PRESIDENT’S REPORT
I feel privileged to be the President of the Committee of Management for Carinya and to once again present my
report for 2018/19.
Firstly, I would like to congratulate Cindy, our CEO, on another highly successful year for Carinya due to her
leadership and sound financial management. Cindy is dedicated and passionate about her role, continually
striving for improvement while identifying challenges and managing Aged Care reforms, in addition to this year’s
Royal Commission into Aged Care. Cindy is supported by an energetic, motivated and skilled staff, and together
they provide a leading facility in Aged Care for the Korumburra and District Community. Thank you to you all.
To our Committee members, Rod Abbott, Rob Francis, Duncan Davies, Max Hall, Frank Preston, Lyn Perks, Nina
Kraskov and Deb Watson, who volunteer an enormous amount of time to their roles, a huge thank you for a job
well done. Thank you to our Executive and Finance Committee who bring exceptional personal and business skills
to this group: Vice President; Rod, Treasurer; Rob and Secretary; Duncan. We meet regularly with Cindy, to
oversee the financial management of Carinya, to make recommendations regarding strategic planning and to
keep our finger on the pulse of this amazing organisation.
Rod and Rob are also members of the GRACE (Gippsland Regional Aged Care Enterprise) Committee, a group with
representatives from Woorayl Lodge and Prom Coast Aged Care. This group, chaired by Rob have developed an
excellent support network across the three facilities, making positive financial gains and resource management
improvements for each facility. Duncan, has taken on the additional role of chair of the Building Committee and
liaises directly with our Project Managers and contracted Builders. This is one of Duncan’s personal areas of
expertise and we value his contribution at this very exciting time.
Our other Committee members have also taken on extra roles in addition to Committee of Management. Max is
a member of the Building Committee and brings a great deal of background knowledge to this group. Lyn is a
member of the Auxiliary and the Fundraising Committee and also leads us in the planning and fit outs of the
Independent Living Units. Frank is the Chair of our Fundraising Committee, an enthusiastic group who have
already raised in excess of $40,000 this year. Nina, has extensive knowledge and experience in Aged Care and
despite not living in the town, she still travels back to Korumburra to offer her support to our Committee, with
regard to trends and reforms in Aged Care. Deb, our newest Committee member, is also a member of the
Fundraising Committee, and brings with her a range of skills in grant writing, and in strategic planning for
personalised care for the elderly. Thank you so much to you all!
The voluntary work of our Auxiliary, led by Sandra Hopkins, deserves a very special thank you for their continued
efforts. In addition to fundraising this group also provides support for staff during many lifestyle activities,
creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere for visitors and residents.
We also have many individual volunteers and community groups. To the Friends of Carinya, a small group of local
men, who support Darren in his huge maintenance role, thank you for your support; in particular Stuart Goadby
who is always available for lawn mowing and various jobs. To the Korumburra Rotary Club, who regularly clean
our windows; we appreciate your help. To Greenhills Community Benevolent Society and Michael’s IGA, once
again our heartfelt thanks for your ongoing support and generous donations.
After numerous challenges the construction of our new Carinya extension
commenced earlier this year. On completion, we will have a “State-of-the-Art”
facility. However, this has not been without disruption to our residents and staff.
So, on behalf of our Committee of Management, thank you for your positive
attitude and patience during this challenging time.
TREASURER’S REPORT
Both the Aged Care Facility and the Independent Living Units recorded good surplus results and we are now in
our third straight year of positive results. The changes made at the beginning of the 2018 financial year through
our government funding model has certainly been the main driver again of revenue. The boards’ mantra has
always been “whatever profits are made by Carinya are ploughed back to improving facilities for our resident and
to continue to strive for excellence”. We now have 65 staff at the Lodge helping to provide the best possible care
for our residents.
Our internal Auditor has again given us a clean bill of health, a recent accreditation audit conducted by
Government officials since the Royal Commission was announced, has given Carinya the highest possible rating
under their new ratings criteria.
It’s been a year of change with new policies being introduced by the Government which reflect the changes in
legislation for aged care. We have designed a fresh new logo, new uniforms for staff along with many other
changes to reflect the ever-changing landscape of aged care.
