Glass Half Full or Glass Half Empty<br />

ave you ever heard the phrase “Misery<br />

Hloves company?” Boy, is that ever true!<br />

It’s crazy how negativity can escalate in a<br />

group if you let it, how easy it is to get swept<br />

up in the less-than-stellar aspects of a situation<br />

rather than realize that you’re choosing to<br />

drown in the bad rather than focusing on the<br />

good. Because rarely –if ever—is any situation<br />

100% bad. But what you choose to focus<br />

on makes all the difference.<br />

If you’re on Facebook, you might be familiar<br />

with groups that you can join to interact<br />

with like-minded folks out there in social media<br />

world. For instance, I’m in various groups<br />

for my love of reading and traveling, pets or<br />

sports. And when you’re in those, you can<br />

post and see others’ posts on the subject,<br />

comment accordingly, get tips and tricks, learn<br />

things you might now know, etc.<br />

There are multiple groups for Trucking: like<br />

“Everything Trucking” or “Trucking: Rates &<br />

Lanes.” There’s even a “Trucking and Single”<br />

group, if that’s you.<br />

But beware, many of these groups can go<br />

downhill in a hurry if you choose to let them.<br />

Some folks out there are only happy if they’re<br />

unhappy. And when they’re unhappy, they<br />

want others to be unhappy. And that snowball<br />

is one bound to crash badly.<br />

I’m in a group for a community where I own


a townhome. It’s in a great gated community<br />

with tons of super amenities (pools, etc). When<br />

we first purchased, I was very surprised to<br />

learn there was not a Facebook group already<br />

in place for owners in the community. After all,<br />

it’s a great way to ask questions or share info<br />

about coming events, and so on. I thought of<br />

starting one and then looked at the zillions of<br />

things I already need to handle and decided<br />

against it. After all, these must be moderated<br />

and pretty regularly so extreme comments are<br />

addressed or removed, no scammers are present,<br />

etc.<br />

But I was delighted to hear that someone<br />

else started a group earlier this year for our<br />

community and gladly joined. And from there,<br />

were my eyes been opened to a lot of things<br />

I hadn’t realized. Neighbors claiming the landscaping<br />

wasn’t good enough, the trash should<br />

be emptied more often, the pool chairs need to<br />

be cleaned, the staff is rude, the owner’s desk<br />

doesn’t do what they should, the security gate<br />

personnel are unfriendly. And on and on. Now<br />

this place I thought was fantastic suddenly took<br />

on a different vibe. Had we purchased poorly?<br />

Was this a sink hole of real estate vs the investment<br />

we thought it would be?<br />

But as I walked around last week, trying to<br />

be more objective in my own assessment, I<br />

have to say the place was sparkling. Everyone<br />

was cordial, doing their jobs. The lawns were<br />

mowed, the pool was pristine, the trees were<br />

being pruned, paint was fresh. And I thought:<br />

man, what are these other owners thinking?<br />

Are they SEARCHING for things to complain<br />

about? I’m sure everything isn’t perfect (what<br />

is?) but from what I saw, it was pretty stellar.<br />

And yet, in that group: complain, complain,<br />

complain.<br />

And it reminded me of the adage: Misery<br />

loves company. One starts complaining and<br />

others pile on and it escalates. And then it’s<br />

even harder to be the lone voice saying: Really?<br />

Are you really being fair in your assessment<br />

or are you nitpicking just to nitpick?<br />

Subtlety, I now chime in my positive<br />

thoughts and find that others are very happy<br />

to agree on those things. I’m learning that not<br />

everyone agrees with those dissenters. They<br />

do think the community is amazing and would<br />

rather focus on the good as well as how we can<br />

be even better than to simply point out what’s<br />

wrong (or they think is wrong). To everyone that<br />

will listen.<br />

So if you find yourself in a group—in person<br />

or online—just don’t get suckered into the<br />

negative environment some seem to thrive on.<br />

Life viewed positively is far better than the alternative.<br />

A reminder: Plan for your parking just as you<br />

plan for rest of your trip<br />

When it comes to parking, there is no technique or process<br />

that guarantees success in finding a place to park or the<br />

complete safety of driver, vehicle and cargo once a space is<br />

found. There are, however, things you can do to improve the<br />

odds of finding an available space and reducing the risk of<br />

something bad happening while you are there.<br />

The first is to plan for parking just as you plan the rest of<br />

your trip. Waiting until you are tired or nearly out of driving<br />

hours (or both) may work in some parts of the country but in<br />

others it’s a recipe for trouble. Smart drivers plan their parking,<br />

too.<br />

There are many available apps to assist the driver in<br />

finding parking. TruckerPath is an app that not only identifies<br />

fuel stops and other parking locations but allows driver input<br />

providing real time information to the user. Apps like Interstate<br />

Exit Guide, DAT Trucker, Trucker Tools, Park My Truck (NATSO),<br />

TruckSmart (T/A Petro) and Prime Parking (Pilot Flying J) offer<br />

location information as well as fuel pricing and other services.<br />

