and non-biodegradable waste; Warns of cancellation of licence if customers are overcharged for food or drinks
With the three-year beach shack
policy coming into force, the State
government has finalised granting 364
toilets as well as separate
dustbins for biodegradable and nonbiodegradable
in possession of Herald, also mentions
that the number of beach shacks on
any particular beach stretch might
vary on physical conditions and the
directions of the Goa Coastal Zone
Management Authority.
Even as the policy comprises of three
years, the government stated that the
temporary structures would be erected
only from September 1 till May 31 of
the particular season. “The shacks on
the government property permitted
shall be removed on May 31 of the
respective years and the land restored
to its original condition latest by June
10,” it states.
With the season set to commence next
month, the policy has mandated the
shack operators to maintain separate
dustbins for biodegradable and nonbiodegradable
waste with lids while
also directing that segregated waste
be handed over to the beach cleaning
contractor. In addition to this, CCTV
cameras and portable/bio-chemical
toilets has been made compulsory.
In a new directive issued from this
season, the government has warned of
cancellation of licence if the customers
are overcharged for food or drinks in
the shacks. “The beach shack allottee
shall provide printed bills to its
customers for food, refreshment and
drinks. The price of each item sold
shall be displayed for information of
general public. The customer shall
not be charged more than the printed
cost of items. Copy of such chart rate
shall be provided to the (Tourism)
Department for information and if any
complaint of overcharging is received
from any customer, the licence shall be
liable to be cancelled,” it states.
On the setting up of beach beds, the
cabinet has discussed that additional
beach beds, tables and chairs can
be put up depending on the beach
carrying capacity.
Apple is continuously working on
improving the health-related features
that it offers with its devices. A new
report revealed that researchers have
discovered a way to measure the blood
pressure without the need for any
external hardware.
Currently, the Apple iPhone or any
other smartphone can measure the blood
pressure of the user. But the user needs
to use an external device to actually
measure the recordings and then send it
to the device. The new report revealed
that the new technology uses a short selfie
video to measure the blood pressure.
What is more interesting is that the
report states that this is accurate about
95% of the time. This could be a lifechanger
as high blood pressure does
not showcase any symptoms.
Researchers at the University of
Toronto in Canada and Hospital of
Hangzhou Normal University in
China posted a proof-of-concept video
showcasing a user measuring his blood
pressure using a short selfie video.
The phone takes about 900 images
in 30 seconds to read the blood
pressure. The research team took the
measurements and then used them to
train a machine-learning algorithm
which gave them over 95% accuracy.
The sequence of soft landing of Vikram lander on the lunar surface (Image: ISRO)
New Delhi: After successfully performing
the fifth and final orbit manoeuvre to
refine its circular path around the moon
on Sunday, Chandrayaan 2 lander,
'Vikram', successfully separated from
the orbiter on Monday.
The Indian Space Research
Organisation (ISRO) confirmed the
development in a tweet.
“The Vikram Lander successfully
separated from Chandrayaan-2 Orbiter
at 1315 hours IST today. The Vikram
Lander is currently located in an orbit
of 119 km x 127 km. The Chandrayaan-2
Orbiter continues to orbit the Moon
in its existing orbit,” ISRO said in a
statement.
The next maneuver is scheduled for
Tuesday between 8:45pm and 9:45pm.
The separation of lander 'Vikram'
from Chandrayaan-2 orbiter was
scheduled between 12:45 pm and 01:45
pm (IST). Following this, there would
be two deorbit manoeuvres of lander
Hyundai makes micro-mobility
easier with folding electric scooter
Mounting to your vehicle for charging.
After unveiling its redesigned 2020
Sonata, Hyundai has returned with its
newest solution for mico-mobility: a
foldable electric scooter prototype.
Weighing at about 17 pounds,
the scooter sees a compact tri-fold
design that can be transformed into a
briefcase-like size, making it highly
portable. Some of its features include
a digital display showing battery life
and a screen that lets you know how
fast you’re going. Thanks to its 10.5 Ah
battery, the electric vehicle can travel up
to 12 mph and also includes articulated
LED lights at the front and rear for
nighttime riding. As a final note, the
scooter mounts to any Hyundai or Kia
vehicle, where it gets charged from the
electricity generated from driving.
