2018
It’s hard to believe that Bombtrack is turning five years old, well I guess
what they say is true, time flies when you’re having fun. As the brand
first began with a focus on single speed and fixed gear freestyle bikes, it
really feels like things have come a long way in that time. The bikes have
certainly got more gears now, and quite a lot more complicated, but our
passion to produce bikes that we’d love to ride and own ourselves remains
the goal.
2018 marks some significant developments in our range of bikes, perhaps
the proudest of which is finally releasing a women’s specific, steel
framed road and CX bike. Moving from conversations, to drawing boards
these bikes have been in the works for some time. Building on what we
have learned over the past few years we are thrilled to see them finally
released, and can’t wait to see them put into action.
The Arise was one of the first models for Bombtrack,
and since the very first version it has always
been the most popular in the range. Over
the years the Arise has developed offspring,
each more tailored in a specific direction, yet
always retaining that fundamental ‘multi-purpose’
characteristic. New for 2018 the Arise
1 brings things back to where it all started, a
simple steel single speed, yet offering scope for
customisation. The Arise 2 is the most recognizable
bike of recent years, now fully matured
and more than capable from daily tasks to
weekend adventures. Featuring our very own
invest-cast fork crown, sliding dropouts and
the option for 650B tires, making it undoubtedly
the most versatile bike in the range. Also
new to the Arise family is the Tour, a long distance
tourer fully equipped with lights, racks
and fenders all set for an adventure.
Although part of the Arise
around a more touring specific
geometry. The longer wheelbase
and increased fork offset
combine to provide greater
stability when riding with
heavy loads. Components are
carefully selected for a more
touring specific purpose as can
be seen with Tubus racks and
The Hook range has come a long way from the
original bike of 2015. Originally developed as a
steel CX and gravel bike from which now multiple
variations have spawned. The Hook 1 remains
closest to the original bike, with oversized tubes
welded into a multi-purpose geometry. The Hook
2 advanced things with the addition of thru axles
and utilizing the mountain bike derived 1x drivetrain
from SRAM, and upgraded tubing courtesy
of Columbus. New for 2018 the Hook WMN
has been built from the ground up with women’s
specific ergonomics in mind providing an optimized
sizing and component selection to offer a
bike that fits like a glove. The Hook EXT took
the Hook range a step further, and proved to be
a huge hit with riders looking for bigger tires
in a gravel bike package. New for 2018 is a full
carbon fiber version offering the same tire clearances,
proven SRAM Rival-1 drivetrain and anything
cage ready. Gravel riding just got lighter!
17
As the closest relative to the
original Hook, the Hook 1 is
really where it all starts. Starting
with a geometry that is
well balanced for cross, gravel
or even eating up road miles,
the Hook is very versatile, yet
comfortable with whatever task
lies ahead. The oversized down
tube, BB30 shell, and straight
head tube clearly show
the Hook’s intentions
as a durable do-it-all
machine.
As a brand-new model for 2018
the Hook EXT-C builds on the
Over the last 2-3 years we’ve
been looking for an opportunity
to work with some passionate
Cyclocrossers and support them
through their race season. But
for one reason or another we’ve
never been able to find the
right fit for Bombtrack’s bikes
and brand. Finally it’s all fallen
into place, with the recent
growth of the Australian CX
scene we’re excited to announce
our support for Bombtrack
Treadly Racing. In partnership
with like-minded brands such
as MAAP clothing, Chrome Industries,
Praxis Works, Schwalbe,
Nuun Hydration and the
Adelaide based Treadly Bike
Shop. We’re most excited that
this diverse group of ladies &
gents are a perfect match for
our HOOK models and our
brand in general. We met with
Bombtrack Treadly Racing team
manager Jake Thomas to find
out more about the vibe of their
unique team.
Introduce yourself and the team a
little bit:
My name’s Jake Thomas and I’m a
jack-of-all-trades at Treadly Bike Shop
in Adelaide, Australia. I run as much
of the shop as I can and jump into
the workshop when things get out of
hand! The Bombtrack Treadly Racing
team started out just as a few of us
who wanted to wear the same t-shirt at
Summer Crossraces for a bit of fun and
to make us turn up and race, and this
year has turned a little more serious
with more of us committing to more
racing across the National Series.
