INSIDER KNOWLEDGE:
MAURA MARVAO
The agent for Phillips
auction house in Portugal
and Spain flits between
Brazil, Madrid, London
and New York, but was
born and raised—and still
has her home—in Porto.
HOW DO YOU SEE
THE CITY’S RECENT
DEVELOPMENT?
Many things have changed
for the better. The city center
was very decadent before,
and its recovery has been
very positive. Tourism and
foreign investment have
obviously helped. We need
to be a little bit careful with
tourism, and hopefully we
can learn from other cities’
mistakes. Good things in
excess become bad things!
DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE
CULTURAL HOTSPOT IN THE
CITY? I love the Serralves
Foundation (serralves.pt),
a masterpiece by Porto’s
famous architect Álvaro
Siza. There’s a brand new
section inside the property,
the Casa do Cinema—it’s
focused on Portuguese
director Manoel de
Oliveira, but open to films
from all over the world.
The Quinta do Vallado
vineyard hotel in the
Douro Valley
AND A FAVOURITE CHILL-
OUT SPOT? The Parque da
Cidade in Foz, one of the
biggest city parks in Europe.
There are lakes, and it ends
at the seaside. It‘s perfect
for running, yoga, picnics.
