MESSAGE FROM THE
CHANCELLOR
Dear Faculty, Students and Staff,
The 2019-20 academic year is well underway, and I write to reaffirm
the university’s commitment to providing a welcoming, safe and secure
environment for our students, employees, visitors and community
partners. We share a collective responsibility for a cultural climate
free from acts or threats of violence, criminal victimization and other
situations that conflict with our aspirations for a respectful environment
for all.
To that end, I am pleased to present UIC’s 2018-2019 Annual Security
and Fire Safety Report, as part of our commitment to comply with the
Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime
Statistics Act, as amended by the Violence Against Women Act, (20
USC § 1092(f); 34 CFR 668.46). The report was completed by the Office
of Preparedness and Response and is part of the university’s ongoing
effort to inform you about the safety and security programs and services
available to all members of our community. I encourage you to read
this report carefully, use the information it provides as a guide for safe
practices on- and off-campus, and be observant and supportive of each
other.
Within UIC’s diverse community, which forms the foundation of our
institutional character, programs are continuously reviewed and changes
are often recommended and implemented to further strengthen our
policies, procedures, and systems providing the safest atmosphere
both in and out of the classroom. UIC’s Office of Preparedness and
Response remains steadfast in advancing the necessary systems for
prevention, protection, and infrastructure to monitor the university
climate and identify areas for improvement.
The safety and wellbeing of everyone at UIC is our foremost concern.
We demonstrate this through our ongoing prevention and awareness
programs to eliminate activity contrary to our security, and to encourage
students and employees to be responsible for both their own safety and
the safety of others. We are continuously re-examining our public safety
environment, enabling us to better prevent and address crime, amplify
our communications and increase the availability of effective support
services for the university community. Over the last year, I have tasked
campus leaders to review our policies and procedures, help streamline
our responses and create a more effective and coordinated culture of
prevention, reporting and accountability.
Please consider participating in the prevention and educational
programs offered at UIC. By acting responsibly, caring for community
members and remaining vigilant, we can maintain our university as a
safe, secure and resilient place in which we learn, live and work.
Thank you for taking the time to read this material and please put
what you learn into action. UIC is undergoing a tremendous period of
growing momentum, increasing enrollment and new construction and
renovation across the university. This is an exciting time to be part of
this community, and by being mindful of each other and the respect and
security of our diverse culture, we will thrive together.