Though no further details have been
disclosed about when the new electric
scooter will come out or what it will be
officially called, stay tuned for more
information on its development.
'Vikram' to prepare for its landing in
the south polar region of the moon.
Chandrayaan-2 satellite began its
journey towards the moon, leaving the
earth's orbit in the dark hours, on August
14, after a crucial manoeuvre called
Trans Lunar Insertion (TLI) carried
out by ISRO to place the spacecraft on
"Lunar Transfer Trajectory".
India's Geosynchronous Satellite
Launch Vehicle, GSLV MkIII-M1, had
successfully launched the 3,840-kg
Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft into the
earth's orbit on July 22.
Following the landing, the rover
'Pragyan' will roll out from lander
'Vikram' between 5:30-6:30 am on
September 7 an carry out experiments on
the lunar surface for a period of one lunar
day, which is equal to 14 earth days.
India's second lunar expedition
would shed light on a completely
unexplored section of the Moon, its
South Polar region.
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration
Services (USCIS) officers can now use
fake social media accounts to monitor
immigrants seeking visas, green cards
and citizenship.
The new plan is a policy change from
July that reverses a Homeland Security
Department ban that cited privacy issues.
A statement from USCIS said the agency
will use the fake accounts only “to access
social media content that is publicly
available to all users of the social
media platform,” adding its personnel
will respect users' privacy settings and
won’t "friend" or "follow" users.
USCIS said it doesn’t proactively
monitor social media accounts.
“We use social media information
to investigate an existing request
for immigration benefits, as part of
our background and security check
process,” the statement said. However,
the new USCIS policy may violate
Facebook's and Twitter’s terms of
use, which both prohibit users from
creating fake accounts.
Dave Maass, a senior investigative
researcher for the civil liberties advocacy
group Electronic Frontier Foundation,
said the new policy "undermines our
trust in social media companies and our
ability to communicate and organize
and stay in touch with people."
Hackers cracked Jack Dorsey's Twitter
account using a very simple technique
Twitter founder and CEO Jack Dorsey's
official Twitter account was hacked
on August 30, shocking his followers
as his account spewed racial slurs,
anti-Semitic tweets, and more offensive
content, before all the tweets and
retweets were eventually removed.
According to an initial Twitter
statement, a "security oversight"
by the provider let the hackers gain
control. Twitter's communications
team later clarified that "the phone
number associated with the account
was compromised due to a security
oversight by the mobile provider."
The hack appears to be from the
same group that attacked a number
of account belonging to YouTube
celebrities last week on Twitter,
including beauty vlogger James
Charles, Shane Dawson, and King Bach.
Daniel "Keemstar" Keem, who has
communicated with the hackers on
several occasions, suggested in a tweet
that the phone service provider was to
blame, and alleged that the company
inadvertently allowed hackers to call
in and request a SIM card change on
behalf of the high-profile accounts.
The tactic lines up with Twitter's
explanation for the Dorsey hack,
which the company said was caused by
hackers using a phone number to send
the tweets through text messages.
Such a tactic is often known as "SIM
hacking." It occurs when a hacker
tricks a mobile carrier into transferring
the victim's cellphone number onto a
new phone - one that's owned by the
hackers. The hackers can then use
Twitter's "text-to-tweet" service to
publish tweets on the victim's account.
Wired reported that smartphone
userscan protect themselves from SIM
swapping by adding a passcode to their
carrier account or using a third-party
app - such as Google Authenticator and
Authy- for two-factor authentication.

The stall where PM
Modi used to sell
tea to be developed
as a tourist spot
With Spice Tours & Waterfalls,
here’s that unique Goa
vacation you were looking for
There is so much more to Goa than just its beaches. Explore the other side
of this tropical paradise! #TravelGreen #Wanderlust #Lifestyle
Unless you were not living under a
rock, you must be aware of Indian PM
Narendra Modi’s childhood tales. The
stories of how, as a kid, he would sell
tea on the railway platform in Gujarat
to fulfil basic day-to-day requirements
of his big family. From being called a
chaiwala to becoming one of the most
powerful men in the world and India,
Modi’s journey has been both difficult
and an inspiration.