Why Cyclocross?
Cyclocross is such a beast of a sport
- which I think is evident when you
try to explain what you’re doing to
someone who doesn’t really get bikes!
It’s kind of like mountain biking, but
you’re on essentially just road bikes, in
the mud. Especially in Australia, ‘cross
is booming because it’s a sport that is
often held within riding distance of
major cities, you don’t really need all
that much gear or fitness to turn up and
race, and because the laps are pretty
short no matter how slow or fast you’re
going, you’re never on your own for too
long out there!
How much of the appeal of ‘cross do
you think is in that accessibility?
It feels like a lot of the appeal is how
easy it is to turn up and race. We’re getting
200+ racers at local races in South
Australia and Victoria now, across 4
grades of Men and 3 grades of Women,
plus Juniors. The National Championships
that were just held here in Adelaide
had 250+ racers across a full range
of Junior/Masters/Elite grades, and it
was amazing to see so many turn up to
race in perfect ‘cross conditions (wet,
windy and covered in mud!). It’s great
to see so many people come out and just
have a go at it out of nowhere - and
they get to say they were in the same
race as the National Champion! That’s
the real magic of CX in Australia at the
moment.
It sounds like the racing in Australia
is quite different to the racing you
might watch in Europe or America.
How do you think it differs?
Oh man, we watch all the racing we
can from the Euro and US seasons over
here. All the races that they televise are
so pro and the racers are all completely
mesmerising to watch. The top end
of our Men’s and Women’s Elite races
“I AM A FIRM BE-
LIEVER THAT PEO-
PLE OF ALL GENDERS
SHOULD BE REPRE-
SENTED PROPERLY
IN SPORT EVERY-
WHERE...”
are like that, with just incredible skill
and power it’s beautiful to watch, but
the rest of the day is populated with
everyone from A-grade crit racers trying
their hand at getting dirty to kids
who’ve only been on the bike a handful
of times in their lives - and it’s a great
day out for everyone. CX in Australia is
so welcoming and supportive a community,
and I’m sure that’s the case at the
bigger international races, it’s just that
it doesn’t get televised and we don’t see
it!
The team is half men and half women,
how important is that to you?
It’s perhaps the most important part
of running the team, for me. I am a
firm believer that people of all genders
should be represented properly in
sport everywhere, and so when I have
the power to help that out it’s a no
brainer to make sure I’ve got women
on the team. Actually, with one guy out
with injury for the whole season from
the local team, the girls outnumber the
guys now. Seeing the number of women
racing here at our local rounds and
around the country is excellent, and it’s
only growing every race!
You mentioned a local team. What’s
that about?
Well the team is split into two - there
are 7 riders on the National Team
who’ve committed to racing the National
Series and making sure we have
numbers at races in Brisbane (2200km
away from Adelaide!), Bright (900km)
and Melbourne (700km), and 3 more
riders who continued their sponsorship
over from the TreadlyCX team last year
to race the SA State Series here for
Bombtrack Treadly Racing. It’s really
fun to have so many riders on the team
out and about in the team kit at races,
even if it is a headache to organise
sometimes!
How did your relationship with Bombtrack
come about?
Treadly has a really great relationship
with the Australian importer for Bombtrack
(Link Sports), and we thought
that CX racing would be a really great
way to shout from the rooftops about
these bikes that BT are making,
so to speak. It just made
sense to us to get as many
people riding Bombtracks at
the races as we could to try
and let other people know
that there was this little
brand making really cool
bikes that could do just as
well as any of the big brands,
and Bombtrack liked the idea
and ran with it!
Who are some of your other
sponsors?
Hydration to keep our electrolytes!
What can we expect to see in the
future?
We’ve got big plans for the 2018 season
already! There’s so much excellent
racing that goes on around the country,
we’re just going to try and get out to as
many of them and hopefully scoop up
some more race wins and series leads to
add to the trophy cabinet!
What’s your favourite bike from this
year’s catalog?
I really love the look of the EXT-C. I’m
actually thinking about trying it out as
a race bike next year - I reckon it would
give the Hook AL a run for it’s money
with a set of 33c tubulars on there!
