Dear Readers,
Welcome to our Back to School edition! We hope you had a fantastic
summer break and now feel ready to start a new school year.
We also want to give a warm welcome to all of our new readers
who have little ones just starting their first year of school! It’s such
an exciting time, full of new experiences for them and you. For
our regular readers, we hope this new school year brings lots of
opportunities for fun with your family.
Although we are between seasons, our What’s On Where pages
still offer a variety of family and child-friendly events and activities in
your local area and we always try to include as many free events as
possible. Do take a look at the competitions we’ve included this time,
and don’t miss the one on page seven, for a year’s 11+ tuition worth
£2,000.
Most theatres don’t have many family productions at this time of
the year but those which have, look great: there are still some open
air events too. Remember to check the venues’ websites before you
plan to visit, in case there have been any changes to times or dates.
We’ll be back again in October, in good time before the half term
holiday and no doubt there will be lots of theatre tickets to be won!

a brand-new Day Nursery &

visits to Odds Farm Park’s animal
barns and paddocks, alongside
the outdoor and indoor play
facilities, providing amix of adult
and child led activities in the new
Nursery building and private
gardens.

New Family Support Service
coming to Buckinghamshire
A new Family Support Service,
designed to improve the lives
of children and families, will be
launched across Buckinghamshire in
September.
The new service has been carefully
designed to provide better, more
targeted support for vulnerable
families, who face arange of issues
or more complex challenges. Families
supported by the new service
will have alead professional who,
depending on the level of need, can
coordinate ateam around the family
to support them to address the issues
they are facing –with the ultimate
aim of helping them to overcome
their problems leading to happier and
healthier lives.
The Family Support Service will
also offer open-access sessions
The High Wycombe Schools
Speech Competition is back again
this year!
First Class Learning High
Wycombe, in conjunction with
Primary Times, are inviting years
5&6 pupils who attend primary
schools in the High Wycombe area,
to enter a ‘speech’ competition,
last year we saw very enthusiastic
participations from the schools.
The competition will be in two
stages: firstly, entrants must submit
the speech in a ‘MS Word’ format
or scanned written document; then
students whose speeches are

children and parents from anetwork
of 16 Family Centres across the
county, which will also offer a range of
support for parents with children up to
age 19 (25 with SEND).
The Council is committed to
using the 19 former children’s centres
for alternative uses from the autumn,
primarily for early years benefit and
community use.

Family Support Service will be posted
on the Buckinghamshire Family
Information Service (BFIS) website so
keep an eye out for it.

established in July 2015 to
protect and share British
Paralympic Heritage. The Trust
has four founding members

British Wheelchair Sport.
The Paralympic Movement
is a story with unique British
involvement. It not only shows
how disability sport developed
but captures the prowess,
courage and endeavour
of hundreds of individuals
beginning with Professor Sir
Ludwig Guttmann, a German
Jewish refugee working in
Stoke Mandeville from 1943.
Guttmann’s holistic approach
to treating spinal injury patients
kept them alive, fit, active and
ultimately, inhiswords‘tax
payers’. It shows how one man
can literally ‘change the world’,
as his medical practice became
internationally renowned.
The National Paralympic
Heritage Trust opened the first
ever Paralympic Heritage Centre
at Stoke Mandeville Stadium on
the 29th March 2019 and have
welcomed over 15,000 visitors
since its opening.

Heritage Centre experience

Supporting your child with the 11+
As the new
academic
year starts,
many parents
of children
in Years 4
and 5will be
thinking about
how they
can support
their child at
home with 11+
preparation.
Marie
Redmond,
founder of

shares some useful advice.
To succeed in the 11+ it is
essential that children have
a thorough understanding of
maths, English, verbal, spatial
and non-verbal reasoning
so those topics should be
practised regularly at home,
for short bursts of time.
There are many activities
that can make these tasks less
onerous for children. Revision
of the ‘basic maths facts’
of multiplication, division,
addition and subtraction
can be made fun by playing
relevant games daily, such
as Bingo and board games.
Activities such as Sudoku,
chess and origami are very
useful for developing skills
that will be needed to answer
spatial and non-verbal
reasoning questions.
As vocabulary and reading
comprehension are such
important parts of the 11+
exam (they account for up to
50% of the marks), you should
urge your child to read as
wide arange of fiction and
non-fiction books as possible.
Although older children
usually read to themselves,
reading aloud to apartner
is awonderful way to slow
down while reading. Slower
reading usually means more
understanding, because
children have more time to
process the information. The
pair can also discuss any
new vocabulary, summarise
what they have read, ask
any questions and predict
what’s going to happen
next. For extra vocabulary
development, children can
play Scrabble or memory
games with vocabulary
flashcards.
In addition to these
unstructured activities, time
needs to be spent on more
organised exam preparation.
Children should use relevant
books so that they can
become confident with the
content of
11+ style
questions.

A few months before
the exam, children should
also learn exam techniques
and practise completing
mock exams under timed
conditions. This can be
completed at home however
attendance at our mock
exam sessions means that
children experience full
exam conditions. Within 48
hours, they receive their
results and can see all of the
questions that they answered
incorrectly, along with my
detailed explanations of how
to get them right next time.
Your child’s wellbeing is
paramount, so encourage
them to take regular breaks,
for relaxation and to let new
information sink in. It’s best
if the breaks don’t involve
technology, therefore a ball
game outside will be better
than playing agame on a
tablet.
Sleep is very important at
this time, as it has asignificant
role in consolidating new
memories. School-age
children need between nine
and twelve hours of sleep per
night and gadgets such as
TVs, tablets and computers
should be turned off at least
two hours before bedtime,
as the light they emit can
interfere with the production
of the hormone melatonin,
which affects sleep-wake
cycles.
It is understandable that
parents often become anxious
about the 11+ process and
I provide support for them
as well as my students.
Ultimately, Iensure that my
students are as prepared as
they possibly can be for their
exam, while reassuring them
that their parents will be proud
of them no matter what the
outcome.