One of the most important areas that would be remiss of me not to comment on is our valued staff, especially
those at our front line, our amazing Nurses, personal carers, cleaners, laundry and maintenance. A special thanks
also to our kitchen staff who sometimes miss out on a thank you for the wonderful meals they prepare every day
for our residents.
It was good also during the year to welcome back Belinda Egan as our Clinical Care Manager and I make a special
mention to Michelle Denman for her hard work in her previous role. Because of the hard work and dedication of
our office staff, we wouldn’t function as well as we do. Thank you again for a great year of service to Michelle
Burgess, Julie, Judy and Sharon.
During the year we employed an Executive Assistant, Sarah Jackson, to help Cindy in the day to day running of
the Aged Care Facility. What Sarah has been able to achieve in a short space of time is to take Carinya to the next
level and is an integral part of our management team. We now have fortnightly meetings with action plans for all
and this has enabled everyone to have a clear guidance to the tasks they need to fill and action in that fortnightly
period.
Finally, I would like to thank our dedicated CEO, Cindy Nicholas. Through Cindy’s management style and readiness
to tackle any task the Aged Care Facility has certainly been able to grow through her efforts, diligence and her
continual strive for excellence. To walk into her office on a regular basis, as I have during the year, I am always
greeted with a friendly smile. I congratulate her on another
fine year of service.
Gippsland Regional Aged Care Enterprises or Grace Ltd which
was started by us and Prom Country Aged care has continued
to grow during the year. We have now included Woorayl Aged
Care into the group and we have continued to expand our
charter. Now as a buying group with 165 beds of buying power
we have been able to reduce costs such as medical, food
supplies and insurances and we are now continuing to expand
the group into areas including the sharing of staff. The model has been so successful that we now have other
aged care facilities looking at coming on board. A strategic plan is also on the drawing boards to take GRACE Ltd
to the next level.
It is again an exciting time for Carinya, and I ask each and everyone one of you in the room tonight to get behind
our wonderful staff to deliver the best possible outcome for our residents now and into the future.
CEO’S REPORT
Firstly, I would like to acknowledge the Committee of Management and the Executive team for their support and
strategic direction over the last 12 months. The team spent many months during the year working on our
strategic plan, creating a document that we are proud to move forward with. It was a very positive experience
to challenge our ideals and values to ensure Carinya continues to provide the expected level of care while taking
into account the new expectations regarding aged care. The business, care and community goals that we have
set for Carinya over the next 10 years will ensure that we can continue to provide the community with appropriate
and respectful aged care and retirement living.
As you may be aware there has been increased scrutiny within the aged care sector over the past 12 months and
this has had positive and negative impacts on Carinya. The Royal Commission is currently still gathering evidence
from the sector and we do not expect the findings until late next year. This process has highlighted some very
negative practices within a few facilities nationally but also the positive programs within the sector. Reduced
funding and increased wages and expectations has seen the overall profit within the sector fall by over 40%. This
has been highlighted significantly through the Royal Commission. There is a hope that the Department of Health
will consider further funding boosts moving forward until the recommendations from the Royal Commission are
handed down. Negatively the sector has seen many staff move away from aged care under this scrutiny. Carinya
is lucky to have a team of dedicated staff supporting us but we are very mindful of the potential impact regarding
staffing.
A $7.5M development has commenced
earlier this year. This vision started over 2
years ago with discussions with Committee
about ensuring the facility has the capacity
to support the community as it ages. It is
wonderful to see all our hard work come to
fruition. We have worked and will
continue to work hard to ensure the
residents are impacted as little as possible.
Generally, the residents have been very
positive about the development and are
following the progress with great interest.
We anticipate the conclusion of works will
be around October 2020 with the result
being a very impressive facility for our
community.