As per the news, the tea stall where
Modi used to sell tea in his childhood
in Gujarat's Vadnagar (his hometown)
will be developed as a tourist spot.
The decision was taken by the State
Tourism Minister Prahlad Singh
Patel, who visited Vadnagar in search
of places that can be converted into
tourism hotspots in the state.
The tea stall stands on a railway
platform in Vadnagar, and is currently
in a bad state. However, the minister
wants to keep it the way it is and only
plans to protect the stall by covering it
with glass from outside. So basically,
there are no plans to refurbish the tea
stall, as they want to keep it original
and to preserve its authenticity.
Prime Minister’s childhood days,
especially those when he was nothing
but a tea seller, has been a topic of hot
discussion in the country. He once
said that he could understand the
plight of the common people because
of his childhood days that he spent in
the scarcity of money and being poor.
Considering the conditions today, when
he has risen to such powerful status in
his political career, the topic adds to
emotional value.
It is a 25% decrease in the earlier
Non-AC Class tickets and R40 per ticket
for AC First-Class.
The company has further decided to
non-AC class tickets and R20 per ticket
energise you with refreshed zeal.
“I grew up in rural Germany, and
village life has always been close to
my heart. For the past few years, dad
and I are working on these plantations,
trying to show guests the other side of
Goa,” Ashok tells The Better India.
So when you book a room at the
and pigeons) will wake you up gently.
you may not feel so, thanks to the cool
winds that envelope the estate.
“We have maintained a vibrant
You are free to engage in activities or
just relax and enjoy the vibe of the place.
Karnataka suspends
luxury train Golden
Chariot as losses
touch R41 crore
The State government has temporarily
suspended operation of South India’s only
luxury train, the Golden Chariot, in the
wake of losses to the tune of R41 crore.
Tourism and Kannada and Culture
Minister C.T. Ravi on Thursday held
a review meeting with officials of
both departments and said the Golden
Chariot would not run for now since it
had incurred financial loss. In the past,
the Golden Chariot was operated from
October to March.
However, Jungle Lodges and
Resorts and Karnataka State Tourism
Development Corporation (KSTDC)
continue to make profits, he said.
The agricultural activities are
seasonal. The agricultural activities
are seasonal. Early in the year, pepper
is harvested. If you visit between
March and May, you can get your
hands dirty harvesting and processing
cashews. Weeding and planting are
ongoing activities, and until October,
you can help to nourish the coconut
trees with organic fertilisers.
Apart from this, you can go for guided
walks around the spice plantations.
You can also take a guided hike to the
Dudhsagar waterfalls, a hike to a temple
inside the jungle or go on a nature trail.
The resort also has a natural pool that
you can enjoy a swim in.
Depending upon the state of the rains,
you can also go for a swim in the river.
You are free to take up the activities
as per your wish. Mealtimes are predecided,
but those are the only time
restrictions imposed on you.
“As long as you are happy in nature
and alright with a possible lizard in the
room or frog in the bathroom, you will
be comfortable here,” he says.
You will have an attached bathroom in
the room, fan and a supply of electricity.
You will also meet other travellers. In
most cases, Ashok says, strangers get
talking and end up being friends at the
end of the four-day trip.
16 retail fashion
brands commit
to sustainability
16 retail fashion brands have signed the
Su.Re (sustainability resolution) project
launched by the Textile Ministry, IMG
Reliance and Clothing Manufacturers
Association Of India (CMAI).
Textile Minister Smriti Irani
launched the project, in association
with the UN, on 22 nd August, at the
Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive
2019 being held here.
Retail brands like Spykar, Westside,
Trends, Shoppers Stop, fbb, House of
Anita Dogre and Lifestyle and Max
joined the movement that aims to
develop sustainable sourcing policy for
consistent prioritising and utilising
certified raw materials that have a
positive impact on the environment.