At some locations, spaces can be reserved for a fee ranging<br />

from $10 to $20 and up.<br />

Some states use signage to inform drivers of available<br />

spaces at upcoming exits, and many states encourage<br />

parking at weigh station lots. Some state DOT websites offer<br />

parking information as well.<br />

When it comes to finding a parking space, timing is<br />

everything. In many areas, truck stop parking lots fill up by 6<br />

p.m. The few spaces that open up as drivers leave are quickly<br />

taken. If it’s possible to adjust your schedule, starting early in<br />

the day provides more time to complete a driving shift and<br />

stop for the night while spaces are still available. Driving at<br />

night can help, too, as it’s easier to find a parking spot at<br />

most truck stops in the morning, when other drivers are just<br />

beginning their day.<br />

Some drivers prefer to find parking on the shoulder of<br />

Interstate entrance ramps or other roadside spots. This can<br />

be a risky practice and some carriers prohibit the practice<br />

with “sitting duck” policies. The risk of accident is higher than<br />

in a sanctioned parking area and secluded areas offer little<br />

protection against criminal activity. Additionally, in the dark,<br />

it can be difficult to judge whether the parking surface can<br />

support the weight of tractor and trailer.<br />

Once parking is found, there are still hazards to deal<br />

with. Remember that the rest period doesn’t begin until<br />

safely parked. Many accidents happen in the short drive<br />

between the Interstate and the parking space as drivers<br />

maneuver through traffic and sometimes confusing driveway<br />

configurations. Driving through a truck stop lot can be like<br />

maneuvering through a maze, especially when some drivers<br />

don’t park correctly.<br />

Truck stops often have a great deal of foot traffic. A<br />

thorough check of a parking space and the surrounding<br />

area is a great idea, before backing into a space. Lighting is<br />

a proven deterrent to crime and a well-lit area is preferable<br />

to a dark one. If you plan to go into the truck stop for a meal,<br />

shopping, or any other reason, think about your route. As<br />

much as possible you’ll want to walk in areas where you, and<br />

anyone who approaches you, can be easily seen. Check all<br />

around your vehicle before getting out, including the mirrors.<br />

While walking, pay attention to your surroundings and<br />

especially anyone who seems to be paying attention to you.<br />

Back in your truck, make sure your doors are locked.<br />

Many drivers employ a cargo rachet strap to further secure<br />

the doors in case locks fail or are deactivated.<br />

Truck stops are often a target of cargo thieves, too. If<br />

you’re pulling a van or refrigerated trailer, it’s a good idea<br />

to back as close as possible to another trailer or any object<br />

that can prevent the opening of trailer doors. Door locks or<br />

other securement devices are never a bad idea. Be aware,<br />

however, that cargo thieves often use truck stops for planning<br />

and information gathering, choosing another location to make<br />

their move. Don’t share information about your cargo or your<br />

destination with anyone and be suspicious of anyone asking<br />

you questions. A common ruse employed by thieves is to<br />

“inform” you of a closed road due to construction or accident,<br />

offering an alternate route that sends you to a secluded area<br />

where the trap is sprung. Always verify any information you<br />

receive from a “friendly” local.<br />

When you leave, be watchful of anyone paying too much<br />

attention to you or following you from the truck stop and call<br />

the police if you suspect you are followed.<br />

Plan for your parking, arrive early enough to get a space,<br />

pay attention to your surroundings and use securement,<br />

for both yourself and your cargo, and your chances of a<br />

safe, comfortable rest period increase. Parking for a wellearned<br />

rest break should be a relaxing time to recharge<br />

and refresh.<br />

There’s an old saying that’s been<br />

expressed for years: “It’s election time!<br />

That’s when the air is full of speeches …<br />

and the speeches are full of air!”<br />

My old grandmother used to urge me<br />

to go to the polls on election day because<br />

that would help put an end to all the loud<br />

speeches!<br />

When I asked my grandmother which<br />

candidate she was voting for, she replied,<br />

“I’m not going to tell you which one of them<br />

I’m voting for because I can’t remember his<br />

name!” Then, she added, “It really doesn’t<br />

matter much which one you vote for. The<br />

only difference in them is the clothes they<br />

are wearing. They have the very same<br />

opinions about what should be done to<br />

make our country a better place to live,<br />

they just use different words to describe<br />

what they plan to do if elected.”<br />

Grandma paused a moment before<br />

growling, “Of course none of them will<br />

keep their words.”<br />

Although I have never revealed my<br />

personal political choices on my radio<br />

programs, I have been involved in some<br />

very interesting political happenings<br />

throughout the years.<br />

When I was working for a radio station<br />

in San Antonio, Texas, I did a daily<br />

program from a huge mall located on the<br />

east side of the city. The radio station had<br />

built an enclosed structure that seated<br />

