First Sunday of Lent
Troparion
Year A (cf Romans 5:15-16)
Brethren, if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have
the grace of God, and the free gift in the grace of that one man Jesus
Christ abounded for many. And the free gift is not like the effect of
that one man’s trespass. For the judgement following one trespass
brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses
brings justification. Amen.
Year B (cf I Peter 3:18-19)
Beloved, Christ died for sins, once for all, the righteous for the
unrighteous, that he might bring us to God. He was put to death in
the flesh, but made alive in the Spirit, in which he went and preached
to the spirits in prison. Amen.
Year C (cf Romans 10:8-9)
Brethren, the word of God is near you, on your lips and in your
heart (that is, the word of faith which we preach); because if you
confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart
that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Amen.
Second Sunday of Lent
Troparion
Year A (cf Romans 4:13-15)
Brethren, the promise to Abraham and his descendants that they
should inherit the world, did not come through the law, but through
the righteousness of faith. If it is the adherents of the law who are to
be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void. For the law brings
wrath, but where there is no law there is no transgression. Amen.
Year B (cf Romans 4:22-25)
Brethren, the faith of Abraham who believed in the promise of God
was ‘reckoned to him as righteousness.’ But the words, ‘it was
reckoned to him,’ were not written for his sake alone, but for ours
also. It will be reckoned to us who believe in him that raised from the
dead Jesus our Lord, who was put to death for our trespasses and
raised for our justification. Amen.
Year C (cf Philippians 3:20 – 4:1)
Beloved, our commonwealth is in heaven, and from it we await a
Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will change our lowly body to be
like his glorious body, by the power which enables him to subdue all
things to himself. Therefore, my brethren, stand firm thus in the
Lord. Amen.
Turn to page 9 for the Incensing Psalms
5

Third Sunday of Lent
Troparion
Year A (cf Romans 5:1-2, 5)
Brethren, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God
through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have obtained access
to this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in our hope of sharing
the glory of God; and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s
love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who
has been given to us. Amen.
Year B (cf I Corinthians 1:18-19)
Brethren, the word of the Cross is folly to those who are perishing,
but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is
written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the cleverness of
the clever I will thwart.” Amen.
Year C (cf I Corinthians 10:12-13)
Brethren, let any one who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall.
No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God
is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your strength;
but with the temptation will also provide the way of escape, that you
may be able to endure it. Amen.
Turn to page 9 for the Incensing Psalms
6

Fourth Sunday of Lent
Troparion
Year A (cf Ephesians 5:8-10, 13)
Brethren, once you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord;
walk as children of light, and try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord.
When anything is illumined by the light it becomes visible, for
anything that becomes visible is light. Amen.
Year B
(cf Ephesians 2:4-8a)
God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved
us, even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive
together with Christ, and raised us up with him, and made us sit with
him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus; that in the coming ages he
might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness towards
us in Christ Jesus; for by grace you have been saved by faith. Amen.
Year C (cf II Corinthians 5:17-19)
If anyone is in Christ he is a new creation; the old has passed away,
behold, the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ
reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation;
that is, God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself, not
counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the
message of reconciliation. Amen.
Turn to page 9 for the Incensing Psalms
7

Fifth Sunday of Lent
Troparion
Year A
(cf Romans 8:9b-11)
Brethren, anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not
belong to him; but if Christ is in you, although your bodies are dead
because of sin, your spirits are alive because of righteousness. If the
Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who
raised Christ Jesus from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies
also through his Spirit who dwells in you. Amen.
Year B (cf Hebrews 5:7-10)
In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications,
with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from
death, and he was heard for his godly fear. Although he was a Son, he
learned obedience through what he suffered; and being made perfect
he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him, being
designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek.
Amen.
Year C (cf Philippians 3:8, 10-11)
Brethren, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth
of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss
of all things, that I may know him, and share in his sufferings;
becoming like him in his death, that if possible I may attain to the
resurrection of the dead. Amen.