Actually, the Beyond + 2 might just be a
more fun bike than anything else in the
lineup - its certainly the bike I want
the most!
Where can we find the team?
Instagram has opened up the
world to many wild adventures
and stories that even ten years
ago we would never have heard
about - except for maybe in
the travel section at the book
shop. Now a quick swipe down
on your feed will bring a raft
of images from inspiring people
around the world. When it
comes to bikepacking adventures
Franzi & Jona from “Tales
on Tyres” are probably two of
the most prominent adventurers
in the scene at the moment.
Their brave approach to live on
their bikes and report en-route
of some of the most outstanding
and remote locations around
the world has fascinated us. We
were constantly refreshing our
Instagram feed, eagerly awaiting
their next exciting story and
simply jaw-dropping photography
that has reached almost
every continent. Not only that,
but they have given some very
unique insights into life on the
road, and cultures that many of
us would never get a chance to
experience ourselves through
their blog www.tales-on-tyres.
com. Most recently, their video
“Riding the Baja Divide” hit
the internet at the start of 2017
and created a huge buzz as the
cycling world begun to discover
this daunting, but rewarding
route through Mexico. Now, after
living on their bikes for the
last five years, they have decided
to return home. But for how
long? And where are they actually
from? Is that really home?
Their wealth of experiences is
reason enough to meet them…
We’ve heard the name “Tales On Tyres” floating about the world wide web for
quite a while now. Who are you and where are you from?
T A L E S
O N T Y R E S
We are Franzi and Jona from Hamburg in Germany. In 2012 we quit our jobs and
left everything behind to explore the world. We backpacked across India and Nepal
for a while but soon realised that we weren’t enjoying it. In search of alternative
ways to travel, the idea to ride bicycles across countries and continents seemed
tempting. So we gave it a try. Our first tour took us from the ancient cities of Iran
to the wide open country of Mongolia
and it is fair to say we fell in love with
this form of travel. After that journey
we worked for a while to finance our
next journey, zig-zagging across the
“... WHEN YOU
TRAVEL BY BICYCLE
THE CHALLENGE AND
REWARD IS GREATER
THAN JUST THE ACT
OF RIDING A BIKE.”
Americas, which took us 1.5 years from
Alaska to Chile.
Through your travels, which country,
people or area did you enjoy the most
– and why?
It is impossible to pick a favourite.
The beauty of travel is the diversity
you experience along the journey. Each
country and culture are distinctively
different and interesting for their
differences, it is hard to compare them.
For us, Iran was a country which made
it very easy for us to engulf ourselves in
a totally different culture. We were constantly
invited into people’s homes and
they were very open to share their lives.
On the other hand, in South America,
we felt the people were more reserved
and it took more effort to really engage
with them. But these are the little details
which make traveling so interesting,
to observe and see all the diversity
of culture lifestyle with open eyes and
an open heart.
When did you have your first bike trip,
and were you into cycling before you
started the Tales On Tyres adventure?
We did commute around the city and
to work but we had never ridden long
distances before. So the ride from Iran
to Mongolia was our first major trip
by bike. However we’ve learnt that you
don’t necessarily
need to have a lot
of cycling experience
to enjoy
long-distance bike
travel, because
when you travel by
bicycle the challenge
and reward
is greater than just
the act of riding
a bike. While it
might seem like the
biggest challenge,
the funny thing is,
physically pushing
those pedals
everyday might be
the easiest task on
a bike touring trip.
You get stronger
every day, it might
start with 50kms
a day, but you can
slowly build on
that. The biggest
challenges are other
ones.
What are the challenges
on such a
long distance trip?
Traveling by bike
means you are
always exposed.
There is no form of
protection or separation
from your
surroundings. It can
be the weather, the
people or any other
difficult situation
you might normally
be able to shelter
from – dealing with
those problems
head on is a necessity
of life on the
road. It’s important
to find strategies
to deal with your
own emotions and
discomforts. And
that is definitely
the biggest challenge
at times. You
need to love life on
the bike, with all its
up and downs and
the circumstances
that force you to
push beyond your
comfort zone.
How did you come
in contact with
Bombtrack?
