
His other siblings weren’t in the
army and weren’t harmed.
Having lived the conflict of the
war, what Dr Lengoc appreciates
most about Christchurch is the
friendliness and peacefulness
of the people. When he retired
he established the Vietnamese
Society of Christchurch which
has 363 members.
Dr Lengoc and Thao have been
invited to attend the opening of
Miss Saigon this week.
While he has not seen the
show before, he said what
women endured during the war
is often overlooked and this show
will depict this hardship.
This photo, picturing the
highly commended entry in
Christchurch City Libraries’ 2008
photo hunt. It was submitted
by Tony Bowie and shows his
mother and grandmother on
their way to shop in High St in
the late 1950s.
During the 1950s, the central
city was the prime destination
for shopping in Christchurch,
and women would don hats and
gloves for their trip into town.
The central city enjoyed this
shopping heyday in the first half
of the 20th-century, coinciding
with the peak of reliance on
public transport – first trams,
then buses. Cathedral Square
was the central hub of the
city’s transport network, which
connected the suburbs to the city
centre.
It was customary for people
to go into town to shop, and to
“take tea” in the tea rooms of the
major department stores located
on both sides of Cathedral
Square.
Community centre site blessed
• By Claire Booker
A SITE blessing and sod-turning
ceremony held last week marked
preparations for work on the
new $3.1 million St Albans
Community Centre.
Contractors are due to be onsite
by early November.
But some residents are concerned
about the high-cost for
the centre, and lack of sustainable
energy and water systems.
But St Albans Resident’s Association
board member Lynne
O’Keefe said the association is
helping to ensure these systems
are put in place. She said this is a
plan for the future.
“There obviously has been a
lot put into it [community centre]
now, but we will be working
to get that sorted,” she said.
The single-storey building will
be on the site formerly occupied
by the earthquake-damaged
centre – a block of land that
runs between Colombo St and
Caledonian Rd.
The building will have modern
timber and a glass facade with
400 sq m of floor space, including
a hall with a stage, three
meeting rooms, an office and a
kitchen.
A central gathering space
will open out on to a deck to
the north, delivering light and
A car park adjacent to the
building will provide off-street
while bike racks will be available
on both road frontages.
City council head of community
support, governance and
partnerships John Filsell said
the new centre meets a range of
community needs and will be
available to various groups.
“Shared spaces build a
As a community hub, it
will provide a base for many
groups that cater to all ages and
interests,” he said.
Many local groups are currently
operating out of makeshift
spaces around St Albans.
“With the new centre a step
closer, they can soon be under
one roof and continue to provide
support to the local community,
along with plenty of activities and
opportunities,” Mr Filsell said
Community groups are
already looking forward to utilising
the new hub, with several
indicating they plan to move
from their present premises.
A working party made up
of Papanui-Innes Community
Board members and community
representatives from groups including
the St Albans Residents
Association and the local business
association agreed on the
final floor plan.
The building is expected to
open next year.
Easement
approved for
pump station
upgrade
AN EASEMENT has been
granted at Paeroa Reserve.
It is to allow the city council
the rights to convey water and
electricity and to drain water
and sewage as part of works to
upgrade the Tara Pump Station
and to convert above-ground
wellheads at the reserve.
The Halswell-Hornby-
Riccarton Community Board
granted the Paeroa St easements
on Tuesday.
The recommendation was
moved by board chairman
Mike Mora and member Ross
McFarlane.
The easements will have
a minimum width of 3m. A
survey of the reserve will also
be necessary to create the
easements associated with the
pump station upgrade.
The upgrade associated to
the easement are to replace the
existing wellhead with an above
ground wellhead which will be
caged to meet the secure status
requirement.
The easement approved by
the board is in line with the
city council’s strategic priority
for a safe and sustainable water
supply and improved waterways.
Model trains to go on show
ANNA THOMAS is a
keen rail modeller, skilfully
creating New Zealand
prototypes.
Ms Thomas said her mother
recalls her throwing a tantrum
in Kmart when she was four
because she couldn’t have a train
set.
“I did get one later. It was an
American Santa-Fe set with a
figure-eight track and a tunnel.
I soon lost interest, probably
because it wasn’t very realistic.’’
The 26-year-old who
works for an online distributor is
keen on all things mechanical.
For two years, she has been
building a Di class diesel-electric
locomotive to haul a train of
ballast wagons.
It will include a 9m wooden
guard’s van carriage with a
ballast spreader underneath.
“I have talked to people
who knew the Di class locos.
That’s been pretty cool really,’ she
said.
The guard’s van will feature
at the Big Model Train Show
at Pioneer Recreation & Sport
Centre on Saturday and Sunday,
9.30am until 5pm.
Ms Thomas’ train modelling
is realistic. She is working with
white metal kits.
She is excited to be involved
this year’s show.
The show will feature model
Those presenting New Zealand
prototypes are always popular.
VILLA MARIA College
students have the opportunity
to put their business knowledge
into practice at the school’s
market day.
Year 10 commerce students,
including Beckenham’s
Katie McHerron, were
challenged to create a
product and food item
to sell to the college
community.
“My favourite
part was presenting
our prototype and
receiving the feedback
so we could improve
our product before
market day. I’m excited to be
selling our coffee cups and cake
mixes at the market and also
helping out our chosen charity,”
said Katie.
“We had to choose products to
sell, identify the unique selling
point, develop a business plan,
make prototypes and work
on our marketing skills,” said
year 10 student Kyra Clarkson,
whose group is called Super
Mugs.
“We decided to sell reusable
coffee cups, filled with a readyto-bake
cake mix and cookie
Katie McHerron
dough.”