In her address at the event which was
also attended by Renata Lok-Dessallien,
UN Resident Coordinator in India,
Irani said: “Never before in a
population our size has voluntarily
driven the retail force of India and
fashion elite along with the government
to come together at one platform. That
this has happened voluntarily makes
me proud. On October 2, we shall
step into the 150th year of Mahatma
Gandhi’s birthday. Gandhi said to
the world, ‘be the change you want
to be’. And today, the resolution on
sustainability is a reflective of that very
thought of the Mahatma.”
She said that sustainability is the
fourth criteria for 57 percent of the
consumers of the apparel and design
industry. “This (project) makes it not
only responsible business but also
smart business. This project will impact
worth Rs 30,000 crore in the market.
Everything that we consume, we must
consume responsibly.”
Tesla goes vegan with new 100%
Leather-Free model 3 interior
At this year’s Tesla annual shareholder
meeting, Elon Musk announced his
commitment to make all Tesla models
vegan. Now it looks like Musk is making
good on his promise; Tesla just debuted
a new leather-free Model 3 interior
which doesn’t compromise on design.
This is the car innovator’s response
to pressures from PETA activists.
According to TechCrunch, Musk
admitted that he had wanted to
implement the changes earlier, however
“some challenges when heating the
non-leather material and also how well
it wears over time” necessitated more
prolonged trials and testing.
Tesla is committed to making the
Model Y leather-free by 2020 and is
already offering synthetic leather seats
as an option in its Model 3, Model X
and Model S vehicles.
Among alternate materials that are
replacing animal products like leather
and vinyl in car interiors are Alcantara
as a sought after synthetic textile
material.
Properties of Alcantara include
high durability, a soft and suedelike
microfiber pile. Alcantara’s
applications are expanding in the
design, fashion, consumer electronics,
and marine industries as well.
Elton John's music is honoured with
special Royal Mail stamp collection
Sir Elton John fans may start to see a lot more of their favourite
artist after it was revealed Royal Mail are launching a collection
of stamps with Elton's face on them.
While Queen Elizabeth II may be who
the public are used to seeing, Elton will
become only the second solo artist to be
bestowed with the honour.
David Bowie was the first solo artist
to receive a collection of stamps in 2017.
The new stamps will celebrate Elton's
music, with eight of the new stamps
featuring images of his most popular
album covers.
Elton said: "To say I was surprised
when Royal Mail got in touch is an
understatement.
"Never did I think I’d appear on a
stamp! It’s wonderful, a great honour."
Royal Mail's Philip Parker said:
"Elton is one of the most successful
British solo artists of all time.
"He has recorded some of the bestknown
songs in pop history such as
'Candle In The Wind' and 'Rocket Man'.
"Our stamps issued today showcase
some of his most iconic albums,
and celebrate his fantastic musical
contribution."
The stamps feature albums including
Honky Chateau, Goodbye Yellow Brick
Road and Caribou.
Four other stamps are available
in a miniature sheet to celebrate
Elton’s live performances, such as his
Hammersmith Odeon appearance in
London in 1973.
The miniature stamps also show Elton
at his show at the Dodger Stadium
in Los Angeles in 1975, the Diamond
Jubilee Concert at Buckingham Palace
in London in 2012, and his Farewell
Yellow Brick Road tour at Madison
Square Garden in New York in 2018.
The stamps and a range of collectable
products are available now.
Amit Trivedi
One of the best composers of our time
Amit Trivedi, the legend behind most Bollywood chartbuster songs, is a
force to reckon with in the music industry.
If you are thinking of a vivacious singer
in Bollywood who is bold and sings like
a dream come true them it is definitely
Amit Trivedi that you’re looking for.
Trivedi is one of the most famous
composers in Indian music industry
today and his soulful numbers have
been chartbusters for years on end.
His career started with the push of
his dear friend and writer-director
Anurag Kashyap. Within only five
years of his introduction in this
industry, Amit Trivedi had already
redefined the music industry and
brought in a lot do freshness and bold
nuances with him, which we now see
booming very well at present.
