Territory Laser Clinic’s team of fully qualified 

Dermal Therapists have a new and exclusive 

treatment for anyone looking to treat skin 

concerns including ageing and acne – LED 

light therapy using a medical device called 

Omnilux, the only one of its kind in the 

Northern Territory. 

Omnilux Combination Light Therapy – 

which uses various wavelengths of light – 

achieves an effective outcome and greater 

value in a shorter period. Most clients will 

have eight treatments over the course of 

four weeks, with visible results after the first 

treatment. 

As we age, the structure of our skin starts 

changing due to a combination of factors 

such as sun damage, poor nutrition, highstress 

levels, exposure to environmental 

pollution, smoking and alcohol. As a result, 

this can lead to dryness, wrinkles and 

changes in colour and texture. Omnilux 

light therapy targets specific cells to repair 

the skins supportive structures, reversing 

the effects of ageing by restoring collagen 

and elastin levels, leading to a younger and 

healthier appearance. 

Clinical studies have shown that over 80 

percent of subjects reported a softening 

of fine lines, and 75 percent reported 

improvement in skin softness and 

smoothness. 

Territory Laser Clinic specialises in 

the treatment of acne and now offer 

Combination Light Therapy to neutralise 

the Propionibacterium acnes bacteria 

responsible for inflammation, decrease 

pore size and stabilise oil production. After 

a series of treatments, 70 – 80 percent 

of acne lesions will clear. This treatment 

is suitable for anyone suffering mild to 

moderate inflammatory acne, including 

young adolescents and adults. 

Also available exclusively at Territory Laser 

Clinic is Allumera, a light-activated topical 

cream designed to use in conjunction with 

Omnilux to improve the overall appearance 

of the skin. Allumera offers proven results to 

fine lines, wrinkles, elasticity, skin tone, skin

These non-invasive therapies are relaxing

session takes approximately 20 minutes,

chlorinator for sanitation and a Dolphin M500 robotic 

cleaner keep the pool spotless. Five Spa Electrics LED 

pool lights, individually switched and controllable 

from the touch pad provide perfect ambience, with a 

Bombara fibreglass diving board for fun.

CrossFit methodology or other functional training systems.

Selling a frozen product in the 

Territory might seem easy but 

manufacturing and storing in the 

harsh weather conditions of the Top 

End is an ongoing challenge. There is 

considerable infrastructure behind the 

scenes that goes into making a single 

bag of ice. Strict criteria and testing 

procedures, alongside sophisticated 

automated handling processes which 

ensures ice is formed, bagged and 

sealed without any human contact 

for the highest quality product. With a 

manufacturing capacity of 70 tonnes 

per day, Penguin Ice also has a cold 

store capable of holding up to five 

days of production as a back-up to 

ensure the eski will never be empty.

“We service about 20 percent of clients

A ‘New Normal’ will shake the branches of

way. They will resist the idea that they need 

to provide well-executed tenders and be 

more accountable, and I don’t see this is 

as a bad thing. It’s how we can make sure 

we’re doing the best we can with what we

1. Make small changes - don’t attack 

everything in one go. Pick a small goal 

like drinking more water or eating more 

vegetables rather than a complex goal. 

2. Have a plan - work out what you need 

to do to achieve that goal 

3. Eat vegetables at every meal - most 

people don’t eat veges at breakfast. Add 

zucchini to your porridge. It increases 

fibre intake and keeps you fuller for 

longer 

4. Drink more water - keep a water bottle 

with you and consider swapping one of 

your normal daily beverages with water.

5. Hit 10k steps a day. Having exercise 

goals are fantastic. But most people 

would benefit greatly just by increasing 

their NEAT levels. Especially if you sit at a 

desk all day 

6. Don’t cut out food groups. Lots of diets 

and cookie cutter plans preach cutting 

carbs etc etc. That’s great for the short 

term, what happens after? What have you 

learned? 

7. Choose something sustainable for YOU. 

Everyone is different. For some people, 

paleo is the go or IIFYM. Find your niche, 

try different things but remember, if you 

can’t see yourself doing it in five months 

let alone five years. Don’t do it at all. 

8. Don’t call them cheat meals. People are 

so quick to demonize food. Food is food, 

it’s not cheating. So don’t treat it as such. 