It was half way
across the USA that
we realised that we
wanted to switch
from our classic
touring setup to a
bikepacking rig. We
were tired of just
45
iding on pavement, sharing roads with cars and we wanted to explore more remote
areas we were riding through, not to be held back by our bikes and luggage. This is
when we came across the ‘Beyond Plus’ from Bombtrack. The timing was perfect as
we managed to meet the Bombtrack Crew at the Interbike trade show in Las Vegas.
There we had the opportunity to talk and check out their bikes, soon after we
were rolling out of Vegas on our new Beyond Plus bikes. Needless to say, we were
amazed by their supportive and eager attitudes.
After being on the road for so long what has made you come back to Germany?
For the last five years, we have been traveling across the world - which sounds like
an absolute dream to many people, and indeed, it has been. We are super grateful
for all the amazing experiences and memories we have been able to make in that
time. However, all of that has not come without some sacrifices. When you are
always on the move you have to give up a many things. Our friends are always far
away, we constantly meet people and have to say ‘Goodbye’ again, that can be emotionally
draining. Everything we had built, we would have to tear down again. After
all this time on the road, we felt like we were craving a place where we can watch
things grow and establish a sustainable life for the future.
Aren’t you afraid
of not being able
to acclimatise to
daily, repeating
rhythm of “normal”
life? Will you miss
life on a bike, if so,
what do you think
will you miss most?
When we left
Germany in 2012,
we knew that we
did not want to
have a ‘normal life’
but we did not
know what our new
life would look
like. Maybe that
is why we decided
to travel. To see,
learn and explore
and maybe find our
own answers along
the way. And we
did. Now that we
are coming back,
we can feel more
confident than ever
that our attitude
towards life has not
changed. We have
formed a better
idea of how we want to live. So far we
plan to build a sustainable life around a
‘Tiny House’ in the countryside, maybe
grow some veggies and try to be in tune
with our surroundings and nature. We
still value experiences more than having
lots of money. So cycling will continue
to play an important part in our lives,
especially as we explore some of the
bikepacking routes throughout Europe.
What do you think will you miss most?
That is easy to answer. We both absolutely
love to be outside and camping
has always been one of our favorite
parts of traveling by bike. In the future
we will probably spend most of our time
sleeping indoors like most people do.
That will be difficult. We are going to
make an effort in the future to ‘escape’
every now and then back into the nature
and all the challenges and excitement
that brings.
What was your actual job before
leaving and exploring the globe and
will you go back to the same when you
return home?
Jona is a cabinet maker and his passion
for wood and quality woodwork goes a
long way. Franzi worked as a photographer
and she is equally passionate about
it. We both hope to combine our work,
with our love for the outdoors and cycling
in the future.
We hope to inspire others to travel by
bike and spend more time outdoors
in general, but especially while bikepacking.
Hopefully we can help others
prepare for longer trips like the one
we have done. This way we would like
to make it easier for people to understand
that you don’t need all the gear,
fitness, courage or resilience some
people believe you need to go on such
an adventure – it’s a lot less scary than
you would think.
Which platforms can we stay in touch
with you on as you approach this next
journey?
We’re not planning on stopping cycling
yet! So we will keep our website ‘Tales
On Tyres’ running so we can share
photos, stories and gear reviews. But
we also plan to build a platform for
sharing our new adventure of building
a ‘Tiny Home’ and living a sustainable
and conscious lifestyle. For people who
are interested in that, we will make sure
to share the details through ‘Tales On
Tyres’.
The Tempest range has been transformed for
2018. Striking graphics, focused geometry and
the addition of a carbon and women’s specific
model reflect the essence of modern road cycling.
Although utilizing steel for it’s frame,
the Tempest is truly a contemporary road
bike. Looking closely, the tapered head tube,
thru-axles and flat mount disc brakes are all
incorporated into this true machine of today.
Now exclusively in disc brake form, the Tempest
has been sharpened with new criterium
derived geometry, refocused and more aggressive.
Carrying on this repurposing, the Tempest
WMN brings the classic-meets-modern into a
women’s specific version. Utilising components
and adjusted geometry to ensure the most natural
ride and instinctive feel. The Tempest-C
carries the spirit of its steel siblings into a truly
futuristic form. More akin to a sci-fi spaceship
than a bike, this is one two-wheeled sculpture
demanding closer inspection and a turn of the
pedals.
