the beautiful one whispered,
“I’ve been instructed to remain
with you until your program
ends … and then accompany
you to that little bar down the
hall for a few drinks and sweet
conversation.” Then, she
purred, “I’m yours for th’ rest of
th’ day and into th’ evening, Mr.
Bill.”
After informing her that I
had already made plans to
take my wife to a nice Mexicanfood
restaurant for dinner, the
beautiful one opened the door
of the structure, threw me a
kiss and purred, “I’ll just make it a point to
see you later, Mr. Bill.” She then exited the
structure and wobbled slowly toward the
exit of the mall.
I had been quite successful with my
musical jingles during this era and while
the gubernatorial election was at its
hottest, the candidates were spending a
lot of loot on radio and television exploiting
their value to those who took the time
to listen to their speeches, recorded
announcements, etc. The political nominee
who had visited with me in my studio at the
mall hired me to write a musical jingle to
help in his campaign. He had offered me a
very good sum of money to compose the
ditty. After hearing a somewhat catchy bit
of musical lyrics featuring his name, he
shouted, “Oh! I love that jingle, Bill! That’s
exactly what I need to win the election and
become governor of Texas!” Within a few
hours, my little musical composition was
being heard on the stations throughout
Texas. The nominee hadn’t paid me for my
creative talent because all his money had
been pre-spent to promote his campaign
on radio, television and various other links
in the media.
On election night, the nominee who
had been so jovial about my jingle, lost
by a landslide … as had been expected.
He had also failed to pay me a cent for
the jingle. I called his office several times,
hoping to settle the matter, but received no
response. I finally decided to simply ignore
the issue.
About six months later, I was emceeing
a dance at a club near Austin when I saw
the dude and his secretary cozily dancing
on the big dance floor. He looked at me
and shouted, “Hey Bill! Get up there with
that band and sing that jingle you wrote for
me! Th’ folks will go wild when they hear it!
It almost made me th’ governor!”
Although I was never paid for my
jingle, I didn’t hold a grudge against the
nominee. It was just another unpredictable
happening in the giant arena of “politics.”