Spanning from the soulful hit Iktara
to the iconic number Pardesi and from
the melodious Meethi Boliyan to the
peppy number London Thumakda,
Amit Trivedi has clearly touched our
hearts in more ways than one. The most
extraordinary thing about him is his
excellency in every genre and his stride
to be perfect in everything he attempts.
His USP lies in the mere fact that
audiences can never know what to expect
or predict about his upcoming songs
either, and that excitement stays intact.
Be it a fusion of Bhangra, Jazz,
Rajasthani folk, electronica or the
flavours of African folk music, all of
Trivedi’s tracks have a fresh element in
it. For instance Aafaton Ke Parindey is
based on a Dubstep influenced rhythmic
beat, at 155 beats per minute. These kind
of new expeditions clearly take our breath
away and leave us definitely wanting to
hear more of where that came from.
Apart from his fusion skills, his
contemporary skills also never fail to
amaze and surprise us! We simply hope
that this icon shines brighter in the
music industry and keeps doling out
chartbusters one after the other.
THE PLACE
Sushi Pizzeria Coffeteria
Did you know? according to etiquette you shouldn’t send a piece of pickled ginger in the mouth along with
sushi or rolls. Ginger has strong taste and aroma and will not allow you to fully enjoy the treat. It is meant
to “clean” the taste between two pieces of sushi. Sushi is considered to be an aphrodisiac, because the
two most common types of fish that are used, salmon and mackerel, are known for their high content of
omega-3 fatty acids, which help to produce the stimulating hormones.
Do you want to know more interesting facts? Ok. 5 curious facts about head chef and owner Dmitry: 1st
- 14 years in Goa, 2nd - raising beautiful daughter Maria, 3d- master of mouthwatering sushi, 4th -played
cello for 11 years, 5th -proud to build up wood-fired oven with his own hands. And one more important thing
about him - the famous brand Smirnoff was born in his family 120 years ago.
So The Place has indoor with AC and outdoor seating arias, fast wifi, catering, parking and even ping-pong
be regulated? Centre
mulls certification for
streaming platforms
Top officials of the Ministry of
Information and Broadcasting are
planning to meet representatives from
OTT (Over the Top) platforms — referring
to content made and streamed by online
platforms, rather than through satellite
or cable — as well as legal experts and
others for certifying online content.
According to the Economic Times,
the I&B ministry will hold talks with
all major OTT players such as Hotstar,
Voot, ZEE5, Arre, SonyLIV, ALTBalaji,
Reliance Jio, Netflix and Eros Now,
as well as legal experts and other
stakeholders. This comes just days after
Union I&B Minister Prakash Javadekar
invited suggestions for certification
of online content from members of the
film industry during a meeting he held
on August 31.
Prakash Javadekar invited
Bear Grylls looks
unrecognisable after
suffering a deadly
allergic reaction to
Bee sting
Bear Grylls was recently in news for
his wild journey with Prime Minister
Narendra Modi, where people got to
see the unknown side of PM Modi as
he ventured into the Indian wilderness
to create awareness about animal
conservation & environmental change.
Now, Bear Grylls is in news once
again for his new show 'Treasure Island'
and how he got knocked out by a bee
sting, while filming it.
45-year-old Grylls is known to be
the ultimate survival expert. There's
literally nothing this man can't tackle
in the wilderness...except for bees
because he is allergic to bee stings.
And that's exactly what landed him
in a life-threatening situation with an
unrecognisable swollen face.
Despite getting stung by a bee, Grylls
continued to keep the cameras rolling.
Realising the gravity of the situation,
his crew and the doctors available at the
shoot rushed to him and treated him.
Sridevi's wax
statue unveiled at
Madame Tussauds
in Singapore
The late actor's husband Boney
Kapoor and her daughters Janhvi
and Khushi were present at the
unveiling.
Sridevi's iconic 'Hawa Hawai' avatar
came alive at Madame Tussauds
museum in Singapore on Wednesday
with the launch of her wax statue.
