Being involved in ministry all summer, I learned so much about 

kindness. I learned that it manifests itself in different ways among 

different people. For me, I love writing people notes and lending them 

a listening ear over a lemon poppyseed muffin. Others may give gifts, 

hugs, or buy people a macchiato. Sometimes it looks like giving up a 

nap in order to comfort a friend, sending a text as someone's parent is 

going into surgery, or asking for prayer requests in Sunday School. 

Kindness—love—changes everything. I mean, think about it. Because 

of God's love, we have a future in a beautiful eternity in perfect bodies. 

That love manifests itself in our lives and we are in turn supposed to 

love others. Our love grows in their hearts and turns into faith in God. 

Because of love, we are free. Because of love, in the midst of pain we 

are more than conquerors. Because of love, we have an unchangeable 

identity that no amount of uncertainty or poverty can shake. 

1 Corinthians says that anything done without love is useless. You could 

hold a door open for someone or leave a five dollar bill in the vending 

machine, but if you're doing it half-heartedly or just for attention, God 

says it's about as useless as a cymbal solo. 

This magazine was put together with love. Love is so very important 

to me because it radically altered my existence. It also birthed the idea 

behind this magazine: that you are beloved. So, I hope every article, 

every header, every photo reminds you of God's kindness in giving us 

the talents, resources, and time to weave this brand together.

To be honest with wasn’t you, aware I wasn’t what aware altruism what

That is a pretty powerful statement. 

But what does this word, altruism, 

really look like in action and not just 

in definition? Let’s take a look at a few 

examples.

On April 20, 1999, two boys 

entered Columbine High 

School and began a shooting 

rampage on the students and 

teachers there. Amy Over, a 

student and survivor, spoke 

out about that experience on 

the twenty-year anniversary 

of Columbine. She had 

just received a basketball 

scholarship that day from

when the shooting began. 

Coach Sanders came into 

the cafeteria, sounded the 

fire alarm, and warned the 

students to run because the 

shooters were coming. He, 

along with two other school 

faculty, ended up saving more 

than one hundred students

the students who were upstairs

never thought that he would die 

that day. 

into classrooms, he was shot 

several times, and later on 

that day he passed away. He 

is remembered as a hero, a 

friend, and an inspiration to 

many. Those whose lives were 

saved because of his altruistic 

and heroic acts are forever 

grateful. 

But we see from his actions 

that he was willing. He 

never thought twice about 

protecting the students from 

danger, even at the cost of his 

own life. This is one of the 

truest forms of altruism that 

I have ever seen. He selflessly 

sacrificed his own well-being 

for the good of others.

Of course, altruism isn’t just seen in extreme 

cases like this one. It can also be seen in 

the small, unnoticed ways, such as helping 

someone else with homework or a project at 

the expense of your time and energy. 

Even though these two examples are 

completely different, one attribute is 

consistent:

strive to exemplify. Think of ways you can be 

altruistic in your everyday life. You may be 

surprised at the opportunities God will give 

you! But of course, do it all in His strength

We all want appreciation. 

We all want someone 

to notice when we do 

something right. 

I would be lying if I said I didn’t seek 

praise after doing something small 

like cleaning my room or getting a 

good grade school. We’re human. It's 

normal for us to seek validation. The 

problem is that we can fall into the 

trap of doing nice things just to get 

noticed for it. Getting appreciation 

should be an added bonus for doing 

good things, not the driving factor.

I think Christians especially struggle 

with pride. It’s very easy to want to 

prove to everyone that you’re being 

the perfect child. Parents want to 

prove that they have the perfect and 

most polite family. We all want to 

take pride in what we do, to the 

point where we almost put up a fake 

front so people admire us. 

So what can we do to fight pride?

Isaiah 23:9 says, “The LORD 

Almighty planned it, to bring 

down her pride in all her splendor 

and to humble all who are 

renowned on the earth.” 

We need to understand that no 

matter what, God will humble us 

. . . whether we want it or not. He 

will knock us off the pedestal. So 

it’s important to check our pride 

before God checks it for us. 

James 4:10 says, “Humble 

yourselves before the Lord and he 

will lift you up.” Admitting when 

you do something wrong, and 

realizing when we do something 

just to get recognized is really 

important. We need to go to 

God with all of our problems and 

sins. You can show everyone that 

“perfect child” but God knows 

that person doesn’t exist. God is the 

one person you can be completely raw 

and honest with and He will still love 

you. 

Phillipians 2:3 says, “Do nothing out 

of selfish ambition or vain conceit. 