The Tempest WMN is a brand
new model for 2018. Built from
Columbus Cromor tubing with
carefully selected profiles to
bring together a frame which is
stiff and responsive, yet light
and easy to place where you
want it. This base inspires confidence
in riding fast, holding
tighter lines through corners
and putting the power down
Originally conceived as a more traditional
road tourer the Audax has been transformed
into a vision for modern endurance road riding.
The starting point for the new direction
was switching the wheel platform from 700c to
the road-plus 650b. Thanks to the incredibly
smooth rolling Hunt Adventure disc wheels
used in combination with the WTB Horizon
TCS tires the Audax just eats up the miles. For
long distance riding, steel is undoubtedly the
best material for the job. Its natural resonance
dampens road buzz and produces a ride so compliant
that it’s more akin to floating than rolling.
The geometry has been revised for a less
touring and more sportive riding position. Such
geometry required shorter chainstays whilst retaining
tire and chainring clearance the result
of these factors led to the development of our
custom yoke, a standout feature on this incredible
bike.
The videos documenting our
bikes on our Vimeo and You-
Tube channels are becoming
a key pillar of explaining
our brand’s character and the
adventures we want our bikes
to take their owners on. You
might realise that behind most
of our recent video clips there’s
a Slovenian duo named “OSM
Films”. Their clips have gained
a lot respect and recognition on
social media and broader media,
from both the cycling community
and respected film makers.
The quality of the content, the
way the stories draw the viewer
in and the technical excellence
of the production are all a testament
to the skill and experience
of Tina and Blaž.
Who is OSM Films exactly, and where
are you from?
OSM films is a boutique video production
company from Ljubljana, Slovenia.
OSM is pronounced as ‘awesome’ in
English, but it also means number 8 in
Slovenian slang. Making a film always
requires a team, which is why we also
work with other creatives, including
Marko Šajn, who was responsible for
some of the graphics on the Bombtrack
films. However, at the heart of the
OSM team is us, Tina & Blaž.
Over the last couple of years there has
been a steady stream of OSM videos for
Bombtrack. These videos have focused
on the unique character of the bikes
and the types of riding they’re often
involved in.
Are you into cycling as well and how
deep is your interest into bikes?
Creating bike films - especially documentaries
- has been a dream come
true. When we met, I was working on
a personal project – a music documentary
and Blaž helped me a lot with the
filming. We soon realised film was our
language, something we loved to communicate
with.
The bike thing actually came about very
organically. Blaž had been riding for
years as a downhiller, he was always a
very keen cyclist and heavily involved
in the downhill scene. I helped him film
a few downhill events, but there was
always a vision for a more meaningful
story we could do within the cycling
scene. So one day we just started
talking about making our own bike
film with a much more focused vision
and story behind it. There’s always a
deeper, more interesting story in every
sport outside of the regular feats of
endurance or strength we see on TV. We
wanted to explore and show a beauty
of it, a connection between the rider,
their bike and the environment, in this
case. This is what we want to discover
with every film, no matter the genre or
subject matter.
What is your intentions when covering
an event – what do you pay most
attention to?
We always want to give more than our
best to it. This means we are incredibly
picky, especially in the post production
process where we often stumble upon
even more ideas. But there is a lot to
take in (and to give up) before the post
production process begins, which is why
we constantly follow trends and innovations
in filming, we read a lot and
try to educate ourselves on the newest
innovations and techniques.
One of the most important things for
us is to find the most engaging story.
If you strive to go deeper into the soul
of a cycling event, you gain an idea
many things that could be a part of the
story. We love to explore the details
and pieces of the story, but on the other
hand, we always strive for beautiful,
emotional, atmospheric and cinematic
shots of everything that’s occurs within
the frame; these are two things we pay
the most attention on.
How do you manage to chase the
riders, as several of your documentaries
have covered multi-day races? It’s
not necessarily easy and I imagine it’s
quite an effort to hunt for the perfect
shot. How do you manage it?