Cindy Nicholas (CEO), Belinda Egan
(Clinical Manager), Michelle Burgess
(Retirement Village Manager) and
Julie Damon (Business Manager)
Russel Broadbent (MP), Cindy Nicholas (CEO), Michael McCormack (Deputy PM) and
Jenny Blackmore (President Carinya)
During the past 12 months there has been some significant changes within the
organisation’s structure at Carinya. Michelle Denman reduced her hours taking
up the clinical coordinators position, room was then available for Belinda Egan to
return to Carinya. I would like to thank Michelle and Belinda for their support and
clinical leadership. We had a very positive result from our accreditation this year
and that was due to the dedication of our clinical team. Julie Damon was
promoted to the role of Business Manager. Julie has been at Carinya for a
number of years and this promotion has helped Carinya have the resources to
develop better processes around our Business Management,
admissions/discharges and OHS. Recently we welcomed Sarah Jackson as Executive Assistant to support the
management team, her enthusiasm is a positive addition to Carinya. She supports the facility and staff and she
has introduced some great initiatives that have been well received by staff and residents. Michelle Burgess has
achieved great things within the Retirement Village. There have been new units handed over to very happy new
residents and the community hub has seen some great connections being made. The management team at
Carinya is a very positive high performing group of professionals and I want to thank them for their support, ideas
and hard work for Carinya and the community.

9
Continued…
Further thanks needs to go to Carinya’s extensive support networks. We have many people involved with Carinya
and all offer their time and expertise to ensure the residents and community have an amazing facility. First thank
you is to the staff and volunteers, who offer care to our residents with respect and dignity; supporting Carinya in
the pursuit of better outcomes for our residents. Committee of Management, volunteers and auxiliary all offer
their time and expertise with generosity. More recently the fundraising committee have come on board to
support Carinya with our financial targets. To our aged care and retirement living residents, thank you for all
being amazing and ensuring our workplace is always fun. We never have boring days at Carinya.
New dining room under construction
The next 12 months will be very busy as the development moves to completing stages. We anticipate that some
of the new beds will come on line around April next year which will see us being able to offer more beds to the
community. This will mean increases in staff and changes to our processes as we prepare to become a bigger
facility. This time will be exciting but also challenging to residents and staff as the dynamics of Carinya change.
The Retirement Village will also see 4 new units completed in the New Year. With the increase in units and
residents, the Committee will spend more time strategically to ensure we have all the resources needed for the
village. Carinya certainly has some very positive times ahead and I thank all those that have supported us to
ensure our facility remains a wonderful place to be a part of.
Cindy Nicholas

DEVELOPMENT/ BUILDING REPORT
Carinya Lodge Homes Incorporated (Carinya) has been providing accommodation and services in the not-forprofit
sector of Aged Care for almost 50 years, operating its village and facilities on strong Community based
principles. Carinya is fully accredited to Commonwealth and State standards.
Carinya is a living organisation. Emphasis has always been placed on the community surroundings and drives our
strategic master plan for the Carinya site.
Carinya’s tradition of innovative care extends through Independent Living, Residential, Post-Acute and Palliative
Care. Carinya understands the processes of ageing and was among the first South Gippsland regional
organisations to embrace the ageing-in-place principle. The business is currently divided into two distinct areas,
being Aged Care and Independent Living. It is important to understand where Carinya started when considering
what we have achieved to date and where we are headed.
A public meeting was held in 1969 to discuss establishing Aged Care accommodation in Korumburra, resulting in
the first Committee being formed in March 1970. Between 1972 and 1979, the first 10 units were designed,
developed and occupied. In 1978 a Department of Social Security grant was received, and plans approved for a
33-bed lodge. The new lodge was completed and opened on 9th September 1979 with 15 residents moving in
almost immediately. Within the next 8 years, 13 new units were built and occupied. Carinya was now an aged
care destination of choice amongst the community.
Carinya has grown over the last 50 years maintaining its focus as a
community based, living organisation to currently operate 42 beds
within the lodge and 48 independent living units. As we continue
our journey to serve the local community, our strategic ‘master
plan’ for the Carinya site has delivered the following results within
the last 12 months:
• Secured a $1.3m Federal grant to refurbish the original
Carinya lodge rooms.
• Developed concept plans for the development of a ‘standalone’
multi-purpose Community Centre
• Commenced planning for the infrastructure works (roads,
drainage, utilities) in the South West corner of the Carinya site.
• Developed plans and submitted a grant application for the new BBQ and recreation area located on
Farrell Drive.
• Completed development of 5 independent living units and commenced the build of 4 new units to be
completed in March 2020.
• Commenced the $7.5m re-development of the existing Lodge to improve dining, kitchen and
accommodation facilities for the Lodge residents to be completed in October 2020.
The vision for Carinya is by 2028 to have a minimum of 90 bed licenses in the residential care facility along with
60 independent living units including a ‘stand-alone’ multi-purpose community centre.