Rather, in humility value others above 

yourselves.” We can’t do something for 

our own gain under the pretenses of 

doing it for others. If you do this, you 

will gain nothing and feel empty. 

If you feel yourself struggling with 

pride, go to God on your knees and 

ask Him to humble you. Ask Him to 

help you realize that your life mission 

is to serve, not so you get praise or 

look perfect. You are just doing it to 

help someone. The key to any battle is 

going to God and ask Him to fight for 

you, and He always will. obo

We all need a healthy dose of encouragement each and every 

day. Whether you realize it or not, that dose may be the fuel 

that keeps getting you out of bed to push through the mountain 

of schoolwork, give your best at the job, and continue in the 

everyday journey to shine the light of Christ. 

How can we be 

ENCOURAGEMENT 

to others? 

LISTEN 

One of the best ways to show love 

and encouragement toward those 

around you is to simply listen. Giving 

someone your full attention shows 

that you value them and are willing 

to hear openly what they have to say. 

This could be a rant, a burden, or even 

a shoulder to cry on. 

TIP: When listening to someone, 

regardless of the topic, be FULLY 

PRESENT. 

What does that mean? To be “fully 

present” in a situation or conversation 

is to give your full attention to that 

which is before you. 

This means in a group setting, 

you are enjoying the fellowship and 

conversations (even if you didn’t really 

want to be there in the first place), 

and not fiddling with your phone 

and the never-ending abyss that is 

social media. When people look 

at you, they don’t see a slouched, 

half-listening figure scrolling on their 

phone, but a pleasant, engaged friend. 

Be intentional in your listening. 

COST: Self-sacrifice. “Do not listen 

with the intent to reply. But with the 

intent to understand.” (unknown)


BE INTENTIONAL 

Anyone can say, “I’m praying for you.” 

And how encouraging that can be! 

But is it so overused that you doubt the 

encourager at times? 

Don’t let that be said of you! Take the 

time to follow through. It could be a 

brief prayer in your heart or one said 

in the presence of that friend. 

But don’t stop there. If you make 

prayer a habit, you’ll be surprised by 

how God will remind you to pray 

for someone by bringing that person 

to mind. It’s in those moments 

you can send a text or write a note. 

Who knows? Your kind words of 

encouragement may be just what they 

need in that particular moment. 

TIP: Be the friend that your friends 

will never doubt. Follow through on 

your promises! 

Intentionality doesn’t refer solely to 

prayer either. Ask questions about a 

friend’s day, their plans for the season, 

and maybe brainstorm excuses to 

find new coffee shops. Be intentional 

and jot down a date for shopping or a 

trip to the lake for a fun, relaxing day 

away from the monotony of life. Don’t 

think “I should text them and see how 

they’re doing . . .” and never do it. 

Make a point—make a habit, and do 

it in that moment. 

COST: Diligence. “Friendship isn’t 

about who you’ve known the longest. 

It’s about who walked into your life 

and said, ‘I’m here for you,’ and 

proved it.” (unknown)

TAKE TIME 

This could be the costliest of anything 

you hear in regards to life. The 

overused excuses, “I just didn’t have 

the time,” “If only I had the time,” 

and, “There’s not enough time in 

the day,” are all too often ridiculous. 

Time is a gift. And, unfortunately, 

something that is spent on things of 

little to NO value whatsoever. 

We all have things we need and want 

to do throughout the week. And we 

can all admit not much of either gets 

completed, am I right? 

You may not be one for schedules or 

routines, but if used as a gift instead 

of a chore, they can make life so 

much easier. Instead of attempting to 

squeeze every possible responsibility 

and desire into the 24-hour day, divvy 

up those things and mix them into your 

week. 

For example, the weekdays may 

consist of housework on Monday 

+ a couple hours of one hobby, 

laundry on Tuesday + a couple hours 

of another hobby, Etsy preparations 

on Wednesday + an hour or two 

for photo shoots, and so on, with 

schoolwork wherever necessary. It 

takes more time to accomplish those 

things on your list, but they will get 

checked off and you are left with a 

sense of success. 

TIP: Make time—set aside a day or 

three each month that you’ll leave 

available for friends or family outings. 

Those could be the days you get 

together for that shopping trip and 

coffeehouse run, or a fun movie night. 

COST: Your time. “A treasured

There have been many people 

who I have been incredibly 

blessed to be loved by and 

whom I love deeply. 

When I chose to write an article on 

one person who has been an example 

of selfless love in my life, my mind 

began flying through everyone who 

has impacted me. 

How could I choose just one human? 

There have been many beautiful souls 

who have been there for me; who have 

touched me; and who have let me 

know that I am never alone. 