three people behind microphones setting<br />

on a big console. Almost every day I would<br />

have a guest visit my program. Most of<br />

these guests were entertainers who were<br />

on tour with their show dates set for the<br />

San Antonio area. They would visit my<br />

radio show to promote their upcoming<br />

appearances. There were also those<br />

country music performers who dropped by<br />

my program in order to promote their latest<br />

recordings.<br />

A well-known politician who was in the<br />

running for Governor of Texas had called the<br />

radio station informing them that he would<br />

be available as a guest on my program<br />

in order to share his feelings about what<br />

needed to be changed in our state. He was<br />

informed that my program’s format was<br />

limited to country music entertainers. The<br />

politician implied he totally understood. A<br />

few days later, I was in the midst of my<br />

show when this dude came walking toward<br />

my studio structure with a big smile on his<br />

face. He was accompanied by a beautiful<br />

lady. Without hesitation, he and the lady,<br />

whom he referred to as his secretary,<br />

walked inside the structure and sat down<br />

beside me at the console. Since I had not<br />

been informed otherwise, I assumed the<br />

nominee had been invited by the headsof-state<br />

at the radio station to visit with me.<br />

The beautiful secretary had conveniently<br />

seated her beautiful body in the chair<br />

between the nominee and me. Before<br />

I could say a word, she gave me that<br />

gorgeous, tempting smile accompanied by<br />

the blinking of her beautiful blue eyes. I<br />

uttered a flimsy welcome to the nominee<br />

and he immediately took complete<br />

command of my program by uttering<br />

loud words in a non-stop fashion without<br />

pausing for a moment for me to respond<br />

to what he was blabbing. The secretary<br />

squeezed my hand, presumably to make<br />

things comfy for me while her boss<br />

continued to blab into the microphone at<br />

break-neck speed!<br />

Finally, after several minutes of raving<br />

hot air had exploded into his microphone,<br />

the nominee shouted, “Now, you folks be<br />

sure and cast your votes for me and we’ll<br />

put Texas in the best shape ever!” Before<br />

I could utter a single word, he added, “Bill<br />

Mack has told me he’ll be voting for me!<br />

You folks just follow Bill to the polls, and<br />

you’ll be doin’ Texas and me a big favor!<br />

Bye for now!”<br />

The politician grabbed my hand, shook<br />

it briefly and immediately left my studio<br />

structure, while I was completely confused.<br />

I was frozen to my seat in shock before I<br />

realized the secretary was still seated next<br />

to me, smiling more fashionable than ever!<br />

I finally managed to hit the button to begin<br />

a much needed musical recording when<br />

the beautiful one whispered,<br />

“I’ve been instructed to remain<br />

with you until your program<br />

ends … and then accompany<br />

you to that little bar down the<br />

hall for a few drinks and sweet<br />

conversation.” Then, she<br />

purred, “I’m yours for th’ rest of<br />

th’ day and into th’ evening, Mr.<br />

Bill.”<br />

After informing her that I<br />

had already made plans to<br />

take my wife to a nice Mexicanfood<br />

restaurant for dinner, the<br />

beautiful one opened the door<br />

of the structure, threw me a<br />

kiss and purred, “I’ll just make it a point to<br />

see you later, Mr. Bill.” She then exited the<br />

structure and wobbled slowly toward the<br />

exit of the mall.<br />

I had been quite successful with my<br />

musical jingles during this era and while<br />

the gubernatorial election was at its<br />

hottest, the candidates were spending a<br />

lot of loot on radio and television exploiting<br />

their value to those who took the time<br />

to listen to their speeches, recorded<br />

announcements, etc. The political nominee<br />

who had visited with me in my studio at the<br />

mall hired me to write a musical jingle to<br />

help in his campaign. He had offered me a<br />

very good sum of money to compose the<br />

ditty. After hearing a somewhat catchy bit<br />

of musical lyrics featuring his name, he<br />

shouted, “Oh! I love that jingle, Bill! That’s<br />

exactly what I need to win the election and<br />

become governor of Texas!” Within a few<br />

hours, my little musical composition was<br />

being heard on the stations throughout<br />

Texas. The nominee hadn’t paid me for my<br />

in the media.<br />

On election night, the nominee who<br />

had been so jovial about my jingle, lost<br />

by a landslide … as had been expected.<br />

He had also failed to pay me a cent for<br />

the jingle. I called his office several times,<br />

hoping to settle the matter, but received no<br />

response. I finally decided to simply ignore<br />

the issue.<br />

About six months later, I was emceeing<br />

a dance at a club near Austin when I saw<br />

the dude and his secretary cozily dancing<br />

on the big dance floor. He looked at me<br />

and shouted, “Hey Bill! Get up there with<br />

that band and sing that jingle you wrote for<br />

me! Th’ folks will go wild when they hear it!<br />

It almost made me th’ governor!”<br />

Although I was never paid for my<br />

jingle, I didn’t hold a grudge against the<br />

nominee. It was just another unpredictable<br />

happening in the giant arena of “politics.”<br />
