The age we start school,<br />

the age our parents let us<br />

out into the world.<br />

It’s been a big six years<br />

for Bombtrack – what<br />

began as a little fixedgear<br />

brand has turned into<br />

something much bigger. A<br />

company producing bikes<br />

for just about any terrain<br />

that can be ridden.<br />

So what’s on our first<br />

report card? The bikes<br />

continued exploring new<br />

parts of the world.<br />

Carrying our friend Marc<br />

Maurer onwards around<br />

the world, his A Journey<br />

Beyond odyssey saw him<br />

seeking out adventure<br />

in Kyrgyzstan. Joachim<br />

Rosenlund completed the<br />

gruelling Highland Trail<br />

550 in Scotland, while<br />

closer to home Clem<br />

Shovel crossed Germany<br />

as the third fastest rider<br />

at the Trans Germany<br />

race. Taking the Bombtrack<br />

show on the road,<br />

our supported events the<br />

Dirty Reiver in Great<br />

Britain, Tuscany Trail in<br />

Italy, and Dirty Boar in<br />

Belgium have also brought<br />

our bikes and lust for<br />

adventure to the masses.<br />

With the signing of our<br />

newest team member<br />

Gosse van der Meer we’ve<br />

also poked a muddy toe<br />

into the elite European<br />

one of our entirely new<br />

line of race-ready<br />

cyclo-cross bikes.<br />

Named the Tension, the<br />

Tension 1 and Tension 2<br />

share the same all-new,<br />

alloy frame featuring<br />

geometry inspired by our<br />

former Hook AL cyclo-cross<br />

bike and rendered<br />

with bang-up-to-date hydroforming<br />

technology. At<br />

the head of the pack, the<br />

top-tier Tension 3 represents<br />

the rebirth of our<br />

carbon cyclo-cross chassis<br />

– built without compromise<br />

for the toughest of<br />

courses.<br />

Also new this year, the<br />

popularity of our revised<br />

road-plus Audax last year<br />

has inspired an aluminium<br />

cousin – the Audax AL.<br />

Featuring an innovative<br />

bottom bracket and<br />

chainstay assembly, it allows<br />

us to package robust<br />

650b wheels and 47c wide<br />

tyres, mudguards, road<br />

cranks, and “snappy”<br />

handling into a slinky<br />

package. Simultaneously,<br />

its hydroformed tubing<br />

and intelligent butting<br />

redefine the comfort and<br />

reckon it’s the most radical<br />

Bombtrack to date.<br />

Constantly refining our<br />

bikes, we’re also excited<br />

to apply the tough T47<br />

bottom bracket system<br />

to most of our range for<br />

<strong>2019</strong>. The threaded T47<br />

standard helps us continue<br />

pushing the boundaries of<br />

what’s possible with steel<br />

frames by allowing the use<br />

of oversized tubing and<br />

providing for even more<br />

tyre clearance. And all<br />

while ensuring silent<br />

operation and bulletproof<br />

reliability for years to<br />

caught up with the moustachioed<br />

Dutchman<br />

to find<br />

out<br />

what<br />

makes<br />

him tick.<br />

Cyclocross is quite an exotic sport, how did you get involved with it,<br />

and why did you decide to make it your speciality?<br />

I was lucky to be living a few kilometres away from where they held<br />

a yearly pro cyclocross race. The event in Surhuisterveen was always<br />

around New Year’s Day, and my dad went every year to watch. He<br />

wasn’t a big cycling enthusiast, but there isn’t a lot happening in the region<br />