Turn to page 9 for the Incensing Psalms
Palm Sunday
Troparion
Two of the disciples, in fulfilment of prophecy, are sent to bring the
foal of an ass to the Master of all, and he who is borne on high by the
host of the seraphim comes riding on a colt. Now all-devouring
death, the ruler of this world, begins to be afraid; for, through
Lazarus first of all, he is being despoiled of mankind. Amen.
-v`*~vvvÓv^vvvÓvvvv5vvvvv6vvvvv7vvvvvv]vvvvÓv^vvvÓvvvv5vvvvv4vvvvv3vvvvv}
Psalm 141
O Lord, I call to you; come to me quickly; *
hear my voice when I cry to you.
Let my prayer be set forth in your sight as incense, *
the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.
Set a watch before my mouth, O Lord, and guard the door of my lips; *
let not my heart incline to any evil thing.
-v`*~vvvv3vvvvvvv4vvvvvvvvvv6vvvvvvvvvbbvvv7vvvvvvvvv6vvvvvv4vvvvvvbbvv3vvvvvvv2vvvvvvv3vvvvbbv3vvvvvvvvvv}
Let my prayer come before you like incense.
Let me not be occupied in wickedness with evildoers, *
nor eat of their choice foods.
Let the righteous smite me in friendly rebuke;
let not the oil of the unrighteous anoint my head; *
for my prayer is continually against their wicked deeds.
Let their rulers be overthrown in stony places, *
that they may know my words are true.
As when a ploughman turns over the earth in furrows, *
let their bones be scattered at the mouth of the grave.
Let my prayer come before you like incense.
But my eyes are turned to you, Lord God; *
in you I take refuge; do not strip me of my life.
Protect me from the snare which they have laid for me *
and from the traps of the evildoers.
Let the wicked fall into their own nets, *
while I myself escape.
Psalm 117
Let my prayer come before you like incense.
Praise the Lord, all you nations; *
laud him, all you peoples.
For his loving-kindness toward us is great, *
and the faithfulness of the Lord endures for ever. Alleluia.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be for ever. Amen.
Officiant
All
Lighten our darkness, we beseech you, O Lord,
and of your great mercy defend us from all perils
and dangers of this night,
for the love of your only Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ.
Amen.
Now let us all with one accord,
In fellowship with ages past,
Keep vigil with our heavenly Lord,
In his temptation and his fast.
The covenant so long revealed
To faithful men in former time,
Christ by his own example sealed;
The Lord of love, in love sublime.
Your love, O Lord, our sinful race
Has not returned, but falsified;
Author of mercy, turn your face
And grant repentance for our pride.
Remember, Lord, though frail we be,
By your own kind hand were we made;
And help us, lest our frailty
Cause your great name to be betrayed.
Hear us, O Trinity sublime,
And undivided Unity;
So let this consecrated time,
Bring forth its fruit abundantly. Amen.
unshaken from it flows
where stands Christ’s Cross.
We sing the praise of him who died,
Of him who died upon the Cross;
The sinner’s hope let men deride,
For this we count the world but loss.
Inscribed upon the Cross we see
In shining letters, ‘God is Love’;
He bears our sins upon the Tree;
He brings us mercy from above.
The Cross! it takes our guilt away;
It holds the fainting spirit up;
It cheers with hope the gloomy day,
And sweetens ev’ry bitter cup.
It makes the coward spirit brave,
And nerves the feeble arm for fight;
It takes its terror from the grave,
And gilds the bed of death with light;
The balm of life, the cure of woe,
The measure and the pledge of love,
The sinner’s refuge here below,
The angels’ theme in heaven above.
To you, O Christ, our loving King,
All glory, praise and thanks we bring;
All glory as is ever meet,
To Father and to Paraclete. Amen.
V Those who seek the Lord shall praise him.
R May their hearts rejoice for ever.