Complete with her golden gown and a
golden crown, the wax statue captured
her iconic look in the song ‘Hawa
Hawai’ from the movie Mr India.
The late actor’s husband Boney
Kapoor and her daughters Janhvi and
Khushi were present at the unveiling.
Boney Kapoor teared up ahead of
the unveiling and broke down while
speaking about Sridevi and the process
before her statue was unveiled.
Sridevi’s wax figure is the only one of
its kind in the world and an exclusive
addition to Madame Tussauds
Singapore, a release by the museum
had said. Created posthumously, a
team of 20 skilled artists worked closely
with Sridevi’s family over the course
of five months to replicate her pose,
expressions, make-up and iconic outfit.
Superstar Sridevi, who reigned
the Bollywood box-office of the
eighties, died on February 24, 2018, by
accidentally drowning in a bathtub at a
Dubai hotel.
Ram Kapoor claims
90% of aspiring actors
don’t have any work
& they spend their life
giving auditions
Ram Kapoor who is best known for his
role as Mr Walia in Kasamh Se and as
Ram in Bade Achhe Lagte Hain was the
talk of the town recently when before
and after pictures of himself after losing
oodles of weight did rounds on the
internet. The actor is one of the popular
and versatile actors who dabbled
in various mediums in his 20-year
career. And during an interview with
Hindustan Times, he claimed that he is
happy and content with how his journey
has been till now. He said, "There aren’t
too many challenges. Life is fun, and
fortunately, work has been coming to
me regularly from the last 20 years.
Now, I can be picky and choosy about
what I want to do. If I want to take a
year off, I can do that without any fear."
He also opened up on how aspiring
actors hardly get any projects and how
they mostly spend their life giving
auditions. He said, "It’s extremely tough
(in today's time), especially for aspiring
actors to get work. Apparently, about
90 percent of them don’t have any work.
They spend their whole life giving
auditions. I think a mere two percent
manage to make a successful career."
He also shared his struggles during
the initial days. He revealed that
during the initial five to eight years of
his career he was just one more name
in thousands. He said how there were
times when he didn't have any work for
six months and had enough money. But
he made sure to make it big.

Best cycling routes in
Goa for a slow, immersive
travel experience
Give your car and motorbike a miss to experience Goa on a bicycle.
To see Goa through a new lens and
new perspective, try renting a bike and
cycle around as much as you can. This
is the perfect season for it; with the
monsoons quietly ebbing, giving way
to the most pleasant time of the year.
While it is a slow and immersive way of
travel; it also gives you ample scope for
unique experiences that you may miss
out on otherwise. Here are some of the
best cycling routes to take in Goa.
Heritage Forts
If you choose to cycle through the
small fishing village of Nerul, you will
pass quaint Portuguese-style mansions
and will be able to spot the iconic
Fort Aguada overlooking the long
beach belt of Candolim, Calangute and
Baga. From there, head to the historic
450-year-old Reis Magos Fort, about
three kilometres away.
Coastline Beaches
For the long-distance cyclists,
following the route from Querim on
Goa’s northern border to Polem on the
southern border, is the best way to enjoy
Goa’s beach culture. You can stop for
overnight stays at the beach resorts and
home-stays along the way and sample
local delicacies that catch your fancy.
Divar and Chorao Islands
About twelve kilometres from Panjim,
the picturesque island of Divar can be
reached after a free ferry ride. It’s one
of the most rural settings in Goa for
a blissful cycling experience. Chorao
Island, near Divar, is also accessible
by ferry, and is home to the famous Dr.
Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary. These islands
are known to be mostly isolated, and
are great for photography as well.
Spice Plantations
Pedal through Goa’s quiet
countryside to arrive at organic
spice plantations, some of which
offer hot meals and rustic overnight
accommodation. You can choose from
Tanshikar Spice Farm in Netravali,
Sahakari Spice Farm in Ponda or
Tropical Spice Plantation in Ponda.