9. Forgive yourself. You’re going to stuff 

up. You’re going to have a bad day and 

eat every thing in sight plus another 1000 

calories more. It’s ok. You don’t need to 

starve yourself tomorrow. You do need 

to recognize what that trigger was and 

move on. 

10. Remember it’s a marathon not a 

sprint. You’re in this journey for the long 

haul. This isn’t about transformation. This 

is about lifestyle. This is about long term 

health. Treat it as such.

HIM INTO THE SEAT. WITH NO VENTILATION, 

IT’S NEARLY 60 DEGREES IN THE CAR AND 

SWEAT BEGINS TO FORM ALONG HIS 

FOREHEAD. HE BREATHES DEEPLY, TRYING TO 

KEEP A STEADY HEART RATE, AND GRIPS THE 

WHEEL WITH GLOVED HANDS. THE LIGHTS 

GO OUT AND THE ENGINE ROARS. IT’S JUST 

ANOTHER DAY IN THE OFFICE FOR 21-YEAR- 

OLD DARWIN LOCAL AND MOTOR RACING 

DRIVER THOMAS MAXWELL. 

Not so long ago, Tom said his dream was racing European Formula 1 or nothing. Casey Stoner 

and Daniel Ricciardo’s success had already proven Aussies could succeed in Europe and this was 

encouraging. But aspirations can take a different turn very quickly in the motorsport industry. 

Tom’s love for motorsport really took off when he began racing go-karts at 10 years old. 

His competitive spirit was quickly drawn into the thrill of racing and it wasn’t long until he 

outgrew go-karts and found himself whipping around the track of the Australian Formula Ford 

competition. Tom’s rapid success caught the eye of an English racing team and at just 17 he made 

the leap half way around the world to compete in the British Formula 3 competition. From here, 

Tom advanced to race in the European Formula Renault Championship in pursuit of his ultimate 

victory – racing Formula 1. Relocating to the other side of the world to race just two divisions 

below Formula 1 on some of the world’s best tracks is a rev-head’s dream, and this fact isn’t lost 

on Tom. 

‘I think it was probably one of the most exciting things I’ve done in my life… to throw myself

straight in the deep end and see if I would float or sink or 

swim.’ 

Idling at the traffic lights I often try to imagine what a driver is 

feeling sitting at the grid before a big race. Tom laughs at my 

comparison and says after handling race cars it’s hard to get a 

kick out of driving the family Hilux to Woolies. 

‘When you put your foot down and nothing happens it’s quite 

disappointing so you don’t get that same thrill when you give 

it a rev.’ 

Rather, waiting on the grid to start his first international 

race was utterly nerve wracking. Staring down the track in a 

completely different car half way around the world from home 

understandably opened the door for doubt to creep in and 

ask; what if you’re just not good enough? Tom 

described these last few moments before the 

race like a test. The last opportunity to cram 

the game plan in whilst he still had the spare 

brain capacity. Going over where he wanted 

to make a move on the inside of a competitor 

and focussing on what he wanted to achieve 

helped dispel the nerves. 

‘Once the lights go and it all starts you don’t 

have time to be thinking about that, it’s all 

subconscious from then on.’ 

Although starting out amongst international 

competition was daunting, it wasn’t the 

biggest hurdle Tom felt he faced in the move. 

‘The driving level (overseas) itself wasn’t too 

bad to adjust to, it was more the living on the 

other side of the world away from family that 

was more tricky.’ 

Moving so far from family comforts in Darwin 

was a big learning curve, but like any 17-yearold, 

Tom had a survival meal up his sleeve. 

‘My speciality was a stir fry. A few vegies, 

noodles and stir fry sauce, just bang it all in a 

pan and you’re ready to go!’ 

The financial logistics of racing in Europe was 

another huge obstacle in Tom’s career. With 

so much money involved in motorsport it’s 

often assumed drivers are being paid well for 

the stickers on their car, but this is far from 

reality for up and coming drivers. 

‘Unfortunately, that’s the way motorsport 

is… it doesn’t really give a lot of people a fair 

opportunity to have a crack at it… it’s super 

expensive if you don’t have the right support,’ 

Tom explained. 