The investment in the new facilities will ensure Carinya is well placed to meet future demand, with an estimated
additional 85,000 places required within the aged care sector within Gippsland over the next decade, according
to Aged Care Financing Authority reports. This annual result reflects the Carinya Management Committee
commitment to building an outstanding people-focused aged care facility – as well as meeting demand for more
personalised services and accommodation through its service offerings.
11
CLINICAL REPORT
This year has been an interesting year for the Aged Care Sector. The Royal Commission commenced this year and
will continue into 2020. Already, within the Sector we are seeing recommendations for reform in the funding and
regulation of aged care services.
Carinya has embraced and welcomed this reform and have worked actively to bring changes into our everyday
processes. We have undertaken self-assessment of our services and have identified areas where we can enhance
our services to improve the Residents experience at Carinya.
In July this year we saw the introduction of new Quality Standards which all
organisations have to meet to stay compliant as an aged care provider. These
new standards focus on the preferences and choices made by Residents and
how they are supported and assisted in achieving their own goals whilst in
aged care.
We have spoken about preferences and choices at Resident meetings and
have provided a number of education session for employees regarding how
they can support and encourage Resident independence and decision
making. As an organisation we will be engaging more with Residents and their
families and work with them to help achieve positive outcomes in reaching
their goals.
Our greatest achievement this year is passing Accreditation. This process involved an unannounced 2 day audit
by Quality assessors. The assessors reviewed every process and every procedure and spent hours observing and
interviewing residents and their families and staff. It was a proud moment for us all to be informed we well and
truly meet the standards expected of us.
In regards to the development, we have commenced preparing for the completion of the development where
our staffing will need to increase by at least a third to cater for the extra residents. This is a great opportunity to
redesign the way we provide our care, cleaning, laundry and catering services.
In addition to redesigning our service delivery, our focus over the next year will be in continuing to enhance our
services and deliver them in a way that is flexible to the needs of residents and supportive of their right to
independence and dignity. We want to ensure we retain the comfort and compassion Carinya is known for and
ensure there continues to be love and care in everything we do.
Thank you for your support Clinical Coordinators
Michelle Denman and Bee Rashid, who are responsible
for managing the day to day clinical needs of Residents.
I would also like to thank the In-charge Team (Nurses)
and the care staff for their tireless and persistent efforts.
Thank you to kitchen coordinator Nadine James and the
lifestyle coordinator Lyn Mayo for their hard work in
preparing for accreditation and their commitment to the
residents. Thankyou also to the cleaning and laundry
team who work dutifully in the background and do their
best to provide a service that is quick and meets the
expectations of the residents.
“Its not how much you
do, but how much love
you put into the doing”
Mother Teresa
Lastly, a big thankyou to the residents at Carinya who have us all in their home every day. It is truly an honour
and a blessing to be a part of Carinya and be involved in caring for our community’s Elders.
Belinda Egan
Clinical Manager

RETIREMENT VILLAGE REPORT
The year has seen our retirement village expand to now host 46 independent living units after the April
completion of five new units in Farrell Drive. We warmly welcomed our newest residents who are settling in
extremely well and thoroughly enjoying their beautiful new homes. A further four units are currently under
construction with occupancy to be ready in early 2020. It is exciting to watch our village grow and provide such
lovely homes for our ageing community with residents both locally and further afield eager to join our village.
Thank you to builder Jaarl Enbom and his team for the high quality units being built here at Carinya and ease of
coordination during the process.
Exterior painting works to all Carinya Crescent units in maintaining handrails, gutters, fascia, windows, doors and
carports were completed in April giving them a fresh facelift. Darren Purcell and his team were welcomed by all
during their time here whilst completing works and enjoyed many chats as they busily worked away on each unit.
I wish to thank the Carinya Crescent residents for their patience and kindness to Darren and his team during this
period.
A New Independent Living Unit financial model implemented last year has been received extremely well which
assists in making funds available to allow for future planning, growth and maintenance within the village. New
information and contracts to coincide with the Retirement Villages Act have also been updated and are now
implemented for all occupancies. All prospective residents considering entering our village are provided with this
information giving them knowledge and choice around retirement living.