where I grew up, so everyone goes anyway. From when I was little<br />

I was standing there with my<br />

small boots in the mud and<br />

I saw the guys completely<br />

covered in mud riding and<br />

running through it. As a little<br />

kid, I was always outside playing<br />

and getting dirty, which<br />

my mom didn’t always like. I<br />

knew that one day I wanted<br />

to compete in this race.<br />

What’s your day job, and<br />

how do you balance it with<br />

riding?<br />

I ride full-time. Normally<br />

I train around 20 hours a<br />

week. Also, I need to keep<br />

my kit in good shape, clean<br />

my house, and of course cook<br />

lots of food. In the end, there<br />

isn’t much time left because I<br />

travel so much. Besides riding<br />

I study geography, which I<br />

really like. I can graduate next<br />

year, but I have to see how<br />

much spare time I have for<br />

my thesis, otherwise, I’ll need<br />

to take some extra for my<br />

studies.<br />

As a Cyclocross professional you have a different set-up than your<br />

competitors on the big teams. What was the intention in registering<br />

your own team?<br />

As a rider who’s also ridden for a regular team I can say the difference<br />

isn’t that big. As a professional, you rely on the people around you.<br />

Every rider has his own mechanic in the pitlane and most also have a<br />

swannie (masseur and general helper) too. The rider and the mechanic<br />

are the team. If you have a contract<br />

with a big squad the only difference is<br />

that there are people riding around you<br />

with the same bikes and clothing. Also,<br />

you can go on training camps or do<br />

road races with your teammates. But<br />

when riding for a team with a fixed<br />

structure you’re stuck with its program.<br />

A Belgian team will have Belgian<br />

sponsors and it’ll want you to race in<br />

Belgium. That’s all quite logical, but<br />

as a rider, I am not afraid to travel and<br />

ride all over the world. When I started<br />

my own team I had complete freedom.<br />

My sponsors come from all over<br />

Europe so I don’t have to stay in one<br />

country and I’m able to enter the races<br />

that suit me best.<br />

What are the advantages and disadvantages<br />

of riding on your own?<br />

The big advantage is the ability to ride<br />

wherever and whenever you want. I do<br />

less racing now so I can invest more<br />

in training and get my body and mind<br />

completely ready for the cyclocross<br />

season. When you’re in a team and one<br />

of your teammates is sick or injured<br />

you have to jump in and race. Then<br />

you have to change the program again,<br />

train less, race more. For some riders,<br />

it’s good to race a lot, but for me, it’s<br />

better to train and keep making solid<br />

steps and improve. Racing makes you<br />

stronger if you do it at the right times,<br />

but racing continuously will damage<br />

your body. And a cyclocross season<br />

with 30-35 races ridden like that will<br />

be heavy. The only problem with riding<br />

for yourself is that you can’t start in big<br />

road races because you always need to<br />

get in with a team. I’m riding for an<br />

elite club team this year and was able<br />

to do some stage races in France. But<br />

the difference in racing is really big<br />

when you come back from the UCI<br />

racing scene and doing TV races on<br />

the road. Cyclocross or mountain bike<br />

racing is more of an individual sport<br />

than road racing, it’s easier to race off<br />

road for yourself than on the road.<br />

Do you manage to make a living from<br />

racing?<br />

Surviving from racing is always hard.<br />

I’m happy to have the financial help<br />

from my sponsors and a scholarship at<br />

my university as an athlete. If you have<br />

to rely completely on racing the danger<br />

is racing too much. Now I do all my<br />

races in preparation for the CX season.<br />

I’m not out there risking a crash in the<br />

last two laps of a criterium chasing a<br />

top ten. In the Netherlands, you can<br />

sometimes race every day, so if you win<br />

on a Monday, by Tuesday everybody<br />

has forgotten. If I can win I will always<br />

try. I start every race for the win but I<br />

don’t risk crashing or injuring myself<br />

before the cyclocross season.<br />

What’s been your biggest achievement<br />

in cycling so far?<br />

My first race in the Dutch team’s<br />

orange skinsuit at the World Championships<br />

was a special one. But so<br />

too was when I won a national race as<br />

a completely unknown guy with one<br />

aluminium and one steel bike. My<br />

third place in the mythical Koppenbergcross<br />

is something I’m still proud<br />

of. Or my National Championship<br />

medal. In the five years I’ve been racing<br />

I’ve won around 40-50 races. When<br />

you’re winning it feels strangely logical<br />

because you know all the effort you put<br />

in. But if I look back now on races I’ve<br />

won some years ago then it makes me<br />

realise what I actually achieved that<br />

day.<br />

Your Cyclocross <strong>2019</strong>-season will<br />

start in September 2018, which series<br />

will you be taking part in?<br />

I’ll be racing the entire EKZ Cross-<br />

Tour in Switzerland again, and I hope<br />

to be selected for all the European<br />

World Cups too. In the free weekends,<br />

I’ll be looking all over Europe to<br />

compete in the races that suit me. I’ll<br />

be starting in some of the best races<br />

in Belgium like Gavere, Zonhoven,<br />

Koppenberg etc. But I’d also like to<br />

race in England, Italy, Czech Republic,<br />

and the two UCI races in Germany. It<br />

depends heavily on the possibilities to<br />

come and compete. When I can come<br />

I will race!<br />

What’s your biggest goal for the near<br />

future?<br />

My big goal is one which I’ve had for<br />

a long time - I want to win a professional<br />

CX race. As soon as I made the<br />

step to riding internationally it was my<br />

goal to one day win those races. Every<br />