We have gotten used to the inevitably
nomadic life of filming documentary
style videos. We like to think we’re
adventurers at heart and we have fallen
in love with what we do and all of the
experiences and challenges that come
along with that. Fortunately, we have a
pretty big car which becomes our house,
horse and a helper on the road. During
the day we transform it into our little
moving office, while at night it becomes
our bed. With one of us is driving, the
other is frequently hanging out the
window filming. Or we might stop and
both help each other chase the perfect
frame. It can be exhausting and at the
end of the day we are both exhausted.
It is all made worthwhile when we get
to see unimaginable landscapes and
the even more impressive performances
made by the riders we have filmed become
immortalised on screen. Sometimes
we ask ourselves if it’s worthwhile
driving through 4x4 accessible rocky
mountain ranges, with the only things
for company being cows and marmots.
Yet the answer is always the same:
the job is always worth finishing and
finishing it right. All the hard work,
long days and sleepless nights are made
worthwhile when the film is finally
released – the sense of fulfillment that
comes when we feel we’ve captured the
essence of the story, the rider, the landscape
or the challenge.
What kind of equipment do you use?
For filming we use Sony FS7 and a7s
cameras, Rode mic, gimbal Movie M15,
slider, Manfrotto tripods, Hoya filters
and Canon lenses. While for photos we
use Canon 5D Mark III. The problem is
there is always better gear on the market
and it’s hard to resist adding more
to the kit.
“CREATING BIKE
FILMS - ESPECIALLY
DOCUMENTARIES -
HAS BEEN A DREAM
COME TRUE.”
actually never filmed a video like that
until we worked with the two guys. Following
that, the Torino-Nice Rally and
Haute Route were both fantastic experiences,
because of the gorgeous settings
of both videos and two completely
different kinds of rides they were. The
technical demands for filming both of
those videos were also quite distinctive,
we really enjoyed that challenge. We’re
really proud of our cut and a story behind
the Baja Divide: Jona and Franzi
did a great job of self-filming in the
middle of nowhere! Of course we must
not forget about Groundwork. A really
nice, more intimate project, because we
met all the people and friends behind
Bombtrack. You see, it’s hard to say
which one was the best.
What can we expect from OSM in
2018?
Our plans are constantly changing and
we have many ideas in our heads, but
unfortunately not enough time and
money to make them all a reality. At
the moment we are working on a series
of short documentary portraits of young
creatives. There is the road sibling of
our first Bombtrack film - Tuscany
Road - on the horizon in September.
And we would love to film one bike
packing adventure of our own. Either
where we are both riding and filming,
or one of us is riding and the other
filming. We have some ideas with
Neža, who rode Altravesur Route with
her Bombtrack Beyond, but we’ll see
what eventuates. Since it’s goning to
be 201(osm), we’re sure you can expect
something OSM! As we always say –
the best is yet to come.
How did you come in contact with
Bombtrack?
In 2015 we got ourselves into a personal
project called OSM Minutes of 2015.
The goal was to make a short - about
one minute - film every week. So we
did. We were filming week by week
and in December we decided to follow
Jernej Stibilj, Slovenian ambassador for
Bombtrack. We wanted to show how
life is always bright while riding a bike.
For the one minute clip we spent two
cold winter days filming and although
hard work, the result was beautiful! A
few days after the release of the ‘Upside
Down’ film Manuel from Bombtrack
contacted us and we were blown away
by his enthusiasm. It was ‘The best is
yet to come’ feeling! The rest is history.
But it was one of the best things that
happened to us through our OSM
project. Oh, and we still love to watch
Upside Down!
What has been your favourite project
for Bombtrack so far?
Hmm, that’s the hard one haha! Every
project for Bombtrack is ‘OSM’, because
they always present a different
challenge. The Tuscany Trail with Clem
Shovel and his companion Joachim
Roseland, was the first, and as a result,
probably the most memorable. We had
The name alone conjures up images of narrow
cobbled streets, ancient Collages and church
clocks chiming in the distance. Once you lay
eyes on an Oxbridge you see the picture is complete,
such clean lines and effortless style it
simply blends into its surroundings. Far from
being a homage to the vintage cycling era, the
Oxbridge is less velo-pastiche and more cycling
sophistication. Looking beyond the dark
metallic paint and into the fabric of the bike,
the Oxbridge is a daily companion. Made with
quality materials and components means the
Oxbridge can be used all year round, be it a city
commuting or relaxed weekend jollies.