Selfless love is

article. 

I didn’t want to write a cliché, 

sappy article. I like to be utterly 

unpredictable and surprise people 

in my answers. I’ve always been the 

person who hated being obvious, 

and I always strive to be unique as 

possible in every situation. 

However here I am, in the end, going 

to do it anyway. 

Because why not? 

Cliché is underestimated anyway. 

Cliché can be legit good. And even 

though this answer is cliché, it’s true as 

anything. 

When I googled the definition of 

selfless love to see others’ opinions, I 

instantly thought of my mom. 

Hands down, without a doubt, no 

matter what, always in the end, my 

mom defines selfless love. 

She has 

• raised six kids 

• homeschooled each and every 

one of us 

• gone through depression and 

doubts 

• been a supporting pastor’s wife 

for fourteen years 

• and basically put up with me 

for twenty some years (I think 

the latter was probably the 

hardest . . . just sayin’) 

I would literally have to write a book 

to talk about how much my mom has 

done. Writing a short article just won’t 

cut it. 

She supports me, encourages me, and 

has listened to my countless nuclear 

meltdowns. She didn’t call me crazy 

like pretty much rest of the world 

when I said I wanted to drop out of 

college and try being a writer for the

Selfless love is hard to come by. Loving broken humans is scary and 

you are guaranteed to get hurt. 

Because honestly, loving no matter the cost or what you gain or if 

you’ll be loved back, hurts. But loving despite the outcome is not be 

be underestimated. 

It’s powerful. 

It gives an impact unlike the superficial, I’ll-love-you-if-get-what-Iwant-love. 

It’s a love that knows no bounds or feelings. It’s a love 

that knows action more than impulse. 

Selfless love is rare. 

But it will literally tear through the impossible. It will break down 

walls and reach you when nothing else can. 

Ultimate Love conquered death. 

Ultimate Love conquered hell so I can say there is hope for 

tomorrow. 

And my mom continues to give me a glimpse of that Jesus love

Jesus 

invites 

us to serve 

Fifteen years. 

That’s how long I’ve had the privilege 

of being involved in ministry. 

It feels like I’m dating myself by 

saying that, but with my twenty-third 

birthday just past, I don’t think I 

qualify for senior discounts yet. No, I 

was simply raised in a family that truly 

prioritizes being involved in Kingdom 

work, in any capacity needed. 

Even further back than fifteen years 

ago, I recall helping my parents make 

goodie bags for Sunday school, clean 

out church supply closets, dust pews 

and deliver meals to those in need. 

We were frequently early to church 

and late to leave. 

My brother and I were taught that to 

truly be the church is to be involved; 

after all, Jesus invites us not to be 

served, but to serve. 

“And He sat down, called the twelve, 

and said to them, ‘If anyone desires 

to be first,he shall be last of all and 

servant of all’” (Mark 9:35, NKJV). 

When I was eight years old, my family 

began a fellowship group that grew 

into a church by the following year. 

Since then, ministry has become even 

more integral to my daily life. 

I will admit, there have been times

when I don’t want to be involved. 

I’m not always eager to show up and serve, 

whether it’s in the capacity of music, 

teaching, holding the door, or simply 

listening to someone’s story. There are days 

when I don’t want to spend my time or 

energy investing in someone else. 

There are Sunday mornings when I want 

to sleep in; Bible studies I am hesitant to 

teach; people I struggle to embrace. 

It can be easy to resist involvement; to try to 

step back and let others step up. But I have 

learned that getting involved is the greatest 

way to be the hands of Jesus. 

By following His call to serve, and His 

command “to be doers of the word, and 

not hearers only,” (James 1:22, NKJV), we 

are given the opportunity to participate in 

His work and witness His plan unfolding 

up-close.

By getting involved, I have 

experienced an overwhelming sense 

of joy and purpose that comes from 

pursuing Christ and His mission. 

I have been humbled to serve the 

weary, stand alongside the broken, 

and comfort the wounded. I have 

prayed with individuals to receive the 

Holy Spirit, be healed, or be uplifted, 

and watched Jesus answer those 

prayers. 

Being involved has shown me there is 

a purpose that is boundlessly beyond 

me. God’s kingdom is immeasurable, 

and I stand amazed that He has a 

place for each of us to get involved. 

I encourage you to look for 

opportunities to get involved and 

shine the light Jesus has placed inside 

you. 

Get involved on your 

campus, 

in your community, 

in your church. 

Volunteer to tutor an 

underprivileged student, 

to run an errand for a 

single mom, 

to send cards to shut-ins. 