Design, funding and development of a Community Centre is still in the early
planning stages with the view to be built near the Farrell Drive entrance of the
village. As part of our initiative to implement the Community Centre, the
inspiration came to create our Carinya Hub in August where residents have the
opportunity to meet on a regular basis for a cuppa and chat and also other small
activities to be planned for the future. Our Hub is located at 25 Carinya Crescent
and is a wonderful opportunity for everyone to meet, introduce themselves and
enjoy the company of likeminded residents. I am thrilled to see those attending
each small event enjoying many lovely cuppas, chats and laughs. This environment
is bringing our village residents together and I look forward to watching it grow as
we continue to implement the development of a Community Centre for all to
enjoy. Our bi-monthly newsletter keeps residents informed of hub gatherings,
important notices, and movement within Carinya and the wider community,
including welcoming new residents into our village.
Continued…
New Independent Living Units

A proposal for a Community Garden and Rotunda is underway to be placed at the bottom right corner of Farrell
Drive. This will be a space hosting community garden beds for our ageing and wider community to enjoy and
experience the many benefits of gardening. Residents in both our village and aged care facility will engage with
members of our surrounding community to come together and share in nurturing the gardens, form new
friendships and feel that they are contributing and living with purpose. New car parking, rotunda, seating,
barbeque and public toilet are also included in the concept which will be a wonderful community space within
the village.
13
Darren Dredge our head of maintenance has been a
huge asset to Carinya and certainly shown us over the past 18 months just how extremely skilled he is in all
aspects, particularly during this time of our redevelopment. The staff, residents and families would agree that
nothing is ever too much to ask and I thank Darren for his endless support, dedication, hard work and kindness
in maintaining our facility and independent living units. Phillip Watson joined our maintenance team in April and
brings enormous experience in the aged and disability sector. Phillip has slotted into Carinya extremely well
working alongside Darren always bringing his friendly face, patience and expertise which staff, residents and
families truly appreciate. Thank you Phillip for joining us and adding to our brilliant maintenance team.
Thank you to our many Friends of Carinya for their volunteer work in completing maintenance jobs and assisting
with the maintenance shed move during the redevelopment. Your time and effort is always very much
appreciated and I am very grateful to have the support of such dedicated volunteers to keep Carinya maintained.
We are also extremely fortunate to have volunteer resident Stuart Goadby tending to the lawns and gardens in
Farrell Drive along with many other small maintenance jobs around the village. A huge thank you to Stuart for his
tireless work, dedication and commitment to Carinya.
I am extremely fortunate to work within the Carinya Management team and wish to thank Cindy, Belinda and
Julie for their ongoing support, brain storming and knowledge which is always invaluable. To Sarah our Executive
Assistant, Judy and Sharon in administration thank you for always assisting when required. I am grateful to have
such positive working relationships and value each and every staff member who all show such dedication and
commitment to Carinya.
Finally I wish to thank the Committee of Management who continue to entrust me in the Retirement Village
Manager role and I am thrilled at what has been achieved throughout the year for our residents. I am thoroughly
enjoying more interaction with residents and building these relationships which makes it a privilege to work within
the Carinya community and assist the independent living unit residents to live a happy and healthy lifestyle. I look
forward to the year ahead and am excited for the future plans and growth within our retirement village.
FUNDRAISING REPORT
The Fund-Raising Committee was established this year with a specific target of raising one million dollars in funds
for the exciting new development here at Carinya. Our committee meets monthly and has initiated a number of
fund-raising activities and has lots of great ideas for next year and beyond.
Michael’s IGA generously kick started our room sponsorship
program, with a $10,000 donation. We are hoping more
businesses and private community members will follow suit to
sponsor either a new or a re-furbished room. A plaque will be
engraved and positioned above the room to acknowledge the
sponsor.
Together with the Auxiliary a second Trivia night was held at the
Korumburra Golf Club earlier this year, raising $5,000. We hope
this will become an annual event, and we value the sponsorship
of the Nyora Pharmacy, and the huge effort by the Auxiliary for
this enjoyable event.
Burra Foods donated $8,000 worth of milk powder to support our “Raise a Calf” initiative. Landmark stock agent
Eddie Hams is at the forefront of purchasing and distributing the calves. Through his agency he has already
donated $5,000 to kick start calf purchases. This program currently has 30 calves adopted out to local farmers,
to be sold when they are of optimum weight, with all profits going to Carinya. Thank you Eddie and Marree Hams,
Alan Fraser and Brian Jefferis for their support.