O praise the Lord, for it is good to sing praises to our God; *
and to praise him is joyful and right.
The Lord is rebuilding Jerusalem; *
he is gathering together the scattered outcasts of Israel.
He heals the broken in spirit *
and binds up their wounds.
He counts the number of the stars *
and calls them all by name.
Great is our Lord, and great is his power; *
there is no measuring his understanding.
The Lord restores the humble, *
but he brings down the wicked to the dust.
O sing to the Lord a song of thanksgiving; *
sing praises to our God upon the harp.
He covers the heavens with cloud,
and prepares rain for the earth; *
and makes the grass to sprout upon the mountains.
He gives the cattle their food *
and feeds the young ravens that call to him.
He takes no pleasure in the strength of a horse; *
nor does he delight in any man’s legs,
But the Lord’s delight is in those that fear him; *
who wait in hope for his mercy.
Hear, O Lord, the voice of my pleading.
Deliver me, O Lord, from evil men; *
and preserve me from violent men.
Who devise mischief in their hearts; *
who stir up enmity day by day.
They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent’s; *
and the venom of asps is under their lips.
Keep me, O Lord, from the power of the wicked; *
preserve me from violent men,
who think to thrust me from my course.
The arrogant have laid a snare for me,
and rogues have stretched the net; *
they have set traps along my way.
But I have said to the Lord ‘You are my God’; *
hear, O Lord, the voice of my pleading.
O Lord my God and my sure stronghold, *
you have covered my head in the day of battle.
Do not fulfil, O Lord, the desire of the wicked, *
nor further the evil that he has devised.
Let not those that beset me lift their heads; *
but let the mischief that is on their lips bury them.
Let hot burning coals be poured upon them; *
let them be plunged into that miry pit
from which they shall never arise.
Let no man of evil tongue find footing in the land; *
the evil, the violent man—let him be hunted to the end.
I know that the Lord will work justice for the oppressed *
and right judgements for the poor.
I called upon the Lord in my trouble, and he delivered me from all my
-vvvvvv2vvvvvvvvv}vvÓv^vvvÓvvvv5vvvv7v7vvvvv6vvvvv]vvvvÓv^vvvÓvvvv5vvvvv4vvvvv5vvvvvvvvv}
fears.
38

Let no man of evil tongue find footing in the land; *
the evil, the violent man—let him be hunted to the end.
I know that the Lord will work justice for the oppressed *
and right judgements for the poor.
Surely the righteous shall have cause to praise your name, *
and the just shall dwell in your sight.
First Sunday of Lent
Officiant O Lord,
whose Son Jesus Christ fasted forty days in the wilderness,
and was tempted as we are, yet without sin:
give us grace to use such abstinence,
that our flesh being subdued to the Spirit;
we may ever obey the godly movements
of your most holy will, to your honour and glory;
Second Sunday of Lent
Officiant Almighty God,
who show to those who are in error the light of your truth,
that they may return to the way of righteousness:
grant to all those who are admitted
into the fellowship of Christ’s religion;
that they may reject those things
that are contrary to their profession,
and follow all such things as are agreeable to the same;
Third Sunday of Lent
Officiant Almighty God,
whose most dear Son went not up to joy
but first he suffered pain,
and entered not into glory
before he was crucified:
mercifully grant that we,
by denying ourselves at his command;
may find grace to take up our cross and follow him;
Fourth Sunday of Lent
Officiant Merciful Lord,
absolve your people from their offences:
that through your bountiful goodness;
we may be delivered from the chains of those sins
which by our frailty we have committed;
Fifth Sunday of Lent
Officiant Most merciful God,
who by the death and resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ
delivered and saved mankind:
grant that, by faith in him who suffered on the cross;
we may share in his victory over Satan, sin, and death;
Palm Sunday
Officiant Almighty and everliving God,
who in your tender love towards mankind
to take upon him our flesh
and to suffer death upon the cross
that all should follow the example of his great humility:
