How RuPaul
Changed My Life
PHOTO BY : J.J.IMAGES COSTUME BY: ABRAHAM D. LEVYI
I
often get asked how I feel
about my time on “RuPaul’s
Drag Race.”
There is often an implied pity in this
question, as though I’m supposed to be
upset or should have regrets due to my
early departure from the show. This is
ironic because I am so happy with the
life I get to lead now; so many of the
opportunities in my life wouldn’t have
been possible without my stint on the
show.
It was my dream of many years to be
on my favorite TV show.
Putting on my face in the
workroom, strutting my fantasy on
the runway, spilling the tea during
Untucked; these experiences will
stay with me forever. I will always
be grateful for the support and
faith RuPaul and the entire “Drag
Race” team have had and continue
to have in me.
This experience extends beyond
just being on the show itself,
however; my life has forever
changed now that the season has
aired and continues to grow in
popularity.

In less than a year since
the show has aired, I
have been able to see
audiences dance to
music from my most
recent album (“Raw
and Unfiltered”) from
Honolulu to Helsinki.
I have always been New
York City based and have
been appreciated for my
talents here locally.
Being on the show,
however, has showcased
my drag persona to an
international audience,
one that has embraced
me vigorously. Now I get
to see new faces, explore
new cities and introduce
new people to my music,
my talents and my drag
in a different city every
week.
PHOTO J.J.IMAGES COSTUME BY: DANNY LOGAN DESIGNS

I walked into a theater in Seattle,
a city I had never been in, and was
greeted with cheers by a huge crowd
of people who had never seen me in
person before. To me that’s not only
awe-inspiring, and something I’d never
imagine could happen, but it’s fucking
cool.
“RuPaul’s Drag Race” has also given
me the opportunity to create art on a
level that’s never been possible. When
I have a crazy, kooky idea chilling with
my friends, there are people who
believe enough in me now to make it
a reality.
Recently, while wrapping an upcoming
secret project with an up-andcoming
brand that will shock the
drag community (think Choose Your
Own Adventure Porn Music Video)
for my song “Raw and Unfiltered”
(available on my album of the same
name on iTunes and all other streaming
services), I became overwhelmingly
aware of the platform I had been
gifted. I mean, I even got to be
featured on BET in a dress, and that
doesn’t happen to little black boys
from West Philadelphia, like myself.
My most monumental achievement has
been releasing music that highlights
the African American experience.
Shortly after filming Season 11, it
quickly became clear how different
success was going to look for me than
for my other castmates. A big part of
that had to do with the color of my
skin. Black drag queens, and queens of
color in general, are treated differently
than white drag queens. I have made
music, videos and events highlighting
this divide, and am already making a
difference in how people perceive it.
PHOTO BY : J.J.IMAGES CORSET BY: ABRAHAM D. LEVYI GLOVES BY: VIVA VIDALIA

After seeing Lady
Gaga’s “Joanne” tour,
I realized that music
could be a tool used for
healing and effecting
change.
I want to do my
part in healing my
community and the
world. I’ve been
through a lot, and
I’m so honored to
think that I get to
make a difference
for other people
like me.
PHOTO BY : J.J.IMAGES COSTUME BY: ABRAHAM D. LEVYI
I say that very specifically, because
there’s a trailblazer who made my path
easier—indirectly, sure, but also very
specifically. RuPaul broke the ground
that every drag queen twirls on. When
I was a kid, there were very few black
people on TV at all, and certainly no
other gay black men. RuPaul showed
me that my dreams were possible, and
worth fighting for. And when I got to
the important part of my career, when
I needed someone to notice me and
cause others to notice me, she picked
me out of thousands of other hopeful
drag queens to represent my city, my
people and most importantly, her.
I have not only been inspired by, but
personally elevated by my hero.
So, no, I have nothing to complain
about. There’s no dirt to share, no
tea to spill, no shade to throw. I am
infinitely grateful for my time on
“RuPaul’s Drag Race,” and so excited
that I get to share who I am and
what’s most important to me with the
world.