By super expensive, he means he wasn’t paid 

for any driving in Europe and had to source 

funds for all car maintenance, mechanics, 

engineers and damage. On top of this, 

finding sponsors in Europe to back a young 

Australian driver was no easy feat. 

‘A lot of the connections I had in Australia 

didn’t have much benefit being promoted on 

the other side of the world.’ 

After learning how cut throat and expensive 

the motorsport industry is for young drivers, I 

was curious to know whether he still felt the 

dream was Formula 1 or nothing. 

For the first time in the interview, I heard his 

heart sink a little as he chuckled, ‘That might 

be a little bit of an old dream. 

‘I would’ve loved to continue pursuing F1 but 

it wasn’t financially achievable to be able to 

go up to the next few levels. 

‘At the moment it’s solely about becoming a 

professionally paid racing driver. 

‘That’s why I’ve come back to race Porsche 

in Australia, to pursue this different style of 

racing referred to as GT or sport racing.’ 

Tom admitted putting the Formula 1 dream 

on the back burner was hard, but he’s not one 

to be defeated and dwell on disappointment. 

His determination to gain a foothold in the 

racing industry is tangible when he talks 

about his current opportunity in Australia’s 

Porsche Carrera Cup. His optimism rarely 

falters and he doesn’t view the transition to 

a Porsche double the weight of his previous 

open wheeled car as a setback, but rather 

another challenge to overcome. 

So, what’s next? 

Despite the extraordinary experiences Tom’s 

had he’s still an Australian racing die-hard 

at heart and is looking forward to the 

opportunity to race Bathurst. 

‘It’s something I’ve watched as a kid for a lot 

of years so to be able to have a go myself is 

going to be pretty special.’ 

Looking further down the track, Tom 

is aiming to return to Europe in the 

international Porsche championship. But for 

now, when he’s not preparing to face off on 

Aussie tracks, you’ll find Tom lapping up the 

NT lifestyle either reeling in barramundi or 

watching Essendon, with an occasional CC 

and Dry in hand. 

Deep down, the thought of motorsport not 

being a part of his life is so unimaginable Tom 

will throw everything he has at it and there’s 

a sense it won’t be long before Thomas 

Maxwell is a household name.

What is Strength Training? 

Strength training is a form of 

physical conditioning, otherwise 

known as resistance training. An 

example of this is lifting weights, 

which exercises the muscles by 

being worked against an opposing 

force. Using machines at your local 

gym, doing Olympic weightlifting 

and using free weights (such as 

dumbbells) are all examples of 

strength training, so chances are, 

you have done it before.

bone density, and strengthens 

tendons and ligaments. 

Developing strong bones 

reduces the risk of developing 

osteoporosis and decreases the 

risk of bone fractures (Health

After completing an accounting degree, The 

Adding Value CFO Principal, Michele Bain 

decided to study for the CPA qualification. Upon 

completion and finding little work opportunities 

in Darwin, Michele decided to create her

late nights of worrying about cash flow.” 

With 27 years of accounting experience working 

‘in’ the business for various business structures 

and industries, instead of purely public 

practice, Michele has a strong understanding 

of organisational needs. The Adding Value CFO 

also offers virtual support with bookkeeping, 

bookkeeping training and Virtual CFO support. 

“I decided to complete a ‘train the trainer’ course 

last year so I can train small business owners on 

their accounting software such as Quickbooks,

10 years, like Felix Baumgartner’s jump from 

outer space in 2012.

Cool Pty Ltd was launched with 3 employees 

and still today employs those 3 original 

Tradies. 

Long term staff is the key for any business, 

along with training staff, UB Cool have 

signed up over 18 Apprentices over the past 

10 years. 

Reflecting back, it’s been a very busy 10 

years for everyone in Darwin and the team 

at UB Cool have stood up to every challenge. 

The devastation of their Warehouse fire in 

2018 being their biggest challenge, but 

with strong devoted staff and community 

support they bounced back and are 

proud to be back in Winnellie with a new 

Warehouse / Showroom.

Panasonic, Fujitsu and Mitsubishi Electric 

with factory support in new products, tech 

support & training along with in house parts, 

supply and warranty services.

the big boys. This can be difficult on a 

dollar-for-dollar basis but our reputation 

works very well for us.” 