63
Finished in a deep metallic
British Racing Green, with polished
components and leather
saddle, the Oxbridge is understated
yet oozing style. Designed
for cruising in style, the
simple single speed drivetrain
is easy to maintain, meaning
you can just relax and enjoy the
ride. The comfortable riding
position keeps you
more upright to
observe what’s going
on around you,
ideal when mixing
with the traffic.
Color-coded alloy
fenders are rattle-free
and keep you dry when
the weather inevitably
takes a turn for the
worse.
As the last word in the epitome
of style, the Oxbridge Geared
adds the silky smooth Shimano
Tiagra 10-speed derailleur
and 11-28t cassette to take the
hard work, out of the unavoidable
hills. The old is married to
the new, with the classic down
Compe. Keeping everything
rolling smoothly,
the Drome hubs
feature sealed bearings
and the 28c
Introduced in 2017 the Outlaw was an instant
hit, thanks to its oversized tires combined with
the clean lines of the steel tubing, and ‘those
looks’. Using the ‘Road Plus’ concept with a
650B rim combined with a large volume tire, the
benefit of a more comfortable ride is achieved.
Blending the geometry of road and urban, with
steep head and seat tube angles but a higher
stack height, longer wheelbase and trail gives
the Outlaw its stable yet engaging ride. For
2018 the Outlaw is split into two versions. The
Outlaw 1 uses a single-speed belt drive setup
whilst the Outlaw 2 combines its belt drive with
the Shimano Nexus internal geared hub, just to
help out when things get a little hilly. The café
racer inspired looks are retained, and combined
with the wide bar bringing a little extra control
and presence to this urban prowler.
Using a full crmo tube set with
double-butted front triangle,
tapered head tube and sliding
dropouts, the Outlaw 1 has a
frame packed with features. The
coupler in the seat stay allows
the Gates Carbon belt drive
access into the frame, so that
it may drive the Title-disc rear
hub. Rack and fender mounts
in addition to removable cable
guides mean there is always
scope for upgrades and modification
to suit whatever daily
errands the Outlaw is tasked
with.

At the core of the Outlaw 2
is the Columbus Cromor double-butted
frame, ideally suited
to the urban environment
thanks to its balance of durability
and lower weight. Welded
into a geometry that inspires
fun and fast riding thanks to
its stability and direct handling,
riding round town has
never been such a blast. The
Gates Carbon belt drive replaces
the chain, for an oil and dirt
free commute, and the Nexus
8-speed internal hub
offers more usability
whilst maintaining those
clean lines
The Needle fist leapt of the drawing board and
into battle on the fixed-gear racing scene back
in 2015. Continuously being tweaked and adjusted
since then, the bike has become something
of a benchmark for a fixed criterium race
bike. Opting for steel over aluminium or carbon
was always the starting point. With race
surfaces being far from ‘butter’ smooth the
importance for the bike to remain in contact
with the ground is paramount in holding a line
through the tight corners. The inherent ‘give’
of steel can be engineered and controlled in the
frame design to help absorb the bumps keeping
the rider in full control. Knowing the bike will
respond predictably through the corners inspires
confidence to commit to a line, and take
it faster with every lap. Over the past few years
the Needle has proved itself not only in domestic
races, but also on the world stage of the Red
Hook Crit series.
75
The Needle uses a criterium
race geometry developed
through collaboration with
TeamWIT. A higher BB gives
the Needle the ability to corner
lower, allowing for the fastest
line to be taken through every
corner. The Columbus Cromor
double-butted front triangle
is used for for its lightweight
yet durable properties, ideal
when crashes are common. The
carbon fork with deep section
blades and tapered
alloy steerer tube
help the Needle
slice through the
field, whilst the
SRAM Omnium
crankset allows
for a smooth and
efficient power
delivery.
CREDITS
Bombtrack wouldn’t be what it is today without the
help, support and pure hardwork from our friends, riders
and ambassadors. Producing a bike is only part of the
story, putting them into the right light, showing what
they’re capable of and the places they can take you is
quite another. It is for this reason that we have to give
thanks for all the beautiful photos in this catalog, taken
