The Crimea had left its mark on Florence. Contracting "Crimean Fever" her health was never the same. Despite that though, she continued to use her influence to change the health care in Britain. She studied the design of hospitals with many architects and doctors asking for her advice. Florence believed that hospitals needed separate wings connected by corridors. It was known as the "Pavillion Style." The first newly built hospital to adopt her suggestions was the military hospital at the Woolwich barracks in east London. Soon others would follow including the rebuilt St Thomas' Hospital. Money was raised by the public to train even more nurses. The Nightingale nurses would eventually lead the reformation of nursing under Florence's image. Nightingale would also write about nursing. Notes on Nursing would become a best seller. Many families owned their own copy studying the advice of the "Lady with the Lamp" in order to help and nurse their own families. She would become a prolific writer writing some 200 books, pamphlets and articles. It is with this that her legacy lives on. From hospital layouts to the nursing practices that we receive today. All of which were the product of Florence Nightingale. "If a patient is cold, if a patient is feverish, if a patient is faint, if he is sick after taking food, if he has a bed-sore, it is generally the fault not of the disease...but of the nursing."