Fellow student Keito Yoshida
said: “We focussed on creating
a product that was sustainable
and environmentally-friendly,
and encourages people to reuse
their cups, rather than
using disposable cups.”
Commerce is an
optional subject for
year 10 students at
Villa Maria College
and is a combination of
accounting, economics
and business studies.
It is a popular subject
choice for students who
enjoy the challenge of
the market day event.
Student Ruby Lundy said:
“It was tricky to come up with
a product that was unique
and special so that we could
attract lots of customers, but
we’re really happy with our end
product.”
The students will decide
on a charity to donate a portion
of their profits to after the
market.
Other products at the market
included reusable metal straws,
face masks and lip scrubs, bubble
tea and sweet treats.
Westlake Park
Rubbish pick up Jamboree
The Eco-Warriors have continued their good
work at Westlake Park.
Students from Oaklands School, Halswell
School and Wales Street Kindy went to
Westlake Park to participate in Westlake Park
clean-up. This event was put on in conjunction
with the Christchurch City Council.
The students enjoyed participating in the
following activities:
• Scavenger Hunt
• Design a poster mural for the park
• Rubbish pick up
• Sports
• Bird watching
• Planting seeds
and we finished with a free sausage sizzle.
Oaklands Year 5/6 day out at the Canterbury
Basketball Champs
On Monday the 12th August, a team of talented and determined Year 6 girls
competed at the Canterbury Basketball Championships.
After many hours spent practicing with Mr. Forman, the girls were ready to take
on the best of the best. Our highlight was beating West Melton 16-2. The girls
showed great speed, accurate passing, and marked up close of defense.
With narrow losses to St Josephs 8-7 and Marshlands 4-2, we were well
prepared and showed plenty of
heart and enthusiasm.
A big thank you to all the parents
who supported us for the day
and Fiona for helping coach/
manage.
We are very lucky at Oaklands
School to have Mr. Forman, who
put in endless extra hours to
give our students these extra
opportunities. Well done girls!
Hub 3’s St John Visit
What do we do when someone needs our help?
Hub 3 had Paula from St John come to visit us. She was able to teach us about
what we can do when there is an emergency and what we need to know when
calling an ambulance.
We then got to practise bandaging up
a pretend cut on our buddy using this
little saying to help remind us- pack it,
wrap it and raise it. We learnt how to
make a ‘happy snail’ with our bandage.
This helps the packing stay in place
as our bandage is easy to put on and
tight enough to keep it in place. These
are skills that we can take out into the
community and share with others.
Oaklands School Chess Club
This term the Oaklands
School Chess Club
has attended two main
Canterbury Chess
Competitions. The Individual
year level Canterbury’s
and the Social Canterbury
Chess Competition. Both
events were hosted by the
Canterbury Inter School
Chess Trust at Te Hapua,
Halswell. During this term in
week 5 Oaklands School entered the Individual Canterbury Chess Competition.
We had Xiyi Zhang (Year 8), Harrison Stewart (Year 7) Jaxson Stove (Year 6),
Jesslyn Tan (Year 5) and Didi Xue (Year 4) represent us.
Didi Xue in the Year 4 division came 1st.
Harrison Stewart in the Year 7 division came 7th
Jaxson Stove in the Year 6 division came 10th equal.
Jesslyn Tan in the Year 5 division came 15th equal.
Xiyi Zhang in the Year 8 - 10 division came in 16th.
Then in week 7 of this term Oaklands School had two teams entered in to the
Social Canterbury Chess Competition.
Representing the Year 7-8 team was Morgan Leoni (School Chess Captain),
Jennifer Xu, Melissa Randall and Rani Survase.
Representing the Year 1-6 team was Charlie Barnes, Patrick Corcoran, Jesslyn Tan
and Billy Spivey.
We are fortunate to have the wonderful assistance of Richie Christie from the
Canterbury Chess Club. A big thank you from all in the Oaklands School Chess
Club for all the assistance and coaching.
Literacy Quiz success
Congratulations to the two teams from
Oaklands School who both finished
in the top 3 in the recent South West
Literacy Quiz held at Somerfield School
last Thursday.
The Oaklands Book Ninjas finished
second with the Oaklanders team close
behind in third place. Our wonderful
reserve Milayna Gorman stepped in to
support another school who was short
of a player, demonstrating our CARE values magnificently. Congratulations to all
students who took part and big thanks to Miss McFarlane and Mrs Ward who
worked so hard to support the teams.
Year 7/8 Ellesmere Speech
Competition
Matthew Randall (Year 7) and Annabel Keylard (Year
8) represented Oaklands School at the Ellesmere
Speech Competition on Monday 2nd September.
Speech Topics
Matthew - Devices are killing our society.
Annabel - Equality in sports.
As we all know, it is very hard to get up and speak in
front of a large audience. Both Matthew and Annabel
did a fabulous job. Well done to them both!

Hip-hop
dancers to
show moves
in Sydney
• By Claire Booker
A GROUP of Papanui hiphop
dancers are due to fly out
to Sydney tomorrow for an
international competition.
Two dance crews from Zion
Studios will compete at the
World Supremacy Battleground
International Championship this
week.
Head teacher
Bronte Te Mete
said Zion aims to
create a positive
environment for
Bronte
Te Mete
people.
“We use dance as
a tool to build community
and whanau and to build
students up with life skills and
positive mechanisms,” she said.
The studio’s senior students
competed in Hamilton at the
World Supremacy Battleground
qualifier recently and took out
the secondary school-aged and
open sections.
“Both crews have been working
tirelessly to create their own
masterpieces to showcase on the
world stage,” Miss Te Mete said.
The competition runs over
four days, with different
workshops and classes around
hip-hop culture and dance.
Joshua jumps through hoops for court
BALL IS LIFE: Joshua Sinclair has written to the Halswell-
Hornby-Riccarton Community Board asking for a basketball
court to be installed at Picton Reserve.
Bid to get community board
support for practice area
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
ONE OF Joshua Sinclair’s
favourite pastimes is playing
basketball.
It’s more than just a game for
the 12-year-old from Riccarton.
Basketball
provides a social
outlet for Joshua
and he can
often be seen
practicing his
moves at Cobham
Intermediate.
But living on
Picton Ave means
Joshua has to walk
nearly 50min to
practice.
So he has
written to the
Halswell-Hornby-
Riccarton Community Board to
get a basketball court installed
in Picton Reserve.
In a heart-warming letter,
Joshua describes basketball as
having a “magical power” to
bring people together.
He said basketball gets
people together from a range of
backgrounds for some fresh air
and fitness work.
Joshua has only been
interested in basketball for
‘Basketball still
has a magical
power to
bring people
together and
have fun’
– Joshua Sinclair
the past year, but he has a real
passion for sport, playing cricket
and rugby for his school and
clubs.
He is due to start at
Christchurch Boys’ High
next year, and Joshua’s goal is
to be selected
to represent
the school in
basketball.
His mother
Debra supported
Joshua’s letter
and is happy
he took the
time to write
to the board
and make a
difference to his
community.
She said the
closest basketball
court at Wharenui School is
cracked and run-down, and it
would be ideal to have a court
nearby.
Board chairman Mike Mora
said it was lovely to see a
handwritten letter from a
young person bringing their
concerns to the community
board.
The letter has been passed
on to city council staff for
consideration.
Sarah Taylor – Of course
the city council should have
approved this facility and glad
they saw sense and listened to
the residents rather than the
community board members
who voted against it. There’s no
way as a resident in Riccarton
I’ll be putting a tick beside either
Broughton or Chu on my voting
paper.
They’ve just shown me that
they don’t listen to residents
views and instead follow their
own personal agendas and how
can I trust them not to do the
same again? Can’t wait for it to
be built.
Dianne Downward –
Hornby residents have victory
but at what cost? Kyle Park
is an old landfill or rubbish
dump that is contaminated
with toxic materials and gas –
methane is produced as rubbish
decomposes. A conservative
estimate of how much it will
cost to make the land safe to
build on is $5 million to $10
million if all goes well, as they
cannot know the extent of the
problem until they start. If they
find the problem is worse than
expected, it could cause more
delays and eat up a lot more of
the budget just to get the land fit
to build on.
Let’s say that it cost $10
million to remediate the land,
that leaves $27 million to build
the actual facility. What are
the residents willing to cut
from the plan to meet the new
budget?
Are they willing to have
their rates (Hornby residents)
increased to fund the extra cost
of making the land safe to build
on?
Do they expect road repairs
and other facilities across
Christchurch to be put on hold
to pay for the extra cost?
Are those that fought for
Denton Park to remain the way
it is (which also caused delays)
and other Hornby residents,
aware of all these extra costs to
have the facility built on Kyle
Park?
I have no emotional
connection to Denton Park
so it is easy for me to say that
the mega-facility should be
built there, where there is no
contamination and is next door
to Kyle Park.
The rugby fields could
easily be transferred to Kyle
Park.
I want Hornby to have this
facility but I don’t want my
rates to increase to pay for this
decision.
Making yesterday's
best performance into today’s
new baseline is how legends
roll. Never settle. Never stop.
Top young landscaper awarded
GEORGE TROWER has been
named young landscaper of the
Mr Trower, who works at
Fendalton’s Goom Landscapes
recognised for his innovation,
communication, leadership,
career development and
construction abilities.
“It was such an honour to
pick the award up and receive
recognition from across the
industry, especially considering
the calibre of the other finalists,”
the Lincoln University graduate
said.
“I was so humbled that the
team at Goom seemed to be
as excited about my individual
award as they were the numerous
awards they received on the
night.”
Mr Trower will now progresses
to the young horticulturist of the
year awards, in which finalists
across six industries battle it out
for top honours.
Goom Landscapes is a highly
regarded landscape design and
construction firm established
more than 35 years ago.
The nationally recognised
landscape design, construction,
horticulture and maintenance.
Said Goom Landscapes
director Tim Goom: “We take
enormous pride as a team in
completing every project to
the highest standard, so to gain
national recognition, not to
mention armloads of awards, is
deeply gratifying.”
The company entered four
projects in both the design
and construction categories. It
received four gold medals for
construction and three gold and
a silver medal for design.
In addition to these medals,
Little honoured for dedication to rowing
SPORT
BURNSIDE HIGH School
rowing coach Jim Little’s
six-decade involvement with
rowing has been rewarded
with life membership of the
Canterbury Rowing Association.
The 75-year-old is passionate
about sculling and is currently
coaching Burnside under-17
single-sculler Theo Giannakogiorgos
to the Maadi Cup where
he finished fourth earlier this
year.
Little commenced rowing in
the 1950s with Shirley Boys’
High School as a 16-year-old.
He has been a member of the
Union Rowing Club ever since
where he is a life member and
club patron.
He has trained as a member
of the 1964 NZ Tokyo Olympic
crew.
Unfortunately, he was one of
two reserves on race day with the
eight finishing in 11th.
He competed for Canterbury
in the inter-provincial eights.
He had been rowing double
and singles and was third in
the premier (then senior class)
singles at the 1963 national
championships.
Little rowed in a coxless pair
for three years with Ron Satherley
and after several attempts in
both the coxless pair and later
a coxed pair, the combination
finished second each time in the
premier event to Wybo Veldman
and the late Warren Cole.
In his last season, marred by
an appendix operation, he and
Tim Armstrong finished third
in the premier double sculls with
no real training behind them.
After a 10-year break Little
turned to coaching focusing and
developing a youth eight within
the URC Club.
He took another brief break
after this stint then returned
in October 1985 looking after
Shirley Boys’ High rowing and
again with URC.
Little was involved with several
age-group New Zealand crews.
Little has coached URC athletes
GIRLS & BOYS BASKETBALL 2019
Basketball New Zealand Nationals
Palmerston North October 2019
Hornby High School is proud to be sending
two Hornby High School basketball
teams (both boys and girls) to represent
our community, families and school at
the Basketball New Zealand National
Championships held in Palmerston North.
The national tournament will provide an
opportunity for these players to develop
their own play and compete at the highest
available for their age group. This will allow
them to develop their basketball skills and
learn how to adapt to the variety of playing
styles that they will experience from different
teams throughout New Zealand.
This is the first time Hornby High School
basketball teams have qualified for a national
tournament. Both teams qualified at the
South Island Secondary Premierships held
in Greymouth, the Hornby High School Boys’
team finishing 4th place, and the Hornby High
School girls’ team finishing in 5th place. This
is the next step in a basketball programme
which started 11 years ago and has grown to
include both boys and girls teams in each age
group.
Both teams are very fortunate to be in the
capable hands of experienced coaches,
the Boys’ Team with James Harris, and the
Girls Team with Sam Hawkins. Both bring
a wealth of knowledge to their teams and
are able to encourage players and set high
expectations that encourage them to play at
their best. Both coaches are supported by
assistant coaches. The boys team assistant
coach is Vinnie Wallace, a Hornby 24-7 youth
worker with Hope Youth, a great role model
and mentor in the school. He is involved in
multiple sports at Hornby High School and
has taken up the assistant coach role for the
Boys basketball team. Annabelle Simpson
works with the Girls team, with whom she
helps deliver a strong balance within the team
helping build team work and confidence.
The team managers are Emma Geldard
(Boys’ Manager) and Sarah Handley (Girls’
manager). They help ensure the wellbeing
of the players while they are away, assisting
them to manage any niggles and injuries.
ensuring the players
have access to
medical treatment
if necessary, and
generally keeping
everything on track for
the teams.
Preparations for these
tournaments have
been intense and our
players are developing
into a strong unit. We
would like to take this
opportunity to thank
Mark Peters Standing for Council and Community Board - Hornby Ward
Paid Advertising Feature
Hi, I’m Mark Peters, and I am standing for
Council and Community Board for the Hornby
Ward.
Hornby needs a clear strong voice to
represent our community well at Council to
ensure our communities are heard and that we
get what we need.
I’m proud to live in Hornby with my family.
I’m a Land Surveyor by trade and want to use
my skills to give back to the Community that
offers my family so much.
When Denton Park needed saving a couple
of years ago, I stepped up and pulled together
the Hornby sports clubs and a determined
group of locals, successfully forcing the
Council to move on, saving Denton Park.
After the Denton Park campaign, we decided
not to waste the unity that came from that
campaign and formed the Greater Hornby
Residents Association that superbly represents
Hornby issues to Council.
When the Community Board shocked us
with a vote not to proceed with the new Kyle
Park facility, I pulled together the petition to
take on the Hikoi to Council, winning their
support to proceed and work with us to find
extra funding.
I will represent Hornby clearly and strongly
on Council continuing to listen to you and
ensuring you are heard. We must ensure rates
are affordable, that our spending priorities
are right and that we focus on the basics first
before the nice to haves.
Our Council has no place for Party Politics.
I’m a true independent, Vote Mark Peters for
Council & Community Board.
Authorised by Mark Peters, 6 Glenora Place, Hornby, Christchurch.
Megan Hands Standing for Environment Canterbury - Christchurch West Ōpuna
As an environmental consultant I have
an intimate understanding of the progress
made and the work to be done to improve our
water quality in Canterbury. As a new mum,
I want our region to be the best place for
young families like my own to live, work and
explore. I have a Bachelor of Environmental
Management and Planning, and qualifications
in Nutrient Management and Agricultural
Greenhouse Gas Emissions. I currently Cochair
the Selwyn Te Waihora Zone Committee
and am a member of the Institute of Directors.
Environment Canterbury needs collaborative
decision makers who use evidence, science
and responsible spending to sustain our
region’s economic growth and protect our
environment. I fundamentally believe that
economic growth and environmental protection
can and must go together and that we should
all be able to enjoy our great outdoors. With
me as your Councillor you have a commitment
to;
1. Ensuring a healthy environment, safe
drinking water and clean air while supporting
our regional economy.
2. Ensuring Biodiversity is protected,
maintained and enhanced.
3. Affordable and accessible public
transport that aids the goal of a Carbon Zero
Christchurch. I am open minded about who is
best placed to manage this.
4. Ensuring your ratepayer money is
invested prudently.
I am a genuinely independent candidate
meaning you will get a Councillor committed
to what is best for our grassroots Canterbury
community and environment with a focus on
ECan’s core business. I need your vote and
would be honoured to be your ECan councillor
for Christchurch West.
Authorised by Megan Hands, 229 Hacketts Road, Darfield, Christchurch.
Anne Galloway Standing for Councillor - Halswell Ward
Kia ora koutou,
Engagement. Empowerment. Equity.
Three words that describe what I have achieved
as the Ward Councillor representing Halswell.
Over the last almost three years I have...
