maids' due to her
ethnicity
Jennifer Lopez is an icon, hands down.
But the singer, dancer and actress
remembers her early attempts at
movies and how the industry pushed
back because of her ethnicity.
"Maybe 30 years ago, it was very 'Oh,
you're the Latin girl. You'll do Spanish
roles; you'll play maids; you'll only be
limited to this little box,'" she told Variety.
The J-Lo we know and love wouldn't
let that kind of discrimination keep
her down.
"It's about getting people in the
business — the agents, the managers,
the Tommy Mottolas of the world — to
believe this girl can do more. But you
have to prove yourself too," she added.

festival celebrating
Colombia’s Pacific
music
Colombia’s third largest city, Cali,
kicked off its annual Petronio Alvarez
Festival, the largest celebration of the
country’s rich Pacific music culture.
This year’s edition is centered around
the role of women in the musical
culture of the predominantly black
inhabitants of the Pacific region who
share their unique culture with coastal
inhabitants of Colombia’s neighbor to
the south, Ecuador.
The festival that kicked off on
Thursday and lasts until Monday will
offer visitors daily concerts of artists
from the coastal provinces of Nariño,
Cauca, Valle del Cauca and Choco.
Additionally, visitors can take part
in workshops or attend debates about
the Afrocolombian music and dance
culture with the unique sound of
the region’s most important musical
instrument, the marimba.
The 2017 edition is the 21st of the
festival named after Buenaventura
musician Petronio Alvarez (1914 – 1966),
the unofficial King of Currulao.
Currulao is one of the folkloric Pacific
music styles declared an Intangible
Cultural Heritage of Humanity by
UNESCO in 2015.
The majority of events are organized
in the Alberto Galindo sports complex,
located in the southwest of Cali.

Lopez spoke to the magazine to
promote her new, empowering film,
"Hustlers." Almost three decades after
she got her start, the industry is now
heading in the right direction, she said.
In a first, book on
Indian classical music
in Chinese language
released in Beijing
In a first of its kind initiative, an
encyclopedia of Indian classical music
in Chinese language was unveiled.
The book titled “The Musical Culture
of India”, which traces back the origins
of various Indian music forms, was
authored by noted Chinese musician
and scholar Prof Chen Ziming.
The book was launched at the
Indian Embassy here by the Deputy
Ambassador of India, Dr Acquino
Vimal, and renowned Bharatnatyam
exponent Leela Samson. Launching
the book, Vimal said the growing
popularity of Indian music in China
shows that is a powerful means to bring
people of the two countries closer.
Praising Chen’s contribution towards
popularising Indian
music in China, he
said, “His book has
great significance.
It has systematic
exposition of
musical culture in
India.”
Chen, 86, is a
famous violinist
and is associated
with China Conservatory of Music,
a leading institution for the study of
traditional Chinese music and musical
instruments, had spent decades in India
studying Indian music.
“The book is a first monograph on
music in India written in Chinese
which can fill the void in the field,”
said Chen, who was closely associated
with sitar maestro Pandit Ravi
Shankar and Samson. The book has
13 chapters of content, including on
cultural background, origin, history,
types of Indian music, basic theory,
ragas, talas, musical instruments,
music genre and folk music.
A lover of India and its music, Chen
first visited India in 1989 as a foreign
scholar to study Indian music.

American singer Nick Jonas has
shared a mene in which Bollywood
actor Govinda is being compared to
him. Govinda’s pic is from an old
Bollywood movie while Nick’s pic is
from his recently released music video

In the picture that Nick shared on
his Instagram stories, both Govinda
and the American singer are wearing
yellow rimmed shades and shiny red
dress. While Nick has a plain and
simple shirt on, Govinda is wearing
one of trademark bright colour and
printed jacket.
This is not the first time that Nick
appreciated Govinda and his style.
It was only recently that Nick’s wife
and Bollywood actor Priyanka Chopra
made him dance to a 90s Bollywood hit
number featuring Govinda.
Mika Singh
apologies, FWICE
lifts ban on him
Days after he was banned by a film
workers’ body for performing in
Pakistan, playback singer Mika Singh
on Wednesday issued an apology.
Following his statement, the
Federation of Western India Cine
Employees (FWICE) revoked its ‘ban’.
The FWICE had ‘banned’ the singer as
he performed at a wedding in Karachi.
Its members will not take part in his
concerts and programs, it had said.
At a press conference here on
Wednesday, Mika claimed his
performance in the neighbouring
country at a time when tensions
between India and Pakistan were high
following the abrogation of Article 370
was merely a coincidence.
“It is a coincidence that I went there and
Article 370 happened. If I made a mistake,
then I apologise to the federation and the
entire nation,” Mika told reporters.
The FWICE said in a release that it
had lifted the ban on the singer.
As per reports, Mika performed in
Karachi on August 8. He later faced
flak on social media for performing in
Pakistan.