Small Raffles, a Fire Wood Auction and Vintage Carinya Cookbooks being sold for gold coin donations and have
raised $972.70
Joan Alger and Sally Kyle recently organised a very successful High Tea in the Parish Hall.
This was attended by 120 people, who were treated to a scrumptious afternoon tea and
an enjoyable afternoon, raising over $4,700.
Going forward we have some exciting ideas in the pipeline including but not limited to:
A Movie Night at the Wonthaggi Cinema, 25 th October 2019, newly released movie, “Ride
Like a Girl” will be the viewing for the night, a gourmet supper and tea, coffee and door
prizes will conclude the night. Residents from both Carinya Lodge and the Independent
Living Units will be provided with free transport on the evening thanks to a kind offer
from Wayne Harley and bus driver Max Hall.
Together Carinya Lodge Fundraising Committee and Korumburra Golf Club will be hosting a four person Ambrose
Golf Day, on Sunday, November 24 th .
A Major Raffle has been organised with three outstanding prizes: 1st prize is a $4,000 holiday voucher from Flight
Centre; 2nd prize a beautifully crafted outdoor furniture setting made and donated by Stuart Mayo and 3rd prize
a Semi Commercial Leaf Blowe,r donated by Briggs and Stratton. Ticket sales will open end of September and
finish before Christmas 2019. This is anticipated to raise $25,000.
Before Christmas we also have plans for a huge Garage Sale, venue still to be determined. We are also hoping to
create out first Carinya calendar.
Being released in the New Year is our Donation Tree with anticipated donations of $135,000.
Finally, I would like to thank the Committee and support group: Sarah Jackson, Lyn Perks, Jess Cruikshank, Marg
LIFESTYLE REPORT
Good evening to you all, for those of you who don’t know me, my name is Lyn Mayo and I have been the Lifestyle
coordinator since March this year, when after twenty eight years Mrs. Debbie Witton resigned as the coordinator
of the lifestyle program. I would like to thank Debbie for her dedication, work and achievements as the
coordinator here at Carinya. Debbie remains a valued member of the lifestyle team.
Our lifestyle team consists of five permanent part time staff, Debbie, Jennifer, Carol, Janet and myself. We are
now covering a seven day program, during weekdays we cover eleven hours a day, and on the weekends we cover
four hours a day. A total of sixty three hours a week, dedicated to the residents lifestyle needs and wants.
We have a great group of nine permanent volunteers that assist us with a
range of activities throughout the week, from Internet café, knitting, cards,
individual support, music, group support, cultural events and outings. Our
fantastic Auxiliary are regular visitors and are a great support to the program
also. Carinya is fortunate to have many forms of entertainment visiting
throughout the year: musicians, dancers and even farm animals. We have
many denominations of religion associated with Carinya, as well as an
independent support volunteers who visit weekly. On average we run six
activities daily, as well as the supported activities that residents independently
carry out themselves, also our special event days include art sessions,
armchair travel, cultural days, and a new men’s group. Giving an estimated
total of 2200 activities a year. Currently outings have been postponed during
the winter months, and as the South Gippsland shire community bus was
deemed a liability by the Shire, other travel vehicles are being sourced.
The Kindergarten, Cubs, and Scouts’ visits would be up there as our most
popular activities, until towards the end of last year, when we had Mr.
Jayasamraj Manoharan (physio Sam) arrive at Carinya. I went from begging and
almost bribing residents to come to exercises to now having to sell tickets (pun
intended!), we have a full house daily. This is an amazing program that is
enjoyed by all, that has made and is making a difference.
The newest resident to Carinya is Maple (a feline resident). Research into introducing
a facility pet occurred after feedback was received from Residents and staff,
suggestions or “would like” were written on the “Wall of Inspiration”. Since Maple has
arrived she has made such a positive impact on residents, staff and visitors. A
diversional therapy support that has already changed many behaviours that were
impacting residents.
Since the 2018 AGM until now we have had a change of eight permanent residents
and twenty eight respite residents that have all been involved with the lifestyle
program.