Our glorious
summer is
over and so are
the holidays. Did your
child look forward to
going back to school?
Beginning the new academic year
in anew school or even anew
class can be daunting for parents
as well as the children but there
are afew strategies which you
can share together to enhance
your child’s learning experience
and provide an opportunity for
quality time with your child on
aone to one basis. Himanshu
Vora, an experienced therapist,
educationalist and life coach,
shares some ideas with us of
how to make the most of study
time at home.
Establishing apattern for good
learning habits is essential for
children of any age, and the more
enjoyable the experience the
more enthused your child will be
about learning. Some children
are reluctant learners and so
it’s important to understand the
reason for their reluctance. One
of the most critical points is
for children to understand and
experience that, it’s OKtomake
mistakes and that it’s important
to learn from them. How does
one do that? By focussing on
their successes, no matter how
small. Focus on the sums that
been worked out correctly and
gradually draw attention to the
sums that aren’t. It is important
not to point out that they are
wrong but, merely to suggest
that asecond look might give a
different answer. Ask questions
that will lead towards the
answer, without actually giving
the answers. Humour and
playfulness at this juncture are
appropriate and sets the mood
for rethinking without putting on
any pressure.
Set atime aside for homework,
planning aschedule for studies
not only forms agood habit
but also prepares the brain at a
subconscious level, to prepare
for learning. It’s agood idea to
print atimetable and stick it in a
prominent place, so everyone in
the household knows that there
are certain times of the day when
schoolwork is being done. If
yours is amulti-child household
then, if possible, ensure that
the study timetable for all the
children is synchronised. It is
very demotivating for achild to
be studying when siblings are
playing or watching their favourite
TV programme.
Avoid ‘lastminute.com’. It
causes alot of stress for you and
your child. Last minute homework
encourages children to hurry up
and ‘skim through’ their work,
inevitably making mistakes. As
aresult of this, they are likely
to think that they can never get
things right. It also creates a
lifelong tendency to do things at
the last minute, creating undue
stress in later life. Creating the
right environment is key and it
is awell-known fact that playing
Mozart quietly in the background
during study time, helps children
to focus more easily on the task
in hand.
Setting realistic and achievable
targets can be helpful by
encouraging children to compete
-with themselves. Set targets
that are just acouple of points
above what they currently
achieve. Children love challenges
and achieving them. So, for
example, if your child gets
6/10 sums right in 10 minutes,
encourage them to get 8and
then 10 sums right inthe same
time. Once the child achieves
100% accuracy, gofor speed,
getting 100% in less time. Please
remember no two children are
the same, not even twins! All
children achieve at adifferent
pace so it’s important for
parents to remember that when
setting targets, keep in mind
that it is about creating ajoyful
experience. It’s not important if
children need multiple attempts
to move onto the next level.
Much has been said about
Rote learning in the past two
decades. There isaplace for
it in alearning strategy. Let’s
understand that ‘rote learning ‘
and ‘parrot fashion learning ‘are
not the same. In the former, the
child understands why it is doing
acertain thing and keeps on
practicing till the topic becomes
instinctive and can answer
without much deliberation.
The latter is done without
understanding. So, if you were
asked 4x6=……? It would
take you less that 10 seconds
to answer. That’s because of
rote learning. Researchers found
that through extended exercises
in rote learning, it’s possible to
recall more information overall.
Rote learning benefits the
hippocampal foundation, akey
structure inthe brain for episodic
and spatial memory in humans.
In other words, there isevidence
that it increases brain power.
Encourage your child to have
some physical activity rather than
asedentary videogame before
studying and this will improve
their concentration: it is aknown
fact that video games can tire
children’s eyes and brain.
Abalanced diet is essential
for all children we all know, but
it’s not unusual to see children
having adiet with excessive
amounts of fizzy drinks, sugar
and salt. Believe it or not, an
unhealthy diet will affect your
child’s studies along with their
general health and makes them
fidgety, less focussed and
hyperactive. So, making sure
their intake of sugary and salty
food/snacks are well regulated
is vital.
Don’t beafraid to seek help
if you feel that your child is not
doing well, raise your concerns
with your child’s teacher, with
specific examples. The school
are always willing to listen
and put some measures in
place to address any issues.
Some children will benefit from
extra help in spite of excellent
teaching at school and this can
be done by enrolling your child
in atuition centre orengaging
aprivate tutor –ask around
and do some research on the
internet.

rewarding experience, so above

The Hellfire School ofWitchcraft
&Wizardry
From the 28th Oct –1Nov join the
famous School of Witchcraft and
enjoy an hour of spooky fun with
the friendly Wandmaster who will
ensure that you learn to cast spells,
banish werewolves and how to fly
a broomstick! The Wandmaster will
also direct you in potion making
and ghost busting. Trainees will
then descend into the caves. In the
Main Hall, you will practise flying
broomsticks, spell casting and
potion making. Having learned the
spells required the trainees may be
visited by awerewolf or ghost who
will, of course, be frightened away
by the loud spells! Lessons must
be brought before the day.
During Halloween week there’ll
be lots of daily free Halloween
fun in the courtyard at the Hellfire
Caves …Spooky games, colouring
competitions, fancy dress
competitions and more, all
hosted by our friendly spooks.
Face Painting is also available for
a small charge. There is no charge
for the fun and games or access to
the courtyard and delightful cafe,