• Fought for Halswell to have the facilities,
amenity and levels of service reflective of the
rates revenue generated from this Ward and
equitable access to these.
• Engaged regularly with key Halswell residents
in order to stay informed about current local
issues.
• Addressed concerns raised by residents and
facilitated action in response to these
• Established a Student Council - primary aged
children from local schools are learning about
democratic processes and how to engage with
them successfully . With the support of CCC
Staff they have achieved positive outcomes for
their community (The Student Council has won
a national award for the Community Board).I
have prioritised building strong, collaborative,
respectful relationships with Council colleagues
and CCC Staff. Valuing the work that fellow
Councillors and Staff do and appreciating the
results they achieve despite the challenges
they face has ensured action and results for the
people of Halswell.
If I have the privilege to represent you for the
next three years I will continue to...
• Remove chlorine from our drinking water
• Improve and protect our waterways and
biodiversity
• Strengthen civics education and encourage
active citizenship
• Advocate speed limits in suburban streets
especially around schools
• Provide resource for minor safety initiatives(eg
pedestrian islands) identified by the community
• Strengthen the Neighbourhood Support
network to enhance community sense of safety
• Address traffic congestion advocating for free
buses for those under 18yrs
• Continue to battle for the lowest possible rates
Sam MacDonald Standing for Councillor - Waimairi Ward
Does our community get value for money
from the $27 million in rates we pay each
year? Our roads, parks and water supply need
improving, and we cannot afford more rate
rises.
As the Chairman of our local Community
Board, I enjoy working on everyday issues and
local projects. But the big problems we face
– continuous rate rises, ballooning debt and
deferred maintenance – are what I hear most
about, and those problems can only be solved
from the Council table.
I am the only Council candidate running in the
Waimairi Ward who lives and pays rates in our
Ward, I understand our local issues.
My Community Board experience here in
the Waimairi Ward and work as a Chartered
Accountant has given me both the local
knowledge and professional skills to get better
value for your ratepayer funds. I am asking for
your vote to be your Councillor. As always, feel
free to contact me at any time –
table, vote Sam MacDonald.
Shirish Paranjape Standing for Community Board - Waimairi Ward
Dear Waimairi resident,
Would you vote for someone residing in
Auckland to be the Mayor of Christchurch? Of
course not! The same applies for electing your
Waimairi Community Board member.
I am a LOCAL - I live and pay rates in
Waimairi ward, and have done for over 17
years. I am seeking re-election as your
Community Board member for Waimairi Ward.
Having completed my first term, I can say I
have certainly enjoyed the role and was able
to make a positive contribution. In particular,
I immensely cherish the people-interaction
aspect which this role entails, as well as being
able to put rate-payers’ money to good use –
for community groups as well as individuals;
and for small and big projects which make
our neighbourhood a better place to live for
everyone.
Over the past weeks, I have walked the
streets of Waimairi ward and met many of you.
If I could not meet you, you would have found
my election flyer near your front door or in your
letter-box.
My sincere promise is that I will be your voice,
your eyes and ears; for any and every matter,
whether Council-related or other. I will work with
the same passion, integrity, transparency and
enthusiasm that I have demonstrated in the
past years, and to continue to make a positive
difference in the lives of people around me.
PLEASE VOTE FOR ME as your Waimairi
Community Board member.
Thanks in advance,
Ross McFarlane Standing for Community Board - Halswell Ward
Paid Advertising Feature
Our COmmunity - my PriOrity
As a member of the Halswell Residents
Association for 18years and the Halswell
River Rating District Liaison Committee I
again seek your support and vote to continue
as your Halswell ward Community Board
Representative.
Growth is our major issue and if
uncoordinated will diminish the level of
amenity our ward enjoys and it is this amenity
that makes it the attractive and accessible
environment we proudly call home. With the
population now approaching 28500 and a
diverse mix of culture now calling Halswell
home, protection of this is a focus area for me.
Aidanfield, Awatea, Halswell, Hoon Hay,
Kennedy’s Bush, Knights Stream, Longhurst,
Oaklands, Westlake, Westmorland, Wigram
and rural sectors along with another 10+ new
subdivisions being developed will increase our
population beyond the 32000 estimated for
2023. We are the largest Ward & Community
Board in New Zealand.
My strengths are knowledge of this growth,
planning, transport and rating policies for
urban and rural areas. Having made many
past submissions to ECAN & Council I intend
to ensure the community is informed and
involved in processes affecting our immediate
environment, and advocate for the best
outcomes for residents of the Halswell Ward.
Sporting facilities, recreational fields,
parks, natural springs, rivers, the port hills,
quarry, bike trails, summit road and the new
stormwater wetlands are precious to us all and
allow us to recreate in these areas be it active
or passive.
Please contact me anytime about anything
Aaron Campbell Standing for Environment Canterbury - Christchurch West Ōpuna
As an independent candidate for ECan in
Christchurch West- Ōpuna, I’m standing up
for the future of water and our quality of life in
Canterbury.
Cantabrians have been clear – we don’t want
our precious, pure water given away or polluted
with nitrates.
As an independent, I’ve been clear from the
start about what motivates me and what my
goals are:
· I’m a co-founding member of Aotearoa
Water Action, formed to challenge ECan
granting consents in Belfast for water bottling.
· Nitrates in groundwater are a looming
disaster for Christchurch and toxic levels are
being recorded in rural Canterbury. ECan
has enabled irrigation, dairy intensification on
unsuitable soils.
· Last year, I spoke out against the lobbying
of government by Water NZ seeking mandatory/
permanent chlorination and a new water
regulator. The CCC quit Water NZ three weeks
later.
· ECan has overseen falling bus patronage
and funding cuts, despite population growth. We
need an accessible, affordable, zero-emission
network. Everyone benefits when more people
use public transport.
I grew up on a sheep farm so I’m far from
anti-farming. It is the responsibility of ECan to
push for substantive change to the RMA, to
protect our water and soils, the rural economy
and restore biodiversity.
As a company director, community board
member and business mentor I have a solid
background in governance and financial
management.
I’ve spoken out against water bottling,
chlorination, nuisance quarry dust and I have
supported measures reducing congestion,
improving accessibility (disability) and promoting
public transport.
Lianne Dalziel Christchurch Mayor - Standing for re-election
Re-elect Lianne Dalziel Mayor
“I love Christchurch and am confident about our
future. With my experience and inclusive style
of leadership, we can tackle any challenges that
lie ahead, while seizing every opportunity that
comes our way.”
It is vital we keep the momentum going.
My immediate priorities are:
Water: Investment in our infrastructure will
deliver pure water safely to your home. I
will fight Government-imposed mandatory
chlorination.
Rates: I will bring rates rises down while
ensuring continued infrastructure investment,
and balancing council debt and inflation.
Central City: A vibrant city centre is essential.
Having secured $300m for Christchurch, the
stadium will be a multi-use facility. I will continue
to back the developers leading the way.
Sustainability: I am committed to reducing our
city’s carbon footprint, and helping communities
prepare for the impacts of climate change.
Eastern Alliance: An alliance of contractors will
deliver a fully integrated programme of works
across the east, fixing the roads, footpaths and
pipes and building stopbanks.
Do it once, do it right.
Peter Ballantyne Standing for Canterbury District Health Board
Peter has considerable experience in the
health sector having served as Deputy Chair of
the Canterbury District Health Board and Chair
of the West Coast District Health Board.
Peter believes the health board has worked
tirelessly to meet the needs of Cantabrians,
but has been constrained by lack of funding
.Peter considers that he is well placed to
advocate strongly for equitable funding for our
health needs in Canterbury. This, combined
with efficiencies in service, will enable more
funds to be available to meet the increased
demands of health issues such as mental
health, cancer and elective surgery in order to
ensure that our communities get well, stay well
and live well closer to home. Addressing the
increasing needs of our ageing population is
a continuing demand on our health services.
There is also need to remove the capital
charge, and progress the rate of our facility
rebuilds to ensure our people receive timely
and appropriate treatment in modern hospital
facilities. He is very conscious of the safety and
wellbeing of our health workforce which has
been operating under tremendous pressure
since the earthquakes while continuing to
maintain high standards of service.
Peter was previously a partner in the
international consulting firm Deloitte. He
currently serves on the CDHB Quality, Finance,
Audit, and Risk Committee and on the
University of Canterbury Council.
A life long Cantabrian, Peter is a greatgrandson
of John Ballantyne, founder of
Ballantynes Department Store. Peter’s wife
Claire worked as a registered nurse with
the CDHB and his daughter is a Consultant
Geriatrician. With two sons, an engineer and a
film director, Peter’s leisure time is spent with
family, grandchildren and sailing.
John Minto Standing for Christchurch Mayor
I am standing as a KOA (Keep our Assets
Canterbury) candidate for mayor because we
want a future for Christchurch which makes
sense.
The city faces three big challenges: a
climate emergency, a water supply threatened
by contaminants and many people struggling
on poverty incomes without dignity or selfrespect.
Our policies are to reduce greenhouse
gas emissions with free and frequent public
transport; provide a local zone for Canterbury
businesses and co-operatives in the city
centre; rebuild the 400 council rental homes
destroyed in the earthquakes; future-proof
our water supply and develop a plan for
swimmable rivers; rate increases kept to the
rate of inflation and a minimum of the living
wage for all council work.
As well as significantly reducing our
greenhouse gas emissions, fare-free public
transport will create a more cohesive, less
divided city as people mix and mingle on
modern, low-emission buses with free wifi.
It will also save families approximately four
weeks pay per year in transport costs which
will be spent in the local economy giving a
boost to local businesses and co-operatives.
This policy will not increase rates because
it will be paid for from existing government
budgets by rebalancing transport funding away
from new roads in favour of public transport.
These policies will improve our lives while
saving the council money. More details are at
I am fully committed to giving all members
of our communities the strong, positive
representation they deserve.
I have been an elected member since 2013.
In this time, I have held a variety of positions,
including my daily work with Women’s Refuge
Local Government Young Elected Members
Board, Local Government Elected Member
These experiences have given me the
opportunity to continue to develop the
leadership and mediation skills we need
around the table within the CDHB for us to
make positive steps forward for the entire
Canterbury region.
I am a proactive, results-focussed candidate
with the enthusiasm and energy needed to
effect positive change.
As your elected representative I aim to
strongly advocate for a parking solution for
Christchurch Hospital, future focussed decision
We must protect and regenerate our precious
water resources and our natural heritage, and
find ways to lessen climate change and deal
with climate disruption.
We must improve public transport and
increase its use around the city.
We need the CCC and ECan to work together
much more constructively than has recently
been the case.
I’m a team player who has worked for many
years on environmental issues with a wide
range of communities. We’ve solved problems
and reached common goals by working together
to make things happen. I’d like to see ECan
working well with communities and with other
councils to progress action on the issues above.
I have a BSc in Botany, A masters in Parks
and Recreation Management and a PhD in
social science. For seven years I worked at
Manaaki Whenua/ Landcare Research as a
social researcher where I worked with science
teams looking at a range of environmental
issues. My work focused on helping
communities to work together to understand
the science, understand their problems and to
develop solutions that were good for them and
good for the local environment. I wanted to work
more directly on these issues that I kept seeing,
so I left, set up my own business and began
working in my own community.