DENEY ADAM MAKES
THE MIC DROP WITH
“HEART DROP”
DOWNTOWN
ARTIST RELEASES
PULSATING NEW
SINGLE
At night, Deney Adam is one of the
funky, freshest dance acts in clubland.
During the daytime, however, his fulltime
gig is as a makeup artist in New
York City. Not just any makeup. You
won’t find him behind the counter at Macy’s. Deney’s celebrity
clientele includes Susanne Bartsch, Lady Gaga, Daya and Kiiara.
He works with top designers like François Nar and Tom Ford
and with photographers Steven Klein and Mario Testino. His
work has been featured in “Vogue,” “Interview” and the “New
York Times.”
“I never intended to be a makeup artist,” Deney admits. “It’s
something I fell into and happened to be good at. I love doing
makeup, but music has always been a big part of my life, and I
have never let go of my
passion to sing.”
This month, Deney is
out with his new single,
“Heart Drop.” Written
by Nisha Asnani and
produced by Mher Filian,
the dark, sinister jam
is the second release
from his upcoming
“Sandcastle” EP. We
spoke with Deney to
INTERVIEW
Can you believe summer is
over?
It went too fast, the shortest
summer ever.
How will you remember it?
The highlight of my summer
was having my boyfriend
finally back next to me
after he spent five months
overseas. It was the first time
I cried happy tears! Life is
good right now.
What was your summer
jam?
Banks and her new album,
“III.” “Gimme” and
“Godless” have been on
repeat for weeks now. I’m
obsessed.
We’re obsessed with your
new single, “Heart Drop.”
I was hanging with Nisha
[the songwriter], and we
were talking about the best
sexual experiences we have
ever had. Somehow it turned
into a writing session, and
30 minutes later, we had a
song! She is simply brilliant.
Were you going for a
particular sound?
Deney Adam: When it
comes to my music, I am
very indecisive. I’m always
changing my mind trying
to improve things, and it’s
never over.
How many versions of
“Heart Drop” did you
record?
Probably eight or nine. I
still have a feeling I could
have done it better.
The music video is getting
a lot of attention. Can we
discuss the box?
[laughs] That damn box! We
had to move mountains to
make it happen. You would
think one rental warehouse
in NYC would have a six-foot
glass box available. Well,
you would be wrong. We
had to make it from scratch!
It was definitely worth it.
You get all kinds of nekkid
in that box!
[laughs] I wanted to create
a catchy visual. Yes, I am
naked throughout most of
the video, but my goal was
to be more artistic rather
than just “another naked
guy.” I didn’t want it to be
merely sexual, and I think
Mike [Ruiz, the video’s
director] did an amazing job
in that sense.
What are you most looking
forward to this fall?
I am looking forward to
dropping the full EP and
sharing more of my ideas
and creativity with the world.
Live Review:
PAULA ABDUL
‘FOREVER YOUR GIRL’
With a cascade of dancers and a
kaleidoscope of sound and colorful
fury, Paula Abdul stormed the
stage of the Las Vegas Flamingo
Hotel in a flawless showcase of
song and dance. Her high-energy
performance ignited the room and
evoked a barrage of applause
and appreciation from the sold-out
audience. After one short week, her
show has sky-rocketed to one of the
top 20 Vegas shows, according to
“USA Today.”
For years, Abdul has enchanted
audiences all over the planet.
A woman of many talents, she
is a dancer, singer, actress,
choreographer and television
personality, having begun her
career as a cheerleader for the Los
Angeles Lakers at age 18. After
being discovered by The Jacksons
and choreographing music videos
for Janet Jackson, she recorded her
debut studio album, “Forever Your
Girl,” which became one of the most
successful debut albums at that time
with four consecutive #1 hits and
selling 16 million copies in the U.S.
Abdul later became one of the first
judges on the series “American Idol”
and “So You Think You Can Dance,”
amongst others, and ultimately
earned a star in Hollywood’s Walk of
Fame.
Entertaining the audience was
her stage sidekick and DJ ( Percy
Rustomji) as Skat Kat, who also
appeared throughout the show,
lending comedy and laughter
throughout. The top-notch production
included insight into her childhood,
her beginning as a Lakers Girl and
then segued into her experiences
choreographing artists like George
Michael, Janet Jackson and many
movies filmed in the U.S.
Her songs also sparked memories,
especially “Straight Up,” “Forever
Your Girl,” “Blowing Kisses in the
Wind,” and “Rush, Rush.”
One of the highlights for me was her
love for her fans, as displayed when
she plummeted into the audience,
kissing, hugging and thanking
everyone for coming out. It was a
touching and exciting few moments.
Her genuine affection is authentic
and sensitively orchestrated.
An electric bubble of energy, the
dancers warm up and stretch on
the stage then once the lights go
down they showcase their talents,
afterwards Paula then joins them
on stage as they delivered some
choreographed masterpieces
unparalleled to anything I’ve ever
experienced.
Like a display of fireworks, she
plunged into the sky and shattered
the darkness, and while the sparkles
don’t last forever, the memories of
them do.
Everyone has the fire, but the
champions know when to ignite the
spark, and sparkle she did. Each
note she sang was a fascination,
and each dance step she took
was illuminated. Her show was the
closest thing to magic. Abdul says for
her October residencies she plans
a few changes, but I say: “Don’t
change a thing, it’s perfection!”

