Orchard Primary School
headteacher says farewell after 13 years
Much-loved headteacher Mr. Rob
Cook will this year close the gates
on his final term at Orchard Primary
School in Kirkby-in-Ashfield.
After 13 years as headteacher at
the school, and a total of 32 years in
teaching, Mr. Cook hosted his last
Teddy Bear’s Picnic at the school
on Thursday 18th July. The fabulous
annual event saw families join
together on the school field to play
games and music, and raise money
for Orchard Primary with stalls and
raffles. Mr. Cook rode into the event
after completing Ben’s Big Bike Ride,
a 35-mile fundraising ride he set
up five years ago when his son was
diagnosed with cancer.
Money raised has previously gone to a
number of cancer charities in memory
of Ben and his brave battle. This year
however, Mr. Cook has chosen to
donate all funds raised to the children
of Orchard Primary School, for sports
and leisure equipment, as a thank you
for previous years.
The first new item for the playground
came from an idea of year one
Orchard pupil, Edie Lima Redfern, who
had heard of the ‘Buddy Bench’. Edie
describes it as, “A special place to go
and sit if you feel sad or lonely and
want someone to cheer you up”. Edie
got her friends involved in helping her
paint the bench and it was presented
to Mr. Cook at the picnic.
Onside - YMCA
OnSide is a community-centric
skills, competitions and training
opportunities for young people with
disabilities and their families.
During school term-time, our trained
staff delivers activities focusing on a
different sport each session, with an
emphasis on developing a range of
skills and rules whilst playing games
and enjoying fun competitions. At
all young people should have
regardless of their background.
That is why we work hard to ensure
that children enjoy spending time
Two well-known television faces
have announced their plans to take
part in adult swimming lessons and
finally find the fun in aquatic activity.
Athletics legend and sports pundit,
Colin Jackson, and BBC Breakfast
TV presenter, Naga Munchetty,
have announced they are learning
to swim with Everyone Active, at the
ages of 52 and 44 respectively.
According to research carried out by
Swim England, one in five adults in
Britain are unable to swim. Colin and
Naga are determined not to be part
of this statistic and recently began
swimming lessons with the national
leisure operator. Both will follow a
12-week Learn to Swim programme
to build their skills and confidence in
the water. They have set themselves
the goal of participating in a charity
swim next year, where they will have
to conquer at least 400 metres – 16
lengths of a standard 25-metre pool.
Both Colin and Naga have outlined
safety as one of their primary
reasons for wanting to improve
their aquatic skills, as well as
ensuring that they don’t miss out on
experiences and activities due to
their lack of ability in the water. They
will be joining the 140,000 children
and 4,000 adults who currently
learn to swim with Everyone Active
each week.
Bright futures for
theatre trained students
If you think being a parent in today’s
consider what it is like for children.
With increased pressure from school,
distractions with social media and the
normal teenage angst, it is no wonder
many young people are feeling lost.
Every year, Dragons’ Den backed
#BrightFuturesAtRazzamataz.
Principal of Razzamataz Claire
students who have gone on to make
performing arts their careers, but
equally, we have many that have
used the life skills they have learnt
at Razzamataz to find the confidence
to pursue a wide variety of jobs. Our
role is to empower young people to
Looking for a senior school? Some
tops tips to help you find the right one
If you have a child in year 5, or even
year 4, you are probably looking at
options for secondary school. And
whether you’re at the very beginning
of this journey, or looking for a place
for September 2020, here is some
useful advice from Worksop College.
Look at their social media and website
You can often determine lots about a
school’s focus and what they excel in
by taking a look at their social media
channels and website.
What else is on offer?
The academic provision is of course,
paramount, but what else is on
offer? Are there extra-curricular
opportunities and how often?
Research the sports provision and
quality, as what is on offer can vary
wildly. The same goes for additional
support if your child is someone who
learns differently to the mainstream.
Health & well-being
As pressures on young people
increase, the pastoral care that
schools offer is increasingly important.
When looking for a school, it’s worth
asking about their pastoral care and
how they ensure young people’s
mental health is looked after.
Transport
It may sound simple, but it’s
fundamental! Take a look at the
school’s transport system and how
long it will take your child to get to
school. If the school has its own buses,
are they run by an external provider
or owned and staffed by the school
with the appropriate safeguarding
measures in place?
Visit the school
Take a good look at the welcome.
How were you welcomed when you
arrived? The strength of welcome
often tells you a lot about the culture
of the school and whether parents are
actively encouraged to be involved, or
not. Worksop College co-educational
day and boarding school for 11-18
year olds based in over 330 acres
of beautiful North Nottinghamshire
woodland. The school offers a
generous scholarships and bursaries
programme.
Participate in behaviour
and language research!
The Nottingham Biomedical Research
Centre are performing research
to examine whether the ability of
children to perform behavioural tasks,
such as memory tests, is related to
their understanding of speech and
learning of language. They also use
functional near-infrared spectroscopy
(fNIRS), a technique for measuring
brain activity, whilst children perform
these behavioural tasks. fNIRS is safe
for use in all children and doesn’t
harm a child’s head.
In a different part of this study they will
be performing the same behavioural
tasks and fNIRS measurements on
children with a severe-to-profound
deafness. This may enable them to
discover if and how the development
of the brain and its responses differ
between a child
with and without
a severe-toprofound
hearing
loss. Brain
responses and
performance
on behavioural
tasks may tell
us more about
a child’s ability
to understand
words and learn
language. They
may even allow us to predict at an
earlier stage, which children are at
risk of under-performing in terms of
speech and language skills. In the
future, this will hopefully allow us to
intervene, address and treat poor
speech and language development at
an earlier stage of a child’s life.
If your child is aged 6 – 48 months old,
with no hearing problems or concerns,
and has English as their first language
then they are eligible to take part. For
