4 OCTOBER 2019
Dear Readers
Light in the darkness
Now the kids have settled back into school and the weather is starting to change
towards the colder end of the mercury, I am going to talk about keeping warm.
Sounds odd I know, but some of the following devices might be of interest. Cold
hands? How about a heated mouse mat! For less than a tenner you can now keep
your fingers lovely and warm https://amzn.to/2kLf751 If you want a mouse as well,
there is this beauty https://amzn.to/2kn3il4 The first world problem of cold coffee?
Not anymore. A temperature controlled mug is what you need. Not cheap at £150 but
controlled by an app, it allows you to keep your coffee hot https://amzn.to/2msvV15
Here in Murcia, Spain, we have had the worst flooding in more than 100 years. 7
deaths and 3,500 people evacuated by emergency services. I have seen some
horrific videos, and amazing rescues. Some friends of mine, Richard and his wife
Leisl, have lost everything. His heartbreaking video can be seen here
https://bit.ly/2kKe0CF taken after he finally managed to get back to his home two
days after they were evacuated. His friends have rallied around and a gofundme page
was created that is at nearly £15,000, to help them rebuild. What I find most
amazing is that there are people donating who don’t even know them. Sometimes
technology can be a good thing, to bring light to the darkness.
In the local resort at La Torre Golf, they have used technology and Whatsapp groups
to organise help to those who really need it. The flood defences buckled and
hundreds of homes and garages were flooded along with the Hilton Hotel. With the
group which was created, people are able to ask for help, and also offer it. Organising
everything from showers, and washing, food and drinks to help those on clean-up,
and get shopping for those who have lost their cars.
Technology speeds up the dissemination of information and that is essential. I had
cause to use an app to report an incident to the local police. Within a few minutes I
was “chatting” with an operator, sending video in real time so they could determine
the urgency of the situation. These apps and services are part of everyday life, and
when used properly can be a huge help to people.
As always, please drop me a line if you have any specific requests or need some
advice. That’s Andy at ICT@lyntonadvertiser.com
St Margaret’s Hospice Glorious Gardens
St Margaret’s Hospice has been thrilled at the response to the 2019 Glorious Garden
Season which has raised in excess of £22,500 through the kind generosity of
Somerset residents sharing, visiting and volunteering in gardens across the area. This
could fund 45 days of an inpatient bed, or 225 community nurse visits!
Being garden enthusiasts we are not letting the grass grow under our feet and are
currently recruiting gardens, orchards, allotments and farms who are willing to
welcome the public, to support St Margaret’s Hospice.
We are also looking for anyone with in an interest in gardening who would like to
volunteer as an Area Organiser and support a few gardens of in their areas, or anyone
willing to just help out on an opening day by taking entry money and selling raffle
tickets.
All Glorious Gardens are covered by the St. Margaret’s Public Liability Insurance and
we give full support offering assistance with publicity, promotion and volunteer help.
If you would be interested in finding out more please give Susan a call on 01935
709182 or email susan.bickle@st-margarets-hospice.org.uk
We would be delighted to hear from you.
Two Moors Festival 11th to 20th October
Lorna Doone: A concert of Words and Music
7:30pm Sat, 12 Oct 2019
All Saints Church, Dulverton
A concert of Words and Music to celebrate the 150th
Anniversary of the first publication of R. D. Blackmore's
famous novel "Lorna Doone: A Romance of Exmoor"
This is only one of the many concerts being offered in
this year’s festival. Look at the festival website for more
information.
I have this week learned that Penny Adie is retiring as Artistic Director of the Festival.
She and her late husband started it following the foot and mouth epidemic which was
a disaster for both the farming community and the tourist industry. This year marks
the 18th festival held across Exmoor and Dartmoor.
Top Ten hit for Regal Film Society
Minehead’s Regal Theatre has scored a hit with its live screenings of opera and ballet
from the Royal Opera House (ROH) – and gone straight into the top 10 chart of UK venues.
Of more than 250 independent cinemas offering live screenings around the country, the
Regal Film Society has come in at No 6 in this year’s chart. Its place – based on ticket
sales – comes less than two years after the society began the live screening of
performances from the ROH which regularly attract audiences of more than 300 people
from all over West Somerset.
The society’s chair and co-founder, Victoria Thomas, said: “This is very exciting news and
vindicates our decision to set up live screenings at the Regal. We’re very grateful for the
positive feedback and support we have from the community for these Royal Opera House
events, and to our technical team of volunteers – headed by Martin Smith – which has
done a great deal of work to bring them to the Regal.”
The 2018/9 ROH Live Cinema Season table has been published by More2Screen which
organises distribution of live broadcasting the Opera House’s events.
The Regal Film Society’s new season has begun and the next live screening will be
Mozart’s Don Giovanni on October 8 - see www.regalfilmsociety.org or contact us at
14 OCTOBER 2019
News from the Exmoor Pony Centre
Ashwick, Dulverton TA22 9QE
We have had a very busy summer with families on holiday boosting visitor numbers, and
activity days every Thursday throughout August. Children have enjoyed seeing behind the
scenes by joining our stable yard tours and finding out about aspects of our work the
public don’t often get a chance to see, this was also an opportunity to meet some of the
ponies. On many days we have been fully booked for group fun riding, taster sessions
and treks so the ponies have worked extremely hard and are more than ready for their
annual winter holiday.
We had an enjoyable, if rather wet and windy, day at Exford Show and also hosted
several events at the Pony Centre for the Exmoor Pony Festival week including a
barbecue and quiz evening for 60 people, and a talk about bloodlines by Michael
Dewhurst. Linzi has also been out and about giving a series of evening talks at Holnicote
Estate.
The autumn gatherings are a busy time as we prepare for the new intake of foals.
If you would like to be involved in our work we have a couple of new job vacancies in our
riding and pony care team. Job specs are on our web site and Facebook page and we
would love to hear from you if you are interested.
Upcoming events:
23rd and 30th October: Join our Exmoor Ponies in discovering The Wildlife of
Exmoor at Night; a family friendly event with hot chocolate and marshmallows.
Booking is essential. Adult £3; under 16 £2.
24th and 31st October: 12 – 3pm: Halloween activity afternoons with spooky
Essential resurfacing work on
A39 at Dragon Cross
Essential resurfacing on a key road in
West Somerset is due to take place in
October. The A39 at Dragon Cross near
Bilbrook has historically been affected by
flooding with a number of drainage
schemes taking place at this location in
recent years to improve the situation.
The next step is to improve the road’s
surface, and the location was included as
part of Somerset County Council’s surface
dressing programme earlier this summer.
However, one section of the road was in a
poorer state and is therefore unsuitable
for surface dressing. This section will now
be fully resurfaced before the onset of
winter.
To minimise disruption, the road will only
be closed during off-peak hours – from
Monday to Friday between 6.30pm and
11.30pm. Work will begin on Monday 7
October with the final shift programmed
for Wednesday 16 October.
During the road closure a suggested
diversion route will be clearly signposted
on site or can be found at