year I’ve got closer. I’ve always been a<br />

very solid rider who’s able to gain good<br />

What’s your background in cycling and how did you find your way to<br />

the Bombtrack family?<br />

Clare: I used to ride bikes a lot when I was younger, nothing too serious,<br />

just for fun. During school and college, I was competing in track<br />

and field events and concentrating on my athletics. I’ve only gotten<br />

back into cycling within the last two years or so and have found a<br />

passion for bikepacking and exploring on two wheels.<br />

Matty: Bikes have been my life for as long as I can remember. I’ve ridden<br />

all sorts from BMX to fixed-gears and downhill mountain bikes.<br />

Over the last few years touring has sunk its teeth into me as I like<br />

the freedom to go where you want and ride what you want. I bought<br />

a Bombtrack Beyond in 2016 and cycled around Tasmania, and then<br />

from Greece back to the UK. From there I knew if we were going to<br />

plan another big trip, it would have to be on a Bombtrack. The fact that<br />

the brand is a small, rider run operation really appeals to us, especially<br />

myself coming from a do-it-yourself<br />

BMX background.<br />

You’ve just begun a two-year trip,<br />

where will you be heading?<br />

Clare: We’re cherry picking the countries<br />

we’ve wanted to visit for a long<br />

time. These include Norway, Spain,<br />

Nepal, Australia, and New Zealand. It’s<br />

going to take us roughly eight months<br />

of pedalling. After that, we may work a<br />

little and then continue on the journey.<br />

I’ve been looking forward to the Annapurna<br />

Circuit in Nepal, which will be a<br />

healthy challenge in the beauty of the<br />

Himalayas.<br />

Matty: My grandad toured around<br />

Norway in the 1950’s, so it’s cool to<br />

go and see the roads he travelled on as<br />

I’ve all his old photographs as reference<br />

points. After New Zealand, we’re then<br />

looking to fly into Kyrgyzstan and<br />

cycle through Central Asia and back<br />

to the UK. I suppose this is inspired<br />

by Marc Maurer’s epic trips. But, who<br />

knows, the possibilities are endless.<br />

Do you have a particular approach to<br />

bikepacking? What are your expectations<br />

for the trip?<br />

Clare: We’re both keen photographers<br />

and artists so I’d like to pedal slow<br />

and steady, take in my surroundings,<br />

the beautiful views, and sketch a few<br />

drawings along the route. We’re hoping<br />

to cover 30-40 km per day but this may<br />

change according to the terrain we face.<br />

Matty: I’m super stoked to see new<br />

landscapes and meet fantastic people<br />

as you always do on these kinds of<br />

trips. It’ll be a fun challenge as we’ll be<br />

trying to film the trip and that’s a new<br />

angle for me. I’m sure some days are<br />

going to be unreal and some days will<br />

be very tough, but I think we’re both<br />

pretty easy-going and up to the challenge.<br />

We set the 30-40 km per day<br />

limit as that allows us to see so much,<br />

not be in a rush, and if we do more we<br />

can have days off. We won’t be breaking<br />

distance records anytime soon.<br />

What was the motivation behind<br />

leaving home to live on your bikes for<br />

such a long time?<br />

Clare: I have a huge passion for travel.<br />

My job as a teacher has allowed me to<br />

pack my bags and get away somewhere<br />

each half-term, but I’ve always wanted<br />

to go on a longer trip. Bikepacking is<br />

perfect for me because you’re self-sufficient,<br />

it’s fun and also pretty affordable<br />

when travelling for long periods of<br />

time. The bike allows you to experience<br />

the journey in a raw and unique way.<br />

Matty: Bikes are my world. The<br />

thought of travelling on a bike always<br />

fills me with uncontainable joy. Life’s<br />

so easy on a tour, all you have to sort<br />

out is where you’re going, what you’re<br />

going to eat, and where you need to<br />

camp. Beats my day job hands down! I<br />

also love experiencing new cultures and<br />

seeing the gradual shift in scenery that<br />

comes with travelling at riding pace.<br />

What will life be like once you’re back<br />

home? Have you planned for what<br />

might come next?<br />

Clare & Matty: We haven’t talked too<br />

much about it apart from the fact that<br />

we’d like to adopt a lurcher named<br />

Roscoe. Also, we’ve several friends<br />

living in vans which seems like the best<br />

of both home and travelling. Yorkshire<br />

will always be home for us as it’s where<br />

our families and friends are, but who<br />

knows what opportunities will arise<br />

abroad.<br />

When did you start cycling and what kind of riding are you most<br />

into?<br />

At university, I approached the bicycle accidentally. Age 23 my mother<br />

gave me my first bike, it was a Rockrider mountain bike that cost €169.<br />

It was a turning point in my life. Since that day when I began pedalling<br />

I’ve not stopped. In the beginning, I started exploring the territory<br />

around me. I saw the peak of a mountain and I set myself the goal of<br />

reaching it. A few months<br />

later I faced my first trip - a<br />

month in Sardinia. Even<br />

now I have this same spirit.<br />

What’s your company<br />

AdventureLab?<br />

AdventureLab grew from<br />

the fire I have inside. I’m<br />

a geologist and an expert<br />

in geographic information<br />

systems. I was working on<br />

construction projects, at a<br />

certain point I realised my<br />

work didn’t make me happy.<br />

I decided to immerse<br />

myself in the adventure<br />

world, especially bikepacking,<br />

and transform my<br />

passions into a company<br />

organising sporting events.<br />

What led to you setting up<br />

the Tuscany Trail ride?<br />

In 2012 I opened bikepacking.it, a small community of bikepacking<br />

enthusiasts. Speaking with my girlfriend Olga, I told her I’d like to<br />

organise a bike ride in Tuscany to meet the people who were animating<br />

the website’s forum. Initially just for the forum users, in 2014 I publicly<br />