“We have a strong focus on spending local

economic times but we all need to think 

about tomorrow and get the Territory back 

on its feet with smart business and keeping

Lack of sleep and time management can 

be huge barriers not to mention feeling 

insecure with our post baby body and being 

away from baby. But there are plenty of 

benefits to getting back to the gym. Not 

only does exercise help us lose some of those 

pregnancy kilos, but more importantly it is 

great for our mental health. Spending time 

with other like minded adults can be really 

important when we spend all our time with 

a new baby. That one hour away to devote 

to ourselves and our physical and mental 

wellbeing is invaluable as a parent. There will 

always be plenty of excuses not to do it but 

it’s important to start. If you used to train 6 

days a week, start with 3 and build up from 

there. Remember that your body will need 

time to get back to where it was, start slowly, 

scale your workouts back, and just keep 

showing up, even if somedays you can’t give 

100%. It took your body 9 months to create 

another human, give it the same amount of 

time to return to it’s formal glory! 

Getting back to the gym or any exercise 

routine after having a baby can be difficult. 

Being tired and trying to find time in a busy 

schedule can be challenging. These days 

we are more aware that the mental health 

benefits of exercise are just as, if not more, 

important than the physical ones. Taking 

just one hour a day, a few times a week to 

exercise, will make us better parents, and with 

most gyms offering child minding there are 

no excuses. As soon as you get the all clear 

from your doctor to resume normal physical 

exercise get started! It might be just getting 

out for a 30min walk everyday for a week, and 

then back to the gym. I remember my first 

workout post baby. We did some running 

and I remember feeling things giggle from 

places that never giggled before. I was the 

last one to finish the workout and I was a 

little embarrassed. But as I lay on the floor 

recovering I never felt better. Start slow, scale 

your workouts back, and just keep showing 

up. It took your body 9 months to create 

another human, give it the same amount of 

time to return to it’s formal glory!

Legendary salvage engineer 

and deep-sea diver Carl 

Atkinson obtained a “lease 

in perpetuity” for the area in 

1945 and began, as a hobby, 

feeding the hundreds of fish 

visiting the shore at high 

tide in 1958. Carl successfully 

applied for the area to be 

declared a marine reserve in 

1964. He created what has 

become a unique institution 

in the Top End by singlehandedly 

constructing a rock 

groyne to protect the friendly 

wild fish. 

Owned and operated by 

Darwin’s fifth generation 

Fong family since 2003, 

the sanctuary has become 

a popular family-friendly 

tourist destination, achieved 

eco-tourism certification and 

welcomes over 60,000 annual 

visitors of all ages – both local 

and from around the world 

- who can experience handfeeding 

up to 20 different 

species of tropical wild fish. 

Visitors can hand feed from 

the stairs or the viewing arena 

or wade right into the action 

and feel the fish tickling their 

feet as they swarm in search 

of a gratuitous snack of bread 

Due to the enormous tidal 

movements of Darwin’s 

harbour, many hundreds 

of fish only visit Aquascene 

for a few hours a day and 

numbers may vary but you 

are guaranteed to always see 

fish! Numbers are generally 

highest between December 

and August on deeper tides. 

Visitors can expect to see 

milkfish, mullet, catfish, 

bream, Tiera batfish and the 

famous Territory barramundi 

and may also get a glimpse of 

rock cod, mangrove jack, rays, 

parrot fish, diamond fish and 

mud crabs. Have your camera

MUST-DO is the magic of moonlight cinema at 

the Darwin Waterfront. From the 20th of April 

to 20th of November, Deckchair Cinema, who 

happens to be operated by a non-profit Darwin 

Film society, opens its screens seven nights a week 

that promptly starts at 6:30pm as being advertised. 

It’s nice to be early at the venue to experience 

again the stunning sunset while it kisses the 

sea and enjoy the tropical garden setting with a

Mataranka is a small pastoral 

town in the top end region 

of Australia’s Northern 

Territory. Mataranka 

is famous for its sand 

bottomed warm springs 

with lush palms, crystal 

clear warm waters and is the 

location of the Australian 

classic novel We of the 

Never-Never. 