TALKS
ABOUT: CUT VS.
In the U.S., over
80% of all males are
circumcised, but
that’s not universal. In
Japan nearly everyone
is uncircumcised,
and under 4% are
circumcised in the
U.K. In the U.S. there
can be a lot of stigma
around being uncut, to
the degree that some
adults even consider
undergoing surgery
to have their foreskin
reduced.
I was born in the
U.S., but I’m not
circumcised, and I’m
considering getting
cut. No one has ever
complained about my
foreskin, but I’m very
aware that most of the
guys I’ve been with
are cut. Sometimes
guys make comments
about me being uncut,
but only occasionally
is something negative.
I sort of feel like an
“other” because I’m
not cut, so I talked
to my doc, and I’m
thinking about it. How
can I make sure it’s
something I want to
do? -Male, Gay, 29
I have no issue with
people having this
done, IF it’s what THEY
want. But, it sounds as
though maybe you’re
really just giving into
peer pressure? I didn’t
actually ready anything
about how YOU feel
about YOUR dick. Aside
from how it looks, what
are the other reasons?
Are you able to maintain
hygiene? Is it too tight
and therefore painful?
How do you feel about
the loss of sensitivity
following the surgery?
I think these are more
important questions
versus fitting in.
My boyfriend has a
smelly D, and IDK how
to talk to him about it.
I’ve been with plenty
of uncut guys before,
and this hasn’t been a
problem. He likes to
hook up after the gym.
I get it: Working out
makes me horny too,
but he’s sweaty, and,
like, it’s not good. I
don’t want to hurt his
feelings. I know he’s
sensitive about being
uncut, but I gotta say
something. I thought
about breaking up with
him just to avoid the
conversation. -Male,
Gay, 23
UNCUT
The issue here is
hygiene and not just
that’s he’s uncut. I’m
curious if he is aware
that he is lacking in the
hygiene department?
Some guys are into the
sweaty smell and taste.
It’s possible people in
the past have enjoyed
it, and he thinks you do
too. I would approach
this conversation the
same way as any other
conversation about
a desired behavioral
change in your romantic
partner. First, reassuring
him that you really care
about him and want the
relationship to work;
second, that you care
about openness and
honesty; and third,
that there is something
you want you guys to
work on to improve the
relationship. Let him
know how much you
enjoy having sex with
him, but that sometimes
it’s difficult for you to
totally enjoy yourself
due to his hygiene. Then
discuss a way you guys
can both be satisfied,
which might include
something like a quick
shower after the gym.
This does not need
to be a reason to end
your relationship at this
point.
BY IAN-MICHAEL BERGERON
@ianmichaelinwonderland
One hot summer morning, on the
request of my friend Janis, several
friends and I went to the Camp exhibit at
The Met.
Camp?
(Or was I simply trying to justify the
weekly #HumpDay posts of my past?)
In seven years in New York, I’d not been
to The Met (barbaric, I know), and I was
excited to finally have the motivation to
go. Janis has been caught in our endless
weekend game nights for years, which
isn’t his first idea for a good time, so it
was fun letting him take the lead.
Walking into a hot pink hallway, I was
struck by the first statue, a bronze man
about a foot tall from The J. Paul Getty
Museum in Los Angeles.
The statue,
attributed to
Petro Tacca,
was sassier
than me on
a rough day,
one hand on
his hip, a sheet
draped around
the other. The
statue bares
full frontal, the
smirk on his face
saying, “I know I
could easily cover
up with this sheet,
but what would be
the fun in that?”
From the back (and
I wasn’t the only one
looking) he showed
off his rotund,
perfectly round ass,
left foot cocked to
better showcase his assets. I
felt like I had seen it before, and realized
he was a dead ringer for Michael Walker,
an Instagrammer marked as a “business”
with 202K followers. His Instagram
is filled mostly (but not entirely) with
photos of him showing off his ass, just
as Bronze Man did, with a prideful
stance and the slightest of smirks. I
wondered, is Walker’s Instagram much
more than another thirst trap? Are these
selfies, perfectly composed and possibly
Photoshopped, in some way contributing
to art? In some way contributing to
Camp is, if you’ve tried to Google
exactly what it means, hard to describe.
I feel that Susan Sontag did it best in
her essay “Notes on ‘Camp,’” published
in 1964, the essay which provided the
framework for the exhibition: “Many
things in the world have not been
named; and many things, even if they
have been named, have never been
described. One of these
is the sensibility—
unmistakably modern, a
variant of sophistication
but hardly identical
with it—that goes
by the cult name
of ‘Camp.’” (If you
find yourself lost on
Google, just look up
the entire essay—it’s
a fantastic read.)
Camp
She quotes Oscar
Wilde, a King
of Camp: “One
should either be
a work of art, or
wear a work of
art.” I was glad I
wore my Storm
Ritter crop
top and mint
satin Prada
backpack.
My favorite quote in the
exhibition was from Mae West, 1971:
“Camp is the kinda comedy where they
imitate me.”
This quote was in my favorite room,
the biggest of the exhibition, which
showcased the most beautiful Camp
fashion. (My favorites include a full 3D
merry-go-round dress by Manish Arora
and a gold, silver and bronze tinsel dress
by Maison Margiela.)
I’d suggest anyone make their way to
The Met, if for nothing else than to
decide what Camp means to them.
