CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
S
pring has come for a while! I gather the visit to Ardmore was great. Other things
are getting in my way at the moment, but with help I can carry on, although not
attending as regularly as I would want.
This month’s theme is messages from the President (not of the USA).
Diane Quarrie has written thanking all the branches contributing to the National Rally for
Cancer. The Club raised $75,000 this year. One branch raised $17,500, but our contribution
for a small branch is commendable. So, thank you again.
I told you last month about the “Rebranding” work that has started. Those of you who
came to the club night saw the presentation we had at the AGM. It was just a starter. Nothing
agreed, just what could be done to bring our livery into the 21 st Century. It was the only
time at the AGM that I felt there was any enthusiasm to move forward. I will say, however,
that whilst helpful to portray the Club to younger people and the public, there needs to be
a more forward-thinking approach to how the Club functions as a whole. The Remit passed
in Greymouth was a backward step to my mind, but you may have other views. That’s
what democracy is about. If anyone would like to view her presentation, I can Email a copy
to you.
So that is the small stuff: may our branch move forward to the summer as we have started.
Interesting Sunday Runs, convivial get-togethers, and shiny cars. I hope the weather will be
OK for our contribution to Summerset Falls activities and the Kowhai Festival: see you
there.
Happy and Safe Motoring
Anne
CLUB CAPTAIN’S REPORT
S
o, we have successfully managed to see off the Daffodil Day Rally for another year.
Now, with the days starting to get a bit longer and the temperatures warming up a
bit, it is time to start looking forward to some springtime events. Last month’s midweek
cafe visit was to the Wade Hotel in Silverdale and by the time this report goes to
print, we will have investigated the finer points of restoring some legendary WWII aircraft
at Avspecs in Ardmore.
As to upcoming events…
• Wednesday the 2nd of October is the midweek cafe visit to Matakana Market Kitchen
at 12:00 noon. This is to be followed by attending the Golden Day at Summerset Falls at
2:30pm. We will be giving rides to some of the residents of Summerset Falls.
• Saturday the 5th of October is “Settlers Day” at the Kauri Museum in Matakohe. While
this is not a club event, an invitation has been extended to our club members to come
along and display cars. Anyone wishing to go along, please let me know so I can give them
an idea of numbers likely to attend.
• Sunday the 13th of October is the Kowhai Festival/Big Day Out. If you are keen to display
your car, come along to the lower end of Neville St before 9:00am.
• Sunday the 27th of October is the Coast to Coast Run. Plans are underway for this run.
More details to follow.
Saturday- Sunday the 2nd and 3rd of November is the Far North Tour, starting at the
Northern’s Club Rooms at Heritage Park in Whangarei and finishing in Kerikeri. Please get
your entries in before 17th October. I have been informed of a couple of recent classic vehicle
acquisitions lately and am looking forward to seeing these at some upcoming events.
Till next time... pull out your sunnies and get ready for summer, Paul
CLUB CAR OF THE MONTH
ROY’S 1929 FORD MODEL A PICKUP
I
n 1972 I was forestry working and living at Hillcrest Camp in Tokoroa. I came across
an interesting looking Model A pickup parked up. I approached the owner and a deal
was made. It caused a lot of amusement from my fellow workers at the camp.
“What are you going to do with that?”
“What did you pay for it?”
“$100”, I told them, “and I will get it roadworthy.” They weren't impressed with it and
thought me a bit mad. After a bit of work on the brakes and lights it passed a WOF – cost
$1.00. Registration cost $16.50. It was legal at last. The camp boys still thought it a bit of a
joke and then they realised it was an easy target to siphon petrol from. I got sick of supplying
the camp boys with petrol so I decided to drive it home. I parked it in a shed with the
rego on hold and it stayed there until I decided in 2012 that it was time for the little truck
to see the light of day again after all those years, as it would be ideal to use it for the 2013
Model A rally to Coromandel.
ROY’S 1929 FORD MODEL A PICKUP—CONT.
It needed just a little bit of work to make it road worthy again – tray off, body off, clean
chassis, pinion bearings, brake linings, shackles, radiator top off and clean core, check motor,
patch lower body panels, clean petrol tank ( there were a lot of kids small toys in it),
patch guard ends, replace front cross member and assemble body back onto chassis, make
up hood bows and top. Replace windscreen glass, replace floor in deck, find some tyres.
With a lick of paint it lived again. It ran well on the rally and didn't let us down. It is now
parked up again in the shed with some others for company and with the rego on hold
again, but hopefully not for 40 years this time. Roy
MYSTERY MOTORS
W
hat car is this?
Last month’s mystery motor was a Porsche R64. It was one of three prototypes
built as a sports car version of the original Volkswagen in 1939, and it
made headlines in August this year because of a disastrous auction. It was
thought the car might fetch $20 million but it failed in extraordinary circumstances.
In front of a packed room at the annual RM Sotheby's auction in Monterey, California,
auctioneer Maarten ten Holder announced the opening bid at US$13 million. However,
the bid was misunderstood by the person working the electronic screens around the room
and US$30 million was displayed on the screens. As the bidding moved to $US14 million,
the screen changed to US$40 million. With more gasps and cheers from members of the
audience, the trend continued until the screen showed US$70 million, and only then did
Mr ten Holder realise the discrepancy.
"It says 70, guys, but it's 17," Mr ten Holder said.
"It's a bit exciting to write seven-zero, it may be my pronunciation, but it's $17 million."
Amid booing from people in the audience, the auction was abandoned after the bidding
failed to reach the reserve.
A good home for my husband’s much cared for Lathe.
For someone who will take it away and use it, it is free with as many tools as I can find, but
only if I think you will take good care of it. I would hate to see it scrapped.
It has been used since it arrived in NZ but not for the last 7 years.