Wildlife Sanctuaries
For the wildlife lover, cycling to one of
several wildlife parks in Goa is an ideal
thing to do. The best ones to consider
are Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary
(home to the gorgeous Dudhsagar
Falls), Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary,
Netravali Wildlife Sanctuary and
Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary.
Tatkal Tickets of
last-minute travellers
earned Railways
R25,000 Crore in last
4 years: RTI
New Delhi: Last-minute travellers
have helped railways earn a whopping
R25,392 crore in the last 4 years, an RTI
has found.
will witness thousands visiting the
Pandal to take blessings from the God.
The twenty-foot high idol was first
installed in 1934. Once the festivities
are over, devotes will take the
Lalbaughcha idol for for visarjan and
immerse it into the Arabian Sea.
Meanwhile, Mumbai police said
over 14,000 security officers have
been deployed across the city ahead of
Ganpati festival. “From September 2-12
Ganpati festival is going to be celebrated
all across Maharashtra. We are going
to deploy more than 14,000 officers
across the city, the traffic department
has also issued certain guidelines, some
roads have also been closed for traffic,”
Pranay Ashok, Mumbai Police PRO
told news agency ANI.
The national transporter earned R21,530
crore from Tatkal quota tickets and
an additional R3,862 crore from Tatkal
Premium tickets between 2016 and 2019,
with a massive 62% increase in revenue
from the latter during this period.
Tatkal booking was introduced in
1997 in select trains with an objective
of providing accommodation for lastminute
travellers and was extended
across the country in 2004.
Tatkal ticket charges have been fixed
as a percentage of fare at the rate of
10% of basic fare for second class and
30% of basic fare for all other classes
subject to minimum and maximum.
Under the premium version, which
was introduced in 2014 in select trains,
50% of tatkal quota tickets are sold
using the dynamic fare system.
In 2016-2017, the revenue from such
tickets touched R6,672 crore, going up to
R6,915 crore the following year.
In 2017-2018 railways' earning
from Tatkal quota rose to R6,952
crore, according to a RTI filed by
Madhya Pradesh based RTI activist
Chandrashekar Gaur.
However, it is in the Tatkal Premium
quota tickets that railways saw a 62%
jump in its earnings from 2016-2017 to
2018-2019 to R1608 crore. In 2016-2017,
the amount was R1,263 crore and in
2017-2018, the amount was R991 crore.
The tatkal scheme currently covers
around 2,677 trains. According to
railway figures, around 1.71 lakh seats,
of the 11.57 lakh available, are up for
booking under the tatkal scheme.
Today's sortie marks the successful
return to flying of Abhinandan, who
was undergoing intense medical tests
following his release from Pakistan.
Abhinandan Varthaman was shot down
on February 27 while responding to an
offensive from the Pakistan Air Force.
The Pakistan Air Force attempted
entering Indian airspace and targeting
military infrastructure in response to
the February 26 Balakot airstrike that
saw the Indian Air Force enter Pakistan
After Mount
Everest, 9-yearold
Pune boy
climbs Africa's
highest mountain
NEW DELHI: Most nine-year-olds
would find it difficult to even put a
finger on Mount Kilimanjaro on a map,
but not Advait Bhartia, who recently
scaled the the highest free-standing
mountain in the world.
Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, at
19,341 feet above sea level, is also the
highest in Africa. Advait reached the
top of mountain on July 31, under the
supervision of his expedition leader
Samir Patham.
To successfully accomplish the hike, the
nine-year-old from Pune took the most
recommended Machame route that begins
at the southern base of the mountain.
Advait, who also successfully trekked
to the Everest base camp as a boy of 6
in 2016, finished the summit in 7 days.
"This trek was really difficult but
fun at the same time. When I was
summitting (sic) the Everest Base
Camp, we were living in wooden
and bomb a terrorist facility located in
the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province.
Abhinandan was flying a MiG-21 Bison
fighter during that dogfight and shot
down after he took down a Pakistani
F-16. Abhinandan ejected from his
fighter jet after being shot and landed
in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, where
he was taken prisoner. He was released
two days later, a development that
significantly cooled tensions between
India and Pakistan, which had come
close to the brink of armed conflict in the
aftermath of the February 14 Pulwama
terror attack (the Balakot airstrike was
seen as a response to the terror attack).