Since the earthquakes, I been working in
I want to be part of a new Environment
Canterbury that secures better outcomes for
our land and water, and all that call our region
home.
It is achievable if those at the council table
work together, from both rural and urban
communities, to face the challenges we have
and explore land use opportunities that can
regenerate our soil, enhance our water quality,
and help restore our native birds, plants and
fish.
Born and raised in here in Ōtautahi, I care
deeply about our whenua and as a father
I am driven to protect and enhance our
unique natural and cultural heritage for future
generations to enjoy. Having Ngāi Tahu,
For the past 20 years, I have been working
CDHB. I am proud to say I’m the chair of the
CCC Disabilities Working Group. I am married
with three children and we live here in the ward.
I also own a small business that employs a
handful of people and helps with growing the
Event & Tourism industry in Christchurch.
I have met many of you in my time as an
elected member as I’m always contactable and
I do my best to get good outcomes for our ward
and the hard working rate payers that live here.
My voting record shows I’ve been true to my
word on a number of issues (traffic lights, rates,
chlorine) and will speak up when something
isn’t right. I’m outcome focused and constantly
look for the best value for your money.
The next three years requires a council
that is going to be focused on the big issues.
Firstly we have to keep rates down and I have
not supported the recent huge increases. We
have to fix our roads and get them back to pre
quake quality within the next three years, not
the planned 30 years. Finally we have to make
sure the Christchurch economy is in a strong
position to deliver a lifestyle we can aspire to for
all residents.
I have always tried to be available to the
residents of Harewood so if you ever have
issues please contact me by emailing:
Darryll Park Standing for Christchurch Mayor
Hello there, I am Darryll Park, a proud
Cantabrian, and extremely passionate about this,
our city of Christchurch.
I have lived and worked in and around
Christchurch all of my life.
In the past I was the CEO of Christchurch
& Canterbury Marketing Ltd, and I helped
to reposition Tourism under the government
Tourism 2010 Strategy, as well as past board
member of Civil Aviation Authority & Aviation
Security Services, two government agencies and
was employed as Air NZ South Island Manager
until 1998.
Nowadays I am the co-owner of Oxford
Management Services, a property development
and management company supporting
hospitality, Chair of Mondo Travel Group, and a
Director of the Canterbury Rugby Union and the
Crusaders.
What I’m standing for
I am standing as a Mayoralty candidate for
Christchurch in the upcoming elections. I am
campaigning to ‘Move Christchurch Forward’,
with a focus on common sense, a back to basics
approach and better ways to move us forward.
Why am I doing this?
Quite simply, I want to restore public trust in
Christchurch’s local leadership and with your
help, do what’s needed to be done to make
Christchurch, New Zealand’s most liveable city.
This will mean being accountable and
transparent to you, the voter, ratepayer, resident
and business community. Our key areas of
focus are rates, water, infrastructure, tourism,
sustainability, institutions and events, crime and
communities. I will be revealing our policies over
the coming weeks.
There is much to be done, and if elected, I will
stand aside from my current business interests
and governance roles to ensure my focus on this
city is absolute.
Thank you for your interest, and if you want to
help move Christchurch forward, I look forward
to your vote.
Sweet vegan classics from Asia
Try a vegan take on
some Asian classics
Indonesian crumpets
Makes 20
Ingredients
250ml (1 cup) soy or coconut
milk
7g sachet dried active yeast
1 tsp coconut sugar
300g (2 cups) plain flour
2 tsp bicarbonate of soda
1 tsp sea salt
1 tsp vanilla powder
Olive oil or vegan butter, for
greasing
Suggested toppings:
Coconut yoghurt, vegan butter,
pure maple syrup, fresh berries,
shredded basil leaves, dried
edible flowers, hemp seeds, icing
sugar.
Directions
Gently warm the soy or
coconut milk and 250ml (one
cup) of water in a saucepan
over low heat until just warmed
through (don’t warm the liquid
too much or you will kill your
yeast). Pour the liquid into a
bowl and add the dried yeast
and sugar. Set aside in a warm
place for 15min or until the
surface starts to foam. Sift the
flour, bicarbonate of soda, salt
and vanilla into a large bowl.
Add the yeast mixture and stir to
combine. Place a clean damp tea
towel over the mixing bowl and
set aside for 35-40min or until
the mixture is risen and bubbly.
Heat the oven to 100 deg C
fan-forced. Lightly grease a large
frying pan and set over mediumhigh
heat, then lightly grease a
few egg rings and place them in
the pan.
Stir the mixture again – it
should look like thick, bubbly
pancake batter. Add 60-125ml
(¼ cup-½ cup) more water to
reach the desired consistency if
necessary.
Spoon two to three
tablespoons of the mixture into
each egg ring. Cook for 2min
or until the tops are completely
covered in bubbles and the
batter is dry. Remove the egg
rings, transfer the crumpets
to a heatproof plate and keep
warm in the oven. Repeat with
the remaining mixture to make
about 20 crumpets.
Serve the warm crumpets with
your favourite toppings.
Any leftover crumpets will
keep in an airtight container in
the fridge for two to three days
or in the freezer for up to two
weeks.