launched the Tuscany Trail one of the first mass unsupported bicycle<br />

adventures. The inaugural edition featured a challenging route. At the<br />

time we were just bikepacking nerds, the Transcontinental Race had<br />

only done one edition, and off-road in<br />

Europe the Highland Trail 550 was also<br />

only on its first running.<br />

How would you describe the event<br />

and the intention behind it?<br />

Describing the Tuscany Trail in a nutshell<br />

is really difficult. In theory, it’s a<br />

simple dirt route that the riders take on<br />

in a self-sufficient manner. In practice,<br />

it’s a real adventure through Tuscany,<br />

which is one of the most beautiful<br />

places in the world.<br />

How has the event developed over the<br />

last few years?<br />

In recent years the Tuscany Trail has<br />

experienced exponential success. In<br />

the fifth edition there were almost 800<br />

riders from more than 30 countries. It<br />

was amazing. The event has maintained<br />

the characteristics that make it<br />

unique, but has also had to adapt to the<br />

requirements of managing such a large<br />

mass of people. The roads in Tuscany<br />

are a perfectly matched to the trend for<br />

gravel, making the event a worldwide<br />

reference point for the sector. Fortunately,<br />

interest in bikepacking is developing<br />

more and more across the world.<br />

I’m glad to think that the Tuscany Trail<br />

has played a part. The thing I’m most<br />

proud of is that although the number<br />

of participants has increased, the spirit<br />

has remained the same as in that first<br />

year. People feel the need to escape and<br />

it gives them the chance to do it.<br />

Is the Tuscany Trail a social tour or an<br />

unsupported bikepacking race?<br />

The Tuscany Trail is not a race, I’ll<br />

never tire of repeating it. If some<br />

people come for a race, that’s their<br />

problem. The format is free. There’s no<br />

final classification, there’s no time limit.<br />

Each person participates in the spirit<br />

that most pleases them. I believe 5%<br />

of the riders come to compete, 20% to<br />

test themselves, 50% to experience a<br />

complete adventure, and the rest just<br />

want a holiday.<br />

How long do the fastest and slowest<br />

riders take to complete the route?<br />

The fastest riders take one and a half<br />

days to finish, while the slowest can<br />

take a week. The quickest don’t even<br />

sleep, while the slower ones get to<br />

explore all the restaurants, vineyards,<br />

farms, and swim spots along the way!<br />

What do you think is the main reason<br />

people are attracted to the Tuscany<br />

Trail event?<br />

The Tuscany Trail is the biggest<br />

bikepacking event in Europe. Part of<br />

its success is in the organisation, but<br />

also that I put at the disposal of the<br />

participants my 12 years of experience<br />

pedalling around Tuscany. The itinerary<br />

is really beautiful. You cross historical<br />

centres like Florence, Siena, and San<br />

Gimignano. You discover little-known<br />

beauties like Pitigliano and Sorano.<br />

You explore regions like the Val<br />

d’Orcia that leave you with your mouth<br />

open and finish up pedalling next to<br />

the crystal clear sea of Monte Argentario.<br />

As a side dish, you have Tuscany<br />

where you can eat delicious things<br />

and drink the best wine in the world.<br />

Then there are the Tuscans with their<br />

hospitality. And finally, you do all this<br />

together with hundreds of participants<br />

from all over the world.<br />

How are you keeping the event interesting<br />

for riders who’ve already taken<br />

part previously?<br />

Honestly, for cycling, Tuscany has no<br />

equal. You never get tired of riding<br />

here. In fact, there are many people<br />

who come back again and again. Every<br />

year the route is reworked to provide<br />

the right mix of paths and dirt roads,<br />

new climbs, historical centres, and<br />

natural scenery.<br />

What’s the best type of bike and<br />

equipment for the ride?<br />

Equipment choice is very subjective<br />

and every person has to decide on it<br />

according to how they want to ride<br />

the Tuscany Trail. Some days will be<br />

intense. I wouldn’t pick the quickest<br />

bicycle, but instead use one that makes<br />

you feel comfortable. For shelter, just<br />

bring a sleeping bag and try at least<br />

one night to sleep under the stars. Save<br />

the energy bars for racing and stop to<br />

eat the typical dishes of Tuscan cuisine.<br />

With regards to equipment, you must<br />

be prepared for possible mishaps, but<br />

you’ll also find many inhabited places<br />

along the way.<br />