Mataranka is located on the Stuart Highway 1080 km 

North of Alice Springs, about 420 km southeast of the 

territorial capital, Darwin, and 107 km south-east of 

Katherine. In the language of the local Yangman, the 

word “Mataranka” means “home of the snake”. 

Mataranka is a place where you can swim in hot 

springs all the year round; these springs are around 

30°C and pump out 30.5 megalitres of water each day. 

This area used to be the home of Jeanie Gunn; who 

wrote the famous book about Elsey Stations titled “We 

of the Never Never’ which is now a part of Australia’s 

folklore. It is believed that once you visit Mataranka 

you’ll Never Never leave! 

Today, Mataranka is now a modern community of 

400 people and since it is one of the famous tourist 

spots it provides all the services a visitor expects. You 

can have the facilities like accommodation, , Inns, 

resorts, cafes, restaurants, and general stores. 

THINGS TO DO & SEE 

• The Stock Yard Gallery: The Stockyard Gallery - a 

cafe and gallery in the small town of Mataranka, 

beautifully showcases the local art and artifacts,

as well as books about the Northern Territory. 

Another attraction in the Yard gallery is the fourmeter 

statue of the postman Henry Peckham, who 

is one of the characters from the book, ”We of the

of a granite boulder set on a square plinth is a 

heritage location in Mataranka, which was made 

in the memory of fallen and returned servicemen 

and women of Mataranka within the roper river 

district who were involved in some past Australia’s

Show” in Mataranka to experience one of Australia’s 

best fish species, the Barramundi being Hand fed.

Driving an hour-and-a-half from 

Darwin displays countless of diverse 

environments that showcase its rugged 

sandstone cliffs, breath-taking streams 

and monsoon rainforest, magnetic 

termite hills, waterfalls and notable ruins. 

The 1,500 square-kilometre park is mostly 

vital to the Koongurrukin, Marranuggu 

and Aboriginal community. The Finniss 

exploration was the first ever connection 

of Europe to the area and the park that 

was named after the prestige Frederick 

Henry Litchfield, a member of the 

expedition. 

To have the best appreciation of it’s true 

full beauty, its best to stay for at least 

two days to plunge into its crystalclear 

swimming holes and pleasant 

bushwalking to relax you. Don’t worry 

about the refreshments, they are readily 

available in the park at Wangi Falls while

Let’s go up North! 80 kilometres from Darwin lie Bathurst and Melville Islands, 

known communally as the Tiwi Islands. During 1795, Europeans started their 

contacts with Tiwi people and 199 years after, the British established a 

settlement which was the first in North Australia. 

A guided tour in the island is best experience in life with the modern-day 

Aboriginal community to learn more about their history and culture. 

Tiwi people are known for their distinguishing fabric prints, impressive 

pottery, sculpture and carving designs. You may also do a quick detour to

Kakadu National Park is on for the Historical books. It’s 20,000-kilometre space 

of landscapes and habitats, salt water crocs prowl in freshwater billabongs with 

lotus lilies. Challenging cliffs of the Arnhem Landscape ridge the deep sandstone 

gorges and pockets of cloudburst rainforest. One of its highlights is the Jim Jim 

Falls which has been a hit through the galleries of the Aboriginal Rock art at Ubirr 

and Nourlangie Rock or explore the Yellow water and Mamukala. 

Aside from the Jim Jim Falls, there are also other sceneries out there like the Twin 

Falls, Maguk, Motor Car Falls and Gunlom. There are numerous walkways that are

Uluru, also known as Ayers Rock, is a massive 

sandstone formation in the South of Northern 

Territory. 

Uluru is a living ancient landscape rich in Australian 

indigenous culture and spirituality. There are a 

number of different ways to experience the majesty 

and beauty of this unique desert landscape. 

The nearest large town to Uluru is Alice Springs, 

which is 450km away. Uluru is a sacred place to 

indigenous Australians which have started forming 

around 540 million years ago. 

As per the historical records, the rock was created 

over some 600 million years ago, and the Aborigines 

have been in this area for the last 10,000 years. The 

massive rock originally sat at the bottom of a sea, 

but now it stands 340metres above ground. One of 

the most striking facts of Uluru is that some 2.5kms 

of its bulk are still underground.

have easy stayed longer. The staff are so relaxed and friendly, 

nothing is a bother. 