Chana masala
Serves 2
Ingredients
2 Tbsp avocado oil
1 onion, diced
400g can whole tomatoes
400g can chickpeas, drained and
rinsed (see tip)
2 tsp coconut sugar
2 Tbsp freshly squeezed lemon
juice, plus lemon wedges to serve
Sea salt
Chopped coriander leaves, to
serve
Steamed basmati rice or garlic
Naan to serve
Masala curry paste
2-3 long red chillies, roughly
chopped
3 garlic cloves, roughly chopped
2 tsp ground cumin
2-3cm piece of ginger, roughly
chopped
1 tsp ground turmeric
1/2 tsp sea salt
1 tsp black peppercorns
1 tsp garam masala
1 tsp ground coriander
1 tsp brown mustard seeds
Directions
Using a large mortar and
pestle, pound the masala curry
paste ingredients for about
10min or until you have a
smooth paste (alternatively,
you can use a small food
processor.)
Heat a saucepan over medium
heat, add the oil and curry paste
and saute for 30sec.
Add the onion and saute for
2min, then stir through the
tomatoes and chickpeas.
Reduce the heat to low and
simmer for 30min or until
reduced to a thick curry.
Remove the pan from the heat,
stir through the sugar and lemon
juice, then taste and add a little
salt, if necessary.
Sprinkle the chana masala
with coriander and serve with
steamed basmati rice or garlic
naan on the side and lemon
wedges for squeezing over.
Tip: Keep your chickpea liquid
(aquafaba) to make sriracha
mayo or caesar dressing.
SENIOR LIVING
WESTERN NEWS
Hydrate to elevate
We all know drinking water is important, but the
majority of us simply don’t drink enough even though
we know it makes us feel great when we do. We look
at the benefits and motivate you to drink more with a
few tips on how to make it just a little more palatable.
With over a quarter of Kiwis
consuming less than two glasses of
water a day and only 5% drinking
more than the recommended eight, the
message obviously hasn’t hit home on
the importance of hydrating our body.
A recent survey conducted by
SodaStream found that Cantabrians
are particularly guilty when it comes to
their water intake.
With 82% drinking less than six
glasses of water a day, but with over 85%
admitting they feel healthier when they
drink more water, something needs to
be done to bridge the gap in terms of
what we know to be true and what we’re
actually doing about it.
This same survey revealed that
although 41% of us limit how many soft
drinks we consume due to our concerns
over sugar content, the same number
of people said tea or coffee is this their
number one drink of choice.
Some people even believe that the
water consumed in their cup of Joe
constitutes part of their water intake.
This is a fallacy.
As caffeine actually dehydrates us, as
does alcohol too, it means we need to
drink even more water to compensate.
Not so surprisingly the reason we
don’t drink nearly enough water is that
we simply forget. Now with apps you
can download direct to your smart
phone, there are no more excuses.
Further studies proved that people
who had a SodaStream machine in their
homes were more likely to drink more
water.
In fact, the study showed that people
drank 30% more water.
For those of us who aren’t used to
drinking water like it’s going
out of fashion, there are plenty of ways
to increase the fun factor while still
being healthy.
After
Before
By simply turning tap water into sparkling water with a
SodaStream machine and adding a splash of fresh lemon juice
or naturally squeezed fruit juice, is bound to have a positive
impact on our health and wellbeing.
SENIOR LIVING
Cleansed and cured?
Many common health problems can
all be easily solved with one simple
approach according to a leading New
Zealand Medical Herbalist Brett Elliott.
He found in his clinical practice that
most of his clients have similar common
health complaints and that it all could be
traced back to digestive disorders. Did
you know up to 50% of the population
suffer from common health conditions
like; chronic constipation, acid reflux,
bloating, gas, ulcers, irritable bowel
syndrome, crohn’s disease, coeliac
disease, haemorrhoids, gallstones,
cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure,
abdominal weight gain, skin complaints
and many more and can all come back to
a poor digestive system.
He wanted to find a simple solution
everyone could use to support their
bodies natural healing without the side
effects of pharmaceutical medications
that often only ease or cover the
symptoms without healing as well as
often having many side effects. Brett
knew everything in the body depends on
the digestive system working properly
and so went about developing “The
Ultimate Herbal Detox Body Cleanse
Program” a simple to use two week
program. It not only supports the whole
digestive system but also helps cleanse
the entire body of toxins and parasites.
The program contains four different
all herb formulas all in capsule form
that need to be taken twice daily. These
capsules can be blended into a smoothie
if you prefer. Colon-aid is designed to
support a healthy bowel movement,
increases the secretion of gastric
juices and bile and promote appetite
and digestion. Digez-aid soothes and
stimulates healthy
digestion and
absorption of
vital nutrients.
Sym-lax is a
bulking fibre to
cleanse and heal
the intestines
and bowels. It
also makes you
feel less hungry.
Liva-food is the
final nutrient
rich formula to
support a healthy
liver function.
It supports
detoxing the
body of toxins
and heavy
metals.
The program supports the bodies’
organs to do their job. The formulas are
New Zealand made and contain a total
of 24 high potency herbs making it quite
possibly the most comprehensive “do
it yourself ” herbal detox body cleanse
program in the world. Brett has refined
the formula over 20 years and has now
sold over 100, 000 kits world-wide. He
regularly receives incredible feedback
from users with many re-doing the
program once or twice yearly.
With toxic overload and many
diseases sky-rockerting now is the
time to make a positive change by
cleansing, nourishing and helping build
your body to a better health.
CLEANSED AND CURED?
Did you know around 50% of
the population suffer from
common health problems
that may be easily
eliminated by restoring
healthy body function?
Knowing this N.Z.
leading medical herbalist
“Brett Elliott” wanted to find
a simple solution everyone
could use. He developed “The
Ultimate Herbal Detox Body Cleanse
Program” to support cleansing the
body of stored waste matter, toxins, parasites & heavy
metals etc. Brett also knew he needed to support the vital
organ function so health could be restored & so included
natural herbs in the program to achieve this. Brett has
