Troparion 

Year A 

I was adorned, O Son of God, at Baptism with your rich gifts of 

grace; but I have loved instead the poverty of unbelief, and in my 

misery I have become a stranger to the virtues. I have wandered 

away into a far country of sin; but draw me back now, I pray, my 

Saviour, and embrace me, protecting me with your holy Cross for life 

eternal. Amen. 

Year B 

I am like the man who fell among thieves, O Son of God and Master 

of all, for I have fallen among my sins and have been cruelly wounded 

by them. Yet leave me not without healing, O Lord, who came not 

from faithless Samaria but from the pure Virgin. O Jesus, name that 

means salvation, have mercy upon me and save me. Amen. 

Year C 

The grace of abstinence, radiant with the light of God, shines upon us 

this day more brightly than the sun; illuminating our souls it drives 

away the clouds of sinful passions. Embracing it with joy, let us run 

with good courage the course of the season of Lent now set before 

us; and filled with gladness, let us cry to Christ: Sanctify those who 

persevere in repentance and faith, O loving Lord. Amen.

Second Sunday of Lent 

Troparion 

Year A 

To those who venerate the Cross of Christ with all their heart, it is a 

restraint on every lust and a law of abstinence. Looking ever upon 

him who on the Cross was crucified, let us crucify the flesh with its 

passions and desires. Let us become one with him who by suffering 

his Passion set us free from the passions; and let us ever praise him 

for his boundless love and mercy. Amen. 

Year B 

O worshipful assembly of the angels, O wondrous choir of saints, 

pray fervently to the loving Saviour: may he give us strength to 

complete without stumbling the lenten fast, and may he grant us 

victory over our spiritual enemies. Amen. 

Year C 

Like the blind man, I call upon you O Lord from my heart: Son of 

God, give light to the eyes of my spirit. Again, like the faithful woman 

of Canaan I cry to you: Have mercy on me, compassionate Saviour, 

for my soul is vexed by the demon of self-pleasing. But do you free it 

from the darkness of the passions, and enable me to live hereafter in 

purity of heart, that I may ever glorify your loving-kindness. Amen.

Third Sunday of Lent 

Troparion 

Year A 

Most glorious is the grace of this holy fast which you have ordained 

O Lord for our repentance. Through it Moses received the tables of 

the law, and the prophet Elijah found the chariot of fire, Daniel was 

exalted, and Elisha raised the dead; the Three Children quenched the 

fire, and all men are reconciled to God. Rejoicing in this dispensation 

let us cry aloud: Blessed are you, O Christ our God, for this great 

mercy, glory to you. Amen. 

Year B 

We praise your life-giving Cross, O Lord, and your holy sufferings in 

the flesh for our sake: the mockery and spitting, the blows and 

buffetings, the purple robe and crown of thorns, and the spear and 

death, by which you have redeemed us and saved us from the curse 

of the law. Therefore we beseech you: Grant us to complete this our 

lenten season of repentance. Amen. 

Year C 

Having strayed from your narrow way, O Lord, through following my 

passions, in my wretchedness I have fallen headlong into the pit. The 

Levite and the priest passing by turned from me in disdain, and you 

alone O Christ have taken pity on me. Tearing up the record of my 

sins by the weapon of the Cross, you have freed me from the 

passions and raised me in glory, enthroning me beside the Father. 

And so I cry: O Christ whose mercy is beyond my understanding, 

glory to you. Amen.

Fourth Sunday of Lent 

Troparion 

Year A 

With your unsleeping eye, look upon me and take pity on me, O 

Lord; for I am held fast by the drowsiness of sloth as I lie upon the 

bed of my passions, a slave to the sleep of sensual comfort. In your 

great mercy O Christ you have bowed your head upon the Cross, 

and of your own will you have arisen from the sleep of death. By this 

means you have driven back the night of sin, and have become for us 

the light of righteousness. Amen. 

Year B 

Stretched and slain upon the Cross, O Christ, you have slain the old 

serpent our enemy, and those killed by his sting you have restored to 

life. Therefore I entreat you, O Saviour: Give life to my deadened 

soul as I turn to you the hope of eternal glory. Amen. 

Year C 

O Christ, the life of all, you were hung upon the wood of the Cross; 

restore to life my soul, slain by sins, that I perish not utterly. I have 

rebelled against your commandments, and wasted the wealth of 

graces you have given me. Living as the prodigal I have grown 

loathsome, but bring me to repentance and renew me, for you alone 

are full of mercy. Amen.

Fifth Sunday of Lent 

Troparion 

Year A 

Grant swift and sure encouragement to your servants, O Jesus, when 

our spirits are cast down within us. Leave not our souls in affliction, 

and be not far from us in time of trouble, but always come quickly to 

our help. Draw near to us, for you are everywhere, even as you were 

ever with your apostles, and in your compassion unite yourself with 

those who love you, that with one accord we may ever praise and 

glorify you in the Holy Spirit. Amen. 

Year B 

When you were crucified in the flesh, O Lord, you crucified our 

fallen nature with yourself; and when your side was pierced with a 

spear, you pierced the serpent that seduced mankind. Nail my flesh 

with godly fear and wound my heart with your love, I pray; so that 

gazing on your passion and repenting of my sins, I may offer you a 

humble sacrifice of contrition, O you Lover of mankind. Amen. 

Year C 

We worship you, O loving Lord, beseeching you to pardon our 

transgressions; for of your own free will you mounted the Cross in 

our human flesh, so as to deliver from bondage to Satan those whom 

you had fashioned. Therefore in thanksgiving we cry out to you: O 

Christ our God, you filled all things with joy when you came to save 

the world. Amen. 


Palm Sunday 

Troparion 

He who sits upon the throne of the cherubim, for our sake sits today 

upon an ass; and coming to his freely willed passion, he hears the 

children cry, Hosanna! With the crowd we all reply, O Son of David, 

make haste to save those you have created, since for this cause you 

have come, O blessed Jesus, that we may know your glory. Amen.