Crab Claw Island is the perfect place for family getaway… 

the beaches are pristine, white quartz sand – perfect for 

sandcastles, the harbour is calm and full of fish – making first 

time fishing experiences full of all the right kinds of memories, 

the swimming pools are fenced with child proof gates and 

both pools have safe access, the restaurant has a special kids 

menu with health options as well as the ‘traditional’ holiday 

fare, high-chairs and knives and forks just the right size for little 

hands. 

We have two accommodation options to suit families who 

need a bit more space. Our Family Cabins are set on the rear 

of the main walkway, approximately 15m from the beach. 

They are twice the size of our standard cabins and fitted with 

a double and four single beds, a dining table and chairs, large 

refrigerator, and en-suite bathroom facilities. Alternatively 

‘The house’ is at ground level with absolute beach frontage.

The MacDonnell Ranges is a long series of 

mountain ranges located in the Northern 

Territory of Australia which covers an area of 

approximately 3,929,400 hectares. The range 

is about 640 km long, consisting of a series of 

bare quartzite and sandstone parallel ridges 

running to the east and west of Alice Springs. 

One unique feature of the MacDonnell 

Ranges is the changing color of stones, 

as the direction of the sun changes. The 

MacDonnell’s Ranges are considered as the 

best-watered district in central Australia. 

These massive mountainous ranges were 

first explored in 1860 and were named after 

Sir Richard MacDonnell, governor of South 

Australia

The Famous Community; Gunbalanya 

On the western side of Arnhem Land is a large remote Aboriginal town, Gunbalanya 

also known as Oenpelli. Gunbalanya is situated about 60km North East of Jabiru, 

across the East Alligator River in Arnhem Land and has a population of around 1,200 

with Kunwinjku being the main language spoken there. 

The area around Gunbalanya is popularly known by the name of Stone Country. 

Gunbalanya was first settled by pioneer Paddy Cahill, who established a farm in the 

region in early 1900s. Nowadays, the town has an Arts Centre, Supermarket, service 

station and licensed community sports club.

INJALAK ART CENTRE 

Injalak Arts is a thriving art centre located in West Arnhem Land. The Arts Centre 

established in 1989, is an Aboriginal charitable organisation supporting the

is one of the richest rock art sites in the world. Injalak Hills has some of the most 

stunning Aboriginal cultural sites in Australia with ancient rock art paintings, ancient

A very captivating falls can be found 

in Jim Jim Area of Kakadu is one of the 

best-known attractions of the Australia’s 

Kakadu National Park. Currently, access 

to the area has tremendously improved. 

There are well maintained gravel road 

and even the two-wheel drive vehicles 

can get to Jim Jim camping area though 

not to the falls itself. 

At the top of the plunge pool is a 

sure win! Everyone has been enjoying 

taking a dip in a hot day. But it is highly 

recommended for you to take some 

more time to spare the falls to enjoy and 

explore going to the top of the falls. 

Are you a hiker? This is one that you 

can try, it is called the Barrk-Marlam 

Bushwalk. It is a six-kilometre return 

walk that takes you six hours return 

depending on your pace. First part of 

the walk is a bit challenging as this is 

a steep climb up to the side of the hill 

but most of it was an easy stroll thru the 

bushland along the top of the slope. 

This place is surely one good place for 

hiking, relaxing and camping all rolled 

into one. 

Falls 


George 

Twin Falls Gorge is one of Kakadu’s 

big waterfalls. It has a 150-metre 

high cliff into a deep pool. During 

the dry season, you can walk 

through to the base as it has a 

very slow flow of water. 

It has an aquatic life in the clear 

waters that deserves a special 

mention in this blog. As soon as 

you dock, a good walking exercise 

along the floating boardwalk 

showcase the best scenery that 

the falls could offer. 

At the base of the gorge, you can 

go on picnic and soak yourself in 

the best aura on the white beach. 

You may also explore more of Twin 

Falls Gorge during the dry season 

is by road, boat shuttle service and 

a walking over huge stones, sand 

and boardwalk.