Accreditation year, and the new Aged Care Quality standards are in place, only eight standards!! Lifestyle is
impacted by standard Four, Service and Supports for daily living. The statement is “Provided a safe and effective
service and support the daily living that optimise the residents (consumers) independence, health, well-being and
quality of life.” We here at Carinya are very dedicated to supporting each resident’s individual emotional, spiritual,
and psychological well-being.
Our program has such success, because of the support and dedication from all the Staff, Volunteers, Families,
Friends, Auxiliary, Committee of Management, and the Lifestyle team involved with Carinya. Thank you one and
all.
Lyn Mayo

AUXILIARY REPORT
We have continued to have our monthly meetings and afternoon teas with the residents. This is a special time
for us in getting to know the residents, whilst they enjoy the sausage rolls and slices we provide, we also have the
occasional musical entertainment.
We also have a personal visit with each resident on their birthdays, gifting them with a card and a small block of
chocolate.
We have had a few special events this year: our Christmas craft and produce stall in November at Carinya, this
provided an opportunity for residents, unit residents and families to purchase their special gifts for giving at
Christmas.
We also held a trivia night. This was a huge success and it was great to see so many families and members of the
community attend. A special thanks to George from the Nyora chemist for his donation of prizes and for MC of
the night. A special thanks to Bill Rodda, for volunteering his time and for making it a really fun night. We raised
$5,000 and thanks to everybody who helped.
We were unable to have our Beggs to Differ concert, Devonshire tea, and afternoon tea with produce stall this
year due to construction and lack of parking. However, we will try to have our Christmas Craft stall sometime
during the first week of December.
We also had our soup and sandwich day with a good roll up. As always it is a very social afternoon. I would like to
thank Auxiliary members and volunteers on the day for all their time, donations and help with serving. This event
could not come about without all their help. This was very successful raising $3,543.
This year we have purchased:
• plastic containers for activities storage
• Meat slicer for the Kitchen
We have had a number of raffles which have brought us in a large amount of money and thank you for all
donations for these plus all who sat at the supermarket selling tickets.
This year we have passed onto Carinya fundraising committee $10,000 and wish them much success.
In summary, I would like to thank all Auxiliary members for a year well done, we are still looking for new members,
so come along and join us.
KNIT AND NATTER REPORT
Knit and Natter continues to grow in numbers, we now welcome some ladies from the retirement village and also
from the local community. Growing in numbers enables our group to continue to support varying hospitals.
Articles are graciously received by the Royal Women’s Hospital, Olivia Newton John Cancer Wellness & Research
Centre and the Royal Children’s Hospital. Thank you to Jan Trewin for driving us to these hospitals. Betty Thomas
and Betty Thompson have recently joined our Knitting group, we are very grateful for the knitting that they do.
Upon formation of the Carinya Lodge Fundraising Committee, Knit and Natter collectively decided in May that
any funds raised by the group going forward would be donated to the Fundraising Committee. With great
pleasure I would like to announce that from May 2019 to present, Knit and Natter have proudly raised over $1300!
Aside from the monetary and in-kind donations that the Knit and Natter provide, the group brings a lot of joy to
the people who participate. Sharing life stories, poetry and building friendships, it goes to show that age is only
a word and a number. Sadly during the year, we lost one of our dearly loved knitters and friends, Phil Ferguson.
Phil made some beautiful knitted articles and was very much loved by all of the Knit and Natter group.
On behalf of myself and the Knit and Natter group, I would like to take this opportunity to make some special
thanks;
To the administration staff especially Sarah Jackson and Sharon Wilson for looking after the Knit and Natter money
and all of the articles in the cabinet, thank you.
Margaret Brown, Rhonda Castle, Thelma Lucas and Jean Dowell, thank you very much for your continued support.
Kitty Muir for finishing off some of our articles, for filling in for Nance or myself when we are unable to attend,
thank you. To Thea Dent who is so very gifted with her craft work, we feel so privileged that you joined our
knitting group, thank you.
Special thanks goes to Sandra Hopkins (Auxiliary), Lyn and Debbie (Lifestyle). These ladies assist our group with
so many little things throughout the year, we feel they are the salt of the earth and continue to bring so much joy
to our lives and inspire us.
Carinya Lodge for allowing our group to work with you, it is a joy and a precious gift to do so. We hope it continues
for many years to come.
Finally, to my dear very much loved friend, Nance. I personally could not run this group without you, thank you.