Abhinandan Varthaman was
conferred the Vir Chakra for his heroics
during the February 27 dogfight.
Indian Air Force chief BS Dhanoa who
flew today's sortie with Wing Commander
Abhinandan Varthaman is also a MiG-
21 pilot and had flown the fighter jet
during the 1999 Kargil conflict, while
commanding the IAF's 17 Squadron.
houses but during the Kilimanjaro
trek, we stayed in tents and it was a
good experience being exposed to snow
and the surroundings.
"I could have completed the trek
faster but the mountains were very
beautiful and I took a lot of breaks to
take in the beauty," Advait, who has
Europe's highest peak Mount Elbrus on
his bucket list for next year, said.
He added that thin air, reducing
atmospheric oxygen by approx 50%,
and sub-zero temp. ranging between
minus 21 and 25 o C at higher altitudes
were some of the challenges he braved
during his expedition.
According to his mother Payal
Bhartia, Advait underwent stringent
training over a period of two months to
gear up for the climb.
The trek was organized by Punebased
adventure and trekking company
Adventure Pulse.

Delhi doctors plaster toddler's
doll to treat her fracture
Doctors of Delhi's Lok Nayak Hospital
had to plaster Zikra Malik's doll to
make her convince for the treatment.
The pictures of 11-month-old lying with
her legs attached to a transaction rod
beside 'Pari', her doll are all over social
media. As per reports, Zikra fell down
from her bed on August 17, after which
her family rushed her to the hospital.
The doctors suggested putting her on
gallows traction, which is a method
used for treating fractured shaft thigh
bone in children under two years and
less than 15 kgs. However, the toddler
refused to cooperate. It is then her
mother thought of making her favourite
doll put in the same position as Zikra.
Farheen, Zikra's mother told Indian
Express, ''Even at home, she is always
moving from one place to another and it's
impossible to make her sit down for five
minutes. On the first day at the hospital,
she wasn't ready to lie down on the bed.
She kept moving and doctors asked
us to keep her legs straight for proper
alignment. Then I asked my husband to
get her favourite doll to the hospital. We
just thought of putting Pari in the same
position as Zikra - and it worked''.
News agency ANI quoted Ajay Gupta,
professor of orthopaedic at the hospital
as saying, ''An 11-month-old girl
suffering from a fracture was refusing
treatment so her mother gave us the
idea to pretend to treat her doll first
as the child is very close to the doll. It
worked well & patient felt comforted''.
Zikra is now known as gudiya wali
bachchi (the girl with the doll) across
social media.
Catholic school
bans Harry
Potter books
from school, says
they contain real
curses, spells
A Roman Catholic School in Tennessee, US, has banned the seven-volume
series of Harry Potter from the library shelf after a pastor claimed that
people risk 'conjuring evil spirits' when reading the books
A Roman Catholic School in Tennessee,
US, has banned the seven-volume
series of Harry Potter from the library
shelf after a pastor claimed that people
risk 'conjuring evil spirits' when
reading the books. Reverend Dan
Reehill, pastor of St Edward Catholic
School in Nashville, Tennessee said
he consulted an exorcist and at the
Vatican before banishing the fantasy
novel based on a wizard's life who
attends magical school, Hogwarts, and
his battle against Lord Voldemort.
Reverend Reehill added that the JK
Rowling authored Harry Potter is a
clever deception as the curses and
spells mentioned in the book are actual
which when read by humans risk
conjuring evil spirits into the reality.
Further, Rebecca Hammel, the
superintendent of schools for the
Catholic Diocese said she received an
email from Reehill about removing the
books following inquiry from parents.
Rebecca also told that the Catholic
church does not have any official
position on JK Rowling's books and
in this way school's pastor does
have final way.
However, Rebecca said even with
the books banished from the library,
parents should allow their children to
read Harry Potter series. She stated,
"The school would not stand in the way
of students reading Harry Potter at
their parents' discretion".