Dig into the talents God 

uniquely gifted you with 

and 

invest them into 

involvement.

Yes, there are days you will feel drained or will 

question if your involvement matters. On those 

days, be reminded that you are doing good work, 

and we are encouraged to “not grow weary 

while doing good,”(Galatians 6:9, NKJV).Your 

involvement matters. There are areas that are 

waiting specifically for you to step up. 

Choose to get involved. 

After all, you never know what amazing things 

God has in store for your involvement. obo

it—it’s not only loving our enemies 

that’s difficult. 

It’s doing that

for your family every day even when they 

forget to thank you; it’s doing something 

nice and 

thoughtful and 

for a friend when you’re tired and drained 

and not inspired; it’s greeting that 

coworker who never greets you first and 

would rather look at their phone. 

However, LOVE is more than a feeling, 

as I’m being reminded all the time. That 

means that it is possible and necessary to 

practice it even when we don’t feel it. It’s an 

action and a chosen attitude and it’s never 

more important to work at it when you’re 

not feeling it. 

For each and every person who calls 

themselves a Christian, loving others is our 

calling. As Jesus said it’s the second greatest 

commandment. The greatest is love the 

Lord and since loving God is obeying Him, 

loving others comes right behind.

A favorite quote of mine is from 

Mother Teresa who said,

It sounds so simple, but it really 

isn’t! 

So here are some 

little things we can 

start doing: 

Give to people without expecting 

anything in return 

Greet people who don’t greet 

you 

Hold doors open for others 

Do the dishes, vacuum the 

house, fold the clothes even 

before you’re asked 

Give your parents a holiday 

from a chore they do everyday 

Do something that your siblings 

should have done (like cleaning 

up their space) even though 

it’s not fair to you 

When someone criticizes or corrects 

you, thank them for it 

Give a smile even when you’re 

not feeling it 

Tell someone how much they 

mean to you or how they make 

your day 

Spend money on someone 

Write someone who’s not expecting 

you to write them – a 

postcard, an email, a text

In the days of empires and 

kingdoms, what was one of 

the ways that the ruler would 

show his or her power? What was 

something that very clearly stated 

that the subjects were under a 

certain person's rule? 

Sometimes people disliked the 

ruler and would profane the 

statues and ruin the coins. This 

would lead to punishment. The 

king's likeness was not to be 

ruined, but respected. 

Likenesses. 

Emperors and kings would make 

sure that their likenesses were 

engraved on as many things as 

possible to show that this was a 

place ruled by them alone. 

Whether on coins or statues set up 

in the town squares, the likeness 

of the ruler was everywhere.

Similarly, our Creator made likenesses to show that this earth is His, owned 

by Him and controlled by Him. But unlike the rulers of old, the likenesses 

that He placed around the world—humankind—are so much more than just 

a similarity on the outside. God gave us souls that will never die. When He 

created Adam and Eve, He made them so that they could live with him forever.

When another ruler conquered the 

land, what was one of the first things 

he did? Destroy the former likenesses. 

The ruler would want to erase the 

image of the one who had ruled before 

he infiltrated the land. 

Satan is the "prince of the power of 

the air." He is the one who has a 

temporary rule on this earth. His goal? 

Destroy the image-bearers. 

He wants to attack and destroy the 

ones who are in the likeness of the 

King, the King who is so much more 

powerful than he is. One of the 

saddest things that happens in this 

fallen world is how much we help him 

accomplish his goal. Because we are not 

only image bearers on the outside, but 

on the inside as well, destroying the 

image is not only physical. Words that 

tear down, cruel glares and hateful 

thoughts all help attempt to destroy 

the image of our Creator pressed upon 

each of us. 

Sure, it's not always easy to restrain 

a hateful word. But when you think 

about it from an eternal perspective, it 

has so much more of an impact. 

Satan wants you to say those words. 

He wants you to tear others down, 

destroy their hope. It's accomplishing 

his purposes, and his plan. Not God's. 

We are all created in the image of the 

one who made more things then any 

living person could imagine. He made 

us each unique, and has a purpose for 

every one of us. Nothing, not even 

death, can stop that, because His mark 

is stamped upon us. obo

This summer I was 

able to counsel at 

a Christian camp. 

Amidst assisting barfing 

middle schoolers, nicknaming 

boys, and sharing for the 

umpteenth time why doing 

devotions is so important, one 

of my friends sent me a care 

package. 

I could've sobbed. 

In a way, it was so simple 

. . . but also not. It was 

obvious she had put a lot of 

time and effort into the box

and handlettered quotes. Her 

love for me was evidenced 

by the excessive amount of
