MATERIAL GIRL
There’s a growing collection of local
businesses flying the flag for ecofriendly
furniture and accessories.
Tribe Dubai (tribedubai.com), located
in The Courtyard in Al Quoz, only uses
biodegradable materials and avoids those
obtained through deforestation. Plus, its
products only feature all-natural dyes.
Its founder Jo England lists bamboo
and rattan as top sustainable choices.
“Bamboo is one of the eco-friendliest
products out there as it grows quickly
and is ideal for furniture, bowls, plates
and storage. Look for handcrafted pieces
that stand the test of time while also
hugely benefiting the communities in
which they were made.”
Similarly, Home and Soul
(homeandsouldubai.com), located in
Al Wasl, is incorporating sustainable
materials into each new collection to add
to its existing line-up of pieces made
from ethically-sourced materials.
“We source globally and work with
enterprises that are committed to using
sustainable materials, and not producing
in sweatshops,” says founder, Carol
Sukkar. “We need to take collective
responsibility to save our planet and
purchasing sustainable pieces is a small
but impactful stride you can make in
your home.”
Chair, Dhs295 from IKEA, is a woodplastic
composite containing wood
fibre waste; Halle Vase, Dhs175 and
Cirebon Basket, Dhs250, both from
Home & Soul
The Blueair JOY S,
Dhs699, is ideal for
compact living spaces,
CLEARING
THE AIR
Keeping your indoor air quality in
check will help to create a healthier
environment. A major cause of indoor air
pollution is volatile organic compounds
(VOCs), which are emitted as gases from
a variety of household products, such as
paint, carpeting and laminated furniture.
Keep a lid on it by getting an air purifier
that’ll help to trap airborne pollutants
and remove allergens from the air. Next,
consider swapping chemical cleaning
agents for eco-friendly alternatives. Local
maid service Eco Clean (ecoclean.ae) will
make your home sparkle using all-natural
products. “Our main priority is to improve
the air quality and hygiene in our clients’
homes while protecting the environment,”
says operations manager Sevda Garaeva.
“We use only non-toxic, environmentally
certified products.”
